Off-gas handling systems are a critical component of modern metallurgical furnaces and typically represent as much as 50 per cent of the total installed smelter capital cost. Inadequate off-gas system performance, due to insufficient exhaust flow or excess maintenance downtime, can present a serious process bottleneck and limit smelter production rate. Therefore, it is essential that the relevant performance issues are fully understood and considered in the design of these systems, particularly when combustibles produced within the furnace must be combusted or handled in the off-gas system. This paper examines the requirements, design issues, and conceptual design process for state-of-the-art postcombustion off-gas systems. The relevant design considerations of safety, environment, energy consumption, and maintenance are presented, and the relative importance of these key issues are compared and discussed. The benefits of using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling in the design process at the conceptual design stage are also demonstrated. Finally, the design basis and performance of a recent Hatch-engineered system currently in operation is evaluated.

Having worked as a consultant for most of his 40-year working life, mostly as a mineral property valuer, the author has seen many poor valuations. Most were valuations of exploration tenements where the selection of the rather subjective, but necessary, geological inputs raised the main concerns. Those valuations involving iron ore prospects raise particular problems due to the special characteristics of such deposits. Iron ore is more like an industrial mineral rather than precious or base metals and Reserves are determined not by a traditional cut-off grade but by customer specifications. This is intended to be an overview/keynote paper on the current state of the growing (yet consolidating) Australian Iron Ore industry. It has now moved beyond Western AustraliaÆs æPilbara Big TwoÆ of Rio/BHPB (with the emergence of the irrepressible FMG and Hancock Prospecting) to include the YilgarnÆs æMidwest ManyÆ (including US re-entrant Cleveland Cliffs through Portman) and projects in other States. Ore types have moved from haematite Brockman to martite-goethite Marra Mamba (including the RobeÆs mesas and below water table Yandicoogina CIDs) and magnetite ore types. There are DSOs and secondary process feed. Mineral valuers have to reflect today upon these and many other determinants of value when choosing the most appropriate methodologies to adopt when technically assessing and valuing exploration tenements containing iron ore. Set against a frame work of the JORC Code (2004) and VALMIN Code (2005), the general valuation issues involved in using the cost methods (eg multiple of exploration expenditure), market methods (eg comparable sales, rules-of-thumb and joint venture terms) and income methods (eg synthetic discounted cash flow (DCF)/net present value (NPV) modelling) are discussed. Relevant factors when valuing iron ore properties are discussed, eg ore type, lump/fines ratio, stripping ratio, water table, impurities and grade, particularly the JORC confidence category of the identified mineralisation. Remoteness and access to existing rail infrastructure is a key consideration.

THIS excellent volumetric method commends itself as a means of estimating the fineness of silver firstly, owing to the large number of possible impurities which do not affect its accuracy (these impurities include Cu-up to 70 % Au, Ph, Zn, Bi, Cd, Fe, Mn, Sb, and As); secondly, the method combines accuracy with speed. The above impurities are the only ones likely to be present in the B. H. A. S. Pty. Ltd. refined silver, and, with the exception of Cu and Au, the others, if present at all, would be well under 0.1 parts per 1000.Briefly stated, the method consists in the solution of the refined silver in HN03 , addition of ferric alum (indicator), and titration with an alkaline (either ammonium or potassium) thiocyanate solution until the brown ferric thiocyanate is formed, and gives a definite tint to the solution. The method is used at the Port Pirie smelters, and the outstanding feature in the method as there applied is the type of burette employed. This burette enables the operator to read 0.01 of a cc. with ease, whereas, with the ordinary burette fitted with a float, 0.05 of a cc., when a number of readings have to be taken, becomes very straining to the eyes. Moreover, waiting for the float to rise, and dislodging air bubbles from it, hinders rapid working.A description of the burette and fittings is appended with fig. 2. DETAILS OF THE METHODSolutions required are:a) Stock Solutions:(1) Ammonium thiocyanate, 40 grm. per litre of water; 30 litres are prepared and placed in a carboy with glass syphon attached.(2) Ferric alum, 250 grnl. per litre; two litres are prepared.

