When I began my career (the first assignment was mucking the "drainage" ditch) an experienced miner told me, "Remember son, happiness is a journey, not a destination. . . ." If you missed the 100th Anniversary of AIME in New York this year, you are missing the journey. There are not enough superlatives to describe the event. Especially since New York is "known to have it all." An Indefinable Plus There was a little something different at this meeting. I cannot explain what, but there seemed to be more of everything. There were more wives there this year-what a pleasure to see all the lovely women mingling through the conference- which was reflected through our own attire and mannerisms. In fact, everyone looked so great, we checked to see if it really was a convention of miners. You wives keep coming to all of the events, because so much is added by your presence.

Definite transition behavior was found in unalloyed titanium at 0.13 pct 0 equivalent. The addition of 0.5 Sn, 1.0 Al, 0.5 Al, and 1.0 Sn lowers the tvansition temperature of titanium at oxygen equivalents exceeding 0.22, 0.29, 0.40, and 0.51, respectively. Metallographic evidence indicates that progressive amounts of oxygen restrict deformation at low temperatures resulting eventually in brittle fracture. The presence of tin or aluminum is thought to alter the atomic distribution of oxygen within the titanium lattice in such a manner as to facilitate some degree of slip and twinning. 1 ITANIUM-like iron and zinc experiences a transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature. The presence of sufficient quantities of the interstitial elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in solid solution, has been shown to progressively lower the room-temperature impact resistance of titanium with increasing interstitial content.1"1 Ogden,et al,2 reported finding no transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature in iodide titanium. However, a definite transition was found to occur at 0.36 pct 0 equivalent in an alloy containing 0.47 pct carbon in solid solution. The oxygen equivalent in this case was obtained by assuming the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in combination on the impact properties of titanium to be additive on the same basis as their separate effects on tensile strength, namely: Oe = 2/3 (pct C) + pet 0 + 2 (pet N) They concluded that the tendency toward transition behavior is dependent on the total interstitial content in solid solution and not on any one particular interstitial element. Rennhack,4 however, recently found transition behavior in iodide titanium at an oxygen equivalent of 0.17 pct. Ogden, etal3, reported that the strengthening effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in titanium decrease with the addition of tin. They showed that tin additions increase the tolerance of titanium for the interstitials, that is, 10 pct Sn permitted individual additions of up to 0.4 wt pct of the interstitial elements without any significant loss in ductility. Aluminum tends to decrease ductility and impact strength of titanium for a given interstitial ~ontent.3 Van Thyne and Kessler5 found that the solid solubility of carbon in titanium doubled in the presence of 10 pct Al. The precise effects of tin and aluminum in the nrespncp of rorvfen nn the impact properties of titanium had previously not been determined. The high oxygen tolerance of titanium containing tin may provide a suitable means for improving the impact properties of titanium containing the interstitial elements, particularly oxygen. Unlike tin, however, aluminum has a high affinity for oxygen and will reduce rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)by a thermit-type reaction.6 Thus, the atomic distribution of oxygen in titanium might be different in the presence of aluminum. The present work was undertaken to: 1) Determine the effect of oxygen on the transition behavior of unalloyed iodide titanium. 2) Determine the effect of small amounts of tin and aluminum on the transition behavior of iodide titanium in the presence of oxygen and other interstitial~. EXPERIMENTAL Three different lots of iodide titanium were employed to prepare the alloys studied in the present work. Their chemical composition is presented in Table I. The compositions of the tin and aluminum used for alloying are shown in Table 11. Oxygen additions were made using calcined rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)of 99.7 pct purity. ONLY a limited amount of information has been published on the effect of thorium as an alloying ingredient in magnesium. McDonald13'2 showed that the addition of thorium in amounts up to 3 pct increases significantly both the ductility and the strength of rolled magnesium sheet. A recent publication by Sauerwald" indicates that thorium contributes strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures to magnesium in both the cast and wrought states. The observations of Sauerwald are confirmed in this paper, which presents the results of a systematic study of the effects of compositional