The early development of the reverberatory furnace for smelting copper-ores was the work of the Welsh smelters, particularly those of Swansea. The first record of a reverberatory furnace is made by Jars, who states that in 1755 copper-smelting was effected .in reverberatory furnaces at Middleton-Tyas, in Yorkshire, England. The first patent, of any importance, for improvements in reverberatory furnaces was granted to Thomas Williams in 1778 for the granulation of the regulus. The next was that of William Evetts, in Sheffield, in 1812, for the cooling of the fire-bridge by the admission of air. Charge-hoppers above the furnaces were in common use in 1848. The size of the hearth of the furnaces about the beginning of the 19th century was commonly 11 by 8 feet. No material development was made until the Welsh process mas brought to Colorado, where Richard Pearce, as manager of the Argo works, near Denver, developed the furnace to meet the requirements of a custom plant, under keen competition with lead-silver smelting-plants, using blast-furnaces. His improvements are outlined in Fig. 1, elaborated by permission from E. D. Peters's excellent work,' to which the reader is referred for further details. This figure shows that the furiiaces were in 1878, 9 ft. 8 in. by 15 ft. in hearth; and in 1894, 16 by 35 ft., while the capacity of the furnace had been increased from 12 tons per 24 hr. to 50 tons in the same period.

Six months out of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut down a multi-million dollar plant besieged with -40°F temperatures and a 40 mph wind. It takes only one man-door improperly latched to feeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later, the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Some important things must be remembered in plant design for cold and remote areas. For one thing, everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore be kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas, on the other hand, must be adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles, for instance, have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50°F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze UP.

Any annual review of engineering progress in petroleum refining must of necessity include many features mentioned in earlier reviews. Advances do not spring mushroom fashion to wide acceptance overnight, but rather resemble rolling snowballs, gathering size and velocity as they progress. The new ideas of one year develop through the course of scattered adoption and testing during following years, to be ultimately discarded or to become an integral part of refinery engineering and operation. Polymerization and Cracking As an illustration, the publicity given to the polymerization and cracking of petroleum gases during the year has given many the impression that this is a new art. But patent and technical literature have disclosed active work on the problem dating back a decade or more and a unit capable of making 100 bbl. a day of polymer gasoline was constructed as early as 1930. Important strides have been made during 1935 looking to the more general commercialization of available processes, and some four important groups are furthering this work. In addition to the production of liquid products for inclusion as a constituent of commercial motor fuel, polymerization has also been a factor leading to the installation of a plant at the Houston refinery of The Shell Petroleum Corporation for manufacturing isooctane for aviation use, by making available dibutylene for catalytic hydrogenation Polymerization is not confined to unsaturated hydrocarbon gases as a source of raw material, and has been extended to include a preliminary decomposition of normal saturated gases under suitable heat and pressure conditions into the unsaturated types, which can then be used as raw material for the polymerization process. Thus there is opened up the possibility of eventually using large quantities of natural gas in the manufacture of high-grade motor fuels, although the early commercial growth will be largely on cracking still gases for economic reasons. It is a rare work of art that attains the proportions of a major construction project. One instance of such a phenomenon is Bartholdi's Miss Liberty, which was designed and built section by section in Paris and then erected in New York Harbor. Another is Borglum's massive presidential quartet hewn from the granite of Mount Rushmore. Now, however, there is a new monument in the making which will completely dwarf all others. The sculptor of this supercolossus is Korczak Ziolkowski, a colorful, bearded genius who assisted Borglum on Mount Rushmore and is now carving his own granite masterpiece from Thunderhead Mountain near Custer, S. D., just ten crow-flight miles away from Rushmore.

