INTRODUCTION The block-caving mining method is one of the most economical ways existing today to extract ore from nature. It is undoubtedly the least costly of the underground systems and moreover it compares favorably to open-pit mining. In addition to its low cost characteristic, the block-caving mining method permits a great extraction volume as can be exemplified by El Teniente's output capacity of over 22 million tons of ore per year. These characteristics of block-caving give assurance that, even though it is a very old mining system, it will be a good answer to the many future large massive low ore grade deposits to come and a1 so to rep1 ace open-pi t mining as such operations get deeper with higher stripping ratios. These are the reasons that induce further study of block-caving. In this paper block-caving at El Teniente is analyzed with due consideration to the major problems that this mine will encounter. Emphasis is given to the factors influencing the mining of soft ore which accounts for most of the ore to be extracted in the next ten years. A separate paper is devoted to a major modification introduced to block-caving hard primary ore at El Teniente by means of LHD equipment extraction. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT MINING Ore Production and Flow Over 62.000 tons per day of ore are extracted 359 days per year at the El Teniente Mine. The Teniente 8 train haulage level at 1.983 m takes 29.000 tons daily to the Col6n Concentrator. Two trains make the 8 km haul with 16 cars per train. Car capacity is 90 tons. The Teniente 5 train haulage level 298 m above takes 33.000 t per day to the old Sewell Concentrator. Ore is produced from three production areas in two different levels. The so called North Mine produces 42.000 tons daily from the Teniente 4 level 65 m above the Teniente 5 haulage level. The Central Mine produces 1.000 tons from the first hard rock block caved at the Te- niente 4 level. The combined 43.000 tons per day production is sent through inclined 2 m dia- meter raises to the Teniente 5 haul age level , where 33.000 tons are taken 2.5 km to the Sewell Concentrator and 9.000 tons are hauled 0.5 km to a 5 m diameter vertical ore pass which sends ore to Teniente 8. The haulage is by 7 trains, 15 gabble-bottom cars per train. Car capacity is 20 tons. The so called South Mine produces 19.000 tons per day from the Teniente 1 level 645 m above the Teniente 8 haulage level. Ore is transferred by 2 m diameter inclined raises to the Ten 1 Retram level 22 m below, where 5 trains with 20 Sandfor Day cars per train, 8 tons capacity per car, haul the ore 1.5 km to two vertical 5 m diameter ore passes which connect to Ten 8. Starting in 1982 the Central Mine will in- crease production to 6.000 tons per day. An in- dependent loop haulage system will start operat- ing at the Teniente 5 level to feed a new under- ground 1.372 mm (54 in.) gyratory crusher which will send minus 152 mm ore (9 in.) to Teniente 8. In two or three years time the North Mine will only feed the 33.000 tons to the Sewel 1 Concentrator with its old Teniente 5 haulage system. The Col6n Concentrator will be fed from the Central and South Mines. Figure 1 shows the transfer systems and ore flows. The Ore Body In plan view at the Teniente 4 level the ore body has a kidney shape 1.800 m long and between 400 to 700 m wide. The north-eastern section of the ore body was washed away by the Teniente River. At the Sub 5 Level, 125 m below Teniente 4, the mineralization completely surrounds the circular 1.000 m diameter steep-sided barren breccia pipe (Braden pipe) . The ore body rock is 73% andesite, 14% diori te, 13% dacite and 6% mineralized breccia. Roger A. Markle was sworn in as director of the US Bureau of Mines on September 27, 1978, ending a 20-month period during which the Bureau was without a leader. Some Bureau observers wondered out loud if this delay was a signal that Interior was slowly pulling the rug out from under the agency. When Markle was finally tapped for the director's position-coal industry executive to lead an agency that had been stripped of its fossil fuel R&D functions as well as its safety and health enforcement role--the speculation was fast and furious: One camp had it that Markle was brought in to phase out the Bureau; others said that Markle's directive was to revitalize the organization by charting a new Bureau course. In March, with the proposed Department of Natural Resources making headlines, ME went to Washington to interview Markle about his first six months as director and the goals he has set for the Bureau's future.

