(written discussion?).- I embrace ace the opportunity to take part in a discussion of Mr. Woodruff's paper because a successful discerning of what actually constitutes pet-roliferous areas from the geologists' standpoint is worthy of our endeavors, not only from the intellectual side, but also because it may lead, as Mr. Woodruff hopes, to the more certain establishment of principles that can be applied to other continents in exploiting them for petroleum. This discussion will also embrace the results of two other recent papers, one by Alexander W. McCoy and one by Maurice G. Mehl.1 Sources of Petroleum.-Mr. Woodruff is agreed that petroleum comes from plants and animals, or possibly from both, and that it has ac-cumulated by migration into reservoir rocks. These reservoir rocks must of course be porous to become catch basins for the oil and gas, and then, too, their present structures are variable, as they occur in anticlines, domes, terraces, etc. , The structures, he states, are more widespread than are the oil pools, and the same is true for the reservoir rocks. One of the engineering proposals in the last Congress which was of interest to engineers was the soldiers' land settlement plan proposed by Secretary Lane, under which returned soldiers, sailors and marines would be employed on construction work in the reclamation of swamp and arid lands and would thereafter be given preference in the selection and settlement of those lands. This bill failed in the fillibuster at the end of the session. It is likely that some sort of a plan for soldiers' settlement will come before the next Congress. A new bill has been written up for introduction at the next session which proposes an "infiltration method" of buying improved farms in established communities for' the soldiers' settlement purpose, under the authority and direction of the Farm Loan Board. The contrast of this bill to the one recommended by Secretary Lane is of vital importance to engineers at this time; first, because of the broad engineering improvement program that the latter bill proposes as against no engineering improvement under the infiltration plan; secondly, the community settlement plan of Secretary Lane means improvement of waste lands requiring much engineering work.

The Copper Canyon and Copper Basin properties of Duval Corp., in Lander Co., have been recently added to the list of porphyry copper mines in Nevada, marking the first new copper open pit operations in this state in 15 years. Ore is processed in the 4000 tpd flotation mill at Copper Canyon, with some copper being recovered by dump leaching. The ore from Copper Basin, 10 miles northeast of the Canyon, is trucked to the mill for concentration. Cost of developing the properties is estimated at $22 million. It was recognized at an early stage of exploration that the two deposits were quite different. Continuity, mineralogy and grade of ore are much more uniform in the Canyon than in the higher grade, pod-like deposits in the Basin. The fundamental difference between the two areas is that the Canyon mineralization is dominantly hypogene, whereas the Basin ores are secondarily enriched.

Introduction Drilling is the initial operating step In open pit mining. It goes hand-in-hand with the blasting operations to ensure adequately broken material for the excavation equipment employed. The drilling effectiveness is highly dependent on the quality of the drill evaluation. This discussion will center on the parameters that are needed to evaluate drill requirements for a new mine The procedure that is generated can, however, be used to evaluate whether to expand existing operations and replace existing equipment. Methods of breaking ground, other than blasthole drilling and blasting, such as ripping, will not be discussed. The importance of correct drill evaluation extends to the other facets of open pit mining. Inadequate fragmentation, the direct result of poor drilling and blasting techniques, results in oversized, hard digging for the excavating equipment. The result is higher secondary blasting costs, reduced excavation efficiencies, higher excavation costs, higher road repair costs, and higher haulage equipment costs. The main objective of evaluating drill fleet requirements, therefore, is to determine the equipment needed to minimize the operational constraints, caused by blasthole drilling, on other facets of open pit mining at the lowest cash flow costs.

THIS year's Chairman of the Mineral industry Education Division is, like his predecessors, no novice in that field, having been in 1928 Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee which labored so well that it was enlarged into a Division of the Institute's activities . For almost a quarter of a century lie has been a dean in mining and engineering schools, with considerable experience before that as a teacher. A native-born New Englander (June 23, 1881), he naturally went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received the Bachelor's degree in mining in 1904. Just why a Fitchburg. The senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallo-graphic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point As, at about 900° C, iron passes from the gamma condition to a new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transformation, however, is not instantaneous. THE Sierra Consolidated Mines Co., organized in 1909, owns, together with other holdings, practically all of the productive mineral area in the Ocampo district. Lying within this area are 15 mines, large and small, that had previously been worked and appear to have yielded, since the discovery of the camp, about 100 years ago, bullion of a total value of over $50,000,000. The deepest mine, the Santa Juliana, had been worked to 1,100 ft. below the outcrop. The reopening of the mines involved, first, extensive and thorough development to open up the known ore-shoots at greater depth and explore the ledges for additional shoots, and, second, a revision of existing equipment and methods, so as to increase output and reduce cost of production. This paper will give some account of the metallurgical treatment and a description of the new mill to be built at El Salto.

WITH the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement.