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath pre- dominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increas- ingly important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations commenced in the mid 1960's and it is now possible to predict subsidence in the Southern Coalfield with reasonable con- fidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of the subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover. The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidence of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

Jameson cell pilot plant trials were conducted in a number of areas in the Red Dome gold/copper flotation plant during 1991. The aim of testwork was to reduce the amount of cyanide soluble copper reporting in tailing to the gold leach plant, and hence reduce cyanide consumption. A number of these tests were conducted in parallel with conventional flotation columns. Laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the performance of the existing plant when compared with the addition of the Jameson cell allowing an extra sulphidising phase. This paper reviews the comparison of the Jameson cell and conventional columns in recovering cyanide soluble copper, while maximising copper concentrate grade. Key parameters that are investigated are residence times, air/pulp ratios, superficial gas recoveries and size by size recoveries. A brief comparison of performance of the Jameson cell and column in the controlled potential sulphidisation process is also presented. An estimation of the reduction in cyanide consumption is given.

Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.

The Miocene Chichibu granitoids associated with the Chichibu skarn deposit are divided into North Body, South Body and Daikoku altered stock. Orebodies of the Chichibu skarn deposit are mainly distributed in the north-western part of the North Body and Daikoku altered stock. The North Body consists of magnetite-series granitoids ranging from tonalite to granodiorite and to monzogranite from the margins to the centre of the intrusion. The South Body consists of tonalite and granodiorite, and most of these rocks are also classified as magnetite-series granitoids. The Daikoku altered stock consists of a quartz diorite porphyry. The SiO2 contents of the granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body range from 61.6 to 70.7 wt per cent. During magmatic differentiation, Cu, As and Zn contents in fresh granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body increase with SiO2 content up to 63 wt per cent SiO2, and then progressively decrease with increasing SiO2 contents as SiO2 exceeds 65 wt per cent. Estimated pressure for the emplacement of the granitoids is about 0.5 kbars. Cathodoluminescence studies on quartz from those granitic rocks show that vapour rich two-phase fluid inclusions tend to occur in the core of quartz crystals, while halite-bearing poly-phase fluid inclusions occur in the margins of quartz crystals. The distribution of fluid inclusions suggests that fluid composition changed from low to high salinities during the growth of magmatic quartz crystals. Texture showing quartz crystals with an oval shape enclosed by radial aggregates of a mixture of fine-grained quartz, plagioclase and K-feldspar composing the groundmass of the monzogranite also suggests a pressure decrease during solidification of North Body. These findings show that high salinity fluids were present during magmatic differentiation and that Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag skarn mineralisation of the Chichibu deposit was possibly associated with these high salinity fluids. The thermal conductivity of slag is critical for the efficiency of high temperature metallurgical processes such as the smelting reduction of ferroalloys, the ladle refining and the continuous casting mold flux in steelmaking. Experimental determination of slag’s thermal conductivity is fraught with challenges, as seen in yielding data for the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system that are often inconsistent and widely dispersed. In molten slags of this system, thermal transport occurs via phonons within the network structure. To quantitatively describe thermal conductivity based on the microstructure, hightemperature Raman spectroscopy was employed to measure the silicate tetrahedra Qi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3), with Q4 species inferred from mass balance. This study also integrated molecular dynamics simulations to provide a fundamental understanding of the microstructure units distributions. Machine learning algorithms, especially deep neural networks, were applied to establish the relationship between slag composition and the configuration of tetrahedra. The thermal conductivities were then connected with silicate tetrahedra Qi using an Arrhenius-type formalism. This study sets the stage for extending our findings to more complex, multicomponent slags, enhancing their practical application in industrial processes.