variation on the tensile properties, creep resistance, conductivity, density, and metallography of Mg-Th alloys containing up to 50 pct Th both in the sand-cast and in the extruded states. The effect of the addition of cerium to Mg-Th alloys is also reported. Experimental Methods The alloys studied in this investigation were pre.pared in small laboratory melts according to the melting practice described by Nelson4 as the crucible method. Electrolytic magnesium was used as the starting material to which the thorium* was introduced in metallic form. It was observed that the behavior of thorium in molten magnesium with respect to reaction with protective fluxes is similar to that of rare-earth metals. In order to obtain the highest possible alloying efficiency, it is necessary to use non-MgC1, fluxes and to apply all the precautions described by Marande6 for melting, alloying, and casting magnesium-rare-earth alloys. .Under these conditions it is possible to obtain an alloying efficiency in the range of 85 to 95 pct. The Mg-Th-Ce alloys were made with cerium of the highest purity available, not with the commercial product "misch-metal" which contains approximately 50 pct Ce. The total rare-earth content of this material was 97.1 pct, of which 0.3 pct was rare-earth metals other than cerium; the major impurities comprising the balance were iron and magnesium. The thorium and cerium contents of each alloy were determined chemically. Test bars 6% in. long with a 2% in. long reduced section of % in. diam were cast in sand molds using a four-baf pattern. In most cases, a 3 in. diam extrusion billet 10 in. long was cast in a steel mold from the same melt used for making the sand-cast test bars. For the higher thorium alloys, it was necessary to remelt the foundry scrap from the test bars in order to make the extrusion billets. The billets were scalped to a diameter of 2 15/16 in. and the ends faced to a length of 9% in. as limited by the size of the extrusion container. The alloys were extruded into % in. diam rod on a 500-ton direct-extrusion press. The details of the extrusion process are as follows: Billet preheat 925°F (2 to 16 hr) Container temperature 900 °F Die temperature 900°F Extrusion speed 10 ft per min Reduction ratio 36:1 Percent reduction 97.3 Alloys containing up to 10.2 pct Th were preheated at 925°F for 2 hr; all alloys with higher thorium contents were preheated for 16 hr. THE hardness anisotropy of metals and alloys has been of increasing interest in recent years but silicon ferrite,1 niobium,2 and tungsten3,4 are the only bcc metals about which this type of information has been reported. This investigation was carried out on vanadium and chromium single crystals in an effort to determine to what degree the hardness variations observed in these metals are due to orientation effects and to compare their behavior with other bcc metals. In earlier work the authors had observed a small angular dependence in the Diamond Pyramid Hardness of single crystalline vanadium on the (100) plane but no anisotropic effects were noted on either the (110) or (111) planes. At the suggestion of R. G. wheeler5 it was decided to investigate this effect in greater detail using the more asymmetric Knoop indentor. The vanadium metal used in the study was prepared by the aluminothermic reduction of V2O5 followed by electron beam melting.6 The principal analyzed impurities were 230 ppm C, 230 ppm O, 65 ppm N, 90 pprn Al, Cr not detected, 50 ppm Fe, 60 ppm Ni, and 200 ppm Si. The chromium was an iodide-refined product obtained from the Chromalloy Corporation. Analysis of this material showed the following amounts of impurities present: 10 ppm C, 9 ppm O, 2 ppm N, 0.4 ppm H, 3 ppm Al, 2 ppm Ca, 2 ppm Cu, 20 ppm Fe, 1 ppm Mg, 0.3 ppm Mn, 1 ppm Mo, 3 ppm Ni, 10 ppm Si, and 1 ppm V. Single crystals of both metals about 1 cm in diam and 10 cm in length were grown by an arc-zone melt- ing technique.7 The chromium crystal was annealed at 1600°C for 6 hr in a purified argon atmosphere to remove any strains or inhomogeneities, but the vanadium was tested in the as-grown condition. The crystals were oriented by the Laue back-reflection method and then sectioned with a spark cutter into individual specimens with a (loo), (110), or (111) plane parallel to the crystal surface. They were mounted in Lucite and carefully ground to a flat surface. The vanadium specimens were then electropolished in a 6 pct perchloric acid-methanol mixture while the chromium specimens were mechanically polished on a Syntron vibratory polisher using an alumina abrasive. The orientation of each crystal was then rechecked by the back-reflection X-ray method. All of them were found to lie within 2 deg of the desired orientation with the exception of the (110)-Oriented chromium crystal which was within 4 deg. Microhardness impressions were taken at 10 deg intervals from the common (110) direction by rotating the crystal in the plane of the crystal surface. A Knoop indentor was used with a 400-g load on the vanadium crystals and an 800-g load on the chromium. The hardness values are