In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

The problem of production scheduling is sufficiently complex to negate the use of many conventional optimising techniques as there are numerous and diverse factors that must be considered when trying to produce an optimal schedule. These factors include: grade distribution, orebody geometry, production rate capacity, processing constraints and market price of the minerals amongst a variety of others. In addition it may be observed that many of these factors incorporate a degree of uncertainty and any schedule produced must inevitably consider risk as a primary consideration. The very nature of the problem has limited the use of conventional optimisers. Genetic algorithms use methods based upon evolution and natural selection to produce `optimal' solutions to complex system problems. They are extremely flexible and robust in their nature and it is these characteristics that are important in this particular problem domain. A particular strength of the genetic optimisation approach is the ability to handle the multiple and non-linear constraints that are typically encountered in mine scheduling problems. This paper concentrates on the development of a prototype application of a genetic algorithm to the problem of scheduling the output from multiple production points in an underground mining operation. In particular it.describes a system (GO-SCHED) that can be customised to handle a wide variety of underground scheduling problems. GO-SCHED, a Windows-based system, can interface with a variety of databases and spreadsheets for data input and output and provides a simple intuitive approach to the solution of the scheduling problem.

The Bungaroo Valley hosts a concealed Tertiary channel iron deposit (CID) along a 17 km stretch of its length. Bungaroo Valley is approximately 0.5 km wide upstream at its easternmost extent, and 3.5 km wide downstream where it joins the Jimmawarrada Creek. The valley follows the axial trace of an anticline that plunges gently to the southeast, and the CID infills the valley. Mineralisation extends to a depth of 230 m below the surface, and almost the entire deposit occurs below the water table. Bungaroo Valley cuts through the Buckland Hills and is bounded to the north and south by steep scarps capped with the resistant Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. Basement rocks are believed to be mostly Wittenoom Formation shales and dolomites, with Mount McRae Shale and Mount Sylvia Formation also present. Deep, localised depressions appear at the base of the CID sequence towards the north edge of the upstream section of the valley, while downstream the basal CID contact is relatively flat and shallow. In both cases the profile of the CID surface closely mirrors that of the basal contact. The localised depressions seen in the upstream basal CID contact produce significant variations in CID thickness of up to 100 m over short strike distances. This uneven palaeotopography is most likely due to eddying and waterfalls forming within the riverbed prior to CID deposition during a time when the water table was much lower than at present. It may also be associated with possible karsting in an underlying dolomite unit and subsequent syn- or post-depositional collapse of the overlying CID. The irregular basal contact of the Bungaroo CID sequence has implications for mining in terms of pit design and resource accessibility.

The distribution of platinum-group elements (pGEs) has been investigated in matte and slag samples from Waterval Smelter (Rustenburg Platinum Mines). The study showed that a strong preference of PGEs for alloy phases in matte represents a concentration mechanism that commenced in the furnace but can be considered a continuum from natural processes. Metal losses to fayalite (converter) slag occur by matte entrainment due to the mechanical capture of liquid sulphide droplets from the matte layer, and the exsolution of dissolved metal sulphide resulting from changes in the oxidation state of the slag. The latter is comparable to immiscible sulphide in basic magmas. However, the observed distribution of PGEs shows enrichment in metal phases of the matte. A mechanism is proposed whereby naked PGEs in silicate melts coalesce to form clusters which are stabilised by surface attachment of sulphur atoms. This envelope acts to 'draw the cluster into sulphide melts. Small particle melting effects permit PGE clusters to remain as liquids at magmatic and smelter temperatures.

This paper describes major events in the design, construction, camtissioning and operation of the Elura concentrator. It covers the period fran September, 1974 when laboratory testwork on drill core cotmenced to March, 1983 when the concentrator catmenced operation on run of mine ore following successful completion of initial ccnmissioning tests. The concentrator was designed to treat 1.1 million tonnes of lead-zinc-silver ore per year with a plant availability of 89 per cent. This treatment rate has been achieved for test periods.

