The Overall Slope Angle (OSA) of pitwalls plays a crucial role in the financial return of an open pit mine. In current practice, pitwall profiles are designed to be planar in cross-section within each rock layer, ie the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. A new slope design software, OptimalSlope, has been recently proposed to determine the geotechnically optimal profile shapes for the pitwalls of mines. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimisation problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall to be designed is maximised for an assigned stratigraphy, rock properties (unit weight and strength) and Factor of Safety. The geometry of the benches is provided as input to OptimalSlope. The results obtained so far on three mine case studies in isotropic rock masses (Utili et al, 2022; Agosti et al, 2021a, 2021b) show that optimal profiles are up to 5° steeper than their planar counterparts – ie the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS – leading to realising significant saving on waste rock and as a consequence Net Present Value increments and carbon footprint reductions. OptimalSlope algorithms have been modified to deal with anisotropic rock masses characterised by direction dependent shear strength. In the paper, the case of rock masses in banded iron formations (BIF) is tackled. A data set of anisotropic rock shear strengths typical of Western Australia is considered. The Snowden modified nonlinear model was employed to characterise the anisotropy of the rock mass shear strength. From the OptimalSlope simulations performed emerges that optimal pitwall profiles can increase significantly the Overall Slope Angle in comparison with planar profiles featured by the same Factor of Safety. LEM stability analyses of all the profiles were also performed by Rocscience Slide 2 to independently verify the FoSs of the optimal profiles obtained.

The Eyre Peninsula (EP) has been known for its iron ore for more than a century. Edward John Eyre noted the ironstone outcrop at what is now Iron Knob in the 19th century. Sir Douglas Mawson visited and reported on the geology of the lower EP in 1906, noting the widespread presence of iron stone and the likelihood of copper being associated with the iron stone. Despite this knowledge there has been only one successful iron ore mining region developed on the EP and that is Iron Knob and the Middleback Ranges which have been mined continuously since 1899. The Middleback Ranges can justly lay claim to be birth place of the Australian iron ore and steel industries.The discovery of large scale haematite resources in Western Australia meant that there was no need to seek out iron ore that needed benefi ciation. The low price of iron ore precluded further development of the EP and many other areas in Australia and overseas. This situation changed rapidly in the mid-2000s with the emergence of China as the world’s industrial power house and the soaring demand and price for many resources including iron ore. This triggered a flurry of activity across Australia and led to the rapid exploration and drives to develop the EP iron ore. A brief examination of the magnetic maps of the EP shows the wide spread presence of magnetite and associated smaller haematite deposits. A closer look reveals the magnetite deposits to vary in formation style and host rock lithology as well as being significantly altered by regional metamorphism. *This is an abstract only. The reverse cationic flotation using the starch as depressor of iron oxides is the most efficient upgrading process when is applied to the simple systems composed by hematite/magnetite and quartz. The fundamental studies performed with iron ore samples from different deposits over the world (Brazil, Russia, Mexico) confirmed the inefficiency of starch when the silica content in the concentrate is controlled by Fe/Mg-bearing minerals. The main approaches for solving these issues focused on using new collector formulations or new depressants. However, the alternative depressants tested inhibited flotation of quartz or were less efficient as iron oxide depressant. In this work, a comparison between new amidoamine collector with conventionally used etheramine and oleate collectors in the flotation of pure minerals and actual iron ore samples was performed. The electrophoretic mobility, contact angle and infrared spectroscopy measurements allowed to deduce the hindrance effect as main mechanism of selective adsorption of the amidoamine on the quartz surface compared to hematite and kaolinite. Molecular modelling studies revealed that this steric hindrance effect can be explained by the combination of the "shield" formed by the coordinating water molecules on the (001)-D2 hematite surface and the large volume of the amidoamine head group. The amidoamine tested as collector without use of a depressant showed excellent flotation selectivity allowing the total flotation of quartz from a mixture with hematite. High collector performance and selectivity were confirmed during reverse flotation of quartz using continuous flotation column (D = 500 mm; H = 4000 mm) and allowed to produce the iron concentrates with more than 60 per cent of iron from the rejected slimes samples of Vargem Grande 2 processing plant (Iron Quadrangle, MG, Brazil). The new collector allowed to develop flexible flotation flow sheets to process the iron ore with a complex gangue mineralogy and unlock the old altered tailings and slimes product as new resources