averages of 6 impressions and standard deviations were calculated for each set of data. The values reported for the (111) plane of vanadium are based on from 10 to 15 measurements for each point. Drill pipe, and the connections used to join the pipe together, have had a long history of development and improvement. With the growing use of high tensile-strength pipe, the rotary shouldered connections used to join the lengths of drill pipe have become more critical. Fatigue-type failures of rotary-shouldered connections, or tool joints, have become a cause of much conern to operators and manufacturers. Most fatigue tests on tool joints have been made on the basis of bending moment applied vs number of cycles, rather than on the basis of stress vs cycles. A desire to learn more about the nature of stress in a tool joint due to bending caused a rather intensive experimental study to determine what actually happens to cause fatigue failure. It was known that a tool joint with insufficient make-up torque was subject to early fatigue failure. Therefore, the establishment of the relationship between make-up torque and allowable bending moment would enable a testing engineer to better correlate the results of various tests. The problem of calculating the stress in a tool joint due to an applied bending moment was complicated by: the effect of unknown stress concentrations; the applicability of the well known formula S = Mc/I; and the question of whether to use the combined cross section of the pin and box in calculating the moment of inertia I. TEST EQUIPMENT The test equipment consisted of the following. 1. A lathe modified to act as a fatigue machine for full-size tool joint or drill-collar specimens. 2. An adapter plate bolted to the headstock of the lathe and into which a short adapter was screwed. 3. Tool-joint pins on sections of drill collars bucked into the adapter. 4. A hydraulic load cylinder which rested on the bed of the lathe and applied bending moments to the joints. 5. Paper-backed strain gauges (FAP-12-12, 1/8-in. gauge length and A-5-1, 1/2-in. gauge length). 6. Eastman 910 contact cement for bonding gauges to joint and Epoxylite 222 waterproofing. 7. A 12-position switchbox, SR-4 bridge balancing unit connected to an SR-4 strain indicator to read the gauge output. 8. A four-channel Sanborn recorder, Model 150, was used as the readout instrument for part of the testing. The fatigue machine was well suited as a loading device. Because of the long lever arm available, the change of moment with distance was small; consequently, the vertical shear stress was small, less than 300 psi. Some difficulty was experienced with the hydraulic load cylinder at high bending moments due to leakage. The strain gauge equipment was simple and quite reliable. A 41/2-in. extra hole (E. H.) joint with "as machined" threads and shoulders and a 2 7/8-in. internal flush (I. F.) joint with copper-plated threads and shoulders were selected for testing because of their common usage in the field. In addition, the 4 1/2-in. E. H. was suitable because it had an inside diameter large enough to permit the insertion and accurate positioning of strain gauges without using special jigs, while the 2 7/8-in. I. F. joint required much lower bending loads to cause separation of the shoulders of the joint when made up to the recommended torque. The idea of using water-only cyclones to scalp clean coal from the feed to other devices has recently been gaining in popularity. 1,2,6 An indication of this popularity is that water-only cyclone scalping is already employed in a few commercial plants. Water-only cyclones scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel in the Warwick plant,3 to Deister tables in the Rowland plant,4 and to a heavy media cyclone circuit in the Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant.5 Despite this trend, we found surprisingly little information in the literature on the performance of water-only cyclone scalping. Therefore, we undertook a study of its technical merits, limiting our investigation to a water-only cyclone scalper in conjunction with heavy-media cyclones. We felt this to be a reasonable combination of equipment, since both processes operate well on the same size coal. First, we developed simple mathematical relationships revealing general characteristics of the system. Next, we compared the clean coal yield and quality obtainable by the system on four different coals with that obtainable by heavymedia cyclone circuit alone and water-only cyclones middlings recirculation circuit alone. This was done by using computer program to simulate the operation of the three systems. Finally, we considered the effect that implementation of the system would have on a typical preparation plant circuit. The System The system chosen for study [(shown schematically in Fig. 1)] comprises two stages: a primary stage (PI) consisting of water-only cyclones, and a secondary stage (P2) consisting of heavy media cyclones. The water-only cyclones separate raw coal at a low specific gravity, producing a relatively small amount of