THIS paper gives the author's personal idea of the general viewpoint of the world's largest mica consumer, the U. S. Army, toward the supply, uses, and conservation of mica. However, to cover so broad a subject in a brief paper will require the dismissal of many phases with little or no mention. For example, it will be necessary to omit further reference to phlogopite or amber mica, even though amber block and splittings for certain spark plugs and commutator segments present some supply problems. This paper will deal entirely with muscovite, or white mica. MUSCOVITE MICA Muscovite mica is available commercially in four general forms; namely, as block mica, as splittings, as washer punch, and as scrap mica.1 No strategic importance is attached to washer punch and scrap mica, even though scrap has found some use in military construction and in electrical ceramics. The use of washer punch as such has fallen off with the non-manufacture of household electrical appliances. Some qualities of block mica are also of little or no interest, but other qualities of block mica and all splittings are considered of vital importance. Army equipment requires large amounts of muscovite mica splittings in the form of built-up mica commutator segments and coil insulation in motors and generators. Other military items using significant amounts of muscovite splittings are transformers, switchboards, and blasting apparatus. Flexible mica tape, made from bookform or loose-dusted splittings cemented to paper, linen, glass cloth, and other backing, is widely used in coil insulation in heavy electrical equipment and in aircraft generators. All muscovite mica splittings come from India, principally because of the enormous amount of hand labor required in their preparation. In this emergency, the need for them was anticipated and large industry and government stocks were on hand, while shipments have continued to come by sea in spite of wartime hazards. With the possible exception of certain bookform splittings, no trouble is anticipated in supply. Accordingly, the remainder of this paper is devoted to block (or sheet) muscovite mica, including condenser film that is split from block. THE MICA PROBLEM Block muscovite mica is commercially classified into the following general qualities, beginning with the best quality: I. Clear and Slightly Stained (C & SS). 2. Fair Stained (FS). 3. Good Stained (GS). 4. Stained (S). 5. Heavy Stained (HS). 6. Black Spotted. About ten years ago nepheline syenite was introduced to the ceramic industry and the material has now found application in the various branches of the industry, namely, as a vitrifying agent in white-wares and as a source of alumina and alkalies in glasses, glazes, and porcelain enamels. Spencel described the early mining and processing developments regarding this material. Since the time of his article many research papers have appeared relating to the usage of nepheline syenite but little has been published relative to subsequent mining and processing methods. A complete indexed review of the literature was issued recently by Ohio State University.2 Since "Lakefield" nepheline syenite from Blue Mountain, Ontario (Fig I); is the only commercial ceramic-grade nepheline syenite now being marketed on this continent, discussion is limited to this operation carried on by American Nepheline Limited, Lakefield, Ont., and its subsidiary in the United States, American Nepheline Cory. at Rochester, N. Y. The Deposit Blue Mountain is a long ridge rising to an elevation of about 350 ft at its highest point above the surrounding country and extending for about six miles in a northeasterly direction across Methuen township, Peterborough County. The rock of the Blue Mountain central alkaline intrusive is fine grained, light colored and of even granitic texture. The solidified mass consists predominately of the minerals albite, nepheline and microcline in order of abundance. The average mineralogical composition for the deposit obtained by a study of 112 samples taken regularly over the whole formation is as follows:3 Volumetric Mineral Per Cent Albite.................... 54 Microcline................ 20 Nepheline................ 22 Muscovite................ 2 Mafics.................... 2 (Biotite, hastingsite, magnetite) Total................... loo The mineral nepheline (or nephelite) belongs to the feldspathoid group but is lower in silica content than are the feldspars. It is a silicate of soda, potash, and alumina (NaKAl2O32SiO2). Its presence with albite (Na2oA12O3 6SiO2) and microcline (K2O A12O3 6SiO2) gives the Blue Mountain deposit an alkali content of 15 pct and an alumina content of approximately 24 pct. While this huge alkaline mass is somewhat variable mineralogically, it has a uniform chemical composition. When the iron, mostly in the form of magnetite, is removed during processing, a remarkably uniform finished product is obtained. Geological surveying has disclosed many million tons of nepheline syenite in the Blue Mountain deposit. Diamond drilling in the area where mining is now being carried out indicates a block of about one million tons.

