THE meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Annual Meeting of the Institute maintained the high standard set in previous years, and attendance of member: of the Division was at a new high. The impact of the war was evident not only in the tone of many of die papers but also in the presence at the meeting of many of our members now serving in the armed forces of our-country. Ken interest was manifested in all papers presented and the discussions which followed developed many additional facts of interist and importance. The first activity of the Division was the joint meeting of the Papers and Programs and the Publications Committees on Monday afternoon; at which time definite plans were formulated for a simplification and co-ordination of the work of the committees.

IN an article published in the Iron. Trade Review 1 I gave a convenient arrangement for the installation of wet and dry bulb thermometers for use in making moisture determinations in the air being blown into a blast furnace, and also gave a chart for use in obtaining moisture values from the thermometer readings. The data from which this chart was prepared were obtained from the tables in use by the U. S. Weather Bureau.2 The work of Carrier 3 has shown that these tables are somewhat in error. He has recalculated the values for moisture as referred to, wet and dry bulb thermometer readings, and he has prepared a psychrometric chart from the values thus obtained. This work has priced the subject of psychrometry upon a correct scientific basis. I think it is proper that we should recognize the importance of his work and give him credit for one of the most interesting and valuable researches that have been published in recent years. Blast-furnace men are not ready to use, as he suggests 4 a value expressed in grains of water accompanying a pound of dry air. However convenient this may be for heating and ventilating work and other engineering problems, there are several reasons for preferring the use of a value expressed in grains of water in a. cubic foot of mixed air and water vapor, in connection with combustion phenomena and the effects of moisture on blast-furnace operation. Several methods are now being used by the industry for determining the gas-oil flow characteristics of reservoir rock samples. Most of the laboratory experirnerltal rlzethods can be classified either as steady-state, unsteady-state, or Hassler-type tests. Although the validity of the results obtained by any specific method is not questiorzed, in general, the complexity of these methods leaves much to be desired. This investigation dealt primarily with the development of a simplified unsteady-state (gas drive) laboratory test method for measuring kg/ko re1ationships of small core samples. A procedure for selecting uniform and representative sandstone rock samples was developetl since it was observed that the reliability of the test resu1ts was dependent upon having a sample which was uniform in porosity and permeability. The importance of factors known to influence the results of this type test, such as oil viscosity, gas expansion, and pressure differential were eva/uated. The method of calculating the test results was found to give valid data over a wide range of gas expansion. The limits of pressure differential and oil viscosity which would insure reliable results were defined. In cornparisorz with other presently used testing methods, the gar drive method requires considerably less apparatus, is less time consuming, and is more readily adaptable to a routine type core test. INTRODUCTION The detcrmination of the gas-oil flow characteristics of reservoir rocks has been given concentrated study by the oil industry for the past decade. Both analytical and experimental methods have been considered. The analytical methods have generally relied on a simplified characterization of porous materials in order that the fundamental laws of fluid flow and capillarity could be utilized. More direct experimental methods have been proposed by numerous production research laboratories with the primary goal being a simple and inexpensive, yet reliable method for measuring the gas-oil flow characteristics of reservoir rock samples. The experimental methods which have been reported in the literature generally can be grouped into one of the following classifications: 1. Steady state1,2,3,4 in which a fixed ratio of flowing fluids is forced through the test sample until equilibrium conditions of saturation and pressure gradient are established. 2. Hassler or stationary liquid method5,6,7 in which a uniform liquid saturation is attained, usually through capillary desaturation, then gas or oil is flowed through the sample at a pressure drop insufficient to disturb the pre-established saturation. :. Non-steady state method1,8,9,10 In which only the gas phase is injected into the sample, causing displacement of the oil phase and resulting in a system of continually changing average saturation and saturation gradient. The steady-state and Hassler methods have been most popular because, no doubt, of the simplicity of the actual relative permeability calculations. The problems involved in these methods were limited to apparatus design and measurement techniques. In the steady-state method, for instance, a constant flowing fluid ratio is established which, at equilibrium, results in an essentially uniform saturation over the entire length of the test sample. Therefore, the basic flow characteristics could be obtained by correlating the average saturation of the test sample with the kg/ko determined at various flowing gas-oil ratios.