high quality clean coal and a refuse containing much good coal. This refuse is then recleaned in the secondary stage, where the sharper separation of heavy media cyclones, operated at a higher specific gravity, reclaims additional clean coal. Finally, the clean coal from both stages is combined as the system's clean coal, while the refuse from the secondary stage becomes the system's refuse output. Theoretical Analysis Two assumptions lie behind the following theoretical analysis. The first assumption is that partition curves can represent not only the performance of each stage but also the performance of the system as a whole. These curves show partition number as a function of specific gravity, where partition number is either the percent or fraction of a raw coal with a given specific gravity reporting to clean coal. The second assumption is that these curves are independent of the raw coal characteristics. At any specific gravity the system's partition number is solely a function of the partition numbers of each stage. For convenience, we use the following variables in describing this relationship: g = specific gravity, PS(g) = the partition number of the system at specific gravity g, P1(g) = the partition number of the primary stage at specific gravity g, P2(g) = the partition number of the secondary stage at a specific gravity g. For this system, we can show algebraically that the relationship is: [Ps (g) = PI (g) + (1- P1(g)) P2 (9)(1)] With this equation the system's partition curve can be determined if the partition curves of each stage are known. By definition, the partition numbers P1(g) and P2(g) must each be less than, or equal to, one. Placing these constraints on Eq. (1), we arrive at the relations: [Ps(g) % P1(g) and Ps(g) % P2(g)(2)] Thus, at any specific gravity the system's partition number is always greater than that of both stages. ONE of the principal impurities in all steels is sulphur. Sulphur-bearing, manganese-free steels exhibit hot shortness. Manganese is added to steel to improve the hot-working properties. If no sulphur were present in steel, it is probable that hot shortness would be nonexistent. This paper is the first of a series to be issued by this Laboratory reporting the measurements of hot forgeability tests and the physical properties of Fe-C alloys to which additions of various alloying elements have been made. The present paper describes the results- obtained by the addition of varying amounts of sulphur to Fe-C alloys. To obtain control over residual elements in the various charges melted in the arc furnace, it was considered advantageous to use sponge iron from one source as the melting stock rather than scrap metal having an unknown history. Small amounts of unwanted alloying elements might be introduced into the charge when scrap was used, thereby influencing the results of the various heats. A sponge iron having a high silica-lime ratio was used. Ore from Sunrise, Wyo., had been reduced to sponge iron and briquetted at the Bureau of Mines sponge-iron plant at Laramie, Wyo. The briquettes were 5 in. in diam and 2 to 3 in. in thickness, and weighed about 10 lb each. The chemical analysis of the sponge iron is as follows: C, 0.67 pct; Mn, 0.10; SiO2, 4.75; CaO, 1.4; P, 0.044; S, 0.72; MgO, 0.4; A12O3, 1.1; total Fe, 87.5; Fe metallic, 79.2; and reduction, 90.5 pct. Where a reducing agent was required, crushed graphite electrodes usually were used. The charcoal available contained 0.20 pct S. An analysis of the available coke showed it to contain 0.70 pct S. Where high sulphur heats were required, elemental sulphur additions were made to the ladle. Limestone of good quality was obtained locally and had the following analysis: CaO, 53.7 pct; MgO, 0.8; ignition loss, 42.4; R2O3, 0.2; SiO2, 3.0; and P2O5, 0.014. Melting Procedure Sponge iron was melted to produce metal stock for the experimental alloys in a silica-lined, three-phase, direct-arc, size ST, Moore Rapid Lectromelt furnace with a 500 kva rating. Fig. 1 shows this furnace installation. About 25 tons of sponge iron was melted in 75 heats, averaging 927 lb of sponge iron to the heat. An addition of carbon was required to complete the reduction of a portion of the iron oxide remaining in the sponge to prevent high losses of iron oxide in the slag and a low carbon content in the resulting metal. As reducing agents in preparing the melting stock, charcoal, coke, and a carbon product resulting from the thermal decomposition of natural gas were used. The quantity varied from 20 to 60 Ib per furnace charge, with an average of 38 lb. An average analysis of the metal obtained gave 0.52 pct C, about 0.01 pct Mn, 0.070 pct P, and 0.092 pct S. The average yield of metal was 647 lb with 241 1b of slag, the sponge-iron recovery being 70 pct. The metal obtained in melting the sponge iron was cast into pigs weighing about 20 lb each to facilitate recharging into the furnace for further refining. The pouring of the pigs is shown in Fig. 2. The average power consumption for the production of the 24 tons of metal obtained was 1704 kw-hr per ton.