Oxygen the present work on decavbuvization of liquid iron and previous studies on the kinetics of nitrogen absorption and desorplion are discussed in terms of the postulated mechanism, ManY of the early studies of rate of decarburization of liquid steel were of an exploratory nature and laboratory exppriments carried out pertained to open-hearth or oxygen steelmaking processes. References to previous work on this subject may be found in a literature survey made by Ward. Using more sophisticated experimental techniques, several investigators have recently studied the kinetics of decarburization of molten Fe-C alloys in oxygen-bearing gases. For example, Baker et al2.' reported their findings on the rate of decarburization of liquid iron, levitated by an electromagnetic field, in carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide-helium atmospheres. In these levitation experiments the samples used were small in size, e.g., -0.6-cm-diam spheres weighing -0.7 g, and the rates were measured for decarburization from about 5 to 1 pct C at 1660°C. The rates obtained under their experimental conditions were considered to be controlled primarily by gaseous diffusion through the boundary layer at the surface of the levitated melt. Parlee and coworkers3 measured the rate of absorption of carbon monoxide in liquid iron. The rates were found to follow first-order reaction kinetics, yielding a reaction velocity or a mass transfer coefficient in the range 0.2 to 0.4 cm per min. The coefficient was found to decrease with increasing carbon content of the melt. These investigators attributed the observed rates to the transfer of carbon or oxygen through the diffusion boundary layer adjacent to the surface of the melt. In the work to be reported in this paper, an attempt has been made to study the kinetics of gas-metal surface reactions involved in the decarburization of liquid iron. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments consisted of melting 80-g samples from an Fe-1 pct C master alloy in an induction furnace and decarburizing in controlled CO2-CO mixtures at 1 atm pressure and 1580°C. The master alloy was prepared by adding graphite to electrolytic "Plastiron" melted in racuo. None of the impurities in the master alloy exceeded 0.005 pct. The reacting gases were dried by passage through columns of anhydrone; in addition, CO2 impurity in carbon monoxide was removed by passage through a column of ascarite. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. A 1.25-in.-diam recrys-tallized alumina crucible containing the sample was placed inside a 3-in.-diam quartz reaction tube, all of which was surrounded by an induction coil. A 450-kcps induction generator was used as the power source. Water-cooled brass flanges, which contained the gas inlet, gas exit, and sight port, were sealed to the top of the reaction tube with epoxy resin. The reacting gases were metered with capillary flowmeters and passed through a platinum wire-wound alumina preheating tube, 0.25 in. ID and 11 in. long. The gases were preheated to about 1300°C. A disappearing-filament optical pyrometer was used to measure the melt temperature. The pyrometer was initially calibrated against a Pt-6 pct Rh/Pt-30 pct Rh thermocouple. The temperature was controlled to within +10°C by manually adjusting the power input to the induction coil. In a typical experiment, an 80-g sample of the master alloy was melted in a CO2-CO atmosphere having pcO2/pco = 0.02 and flowing at 1 liter per min. A negligible amount of carbon was lost and no significant reduction of alumina from the crucible occurred during melting, e.g., 0.005 pct Al in the metal. After reaching the experimental temperature of 1580°C, the gas composition was changed to that desired for a particular series of decarburization experiments. The duration of the transient period for obtaining the desired gas composition at the surface of the melt was about 20 sec . The flow rate of the reacting gas was maintained at 1 liter per min. After a predetermined reaction time, the power to the furnace was turned off. During freezing, which took about 10 sec, the amount of gas evolution was not sufficient to result in a significant loss of carbon. The samples were analyzed for carbon by combustion and in a few cases they were analyzed for oxygen by the vacuum-fusion method. RESULTS A marked increase in the rate of decarburization of iron with increasing pcO2/pco ratio in the gas stream is demonstrated by the experimental results given in Figs. 2 and 3 for pco2/pco ratios from 0.033 to 4.0. In one series of experiments, denoted by filled triangles in Fig. 2, the reacting gas was diluted with argon (48 vol pct) resulting in a slower rate of decarburization. Samples from two series of experiments with pco2/pco = 0.033 and pco2/pco = 0.10 (with argon dilufion) were analyzed for oxygen. In these Samples the oxygen content increased with reaction time

