By 2025, with the widespread industry adoption of remote operation centres and advanced analytics, mining companies will find themselves making better, more informed decisions across the value chain. Process automation will drive significant business integration and reorganisation. Better collaboration between functions will make cross value chain optimisation a reality. Wherever possible decisions will be automated, based on analytical models and embedded in an enterprise decision management (EDM) architecture. This will take care of many of the minor day-to-day or the minute-to-minute decisions that consume operators and managers today. More flexible information technologies and architectures derived from the extensions to Web 2.0 and service oriented architecture (SOA) will solve many of the integration issues of today. The ongoing business imperatives for doing more with less people will make true collaboration with partners such as mining contractors, equipment vendors, transport providers, suppliers and maintenance contractors commonplace throughout the industry. All these organisations will be linked in and share common goals and objectives in real-time while providing visibility of internal constraints and available capability, allowing optimised decisions to be made across the extended enterprise. Humans will increasingly move to a more supervisory role and will use advanced collaboration to quickly solve complex abnormal issues that span the value chain out to the extended enterprise. The open collaboration and communication models instilled in the workforce through the widespread use of social networking technologies will drive thought leadership far beyond current æbest practiceÆ thinking. This will encourage the mining industry to extract the business value from rapidly converging fields of study such as environmental sciences, neuroscience, psychology, engineering, information technology and business finance. The future of mining will see a more uniform distribution of data savvy workers between the ages of 20 - 40, forcing a change in current operations. This group will drive the adoption of ubiquitous computing, augmented reality, presence and digital labelling. The enterprise will shift from a relatively static disparate set of functions to a digitally aware, integrated and interactive environment with information available, in context and just in time, to those who need it. The networked virtual enterprise will therefore be a reality.

The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

The Manto Verde mine is found in the coastal ranges of the Atacama desert, 1000 km north of Santiago, Chile . The deposit is a fault-breccia specularite-oxide copper mineralisation hosted by the Jurassic andesites of La Negra Formation. It is located in a tensional fault that joins twoparallel arms of the Atacama Fault. The mine is in feasibility study: reserves are of the order of 60 Mt at 0.9 wt per cent soluble copper; mining will be undertaken at a rate of 11 000 tpd utilising an open pit and the ore will be heap-leached with acidified sea water, with copper recovery and by SX/EW.

Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. The classification of Mineral Resource estimates for reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process. These statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource which must also take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation. Several authors, including Jackson et al (2003) and Dominy, Noppe and Annels (2004), have addressed methods of including consideration of geological data and its reliability into the classification process. Henry and Parker (2005) have discussed a quantitative measure for classification of Measured and Indicated Resources related to mine production parcels. These methods rely on the availability of sufficient information for the application of geostatistics, data evaluation techniques or repeated interpretation of data to provide an indication of confidence. They are suitable for very advanced projects. In 2005, using a modification of the financial audit æcontrol and quality criteriaÆ principles, then widely accepted within Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest), the principal author developed a scheme which categorised the classified resources into æcontrolÆ and æqualityÆ (or risk) categories. Control covers all aspects of the data collection, the geological interpretation, the data analysis and the modelling of tonnage and grade; it is also influenced by the documentation of the estimate. The quality criteria are a subjective measure of risk associated with the estimation of the resource and refer to the risk that the tonnage and grade are not realised and the consequences if decisions are made on the basis of these estimates. By evaluating the generally accepted level of risk attributed to these quality ratings by Competent Persons within Newcrest, a graphical representation of the confidence in the resource ounces was prepared for communication of the expected confidence in the resource statement.

The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012. The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.

In August 2001 the Minister for Conservation declined an application by GRD Macraes for an access arrangement to enable work at the Globe Progress Mine near Reefton. In her decision, Ms Lee said:æI have considered whether potential compensation and the proposed safeguards against some of the adverse effects are sufficient to outweigh my concerns as to the loss of conservation values, consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held by the Crown and, to a lesser extent, the North Westland Regional Management Plan. I do not think they are sufficient. To my mind, my concerns as to the consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held and the loss of some conservation values in particular, outweigh any potential compensation and possible mitigation of adverse effects.Æ Commenting on the MinisterÆs decision Guy Salmon of the Ecological Foundation stated that the Minister should have invited the applicant to provide a 10 000 hectare pest-free wildlife sanctuary as part of the æpriceÆ for obtaining that access. However,æfor many people of green persuasion, it has become fashionable to say no every timeàthose who really have the well-being of the environment at heart, will want to look carefully at the bigger picture of environmental restoration needsàThe deciding criterion: the mining company should show that its involvement on conservation land would produce a net conservation gain. That is a criterion that creates the right incentives for win-win-win solutions on conservation land.ÆThis paper considers whether the concept of off site mitigation is one which fits within the current legal regime. Two questions arise:Can such mitigation/compensation be legally considered in access arrangements or required as a condition of resource consents? Is this a realistic option for industry to be pursuing?