IN their recent complete review of the subject of age-hardening,1 R. F. Mehl and L. K. Jetter classify the main types of precipitation-hardening alloys under two headings, depending upon the nature of the precipitate and the character of the precipitation. In the alloys falling under the first heading, which display "continuous precipitation" and are typified by the aluminum-copper alloys, "precipitation seems to occur without much regard to grain boundaries and apparently at much the same rate at every point," although an acceleration in regions plas-tically deformed has definitely been established .2 In the second type of alloys the precipitation is "discontinuous," as in the copper-silver system for example, and "seems to start in restricted regions, primarily those contiguous with the grain boundaries, and to spread inward in an advanc-ing wave." The reasons for the occurrence of these two greatly different types of precipitation are unknown, as are those for many other reactions that take place in the solid state. In the present paper only the first or "continuous" type of precipita-tion will be dealt with, for which a complete crystallographic mechanism has been worked out for the process of precipitation from a supersaturated solid solution of copper in aluminum. Based upon this mechanism, an explanation of the various property changes found experimentally will be developed in the second paper of this series. In later papers "dis-continuous precipitation" in copper-silver alloys will be explained, and an effort will be made to rationalize the two processes and types of precipitation.

In August 1954 a low altitude test geophysical survey was made in the Green Pond area of Morris County, New Jersey, with a Gulf Research and Development Co. Model I1 total magnetic field variation magnetometer mounted in a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. The test was made in this area to compare the results of a high precision, very low altitude magnetometer survey with an existing ground magnetic survey in this area having known magnetite concentrations, so that the method could be used in areas of difficult access for the detailing of airborne magnetometer anomalies of interest in place of ground surveys. The load capacity of the Sikorsky S-55 permitted installation of a recording scintillation counter so that a radioactivity survey would be made simultaneously with the magnetometer survey.

IT was but a few years ago that the mining engineer, and his confreres, the civil, mechanical and electrical engineer, were stigmatized by politicians of the parish? pump variety as advance agents of unprincipled exploiters of backward countries. Today he is recognized as a most important missionary of civilization in opening up new territory to contribute its mineral wealth and incidentally its other resources for the needs of mankind. An engineer, it is now conceded, is not only a benefactor of the world at large, but is a primary factor in the betterment of conditions of the inhabitants of those countries developed by his skill and indomitable courage-for courage is requisite in pioneering and his indefatigable industry. The engineer will, I believe, become a real "Ambassador of Good Will," when the slow-consenting academic mind realizes as it must that beneficent deeds are more enduring and more convincing than mere gestures of professed amity.

Pelletizing on a commercial scale is only 10 years old; yet in this period more than 150 million tons of pellets have been produced. Instrumentation and controls have played an important part in the development of an entirely new industry in almost unprecedented time. Initially, most control circuits used in the pelletizing industry were manually operated, since the confidence factor in instruments and controls was quite low at that time. This changed considerably in recent years and improvements in the use of instruments and controls have probably developed more rapidly in pelletizing than in any other metallurgical process. Now, within a decade of the start of commercial operations, the use of manually operated controls has changed and consideration is being given to the utilization of computers for data logging and control purposes.

