This work presents the fundamental properties of CITIC magnetite concentrate and its performance in pelletising and sintering. CITIC concentrate has been widely used in pelletising to produce pellets for blast furnaces. It is also used in sintering to benefit from its sintering performance. CITIC concentrate has excellent balling properties owing to its size distribution, particle surface properties, large specific surface area and balling index, leading to strong green pellets and product pellets. When used in sintering at appropriate levels, sinter bed permeability improves, productivity is increased while coke consumption reduces, and sinter strength improves.

Hunter Valley Operations in partnership with Orica Explosives designed a process to optimise coal extraction at depths greater than 65 m below the Hunter River in a safe and cost effective manner. The process involved a team approach to investigate the relationship between geology, mining sequence, vibration and blasting methods adopted. From this an optimum method for uncovering the coal was developed.

"It has long been recognised that the barometer infl uences areas of underground coal mines that havebeen sealed off from the current, or active, mine workings but it appears litt le formal research hasbeen done on how the barometer aff ects the goafstream sample point. Based on statistical analysis of samples from a number of mines from Queensland and New South Wales it can be concluded that there is a direct correlation between the barometer and oxygen concentration at a goafstream sample point. To help mitigate some of the high consequence hazards within the underground coal industry and protect the health and safety of the persons within that environment, many monitoring tools are utilised. A control recognised in management plans prescribed under New South Wales and Queensland legislation is the need to conduct monitoring to identify the early warning signs of spontaneous combustion. One of the monitoring tools utilised involves a bagsample being collected from a goafstream sample point then returned to the surface for analysis.When the sample is incorrectly collected, the resultant analysis from a gas chromatograph provides litt le value to the persons charged with the obligation of operating the coal mine at an acceptable level of risk. This, therefore, increases the probability of spontaneous combustion leading to a loss of equipment, mine and in the worst case, life. When the sample is collected correctly, the analysis presents early warning signs of low level oxidation allowing corrective action to be taken, to prevent the oxidation accelerating to spontaneous combustion. The eff ect the barometer has on this sample point should be recognised and the knowledge imparted to persons who conduct sampling to remove a variable in the bag sample collection process. This will ensure the persons operating the mine have a bett er understanding of what is happening within their longwall goaf."

The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand near the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 45 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. The Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) is owned jointly by New Zealand Oil & Gas Limited (NZOG) and private investors.   The project has followed a long and difficult road towards project implementation which is now a reality with mine construction scheduled to commence in November 2005. The first stage of the project, the consent and land access process has been the most difficult. Resource consents for the project were first applied for, granted and appealed in 1998. A second round of modified resources consents followed a similar path in 2001. Following consultation with a range of parties including local and central government as well as the Department of Conservation, in March 2004 the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through Department of Conservation land. In October 2004, the Environment Court issued a Memorandum of Consent granting resource consents with conditions that had been negotiated between PRCC and the appellants.   The second stage of the project, investigation and design, commenced in December 2004 and was completed in June 2005 with the PRCC board ratifying the project capital and operating budgets. While the investigation and design work was proceeding, PRCC were also engaged in securing private equity and bank debt funding for the project. Formal Board approval to proceed with project construction was granted in September 2005 following completion of fund raising.   The project consists of a number of significant construction activities, namely: +        10.5 km of mine access road through previous logged and virgin rain forest; +        2.2 km of tunnel through metamorphic rock; +        a coal preparation plant about 8.3 km from the mine portal; +        an underground coal preparation plant; and +        a major slurry pump station, high and low pressure underground water supply systems to support hydraulic mining units and underground coal transport respectively.   Project construction is expected to be completed in April 2007 with completion of the ventilation shaft. Mine production will commence in December 2006 with coal from pit bottom development which will be carried out by the mine owner.