The annual Jackling Award Lecture, sponsored by the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, is intended to honor and commemorate one of the greatest mine-makers of all time, an innovator whose vision and determination made ore out of waste rock. He ushered in a new philosophy of mining which revolutionized some segments of the industry and notably affected our economy generally. To have been asked to given the Jackling Lecture this year is an honor that I scarcely deserve, but which I have accepted in humble gratitude. Although it is true that "many a mine has made the man," it is also true that while ore bodies are found, mines are made. That statement has been hammered into my skull many times by a man whose own career exemplifies its truth, a man who has been first and last a steadfast friend, who for a while was my boss and mentor, and who as one of this country's great mining geologists has laid his hand to the making of many a mine. I will doubly cherish the memory of the honor bestowed upon me because the presentation of the Jackling Award was made by this man. After the Lord made Dick Hunt he threw away the mold. Metals and other mineral products are essential ingredients of the social economy of the modern world. No well informed and thoughtful person can doubt that they will be indispensable to mankind as long as the fabric of civilization as we know it today can be held together. They are mined from ore bodies, which, unlike some other kinds of bodies, are physically inorganic and wholly incapable of reproducing themselves. Since in time they become mined out, an endless procession of new producers must be made by someone if the fundamental needs, to say nothing of the not so fundamental whims of an affluent society, are to be gratified. In saying that these mines must be made, I mean exactly that. It is my purpose to comment upon some of the problems we must cope with in making them. I shall try to avoid dwelling needlessly upon aspects of new mine development with which most people in this business are thoroughly familiar, and will attempt to discuss in a useful way some of the newer and more significant features of the economic climate in which these endeavors must be conducted. To begin with, an Almighty force put the ore into the ground, and selected the places in which to put it. Mankind was not consulted. Beyond that stage, however, mankind must find the ore deposits and contrive to extract their contents and put them into useful service. In doing this, he must use tools and techniques devised by man to overcome obstacles created in part by nature, but also in part by man himself. And most importantly of all, in making the tools and applying the techniques, he must use people. In the whole process the most pliable ingredient at hand-and also the most unpredictable-is people. Mines play out, and men die. As time goes on, we will have new mines, and they must be made by new men. The Environmental Dilemma It is perhaps timely to touch first upon the newest and in many ways the most potent consideration affecting the feasibility of developing new mines-the problems related to protection of the environment and to the

X-ray dif action techniques were used to investigate ordering and domain coalescence for the B2 (CsC1) superlattice in this alloy. Essentially complete disorder is obtainable by drastic quenching. isothertmal ordering occurs very rapidly at temperatures between 565° and 680°C, only a few seconds being required for development of substantial long-range order. A very fine antiphase dormain structure, found in samples annealed for short times, undergoes coalescence with further annealing. Domain "size" is found proportional to (t)1/2 . This Yate law can be derived by adapting the formalism of Hillert's analysis 01- metallurgical grain growth. For this Purpose the material is descvibed in terms of a "Swiss-cheese " structure, consisting of two multiply connected, mutually intertwined domain volumes. The observed activation enevgy for coalescence, 70 kcal per g-atom, agrees with an estit~lated value ,for volume diffusion in disordered rrzaterial. It is suggesled that the experimental value vejlects the substantially disordered environment of mobile vacancies located in the moving antiphase domain boundary. The alloy Fe-Co-2V is bcc below about 900'C and orders into a B2 (CsC1) superlattice below about 730c It has important applications in magnetic components, including many requiring extensive cold rolling.* example, Marcinkowski and Brown6 observed a re1atively small as-quenched domain size of about 250Å in B2 Fe3A1. Since there appear to be no published data on domain coalescence in B2 alloys, this process was studied in detail. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES A commercial high-purity alloy, nominally 49 Fe-49Co-2V, was obtained from the Arnold Engineering Co. in the form of cold-rolled sheet 0.004 in. thick. Samples were annealed for 1 hr at 800°C in dry H2 to produce disorder and quenched into iced brine. They were then annealed in a nitrate-nitrite salt bath for various times at temperatures between 525° and 625°C. Estimates of the LRO parameter S and the APD size D were made using established X-ray diffraction techniques. Superlattice peaks are best observed using CoKa radiation, for which the value of (fFe-fCo) is maximized. Peak-to-background intensity ratio was improved by filtering CoKß from the incident beam to eliminate sample fluorescence, and by using a pulse-height analyzer. The LRO parameter S was computed from the ratio of integrated intensities I 100/I 200- Owing presumably to systematic errors associated with the presence of crystallographic texture and X-ray extinction, only rough agreement was obtained between experimental and theoretical (absolute) intensity ratios. For this reason certain experimental refinements (e.g., use of balanced filters) were considered superfluous and were omitted. Emphasis was placed on maximizing intensity in order to reduce the time taken to accurately determine the contour of the very small (loo), peak. This was done by point counting 105 counts at appropriate intervals. Background intensity averaged about 1200 cps.

