The education system today is turning out potential Mine Managers and Superintendents for the coal industry who are lacking in adequate management knowledge. They are required by the Mining Act to be highly skilled operators who are operations and production oriented. This puts them in much the same category as airline pilots and ships' captains. The real need is for them to be management and profit orientated. Changes over the years in Managers' and Superintendents' roles are highlighted by identifying those professions and vocations with whom they must now work. Comparing classifications in the 1916 award and the current award, and making a comparison between management and mining degree courses, leads to the conclusion that separate degree courses are necessary for future Mine Managers and Mining Engineers. Mine management must become a profession in its own right if optimum profits are to be made from mining in the future.

This paper describes the design and constructability issues investigated in the selection of a trenchless solution in comparison to trenched construction options as part of a scoping study for the augmentation of the existing Bulimba Creek Trunk Sewer in Brisbane. Initial work involved the planning of alignment options vis-a-vis ground geology, geotechnical conditions, location and depth of shafts considering potential construction technology, flotation and stability of the tunnel, availability of construction sites and the influence of construction works on neighbourhood properties and the immediate environment. Two design pipe sizes, DN1200 and DN1500, were considered, and factors including jacking forces, specification of product pipes, pipe joints, pipe jacking methods and the associated impacts of ground settlement were carried out. Of particular interest was research on suitable lubricating fluids with the potential to minimise jacking forces and maximise the length of pipeline between launch and reception shafts.

When a highly anisotropic or weak rock mass is subjected to high-stress conditions, it can lead to large ongoing deformations or squeezing ground conditions. Squeezing ground conditions can impose increased support costs, delays associated with rehabilitation, and disruption to production schedules. Ultimately, in more severe cases, it may result in complete drive closure. Several recent case studies investigated the squeezing mechanism and measures to control squeezing ground in underground mines and also to design appropriate ground support systems. Effective management of squeezing ground conditions requires a sound understanding of the failure mechanism and the driving forces. Once the failure mechanism is understood, the appropriate ground support system should be tailored to specifically manage the critical driving forces that control the squeezing mechanism. Support type, support stiffness, reinforcement length, support density, installation times and mining sequence all have important impact on the effectiveness of the support system. This paper provides a case study at the Ballarat Gold Mine in Australia, where drive squeezing was associated with foliated ground conditions located below 700 m depth. Numerical modelling was used to better understand the failure mechanism and the driving forces that lead to squeezing conditions. The effectiveness of various support types was compared to installed ground support performance. This has provided a credible methodology for assessing and optimising the selection of reinforcement in squeezing ground conditions. CITATION:Talebi, R, Roache, B and Vakili, A, 2018. The Australian mining industry isstill labouring under the impression. created by the Fitzgerald Report that it does not pay suffic- ient tax. This would appear to be the raison d'etre of the resource rent tax debate. The authors quantitatively compare the cash flows to the mine and government resulting from a large strip coal mine in central Queensland under a number of Australian and international taxation policies. The Liberal government policies are found to be internationally competitive while the Labor 1975 policy is excessively punitive. The present value of the returns to the public from the Liberal 1977 policy vary between three and six times the net present value to the mine, which belies the necessity for the imposition of a super tax. The levelling of a special royalty, excess rail freight, by Queensland could severely re- strict the development of new mines in the Bowen Basin. The impact of excessive freight rates is analysed on a combined strip-deep mine typical of the new projects nearing development in the region. Otherwise economic mines can be made marginal or even sub economic by this tax. Even with moderate rail freights, the mining tax laws of New South Wales are more favourable to the industry than are Queensland's.

These are briefly reviewed, along with the major sources of data available in the literature, and the implementation of the models in the program.

In areas where undeveloped land represents a scarce resource, an upgraded post mining land use can result in economic benefits to both the mining company and to the community. A study undertaken at Allied Queensland Coalfields Ltd's Aberdare Colliery located between Brisbane and Ipswich during 1986/1987, assessed the costs and benefits of developing the site following mining for grazing, forestry and residential uses. The proposed final land use plan comprised a combination of these uses which can be upgraded to higher valued uses once subsidence monitoring of backfilled opencut areas and dumps indicates that total settlement has reached acceptable levels. The study involved the documentation of existing site environmental parameters and the delineation of site opportunities and constraints. The unpredictable nature of settlement over backfilled opencuts and overburden dumps represents the major constraint to urban development on mined areas.

Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

The effect of blast loads on beams is one of the main issues in the analysis of steel structure. In this study, experimental tests on steel beam under blast loading, and also numerical simulation by the Autodyn software to analyse these structures, is discussed. Experiments on steel beam size of 12 by Emulite4 explosive with 30 mm diameter and cortex is done. ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) produces zinc and lead simultaneously from zinc and lead sulphide concentrates and recovers copper and precious metals into a lead bullion. The strength of sinter is important to keep permeability in the shaft of the Imperial Smleting Furnace. The residual sulphur content of the sinter is also important as it causes metal losses into slag. The paper describes an investigation into the sintering operations to improve sulphur elimination and sinter strength. The micro structure of the sinter and the effect of the blast rate, sintering temperature etc have been studied.