"OZ MineralsÆ Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-east of Adelaide, 130 km north-east of BHP BillitonÆs Olympic Dam operation and 130 km south-east of the regional township of Coober Pedy, in the Gawler Craton region of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a 10 Mt/a ore throughput capacity, operating well over the design rate of 8 Mt/a. Increased throughput rates have seen a decreased water recovery from the tailing thickener due to operating above design. Subsequently, greater pressure was placed on the site water balance and bore field off-take rates due to increased evaporation losses from greater volumes of water reporting to the tailing storage facility. This resulted in a trade-off between water availability and milling rates as part of the operating strategy.Two projects were implemented to increase the tailing thickener underflow density, thus improving water recovery directly back into the operating plant, reducing water losses via evaporation and decreasing the reliance on the bore field system operating at maximum rates to maintain mill throughput. The two projects were: tailing thickener feedwell redesign implementation of the Manta Cube control system.This paper discusses the background, implementation and benefits attained from these two key projects. Combined they have allowed a two to three per cent increase in tailing thickener underflow density to be consistently achieved, which has allowed greater water recovery. As a result, the processing plant has been able to operate at higher throughput rates when required, with greater water availability in the process plant recirculating system and a reduction in occurrences of the plant being æslowed downÆ due to water supply shortfalls. Much practical experience has been gathered in the last 30 years of application of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) integrated with ball milling in size reduction of fine iron ore concentrates. The company Vale S.A, in Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil), was one of the pioneers applying the technology prior to pelletisation with an outstanding size reduction energy efficiency in the circuit and a significant increment in the specific surface area of the product. Recent studies by the authors demonstrated benefits of modelling and simulation to improve the performance of HPGRs in this particular application, with the model being able to describe HPGR performance under different operating conditions and under variations of feed size distribution. Despite these important advances, this modelling approach has only been used offline and under steady-state conditions. The present work applies the modified Torres and Casali model proposed by the authors in pseudodynamic simulations. The ability of the model to predict the characteristics of the product in real-time is evaluated using data available online for the pellet feed preparation circuit. Results demonstrated the model capabilities to map the physical operation and give a realistic representation of the process. Additionally, the model is demonstrated to be able to support the pellet feed production by providing extended real-time information of the process, making it a useful tool for improvement of the operational strategies and process stability.

"The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program. Several studies have been conducted on the economic analysis of mining near-Earth asteroids for resources for use in Earth orbit. While these studies use detailed economic figures of merit, they often use many invalid assumptions in the trajectory design. Factors such as the energy and propellant requirements are estimated with analytic methods, however, the stay-time at the asteroid and the spacing of repeated launch opportunities are not taken into account. The work outlined in this paper attempts to combine detailed trajectory design methods with newly defined economic figures of merit to improve the economic assessment of asteroid mining missions. ALTHOUGH the mineral Stannite (Cu2S, FeS, SnS2 , also known as "bell 'metal" ore, tin pyrites, etc.) is found in various parts of the world, in only three iocalities has development proved it to exist in sufficient quantity to warrant the erection of treatment plants. Two of those mines are in New South Wales and one is an Tasmania. The writer will deal with the latter-the Conah mine, Zeehan, Tasmania, it being the most important and extensive occurrence so far worked. The Conah mine was first worked by a Tasmanian company for silver-Iead, and was fairly remunerative until the zone of secondary enrichment was passed through, when the lodes became too poor for further exploitation. During the time that the line was thus operated the stannite lode was discovered. It occurs in a graphitic slate, which, in common with the slates and spilites of the Zeehan field, is probably underlain by the stanniferous granite which outcrops two miles to the west. The Conah stannite lode is older than the galena lodes of the district, being faulted by one of the latter. Near the surface the lode was very rich.Shipments were sent out assaying 150 oz. of silver per ton, 20% copper, and 18% tin. An .apparently homogeneous sample of stannite, analyzed by the writer for the Tasmanian Geological survey, gave the following results:

Simulation can play an important role in the design, optimization and control of complete industrial processes, the most appropriate method depending on the particular application. Most commonly, process models or simulators are means of representing the process which are either purely mathematical or physical. Mathematical models, however, almost invariably need to be based to some extent on experimental data or require experimental verification before they can be used with confidence. Ways in which experimental and mathematical modelling techniques can be combined to best effect are discussed, with reference to the simulation of iron ore induration and direct reduction processes. A novel method is presented for the simulation of direct reduction shaft furnaces. Small scale apparatus has been developed in which ore or pellet samples are subjected to the changing environment of the industrial process. The time dependent conditions (solid temperature and gas compositions) are provided by a mathematical representation of heat transfer and the conservation of mass and energy in the process Simulated.

‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. Maintaining catch berm capacity in open pit mines through controlled blasting prevents production delays associated with managing risks associated with wall instability. A method has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation of presplit holes at Century Mine. Different controlled blasting techniques are used to control wall quality and decrease the risk. The performance of presplit drilling, in terms of deviation from design has been investigated. A methodology has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation in three dimensions. This methodology was converted into a series of algorithms capable of handling an extensive range of data. The methodology was applied to a case study at Century Mine to evaluate the performance of drilling on two presplit blasts. Overall, 67 drill holes were investigated in the case study. The drill hole deviation was quantified in terms of three parameters: skewness, linearity and drill hole deviation parameter. Methods for quantifying each parameter were developed. Skewness, a measure of the amount of curvature and linearity, was defined as the measure of the consistency of the gradient of the drill hole. Drill hole deviation parameter is defined as the average measured deviation of the surveyed drill hole position from the design position. Acceptable drill hole deviation tolerances for each of the defined parameters were developed by analysing drill hole deviation parameters with respect to implications to catch berm capacity. Verification of the methodology was confirmed through the comparing of the completed drill hole deviation results using both visual inspection and cross analysis for each of the three methods. Holes with an R squared value of less than 0.97 for skewed deviation were classified as having skewed deviation, while holes with a difference in gradient of 3.5 were classified as having linear deviation. The results show that 76 per cent of the drill holes had deviation. Of this, 19 per cent were skewed, 57 per cent had linearity and 12 per cent contained both skewed and linearity deviation.

In 2010 Agnew Gold Mine (AGM) struggled to produce the required tonnages from its stopes. The longhole rises used to create void in stopes were unreliable and often failed to gain the designed rise height. The number of firings per stope was having an adverse impact on the ground conditions at the stope brows, impeding stope productivity.Through practical experimentation with longhole drill rigs, box hole rigs and development drill rigs as well as trialling new methods in conjunction with reviewing drill hole data, drill hole accuracy was observed to be an issue on-site. Innovative dragging methods such as the reverse drag, combined with a slope instead of a vertical face on the rear of stopes, have improved dragging and a reduction of firings per stope, enabling larger production blasts.The methods trialled and subsequently implemented at AGM have facilitated the mine achieving budgeted targets for six consecutive quarters. Upon subduction, water is liberated from the sediments and the porous struc- ture of the oceanic crust and from de- hydration of minerals for redistribution and chemical reaction. A survey of pro- cesses which are likely to occur along the subducting plate reveals that water may well be basic in subduction induced gas generation, magma formation and ore deposition. In analogy to the industrial water gas process, reaction of water with car- bonaceous matter, in subducted sediments is likely to yield substantial volumes of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. While water and carbon dioxide appear to play a determining role in the development of differentiated magmas, hydrogen will react with metal sulfides and sulfur to form hydrogen sulfide which is essential in sulfide ore depo- sition. A survey of possible metal extrac- tion chemistry along subduction suggests a stepwise solubilization of metals from sediments and oceanic crust, and a poten tial accumulation of dissolved metals in zones of characteristic composition. The metal spectrum in ore deposits at near surface appears to reflect the com- position of the solution in the respec- tive subduction zone. A tendency for preferential solubi- lization of copper at subductidn level, from among the transition metals, an in- creasing generation of hydrogen sulfide in the sane direction and partition effects as well as sulfide precipitation characteristics lead to enrichment in copper and to its selective deposition in the direction towards the trench as observed in S. Latin America. A postscript deals with the formation of native copper.