DURING the last half century a great amount of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-clay to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes : The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the buddies and round tables on the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

Rockbolting and dowelling are important methods of ground control. Their effectiveness depends upon the compatibility of the support members and the geotechnical behaviour of the rock mass. Detailed geotechnical investigations are, therefore, necessary for the design of effective rockbolting systems. The study described in the paper was concerned with improving the effectiveness of ground control at Mount Isa Mine. The paper briefly reviews the design methods avail- able when choosing a rockbolting system with a view to identifying the most suitable method. Joint surveys were used for the geotechnical assessment of rock mass stability. These were interpreted with the aid of the stereographic technique of predicting the size and shape of potentially unstable blocks of rock in both the roof and side walls of excavations. The geology and ground conditions at Mount Isa are briefly described together with the current ground control techniques. The requirements for ground control have been investigated at representative sites by analysing typical modes of rock failure and using a geological predictive technique. An application of this technique to the selection of a support system in a shallow Coal Measures tunnel is also described. The paper concludes with a general discussion on the effectiveness of this method of site investigation for the appraisal of rockbolting support in mining and civil engineering excavations.

As. part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.1 Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in. more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equip-ment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel sam-ples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collect-ing the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative determination.

Various semiempirical equations which relate defect-formation energies and entropies with elastic and thermal properties of a metal crystal are shown to be related by a simple model for lattice energy. An illustrative comparison of theory with experiment is made using self-diffilsion data for fee metals. SEVERAL workers have related the free energy of defect formation with elastic and thermal properties of a crystal lattice, particularly elastic bulk modulus and Debye temperature. The present note shows how the various approaches are related by a simple model for lattice energy. Results and experimental procedures are presented covering a preliminary laboratory investigation of the compaction of reservoir rocks and its effect on porosity and permeability. "Egective" compressibility was measured by subjecting core material to an overburden load and reducing pore pressure. Preliminary results showed relatively high effective compressibilities which varied from 1.8 X 10-' pore volume/pore volume /lb / in.~ for limestones to 7.7 X 10-6 pore volume/pore volume/lb/in.' and even higher for sandstone reservoirs conmining large amounts of fine clay material. It appeared from the initiol results that the effective compressibility of the material could not be correlated directly with porosity and that other factors, such as the amount of clay material present might have to be taken into account. The work to date has indicated that effective compressibility factors will have to be measured for the particular reservoirs heing studied. Oil permeability of core materid was measured under various effective overburden loads from 0 to 8,000 psi. It has been found than reduction of permeability in clean sands was relatively small and the results agreed with published data. For sandstones containing large amounts of clay, preliminary tests indicated very large reductions in permeability with increasing effective overburden pressures. It is planned to continue laboratory work on this phase because of its importance in low-permeability reservoirs. INTRODUCTION During the past few years increasing interest has been shown in the differences obtained between conventional laboratory measurements on cores at atmospheric pressure and those when reservoir conditions are simulated. Since these data are used as the basis for calculations and the prediction of reservoir behavior, their evaluation under reservoir conditions is most important. The effect of the compressibility of the rock upon the reservoir behavior, as fluid pressure declines, is an important subject which has been insufficiently studied. The total pressure on any plane through a reservoir is the result of the grain-to-grain rock pressure due to the overburden and the pressure of the interstitial fluid on the plane. As reservoir fluid pressure declines, the net load on the rock phase must increase, and the result is the compaction of the rock structure which produces a decrease in pore volume. Simultaneously, the rock grains expand into the pore space as the fluid pressure declines. The result of these two effects is defined as the effective compressibility of the rock and is expressed in units of pore volume/original pore volume/psi. Work was started by Imperial in 1954 on the effects of pressure on the porosity of reservoir rock. These studies established effective compressibility factors for some limestones and dolomites. Since that time effective compressibilities have been obtained for other Canadian and some U. S. reservoir rocks. In conjunction with the study of porosity, an investigation has also been initiated to determine the effects of pressure on permeability. One outcrop and several reservoir sandstone cores have been tested to date. ROCK COMPRESSIBILITY Apparatus anD Procedure A diagram of the apparatus used in these studies is shown in Fig. 1. The equipment was constructed so that a uniform pressure, equivalent to the reservoir overburden, could be applied by the oil pump and transmitted on all sides of the core through the Lucite sheath. WHEN this country went into the war, but two concerns, The Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Midvale Steel and Ordnance Co., knew how to make steel fit for great cannons and at these concerns there were relatively few men who knew the whole art. Fortunately, certain of these men put their knowledge at the service of the Government, and proceeded to instruct the metallurgists at the arsenals and at various steel works. The then chairman of the Engineering Division of the National Research Council, Doctor Howe, suggested that this work might be facilitated, and the number of effective gun-steel makers thereby increased, if a detailed description of the best practice could be written, giving the reasons for the various steps, and issued with the endorsement of a committee composed of those who were evidently the most competent authorities. It was thought that something would be gained by clarification of the subject, and something by the eminent authority' of the members of the committee. To that end, the Engineering Division appointed-a committee, consisting of the gentlemen whose names follow, to mention only those who retained their connection with it. At, this time there were serious difficulties in the manufacture for the Government, of aircraft and high-speed engine crankshafts, of certain ordnance forgings, and of shells for both the Army and Navy. This Committee was asked to study and report upon these, with a view to betterment of practice. There were indications that the source of some of the difficulties went back to the melting of the steel and the production of the ingot. Hence, the committee first studied steel melting and ingot production, in order to guide the wartime manufacturers to an even larger percentage of useful production from the steel initially melted.