Oceana Gold (NZ) LtdÆs, Macraes Gold Operation currently has two tailings impoundments, the larger of which covers approximately 75 ha. When an impoundment is temporarily out of use, the surface dries and dust can be blown from the surface to the surrounding area. At present water spraying is used to stabilise the surface, but this is not ideal as Macraes mine can experience water shortages during the summer. This paper examines an alternative method of surface stabilisation using vegetation as a ground cover. The tailings have a low natural fertility, so it is important to determine what will actually grow in the tailings, and whether amendments are necessary. Also important is the effect of the amendments on arsenic mobility in the tailings as the schist rock at Macraes has naturally elevated levels of arsenic. Three plants species, rye corn, barley, and lupin, were grown in metre-deep lysimeters at Macraes mine site. The plants were grown in unaltered tailings, and tailings with one of two amendments added: Bioboost (an organic fertiliser containing biosolids), and superphosphate fertiliser. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected and analysed monthly to determine the extent of arsenic mobility. In addition, laboratory experiments were set up to determine arsenic mobility in tailings with amendments at the centimetre scale.   All plants grew best with the fertiliser amendment, with rye corn growing the best overall. Plants growing in unaltered tailings either barely survived (rye corn, barley) or died (lupin). Plants in the Bioboost amended tailings grew only slightly better than in the unamended tailings. Laboratory experiments indicate that the addition of phosphate fertiliser greatly increases arsenic leaching at the centimetre scale when compared to unamended tailings. The addition of Bioboost only marginally increases arsenic leaching, compared to unamended tailings. This trend has not been repeated in the lysimeter trials on the metre scale over four months. Current results suggest that of the plant types trialed and amendments used, rye corn with superphosphate is the most practical short-term tailings stabilisation method at Macraes.

Gold Fields Australia (Gold Fields) has identified that improving productivity through more detailed shift planning and operational control of mining activities is a key driver to the success of their business. The Hamlet mine was chosen as a pilot site to trial a system that would allow production engineers and shift bosses to align the execution of short-term activities with the longer-term goals of the organisation.Gold Fields partnered with Deswik to introduce an on-site, collaborative, web-based system to allow mine planners to quickly build-up a detailed, activity-based, shift schedule for the coming week from the 13-week plan. Multiple stakeholders could then review and alter the plan, and then track and manage the execution of the activities.The system is designed to be integrated with production data capture systems to allow tracking of progress towards completion for each activity, as well as to plan and monitor the equipment operating in the mine. Integration of systems allowed engineers to use the large quantities of production data being captured to make informed decisions in the operations environment.The system replaced a complex set of spreadsheets that required expert users in Gold Fields to maintain. By capturing the data in a central database, the planning process is transparent and historic data from the execution of activities is available for analysis to improve productivity in the future.The system has ensured that the highest priority and critical path activities for the business are completed at the right time, improving the efficiency of operations.CITATION:Deucker, E and White, A, 2017. Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

Sustainable development is a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The topic is necessarily broad and complex, covering an entire spectrum of related areas, from geology to end-use products. The objective of this keynote address is to focus on the chemicals and chemistry aspects - especially research and technology transfer - in sustainable mineral processing. Chemicals came to play a critical role in mineral processing during the last century, and they will play an equally vital role in confronting the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, particularly in the areas of greener chemicals, water efficiency and water resource management; waste reduction and remediation; minimising environmental impact, safety and health risks (meeting and exceeding the requirements of regulations); energy efficiency; and converting mineral resources into reserves. This keynote address argues that the current research framework is no longer adequate to serve the goals of sustainable mineral processing. The problems studied are often too narrowly defined or irrelevant, while the research efforts are fragmented and the methods and approach employed are often too reductionistic to produce useful knowledge. A new framework for research is needed. This address further argues that a new framework based on a holistic or systems approach can best tackle the challenges of sustainable mineral processing. Central tenets of this approach include a recognition that, in complex systems, the behaviour of the whole system is more than the sum of the individual contributions, and that interactions occur in real time, often in subtle and complex ways. The focus is thus on the behaviour of the whole system. Indeed, a comprehensive understanding of the system through large-scale measurements should precede a study of parts or of idealised models of the complex system. The result will be a sound knowledgebase, better solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, and improved technology transfer. Developing such a framework will pose a formidable challenge, requiring significant time and effort as well as a confluence of diverse specialties and strategic collaboration. Fortunately, recent developments in the context of reagent optimisation provide us with a prototype of a holistic approach. We can also draw upon methodological innovations in the biological sciences, where the critical need for a systems approach is well recognised and significant advances have been made.

A survey of selected West Coast Streams was undertaken in Summer 2001, Summer 2002 and Winter 2002 to establish the degree of arsenic (As) contamination in waters and sediments downstream of old coal and gold mine workings on the West Coast. Of the catchments studied, Soldiers/Ford Creek and Rapid Stream showed the most significant elevated As concentrations, predominantly in dissolved form, and evidence of AMD or ARD contamination (high sulfate concentrations and/or acidity). The rate and processes of removal of dissolved arsenic from the water column (attenuation) have been studied in these catchments. The Rapid Stream and Soldiers/Ford Creek catchments are directly affected by adit drainage from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Both catchments have high As concentrations in the sediments, with up to 770 mg/kg in Soldiers Creek and 490 mg/kg in Rapid Stream. Dissolved As concentrations are significantly elevated in the neutral pH waters of Soldiers Creek; typically as high as 100 - 200 ¦g/kg, up to 500 m downstream of the main adit discharge (800 ¦g/kg As). Adit inflows to Rapid Stream were acidic and contained 20 - 30 ¦g/kg dissolved As, with relatively high concentrations of arsenic in the stream water in winter (up to 18 ¦g/kg), but not in summer. Analysis of concentration trends and As:SO4 ratios downstream of these obvious As sources confirmed that dissolved As had been actively removed from the water column, but varied seasonally with greater removal evident in summer. Adsorption of arsenic onto iron oxide in the stream sediments is the most likely mechanism of removal. The Snowy River catchment, on the other hand, has relatively high As concentrations in both the sediments and the water column, but there was little evidence of a distinct AMD or ARD input from the Blackwater gold mining area. Preliminary investigation suggests that dilution rather than attenuation is responsible for decreasing As concentrations downstream.

The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.

Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.