Aberfoyle Ltd. has utilised a variety of flotation technologies in the Hellyer concentrator in North-Western Tasmania. Hellyer ore, with its slow flotation rates and low rate differentials between values and gangue, requires the use of long residence times and low air consumption rates in the flotation circuit. The operation of the flotation circuit, with a nominal residence time of 7 hours, has necessitated the development of a control system to provide continuity through operator shift changes. Cell selections at Hellyer varied from the 54 m3 hybrid Dorf Oliver / Maxwell (DO/MX) cells, to smaller 32 m3 Maxwell cells, conventional Don-Oliver 300 (8.5 m3) and 600 (17 m3) trough cells, and a column cell. The advantages of the large cells included low specific power consumptions and a low capital cost. However, problems with mixing and the maintenance of consistent froth depth have been identified in the hybrid DO/MX cells. Short circuiting in the trough cells was apparent, causing a considerable reduction in metallurgical performance. The column cell performs to expectation, although the application is not ideal.

Mathematical modelling of continuous rotary vacuum filtration has been limited by the wide range of variables and the absence of connecting equations linking the variables. The filter type and size, mechanical design and predicted performance are generally determined by laboratory leaf tests on representative samples of slurry, or plant samples from an operating filter. A model has been developed which includes the major process variables such as slurry feed rate and concentration, cake thickness, wash water and air flow rates, to predict the filter production throughput, cake moisture and residual solubles. Where possible the model incorporates well established equations relating form filtration, washing and drying rates of the filter cake. Where an equation has not been formulated, standard curve fitting programs have been used to establish an algorithm. The theoretical equations and the derived algorithms are defined in the text. A major feature of the model is that operators, metallurgists, process, mechanical and instrumentation engineers become more aware of the interaction of process variables, the principles of the equipment design and its limitations when operating at peak performance. The model has specific application in the alumina industry where a high moisture content of the filter cake can increase chemical losses and energy costs, and in the coal industry where overseas companies are insisting on lower export coal moistures.

The characteristics, together with the volatility of precious metal prices, make evaluations of precious metal deposits extremely difficult to make. "Wet-weather or 24×7 wet-trafficability is a commendable design objective for unpaved mine haul roads, but practically often difficult to achieve, due both to the road sheeting material selected, and also its breakdown under the action of traffic and environment. Accidents allied to wet-trafficability issues, either due to rain or often more commonly, over-watering of mine roads, is increasing and especially the loss of control or uncontrolled vehicle movements categorisation. The dominant system failure is that once vehicle control is lost, control cannot be regained.The friction supply, or ‘skid resistance’ of a mine haul road sheeting is critical to the safe operation of the road and data has to be collated concerning the variation of friction supply with sheeting material engineering or indicator properties. In the light of the paucity of data existing in this field, this paper presents the contributory research that informs the development of improved and validated unpaved mine road friction supply estimates, based on a number of mine site evaluations across a range of sheeting material types and characteristic parameters, leading to improved predictive models of friction supply.Results from this preliminary review will enable operators to assess their road sheeting materials, improve and validate unpaved mine road friction supply estimates. Modern minerals projects face serious challenges in earning and maintaining acceptance by their key stakeholders. Factors which underpin effective response to managing these challenges include consideration of public affairs issues from the earliest planning stages, building robust alliances with a range of influential partners, developing a level of transparency in all operations and decision-making and integrating activities towards resolving key strategic issues. Effective community relations is vital and there are a number of elements common to the best approaches. These include senior management support and involvement, appropriate involvement in project decisions and activities by community members and company responsiveness to community expectations. The project's operations manager and executive team must fully commit to developing the capability and processes to meet these challenges. They require a whole of project response and it is not an option to manage them peripherally.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

The removal of sulfur from SO2 containing flue gas is improved by adsorbing SO2 into solution with manganese ions as catalyser, however, burnt lime slurry has to be added to modify solution pH and the CaSO3 by-product is of low economic value. In this paper a novel one step process for simultaneous manganese leaching-desulfurisation of flue gas is presented. An investigation of the effect of process parameters included flow rate and SO2 concentration in flue gas, adsorbing time, solution to solid mass ratio, leaching time, and their impact on the oxidation and removal of SO2 from flue gas. The catalysing mechanism of manganese ions on the oxidation and SO2 removal was demonstrated by calculation of the species originating from manganese ions and SO2 in the solution according to solution chemistry. SO2 removal in the adsorbing solution took place at pH 5 - 6, where manganese ions dominantly occurred as Mn2+, and the chain reactions for oxidation of SO2 starting from HSO3- were improved by the presence of Mn2+. SO2 bearing flue gas was effectively desulfurised by leaching rhodochrosite (MnCO3), with desulfurisation of the flue gas and modifying the solution pH being achieved simultaneously, and MnSO4 of high economic value recovered from the leachate. 85 per cent manganese leaching and over 70 per cent desulfurisation of the SO2-bearing flue gas were achieved with only one adsorption stage under optimum conditions.

"This paper presents a case study demonstrating active geotechnical pit slope management at the now completed Carina Iron Ore Project operated by Mineral Resources Ltd (MRL). The site is located 105 km north-east of Southern Cross, Western Australia. The paper is primarily focused on the slope stability failure modes and the remedial measures employed to maintain mining.Between a quarter and a third of the excavated slopes were impacted by some form of instability that was beyond expectations of the intended slope design criteria and common practice. Ongoing mining was supported by intensive geotechnical pit slope management including close cooperation between geotechnical, mine planning and operations staff to achieve timely and practical mining solutions.Mining encountered varied slope failure mechanisms which required a combination of remedial solutions comprising: horizontal depressurisation holes, deferral of excavation, unloading, buttressing and catch berms.The root cause of the challenging slope performance was a mismatch between the predicted and encountered geotechnical model, resulting from a failure to recognise the critical mechanisms that control slope stability.Despite the extensive zones of instabilities at completion of mining, full ore recovery was achieved without major delays and in a controlled and safe manner.Citation:Fowler, M, Strang, D and Jaine, R, 2016. International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.