This paper is intended as a contribution to our knowledge of the mechanism of comminution and of the work of crushing. In a previous paper1 it was shown that with quartz comminution proceeds as follows: 1. The size distribution of broken fragments made by a single fracture is such that the new surface on each grade is the same. 2. Multiple fracturing results in a size distribution such that in the he sizes the surface per grade is the same in every grade; in coarse sizes the surface per grade decreases gradually with increasing size. In that paper it was mentioned that determinations on minerals other than quartz were in course of completion in order to establish the generality of these observations. In this paper, condensed data1 are presented for galena, pyrite and glass. Galena and pyrite are crystalline materials and glass is noncrystalline. Galena has excellent cubic cleavage. Pyrite, although cubical, does not have marked cleavage. Quartz, on which the original determinations were made, does not cleave and although crystalline (hexagonal) breaks conchoidally. Glass breaks much like quartz. It is apparent, therefore, that the minerals selected represent some range in character of the solid without covering all possible types. Glass Fifteen glass marbles were crushed individually in the pendulum crusher described in the preceding paper,' then subjected to careful screening for 30 min. Six sized fractions were selected and cleaned in a hot 0.12 N solution of hydrochloric acid, washed with distilled water and dried on a hot plate. This was followed by an examination with a binocular microscope, to remove foreign matters not eliminated in cleaning as well as to eliminate "compacts" of fine particles. These compacts are groups of he irag-ments that seem to be mechanically stuck together as a result of localized compacting during the comminution operation. The presence and the abundance of these compacts may be related to the amount and direction of the forces applied in different crushing devices. Since, properly, such compacts should be entirely eliminated in the sizing analyses, it is necessary to remove them to the last before making surface determinations on sized fractions. For example, with a — 28 + 35-mesh glass the surface areas of two samples, one cleaned with acid and under the binocular, the other only washed, were 102 and 172. cm' per gram, respectively. Examination of the samples under an Ultropak microscope showed that washing alone failed to remove the compacts and also that it fails to remove certain fine dusts attached to the particles. There were no important developments in the oil and gas industry in South Arkansas during 1935. Oil production, totaling 11,138,340 bbl., continued the decline that has been normal since 1925, but the decline from 1934 was only 278,600 bbl., or 2.5 per cent. The principal decline was in the Smackover field, while only the Champagnolle and Garland City fields showed notable increases. More wells were drilled than in any recent year, with a total of 123 completions. There were 44 oil wells, with a total reported initial daily production of 10,013 bbl., or an average of 227 bbl. per well. Two small gas wells were completed in Union County, where the gas is used locally for pumping and field operations. There were 77 dry holes, of which 28 were in or near oil fields and 49 were wildcats. Active drilling oper-at'ions declined from 65 at the beginning of 1935 to 41 at the end. Most of the drilling was done during the first part of the year, espr-chially (luring the flurry caused by the discovery late in 1934 of the "Taylor" sand production in the Champagnolle field, but the producing area was soon outlined. In November, 1935, the J. E. Crosbie, Inc., NO. 1 Sullivant in sec. 12, 17s. 14W., producing 560 bbl. per day at 3175 ft., opened a new sand lens in the eastern part of the field. The Camden "oil field," discovered in the last week of 1934, remained a one-well field, although four offset tests were drilled, besides a number of others in the immediate vicinity. Several interesting deep tests were drilled during the year, which added a great deal to the general knowledge of the subsurface formations and the structure of south Arkansas, but were not particularly encouraging as to prospects for the very deep production. First, the H. L. Hunt, No. 15 E. F. Gregory well in sec. 10, 17S., 14\W., in the Champagnolle field, was drilled to a depth of 6911 ft. It pene-trated red beds for 2982 ft., from 2943 to 5925 ft., mostly if riot entirely of Lower Cretaceous age. There was some anhydrite in the last 135 ft. of red beds. This was followed by 890 ft. of limestone, probahly Permian, and the rock salt was struck at 6815 ft. The salt is now generally conceded to be of Permian age. Human engineering was the keynote of the thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which was held in New York, December 3-6. This note was sounded by President Charles T. Main in his address at the opening session