The injection of a hot liquid into initially cool porous media, saturated with the same liquid and surrounded by two impermeable but heat conducting media (cap and base rock), has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The temperature dependence of the viscosity was included in the theoretical model, but it was assumed that the specilic heats and densities of the various materials were independent of the temperature. Solutions to the theoretical model were approximated by numerical methods. Both theoretical and experimental results indicate that center-line temperatures are significantly higher than boundary temperatures. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results with a cold/hot viscosity ratio 01 19:1 were in reasonable agreement. Theoretical calculations show that the effect of the temperature dependence of viscosity was very significant at ratios of 100:l to 1000:1, which are typical of those that occur when injecting hot water to flood heavy oil reservoirs. INTRODUCTION We consider the problem of prediction of fluid flow and temperature distribution in an initially cold-fluid-filled reservoir on the injection of the same hot liquid by the use of mathematical and physical models. The results reported are for a two-dimensional rectangular section of the reservoir, as shown in Fig. 1. The injection and withdrawal faces are assumed to be equipotentials for fluid flow. The ultimate purpose of such models would be to predict hot-water injection performance. However, we note that in the work presented here, one of the most significant aspects of the problem — the instabilities resulting from two-phase, water and oil flow — is not included. We will not give a historical review, but refer instead to the paper of Spillette and Nielsen,1 which contains a rather complete bibliography and critical discussion. The physical problem is exactly the same as Spillette and Nielsen, except for certain simplifications in our assumptions. The mathematical details are somewhat different, and we will present the details of our method here. The mass flow equation, which is elliptic in character, is handled by successive overrelaxation. The heat flow equation, which is parabolic in character, is handled by a straightforward explicit approximation. Some difficulty arose in the over-all heat balance due to small errors in the solution of the mass flow equation, and we feel that a different formulation of the heat flow equation would be desirable for future work. In addition to the mathematical solutions for the temperature distributions in a porous medium due to the injection of hot liquids, experimental data are presented to check the validity of these solutions. A schematic diagram of the model is shown in Fig. 2. Certain qualitative physical conclusions were obtained from our numerical and experimental results. These are: 1. Assuming high (infinite) conductivity normal to the bedding plane in the reservoir is a poor approximation, and may lead to overestimates of the total heat losses (to cap and base rock) of as much as 50 percent. 2. More heat is retained in the reservoir (per unit of heat injected) for higher viscosity changes. 3. Any particular temperature isotherm moves more rapidly along the center line for higher viscosity changes. Consequently, the approximation of temperature independent viscosity is not suitable for obtaining quantitatively correct results. MATHEMATICAL MODEL Our mathematical model is that of a reservoir of thickness 2h. The problem is idealized from that of a linear hot-water drive, and we imagine that the input face is sufficiently far away from the injection wells that the stream lines enter it normally. This paper first discusses the feed terminal, the product that it must produce, and the reasons for coal cleaning. Then in the delivery terminal section, the various methods of dewatering the coal and some recent innovative ideas on bunkering the dewatered product and storing the dewatered coal in large outdoor piles are discussed.

