In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

Solutions of copper(II) sulphate in acidified aqueous acetonitrile leach copper from copper-lead matte derived from the drossing of lead with sulphur to produce solutions of copper(I) sulphate. The reactivity of the matte constituents towards copper(II) sulphate is Cu2S> PbS > CuS > > Pb. According to the leach conditions, part or ,all of the copper may be leached 'leaving a residue of CuS/PbS, or S/CuS/PbS04, or S/PbS04, to be recycled to the lead smelter. Complete extraction of the copper requires leaching with oxygen which occurs under mild conditions in the presence of acetonitrile and sulphuric acid in water. Copper is selectively recovered as a pure product by electrochemical or thermal disproportionation of copper(I) sulphate solutions. A notional process is proposed.

A Simulation Study on Two-Stage Grinding with High-Pressure Roller Mills By the application of high-pressure roller mill (HPRM) in the field of mineral processing, computer simulation can be used to predict overall performance of a grinding circuit based on data obtained from HPRM comminution test in pilot scale or industrial scale. Using the model developed by Klymowsky and Liu for HPRM comminution and an extended Plitt's model for classification, steady-state of a closed circuit grinding can be calculated by means of a virtual locked-cycle-test conducted on computer. This paper presents the result of a simulation study on two-stage grinding with HPRM as the comminution device. The emphasis is put on the influences of circuit-configuration and way of recirculating classifier's coarse-product on the overall circuit performance. The results show that two-stage grinding with HPRM has its merit and flexibility in meeting demands of various grinding tasks in mineral processing.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, thePacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinental metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly related to S-type granite of crustal source that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of mineralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metallogenetic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

In 1984/85 financial year Australia produced 529 thousand barrels per day (kbd) of crude oil. By far the major contribution (453 kbd) was light waxy oil from offshore Gippsland, Victoria. When these discoveries were made in the latter 1960s, imported oil was available in abundant supply and at low prices. Because of this, the Gippsland producers persuaded Government to control the marketing and pricing of their crude, and thus provide the required security of offtake. Political events in the middle East created supply shortages during the 1970s, and dragged up government selling prices for OPEC crude oil. Thus Arab Light crude that sold for less than US$2/barrel (bl) in 1970 reached $34/bl in 1981. Following the consequent decline in world oil demand, in 1982, Australian refiners sought to evade their obligation to lift Gippsland crude. Hence, in 1983, the Government was forced to introduce a floor quota of 385 kbd of Gippsland crude liftings and to allow producers to export any additional production refiners did not require. On expiry of the old arrangements, Government introduced a partial free market from January 1985, whereby the balance in excess of 350 kbd may be sold to Australian refiners at negotiated prices, or exported as before. In 1984/85 exports were some 90 kbd and will be higher in the current year. About half this total has been exported by BHP, providing valuable experience and lessons which are described in the paper.

A rainfall simulator was developed to assist with hydrogeomorphic research into the stability of engineered landforms associated with rehabilitated uranium mines in the Top End of Australia. It can be used in rough terrain with slope gradients up to 30o. The rainfall simulator is modular, utilises upward jetting nozzles, has a multiple head arrangement and is capable of delivering rainfall intensities between 60 and 300 mmh-1 over areas up to 1000 m2 and could be easily modified for larger areas. Rainfall uniformity is commonly in excess of 80 per cent and the kinetic energy approaches that of natural rainfall (The modular design utilises an equilateral triangular array of rainfall stands, constructed from galvanised steel water pipes and flexible plastic hoses. Total construction costs are low. The water supply reservoir is mobile and easily constructed. An example of its use at Ranger Uranium Mine, investigating the effect of cover on rainsplash and rainwash dominated processes shows that vegetation cover is likely to reduce the erosion rate by these processes by at least four times below that experienced on bare areas.

Factors leading to the decision to use Joy Continuous Miners for pillar extraction in the Burwood Colliery are outlined. A detailed description is given of the Joy 1-CM-2 Continuous Miner, including the power supply to the machine, and the method of cutting coalfrom a face. Modifications found necessary in practice are dealt with.The Joy 10 S.C. shuttle car used in conjunction with the Miner, and alterations made to this unit, are then described, together with Ancillary units for the whole installation such as transformers, motor generator set, air compressor,_ cables for power supply and water supply for dust suppression.Special arrangements were necessary to transport the Miner and Shuttle Cars through the tunnel to the Victoria Tunnel seam, and the method of overcoming the transport difficulties is discussed. Manning of the Continuous Miner unit, and final preparation andsubsequent working of the pillars is outlined. Special attention must be given to maintenance of the machines.It is concluded that the combination of Joy Continuous Miner and Shuttle Car is an excellent method for removing pillars in the Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONThis paper deals with the Burwood Colliery in the RH.P. Group in which some units are engaged in the mechanical extraction of pillars with Joy Continuous Miners.In 1941, an amendment to the Coal Mines Regulation Act of N.S.W. forbade the extraction of pillars by mechanical means unless with the express permission of the Minister for Mines. As this permission was not forthcoming, no mechanical extraction of pillars took place in Australia until 1954 As it was doubtful during most of this period whether mechanical extraction would ever come about, coal generally was won with a view to maximum extraction in the first workings, thus giving rise to centre gannon bord panels and 45° angle cut throughs as shown in Fig. 1.

