THE iron ores of the Marquette region are mostly extracted in open excavations ; hence the process is more properly quarrying. Several attempts at underground work have been made, which have not, on the whole, been successful. The Edwards mine has been almost entirely wrought by candle-light. The slate ore pit, No. 1, of the New England mine, is now worked in the same way, as is also the Pioneer furnace pit of the Jackson mine. The Champion mine was opened systematically for underground work, with two levels, 60 feet apart, and three shafts at distances apart along the bed. of 200 feet; but this idea has been practically abandoned, the greater part of the ore in that mine being now taken out in open pits. Several other mines have occasionally worked underground stopes, but only temporarily; if such stopes could not be opened out to day-light, they have usually been abandoned. In brief, it may be said that no considerable amount of ore has as yet (1870).been extracted underground in the region, and of that so mined very little has been taken out at a profit; and I may add that it seems to be the belief of the most experienced mining men that this state of things will hold for some time to come for reasons which will appear. Nearly the same remarks may be applied to the mines of the Iron Mountain region, Missouri, the ores of which are very similar in character to those of Marquette. Some of the New York and New Jersey magnetic deposits are wrought open, but this is the exception, underground mining there being the rule. The following brief sketch of the geological structure of the Marquette deposits will indicate some advantages of the method of mining employed. The iron-bearing (Huronian) series of rocks, are stratified beds, the principal ore formation being overlaid by a quartzite, and underlaid by a diorite, or greenstone. At the close of 1927 Venezuela was producing at the rate of 205,000 bbl, per day, making it the third country in the world in point of present daily production. For the year, the total was close to 64,000,000 bbl., representing an increase of about 70 per cent. over the 37,000,000 bbl. in round numbers produced in 1926. All of the 1927 production canie from fields opened up before the beginning of the year. While no new fields were added to the list of shippers, the past 12 months' wildcatting yielded a fair quota of new discoveries which, in the light of prcsent results, may be considered likely sources of production in due time. Altogether three such promising finds were made Of first importance, at least for the immediate future, is the completion by the Lago Petroleum Corpn. of the San Matins well, 4 miles north of the present edge of the Lagunillas field. Although rated as only a 125. bbl. well, at 3217 ft., it indicates a probable extension of the field over the intervening 4 miles between the two. The two other wildcat discoveries of importance were the Los Manueles well in the District of Colon, which has in all probability opened up a new field about 7 miles north of the present Tarra oprations; and the Honibre Pintado well of the Standard Oil Co. of Venezuela,. in the State of Falcon, which is considered to be a promising clc~vc~lop~ncnt. Neither of these last mentioned two discoveries will apprcciably affect production during 1928, as the Manueles area must await the carrying out of a general plan for the exploitation of the District of Colon, a problem requiring time. The Hombre Pintado area is being tested further, but doubtless several wells will be put down before. anything definite will be done towards making the pipe line. arrangements that rnust necessarily precede the commercial exploitation of the field. The oxidation of Cu2S in oxygen and the sulfating of Cu2O in oxygen-sulfur dioxide atmospheres was carried out under a variety of conditions. The oxidation of Cu2S was found to be retarded by entrapment of SO, and O2, which stabilized internal sulfates for long periods of time. The course of the reaction was followed by measuring weight changes and also by SO, evolution. Sulfating of Cu2O was a maximum at ratios of SO, to O2 approximating maximum SO, production. At elevated temperatures SO, was found to increase the rate of oxidation of Cu2 O to CuO even though sulfates did not form. All sulfating reactions followed the parabolic rate law indicating diffusion. MANY studies of the roasting of copper sulfides have been reported in recent years. Diev et al.1 investigated the roasting of chalcocite (Cu2S) in air, and oxygen enriched air. Lewis et al.2 also studied the oxidation of natural and synthetic chalcocite in air and oxygen atmospheres and their studies indicated that the maximum formation of water soluble sulfates occurred at approximately 450oC. Ashcroft3 reported that oxide production during the roasting of chalcocite resulted only from secondary decomposition of sulfates which were formed as primary products. peretti4 refuted this claim by showing that a layer of Cu2O appeared directly adjacent to the Cu2S during roasting of cylindrical briquettes of cupric sulfide, CuS. The linear advance of the Cu2S-Cu2O interface was used as a measure of the kinetics of the roasting reaction. The reactions proposed were: 2 CuS—Cu2S + 1/2 S2 [4-1] 1/2 S2 + O24 SO2 [4-2] cuzs +3/2 O2 4 Cu2O + SO2 [4-3] cu2o + 1/2 O2—2 cuo [4-4] At temperatures above 663oC, CuO was the only final solid phase reported. Below 663" C increasing amounts of sulfate were found mixed with the CuO. McCabe and Morgan5 investigated the roasting of discs of synthetic chalcocite and reported the following sequence of products beginning at the sulfide surface: Cu2O, a mixture of Cu2O and CuSO4, Cum,, CuO . CuSO4, and CuO. The principal reactions were reported to be: Cu2S + 3/2 O2-Cu2O + SO2 [5-1] CU2O + 2 SO2 + 3/2 O2—2 CUSO4 [5-21 2 CUSO4— CUO . cum, + SO3 [ 5-31 cuo . cuso4—-2 cuo + SO, [ 5-41 Eq.15-11 supports the claim of Peretti, Eq. [4-31, that CuzO is formed directly from Cu2S rather than as a secondary product from a sulfate as suggested by Ashcroft. On the other hand CuO was found to form as a secondary product from the decomposition of copper sulfate and basic copper sulfate, Eqs. [5-31 and [5-41. The formation of sulfates was explained by McCabe and morgan5 to be a direct reaction of Cu2O with 0, and SO, or SO, at distinct regions in which the partial pressures of each were such as to form the sulfate. Thornhill and pidgeon6 roasted both natural and synthetic chalcocite grains in air at temperatures between 420" and 550° C. They found a dense primary oxidation layer in contact with the sulfide. A secondary layer of porous oxidation products was found to expand with roasting time. The oxide products were leached away and the remaining core was studied by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray patterns showed an increased conversion of chalcocite to digenite with time. Digenite,7 a defect structure of cuprous sulfide, occurs naturally as Cu,-,S where x = 0.12 to 0.45, with an average analysis of Cu, ,S. The mechanism of digenite formation was proposed as: Cu2S + oxygen—Cu1-8S + 0.1 Cu2O [6-1] Cuj.eS + oxygen—0.9 Cu2S + SO2 [6-2] It is apparent from the above studies that the oxidation of Cu2S, ultimately ending in CuO, may be divided into ihree general stages (all of which may occur simultaneously): 1) primary oxidation to Cu2O; 2) secondary sulfate formation; and 3) sulfate decomposition. Consequently reactions of O2 and SO, with Cu20 constitute important aspects of the roasting of chalcocite. Virtually no studies have been made regarding sulfating reactions involving Cu,O. Mills and Evans8 noted the effect of sulfur dioxide on the oxidation of copper at low temperatures and low SO, partial pressures. They reported a measurable increase in the oxidation rate of copper when SO2, was present. OF the new alloys achieving commercial prominence during the year, an aluminum-silicon magnesium casting alloy, which is similar in many respects to the 4 per cent copper alloy, developed about 1921, which has attained such a wide field of service, may be mentioned. The new alloy, like the old, is a heat-treatable type and develops about the same physical properties. The alloy casts easily and is relatively insensitive to high pouring temperatures. Its ability to produce substantially leak- proof castings is noteworthy. A second casting alloy development is the new Aluminum Co. of America No. 132, "Lo-Ex" piston alloy, a result of nearly eight years of research. The alloy contains about 14 per cent silicon and varying amounts of nickel, copper, and magnesium. It exhibits a low coefficient of expansion and thus permits small piston clearances. Its lower specific gravity is a further advantage.

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-I have the honor to present the following, report for the calendar year 1920. The activities which seem to call for special comment are: THE NEW FORM OF MAGAZINE MINING AND METALLURGY appeared every month during the calendar year and has been developed until it contains some ten departments. It has brought forth more commendatory letters than have been received at headquarters on any other subject throughout the year. Less than a dozen letters unfavorable to the change have been received, and the indications are that the magazine has met a want deeply felt, especially by members distant from headquarters. The technical papers printed by the Institute are published in abstract in the magazine and opportunity is given to members who desire them to receive full copies of any or all papers published. The Bound Volumes, as usual, contain all the papers in full and discussions thereof. FINANCES The greatly increased cost of paper and printing has put a tremendous burden on the Institute's finances, since the dues of $12 per year are only 20 per cent. greater than the members paid when the Institute was founded forty-nine years ago. This has resulted in a temporary deficit, similar to that encountered by many of our sister engineering societies. The fact that our Institute has lower dues and gives more in the way of publications to its members than any other of the national engineering societies has rendered the situation more difficult for us. MEETINGS The Annual Meeting in New York, the Field Meeting in the Lake Superior District, the meeting of the Petroleum and Gas members at St. Louis, and of the Institute of Metals Division in Columbus, Ohio, have all been described in full in the magazine.

