This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

"The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.Trends amongst service providers will be put forward as well as developing options and alternatives. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. The legacy issues from mining can, and have often, extended well beyond the closure of operations. However, conventional cost-benefit analysis provides little incentive to implement initiatives at the project development stages of a new mining project as the costs that will be incurred towards the end of the mine life, 20 years or longer, appear minor in net present value (NPV) terms. This analysis can be misleading as the true costs of managing post-mining land can continue for many years, or decades, after mining ceases and any resulting unfavourable legacy issues can delay or prevent government permits or licences to develop new resources. Proper upfront planning is critical for implementing successful rehabilitation and closure strategies. The investment in this planning needs to be done in a structured and rigorous manner taking into consideration the long-term and broad benefits of sustainable land uses after mine closure. The advantages of such an approach could include the streamlining of regulatory approvals by early advice to the regulator of identified issues and responses to those issues, and clear evidence that a strong social licence to operate ethic with local, regional and national benefits is included in the decision-making process. This paper investigates the potential closure options for two case studies at the early stages of project development - concept and prefeasibility. By using a sustainability framework that can identify opportunities and risks, prospective initiatives that deliver enhanced environmental, community and social benefits will be compared with compliance-orientated approaches. This comparison is made across the Five Capitals Sustainability Model - natural, human, social, manufactured and financial. The results of this analysis demonstrate that upfront planning during project development and due care and effort during the life of the working mine will reduce the risks of long-term detrimental legacy issues. This study examines the application of Landsat TM data to the identification of hydro- thermal alteration in the arid terrain of the El Salvador region of north Chile. Numerical reflectance values were extracted from the digital Landsat TM data for a variety of rock surfaces, including four parts of the El Salvador gossan, for each of six spectral bands. These reflectance values were analysed statistically in order to select the three spectral bands, combined as a colour composite image, that are most efficient in discriminating different varieties of alteration and for general geolog- ical interpretation. The most cost effective com- posite image for this area is a combination of bands 1,4 and 7 as the blue, green and red components respectively, with simple contrast enhancement. This image is superior to some much more expensive enhancement techniques and allows unambiguous identification of areas of hydrothermal alteration larger than about 50m. Throughout the minerals industry, it is evident that a new wave of technological innovation is needed as the mining sector looks for ways to achieve higher security and safety as well as higher production rates with less investment. Innovation has always been one of the key factors in achieving success within the mining industry. However, its importance will be especially relevant in the coming years if negative trends in commodity prices and new challenges facing the industry (lower grades, deeper mines and economy of scales) are to be overcome and the future sustainability and profitability of the sector ensured.The drive towards fully autonomous operations has begun, with the implementation of automated systems in both surface and underground operations. However, these automated systems are currently planned and realised with well-defined automated tasks within structured environments and isolated spaces. Currently, there is no interaction between automated systems, manned systems or humans, which creates physically isolated environments.For fully autonomous and continuous operations, the automated systems need to operate in environments that enable flexible interactions between automated machines, tele- and manually operated machines and humans.In this paper, we address the automation paradigm considering the synergistic collaboration between humans and automated systems. In this paradigm, humans and machines would interact in a flexible, collaborative and synergistic way without the need for isolation. The implementation of this concept within mining operations will have to be underpinned by science and technological developments and will require adaptation from many fields, including robotics, automation, distributed systems, communication, human factors, pattern recognition and mine design.The paper also presents the research and development work being undertaken at the University of Chile’s Advanced Mining Technology Center, in collaboration with the Chilean mining industry. Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

Bulk explosives provide the energy to move a rock mass and reduce it to an optimal size (fragmentation). The intensity of energy needed depends on several factors including a customer’s geology and end objectives. An energy mapping tool has been developed to help customers to determine their bulk explosive needs based on these objectives.At one end of the energy map dealing with high-energy products, a new range of bulk explosives products for surface mining have been developed. With these products, it is possible to provide blast designs with up to nearly triple the relative bulk strength (RBS) of ANFO, and address primary focus areas for mining operations, including the reduction of drill and blast costs, improvements in production rates, better face advance through improved broken stock management, better drill productivity, improved milling efficiency and lower energy costs in surface mines.In this paper, field trial results from the first level of new high-energy products are presented. These products have an RBS 2.25 times that of ANFO. Industry variations of a smaller diameter (89 mm) pumped product for civil quarrying applications, and for large diameter (311 mm) hard-rock metalliferous mines are presented. For both cases, the run-of-mine fragmentation levels obtained with the new bulk explosives are contrasted with the fragmentation profile generated with the currently accepted product range applied in similar geological conditions. The new products show increased fragmentation across the measured size distribution, with reduction in P50 values of 20 and 37 per cent over the currently used product for the 311 mm and 89 mm diameter blastholes respectively.CITATION:Wilkinson, D, Rigby, G, Norgard, J and Thomson, S, 2015. The Channel Tunnel is an outstanding example of an undersea tunnel and its design illustrates most of the unique features of this type of tunnel. The marine site investigation was partic- ularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. To minimise this interference the time the drilling vessel was required to remain on station was kept to a minimum by expediting the drilling and the insitu tests as far as was practicable. To avoid additional unforeseen costs the contract documents were framed to take particular account of marine practice. The limited access at the coast line meant that for economy, maximum tunnel advance rates had to be attained. Ground excavation, handling and disposal methods and the provision of the lining were optimised and equipment specified in detail to ensure that no one com- ponent was delayed by a lack of capacity or mechanical failure in any other.

