The Thalanga massive sulphide deposit is hosted by Upper Cambrian rhyolites and volcaniclastics of the Mt. Windsor Volcanics near their contact with overlying dacites, rhyolites and sediments of the Trooper Creek Formation. The ores and host rocks have been subjected to a single strong deformation and to lower to middle greenschist facies metamorphism. A main lens with surface gossan dimensions of 55U m x 6 m dips steeply, plunges shallowly to the west and is offset by a series of normal faults. It is flanked by smaller lenses to the east where the mineralized horizon is stopea out by granite. The area to the east and south of the gossan is masked by Tertiary cover. A complex exhalite package is represented by banded sphalerite-pyrite- galena-chalcopyrite, massive pyrite and chalcopyrite and assemblages dominated by dolomite, chlorite-actinolite, tremolite, talc, barite and rare gypsum. Accessory tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, bismuthinite, magnetite and native gold are associated locally. Pods of quartz-magnetite formed distally. The ores are underlain by strongly to moderately pyrite-silica-sericite altered rhyolites with the strongest alteration closest to an interred synvolcanic fault. This alteration is characterised by an enrichment in MgO, Na2O, FeS2 and base metals with a depletion in CaO and Na2O. There is a general enrichment in Pb and Zn towards the hanging wall with some enrichment of Cu near the base of the main lens due to replacement by ore tiuias near vent discharge sites. This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.

A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

Production from the narrow, high grade silver-lead-zinc orebodies below 15 level commenced in mid 1985.Geological, mining research and recent mining experience determined that a mechanised drill, fire and muck cycle would be the most suitable method.Ground conditions are predicted to be worse than in other cut and fill (MICAF) areas at Isa Mine, owing to the increased depth, more variable dip of the orebodies and the increased effect of major geological structures.Mechanised ground support and tight filling techniques feature in controlling these expected adverse ground conditions.

The Ravensworth-Liddell area is part of the Muswellbrook- Singleton Coal District of the Northern Coalfield. It lies in the Parishes of Liddell, Ravensworth, Vane and Howick, in the County of Durham, midway between Singleton and Muswellbrook, and is traversed by the Great Northern Railway, and the New England Highway.Ravensworth and Liddell railway stations are 57 miles arid 61 miles, respectively, north from Newcastle (Fig. 1).The area has been the centre of an intensive search for open cut coal during the past few years. More than 1,200 bores, of which about 10% were cored diamond drill holes, were drilled to depths of about 200ft. Portions with thicker cover have been explored by 10 diamond drill holes to depths of over 400ft. but core recovery from these deeper holes was poor, and the lack of detail in the recorded logs limits geological interpretation. The drilling has proved about 34,000,000 tons of open cut coal, and about 246,000,000 tons under deeper cover.GEOLOGYThe Ravensworth-Liddell area lies on the eastern flank and southern extremity of the Muswellbrook Dome, extending from Hebden in the north, to Jerry's Plains in the south, and the rocks under consideration belong to the Tomago Stage of the Upper Coal Measures. The sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft being mainly concerned with providing for the continuation of mining operations north of the existing workings, requirements for the shaft and haulage equipment were assessed, having in mind the anticipated needs of the Company in future years, the .available knowledge and probable future trends of the orebody, and also that the shaft would be required to act as a downcast airway for the ventilation system associated with the northern underground workings.

Atlas Copco is one of the worldÆs leading providers of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2009). Furthermore, the company spans 160 markets and held 34 000 employees at the end of 2008. The company is organised under three ætechniquesÆ whereby the Construction and Mining TechniqueÆs business division is located within +rebro, Sweden. This paper is aimed at briefly facilitating information on how the company and more specifically, the Construction and Mining Technique is run. Also, by sharing my experiences, this paper is intended to encourage and motivate students currently studying for a degree relevant to the minerals industry, to apply for this extremely beneficial scholarship. Through a number of presentations relating to the various divisions, products and aftermarket services of the company, I came to realise that Atlas Copco extends beyond simply selling equipment suitable for the mining and civil industries. This tour through Sweden also contained highlights of visiting the Underground Rock Excavation factory, Surface Drilling Equipment factory and Secoroc divisions. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a tour of the LKAB mine in Kiruna. In addition, time was allocated to less industry related activities, and I was able to go dog sledging, sip vodka cocktails out of ice glasses at the Ice Hotel and enjoy traditional Swedish foods of moose and reindeer. Most important and memorable to me; however, was the ability for employees of Atlas Copco to speak of the company and their products with such passion and enthusiasm, which truly made this a motivational and unforgettable experience.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

An innovative separator known as the HydroFloat cell has been developed specifically for the upgrading of coarse particles that are difficult to recover using conventional flotation cells. The novel characteristic of this separator is the formation of a hindered teeter-bed of fluidised solids into which small air bubbles are injected. The air bubbles selectively attach to hydrophobic particles and form particle/bubble agglomerates that segregate atop the teeter-bed due to their lower apparent specific gravity. The low-density agglomerates are eventually carried into the product overflow launder by the rising current of teeter water. Hydrophilic particles remain in the teeter-bed and are discharged to underflow as a high solids content tailing. Benefits of this hybrid flotation-density separator include enhanced bubble-particle contacting, increased particle residence time, and very low air demand. Test data indicate that significant improvements in the recovery of coarse particles can be achieved using this innovative technology. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the HydroFloat cell and provides an overview of recent pilot-scale tests conducted for the phosphate industry.