Pressure has been maintained in the Elk Basin Ten-deep reservoir since the initiation of inert gas injection in Sept., 1949. Oil is being produced under conditions favorable for gravity drainage, including high angle of dip, appreciable structural closure, and fairly good per~neability. Results being obtained are high per cent recovery of oil-in-place, sustained field productivity, reduced operating problems, and recovery of plant products. The high recovery has been calculated by alpplication of the gravity drainage theory described in an earlier AIME paper.' It is also confirmed from field performance by comparing nil recovery to date with gas cap spuce voided. GENERAL INFORMATION The Elk Basin field lies in Park County, Wyo., and Carbon County, Mont., approximately 50 miles east of Yellowstone Park. Located at the northern end of the Big Horn Basin. the field is situated on an elongated asymmetrical anticline (Fig. 1). The pressure maintenance project covered by this paper involves the Embar-Tensleep reservoir in this multi-pay field. Discovered in Nov., 1942, it has a proved productive area of over 6,300 acres. It consists of the 210-ft thick Tensleep sandstone of Pennsylvanian Age overlain by 40 ft of Embar dolomite of Permian Age. The two formations apparently are in communication with each other and are produced as a common source of supply. As 98 per cent of the reserves are contained in the Tensleep sandFtone, in this paper the Embar-Tensleep reservoir will he called simply the Tensleep. The reservoir is found at an average depth of 4,900 it, is approximately 7 miles long and 2 miles wide, and has a maximum oil productive closure of 2,330 ft. The strata dip an average of 21" on the west flank and 45" on the east. There are presently 132 Tensleep wells in the field drilled on 40-acre spacing; of these, 17 are shut in because of high gas-oil ratio (GOR) and eight are gas injection wells. Rock characteristics and related information for the pay section follow: Porosity, avg 10.7 per cent Permeability (air) from cores, avg 118 mds Permeability from PI'S 91 mds Connate water, avg 8 per cent Initial pressure (-400 ft) 2,234 psia Pressure April 1954 (-400 ft) 1.327 psia At high structural positions much of the better sandstone has connate water content of only 2 to 5 per cent as indicated by the coring of wells with oil in nearby Tensleep fields. In special imbibition tests, samples readily imbibed oil but repelled water. In tests on crushed samples, the sand grains rapidly settled in oil and carbon tetrachloride but formed a stable unsinking floc in water. This information indicates that the Tensleep sand is preferentially oil wet. The oil produced averages 29' API gravity and has a high sulfur content. Extensive sampling and testing have established the fact that characteristics of reservoir oil in this field vary greatly with structure, see Fig. 2. Additional detail on the variation of oil characteristics with structure at Elk Basin may be found in Reference 2. At original reservoir pressure the oil was undersatu-rated with gas, the bubble point being 1,250 psi at the crest but only 500 psi at the lowest elevation sampled. As noted on Fig. 2, other fluid properties—reservoir volume factor. solution ratio, gravity, viscosity, and hydrogen sulfide content—likewise vary greatly. These variations complicate mathematical analysis, for it is necessary to average these characteristics in order to enter them into reservoir engineering expressions. To further complicate analysis, sand-face pressure also varies greatly because of the increase in fluid head down structure. As an approximation, average properties under initial conditions may be read from Fig. 2 at the -450-ft elevation.

A great deal of speculation, as well as actual experiment, has been devoted to ascertaining the changes in the materials (luring their descent in an iron blast-furnace, affecting (1) the chemical constitution, (2) the mechanical condition, and (3) the arrangement of the materials. With a view to throw some light upon the third question, we constructed a model and tried experiments which are here described. Our model is a vertical section of a furnace, with the lines of the Edgar Thomson furnace D of 1885 for the use of which we arc indebted to Mr. Gayley. The model is 40 inches high, and made to scale (1/2 inch equals 1 foot), and the horizontal section of the space through which the charge falls at any point in the descent is 11/2 in. x d, d being the diameter of the furnace at that place. Speech advocating a new law of the sea-the "common heritage of mankind." The 3rd Law of the Sea (L0S) Conference was held in Caracas in mid-1974, and a fourth UN conference, scheduled for mid-March in Geneva, will once again attempt to produce a cohesive LOS Convention to take up where the 1958 Geneva Convention left off. The 1958 Convention specified coastal state resource rights on a continental shelf out to a water depth of 200 m-a supposed technological limitation at the time. But the surge of offshore petroleum drilling and the advent of the nodule resource have long since exploded beyond the 200-m limit.