Queensland legislation, industry codes and policies relating to mine rehabilitation and closure create the expectation of successful progressive rehabilitation and that the post-mining environment is being returned to a condition suited to a pre-agreed, beneficial end use. Yet none of the rehabilitated mined land in the Bowen Basin has been certified as successful by authorities suggesting there is a gap between current rehabilitation and the full environmental outcomes that the legislation could deliver. We tested the veracity of this perspective and reflect on where responsibility for any discrepancy lies.We first reviewed current Queensland legislation and industry codes relating to stakeholder engagement, rehabilitation, closure planning and post-mining land use. We tested the accessibility of the documentation trail for several recent coal-mining projects in the Bowen Basin and examined the level of detail in approval documentation. We then assessed the rehabilitation performance reports of these mines in relation to the contents of their approval documents. Legislation, guidelines and codes repeatedly emphasise the need to plan for closure before mine operations begin and to progressively perform rehabilitation with an agreed end-use in mind. Early stakeholder involvement in these processes and transparency of actions and outcomes are also encouraged by government publications. Overall, in terms of transparency, we found that relevant documents are generally available to the persistent enquirer. However, the rehabilitation and closure undertakings given in both mine company and regulator documentation were commonly generic and rehabilitation obligations were not explicitly incorporated into rehabilitation plans. Rehabilitation reporting was also weak in that no distinction is required between successful and unsuccessful revegetation, nor to closure objectives and mine completion criteria. Responsibility for the apparent disconnect between regulatory intent and actual performance appears to begin with the regulator too readily allowing generic information and in not requiring performance reporting to correspond with approved post-mine conditions. As a result, companies may have a much greater rehabilitation and closure risk than mine management expects. The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. As a project moves through the mine life cycle, the quantity of data available increases and the understanding of the orebody matures. Incorporating new information quickly and efficiently in current 3D models, is essential for adding value across the life-of-mine value chain. At the Martabe Gold Mine, the resource development group manages 14 drill rigs on six resource projects, including three operating mines. The Martabe deposits are geologically complex and the volume of new information that becomes available each day is substantial. It is imperative that new geological and assay information is integrated into the 3D models as soon as possible, so that drill planning and targeting can be modified accordingly. Martabe uses Leapfrog<sup>®</sup> 3D software to update and interrogate the 3D models on a dynamic basis as data becomes available. This results in faster and more effective changes to drill planning and schedules. The impact of this is better drill productivity and cost savings due to optimal drill targeting, and availability of up-to-date models incorporating the most current data. For decades, organisations worldwide have been working to overcome challenges associated with new technology adoption while keeping up with rapid growth, development, and globalisation. In minerals processing, the challenges in developing and implementing solutions that contribute to the mining value chain are unique from other markets, as mining operations expect that world-class suppliers provide them solutions to gain a competitive advantage in their operation, production, performance as a financial asset, and as a long-term partner as we move into the future of mining. A simple shift in mindset is proven key to successful technology implementation. Change leaders must no longer think of their expertise in the area of application as their only responsibility; they must make a mental shift and see themselves in dual roles that strive to integrate the perspectives and needs of both developers and users. Successful change leaders must: (1) collaborate, seeking user involvement to ensure fit between product and operational needs, (2) demonstrate commitment to receive new technology, and (3) communicate to achieve an eventual shift of ownership from supplier to users that is seamless. Additionally, this strategy contributes to the mining value chain, as it allows developers and implementers to evaluate how change contributes to the asset’s position both within the company and in the commodities market. This paper will explain the shift in perspective for new technology implementation in detail and provide recommendations that operations can emulate, using examples of real challenges and lessons learned during a commissioning of the CYCLONEtrac™ Particle Size Tracking (PST) system at Cerro Verde’s C2 Concentrator. This concentrator has led technological change for plant optimisation, witnessed improved Net Metal Production (NMP), among other benefits with PST, the only technology in the market capable of providing real-time, online, and direct particle size measurement at the individual hydrocyclone level