The Resource Management Act has been in force now for approximately ten months. This Act, and the Crown Minerals Act which accompanied it, have substantially changed the manner by which mining operations and other resource uses obtain access to resources and are subject to controls of their environmental effects. This paper briefly summarises the key elements of the regulatory provisions of the Resource Management Act. It identifies the types of resource consents required, and discusses these and procedural matters in relation to mining in Otago. It addresses the transitional provisions and highlights inconsistencies and difficulties in the implementation of these provisions. This paper identifies potential future developments in the planning and regulatory environment relating to mining in Otago.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

Maximising margins in today's competitive international commodity markets demands superior productivity. This requires more than simply selecting the best equipment. It requires efficient production and commercial processes together with management systems recognised as international best practice. This paper introduces an integrated way of working that includes management systems for successfully changing work practices and attitudes, developing managers and increasing accountability. It provides an improvement methodology that includes systematic involvement of people in true continuous improvement of processes for maximising productivity and safety while minimising costs. Even though the principles are proven in all industry sectors worldwide, they are not always used correctly. This paper provides examples of traditional performance measurement systems to show how managers miss opportunities to control and improve both production and supporting service processes. It also describes the basic methodology for correct use of the principles and provides examples of correct implementation of modem systems in mining. The charts from actual mining case studies will be elaborated upon in the conference presentation. This paper's main aim is to provide background material for the presentation by introducing integrated principles for building best practice management systems for superior productivity and safety - for higher margins.

Burra was the largest metalliferous mine in Aus- tralia between 1845 and 1860 and employed as many as 1000 men and boys. The workforce was predominantly Cornish, Burra being the first con- centration of Cornish folk in Australia. The sur- face and underground mining operations were typically Cornish and virtually all positions of responsibility were held by Cornishmen. Beam pumping and winding engines were imported from Cornwall and housed in traditional Cornish engi- nehouses. Burra had the first significant number of beam engines in Australia: six were installed between 1849 and 1861. These engines, ranging in size from 20 inches to 80 inches in diameter, were used for pumping, hauling, and driving Cornish roll crush- ers and dressing machinery. Derelict enginehouses of the great beam engines are a striking reminder of former mining activity in Cornwall and South Australia. In South Aus- tralia about 35 enginehouses were erected between 1848 and 1887, of which eight still remain, three of them at Burra (Figure 1). These remain as a tangible link with the Industrial Revolution.

A production information management system (PIMS) was recently implemented at Queensland NickelÆs Yabulu Refinery. Although a strong business case was developed to justify the significant investment in PIMS some potential beneficiaries remained sceptical of the anticipated benefits. The decision to install PIMS was justified as the on-line availability of continuous production data enabled the optimisation of some crucial operations resulting in significant cost savings, improved throughput and final product quality. Furthermore the rapid access to extended historical data has allowed the cause of repeated failure of equipment to be determined. The investment is expected to pay for itself within two years and has already contributed towards significant savings. This paper focuses on some of the diverse production improvements gained and compares the anticipated benefits in the business case to those achieved. A brief outline of the phased implementation of the OSIsoft PI data historian and complementary client software at Yabulu is included, along with details of the lessons learned.

Atlas Copco is a leading provider of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2007) and one of the worldÆs largest suppliers of rock drilling equipment. The business division of Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique is based in +rebro, Sweden with the majority of their equipment produced in a number of facilities within the area. As part of the 2006 AusIMM/Atlas Copco Scholarship I was fortunate enough to visit these facilities to experience first hand this truly unique global company. Through numerous presentations on the various divisions and products manufactured by the company, I saw the broad range of products and services offered by the company and came to realise it is much more than just selling drills. Other highlights included a brief love affair, a tour of EuropeÆs largest underground mine (or factory depending who you ask), a drink at the ice bar at the ice hotel in JukkasjSrvi, and a number of dinners of reindeer. Overall this it was a truly amazing experience with all involved with the program going out of their way to ensure I got the most out of the trip. More importantly, through no effort at all, everyone naturally conveyed their passion for the industry and the company which is a great credit to the æAtlas Copco WayÆ thereby creating a company æcommitted to your superior productivity through interaction and innovationÆ.

The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

PART 1The quantity of dust present and the methods used for suppression of dust in metalliferous mines has, in recent years, received considerable attention from mining engmeers in various parts of the world. Shortly after the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, in 1916, the officers of the Broken Hill South Limited started investigations into the conditions of the dustiness of the air in the underground workings. As the methods used are not generally known in Australia, the writers are of the opinion that the present is an opportune time to place them before members of the Institute. A large amount of the subject matter of this paper has been drawn from the 1916 and 1919 reports of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, the paper of Mr. Innes published in "The Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Mrica"; also various articles appearing in the Journal of Industrial Hygiene, and the American Journal of Public Health. A great deal of research work into the cause, prevention and estimation of mine dust has been made by the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa, and officials of the United States Bureau of Mines. The writers considered it advisable to begin the investigation at the South Mine with apparatus and methods developed by the South African Committee.Through the Australian agent of the Cape Explosives Company, inquiries were made preliminary to procuring the necessary apparatus for the determination of dust, from South Africa. The writers then learned that the older gravimetric method used by the Phthisis Prevention Committee was likely to be superseded by the konimeter...