To the question, " Do the Pennsylvania anthracites contain phosphorus?" asked at the last meeting of the Institute during the discussion on the metallurgical value of Western lignites, I can now give a definite answer. Through the kindness of a gentleman connected with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and another connected with one of the principal ironworks on the Lehigh, there was sent to the Ironmasters' Laboratory a number of samples of the coals now largely shipped from the Schuylkill and Lehigh regions. This piece of Carpenter crucible steel has exhibited a tensile strength of 116,000 pounds per square inch, an elastic limit of 89,170 pounds, an elongation of 25 per cent., and a reduction in area of 42 per cent. The test-specimen had a length of 2 inches between fillets, and was an inch bar reduced to an area of 0.504 square inch. This unusual tensile strength was determined before the bar had been hardened so as to show the remarkably velvety fracture here exhibited; but a piece of the same, tested after hardening, is reported to have stood a stress of 214,000 pounds per square inch. Another test-piece is said to have shown 136,000 pounds tensile strength, 97,300 pounds elastic limit, 20 per cent. elongation in 2 inches, and 40 per cent. reduction of area. Mr. Carpenter claims that this steel, containing 2.27 per cent. chromium and 1.04 per cent. carbon, can be welded like iron, and has proved most desirable,for the highest class of die-steel.

.I. S. Huckaba (Western Machinery Co., Spokane, Wash.)—It has been my pleasure and privilege to be able to follow this work with the H.M.S. pilot plant very closely. This has been a very thorough and painstaking piece of work and will be of great value to the dense-media operators and manufacturers. Unfortunately time was not available to make an accurate comparison between this pilot plant and the commercial plant at Bellingham Coal Mines, both plants having Wemco drum separators. Briefly I would like to point out what I consider the most interesting finding of this work. Capacity: Very good results were obtained at a feed mte of 5.2 tons per hr in a 30-in diam by 24-in. long drum separator. The maximum capacity of this drum is not known but it is something over 5.2 tons per hr for the available area of 2.08 sq ft. DuriKg the past two or three years I have seen statements regarding the first discovery of fullers' earth in this country that seem to require correction or modification. One appears again in the Mineral Resources of the United States for 1909, part II., p. 738, where it is said that 'fullers' earth was firat discovered in the United States at Quincy, Fla., in 1893." In this connection the following bit of unpublished history concerning fullers' earth in the State of Arkansas is worthy of attention. In April, 1891, when I was State Geologist of Arkansas, a Swede named John Olsen, formerly a copper-miner in Michigan, but then living south of Little Rock, brought me a sample of what he thought mas fullers' earth. He reported that it was from near the town of Alexander, the locality being 1 S. 13 W., section 8, SW. quarter of the SE. quarter. My chemist, Dr. R. N. Colloidal silica dissolved in aqueous suspensions of high surface area thoria was permitted to adsorb on the thoria surface. Silica in three forms was identified by means of infrared spectroscopy and characterized by Si-O vibrational modes in the 9.0 to 10.5 region. A band at 9. 1 was attributed to free unad-sorbed silica, while adsorbed silica resulted in bands of greatest absorbency at 9.4 or 10.3p, depending upon the character of the surface bonding. Size considerations, the amount of silica adsorbed, and the character of the infrared spectrum for strongly adsorbed silica has been interpreted as evidence of formation of chain or layer silica linkages on the thoria surface. Infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully in recent years for the identification of minerals and synthetic inorganic substances. Unfortunately, infrared studies of silicate minerals have not proceeded to the point that unambiguous assignments may be made for Si-O vibrational modes as affected by lattice substitutions and structures. Several investigators have presented infrared spectra of silicate minerals, 1,7 and their work has pointed to the potential value of infrared to identify minerals as well as to note the sensitivity of various Si-O modes to structural and substitutional environments. The strong infrared absorption of various Si-O vibrational modes makes the infrared method a very useful tool for the study of silica adsorbed on the surface of solids of high surface area. Spaepen et a18 studied the adsorption of silica on thoria surfaces from aqueous solutions of silicic acid up to 300°C. A general review of the application of the infrared method to the study of surface adsorption has been presented by Pliskin and Eischens.9 EXPERIMENTAL Du Pont colloidal silica, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) and Ludox HS (30.25% SiO2) in aqueous suspensions were used as the sources of silica for the adsorption studies. The thoria used for this study was supplied by Union Carbide Nuclear Co.