Characterization of pore pressure is critical for appropriate design of tailings dams. Furthermore, if seepage rates through tailing embankments increase unexpectedly or become uncontrolled, undesirable conditions may prevail to progress piping or internal erosion that could lead to the dam’s instability or ultimate failure. A three-dimensional seepage analysis was performed on a tailings dam using finite element method to find the rate of seepage and pore water conditions in the embankment and foundation. The results were then compared to a conventional two-dimensional seepage analysis carried out on the typical cross section of the embankment and the field data acquired from the instrumentation system. Considering the monitoring data, comparison of seepage analyses results for the two and threedimensional models, showed that the results of the conventional two-dimensional seepage analysis are significantly underestimating reality. Relying on two-dimensional seepage analyses might result in underestimation of seepage rates and impact the safe operation of tailings dams. Similarly, unrealistic prediction of pore water pressure conditions, based on simplified seepage analyses, can lead to overestimation of the rate of strength gain of material and consequently safe embankment raising rates.

A novel open stope design approach is presented that delivered improved performance in a mining area with poor ground conditions at the Olympic Dam mine. During 2019, a large open stope had an unplanned caving event resulting in the inability to extract the planned tonnes and subsequent sterilisation of nearby stopes. A design limitation was the lack of data and understanding around the alteration domain extents, the rock mass strength controls and limits, the failure modes controlling stope stability in the local area, and the use of conventional stope shapes. From the available data and failure observations, it was inferred that the dominant caving failure mode resulted from a blocky rock mass impacted by structure and alteration causing an unravelling failure mechanism. Numerical and empirical analyses were conducted to test this hypothesis and establish strength limits for design. The strength limits for the design were then used to provide a range of outcomes from which future stope design shapes such as chamfered backs could be selected. Three alternate chamfered geometries were selected to trial the innovative designs. New Celebration Gold Mine is located 35 km SE of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in the Archaean Kalgoorlie-St Ives Greenstone belt. The leases total 119 sq kms and arepart of a joint venture between Newmont Australia Ltd (as manager) and Mt Martin Gold Mines N.L. Mining commenced in August, 1986 and is now producing over 115,000 ounces of gold per annum. A variety of gold mineralisation styles with a total resource of 23.5 million tonnes at 2.19g/t are associated with shear zones at New Celebration. Gold production is co-ordinated from 7 open pits with others planned to com- mence soon. A large scale underground trial mining operation has com- menced with a decline on the hanging wall of the main producing orebody, Hampton Boulder. Millfeed produced is classified on the stockpile according to grade and metallurgical performance and blended tomaximise throughput while main- taining grade through a CIL treatment plant currently operating at 1.7 million tonnes per year.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows that since 2006 the balance of capital costs associated with mine development has become weighted greater than 75 per cent to enabling infrastructure and less than 25 per cent on process plant, equipment and machinery. The well-developed mine planning techniques including pit optimisation and scheduling and process plant design and optimisation have typically proceeded in a linear fashion from geology, mine planning, through processing, with some iterations back to the mine. Only then is attention paid to planning and costing of enabling infrastructure in any detail.Optimisation has typically involved developing cut-off grades, mine plans and schedules and ore processing that produces maximum economic