The New Zealand rail authority, Kiwi Rail and Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA), are jointly planning a new mainline rail link between Auckland’s downtown Britomart Station and the existing Western Line at Mt Eden. In 2009, APB&B, a consortia of Aecom, Beca, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Hassell Architects where commissioned to develop the conceptual design, Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE) and business case for the new 3 km rail line towards preparing a Notice of Requirement to protect the route through Auckland’s central business district.This paper describes the engineering challenges in the development of the conceptual design for the three proposed underground stations, the running tunnels and connections to the existing network. Feasible alignment and station location options were developed and evaluated using multi-criteria analysis based on key client functional requirements, constraint mapping and environmental impacts. The resulting preferred scheme was then developed to a conceptual design suffi cient for assessment of environmental effects, risks, and the development of a robust construction methodology to allow high level capital cost estimates.The paper describes some of the major challenges overcome to develop the concept, including steep gradients, narrow street envelopes with existing buildings and structures, the need for large platform spaces with low ECBF rock cover and complex connections at Britomart and the main line near Mt Eden.The development of the conceptual design of the underground stations in particular demonstrates the need for a holistic value engineering approach to satisfying the architectural and functional requirements, in a highly constrained dense urban environment and at lowest practical cost. The construction methodology was a key input to the conceptual design development throughout.The conceptual design will be used as the fundamental basis for the development of the AEE and business case for the project in the future.

In recent decades, significant advances have improved the modelling techniques for predicting slope failure. Predicting failures is vital in open pit mining due to the significant risk posed to personnel and equipment from unstable pit walls. Failures not only cause harm and damage to people and equipment but also cause delays to production and subsequently increase operational costs. Coupled with improvements in modelling techniques, utilisation of advanced scanning systems, such as high-definition imagery from UAVs has enabled faster and more precise mapping and modelling. However, one key element required for accurate slope stability modelling and monitoring is the ability for mine geotechnical engineers to have an accurate understanding of the mineralogy and moisture content of slopes, in real-time. To address this challenge, research has been undertaken to utilise hyperspectral imaging across a broad spectrum, combined with high-definition imagery, and LiDAR to scan slopes for minerals and moisture content. In addition to accurately mapping mineralogy and moisture, the data must be collected autonomously and remotely to ensure ongoing safety. The results show that there are many direct and indirect benefits from this new technology, including the ability to monitor slopes at a safe distance and in real-time, improved accuracy of modelling, detection of risks, and improving the automation workflow for geotechnical engineers. The paper presents recommendations for the implementation of the technology in open cut mining environments.

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

The DeGrussa copper-gold deposit is located 900 km North of Perth. Copper-gold bearing massive sulfide lenses occur in lower greenschist facies meta-sedimentary and mafic volcanics of the Bryah Basin. Regional folding, faulting, and tilting of the stratigraphy primarily occurred during the Capricorn Orogen (Johnson, 2013). The Shiraz Fault and Merlot Fault are regional oblique-sinistral faults that offset the DeGrussa massive sulfides lenses into three fault blocks by ~350 m and ~120 m, respectively. A network of deposit-scale brittle-ductile faults splay from, and in one example are cut by, the Shiraz and Merlot faults. This results in localised ore displacement, selvage alteration and degradation of the rock mass integrity. Historically, only the Shiraz and Merlot Faults were modelled and validated during mining and grade control. The requirement for a comprehensive structural model became more relevant as mining became advanced and confining stresses on local rock mass became more complicated. The DeGrussa Structural Model has been developed to delineate areas of structural complexity and is an important tool in mitigating rockfall risk through well informed technical design. During this process, every accessible excavation was walked and structurally mapped. New workflows in Leapfrog Geo and new technology, including an app that runs on mobile phones streamlined the validation process. Drill hole orientation was a limiting factor during validation. At the time of writing this submission, the DeGrussa Structural Model consists of 34 faults, and is now an important tool for the Technical Service team when developing mine plans and schedules. Applied structural geology is often seen as exclusive to those with a PhD in the field. Faults at DeGrussa have been modelled and reconciled by a Mine Geologist and Geotechnical Engineer, using first principles geological characterisation. This is a simple process that demonstrates any geologist can contribute to a structural model, provided they understand the fundamentals of unbiased structural measurements and consistent record of observation

A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition.
