Wheal Gawler was Australia's first metal mine. This leader was followed by an army of other metalliferous underground mines and surface operations in Australia. As a mine it was not highly significant economically because its small total production of nearly pure galena had low multiplier effects on the economy of South Aus- tralia. Its importance lay in its symbolism: here was a silver-lead mine close to the new town of Adelaide posing the question of what other min- erals lay in the Mount Lofty ranges and in the fields beyond.

Mineral resource classification is essential because it is required for public disclosure. The resources must be binned by a qualified person into measured, indicated and inferred categories using an appropriate methodology. The classification methodologies used have long been a topic of research and discussion. There are various traditional and geostatistical methods used in practice. Some are more popular than others. Because of the uniqueness of each ore deposit, it seems almost impossible to have a single industry-accepted norm for mineral resource classification. Therefore, some experts have adapted the methodologies tailored for the deposits they are working on, but many simply use the methods they and their clients understand and are comfortable with. In this paper, a new approach is presented to classify the mineral resources using a data geometry index. This index combines both traditional and geostatistical aspects of resource classification based on the data configuration around the block interpolated. It is a function of several variables such as kriging variance calculated for a block, distance from the block to the nearest sample and the average distance of all samples used to interpolate the block. Thus the approach using this index takes into account the spatial data configuration around the block being estimated, as well as the traditional distance criteria. The data geometry index and how it is calculated is explained. A case study for a gold deposit is presented to see how the classification based on this index compares to the existing methodology used in this deposit for mineral resource classification.

BHP BillitonÆs Cannington operation began production in 1997 and is presently the largest tonnage and lowest cost single mine producer of both lead and silver in the world. The original design capacity was 1.5 Mtpa and this has progressively increased via a series of debottlenecking projects in both the mining and milling operations. In 2003, 2.39 Mt of ore was mined, whilst 2.31 Mt of ore was milled. In February 2003 Cannington received approval to expand the project to a sustainable capacity of 2.4 Mtpa. This resulted in underground development into the northern zone, upgrades to the concentrator, increased accommodation at site and power station capacity. The Cannington project development team implemented a partnership approach to the project. Fraser Osborn Engineering and Outokumpu Technology worked closely together with the Cannington team to meet all of the project constraints.

Sustainable handling of municipal waste and sewage sludge has an important goal to recycle resources without supply of harmful substances to humans or the environment. The gasification mechanism of phosphorus from municipal waste and sewage sludge during the incineration process has been investigated to develop a phosphorus recovery system. Quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to an electric furnace is applied to study the vaporisation behaviour of phosphorous gas phases from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator ash of sludge during solid-state reduction by carbon. Measurements are carried out in vacuum conditions of 2 x 10-6 Torrs and furnace temperature range 573 - 1773 K, at a heating rate of 7.22 K/minute. It has been found that most of the phosphorus is vaporised as PO2, P2 and P4, in agreement with thermodynamic estimation despite a shift in the temperature regimes.

AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. Yandicoogina (Yandi) open pit mine is located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It hosts pisolitic iron-oxide mineralisation distributed within a meandering paleoriver channel. The deposit is characterised by clays occurring as lenses, accretions, desiccation joint infill and voids in the pisolite ore. The irregular shapes and highly erratic distribution of these clay pods represent a serious challenge for grade control at this mine.The current grade control approach used at the Yandi mine is based on sampling of production blastholes on a 6 m X 6 m spacing. Their good spatial coverage, tight spacing and low cost make blastholes a very convenient media for grade control and ore-waste definition. However the potential downside of this grade control approach is poor sample representivity. An alternative grade control approach is to drill and sample using reverse circulation (RC) holes distributed on a 25 m X 25 m grid. This approach has been tested in Yandi mine and compared with the blasthole sampling approach for sample representivity. The impact of increased drill spacing on mining block predictions has been studied using a conditional simulation technique. Blasthole and RC samples proved to be similarly biased, underestimating Al2O3 and SiO2 grades and overestimating Fe grades, when compared to full cone assays. These results show that using RC drilling for grade control at the Yandi open pit will not necessarily improve the representivity of the grade control samples. However, increasing the grade control spacing to 25 m X 25 m will lead to more than 12 per cent of the selective mining unit (SMU) sized blocks being misclassified. This is approximately a two-fold increase in the number of misclassified SMU blocks in comparison with 5 m X 5 m spacing.

