The work to be described is part of a comprehensive research on the influence of impurities on the properties of lead. The author had previously compared an electrolytic lead containing less than 0.002% total impurities with a commercial lead containing 0.008% impurities (excluding oxygen) and had shown that the former recrystallised more readily than the latter under the same conditions of cold work and annealing. This difference in properties was attributed to the difference in purity. Electrolytic lead containing only 0.0005% total impurities has been prepared and cast in vacuo. Some interesting effects have been obtained by working and annealing this lead, and by adding silver to it. The preparation of this lead, and the effects obtained thereon, are described in this paper. Mine to Mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian Mining Industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in NorthernQueensland, Australia, has espoused the Mine-to-Mill concept and isactively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROMstockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken betweenErnest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives tooptimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance ofindividual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimisefragmentation or the downstream processes. These include suchspecialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, andPOWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As importantare the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers,measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and ahigh-speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design - only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as theunderstanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting inreduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.

Zircon producers are often required to lower impurity levels to meet customer specifications as most of these impurities adversely effect the end use. For example, zircon sand in foundry applications needs to be free of any surface impurities (eg clay, gibbsite and goethite) which otherwise could cause sintering or fusion between cast metal and the zircon mould. Light coloured ceramic grade zircon, typically low in iron oxides and titania, is preferred in ceramics applications. The presence of impurities in zircon sands is a problem in the magnetic and electrostatic separation stages of their concentration. Previous work (Aral et al, 1997) showed that impurities in zircon sand concentrates occurred in the form of stains on grain surfaces, discrete gangue minerals and in the mineral grains. The gangue minerals such as rutile, garnet, xenotime, monazite, spinels, ilmenite, and aluminium silicates in the concentrate in some cases (Aral et al, 1997) contribute significantly to the impurity content of the concentrate. A careful hand picking of the impurity grains from a Western Australian zircon sand showed that the impurity content of the concentrate could be lowered significantly as a result of the removal of the surface stained grains and gangue minerals. The hand-picked ædirtyÆ fraction, comprised about eight per cent by weight of the concentrate, and consisted mostly of iron-oxide/hydroxide-stained zircon, silica grains and rutile, and occasionally ilmenite, monazite, gahnite and other (unidentified) coloured grains. The chemical analysis of the remaining æcleanÆ fraction showed that the major impurities (Fe and Ti) were reduced significantly (Table 1). The reduction in the uranium content was about 30 per cent. The other measured impurities, P, Mg, Al, Th, and Ca remained mostly unchanged as shown in Table 1. The contribution of ilmenite to the overall iron content of æcleanÆ zircon was insignificant as it comprised about 0.1 per cent weight of the æcleanÆ zircon. Rutile was the major source of titanium contamination (about one per cent by weight). Recent work (Aral and Calle, 1999) on zircon sand concentrates from the Murray Basin showed that, under the electron microprobe, the bulk of the impurities occurred in the dark back scattered electron (BSE) regions of the zoned zircon grains. The impurity contents of the light BSE regions and unblemished (unzoned) grains were low. The impurity content in zoned zircons has been investigated on single, relatively large, crystals (McLaren, Gerald and Williams, 1994; Smith et al, 1991; Romans, Brown and White, 1975). These studies generally aimed to investigate the incorporation of U in zircon as zircon is used extensively for U-Pb geochronology owing to its relatively high content of uranium. Smith et al (1991) identified a striking difference in composition between the areas of lower (dark BSE) and higher (light BSE) average atomic number in the zoned zircon. Their work showed in particular that the zones of lower atomic numbers contained very significant amounts of trace metals such as Y, REE, Nb, U, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba and, by difference H2O. In this paper the impurity distribution in zoned zircon grains was investigated on statistically significant number of grains before and after a leach treatment. The distribution of impurities was also measured in unblemished areas to compare the results.

Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

The Peko copper orebody is associated with a body of magnetite rock which it has partly replaced. The primary ore averages about 9 per cent. copper and 4 dwt. gold per ton and locally IS much richer. It consists essentially of chalcopyrite and unreplaced magnetite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite, bismuthinite, native bismuth and native gold. The earliest formed mineral is wolfram, and the latest formed is goethite, so that the temperature of deposition ranged from about 5000 C. to 1650 C. or lower.Oxidation extends to 270 ft., which is 100 ft. below the present water level. The oxidized ore consists of cuprite and native copper, and has replaced more or less massive chalcocite of a former zone of secondary sulphide enrichment. The present zone of secondary sulphide enrichment extends from about 270 ft. to 310 ft. depth.INTRODUCTIONThe Peko mine is about 6 miles south-west of Tennant Creek township in the Northern Territory, adjacent to a small outcrop of hematite rock that projects above an otherwise featureless "bull-dust" fiat.The copper-gold orebody being developed in this mine did not outcrop. It was first detected in 1950 by a surface diamond-drill hole (DDH.1), which intersected primary copper ore at a depth of 400 to 425 ft. This ore contained from 4 to 11 per cent. copper and 1 to 25 dwt. gold per ton. Since then a shaft has been sunk, and crosscuts and development drives have been opened on the 210..ft., 300-ft. and 400-ft. levels, which are also connected by winzes. Two diamond drill holes sunk from the 400-ft. level have intersected theorebody at about 450 to 460 ft., and a winze from the 400-ft. level intersected the lode from 445 to 500 ft. At this point it is 54 ft. wide, and averages 9 per cent. copper. More recently an inclined surface drill hole (Peko No. 1) has cut the lode at 856 ft. to 921 ft., equivalent to a vertical depth...

Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

Separation of Iron Particles from Banded Haematite Quartzite (BHQ) Ore by Selective Magnetic Coating The separation of fine iron particles from banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) has been studied using selective magnetic coating. The BHQ ore assays as 38.9 per cent Fe, 42.5 per cent SiO2 and 1.0 per cent Al2O3. Mineralogically, the ore contains hematite and quartz as the major mineral phases where as goethite and magnetite is present in minor entities. Natural magnetite of very fine size and oleate-magnetite in colloidal form, prepared synthetically in the laboratory are used as the coating material on the surface of hematite particles. The selective coatings of oleate-magnetite on BHQ surfaces followed by magnetic separation studies have indicated that, it is possible to achieve 62.3 per cent Fe with 8.5 per cent SiO2 at 85.4 per cent iron recovery. The recovery of iron values is found to be superior in comparison to the conventional magnetic separation techniques. The selectivity of coating for enhancing the magnetic response of iron particles is achieved by controlling the surface properties of the particle via electrokinetic potential adjustment by controling pH and addition of oleate-magnetite. In the separation process, the effects of pH, magnetic intensity and addition of oleate-magnetite are studied to achieve the maximum grade and recovery of iron values. The optimum separation is observed at pH of 7.5, oleate-magnetite concentration of 0.25 ml/g of BHQ ore and a magnetic intensity of around 0.8 Tesla. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infra-red spectroscopy (IR) and UV-visible spectroscopic studies strongly suggest preferential coating of magnetite on hematite surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies have brought out the semi-quantitative features of BHQ ore. The recovery of iron values from a lean grade ore such as BHQ is carried out looking into the future needs of this ore in India for iron and steel making.