The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

Mining project developers are committed to taking on all the challenges and obligations of financial risk management. It is interesting that our current models of project finance have not changed markedly in principle for some 700 years, yet the rules which prepare the way for effective project assessment and subsequent loan management still do not seem to be well understood by project or corporate developers. Probability and gravity fill the opposing trays of the golden balance of financial risk. Understanding the relationship between these opposing, but intimately related elements is critically important for successful risk management. It is important to move beyond the qualitative approach and use quantitative methodologies to measure the financial impact of the occurrence of each major risk. We live in a world where the only constant is change and thus it is not surprising that a bankerÆs life is still governed by assessing, measuring and pricing risk. Banks are attracted to funding well managed companies with strong cash flow projects. But we are more risk averse compared with the credit appetites of late last century. This attitudinal shift has resulted in tougher term sheets for the early 21st century, encompassing more conditions, warranties, undertakings and stronger cash sweep provisions. Banks require well balanced portfolios to achieve an acceptable spread of risk, thus there is a more restricted market for small company lending than that available to large multi-project corporate entities with less concentrated risk profiles. Because of this focus, junior company debt finance remains comparatively expensive and especially so for more challenging geographical and political environments.

Mobile robots have been making impressive inroads in a variety of domains. Within the Mining-RoX project, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is exploring a further frontier for mobile and autonomous robots: underground mines. The potential benefits of mobile robots in underground mining are plentiful as underground mines are strenuous and potentially dangerous working environments for humans. A higher degree of automation, with robots either acting as helpers for human miners or even replacing all human personnel deployed underground, could help to significantly reduce mining costs. In disaster cases, rescue robots could help to find missing personnel. Unmanned mines operated by robots alone would not endanger human lives at all. Further use cases, and a particular focus of the Mining-RoX project, are mobile robots that gather sensory information of the underground mine (eg for the purpose of creating detailed 2D and 3D maps) as well as monitoring environmental conditions such as air and water quality. This paper presents the design of a prototypical mobile robot for mapping and monitoring underground mines. A generic robotic platform was extended with various 2D and 3D imaging devices as well as other sensors. First results from test runs in an underground mine are reported. The relative influences of sinter mineralogy, sintering temperature, solid and pore macro- and microstructure on iron ore sinter physical strength are not yet fully understood. Whilst a range of analysis techniques have been used by researchers to evaluate sinter physical properties and sinter mineralogy, none have been able to directly link sinter mineralogy and physical strength under controlled conditions. CSIRO has developed a unique laboratory method to study the fundamental melting properties of fine iron ores in a laboratory furnace under a controlled temperature and gas atmosphere environment designed to simulate the industrial sintering process. Compacted tablet samples for a 0.41 per cent and a 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series were fired in a tube furnace at various temperatures, cooled, then tumbled using a modified Bond abrasion test apparatus to determine a relative tumble index (TI) at each temperature. Quantitative XRD (QXRD) analysis was then carried out on the tumbled samples and optical image analysis (OIA) was conducted on polished sections of a separately fired compact in each case. The amount of total SFCA was found to decrease with increasing firing temperature for both alumina series with the total amount of SFCA higher in the 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series compared to 0.41 per cent Al2O3 series samples. The increase in the amount of magnetite and hematite with increasing firing temperature was largely at the expense of a decrease in total SFCA. Overall, there was good agreement between the quantitative mineralogy determined from QXRD versus OIA for SFCA, hematite and magnetite. Qualitative analysis of high magnification images of the sinter correlated with both the OIA and QXRD results.

"From paving the way in gaining approval for the first metalliferous in-pit tailings storage facility (TSF) in Victoria, to developing a deposition methodology to optimise the storage capacity and provide a final rehabilitated surface which replicates the premining topography, in-pit tailings storage has proven not only to be a cost-effective means for tailings management at Fosterville Gold Mine, but also one which provides significant economic, social and environmental benefits. Coupled with ongoing raising of the existing above ground TSF and commissioning of a new above ground TSF, Fosterville Gold Mine have to date effectively used three open pits for in-pit tailings storage, with one of the pits currently progressing through the capping and vegetation establishment phases of closure.This paper presents the process adopted by Fosterville Gold Mine in their flotation tailings management, from design and operational phases through to rehabilitation implementation.