Titanium dioxide (TiG ) is produced 2 commercially by two methods generally referred to as the "sulfate" route and the "chloride" route. The SCM Corporation, in supplying 15% of the world's demand for TiO 2, uses both of these processes. Of the two processes the sulfate route is generally regarded as the older and more established technology. Worldwide the sulfate route accounts for some 70% of total Ti02 production. However, in the U.S.A. the chloride process accounts for 80% of production. The processes vary in chemistry and raw material requirements. In the "sulfate" process finely ground ilmenite or titanium slag is digested with sulfuric acid to produce a porous "cake" vrnich is extracted with water and recovered liquor. The solution is treated with scrap iron to reduce any ferric ions to the ferrous state which is then crystallised and removed as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. The liquor is concentrated by evaporation and hydrolysed to form the insoluble hydroxide which is filtered and washed free of impurities. This is converted to the dioxide by calcination at 800 - 1000¦C and milled to break up any aggregates. The "chloride" process uses a higher quality feedstock of natural or synthetic rutile and/or high grade titania slag. The feedstock is mixed with ground high-purity coke and chlorinated at 950¦C in a fluidised bed. The resulting crude titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation and chemical treatment. The purified titanium tetrachloride is burned with oxygen or oxygen enriched air to give titanium dioxide and chlorine, which is recovered and recycled to chlorination. Titanium dioxide pigment from both processing routes undergoes similar finishing techniques. It is subjected to further stages of wet and dry milling, then coated with layers of inorganic oxides in order to enhance its properties for specialist applications.

The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. In the steelmaking process, mold fluxes are essential for ensuring thermal insulation, refining, and the efficiency of continuous casting. Real-time understanding of the in-service composition of slags and fluxes are crucial for optimising the steel production process and improving the quality of the final product. An in situ fibre-optic Raman probe that enables the study of the structure, composition, and viscosity of molten slags and fluxes at steelmaking temperatures has been developed and demonstrated both in the lab and in foundry scale experiments. The focus of this study is on the structural, compositional, and property analysis of molten fluxes in a laboratory setting, with the aim of applying this technology for in situ monitoring during industrial production. Raman spectra were successfully collected at various temperatures from 1000°C to 1400°C in real-time and analysed using a deconvolution algorithm to isolate and quantify peaks in the spectra associated with the specific structures of molecular components in molten and solidifying flux. The research successfully combines in situ Raman spectroscopy with high-temperature viscosity data, specifically targeting CaO-CaF-SiO2-Al2O3 based mould flux systems. Specified ratios of the deconvoluted Raman peaks, such as Al-O-Al/Si-O-Si ratio, shows good correlation with the flux chemistry, while the Q3/Q0 peak ratio shows good correlation with viscosity. A ruggedised Raman probe system was also developed and demonstrated in an 80 kg induction furnace. Ultimately, the goal of this work is to demonstrate in situ slag and mould flux analysis in industrial processes, such as in the continuous caster or electric arc furnace (EAF).

The use of concentrated solar flux for high temperature metallurgical applications is a wellresearched area with several reported literatures on solar calcination and metal oxide reduction. This paper presents two such processes with potential to reduce the carbon footprint from ironmaking through using concentrated solar flux. The first process involves solar flux incorporation to the recently developed lime-magnetite pellet (LMP) route of magnetite ore agglomeration. The second process is a hybrid solar-smelting route for iron ore-coal composite pellets that utilises solar flux to provide process heat. Both the concepts of solar agglomeration and solar smelting process were investigated using a solar simulator-hybrid reactor set-up at Swinburne University of Technology. Results from solar agglomeration experiments at 950°C suggested no change in the reaction mechanism of the LMPs under solar irradiation compared to electrical heating. The percentage and morphology of the primary phases (mainly CaFe3O5) appeared similar for both solar and electric heated LMPs. The solar-smelting of magnetite concentrate-lignite coal composite pellets at 1130°C showed a maximum metallisation of 55 per cent after 1.5 hrs of reaction. The solar-smelt process has about 25 to 35 per cent lower CO2 emission compared to the blast furnace ironmaking. Technoeconomic analysis of implementing a CST facility in an existing composite pellet process suggested a payback period of about ten years at a heliostat cost of $A100/m2 and natural gas cost of A$10/GJ. The economics of CST implementation can be further enhanced by decreasing the thermal losses from the heliostat field and reactor.