Industrial minerals are becoming increasingly important in Colorado's mining industry, not only in production value but also in the variety available and in their potential development for both conventional and new uses. Fluorspar, building stone, fire clay, and pegmatite minerals have been historically important but are not now extensively mined. Aggregates (sand, gravel, and crushed stone), cement materials, metallurgical limestone, and common clays currently are the highest valued commodities. Those offering the greatest future potential include diamonds, nahcolite and dawsonite associated with oil shale, alunite, potash, zeolites, and rare earths.

Can the mining industry in the United States accept the change and challenge of the "Now Generation" of an entirely new high-performance automated transportation system? Advanced transportation systems for the mining industry can be defined as those which lend themselves to automation and meet definite performance and cost objectives. The term automation shall mean that control of transportation system is accomplished by a closed loop electronic circuit which, when started on command, will continue to cycle as programmed until such time as an intelligent feed-back causes the system to shut down.

The sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires, for given operating conditions, a greater average output, with improved product for subsequent processing, than can be obtained by manual control. Relation of Sound to Useful Grinding Energy Experience has taught us that there is a difference in character as well as in intensity of sound between a mill grinding wet and one grinding dry, in open or closed circuit, to obtain a coarse or fine product, on the same material, to say nothing of the effect with a variety of different materials. Broadly speaking, a wet-grinding mill operates best at a lower sound level than the same mill grinding dry, with other conditions the same. Several reasons for this variation in sound intensity under these conditions can be advanced, but the important point is that there is a difference, based upon practical results. Since these reasons may be more or less involved, and may be subject, to much discussion, only one will be considered here. It is apparent that two balls hitting together or a ball striking the lining, if there is no intervening material, will produce the maximum sound. If a complete cushion of material is placed between the balls or ball and liner, so that the energy is dissipated without doing useful work, the balls will be unable to create enough pressure or force to fracture the particles, and the sound will be at a minimum. At some point in between—that is, where there is sufficient material between the balls or ball and liner so that the ball will fracture the particles without mashing them unduly—the sound

Applications of mathematical statistics to the field of exploration are still relatively new. There are two primary reasons why little has been published in this field. First, if one discovers an effective technique for exploration, he does not like to disclose it. Second, the geologist needs to work closely with a mathematical statistician, and the communications barrier between the disciplines is formidable. The authors, one a geologist and the other a statistician, were interested in the economic benefit which appeared to be possible in the inter-disciplinary area they call "geostatistics."

Higher coal quality is being recognized in potentially lowering the cost of power as measured at the bus bar. Assessment of potential coal supplies for most power plants is now going beyond buying at the lowest delivered fuel cost. It is now taking into consideration other factors, such as handling, storage, pulverization cost, boiler fouling, post combustion cleanup, and waste disposal costs. New measurements of quality are being considered now by those producing and those consuming the fuel by assessing numerous variables in the total fuel cycle to achieve the lowest possible power costs.

I HAVE told you of two parts of the mould for guns. You lack the third, which is the one for making the breech. This, in addition to being a part that is always ornamented with some piece of sculpture to make the gun beautiful, is that part which forms the bottom and closes the whole mould. It is also the one that sustains the entire burden of the bronze, and it must therefore be made with great consideration and diligence, taking care to make it strong with clay and with iron bands. Various methods are used in making this. Every master does as he knows how, either preferring to do it quickly or delighting to make his work ornate and beautiful. His choice also depends on whether they are to be just artillery or occasions for artistry. There are some who, if the guns are of a round form, make the pattern for the breech on a lathe, either of wood or of clay. If they are fluted, they make the flutes by hand in wood or clay, following the pattern of the board. In a part that perchance might not come out of the mould, they put some tallow underneath or make it entirely of tallow or wax so that it will come out. Likewise, if they wish to make cornices or other projections these can be put on either in wood or in clay. In the same way they also apply leafwork of clay or wax so that it can be taken out by hand or with the fire.