Hazardous methane gas in coal mining is receiving increased attention due to the increased US demand for coal which has resulted in the exploitation of deeper seams and the utilization of more productive equipment. Problems posed by methane emission has the Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Co. (Conoco) accelerating efforts that began in the early 1950's with Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol).1 The program's focus is on finding new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas.

THE Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. began to produce bismuth at the Oroya smelter in 1929, at which time the only important consumption of that metal was in the manufacture, of pharmaceutical compounds, and the normal supply of metal exceeded the demand. With a new and major producer entering the field, additional uses for bismuth had to be developed. A survey indicated that the most promising opportunity lay in fusible alloys containing bismuth. A large number of bismuth alloys were known and a few of them were being used in the manufacture of automatic sprinkler heads and safety plugs. The literature cover in,- the- alloys was found to be sketchy and contradictory. Research, development, and educational work carrried on by the Corporation during the past fifteen years has resulted in greatly enlarged uses for the metal. A method using computer techniques is described for the comparative evaluation of truck performance over any given haul road using readily obtainable manufacturers' data. An additional computer program is utilized to calculate individual cycle times for each truck and shovel combination, fleet requirements for any desired production rate, and to estimate comparative costs. The introduction of a large number of variables into the program permits management to determine the critical system factors having the greatest bearing on costs. Thus, the method described can be used not only for analysis of needs for a new surface mine but for cost improvement in existing mines where changes in truck and shovel operations are contemplated. The systems analysis approach to the solution of problems in the mining industry is gaining in industry acceptance. This is a logical development in view of the fact that a mine constitutes one of the most dynamic systems of production. In contrast with a manufacturing plant, situated in a location selected through choice and utilizing a regulated source of quality controlled raw materials, the miner must go where the ore is and he is faced with ever changing physical conditions. He is subjected to the vagaries of nature, and he can never mine the same ore twice. What is systems engineering? There seems to be no concise and universally accepted definition of the term and its meaning is still fairly local. It deals largely with trade-offs of subsystem characteristics to achieve some desired result in an overall system. This concept of suboptimization can be explained by an example. If the objective of a mining company is to produce a certain quality ore at minimum cost, the optimum operation is not achieved by minimizing all costs, since all phases of mining are interrelated. Reduction of blasting costs might well increase loading, hauling, and crushing costs out of proportion to the resulting saving in explosives. Hence tradeoffs are necessary. It is evident then that an optimum system is achieved through a blending of suboptimal components which taken together yield the desired result. OBJECTIVE For our mathematical model we will assume the existence of a hypothetical new organization called Taconite Mining Co. (TMC). Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain <0.3% Cr203, and chromite is almost always less than 50 mp in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratiform and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (>25% chromite) or very low grade (<2% chromite); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes, large tonnages exist only in the <2% chromite rocks and the composition of the chromite in those rocks may be unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than lo8 tons of material with 2.0 to 5.5% Cr203, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts. It is to the credit of management, engineers, and others that in the vast majority of cases, the outcome of their work has been technically sound and economically rewarding. There is a way, however, to insure even better results.

D. C. Ralston (U. S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—Flake mica can be beneficiated by a wider variety of methods than almost any known mineral. However, most of these methods are not recorded. It is therefore a pleasure to find a written record of another application of a new method of beneficiation. The fact that the Humphries spiral gives a concentrate containing the mica flake mixed with the slime and small grit has forced a further separation by screening, in which the finest of the flake will pass through. Fine flake has its uses and if mixed with slimes or clay is recoverable reliably only by flotation. This loss must be charged against the spiral. On the other hand, the new muscovite mica paper recently brought out by General Electric Co., can be made only with grit free flake larger than 50 mesh. It is of interest to learn from the authors whether the washing of the flake on a 50 mesh screen can take the grit content below 1 pct, to meet this new demand. Must another degritting process be used on the flake, like electrostatic treatment of the dried material? H. D. Snedden (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—When recovering mica in the spiral, gangue particles coarser than 16 mesh can be rejected more readily when operating at a high pulp density (35 pct solids) or a low volume rate (—15 gpm). A launder screen as used by Lehigh Coal Co. has proved very satisfactory to partially dewater the mica concentrate and to reject any gangue slimes it may contain. Under certain conditions mica cleaning in the spiral can be improved by reagentizing the spiral feed, the object being to insure wetting of the gangue minerals and to agglomerate or prevent wetting of the mica particles. R. B. Adair (authors&apos; reply)—The grit content of the mica recovered on Humphreys Spirals varies with the fineness of the launder screen used to clean the mica product. Normal practice has been the use of 80 mesh screen, which will produce a mica product of acceptable grit content for most purposes. By using a 50 mesh screen, and increasing the screen area per ton of feed, it is felt by the authors that a mica of 99 pct plus purity could be obtained. This statement would hold only in the case of mica feed which was well de-laminated, and free from "clay balls," (semikaclinized feldspar), which tends to follow the mica through the process.

