In silver alloys containing less than 0.2 wt pet Cu. the reaction 9 + 1/2 0, = CuO(s) was found to proceed to equilibrium between 700o and 808oC. From measurements of the equilibrium dissociation pressures of the CuO at several temperatures, the differential heat of solution and the activity coeflicients for copper in silver were calculated. These values were found to be in reasonable agreement with those calculated from data appearing in the literature. A metastable "copper oxide" with an atom ratio of oxygen to copper as high as 1.7 was formed by internal oxidation at 300°C of these same dilute Ag-Cu alloys. No anomalous behavior was noted in the temperature dependence of oxygen solubility in silver. The solubility minima between 300" and 800°C reported several years ago can be accounted for, at least in part, by reactions with trace impurities, such as copper. Cold-worked siloer exhibits an enhanced permeability to oxygen. THIS investigation was undertaken because of our interest in interactions between solute and lattice defects in metals. The reason for the choice of the O-Ag system for study is the anomaly in the solubility of oxygen in silver reported by Steacie and Johnson1 in 1926, specifically that isobars between 100 and 800 Torr show solubility minima at 400°C. It was also claimed that the copper impurity in the silver was not responsible for the minima. Recently, Eichenauer and Müller2 proposed that surface adsorption might have been responsible for this solubility anomaly, but no adsorption isotherms are available to check the pressure and temperature dependence observed at the low temperatures. Surface-tension measurements on silver made by Buttner, Funk, and udin3 suggest that a considerable fraction of a monolayer of oxygen exists on silver at 922°C and at an oxygen pressure of 150 Torr. To account for the pressure sensitivity reported by Steacie and Johnson1 at 300°C, the oxygen bound to the surface at 922°C cannot be considered relevant; the existence of a surface layer at 300°C characterized by a lower energy of binding would be required to explain the effect. All of our attempts to detect an interaction of this type with surface sites have failed. In this investigation we have not been able to associate the dissolution of oxygen in silver with a dislocation interaction. Evidently, severely cold-worked silver does not contain a sufficient number of trapping -sites for oxygen. Indeed, our work shows that oxidation of trace impurities in the silver was probably responsible for Steacie and Johnson's results. In addition, we have been able to establish the nature of the reaction with copper impurity in silver by thermodynamic considerations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Measurements of both the internal oxidation rates and the solubility were made volumetric ally in a system equipped with a gas burette, a mercury manometer, a McLeod Gage, and a mass spectrometer. The silver and the silver-alloy samples were protected from contamination by mercury vapor from our pressure gages by suitably placed refrigerated (-78°C) traps. Silica reaction vessels were employed for experiments performed above 500°C. Spectroscopically pure gases were used in this investigation. The highest-purity silver used in the solubility measurements was 99.999 pet. By chemical analysis 2 ppm of Cu were found in this silver. The two Ag-Cu alloys used in this research were made up to 0.14 and 0.15 wt pet Cu starting with 99.999 pet Ag. An unexpected source of error was discovered in the course of the work. At temperatures near 800°C silver distilled from the hot silica reaction tubes into cooler regions of our system. Although the weight loss of silver from the sample was not important in itself, oxygen was being consumed by the silver distilled into the cooler part of the system to form a stable oxide phase from which the oxygen was not recovered. In a separate experiment conducted to determine the necessary correction, losses between 0.2 and 0.3 cu cm (stp) of 0, in 24 hr were measured at 810°C. THE geometrical interpretation of transmission electron micrographs of hcp metals is more complicated than the equivalent interpretation of cubic metal for two reasons: firstly, prominent zone axes are not in general normal to prominent planes, so that a simple diffraction pattern often corresponds to a nonra-tional foil plane; and secondly, the Miller-Bravais sys-tem of indexing directions is not easy to visualize. In this, the indexing is referred to the Bravais four-axis system, and the direction is labeled [hkil], chosen so that and I are shown in Fig. 1. Some geometrical relationships useful for the interpretation of transmission micrographs have been calculated and are tabulated below: 6) Direction of the intersection of two planes; this is easily calculated by applying Condition 4 to both planes: a direction that lies in both planes is clearly their direction of intersection. Some of the above expressions have also recently been given by Otte and Crocker;' Expression 5 is of course in most standard crystallographic texts. ABOUT 55 attended the general session of the Nonferrous Metallurgy Committee on Wednesday afternoon. In opening the proceedings the Chairman, Frank G. Breyer, served notice of his intention to make an early start this year in securing papers for his committee. He voiced the thought that more importance should be attached to the prompt publication of data on new advances in practice; the record of technical progress should be written before the sharpness of the current image becomes blurred by the veil of time. As an illustration, Mr. Breyer declared that great strides have been made in the zinc industry during the past nine years, whereby zinc ore is converted directly to the oxide in large mechanical furnaces, yet the literature is confined to patents.