FOR four years your Committee has been engaged in the study of problems connected with the educational preparation of professional geophysicists. The present report represents the conclusions drawn from the investigations and deliberations undertaken since it was first organized. These studies have shown that the evolution of geophysics has proceeded along lines that differed from those marking the advance of classical geology. The latter science developed as a descriptive one, dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena, and the elementary, rational explanations that could be offered therefor. The fact that these phenomena were also chemical and physical in nature was seldom given more than passing acknowledgment. During the last half century, however, a new approach to problems of terrestrial phenomena has become of greater significance. This new attack has come through the sciences of physics and chemistry, as the people trained therein have investigated the facts of the earth as problems in their respective sciences. This development has been chiefly at the hands of European investigators, and European universities have long recognized it by establishing departments or institutions of geophysics. In the universities of North America, their arbitrary departmentalization into fields of physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, etc., has prevented the academic recognition of such domains of science as geophysics and geochemistry. In consequence, the development of these subjects in the United States has been largely at the hands of nonacademic institutions, while the universities themselves are evidently in a state of confusion as to how the subject should be handled. In some places an attempt to teach geophysics is made in the physics department, in others in the geology department, in some in the engineering school, and occasionally as a cooperative effort; a Department of Geophysics is seldom found in North America. In some instances, proper academic planning has been precluded by interdepartmental jealousies, or by lack of appreciation of the significance of the subject. For the background upon which these conclusions are based, the reader is referred to reports previously issued or sponsored by your Committee. These reports are available from Institute Headquarters. The Engineering Council met on October 11 in the rooms of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Engineering Societies Building, New York. The Rules Committee submitted a draft of rules for the admission of other societies to the Council and progress was made in their consideration. The Committee on Public Affairs reported on a number of requests that the Council support pending or proposed legislation. Remedial laws intended to promote hydro-electric development were favored and Council voted to offer its cooperation to the United States Chamber of Commerce which is interesting itself in this matter. A movement to coordinate, unify and strengthen the work of various engineering committees cooperating with the federal authorities at Washington was favorably considered. Messrs. H. W. The ripper is not a new tool. In fact, it dates back as far as the Roman Empire. The Roman's ripper-mounted on wheels and shaped something like a plow-was pulled by oxen and was used to loosen the earth for the shovelers and basket carriers building the Appian Way. There are records of rippers being used in this country in railroad construction between 1860 and 1880. The tractor-mounted ripper, introduced a little over ten years ago, extended the capability of the ripper because of greatly improved maneuverability and the additional weight which could be brought to bear upon the ripper tooth. Increases through the last ten years in tractor weight and horsepower further increased ripper capability until now, in some geographic areas, hardly any rock is unchallenged by them.