The analyses given in Table I. were made several years ago at my request at a plant using Lake ores. They are of two furnaces, one making basic, the other Bessemer pig— they gave 6 casts each in 24 hr., also two flushes of cinder between each cast. They are offered simply for the sake of reference as, so far as I know, it is unusual to find so frequent full analyses made and none are on record. The variations in manganese-content in the first and second flushes on the basic furnace are interesting, if no more than a freak—the first flush being invariably higher in manganese. The iron-content of the two slags from an average of 12 flushes shows: Basic. Bessemer. Per Cent. Per Cent. Total iron...................................... 2.85 1.70 Combined iron................................ 0.72 0.52 Free iron....................................... 2.13 1.18 The greater iron-loss in the basic slag, while known, has never heretofore been so clearly set forth. This may modify the arrangement for handling slag; heretofore usually determined by proximity of the dumping-heap. If a nearby heap is used on contiguous territory, in the past, tilting molten-slag pots were used. If the Pittsburg flood-records for 30 years are a fair criterion the government regulations were inadequate, and molten slag was dumped in such a manner as to throttle the Monongahela at the time of the spring thaws. At Pittsburg the slag, where it is carried to a distance, is frequently granulated in pits and then removed in cars to which it is conveyed by clam-shell buckets. This practice is also quite customary where the slag is intended for the manufacture of slag cement. The production of 500 tons of cast-iron daily means about 300 tons of- slag and at 2.113 per cent. equals 6.4 tons

INTRODUCTION The commercial paper market, unique to the United States, is a direct exchange of funds between high-grade borrowers and large lenders; because it eliminates both the bank's role as middleman and also some significant transaction costs, commercial paper is the lowest cost short term instrument in the world. For this reason, virtually all borrowers would like to enter the market, but only issuers with the highest rating from Moody's and Standard & Poor can attract purchasers at the best rates. COMMERCIAL PAPER The commercial paper market, in existence for over 100 years, has traditionally been used for short-term financings, with most paper maturing within 30-45 days. Under the U. S. Securities Act of 1933, (section 3(a)3) industrial paper can avoid registration only if it matures within 270 days and is used for current transactions. It was first used to finance the short-term seasonal working capital needs of manufacturing companies. Since World War II, commercial paper use has grown steadily, serving in the 1950's as the market in which finance companies financed the explosion in consumer credit purchases of heavy consumer durables. LETTER OF CREDIT BACKING As far as is known, the use of letters of credit to support energy-related commercial paper began about 13 years ago with an arrangement to finance the nuclear fuel for Con Edison's Indian Point 3 Plant. Goldman, Sachs was the architect of this financing and Chemical Bank provided the letter of credit support. After an early burst of interest, this type of financing wobbled severely in the difficult credit markets of the mid-seventies before regaining serious momentum in 1976 and 1977. A mining project would not normally qualify as a borrower in the commercial paper market because of its credit standing and because its large capital needs require long term financing. However, lately, commercial paper has begun to take the place of a bank term loan in limited recourse project financings. L/C backed commercial paper took this new and startling turn in 1982 when it was used as part of the $700 million financing for the development of the Newlands-Collinsville coal mines of Mount Isa Mines Ltd. in Australia. This was the first use of L/C backed commercial paper in a long-term limited recourse project financing. First Boston acted as financial advisor and, again, Chemical Bank provided sole letter of credit support of $155 million. The $785 million BHP financing for the acquisition of the Queensland (Australia) coal assets of Utah International from General Electric Company followed the next year; there we acted with two other Front Banks to provide $270 million of L/C support. These two important transactions indicate that not only has commercial paper become an integral part of a long-term financing package, but also that it is no longer the exclusive domain of the best known U. S. companies. Lesser-rated companies and a multitude of foreign borrowers have gained access to this "exclusive club." How has this become possible? OPERATION OF AN L/C An instrument of the commercial banks, the "direct pay" letter of credit, has enabled lesser-rated companies to issue commercial paper in their own names. The letter of credit allows the issuer to substitute the credit rating of the supporting bank for its own. The L/C in effect allows a lesser-rated company to rent the bank's credit rating. This upgrading is possible because the bank is unconditionally obliged to pay the note-holders at maturity and then turn to the Issuer for reimbursement. The Issuer commonly "rolls over" a new short-term issue and reimburses the supporting bank from the sale of the new issue until cash flows from the project allow the borrower to reduce the level of paper outstanding. The commitment for an L/C facility, up to 12 years in the case of the Broken Hill transaction, governs the life of the commercial paper tranche of the financing. The term of the L/C commitment thus has the power to extend the ordinary 30-45