Sub-level caving with bottom ore drawing has gained wide acceptance in rich, soft, low magnetic iron ores because it provides moderate ore dilution and ore losses. The main problem here is the high rock pressure exerted on sub-level drives situated in the sub-level sill pillars. To reduce this effect, the ore block is divided into panels. This paper illustraes the method of determining the maximum panel width providing low maintenance cost of sub-level drives.

Uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus values measured in the laboratory on NX diamond drill cores were examined statistically to bring out any significant differences between different locations in the mine which might require special treatment in subsequent photoelastic analyses of the mine layout. Correlations were sought between the strength and modulus and various other features of the rock. The estimated mineral content of the core correlated with the modulus of the core, but the range of modulus values was too limited to show any strong correlation with compressive strength.Strength in the vertical direction was found to be significantly higher than in the horizontal direction and the same pattern was followed by the moduli, but was less pronounced. It was concluded that, whilst the modulus variations were significant, they would not invalidate any photoelastic studies.

Large blast furnaces demand high standards of preparation of feed materials which must meet tight specifications of chemical and physical quality. Measurement of these factors must be expeditious but the nature of the coke, sinter, ores and fluxes and the large tonnages involved requires substantial mechanical sampling plant. The equipment, its operations, and its problems, associated with the 5000 t.p.d. No.5 blast furnace at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla, are described and the efficacy of chemical blending achieved in the ore blending yards and sintering operation, is reported.

Mineral sand orebodies are typically mined for their TiO2 content. Increasingly over the past 30 years, the major mineral focus has shifted from natural rutile to ilmenite and an acceptance that the latter generally needs some form of upgrading for economic conversion into TiO2 pigment. This upgrading obviously has a cost, and in conjunction with diminishing mineable feed grades, results in higher cost TiO2 units for chloride route Pigment Plant feedstocks. The net cost of feedstock can be significantly influenced by the recovery and sale of accessory minerals and by-products from the processing chain to the extent that some producers have the potential to achieve a zero net cost. Whilst slagging plants typically reduce net cost from rutile, zircon and pig iron revenues, operations supporting Becher type synthetic rutile operations have been limited to revenues from rutile and zircon only. A range of alumino silicate minerals show industrial potential, as does activated carbon, iron oxide and gypsum, by-products of the synthetic rutile process. Tiwest is a good example of a company maximising revenue from the accessory minerals as well as from by-products of the synthetic rutile process.

A 14/12 millMAXTM pump was installed in the SAG1 grinding circuit as a trial replacement for the existing 12/10 Warman for performance comparison and in an attempt to overcome process difficulties. Krebs Engineers have developed the millMAXTM pump wet end to adapt to a variety of power frames. This system has been developed specifically for coarse material contained in mill discharge. SAG1 discharge screen undersize with a top size of 10 mm is collected in a flat bottom sump. Two 12/10 Warman pumps located on the same side of the sump, pump the screen undersize at 50 to 65 per cent solids to a distributor box which splits into two separate ball mill circuit sumps. One pump is installed towards the screen feed, while the other is towards the screen oversize discharge. The pump located towards the screen oversize discharge is prone to continual operating problems including pump bogging, high impeller and casing wear, and has consequently restricted SAG mill throughput. To rectify this pumping problem, it was decided to change-out the wet end of this pump with a millMAXTM. The design of the new pump enabled the wet end only to be retrofitted to the existing Warman pump frame, thus reducing change-over time. This was undertaken in the workshop under the supervision of a company representative where the pump, complete with bearing frame, new wet end, motor and base frame, was assembled. After installation of the millMAXTM pump during a SAG mill shutdown, performance indicators including motor power draw, sump level, and pump discharge pressure have been monitored. The trends indicate an increase in discharge pressure, low sump level, and low motor power draw. With the improved pumping efficiency there has been minimal pump bogging and no consequent SAG mill throughput restrictions. Pump wear rate has also decreased.