ERM Consultants Pty Ltd was established in 1980 for the purpose of introducing a disciplined coal technology and power station planning service, to support Australia's efforts in establishing a major export steaming coal industry. At that time, major coal exploration programs were mounted on more than 50 potential export coal deposits with proven open-cut reserves to export 200 Mt/a of coal. The fact that Australia achieved an export trade of only 30 Mt/a, equivalent to the energy requirements for a population of around 5 million people, illustrates the very small achievement to date. The main reasons for this small export steaming coal growth have been: 1. Failure to convince potential overseas coal buyers of the benefits of coal-fired power generation, and the ability of proper power station design to overcome environmental problems, and achieve reliable operation and long life when burning Australian coals. 2. Failure to promote Australian power engineers to advise on the use of Australian coals, resulting in Northern Hemisphere power station experience dominating in market countries. 3. Failure of governments to draw on privately practising Australian power engineers and coal technologists in technical workshops, presentations and assistance to overseas countries, to ensure that personnel whose business it was to serve the follow-on needs of countries were readily available. The result of these failures has been that: 1. Only a fraction of prospective overseas coal-fired power projects have proceeded. 2. Australia has had no influence in the design of overseas power stations to ensure that potential customers would be confident that Australian coals could be reliably burnt in their boilers.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the technical feasibility of application of the electric monorail as a haulage system in hard-rock underground mining in Australia, in comparison to conventional truck haulage systems. The elements of the system being investigated include mine design and layout, installation, loading and unloading subsystems, tramming speeds, cost and productivity, automation, ground support, safety and environmental factors. Electric monorail systems are potentially more cost-effective due to a range of factors: only the one system may be needed for the transportation of workers, material and rock; and excavations for monorail haulage can be smaller and mined at much steeper gradients than for truck haulage. The smaller excavation size also reduces the need for costly ground support and û in another important measure for the health and safety of mine workers, and for energy savings û it reduces ventilation requirements. Electric monorail haulage technology is being applied in hard rock mines in South Africa and considerable benefits have been realised by the industry in that country. In Australia, mine designs for metal mines generally remain based on truck haulage and/or shaft hoisting systems. There is a tendency to apply these haulage systems to every orebody. For the industry to achieve sustained growth against a backdrop of volatile diesel prices and environmental concerns, new generation underground haulage systems are required. The monorail haulage system offers opportunities in improving materials handling efficiencies in underground mining operations. This paper examines the application of monorail haulage in metalliferous underground mining, presents comparative data with track and trackless haulage systems and develops concepts for system application in combination with conveyor belt haulage and narrow vein mining situations.

The heterogeneous reactions of carbonaceous materials with oxidising gases are basic to all combustion phenomena and to many gasification processes. The carbon- carbon dioxide reaction at elevated temperatures (Reactivity) plays important roles in many metallurgical operations like iron blast furnace and ferro-alloys smeltings, zinc and lead smelting, alumina reduction, cupola operation and direct reduction processes. The stoichiometry but not the mechanism of the reaction between CO2 and carbon is represented by the equation (Boudouard reaction) CO2 + C 2CO (1) This reaction is more complex than that between carbon monoxide and metal oxides, which involves essentially a transfer of oxygen from the oxide to carbon monoxide to generate carbon dioxide without any change in gas volume, whereas the volume of the product gas of Equation (1) is twice that of the reactant gas. In the present paper an attempt has been made to review critically the reactivity measurements of various carbonaceous materials in carbon dioxide atmosphere. Steps in C-CO2 reactions, surface reaction mechanism, role of mass transfer on reaction kinetics, dynamic oxygen exchange reaction and rate equations and rate controlling steps are discussed. Various methods of reactivity measurements with their pros and cons are also presented. Effects of pertinent process variables on the reactivity of carbon are also described in detail.