One form of encouragement for the small copper mining sector in Chile has been the construction and management of custom mill facilities to process the ore. The paper describes an economic analysis framework for the evaluation of government custom milling opportunities. Feasible mill locations and capacities within a region are selected and the infrastructure and milling costs associated with each combination of location and capacity are assessed. For each combination, the economics of developing and operating known copper deposits in the region is evaluated, and an optimum cut-off grade and mine capacity is selected for the deposits which justify development. Since the total ore supply from mines in the region may exceed a particular custom mill capacity, mine development is scheduled to optimize the economics of the mill facility. Finally, the best custom mill location and capacity is selected on the basis of overall costs and benefits. A copper mining region in northern Chile is used to illustrate the application of the model. A mobile mill approach is examined and compared with the fixed location mill alternatives. Results are analyzed as a function of copper price.

This paper describes a method for obtaining compositions of gas and oil phases in equilibrium with each other at a given reservoir temperature and pressure as lean or enriched gas is injected into a reservoir oil not in equilibrium with the gas. The method is based on calculation of equilibrium constants, K, from the equation log Kp = A + B F, where p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. The paper explains how A and B could be determined with a minimum amount of data. The method consists of calculating equilibrium constants as a function of liquid composition and using the K's to calculate changes in compositiort of injection gas as it successively contacts original resetvoir oil at the gas-oil front and the change in composition of reservoir oil as it is successively contacted by the injection gas in the vicinity of an injection well. An iterative process is required. Two examples of the method are given which show how oil and gas compositions and properties are calculated with the aid of a computer. INTRODUCTION The calculation of recovery from lean-gas or enriched-gas injection into a saturated or under-saturated reservoir oil requires a knowledge of how phase properties change in a reservoir between injection well and producing well. To determine the phase compositions or properties experimentally would be difficult and time consuming, especially if one wanted to look at the effect of various injection gas compositions. For some fields an engineer would want to make preliminary calculations on the economics of gas injection before he makes the decision to spend a corrsiderable sum of money for laboratory work to obtain the necessary fluid properties. A method for calculatine compositions and properties based on a minimum of laboratory data is described. The minimum amount of data required is injection gas and reservoir oil composition and injection gas solubility as a function of pressure for an undersaturated oil, or the compositions of mixtures of reservoir fluid with two or more enriched gases, which mixtures have a bubble-point pressure that is the same as the expected average displacement pressure. On the other hand, if the economics appear to be attractive, more laboratory data can be obtained in the form of equilibrium constants for three or more mixtures of the reservoir fluid and injection gases. The method is based on the calculation of K's from the equation, log Kp = A + B F, where K is equilibrium constant, p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. This method of plotting K data by means of the above equation is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.1 A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. It is shown how experimental data are used to determine how A and B vary with composition. BASIS OF METHOD EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS Equilibrium constant (K) data are required for this method. The K of each component is obtained from an equation that gives the product of K and pressure as a function of component characterization factor. The characterization factor F = b(l/Tb — l/T), where b is a constant characteristic of a given component, Tb is the boiling point in OR at atmospheric pressure of the given component, and T is the temperature of the system in OR. This method of plotting K data is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.l The straight-line equation of the log Kp - F plot is log hp = log Kop +BFi, where Kop is at F =0, i designates the component, and B is the slope of the line. HAVING already shown you the methods of making the moulds for casting and how they are to be prepared so that they may receive the melted metals well, it is now necessary, in order to complete the casting with perfection, that I show you not only the operations and instruments by which metals are softened, but also how metals can be made as liquid and fluid as water so they may easily enter into all the hollows of the moulds that you have made. Of these, besides the fire which is the prime agent, there is a very powerful furnace, which is called a reverberator.* I believe this is chosen not only for convenience but also because it is necessary in large casts. This is made of baked bricks, or of crude ones if desired or of suitable fire-resistant stones. Although all masters have the same objective, each one proceeds to make this kind of furnace according to his own ideas so that it can be said that there are almost as many different shapes of such furnaces as there are masters. This can be seen in the place that contains the metal, which is of such a shape that the force of the fire may operate better. Thus some masters are called good who, seeing no farther than what has been shown them, make them circular like a bread oven. Some others make them oval across the fire en- trance, while others extend them lengthwise. Also, there are some who make a single outlet for the flames, some two, and some three. Some make the entrance for the fire high and narrow and others, wide and low. The same is true of the place where the flames are generated, which is called the firebox. Some put the wood in from the side, some lengthwise in the same direction as the entrance for the flames, and some from above by means of a little hole. The occasional reports of progressive furnace-men, giving the results of physical tests to prove the superior qualities of their pig-irons, have encouraged the writer to believe that the time is ripe for the discussion of such work, and the inauguration of some correct system by which the furnace-man and the founder could make intelligent comparison of the elements of strength, deflection, contraction, and chill presented in pigmetal. In most cases the physical tests now made by furnace-men define but one quality in the iron, and are generally too vague to permit any true comparison. For example, one furnaceman tells us he can punch holes in his cast-iron, wishing it to be inferred that the iron is very soft and strong. Another furnace casts a long wedge, the thin end running to a knife's edge, which is supposed to prove the fluidity of the iron, for the founder's benefit. Another casts in square-cornered " chills," to define the hardness or softness of the metal. To the writer's knowledge these tests are not advocated by their originators as suitable for standards; and they are, to his mind, but evidence of unrest on the part of progressive furnace-men, who feel that something should be done in the line of physical tests. The writer knows of no furnace-men who make and keep records of the strength of their iron obtained by means of tests made on recognized standard testing-scales ; but he does know of a prominent furnace-salesman, who, not long ago, came into possession of a 1-inch square bar that stood 1400 pounds