* under the preparation *Chemical Technology Div., Union Carbide Nuclear Co., Oak Ridge, Tenn. . number D-16-650. It was fired from the oxalate at 650°C and had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 m2 per g measured by nitrogen adsorption. The chemical analysis of the D-16 thoria in ppm was: CO3= (5500), NO3- (< 4), so4±PO4 (100), and Si (20). The Ludox silica was placed in contact with the thoria in a two-liter autoclave10 between room temperature and 250°C. Slurries were made by placing 1 g of thoria in one liter of distilled water containing various additions of the silica sol. Samples were removed from the autoclave by opening a small stainless steel valve. Extracted samples were centrifuged for 10 min and excess solution was decanted. The sample was then dried for several hours at 80°C. Infrared samples were prepared by thoroughly mixing 10 mg of the thoria with 400 mg KBr in polystyrene vials on a "Wig-L-Bug" amalgamator. The room temperature flow characteristics of a series of Cu-Cr alloys are found to be related to the amount and characteristics of the chromium-rich precipitate. The results are consistent with the theory of Fisher, Hart, and Pry, which considers the trapping to dislocation loops around precipitate particles. THE use of dispersed phases for hardening metals, particularly high temperature alloys, has been practiced for several years. Current theories describing the effects of dispersions on the basis of dislocation theory have been proposed by Mott and Nabarro.l-4 rowan," and Fisher, Hart, and Pry.8 These theories recently have been discussed by Hart,&apos; who pointed out that the experimental data available for comparison with theoretical calculations for overaged alloys are confined to studies by Gensamer, Pearsall, Pellini, and Low,8 Shaw, Sher-by, Starr, and Dorn,9 and some hitherto unpublished data on Cu-Cr alloys which will be described herein. Certain difficulties were associated with the interpretation of the first two studies. Gensamer, Pearsall, Pellini, and Low were concerned principally with interparticle spacing and did not document particle sizes. Shaw, Sherby, Starr, and Dorn included all the data in their report which was necessary for the theoretical evaluation, but their study is subject to some question1" due to difference in prior history of various specimens and due to systematic differences in particle characteristics" which appeared to be associated with differences in the magnification of their microscopic examination. The current study was undertaken to obtain critical data in a manner which avoids some of these limitations. Specimens of eight Cu-Cr alloys remaining from a previous investigation&apos;&apos; were available in the form of 100 mil sheet of the compositions shown in Table I. At 200 mil this material had been previously an- nealed ½ hr at 1000°C, water quenched, and cold rolled 50 pct. Samples were further cold rolled to a thickness of 20 mil for a total reduction of 90 pct. Sheet tensile specimens of standard geometry with a gage length 2½ in. long and 0.20 in. wide were machined from this sheet. These specimens were then annealed in a dried N2-H2 atmosphere for the times and temperatures indicated in Table I. This anneal served two purposes: 1—to obtain a fairly uniform and nearly constant grain size of 0.015 to 0.022 mm average diameter, and 2—to precipitate a fairly uniform, nearly spherical over-aged dispersion of essentially pure chromium. A typical microstructure illustrating the grain size and the uniformity of the dispersion is shown in Fig. 1. A typical dispersion illustrating the range of sizes and shapes of the particles is shown in Fig. 2. The tensile specimens were tested in the Instron equipment described in ref. 11 at room temperature at a strain rate of 0.04 in. per in. per min. Three tests were run on each alloy with sufficient repro-ducibility that a single true stress-true plastic strain curve could be drawn through the three sets of data for each alloy. E. T. Turkdogan (British Iron & Steel Research Assoc., London, England)—I would like to suggest a different method for the treatment of the authors&apos; data on the Si-0 equilibrium in liquid iron. Because the activity coefficient of silicon dissolved in iron is influenced by the concentration of silicon as well as that of oxygen, the equilibrium constant K2 of reaction 2 becomes a function of metal composition, and, as shown in Fig. 1, a plot of log KP1 at 1600°C against the weight percent of silicon gives a smooth curve. A second generation tailings system, consisting of 8 km (5 mile) of large diameter 914- mm (36-in.) po1yethylene pipeline, the bulk of which was laid on a 0.2% grade, has been successfully operated by Lornex Mining Corp. for the past 2 yr. The system was designed to operate as a partial flow pipeline during average flows with the ability to pressurize itself and operate as a pressure pipeline under high flows, or clean itself out under sanding conditions. The system has exceeded design capacity and has had very little downtime. Polyethylene pipe was easily and inexpensively installed and has exhibited superior abrasion resistance characteristics.