The paper presents a model of a multigrade monitoring-management structure for support to decision making and management in real and extended time in mineral processing (MP). The model was created as a result of a long-lasting research, design and development of mining, computer integrated monitoring-management systems. Apart from the general explanations, the authorsÆ state in the introduction that efficiency of a system for support to decision-making and management in mineral processing is more difficult to achieve by conventional approaches, than by the fuzzy logic approach. Starting from the multiphase structure of process flows in MP, the following are process and monitoring-management oriented graphs. The graphs served as a foundation of the multigrade hierarchical fuzzy model for support to decision making and management in MP. Following the example of the monitoring-management system of the æRudnikÆ mine flotation plant, fuzzy logic implementation was shown. The key conclusions of the paper are that fuzzyfication of layers of the decision making and management model has full justification due to the complexity and dynamics of mineral processing processes, complications and often insurmountable difficulties concerning the precise description of real systems by conventional mathematical tools, variability of external influences, and the (general) non-linearity of the MP processes management criteria functions.

AustraliaÆs success as a mineral producer and exporter rests heavily on its technological competence. That competence is based not just on adopting internationally-developed technology but also on ground breaking research conducted at Australian research institutions, many of which have global reputations. A number of forces are now operating to speed the introduction of advanced technology to mining and processing operations around the globe and this will create pressure on the Australian industryÆs ability to retain its competitive edge. Examining the foundations of that national research base and the associated culture of innovation may provide some guide to the dynamics that will be required to maintain technical competitiveness in the future.

Blasting is the primary comminution process in most mining operations. This process involves the highly complex and dynamic interaction between two main components. The first is the detonating explosive and the second is the rock mass into which the explosive is loaded. The mechanical properties of the rock material (such as dynamic strength, tensile strength, dynamic modulus and fracture toughness) are important considerations in understanding the blasting process. However, it is the characteristics of the geological defects (joints, foliation planes, bedding planes) within the rock mass that ultimately determine how effectively a blast performs in terms of fragmentation, all else being equal. The defect characteristics include, but are not limited to, their orientation, spacing, and mechanical properties. During the blasting process, some of the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass are substantially changed. From the blasting outcome point of view, the most notable and important is the change in fragment size distribution that the rock mass undergoes. The pre-blast in situ defect-bounded block size distribution is transformed into the post-blast muckpile fragment size distribution. Consequently, it is fundamental to our understanding of and ability to predict the blasting process that both the blastability of a rock mass and its transformation into the fragment size distribution can be appropriately quantified.

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a process by which coal is converted in situ to a combustible gas that can be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. The process has been used in commercial-size projects in the former Soviet Union for more than 40 years, while significant national research programs have been undertaken in the United States and Western Europe. The Chinchilla UCG project is located at a site southeast of Chinchilla in Queensland. The UCG operation commenced in December 1999. A controlled shutdown of the process was initiated in January 2002 and successfully completed in April 2003. The process is currently under conservation and ready for restoration of gas production for commercial use in the near future. Groundwater plays an important role in the gas formation process during UCG. Most of the process water required for chemical reactions is usually derived from the coal seam itself and from surrounding aquifers. If insufficient water is available for chemical reactions the UCG gas will contain reduced concentrations of combustible components, and conversely, excessive water influx into the process area would cool down the reactor and thus limit the energy available for gas production reactions. Because of the importance of groundwater in the gasification reactions, and the potential to contaminate groundwater if the process is not correctly controlled, it is essential to predict and to control the groundwater influx into underground gasifiers during and after underground gasification. Control of groundwater requires a thorough understanding of hydrogeological conditions in the vicinity of the gasifier in order to be able to predict inflow rates, and constant monitoring throughout the process of water production rates and groundwater pressure in the coal seam and adjacent aquifers. Hydrogeological testing and groundwater monitoring in the vicinity of the UCG operation commenced six months in advance of its initiation. Monitoring of groundwater pressures in the vicinity of the gasifier have also been undertaken using vibrating wire piezometers installed in the coal seam at varying distances from the gasifier. This paper presents the results of the hydrogeological testing and groundwater quality monitoring carried out at the site, which show that it is possible to operate a UCG process without uncontrolled impacts on groundwater.

The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator.