Reading in the AIME annual reports that certain activities have been financed by the Rocky Mountain Club Fund, less senior members of the Institute may wonder. "What's the Rocky Mountain Club?" Less youthful members will not have to wonder. They will recall the Club as an intriguing, almost fantastic organization, largely of western mining men, that flared across the New York horizon, flamed brilliantly for a little more than two decades, then sputtered out of existence- glorious even in its last flash. It was the only product of its mold, a fabulous group of magnanimous men who unhesitatingly sacrificed a cherished dream for which they had raised millions of dollars so that the money, instead of creating a magnificent club house, could be used instead to save the lives of starving Belgian children in World War I.

DRILLING and blasting in anthracite open-pit mines is a continuous problem to contractors and explosive engineers because of the diverse conditions caused by the nature of the geological formations, the extensive mining of the portions of coal beds near the surface, and the proximity of many strip pits to populated areas. Pennsylvania anthracite occurs in four separate long and narrow fields totaling only 480 sq miles. The coal measures are rock strata and coal beds that are considerably folded and faulted. The crests of the anticlines are eroded extensively. The beds outcrop on the mountain sides and dip under the valleys. At first only the upper portions of the synclines could be stripped. Now stripping to increasingly greater depths is economically possible, as is indicated by the fact that the proportion of freshly mined anthracite produced by strip mining has increased from 3.7 pct of the total tonnage in 1930 to 29.6 pct in 1950. Much of the rock overlying the deeper beds now being stripped is so extensively broken that considerable difficulty is experienced in drilling satisfactory blast holes and in using explosives in such manner as to insure a uniformly broken material easily removed by the excavating machinery. Such breaking of rock strata has occurred because the bed now being stripped has been mined extensively in former years by underground methods, and tops of gangways and chambers have subsequently failed. Draglines are used to uncover coal where the overburden can be moved with little or no rehandling. These machines range in size from those having a 2 cu yd capacity bucket on a 60-ft boom to those handling a 25 cu yd bucket on a 200-ft boom. Draglines are also used to strip to the bottom of the coal basins if the depth and the distance between the crops are not too great. For this type of operation blast holes are drilled full depth to the bed. These holes are commonly 30 to 90 ft deep; however, in exceptional cases, holes may be as shallow as 12 ft or as deep as 130 ft. Drilling is normally done for blasts of 12,000 to 60,000 cu yd of overburden, 30,000 cu yd being considered an average blast if vibration is not the controlling factor. Where the stripping of wide basins or the exposure of a moderately pitching vein makes the use of draglines impractical, dipper front shovels equipped with 4 to 6 1/2 cu yd buckets load into trucks. Overburden is removed in benches of 25 to 30 ft with blast holes drilled 4 or 5 ft deeper than the planned floor of the bench. For shovels under 5 cu yd bucket capacity the volume blasted varies from 8000 to 12,000 cu yd, whereas a volume of 30,000 to 50,000 cu yd of overburden is frequently blasted at one time for the larger shovels where vibration is not an important factor. During the past decade the churn drill, generally the Model 42-T Bucyrus-Erie blast hole drill equipped for drilling 9-in. diam holes, has become the most common blast hole drilling machine. Electricity powers half the churn drills in use and is preferred on the large strippings where electric shovels are operated and the working area is concentrated. On these operations the cost of additional electricity for the drills is less than the cost of fuel to operate diesel units because of the existing large demand load of the excavating equipment. Moreover, electric motors start more easily in cold weather and generally are less expensive to maintain. Diesel driven units are employed where a higher