In the Renison Bell area of western Tas mania, a series of Lower Cambrian quartzites, shales, carbonate beds ("dolomites"), cong- lomerates, tuffs and argillites have been folded into a broad monocline whose general strike is NW-SE, plunging slightly north and dipping NE. The downwarped eastern side of the monocline is disrupted by a steep (50-800) east dipping normal fault, known as the Bassett Structure, whose throw is in excess of 500 m. A series of flat north dipping normal faults, each with a throw of approximately 50 m, further disrupts the sequence. All major faulting was pre-mineralization. A cassiterite- bearing Devonian quartz porphyry body intrudes this Cambrian sequence 2 km south of the currently operating mine. Of economic importance is the presence of three carbonate beds in the sequence. These carbonates consist of a mixture of calcite, dolomite and siderite. The No. 1 (youngest) and No. 2 carbonate beds are each approximately 15 m thick and are separated by 20 m of hematitic conglomerates and tuffs. The No. 3 (oldest) carbonate bed is approximately 5 m thick and is separated from the No. 2 horizon by 50 m of dark grey, finely laminated shales and quart- zites. Whilst the carbonates are remarkably persistent over at least 30 km2, facies changes are common and as a result of these changes, the carbonates vary considerably in

æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. Excavation are in progress for the building of tunnels of the waterworks in West Campania (Naples). The works afferent to part II envisage tunnelling through a miocenic clay formation over consolidated by two tunnels whose sections are respectively 50 and 10m2. Tunnel blasting is carried out by mechanical means. An excavator is used in the big tunnel, whereas in the small tunnel a roadheader machine is used for a short tract and a mechanized shield is used over a long stretch. The tunnel feature complex problems regarding stability. This is particularly so for the big tunnel whose face appears unstable. For this reason the clay on the face is sistematically bolted by means of 3-metre and 12-metre bolts. This prevent the use of a TBM for tunnel Excavation.

South Africa is the world's largest producer of gold. The survival of its gold mining industry is dependent, to a large extent, on the successful implementation of new mining technology which reduces the operating costs. Gold mines of the country have a record of a high operational cost per tonne of rock excavated. The geology of the gold-bearing rock, in addition to the mining depth and the gold recoverable grade, profoundly affect the profitability of the industry. Among the other mining operations, drilling and blasting take a fair share of the mining cost. It is therefore proper to implement a dynamic approach of technological review aimed at combating the escalation of mining costs. Over the years, the industry has moved away from labour intensive activities. Mechanised operations are introduced where possible. Management techniques are oriented more towards better utilisation of human resources and machinery so as to enhance productivity in the stopes. This paper addresses the issue with particular reference to blasting operations in the stopes of deep gold mines. It reviews the conventional drilling and blasting techniques. It outlines some innovative changes brought about in the course of recent years with the aim of optimising productivity and the stope efficiency in particular. It focusses on the peculiarities of the blasting technology in deep mines. It discusses the issue of interaction between the high stress fields underground and the blasting generated stresses on rock fragmentation, as well as their impact on the remaining excavations. It anticipates the concept of the new technology of selective blasting in stoping. Finally it puts forward the crucial role played by management of the human factor underground.

This is a question that will be asked many times and by many individuals during the various evaluation stages of any new project. However, the question itself will often have different connotations to the different groups invariably involved in such an exercise. As examples, consider just three of the several different groups involved in the development of a new mining project - Financiers, Consulting Engineers and the Sponsors of the project (potential borrowers). To the Financiers, a 'bankable project' will be one against which they will be prepared to lend funds (but not necessarily all of the funds requested by the Sponsors). This usually means that in the first instance the technical information presented to the bank has satisfactorily covered all of the requisite areas to the levels of accuracy required. More importantly, the financial evaluation of the projected economic performance of the mine, as a whole, is considered sound and a set of arrangements under which the bank is prepared to advance loan funds have been structured which fully satisfy the bank's credit criteria. To Consulting Engineers preparing a feasibility study (or a part thereof), on behalf of the project Sponsors, the term 'bankable' invariably only refers to the technical completeness and the level of detail contained in the report which they are preparing. Their scope of work will not necessarily have been broad enough to fully satisfy a bank's requirements. It is unusual to see any specific references to overall project viability or profitability in Consulting Engineers' feasibility reports, other than those which are automatically associated with the use of the term 'ore'.

Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.