The incidence of colliery disasters has highlighted the need for more centralised and directed coal mining safety research in Queensland, with particular impetus from explosions at Box Flat in 1972, Kianga in 1975 and Moura No 4 in 1986. Inquiries which identified the likely causes recommended measures and, research and two outcomes have been the present Mines Safety Research Advisory Committee and The Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station at Redbank, near Brisbane, dealing with all mining problems, coal and metalliferous. Already, important research into ignition and explosion and other health and safety matters has been accomplished; the Station has become an accredited testing laboratory; and international recognition has been achieved. Now the advisory, testing and research arms are soundly in place to pursue preventive investigations and be ready to provide assistance in any emergencies.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. The nickel operations at Kambalda consist of mining thin massive to disseminated Ni sulphide orebodies from 10 individual mines of variable grade.Daily sampling involves visual estimation of the grade of working faces based on geological parameters. This system of grade estimation is used as a guide for daily grade control only.Nickel metal allocation is based on an external sampling system. As all ore sources are blended at the primary crusher, only one calculated mill head grade is available. Therefore all sources are sampled prior to crushing. This system historically consisted of mechanically grab sampling ore from trucks as they passed over a weighbridge on arrival at the concentrator. Currently the system involves diverting one out of every ten trucks to its mine sample stockpile, which is crushed through the primary, secondary and tertiary crushing system fortnightly. The individual mine grades are re-combined to create a total sample grade. This is reconciled against the calculated mill head grade. The reconciliation factor is applied uniformly to all individual mine sample grades to calculate mill reconciled mine grades.

Theoretical and experimental studies have been made-to clarify the physical and chemical behavior of the tuyere combustion zone of blast furnace. Gas streamlines around this zone were visualized by the use of the two-dimensional equip- ment. Close agreement between the observed stream- lines and the calculated ones is found. The three- dimensional experimental studies have revealed that there exists a so-called dry zone in the neighbor- hood of the raceway and the trickling liquid be- haves approximately like a continuum. A kinetic model is develdped to describe the behavior of coke combustion in the tuyere zone. The model is based on the reaction kinetics, the differential balances of heat and mass, and the mechanics of gas flows. Regarding-the-axial distribution of gas composition in the tuyere zone, good agreement is obtained be- tween the model prediction and the data observed in a working furnace by the other investigators. Cal- culated results-show that the maximum consumption of coke occurs at the intermediate region of the raceway. For the blowing of oxygen-enriched or high -humidity blast, the position at which the maximum consumption of coke occurs is shifted toward the tuyere nose. Similar effect is found when the par- ticle diameter of coke in the tuyere zone is de- creased. From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gipps- land mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695kg of gold, which at 1982 prices represents a value of about $140 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subse- quent occupants of the lease produced an addit- ional 160kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tourists.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

However, mining can cause damage and pollution of the environment and therefore we must manage our resources wisely accounting for the physical, biological and social environments. Contrary to the view of some people not conversant with the facts mining has in many cases improved the environment. The San Vicente stratabound zinc-lead rhythmite deposit, Peru, is hosted in carbonates of the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic Pucara Group. These strata were deposited in a large, shallow water, carbonate platform which extended nearly continuously for 150 kilometers (north-south) in the eastern part of the Pucara basin.The distinctive sulfide-bearing rhythmites occur in three dolomite units which, from bottom to top, include the San Judas horizon with one sulfide-bearing manto; the San Vicente horizon with seven sulfide-bearing mantos including the main ore horizon; and the Alfonso horizon with three sulfide-bearing mantos. The dark gray sulfide-bearing dolostone layers range in thickness from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and contain variable amounts of carbonaceous material, pyrite, quartz, fine-grained sphalerite and galena. They are bordered on each side by selvages of yellow to red-brown coarse-grained sphalerite containing minor amounts of galena. Coarsely crystalline white or gray sparry dolomite is found between the coarse-grained sphalerite layers. Although commonly stratiform and uniform in thickness, the dark layers curve, "pinch out," coalesce, and form "islands" and "peninsulas."Mineral replacement textures, the paragenetic sequence, and presence of sparry dolomite, bitumen, intraformational breccias and isotope data support a hydrothermal replacement origin by metal-bearing solutions that deposited the ore and related minerals in space previously occupied by dolomite and evaporite minerals. The alignment of the Zn -Pb deposits, and at San Vicente the orientation of the mantos, the spatially and temporally associated igneous sills and the tourmaline-bearing sandstone support hydrothermal mineralization driven by a magmatic heat source in a tensional regime.

The BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) technique is a semiquantitative measure of cyanide extractable gold contained in a sample. A 5kg sample is leached in cyanide solution for 24 hours and gold is precipitated out of the pregnant solution using zinc and assayed by AAS. The detection limit is reported as ppb (parts per billion). Telfer is located 1300km north north-east from Perth in the Great Sandy Desert. The climate is one of hot summers with irregular rainfall and mild winters. A large portion of the area is covered by aeolian sand and seif dunes with poorly developed drainage, rare outcrop; topographic relief is a maximum of 96m. Poor outcrop and poorly developed drainage render conventional stream sediment sampling and soil geochemistry inadequate. Therefore a technique providing a minimum number of samples with maximum accuracy and sensitivity was needed. Consequently BLEG orientation surveys were conducted over the Telfer Mine area in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

The high maintenance of load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and front end loaders in hard rock affects mine planning with reduced availability and productivity. Intensive study of maintenance costs and availability of machines related to machine age and life provide the basis for planning from available operational alternatives.Derived programmes and experiences have led to the beginnings of unmanned operation and automation through reduction of manual diesel units and spreading electrification and use of radio. But electrification has obvious layout limitations. This approach to the present has resulted in better utilisation, costs and safety and the computerised monitoring and control provides continuous awareness of machine and work conditions with the promise of future improvements.

FOR some time past keen interest has been shown in both America and South Africa in the mining drill-steel problem. This interest has extended to Australian mining fields, and Australian drill users, ever desirous of increasing efficiency, are vigorously attacking the problem. The writer has recently been engaged in the investigation of the problem on two of ,the biggest mining fields in Australia, and has formed very definite conclusions concerning the causes of many drill-steel casualties. He puts these views forward in the hope that they may be of interest to, both drill manufacturers and drill users. The subject is here dealt with mainly from the aspect of the properties of the steel and the modifications of these properties whensubjected to various manipulations. It is generally admitted that the drilling machine has greatly increased in power and efficiency during recent years, and the consequence is that the machine is demanding better service from the steel. This is being impressed on the drill users by an increase in steel casualties. This fact has led many mining people to the view that the machine has developed so rapidly that the steel maker has not been able to keep pace, and that consequently the steel isfailing by fatigue 0:1; so-called crystallization. This view is rather depressing. The writer, on the other hand, is inclined to discountenance fatigue as a serious factor under good normal working conditions where the steel is carefully manufactured and supplied to the user under suitable structural and sound conditions, and has subsequently received kind treatment at the hands of the drill sharpener and the drill user.It is not reasonable to attribute failures to fatigue until it has definitely been proved that the steel is fundamentally sound and is in the best structural condition to resist the stresses it is called upon to withstand, and, this being so, that all fundamental principles of...

The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

The paper reviews some of the aerodynamic factors in the blast furnace process and outlines the areas requiring further study. Detailed discussion is given to the pressure drop in both the dry and the wet zone of the furnace and an optimum coke size is suggested for minimum pressure drop. The effect of various charging sequences on the distribution of the gas in the furnace shaft is treated and notes on stack injection included. Flow phenomena limiting blast furnace output and the influence of aerodynamics on the movement of the bed in the furnace are outlined and these include fluidisation, flooding and raceway formation. A mention is made of alkalis, sulphur, zinc, softening, and oil injection and the mixed effect in blast furnace economics of increased tuyere velocity as problems requiring further research.