degree of mobility. is required. The average drilling speed is 8 ft per hr, although in softer rocks a rate of 15 ft per hr is attained. Where rock is hard and strata is badly broken, drill speeds may ' be less than 2 ft per hr. Low drilling production results under these circumstances when loose material falling from the upper portion of the drill holes causes drill stems to be jammed. Rock formations vary so greatly in the region that a 9-in. diam churn drill bit may become dull after drilling only 2 ft or may drill satisfactorily for 56 ft; however, an average of 35 ft is usual in sandstone of medium hardness. Dull bits are hoisted to flat bed trucks by the sand line of the drill and are usually sharpened in the contractor's bit shop adjacent to the job. Care is generally taken to cover the thread end of the bit with a cap. To facilitate handling of bits around the drill, a heavy thread protector having an eye top is becoming more popular than the flat-top rubber or metal cap furnished with new bits. The 9-in. diam blast holes for a 25 to 30 ft bench are normally on 18x18 ft to 20x20 ft spacings, depending on the character of the overburden, although in broken ground 15x18 ft centers may be used to obtain better breakage and a more even bottom for the bench. PARTIAL phase diagrams of titanium with iron, cobalt, and nickel have been established by previous investigators.1-3 These diagrams seem to be reliable, at least for concentrations of titanium ranging from 0 to about 50 at. pct. More recently, Long and his collaborators have presented a tentative titanium-nickel diagram covering the titanium-rich side.' These various studies indicate that in each system three intermediate phases exist and correspond to the compositions Tia, TiX, and TiX2 (or TiX3). The purpose of this paper is to review the available information on the crystal structure of these phases and to give the results of additional X-ray diffraction studies. Previous Work A summary of the work of Wallbaum and his collaborators"-' is presented in table I. The first intermediate phase on the titanium-rich side of the three systems, with iron, cobalt, and nickel, is of the Ti2X type and has a face-centered cubic structure. Although it is stated that the unit cell contains 96 atoms: no lattice parameters are given. The second phase is centered around the compositions TiX for the three systems. The crystal structure of this phase is mentioned in a short note" as being body-centered cubic (CsCl type), but no parameters are given. The analogy between the three systems, which is perfect as far as the two phases of the type Ti2X and TiX are concerned, disappears at the titanium-poor end of the diagrams. In the system titanium- iron, TiFe2 has an hexagonal (MgZn2 type) struc-ture with the parameters given in table I. The existence of TiFe3 has also been reported8 (table I) but was questioned by other investigators2 and is also refuted by the present study. In the system titanium-cobalt, a phase corre-sponding to the composition TiCo2 has been investi-gated by Wallbaum and Witte6 who claim that the structure is cubic (MgCu2 type) for alloys slightly deficient in cobalt and hexagonal (MgNi2 type) for alloys slightly deficient in titanium. The parameters of the two phases are given in table I. In the system titanium-nickel, the nickel-rich phase corresponds to the composition TiNi3 and has been described as hexagonal7 with the parameters given in table I. The present investigation was initiated for the purpose of filling in the gaps in the knowledge con-cerning the structure of the various phases sum-marized in table I. Since the titanium used by Wallbaum and his collaborators was only 95 pct pure,' it was found desirable to redetermine the lattice parameters of the alloys prepared with a

Those familiar with the war in France at first hand know that in these last two years the weight of the suffering has fallen upon the families of the well-to-do classes; those who before the war lived in comparative ease and comfort, with every prospect of educating their children as their parents and grandparents had been. Thousands of the men in these families have been killed, "officiers d'élite," and the small pensions accorded the widows permit them only to house and feed their children HELÈNE JOURNÈS. and give them a common-school education. The pension for a lieutenant's widow is $245 a year; for 'a captain's, $345; for a colonel's $575; and so on. At present, it requires three francs a day to provide food for one person in cities, and conditions are not improving. The American Ouvroir Funds, 681 Fifth Ave., New York City, has tried for nearly two years to have individual Americans give individual children a "bourse," or purse, as it is called, of from $150 to $250 a year, so that they may enter such educational institutions as the Lycées, the Polytechnique, Beaux Arts, St. Cyr, etc. The war relief societies of these military schools furnish photographs and histories of children under their care and on their lists.