He also represents the Coal Division, in which industry lie has actively participated- for nearly twenty years. Dr. Young was horn in Topeka, Kan., Oct. 1, 1873, received mining degrees from Penn State and ,-Iowa. State, and a Ph.D., from Illinois. The first part of his professional life was spent in teaching first as instructor in mining at Iowa State, second .as professor of mining at the Colorado School' of Mines, third as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo., and finally he taught business

J. M. TIPPETT? Colorado Springs, Co1o.-There are several points which offer ground for discussion, although the authors' indicated results leave small chance for argument. Under classification of the ores as they come to the mill, it will be noted that these are classified according to their lime contents. In previous years the classification was based upon sulfur contents, CaO not being considered; class A would be called the oxidized ore and class B the sulfides. Classification according to CaO is the first public indication that a decided change in the ore has necessitated improved methods of treatment. The very serious effect that CaO, even in small quantities, has upon extraction has been noted for some years.

This growth rate exceeds any value previol~sly reported for the vapor phase growth of Gap. In pure material, mObilities ns high as 175 sq cm per U-sec at room tenzperature and 1450 sq cm per v-sec at 77°K have been obtained. These values are anLong the highest that have been attai)led for this material. For the first time, Gap possesses a number of important properties which make it well-suited for use in electro-optic modulators. First, the transverse electro-optic effect is operable in this material, which makes it possible to increase the path length of the modulated iron doping of Gap has been achieved; this results i?z resistivities of approximately 10" ohm-cm. The problelrls of residual strain and isolated shorting paths in these crystals have been partially solved. Electro-optic modulation of visible radiation has been demonstrated with this material. It is anticipated that further improvement with regard to the probleins of strain and shorting paths will result in a practical Gap electro-optic modulator. radiation without increasing the applied voltage. In addition, this permits the use of thin crystals so that relatively small voltages are needed to provide the requisite high electric fields. The October issues* of the Journals of the three AIME Societies carried a brief resume of the historical development of various technical and professional organizations which in some immediate or remote way affect the individual member of AIME. This resume was presented by the Institute Committee on Inter-Engineering Society Cooperation. Recently, several plans have evolved designed as a first step to provide a so-called "unity organization" for the entire engineering profession. Almost all of the plans involve Engineers' Joint Council, Engineers' Council for Professional Development, and National Society for Professional Engineers in some way or other. Hence our committee is presenting to our membership a resume of the recent activities of the two umbrella organizations and of NSPE. More detailed information on any of these organizations may be obtained from annual reports published by the organizations.