When considering the question of future demand for crude petroleum in California, one must first decide whether it is to be approached in the light of the definition of "demand" when used in economics; i.e., "The quantity of any commodity required or sought in the market," or in the light of markets developed to dispose of total supply. Therefore, is the California demand of future years to be predicated on a continuation of supplying markets developed following the surplus production commencing in 1922, or predicated on supplying what would be termed economic markets ? If the latter, what are economic markets ? Obviously, the Pacific Coast States and Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and probably the Pacific side of Central and South America, can be considered as normal markets for California petroleum products. While there have been small quantities of gasoline shipped into the PacSc Coast from East Texas, transportation costs, plus import taxes in the case of foreign oil, are a sufficient barrier to justify considering that these markets will be retained. But how about our participation in Atlantic and Pacific foreign and intercoastal markets? During the five years preceding 1931 California shipped substantial quantities of gasoline to the United Kingdom and to France, Germany and Italy. During recent years our business in European markets has been restricted to occasional shipments of gasoline and Kettleman crude. This loss of business is occasioned by the development of production in the Mid-Continent, principally East Texas, and in Iraq, Rumania, Venezuela and other closer producing areas, which makes it impossible at the prevailing crude-oil prices for California to be competitive in supplying any substantial portion of these markets. It is therefore apparent that under a stabilized price structure that will return the California producer a reasonable price for his oil, future Atlantic foreign -business will be restricted to occasional spot cargo sales. This paper covers oil shale resources in those countries that border the Pacific Rim. The major known resources around the Pacific Rim occur in the Western United States, Australia, the People&apos;s Republic of China, (PRC) and the Thailand/Burma region. The location of these deposits is shown in Figure 1. In 1965, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated world oil shale deposits of over 4 quadrillion tons having a potential oil yield of over 2 quadrillion barrels. If all this were extracted, it could meet the world&apos;s entire energy needs far into the future. However, the Survey also estimated the spent shale waste could cover all of the surface of the world to a depth of about 10 feet. Thus, for this and many other technical and economic reasons, it does not appear to be feasible to develop a large portion of the world&apos;s oil shale resources in this century; nor will shale in itself solve our energy problems. Nevertheless, shale oil and other &apos; synthetic fuels are expected to play an important role in new energy supplies in the longer term. WHAT IS OIL SHALE OR SHALE OIL? The term "oil shale" is sometimes a misnomer, in that the rock is often more of a limestone or siltstone than a shale. The common link between resources termed “oil shale" is that they all contain an insoluble substance cal led kerogen (which is from the Greek words for waxmaking). Kerogen is a form of organic carbon derived from a variety of plants ranging from algae to higher plants. When heated sufficiently, the kerogen generates hydrocarbons called shale oil, a form of synthetic crude oil that in most cases is lower in hydrogen content than conventional crude oil. The amount of oil in oil shale is relatively small --roughly 10 percent (by weight) in the richer shales. To upgrade this synthetic oil to usable products, additional processing is necessary. This brief sketch gives an idea of what this different, but significant, form of hydrocarbon is like. ENVIRONMENTS OF DEPOSITION Most oil shale deposits fall into three environments of sediment deposition: 1ake (called lacustrine), sea (marine) and river (fluvial-deltaic). In each case, the deposition of oil shales took place in quiet water environments where plant life, particularly algal plants, could flourish and, after dying, be deposited in unoxygenated water where the kerogen precursors would be safe from destruction by oxidation. The oil shales that were deposited in large lake basins (lacustrine) have attracted the most attention for development over the years. They often have multiple seams, deposited in a cyclic nature with extensive areal distribution and rapid vertical changes in kerogen content. Grades are moderate to high, ranging from 80 to 200 liters per tonne. Rundle in Australia and the Piceance Creek Basin in Colorado are examples of this type. Both deposits represent large volumes of oil shale in small areas which could provide the large volume of feedstock needed for future commercial operations. The stratigraphic sections of these two deposits feature thick oil shale seams with average grades of 80 - 125 liters/tonne conducive to both open pit, and underground operations. However, the rock strength of the Rundle shale is not sufficient to - support underground mining. On the other hand, the Colorado deposits, being more carbonate in nature, are sufficiently strong to support either type of mining