During the past year personnel of the Roof Control Research Group of the Bureau of Mines designed and developed encapsulated hydraulic cells for measuring pressure changes in coal in situ. Preliminary results from feasibility tests in progress in the laboratory and field indicate that the cells respond favorably to changes in pressures associated with a coal-mining environment. The ultimate objective is to use these cells to obtain engineering information relating to coal bump or coal outburst phenomena. Mining research has experienced a remarkable growth during the past decade and from all indications should surge forward at even a greater pace in the future. This increased interest in mining research has been brought about by the ever-multiplying number of technical problems being encountered by the mining industry in its effort to produce pay-dirt tonnages safely and economically from greater underground and surface pit depths. Among the various divisions in the field of mining research, the study of ground stress has received a large part of the overall attention. Numerous technical papers have been written with regard to ground stress conditions around mine openings and yet the total usable knowledge concerning this subject is extremely limited. Research teams around the world are endeavoring to bridge the gap between theoretical and laboratory approaches and the solution to design problems in the field. The problem of ground stress is not a new one for the coal mining industry. Operators in both eastern and western coal fields of the United States as well as in many foreign countries have long been plagued with a number of ground stress problems, one of which is commonly referred to as the coal-mine bump. This term or phenomenon has been aptly defined by earlier investigators as the violent and sudden failure of coal and adjacent rock. Direct results of such failures have been the loss of human lives and thou- sands upon thousands of dollars of sustained mine damages. In an effort to alleviate the magnitude and frequency of these failures, mine operators have employed and are presently employing various corrective techniques. These include: Inducing failure in heavily stressed areas by augering large-diameter holes into stressed pillars, using extensively yield-able steel arches in both long-term haulage and short-term face entries, backfilling unused or abandoned entries with mine waste to gain additional support, and using systematic pillar coal panel extraction techniques including mechanized longwall mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines has for a number of years contributed considerable time, funds, and talent in an effort to define better the ground stress problems associated with coal-mine bumps. As a part of this investigative program, in situ ground pressures are presently being studied in coal mines located in West Virginia and Utah. The description and development of the device being used to measure these pressures is the specific topic of this paper. CHOICE OF INSTRUMENTATION After consideration and evaluation of the various instruments and techniques that are being used by researchers in the field of rock mechanics to detetmine in situ stresses, a simple hydraulic system was selected for detailed investigation. Aside from simplicity, a hydraulic system is relatively inexpensive and also eliminates the need for electricity in its installation and operation. The hydraulic device referred to is, in essence, a simple unidirectional pressure-measuring cell. Hydraulic cells, which had been used for measurement of pressures in hard rock, were investigated but found not entirely suitable for use in coal, particularly since they involved (1) preparation and emplacement of cement grout at the test site, and (2) a waiting period before the cells became operational. At the outset, it was decided that certain design parameters be established. The cell should be simple and inexpensive, constructed of materials readily obtainable and easily built in the laboratory or field by unskilled labor. International developments affecting foreign in- vestments in 1960-61 were many, varying from region to region and differing with respect to various categories of investments. Total value of U.S. private investment abroad in 1960 was approximately $32.7 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over 1959. Production and distribution of mineral resources was, by a sizeable margin, the most important function of American capital working in foreign countries in 1960. Investment in mining or petroleum interests totaled approximately $14 billion, or 42% of all direct foreign investment. In- vestments by industry for 1960 were as follows: Petroleum-10.9 billions, Mining-3.0 billions, Manufacturing-11.2 billions, Utilities-2.5 billions, other-5.1 billions. American investors found Canada and Latin America to be most desirable in 1960 with the greatest percentage of American capital in all areas centered in the petroleum and mining industries. The areal breakdown of total American investments is as follows: Canada-$11.2 billions, Latin America-$8.4 billions, Western Europe-$6.6 billions, Middle East-$1.2 billions, Far East-$1.2 billions, Africa-$.9 billions, other areas-$3.2 billions.