The objective of the draw strategy in a caving mine is to maximise economic return by minimising waste dilution3 and maximising ore recovery4. The draw strategy must also include suitable controls for air blast and mud rush hazards and is highly constrained until continuous cave propagation has been achieved. This paper details a three-year project at the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), which used cave flow simulation software to develop a draw strategy that increased the mine value by 32 per cent.Dilution and ore loss can be significant in sublevel cave (SLC) operations and result in poor recovery and considerable economic losses. To minimise dilution and ore loss, cellular automata software was used to simulate cave flow over the mine life. The optimisation project required mining footprints for various cut-off grades to be developed. Draw strategies for each mine footprint were then generated using a range of shut-off grades. Economic assessment of each scenario was then conducted to determine the mine footprint and corresponding draw strategy that generated the highest NPV (net present value). The iterative simulation process was improved by developing automated software functions in the flow modelling software to reduce time taken to generate and assess life-of-mine (LOM) draw strategy scenarios.In addition to improving the NPV of the mine, the optimisation project also enabled a decrease in the mine cut-off grade which increased the ore reserve and extended the mine life. Overall, an iterative process of mine planning, cave simulation, economic evaluation and geotechnical analysis was used to significantly increase the economic return of the SLC whilst ensuring caving risks were controlled to an acceptable level.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2016. The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. Obviously this treatment cannot be regarded as a cure for silicosis, since it cannot restore lung tissue which has undergone fibrotic change; but Crombie and his colleagues believe that the inhalation of finely particulate aluminum powder offers every prospect of preventing the development of human silicosis.In view of these findings, it is surprising that repeated papers by Goralewski from Germany describe various types of lung disease attributed to aluminum dust, and press for them to be scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act in that country. Seven hundred workers were investigated. They were making, probably by a stamping process, aluminium powder containing about four milliards of particles of dust per grain, and are reported as complaining of dry cough with pain on breathing, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and gnawing abdominal pain. Most important aspects of mixing have resulted from the study of Newtonian fluids and only a minor attempt has been made to extend the work to non-Newtonian materials.The rheology of non-Newtonian materials is outlined and the typical behaviour of mineral slurries is indicated.The importance of flow velocity, flow pattern, and fluid turbulence is discussed with relation to suspension of solids and rate of reaction.Data on experimental leaching of ore from Mary Kathleen, Queensland, show the effect of different mixing impellers.In conclusion, factors involved in the selection of a mixer are presented with emphasis on economic appraisal after pilot experimentation.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of mixing has attracted considerable attention during recent years, but relatively little work has been undertaken for the study of non-Newtonian materials. Most work has been restricted to Newtonian fluids because there are less inconsistencies in such study.Mixing, by definition, implies blending or combining, and ranges from gentle mixing which blends the contents of a large tank in 24 hours to violent mixing which completely homogenises the contents of a tank within seconds. Metzner and Otto (1957) have pointed out the present lack of knowledge on the degree (or quality) of mixing. Apart from this fact the design of mixers for Newtonian materials would seem to be reasonably certain.Both capital and operating costs rise rapidly with increasing mixer size. Therefore the design, or selection, of a mixer is a matter for economic consideration in the overall aspect of plant design and operation.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Huoqiu iron ore field in north-west Anhui province is located in the south-east margin of the North China Craton and hosts large iron resources. Orebodies are hosted in Neoarchean amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks, forming silicon-iron bands from north to south. The area is dominated by an Early Precambrian basement consisting of Neoarchean grey gneisses, amphibolites and metasediments. The gneisses are similar with assemblages of Trondhjemite-Tonalite-Granodiorite in compositions and intercalated with amphibolites. Igneous zircons from gneisses and amphibolites have U-Pb ages of 2.86 and 2.75 Ga respectively, which are interpreted as the crystallisation ages of their protolith. Zircons from amphibolite and gneiss have eHf(t) values of 2.4–15.5 and -3.0–1.5 respectively. The tDM2(Hf) model ages of the gneiss range from 2.87 to 3.14 Ga, which is consistent with tDM1(Hf) ages of amphibolite (2.84–3.16 Ga). The U-Pb-Hf isotopes thus confirm that the gneisses were generated by partial melting of amphibolite. Two granites produce two group Hf isotopic compositions. The older one (1916 ± 42 Ma) has eHf(t) values and tDM1(Hf) ages of -9.4–3.4 and 2.24–2.71 Ga respectively, whereas the younger one (1823 ± 41 Ma) shows a large variation in eHf(t) values of -18.1–12.5 and tDM1(Hf) model ages of 1.73–2.92 Ga. Geological and geochemical characteristics indicate that the Huoqiu banded iron formations are a Superior-type iron formation rather than an Algoma-type as previously considered.CITATION:Yang, X, Liu, L and Wang, B, 2015.