ore. Infrastructure has then been sized æto suitÆ the mining and processing core business drivers.What the ABS data, together with global trends, indicates is that infrastructure can no longer be an afterthought if miners wish to achieve robust project value estimates, realistic ore to market costing and resource statements based on achievable economic cut-off grades.In addition, with such a large proportion of the costs originating from non-mining or processing activities, a mining operation can only be truly optimal if these aspects are given due consideration in the mine design stages, based on quality geometallurgical inputs so that the size and cost of enabling infrastructure is optimised to maximise project value.This paper outlines an iterative holistic approach to mining project development, which integrates the geometallurgical approach and enables infrastructure planning into project design and evaluation. The extraction of groundwater to produce gas from coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs has highlighted the opportunity for beneficial uses of groundwater in Australia. This paper presents an assessment of alternate groundwater modelling approaches that can be used for assessment of one beneficial use option, that of injection. This assessment examines the outcome of the use of different simulation methods on predictions of hydrodynamic behaviour.In this paper, a simplified hydraulic concept of a multi-aquifer system within the hypothetical injection field was used to investigate the hydrodynamic behaviour of injection into the Precipice Sandstone. Comparisons were made through the analysis of a Theis 3D analytical solution with 2D and 3D numerical solutions. The paper discusses the different solution methods and the impact of these on predictions of pressure and flux. Differences in 2D and 3D solutions result in implications if planning injection as a beneficial use of water. For example, the 2D solution resulted in faster and higher injection pressure build-up when compared to the 3D solutions. The 2D modelling could result in either plans that require higher capital expenditure for a greater number of wells in order to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure or a reduced injection rate. Meanwhile, the 3D modelling with sensitivity analysis could result in planning for lower capital expenditure for fewer wells required to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure. Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. Mineral extraction is facing the twin challenges of finite resources and increasing environmental and economic costs. Society’s growth is matched by an increase in demand for the earth’s resources. It is incumbent on us as contemporary mining professionals to promote and facilitate ethical and efficient practices. Technological developments have and will continue to allow a decrease in viable cut-off grades, creating new economic opportunities from deposits that were previously uneconomic. Mining low-grade deposits however, even with perfect recoveries, will have a significant environmental cost for the metal won. The greatest opportunity to increase metal with the least environmental cost is to increase the metal yield from existing mines. The determination of mining polygons is a critical juncture where rock is typically subjected to the binary grading of either ore or waste. This is undertaken using a number of factors, such as the mining equipment being used and the recovery in the processing plant. Traditionally, mining polygons were generated on the in situ grade control model. This ignores the complex differential blast dynamics that occur during blasting. Two opportunities exist to improve metal yields: optimise the blast design to achieve the post-blast muck pile that will support the greatest outcome; and generate optimised polygons on the post-blast muck pile. A data set from a Canadian Gold deposit is used to demonstrate the potential benefit of iterative blast movement modelling and grade control polygon optimisation on metal yield. The impact of blasting on the total recoverable metal is presented, highlighting blast design as a critical process in the mining value chain.