The Mining Section of The National Safety Council recently sent out a questionnaire to operators, regarding the class of rope used, specifications required or obtained, factors of safety observed, methods of fastening ropes, lubrication, inspection, and points observed when rope is to be discarded. The answers received from this questionnaire, largely from metal mines, give interesting information, from which recommendations for safety practice on hoisting ropes are drawn. Depth of Mine The depth in the majority of cases noted is from 1000 ft. to 1500 ft. (304 to 457 m.) and records come from a number hoisting from depths of 2000 to 3000 ft. Hoisting is generally done in balance, with a few companies using counterweights. Seldom, more than two shifts are occupied in hoisting. A number of large operators limit the shift for engineers to 6 hr. A few of the larger operators have separate hoists for men and supplies, with a higher class rope for men. The range of loads varies from 7 to 17 tons and greater in a few cases, with a balanced weight of 4 to 7 tons. Size or Drums and Sheaves The size of drums and size of sheaves are generally in accordance with recommendations of rope manufacturers. Only one-half of the operators use grooved drums; one, The Sulphide Corpn., New South Wales, uses wood-lagged drums. Very few operators have drums capable of holding all the rope in a single wrap. Cone drums or cone and cylinder drums, in the mines heard from, are very rare. A few mines of shallow depth use a small drum and large-sized sheave. While this may be allowed, and in some cases is all right, the size of drum and sheave should be fully equal to that recommended by the rope manufacturers and should be at least 60 to 100 times the diameter of the

The rotary gas fired reheating furnace used by the American Zinc Oxide Co. at Columbus, Ohio for Therotarygasfiredreheatingfurnacerefining lead-free zinc oxide is described. The outstanding features of this operation are that the color of the zinc oxide is greatly improved, sulphur is eliminated, and cadmium arethatrecovered without densifying the product to an objectionable degree. IN 1919 Leland S. Wemple obtained a patent for a process of reheating zinc oxide wherein the "coarsening of grain due to excessive heating was avoided." He taught in his specification that if solid carbonaceous material, such as lamp black, was added to the zinc oxide in proper amounts prior to reheating, objectionable sulphur compounds could be removed and the color would accordingly be improved and no objectionable densification would occur because of the relatively low temperature required. The situation that made this invention imperative was the newly opened zinc oxide plant of the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in Hills-boro, Ill. This was one of the early Western Type American Process zinc oxide operations. Characteristic of all of these early Western operations using Tri-State and Western ores was the great difficulty encountered in obtaining a product low enough in sulphur to compete with the Eastern Type American Process zinc oxides which were made from ores containing very low sulphur percentages. Wemple demonstrated that the refining process of his invention produced a superior color and although this was true and a most welcome feature, the primary purpose of the early refining operations at Hillsboro was to reduce substantially the high sulphur content of the crude zinc oxide. Although many and varied attempts had been made for refining zinc oxide none of the processes had a commercial history of any consequence until Wemple's invention became standard practice for the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co. in 1919 and their operations have been unique in that substantially all of their lead-free zinc oxide has been reheated since the first installation at Hillsboro. This process has become known in the industry as refining. The furnace developed by Wemple and continued in use by the company from 1919 until 1943 was unusual and merits some consideration by way of review in this paper. The furnace was essentially a double hearth coal-fired muffle furnace with a mechanical raking system consisting of a central shaft supporting six rabble arms in each muffle. The untreated or "crude" zinc oxide was fed onto the outer rim of the top muffle, moved to the center where it dropped to the lower muffle and progressed to the outer rim where it was discharged into an alloy screw conveyor. The retention in this furnace was extremely short, about 5 min, and the shallow zinc oxide bed on the hearths of the muffles was being continuously turned by the fast moving rabbles. Soft coal was burned on the grates below the lower muffle and the long yellow flame necessary to carry the heat around both muffles resulted in a very inefficient combustion of the fuel. The temperature of the top of the lower muffle seldom exceeded 65 °C although the oxide itself