and was carried through by all the speakers. In his survey of the year's work, he said that more than 6000 names of engineers were furnished the Government for filling a wide variety of positions. In addition to the 1400 members in service, two members of the council of the society are in uniform in France and one, as a distinct war service, is in charge of one of the largest shipyards. After giving other ways in which the Society has helped the Government, President Main called attention to the necessity for thoroughgoing efforts to increase production and the settlement of questions involving industrial relationships. At the following meeting, President Adams of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers called attention to the necessity of meeting labor in a progressive way, facing labor questions fairly and squarely, as the real interests of labor cannot be separated from those of the engineer. Charles E. Knoeppel, discussing "Industrial Organization as It Affects Executives and Workers," said the problem of the cost of living might be settled in two ways: 1, there must be more producers, and 2, there must be a greater amount supplied by those now producing. The first solution is practicable, he said, if labor is allowed shorter hours, better conditions, and a remuneration that will attract workers. The second can be employed by eliminating waste, standardizing conditions, setting fair tasks, and allowing men to earn an amount that will compensate them for' their skill and cooperation. Dudley R. Kennedy of Philadelphia, employment manager of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation, said the human-engineering phase of the country's industrial development had generally been overlooked. "We hardly yet know what competition means; we will learn it within a few years. Permit me to prophesy that the executive of the next decade will be the man who best knows men. He will be an originator, a handler of men as individuals, a handler of men in the mass, a leader not a driver, a very human man. The science of human engineering is here to stay. The study of human characteristics is the most enduring, as well as the most fascinating in the world, and still the most complex."

The following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies, so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal student's. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbitumi-nous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states, that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses. WHEN beryllium is bombarded by gamma rays under suitable conditions it evolves neutrons. This nuclear reaction, Bes + y + n + Be", [I] is utilized in the process that is described in this paper. The equation, which physicists often abbreviate to Bevy, n)Be" shows that a photon, y, is absorbed by the Be- sotope of beryllium which then emits a neutron, n, leaving Be8 as a residue." It has been determined that the threshold for this reaction is 1.63 mev; that is, gamma rays having an energy less than 1.63 million electron volts do not have enough energy to remove a neutron from the beryllium nucleus. The threshold value for the beryllium (y, n) reaction is lower than that for any other element. The next most sensitive element is heavy hydrogen (deuterium) whose gamma neutron reaction, D2 (-y, n) H1, has a threshold of 2.2 mev. Thus, gamma rays having an intensity between 1.63 and 2.2 mev will evolve neutrons from beryllium and from beryllium only. Nuclear reactions can be considered as occurring between a projectile and a target. The probability of the occurrence of any such encounter can be expressed in terms of the "cross section" of the target nucleus for the projectile and projectile energy. This cross section, then, is the area normal to the path of the projectile controlled by the target for the purpose of the reaction under consideration. Cross sections are usually expressed in barns, in which a barn is lo-" sq cm. The cross section for Eq 1 is very small, even for nuclear reactions, and of the order of 10"3 barns. Previous researchers have used the cutting and rejoining model to represent a porous body when attempting to place Archie's law on a theoretical basis and calculate rock permeabilities (F = Ø-m, where F = formation factor, = - porosity and m = a constant). In using the model, a porous solid is assumed to consist of sections with parallel sides containing straight. continuous pores of total porosity 4 (pore to total volume or, for a homogeneous body, pore to total area). The joining of pores at an interface between two sections is assumed to be random which results in a common pore area Ø2. This reduced area Ø2 is then taken as that area which limits electrical conduction or fluid flow in the body. Agreement between experimental results and results calculated using a model is not always good Because of this, various modifications of the model are presented — for instance, the