INTEREST in developing White Pine, considered since 1942, was renewed by the Korean conflict and its shortage of domestic sources of copper. In view of this Morris F. La Croix, president of Copper Range Co. of Boston, and of its wholly owned subsidiary, White Pine Copper Co., worked an agreement out with Government officials. Essentially the contract called for a construction loan of $57,185,000 at 5 pct interest, with $13 million additional supplied by Copper Range. Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted for 243,750 tons of copper from the first 275,000 tons produced, at a base price of 25.5& per lb, the contract to expire Dec. 31, 1961.

S. J. Rothman and L. T. Lloyd (Argonne National Laboratory)— Hagel's paperz0 discusses the question of the mechanism for self-diffusion in bcc transition metals. Recent work21"23 has led us to agree with him in reabandoning the ring mechanism in favor of a defect mechanism, most likely vacancies. On the other hand, we think that Hagel's attempt to group together all self-diffusion in bcc transition metals is wrong. We prefer the scheme of Peart, Graham, and omlin," who separate them into two groups. One group contains the anomalously behaved metals P titanium,', y uranium, and perhaps zirconim.' The other group contains a iron," this alloy was held at 1800°C for 2 hr before quenching, its structure was all a. B. C. Giessen, I. Rump, and N. J. Grant (Authors' reply)—We very much appreciate the discussion by Deardorff and Kato regarding the a to /3 transformation temperature of hafnium. In the W-Hf program, as well as in a current study of the system Cr-Hf, standard precautions were exercised against contamination, including vacua of less than 10"5 mm Hg and a weight control check of all specimens to insure an impurity rise of less than 100 ppm. Following receipt of the above discussion, a revision was made in the annealing process. Arc-cast specimens were etched with a 10 pct HF-90 pct HNO solution until 1 mm of surface, including a possible oxide film, was removed. Annealing was done in a hafnium container which provided a long diffusion path for gaseous contaminants. Finally, the heat treating time was shortened. Structural changes were noted to occur quite slowly. A 99.5 at. pct Hf alloy showed 70 pct /3 after 30 min at 1700°C and was 100 pct /3 after 10 min at 1715°C. After 24 hr at 1740C, the alloy was found to be 10 pct/3. This change is due to contamination; it was estimated that it corresponds to an increase of 60°C in the transformation temperature over a 24 hr period. The corresponding change in 30 rnin would be slight. Using the same hafnium as in the above publication, and three new alloys at 98, 99, and 99.5 at. pct Hf, the transformation temperature was indicated to be 1715" 15°C. Since this hafnium contained 4.4 at. pct Zr, a correction of 40 5C, based on an assumed approximately linear transformation temperature curve, must be made for pure hafnium. This yields a value of 1755 20°C in good agreement with Deardorff and Kato's value. Because the slope of the boundary is small, this permits a good extrapolation, and we regard the W-Hf alloys as well suited to check the Hf transformation temperature. niobirn,'' and molybdenum,22 whose activation energies correlate with the melting temperature and whose Do values follow Zener's predictions.28 We have no quarrel with Hagel's placing chromium into the second group; we disagree with his interpreting our data to make uranium fit into that group. Hagel considers that the measurements of self-diffusion in uranium below about 950°C represent combined volume and grain boundary diffusion. This contention is based on the curvature of the penetration plot for our 891°C run,4 which also has a nearly straight line plot of log c vs x. Hagel has extrapolated these characteristics to our 803.5C run and fitted his Arrhenius plot for self-diffusion in y uranium to our four highest temperature points only. We think this is wrong for the following reasons.

A techno-economic assessment for the recovery of several elements from seawater is presented. Gold recovery has been used as an illustration for the economic evaluation of several processes. Current technology does not present any economically viable alternative to recover gold from seawater because its concentration is several magnitudes too low. However, with the increasingly larger availability of concentrated seawater, mainly from desalination and other processes, coupled with advances in technology, especially genetically modified specific microorganisms, may make the recovery of gold and other desired elements from seawater a reality in the near future.