often reached 700°C before discharge. The capacity of this furnace was approximately 1/2 ton per hr. In our plant at Columbus it was necessary to keep four of these furnaces running in parallel to take care of the production because, as mentioned above, every pound of zinc oxide produced during these 24 yr passed through one of these refining furnaces. An essential part of this refining operation was the use of carbonaceous material admixed with the zinc oxide fed to the furnaces. Between 1 and 2 pct of a bran produced in the processing of cotton seed was added to all zinc oxide charged to the furnaces. The bran ignited on the top hearth and was still burning when the charge fell from the top hearth to the bottom hearth making a cascade of sparks. The rapid turning of the zinc oxide caused these particles of bran to flash on the hearths behind each rabble; but the combustion, of necessity, had to be complete by the time the charge reached the outer rim of the bottom hearth, otherwise the finished product would be contaminated with the charred particles of bran which would give the zinc oxide an unsatisfactory color. Although this operation was initiated to reduce objectionable sulphur percentages, as time went on new properties of the product were appreciated which made advisable continuing the refining process long after other methods of sulphur reduction became known in the industry. The particle size and particle size distribution, the absence of colloidal fines and perhaps a unique surface condition gave this product an outstanding performance when used in paints. The Wemple furnaces installed in Columbus in 1919 had to be rebuilt frequently and were extravagant in the use of fuel. The raking mechanism and the muffles required excessive maintenance expense and as the furnaces wore out the problem arose whether to continue along this line or to explore the possibilities of obtaining similar or better results in the simpler and more commonly used rotary furnace. (communication to the Secretary +) :-The nails method is given in many text books on assaying as a standard method for gold or for gold and silver in ores. It appears to be taught in the laboratories of technical and scientific schools as a standard method, and to some extent it is used by assayers in actual practice, although the class of ores to which it may be applied is limited to those free from reducible metallic compounds, the metals of which would enter the lead button. The experiments of Messrs. Hall and Drury show the inaccuracy of this rnethod for silver, in heavy sulphides, but not so clearly the short-comings with regard to gold. It seems certain that low silver is caused by the solubility of silver in iron-alkali sulphide as compared with its solubility in molten lead; that is, silver is distributed between iron-alkali sulphide and metal in the charge in proportion to solubility at the particular temperature of the fusion. Lead is a fixed quantity in these assay charges, but iron-alkali sulphide increases with increased sulphur, so the more sulphur in the charge, the lower the silver results.

The needs of the World War showed the necessity of a metal stronger than cast iron which would supplement the supply of steel. SO patriotic metallurgists were spurred to new efforts to improve the status of that half-breed of the metal world that had been, more or less erroneously, christened semisteel. As a result, it was developed that for certain purposes semisteel was superior to steel in the manufacture of shells. Steel, because of its greater strength and toughness, is able to carry a greater charge of explosive, weight for weight; consequently, a steel shell can be expected to cause greater destruction when used against fortifications or other inanimate objects, while semisteel, because of its comparative brittleness and its resulting greater fragmentation, is capable of inflicting more serious loss of life when used against opposing forces of men. Therefore, each has its proper place in the economy of war. For the present purpose, steel may be defined as a comparatively pure iron whose physical nature is modified by small amounts of carbon, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, manganese, and possibly other rarer elements; while cast iron generally is limited to approximately 93 per cent. of iron, the remainder consisting of larger percentages of carbon, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, and manganese. Semisteel may be defined as cast iron in which the carbon and silicon have been reduced to as low a point as is consistent with maintaining the nature of gray iron, and in which the remaining elements are adjusted so as to give the greatest strength. The fact that the addition of steel scrap, in varying percentages, is the means used to reduce the carbon, together with the fact that a considerable increase in strength results, is probably the explanation of the origin of the name semisteel.