The research here recorded was undertaken early in the present year, and has been prosecuted steadily for about eight months. While the work has been under my constant supervision and advice, the labor has all been performed by Mr. Sadler, to whom is chiefly due the development of the successive steps which have led to the final result. The process is better than I dared to hope, and we are able to place at the command of chemists and engineers interested in the matter an apparatus of continuous and uninterrupted action, and methods of analysis by which the daily averages of the two variable and inconstant factors of illuminating gas, ammonia and sulphur, may be determined with all needful accuracy, even by those little skilled in chemical manipulation, and with very little loss of time. This research has been carried out in the laboratory of the New Haven Gaslight Company.

Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]

With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

Production equal to or greater than open-hole completions is possible through perforated completions if the flow paths throughout the perforations are free of obstructions.' Previous investigations have indicated that, in some cases, maximum productivity is not obtained due to plugging of the perforations with debris from the wellbore fluid and/or debris from the perforating process. Control of wellbore fluid and proper well completion techniques are very important in the elimination of perforation plugging.' Selection of properly designed perforating equipment also is quite important for maximum well productivity. Studies made with the use of the perforation flow laboratory, in which perforating tests are run under simulated well conditions, have shown that perforation plugging occasionally occurs. Plugs in perforations result from various causes. One of the contributors to plugging that can be controlled by the perforating device is the slug or carrot resulting from jet perforating. This condition has undergone extensive study, and previous developments have resulted in a decrease in carrot size—but not in complete elimination. It was felt that, if a method of completely eliminating the carrot could be found (with charge performance equal or better than previously obtained), a significant contribution would have been made. Such a charge has been developed and is reviewed in this paper. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF CARROT ELIMINATION There are several popular theories of how a shaped charge jet is formed."," One of these is the hydrodynamic theory, wherein the liner is treated as a fluid under the impact of the explosive forces. Another is the spalling theory, where the interaction of shock waves in the liner causes small particles to be torn from the inner surface of the liner and projected at high velocity toward a common focal line to form the jet. It is not unreasonable to assume that both of these theories may be partially correct. For purposes of our discussion, it is simpler to use the second theory. Generally speaking, when a plate of metal is attacked by an explosive shock pulse, the pulse is transmitted through the metal at high velocity, as shown in Fig. 1(A). Pressures at the shock front may be 6 X 10' psi or higher. This shock wave (a compression wave) upon striking a free surface, Fig. 1(B), is partially reflected back as a tension wave. The interaction of the tension wave with the decaying compression wave causes a stress concentration in the metal; when this stress becomes great enough, a failure occurs and a small particle flies off and is projected away from the metal surface, as shown in Fig. 1(C). A new free surface is then presented to the shocks; the process repeats itself until there is no longer enough energy to cause failure, leaving a portion of the metal relativcly untouched. See Fig. 1(D). To apply this theory to a perforating shaped charge, consider the flat plate to be folded into a somewhat conical shape, with a column of explosive placed in intimate contact with the cone (Fig. 2). Flotation variables were investigated for the re-clamation of phosphate from a Florida washer slime. Under optimum conditions, 92% of the phosphate was recovered. Further cleaning of the rougher flotation concentrate resulted in a product containing about 30% P2O5 with a phosphate recovery of 65%. The enormous amount of slimes rejected in the Florida pebble phosphate fields, containing roughly one-third of the phosphate in the pebble matrix,1 has long been considered as a serious problem to the industry. The mere disposal of these slimes has posed an almost insurmountable task for several investigators.2-5 Some companies still resort to huge surface dams, some covering 1800 acres, for slime disposal.6 Information on the recovery of fine phosphate from these slimes is scanty. Dry separation8 and electrostatic beneficiation8 were suggested, but would necessitate radical changes in the present mining and concentration methods. Haseman10 proposed the selective flocculation of colloidal phosphate with starch, while Ralston11 suggested the removal of clay from the matrix by amine flotation. Leaching of the slimes for recovering the small amount of uranium was attempted by the Battelle Memorial Institute12,13 but proved to be economically unfeasible. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the optimum fatty-acid flotation conditions for reclaiming the phosphate discarded with the Bartow washer slime. Prior to the flotation experimerits, however, the size distribution and the minera-logical composition of the employed slime had to be determined.

Drilling activity in Nebraska continued to decline during 1944. Nine tests for oil and gas were completed during the year and four wells were drilling at the close of the year. Four wells were drilled in Richardson County, three in Hitchcock County and single wells were drilled or drilling in Butler, Gage, Holt, Nemaha and Scottsbluff Counties. Only one of the completions resulted in commercial pro- duction, the others being abandoned as dry holes. A number of stratigraphic test holes were drilled in the state by the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., in Johnson, Otoe, Chase, Dundy and Garden Counties. No new fields were discovered during 1944 but the limits of the Barada field, Richardson County, was extended a short distance southward. Oil production continued to drop and about two thirds as much oil was produced in 1944 as in 1943.