depending on the overburden to ore ratio. These latter types of deposits will likely provide the first target for development of a commercial industry. The marine type is characterized by extensive areal distribution with relatively thin seams. The grades are generally low to moderate, ranging from 50 to 120 liters per tonne. The marine oil shales are common worldwide, and their attractiveness for mining is dependent on the overburden to ore ratio. Because of their widespread areal distribution, their in situ resources can be quite large. The Toolebuc Formation in Central , Queensland, Australia is a good example of this type of deposit being 7-10 meters thick over an extensive area. The Julia Creek deposit with its favorable overburden-to-ore ratio is being studied for possible development. In a fluvial-deltaic environment, there are many small lakes or bogs associated with rivers in which a very pure type of oil shale called torbanite could form. Torbanites are very high grade containing up to 75 percent hydrocarbons. The known occurrences are generally small lenticular deposits associated with coal seams. Even with the high grades, it is not likely that any of the known deposits would warrant commercial development because of their small size. The torbanite deposits in New South Wales, Australia were processed prior to World War I1 near the town of Glen Davis. However, today&apos;s known resources of this type are not large enough to warrant a commercial plant.

DURING the comminution of a brittle material in the presence of dry air, no known phase change or chemical reaction takes place. The energy changes associated with the comminution are those of the transformation of kinetic energy into heat energy and the energy absorption represented by the actual rupture of molecular and/or ionic bonds. The random nature of the actual grinding process in a tumbling-mill often precludes the effective application of a rupture force on each individual particle of brittle mineral present. The result must be a great deal of useless vibration on an atomic scale in both the brittle mineral and the grinding medium below the elastic limit, which vibration is eventually manifested as heat energy in the mill. The actual rupture of molecular, or ionic, bonds creates new surface on the brittle minerals; each square centimeter of this new surface then must possess a number of potential bonds, each of which could reform theoretically with the release of energy. The sum total of this potential energy of bonding per unit of new surface, minus bond satiation effects of the enclosing gas or liquid, must be the surface energy of the mineral. If the comminution of the brittle mineral were carried out within the chamber of a calorimeter, the energy released as heat could be determined rather accurately. Moreover, the total kinetic energy input to the comminuting mass (mineral and medium) conceivably could be derived by a suitable torquemeter and revolution counter if the whole calorimeter were revolved. The difference between these two energy figures should then represent the net energy (gross energy input-heat energy output) used in creating

Cryoelectronics has been largely an "inte- grated-circuit" technology since its conception because the switching speed of superconductive devices is attractive only when these devices are fabricated with thin-film techniques. It is true that cryotron circuits can be constructed from wires of appropriate materials (as indeed was done by Dudley Buck 1 in his early investigations) but these circuits will switch in times characteristic of milliseconds whereas similar circuits fabricated by thin-film methods have potential switching times of nanoseconds. Furthermore, cryo-electronic devices such as the cryotron lend themselves readily to fabrication by thin-film techniques since these components may be made from polycrys-talline thin films and are relatively insensitive to the presence of impurities (as measured by semiconductor standards). Therefore, during the past decade considerable effort has been devoted to developing techniques for batch fabricating circuit arrays containing superconductive switching elements. Technology had developed to the point several years ago that fabrication of cryoelectronic arrays containing up to one hundred devices was rather straightforward. However, larger arrays containing between lo4 and 106 components which are required for commercial development of cryoelectronics still pose very severe yield problems. Thus in a sense cryoelectronics found itself in 1962 at the point semiconductor technology finds itself today; namely, individual devices and small groups of integrated devices could be fabricated with acceptable yield and the outlook for building larger integrated-circuit arrays was bright. Unfortunately, problems associated largely with yield have made fabrication of these larger arrays difficult. Unlike semiconductor technology, cryoelectronics had to solve the problems of large-scale integration before it could become economically attractive. This has proven to be a sizable burden to bear. Since several reviews exist on superconductivity,2 superconductive devices,3 and cryoelectronic technology, no attempt will be made in this paper to summarize these areas. Instead a few specific topics will be dealt with in more detail. First, a brief description is given of selected superconducting switching