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

You may rest assured I will use my best endeavours to promote the interests of the Institute in every way that lies in my power. In reviewing the work of the past year, it is a matter for congratulation to find the Institute in a position at once so healthy and robust, and that notwithstanding the acute depression which has prevailed in the mining industry.Owing to deaths or departures from the colony, the names of six members have disappeared from the roll of membership, but you will be pleaed to learn that several new members have been elected, the register now, showing 56 Members, 25Associates and 2 Students. A complete record of the papers read and the discussions that took place will be found embodied in the splendid volume of Transactions which has just been issued, and which I am sure will be welcomed by mining engineers in all parts of the world.

At Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system, TVZ, mineral distribution patterns in geothermal wells are analogous to those in epithermal veins. Fluid flow through geothermal wells is focused over vertical intervals >500 m with discharge at rates up to 90 l/s. Focused flow at similar rates also occurs in natural systems where hydrothermal eruption vents provide enhanced vertical permeability. These vents are commonly aligned with the tectonic fabric, indicating fault control at depth. We suggest that host rock strength and structural context exert significant control on the hydrological regime conducive to epithermal mineralisation.

The utilisation of low-grade raw materials such as fine iron ore and semi-soft coking coal, and reduction of CO2 emissions are important issues in the ironmaking process. To solve these issues, a new process called PosPRA (POSCO prereduced agglomeration process) has been developing at POSCO. It focuses on the reduction of carbon composite iron ore briquette in travelling grate. In this study, the possibility of manufacturing the prereduced agglomerate (PRA) under oxidising atmosphere with travelling grate and the optimum manufacturing conditions of carbon composite iron ore briquette are investigated. The results have shown that controlling the temperature and oxygen potential in the range from 1100 to 1200°C and below 10 vol per cent respectively is very important to increase the reduction efficiency of briquette in travelling grate. High quality properties of the green briquette and PRA could be manufactured by using the briquette mixed with 20 wt per cent of coal under 0.1 mm in size under compacting pressure in the range from 3 to 7 t/cm. Adding 1 wt per cent water as a binder is proper under the condition of high compacting pressure. In a pot grate test, the compressive strength and metallisation degree of PRA are achieved over 150 kgf/p and about 55 per cent respectively, at bed temperature 1150°C and oxygen potential of 10 vol per cent when 20 wt per cent of coal is mixed in the briquette.CITATION:Wang, M K, Son, S H, Park, J I, Jeong, H K and Cho, B K, 2017. Sulfide chimney samples collected during the 1998 - 1999 R/V Atlantis û DSV Alvin 3 - 30 research cruise have been examined and classified into four types, based on common characteristics. Chimney morphology is the most important characteristic and resulted in the following groups: 1. flutes, 2. cones, 3. wide-flats, and 4. beehives. Other characteristics resulted in the classification of subgroups within the flute, cone and wide-flat groups. The combination of characteristics, including; the presence of an orifice, internal chimney fabrics, wall thickness, extent of weathering, and the presence of Alvinella worm casts, enable evolutionary trends between the different chimneys types to be established. These trends indicate that with time, flutes evolve from immature zoned chimneys with a central orifice and smooth thin-walls, into cone chimneys with thick walls and massive fabrics which have their orifices infilled by massive sulfides, and a rough exterior. Repeated mineralisation within, cones may result in the formation of wide-flat chimneys. Beehive chimneys can form at any time during chimney growth.

Dioctahedral clay minerals in the volcanic-hosted Golden Cross epithermal Au deposit, New Zealand, have been investigated by petrography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy/analytical electron microscopy (TEM/AEM) to determine the nature of these minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit. Heterogeneity in the distribution of dioctahedral clays is observed from the hand-specimen scale to the TEM scale, indicating that primary rock textures and fluid pathways (related to rock type, porosity/permeability and fluid/rock ratios), in addition to temperature, are important factors controlling the distribution. As the proportion of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) decreases, TEM observations show decreasing layer stacking order, parallelism of packets, and packet size, and increasing apparent porosity. AEM structural data show a corresponding decrease in AlIV, AlVI, and K+, and an increase in Si, Ca2+, and Fetotal. The observations of this study indicate that local dioctahedral clay mineral reaction progress is controlled mainly by permeability and structure, but that this is superimposed on a predictable, system-wide clay mineral distribution that is controlled by temperature and fluid/rock ratio.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Any consistent relation between gas condition and subsequent mining conditions - outbursting or not might be valuable in prediction of outbursts.INSTANTANEOUS OUTBURSTSInstantaneous outbursts (Hargraves, 1958) , are largely unpredictable and unaccountable ejections of coal (up to 5,000 tons) and gas (up to 5,000,000 cu.ft.) from a standing coal face. Further evidence is presented as to the widespread occurrence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in nature in association with sulphide minerals. Leaching rates are discussed in terms of the effect of environmental parameters, particularly Eh and pH, on the bacterial process.The methods used to investigate leaching phenomena are described and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. A theoretical treatment of the bacterial leaching process is given which indicates that the optimum conditions arrived at by traditional methods are compatible with those deduced from consideration of the mathematics of continuous culture and thermodynamics

Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.l mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass Yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80 per cent and mass yields of less than one per cent can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.