random nature of the joining is questioned. Formation factor measurements on specially constructed porous specimens are described in this paper. it is concluded that the common pore area limits flow completely only if sections containing straight pores are very thin, and that, in most natural materials, the common pore area at an interface must be greater than that given by random joining. However, the model is still useful in permeability calculations, provided that the fractional area limiting flow is determined from formation factor measurements. INTRODUCTION Two important properties of porous media are permeability k, which describes the ease with which a fluid can flow through a porous medium, and formation factor F, defined as the ratio of the resistivity of a saturated specimen to the resistivity of the saturating liquid which describes the electrical properties of the saturated material. k is defined by Darcy's law,l k= µqL/P Ae . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1] where µ = liquid viscosity, q = flow rate, L = length of specimen, p = pressure across the specimen and = - the effective area over which flow occurs, F is given experimentally by Archie's law,2 F = Ø-m ,..............(2) where 4 is porosity defined as the pore to total volume or, for a homogeneous body, the pore to total area; and m lies between 1.3 for loose sand and 2 for cemented sand. Consider a porous body of total cross-sectional area A and length L, saturated with a liquid of resistivity R and with an effective area for conduction of Ae. The development of Gulf Coast salt domes thus far, although enormously successful and productive, has proceeded in an unscheduled fashion governed by events rather than by a comprehensive plan. Motivation for the sequential progress of exploitation has included mineral discoveries, inventions, technological improvements, new needs, and a dynamic economy. Although it is too late to implement a plan for the entire cycle of exploitation of this resource, it would seem advisable to introduce now a system concept for further development. Viewed from this perspective, general determinative parameters should include economic, environmental, logistical, technical, and resource considerations, and more fundamentally, basic societal goals. Experience gained from planning in the Gulf Coast should provide guidelines for use elsewhere in the world.

When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. This study of aluminum-copper alloys had two aims: 1) To determine the effect of the amount and distribution of a second phase, CuAl2, on the creep-rupture strength, ductility, and fracture characteristics of the alloys. The work of Gemmell and grant' on single-phase aluminum-copper alloys provided a basis for the present study. 2) To attempt to provide a relation between the microstructure and strength of two-phase alloys deformed at comparatively high temperatures (greater than 0.45 T,). The creep behavior of the two-phase magnesium alloys Mg;Ce and Mg-A1, has been treated by Roberts. 9 In work reported by Sully and Hardy4 and by Underwood, Marsh, and Manning~ on A1-Cu two-phase alloys, and also in a portion of the work of Gemmell and grant,' aging took place during the creep tests. 'In the present work, overaged aluminum-copper alloys were subjected to creep deformation at two temperatures, 500 and 700OF. The overaging treatments to produce the precipitate dispersions were performed prior to the test, at temperatures which were the same as the ultimate respective test temperatures. Hence, the present study is concerned with the creep behavior of stable (in contrast to "underaged") two-phase A1-Cu alloys, i.e., alloys in which no depletion of the solid-solution matrix occurred during: creep. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE A 2 and a 3 pct Cu alloy, supplied by Alcoa, were studied; Table I shows the compositions. The grain size of the specimens, 0.9 to 1.0 mm, was achieved by annealing the machined test bars for 2 hr at 1000°F, followed by furnace-cooling to 900°F, and homogenizing for 4 hr. Both compositions are in the single-phase condition at 900°F. Two types of overaged dispersions, termed "over-aged I" and "overaged 11" were prepared after the grain size and the homogenization anneals. The overaged I alloys were prepared by quenching to room temperature after homogenization, aging at either 500' or 700°F for 72 hr, and air-cooling to room temperature. The overaged I1 alloys were prepared by furnace-cooling after homogenization, to either 500' or 700°F, and holding at the necessary temperature for 72 hr. The times for furnace-cooling from 900°F to 700° and 500°F were, respectively, about 2 and 3.5 hr. The structures of the A1-2 pct Cu alloys are shown in Fig. 1 (overaged I) and in Fig. 2 (overaged 11). A comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 shows that in the overaged I alloys the precipitate particles along the grain boundaries are