The effect of cathodically charging zone-refined iron with hydrogen and the resultant yield stress-grain size relationship has been investigated by tensile testing at -31°C. The resulting Petch plots (using a least-squares analysis) reveal a significant reduction in the slope and an increase in the intercept for specimens cathodically charged with hydrogen, regardless of whether the hydrogen is present during testing or is removed by evacuation. Other than surface blistering, the major effect of cathodically charging this material is to create occasional grain boundary cracks and thus presumably a large number of free dislocations at grain boundaries. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the slope of the Petch plot is related to the stress required to activate dislocation sources at or near pain boundaries. While there is no significant effect of the presence of hydrogen on the lower yield stress of this material, the ductility is considerably reduced. After hydrogen removal by evacuation, the ductility recovers substantially and almost complete recovery of ductility is experienced by the smaller grain size specimens. THE influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of ferritic materials has received much attention throughout the history of the metallurgy profession. This interest has stemmed from the obvious importance of preventing the catastrophic failure of parts in service, and from the desire to determine what mechanism is responsible for the observed behavior. The various mechanisms proposed for hydrogen em-brittlement have been discussed in detail by Tetel-man,'who concludes that a combination of the applied stress and hydrogen pressure within voids best accounts for the many experimental observations reported. From a quite reasonable correlation of the strain aging and delayed-failure behavior of a variety of materials,2-7 Troiano and coworkers are of the opinion that the delayed-failure mechanism (slow strain rate embrittlement as well) is better explained as a lattice effect; solute elements diffuse to regions of high triaxial stress, form uncondensed atmospheres there, and effect a reduction in the cohesive strength of the lattice. Since hydrogen yield points8,9 have been observed in ferritic materials, and since the hydrogen embrittlement process may be related to strain aging, one further contribution to embrittlement could be hydrogen-dislocation interactions which make crack blunting by plastic deformation a more difficult process. The etch" relationship offers a means of comparing the relative ease of initiating and propagating plastic deformation in metals and alloys. In the present study, this relationship was used to compare the behavior of zone-refined iron in three conditions: uncharged, cathodically charged with hydrogen, and cathodically charged with hydrogen and evacuated. These Petch plots and the observed ductility parameters allowed a separation of the effects of the very presence of hydrogen and the act of cathodically charging hydrogen into this material. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An ingot of zone-refined iron was obtained from Battelle Memorial Institute which contained the following (typical) interstitial impurities in ppm: carbon, 10 * 5; nitrogen, 1; oxygen, 22; hydrogen, 0.9. The ingot was cold-reduced to a 1/2-in.-sq cross section, recrystallized 1 hr at 575°C, and then straight-rolled to a thickness of about 0.105 in. The Front Range portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt is an extensive area of mineralization with mining activity dating from 1859 with the discovery of large gold deposits. After an initial boom period and gradual diminishing production, present activity is restricted to molybdenum in Clear Creek County, uranium in Jefferson County, and several small operations extracting gold and silver in Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties. Gold and silver have dominated the production in the Front Range, though the complex mineralization created milling and smelting problems and it is postulated that considerable amounts of precious metals remain in the mine dumps. This area is plagued by a severe mine drainage problem, with Clear Creek most impacted by many draining mines and tailings in the basin. Boyles et al. Moran and Wentz, Wentz, Wildeman et al., have examined various aspects of the impact of mine drain¬age in the Clear Creek basin. The primary objective of this study was to collect data on the tailings, drainages, and leaching experiments in order to make preliminary suggestions for reducing the impact while recovering metal values to offset treatment costs. A variety of leaching experiments were performed on tailings from the Nevada Gulch area in the Central City mining district. Leachings were performed in vertical tubes indoors and wooden boxes exposed to the outside environment. In the leaching experiments, the leaching solution, grain size, and residence times were varied, while forced aeration was used in some experiments. Bacterial nutrient 9K° and mine drainage were used in some of the experiments. A total of 14 additional tailings samples were analyzed for base and precious metals. The composition of the mine drainage and tailings used in the leaching experiments, as well as data on the additional samples are shown in [Table 1]. Leachate samples were taken periodically for analysis until compositions leveled off. Results and Discussion Leaching with distilled water was used as a control and best illustrates the basic behavior of the leaching process for zinc in a vertical tube [(Fig. 1)]. More acidic leachings increased concentrations of metals as did smaller grain sizes, though the time required increased significantly. Mine drainage with its high concentration of dissolved iron sometimes decreased the heavy-metal concentration in the leachate due to oxidation of Fe 2 and precipitation of Fe(OH)9 which absorbs some of the dissolved heavy metals. In the larger scale experiment carried out in the simulated leaching pad, substantial concentrations of metals were attained in the final leachate after one month. In this experiment the leachate was not recycled, but allowed to saturate the tailings continually with evaporation loss made up by additions of Quartz Hill drainage and nutrient 9K. The concentration of the metals in the leachate and the increase over the input solution are given in [Table 2]. Heap leaching of low-grade copper and uranium ores is successfully carried out in many districts, enhanced by the metabolism of autotrophic bacteria of the Thiobacillus-Ferrobacillus group. These ubiquitous organisms enhance metal leaching, and general aspects of heap leaching are discussed by Malouf, Trudinger, Pings, and Duncan et al. Conclusions and Recommendations Returning to the primary objective, how to reduce the mine drainage impact and recover metal values, we need to consider how the data may suggest avenues toward this objective.