In 1888 the writer had the honor of submitting to the Institute a paper on " Steel Rails and Specifications for their Manufacture."* In his judgment the specifications were sufficient for "that day and generation." In that paper I said: '' The first duty falls upon the railroad engineer in designing his section. If that is bad, the steel-maker will be heavily handicapped in trying to furnish a satisfactory rail. I suppose it is hopeless to expect the adoption of standard sections."

September steel production established a new record for a 30-day month with 9,034,000 tons. It was the highest of any month since March. Output of ingots and steel for castings was 535,000 tons more than was poured in August 1952, and 373,000 tons over the total for September 1951. Prime Minister Daniel F. Malan touched a gold button to start South Africa' a first uranium plant into production on the premises of the West Rand Consolidated Gold Mine, near Krugersdorp, Transvaal, 25 miles west of Johannesburg. Uranium oxide is being extracted from mine tailing after removal of the gold. Thirteen gold mines in the region are scheduled for uranium production. Defense Materials Procurement Agency signed an agreement-with the Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad. Ariz., for expansion of the firm's facilities to enable delivery of at least 27 million lb of copper a year and 91,0000 lb of molybdenite. It is said that the company will spend about E million on the expansion.

For relative gravity measurements, the author in 1918 described an instrument1 of which the essential part consists of a highly astatized, standing pendulum turning about a horizontal elastic axis. This type of instrument has been used recently in practical field work, therefore a description of its principle and technical development is given herein. Part I, describing the principle, is a direct translation of the original Swedish paper.l Part II gives an account of the practical elaboration of the instrument, together with some description of measurements performed. I. Principle of Using Astatized Pendulums1 In order to reduce the trouble and waste of time attending the use of ordinary pendulums in measuring the force of gravity, various instruments of another type have been suggested for relative determinations, as a rule arranged in such a way that the attraction of the earth on a certain body or mass of fluid is balanced by elastic force from a spring or a shut-in mass of gas. A change in the force of gravity is then made manifest as a change in the position of equilibrium of the body, in that the deformation of the spring (or compression of the gas) is changed. With such instruments there are, however, great difficulties in keeping the elastic force constant or its variation known with sufficient exactitude, because of elastic after-working, influence of temperature, and so on. The author suggests for relative determinations of gravity another type of instrument, in which two directional forces (control coefficients) rather than two forces are compared with one another. By "directional force" or "control coefficient" is meant that quantity in a rotatable system that, multiplied by the angle of deflection, indicates the moment counteracting the deflection. In this way it will be possible greatly to reduce the influence of the elastic after-working, which in instruments with spring devices acts so disturbingly. ThIS discussion describes a method for the addition of small amounts of oxygen to columbium (niobium) in an accurate and reproducible manner. The method is based on the complete reduction by columbium of a carefully weighed amount of another metal oxide. The equilibrium Pq associated with Cb-CbO mixtures is extremely low, e.g., 10"25 atm at 100O°C, and the pressures over Cb-0 solutions are even lower. The equilibrium Pq associated with a given metal-metal oxide mixture can be easily obtained, with the aid of a Richardson-Jeffes chart.' Although columbium should effectively reduce almost any metal-metal oxide combination, the proper choice of a metal-metal oxide system is complicated by the low rate of oxygen transport in the gas phase at low oxygen pressures and the difficulty in reducing any columbium suboxide formed during the reduction of the oxygen source material. Thermodynamically, oxide formation on columbium will be avoided so long as the oxygen partial pressure over the columbium is below the equilibrium pressure associated with the mixture Cb-CbO. The logical choice of a source for oxygen would appear to be a mixture of Cb-CbO, since oxide formation would be precluded by nucleation difficulty. But calculations using the kinetic theory of gasses indicate that, for a temperature of 900°C, the reaction would proceed too JAMES D. FRANK T. SISCO is a native of Lawrence, Kansas. He received his earlier education in Clinton, Iowa and his university training at the University of Illinois. His experience in the steel industry has included service in the chemical, testing, and metallurgical departments of the Illinois Steel Co., of South Chicago; the Hess Steel Corp., of Baltimore; the IJ. S. Naval Ordnance Plant at Charleston, W. Va.; and the American Steel and Wire Co., Waukegan, Ill. He severed for seven years as chief of the metallurgical laboratories of the U. S. Army Air Corps at Wright Field, Dayton, before coming to New York in 1930 to become metallurgist and editor of the Alloys of Iron Research, the position he now holds.