much more closely spaced and the grain boundaries are straighter than they are in the overaged I1 alloys. Further, the particle size and spacing in the grains are smaller than in the overaged I1 alloys. Microstructures of the A1-3 pct Cu alloys have not been shown; the structures of these alloys differed from those of the A1-2 pct Cu alloys only in that the distribution density of the particles was greater. The creep specimens had a gage section 1 in. long with a diameter of 0.155 to 0.195 in. Before testing, specimens were electropolished in a solution of 100 cc glacial acetic acid, and 30 cc of 60 pct perchloric acid, at 40' to 50°F, at 24 v. The specimens were kept refrigerated prior to testing to avoid precipitation at room temperature. Constant stress creep tests were conducted; the load was applied 75 min after heating of the specimens to test temperature had begun. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Creep-Rupture—Fig. 3 shows the log stress-log rupture life plotfor the overaged alloys studied, and also for the underaged A1-2 pct Cu alloy.' At 700°F, the stress-rupture life relationship is nearly independent of both the amount of precipitate (i.e., composition) and of the type of overaging treatment (i.e., precipitate dispersion). The w transformation in the Zr-Nb system was studied using X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, re-sistornetric, hardness, and metallographic techniques. w forms in a diffusionless, completely reaersible manner on quenching and in a diffusion-controlled manner- on aging. The temperature at which w begins to form on quenching was determined as a Junction of composition and was found to decrease with increasing solute content. w formed bv aging establishes a metastable equilibrium with an enriched ß phase. The ß/w + ß transus has been determined for this metastable equilibrium and employed to rationalize retrogression and reversion phenomena observed in these alloys. The decomposition mechanism is discussed in terms of a gradual or continuous transformation from ß to the w state. BETA- stabilizing alloying elements lower the MS temperature of the martensitic bcc (ß) to hcp (a') transformation in zirconium and titanium alloys. In certain titanium alloys, a lower symmetry modification of the martensitic structure, termed (a"), also has been reported.1,2 These martensitic transformations are suppressed when the amount of the ß-stabilizing element exceeds a critical level. However, the high-temperature ß phase cannot be quenched to room temperature without change. At alloy contents just above the critical level, |ß trans-forms to the w phase when cooled rapidly.3-6 The amount of w in quenched alloys is reduced by increasing alloy content, and this phase virtually disappears above a critical composition.5 In addition to the transformation during cooling, w also can be formed by aging ß at temperatures below approximately 500°C, and significant alloy enrichment of retained 13 accompanies the isothermal transformation.1-8 The structure of LC is closely related to that of the ß from which it forms.9-15 The bcc (ß) lattice can be generated using a hexagonal cell with three atoms located at (000) and ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/3). This cell has an axial ratio of 0.612 and is oriented with respect to the cubic cell such that (0001)H (111)C and [1120]H [101]C. Consequently, there are four possible orientations of the hexagonal cell, associated with the four (111) planes of the bee lattice. Formally w can be obtained from 0 by allowing the two atoms at the ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/3) positions to approach the coordinates ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2) and there are four equally probable orientations of w for each 0 grain. In titanium alloys w retains the cubic axial ratio of 0.612" and hence also can be indexed as triply cubic, but this is not the case for aged Zr-Nb alloys where w is clearly hexagonal with an axial ratio of 0.622." The lattice parameters and atomic positions of w depend on thermal history and alloy content. The atomic positions (000), ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2) provide reasonable agreement between calculated and observed diffracted intensities for w in the fully aged condition.10,14 In the quenched condition, on the other hand, the atoms appear to be displaced from the central plane12,13,15 and assume positions ±(2/3, 1/3, Z = 0.42-0.48) rather than ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2). This results in a structure with trigonal rather than hexagonal symmetry. The readily detectable parameter and axial-ratio changes of w in Zr-Nb alloys make this system especially attractive for studying the structural changes that occur in the formation and aging of w. Particular attention in this investigation has been directed to the relationship between the structure of w in the quenched and aged conditions, and to certain aspects of the reaction kinetics. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Zr-5, 12, 17.5, and 25 pct Nb alloys were prepared by a double arc-melting practice, encased in stainless-steel cans and hot-rolled to 1/8-in.-thick sheet.* Charged weights have been employed for the niobium contents and interstitial analyses are reported in Table I. Dilatometric, X-ray diffraction (filtered CuK, and MoK, radiation), metallographic, and hardness techniques have been employed to follow the transformations during isothermal and quench-aging heat treatments. The growing interest in the use of CO, in crude oil recovery increases the need for data on the effect of CO, on hydrocarbon physical properties. Data are presented on the solubility of CO, in various dead oils, the swelling changes in CO2-oil solutions and the effect of CO, on dead oil viscosity. This latter property shows the most pronounced effect, with viscosity reductions up to 98 per cent of the uncarbonated viscosities. An empirical method of estimating the viscosity of carbonated oils is presented. The apparatus and procedures used are described in sufficient detail to allow others to make similar studies. INTRODUCTION The effect of dissolved carbon dioxide on the swelling and viscosity reduction of specific hydrocarbon oils has been observed and recorded by a number of investigators.'- me object of this paper is to offer a means of predicting these effects for crude oils free from natural gas, using the dead state viscosity and gravity of the crude oils. The CO, solubility and swelling of numerous crude oils were determined in a visual cell at various pressure levels. The viscosity of the oils carbonated to various pressure levels was then determined by measuring the pressure drop across a capillary tube. From these data, the physical properties were correlated empirically. The resulting correlations allow the prediction of CO, solubility, swelling and viscosity reduction if the dead state gravity and viscosity of the oils are known. SOLUBILITY AND SWELLING MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE A high pressure visual cell was installed in a constant temperature cabinet. A test gauge was attached at the top of the cell for pressure measurement, and a line was run through the cabinet wall to a wet test meter which was used for volumetric measurement of the gas. The first step in making a test run was to put the oil in the cell up to a level about half to two-thirds of the total volume. This required about 50 to 65 ml of oil. carbon dioxide was then bubbled up through the oil for a time during which the pressure of CO2 in the cell was kept above 800 psia. Saturation of the oil with CO2 at this pressure and ambient temperature was confirmed by slowly bleeding CO2 through a valve to the atmosphere. If the oil was completely saturated with CO2, bubbles of gas would form in the oil at the first small decrease in pressure. If the oil was under-saturated, no bubbles formed until the pressure was decreased to the saturation pressure existing in the oil. If this saturation pressure was lower than that desired, more CO2 was bubbled through the oil until the desired level was reached. After saturation at ambient temperature was completed, the cabinet temperature was adjusted to the desired level and the cell was allowed to reach temperature equilibrium. After temperature equilibrium was reached, the pressure was again decreased slightly, and the oil again checked for full CO2 saturation at the cell pressure. The pressure now had changed because of the difference in solubility of the CO, in the oil at higher temperatures and the expansion of CO2 as the temperature increased. The outlet tube from the cell was then connected to the wet test meter and the CO2 was allowed to flow slowly out of the cell and through the wet test meter at ambient temperature and pressure. The water in the wet test meter had previously been saturated with CO2 at ambient temperature and pressure by allowing CO2 to flow continuously through it lor a period of several hours. The gas flow was stopped at several pressures during the run and the cell was allowed to come to equilibrium; this made possible the measurement of solubility and swelling data at the intermediate pressures. The volume of the oil in the cell was recorded at each of the equilibrium pressures in order to obtain swelling data. DATA AND RESULTS The solubility of CO2 in the oil was calculated by the relationship V — V, where R. = solubility of CO, in crude oil, cubic feet of CO, measured at 60F and 1.0 atm/ bbl of dead state oil at the temperature under which solubility was measured, V, = volume of gas released from the cell between the saturation pressure and zero pressure, corrected to 60F and 1.0 atm, cu ft, V, = volume of CO: contained in the gas space above the oil, corrected to 60F and 1.0 atm, cu ft, and V, = volume of the dead oil in the cell in bbl at the temperature of the run.