Prior to mine development, exploration drilling within the Luise Caldera on Niolam Island encountered gold mineralisation to the northwest of the main Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. This mineralisation was referred to as the Kapit orebody, and ten diamond drill holes were subsequently completed over the area to investigate its economic potential. Several significant mineralised intercepts were returned. These were interpreted using the orebody model developed for Lihir at that time which invoked a strong horizontal control to mineralisation. Additional consideration was given to the elevated geothermal temperatures encountered, the proximity of the mineralisation to the ocean, and its perceived depth below sea level, resulting in the Kapit area being given a low priority for follow up investigation. As a result, no further work was completed over Kapit until recently. The Kapit orebody was the target of an intense diamond drilling programme during 2002/2003. Data from this latest round of drilling has significantly improved understanding of the mineralisation and associated geology. The significant orebody now delineated at Kapit substantially differs from past interpretations, and the latest data has upgraded its economic potential. A resource estimate and other critical studies completed in 2003 enabled an updated reserve statement to be issued in February 2004 including the Kapit mineralisation for the first time. Total Probable Reserves at Kapit stand at 25.2 million tonnes (Mt) at 5.28 grams of gold per tonne (g Au/t), for a total of 4.3 million ounces (Moz) of contained gold.

"The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is a $650 M infrastructure project that will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs while also helping to protect the Merri and Moonee Ponds creeks by significantly reducing the number of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rainfall. The NSP consists of two stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation, and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned by Yarra Valley Water and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation.Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was used on both NSP stages, however, since Stage 1’s schedule for installation of GRP was slightly ahead of Stage 2’s, this paper will only focus on Stage 1’s use of GRP.NSP1 involves the construction of 7.9 km of new sewer tunnel ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 m, five main access shafts at depths of up to 65 m, and connections to the existing sewerage system including several access manholes. Construction began in 2007, and project completion is expected in 2012.The original design for NSP1 specified the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE-) line precast concrete pipes as the final tunnel lining and HDPE-lined reinforced concrete for the access shafts and manholes. During construction, the rising cost of precast concrete pipes and the introduction of an additional GRP pipe supplier in the market justified a review of the tunnel final lining material. The contractor-proposed GRP pipe alternative was accepted for the final tunnel lining based on time and cost savings that were possible without compromising the design intent. After gaining experience with GRP through this design change, Melbourne Water Corporation reviewed and accepted GRP as the final lining for five smaller connection manholes. The use of GRP for the manholes was particularly inventive as the redesign made use of the approved tunnel GRP pipes as both a structural and corrosion-resistant lining.This paper discusses the use of GRP on NSP1; how the change in material, from concrete to GRP, affected the design philosophies assumed during detailed design; and how construction methods were modified to handle the less rigid GRP material. Details on the structural, hydraulic and durability considerations for the design are included, as are details about the time and cost savings and the quality and safety improvements that were achieved during construction.

Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015. The establishment of the Imperial Smelting Furnace at Sulphide Coporation Pty. Limited for the smelting of zinc and lead made it necessary to design and install sintering capacity to produce approximately 500 t.p.d. of zinc-lead sinter. The updraught sintering process installed is a recent development and the plant was designed with adequate flexibility and equipment to enable operating staff to investigate the process and achieve maximum production under optimum operating conditions.Sulphur dioxide gases from the sinter machine are passed to a contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.

The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will comprise 2.5 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels and 900 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The hydrogeology of the area is complex with perched aquifers in compressible soils, cascading water levels in fractured rock aquifers, and discontinuous higher permeability units resulting in artesian water levels and groundwater springs.Numerical groundwater modelling was undertaken to assess the potential effects of tunnel construction and long-term operation on the groundwater system; the magnitude and extent of changes in groundwater level and the resulting potential for settlement, buoyancy effects, contaminant migration and adverse effects on creek base flow. Modelling also provides inputs to tunnel design such as groundwater seepage volumes and water pressures.The driven tunnel will be ‘undrained’ long-term so potential effects on the groundwater system are limited to short-term dewatering during construction. Significant project time and cost savings can be made if the portal areas are permanently ‘drained’, but this means potential effects are greatest in the long term condition.This paper summarises the investigations, implications of the complex hydrogeological setting on tunnel design and environmental assessments, and groundwater modelling undertaken during the planning stage of this project. The groundwater modelling has been used to incorporate mitigation options in tunnel design and construction sequencing; a comprehensive monitoring program will be used to trigger appropriate responses should effects differ from those predicted.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick GoldÆs autoclaves /carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility at Goldstrike, a study was made to evaluate the use of surfactants for reducing the loss of gold during cyanide leaching of preg-robbing gold ores. Consistent improvement of gold recovery was observed with surfactants at various testing conditions. Carrapateena is a new underground sublevel cave mine and was officially opened in 2020. It has a mine life of 20 years. Development began in 2016, and with the rare opportunity to start a with a blank canvas and having a long mine life, an effort was made to explore how to incorporate innovative and leading-edge technologies. The Ventilation on Demand (VoD) system was designed with the objective to optimise power consumption and ventilation delivery through the primary and secondary ventilation systems. Primary fans controlled by Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and dualwinding secondary fans with multiple setpoints control the delivery of overall quantity. Automated butterfly dampeners control the regulation of air to individual production crosscuts, and automated louvres control the exhaust quantities from the mining levels. Ultra-sonic flow sensors are installed to measure air quantity and environmental stations are installed to measure air quality. Both are designed to play a key role in control and calibration of the system. It was quickly identified that no one vendor could provide a holistic solution to meet the design requirements. A strategy was derived to use multiple vendors, harnessing the specific strengths of each. A control system has been developed to allow the Site Operations Control Centre (SOCC) to oversee and control real-time delivery of ventilation as required by operations. The first full level installation of the VoD system was completed in September 2020.