and storage devices with special attention to several metallurgical techniques which improve the performance of these devices. Second, techniques used to fabricate cryoelectronic devices are described with emphasis on problems affecting yield. Third, techniques for interconnecting a number of cryoelectronic planes are described. And last, refrigeration of cryoelectronic components is discussed briefly since the low operating temperature of superconductive devices is an important consideration in this technology. SUPERCONDUCTING STORAGE AND SWITCHING DEVICES The basic superconductive switching device is the thin-film cryotron. The geometry of this device is attractively simple, since it involves only the intersection of two lines that are electrically insulated from each other. The switching element (gate) and control element (control) of a crossed-film cryotron are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1. The material for the gate is selected to permit the gate to be switched from the superconducting to the normal (resistive) state by the application of a control current. Tin, which has a critical temperature (T,) of 3.7°K, is commonly used for the gate and the cryotron is operated at a temperature just below T, (for example, 3.5°K). The control material (normally lead, with T, = 7.2°K) is chosen so that the control is never driven normal during circuit operation. To improve cryotron operation, a ground plane, also of lead, is placed under all of the circuitry to act as a diamagnetic shield and improve the current-density uniformity across the width of various thin-film elements. Normally, line widths vary from 0.005 to ^ 0.020 in. and film thicknesses from 300 to 10,000A, although new fabrication techniques make narrower lines feasible. In fabricating cryotrons it is important that the edges of the gate elements be geometrically sharp to avoid undesirable switching characteristics associated with a thinner edge region, Fig. 2. One technique which has been used extensively to form patterns consists of placing a physical mask containing the film pattern between the evaporation source and the substrate and depositing through the mask. Film strips formed in this manner possess a penumbra at the film edges due to shadowing of the evapor-ant under the mask. The phase diagram of the system Pb-In has been investigated between -27° and + 40°C, using nzainly X-ray dijfraction. In accordance with t her mo dynamic measurements by Heumann and Predel, a segregation occurs at low temperatures, though not in the form of a nziscibility gap. THE phase diagram of the system Pb-In has been the subject of extensive investigations,1&apos;1 but recently Heumann and prede13 concluded from their thermodynamic data that a new feature should occur below room temperature. These authors observed that the maximum values for the enthalpy and entropy of mixing, which occurred at a composition of 50 at. pct Pb, were +400 and —1.7 cal per g-atom deg, respectively. From this the authors estimated that a miscibility gap should occur below 30°C, centered at 50 at. pct Pb. Resistivity measurements seemed to support this view. These authors proposed the phase diagram outlined in Fig. 1. Three phases exist at 30°C: the tetragonal indium phase with c/a > 1, the tetragonal intermediate phase a, with c/a < 1, and the fcc lead phase. During an investigation of the superconducting properties of Pb-In alloys. it has been observed4 that aging a specimen with 50 at. pct Pb for 14 days at -18°C decreased the superconducting transition temperature about 0.13"K and tripled the transition width. In this paper, the results of an investigation of the Pb-In phase diagram in the temperature range from — 2T to +40°C are reported. Superconductivity and X-ray methods have been used. 1) SPECIMEN PREPARATION The materials were provided by the American Smelting and Refining Co. According to the manufacturer their purity was 99.999 pct. The weighed amounts of the constituents were sealed in quartz tubes under an atmosphere of 10 torr helium, mixed for 24 hr in a rocking furnace at 380°C, quenched in ice water, and homogenized at 20" to 30°C below the solidus line, established by Heumann and Predel. The annealing times were 144 hr for specimens containing Less than 30 at. pct Pb and 36 hr for the remainder. 2) SUPERCONDUCTIVITY EXPERIMENTS The specimens were quenched from the homogeniza-tion treatment into ice water and their superconducting transition temperatures T, measured. The procedure used has been described in Ref. 4. The transition was detected by the change of the mutual induc- tance of two coaxial coils containing the sample. T, was defined as the temperature at which 50 pct of the total change in inductance had occurred. The repro-ducibility with which T, could be measured was i0.002"K. Then the specimens with lead contents between 38 and 75 at. pct were aged for 7 days at temperatures between -30" and 40°C. If this treatment caused T, to change by more than 0.005"K or the width of the transition to increase by more than 0.002"K, it was concluded that the specimen had undergone a phase change and no longer consisted only of the fcc lead phase: as it did immediately after homogenizing. The result is shown in Fig. 2. From this one can estimate at what temperatures and concentrations phase changes occur. The X-ray measurements were based on these preliminary results. 3) X-RAY EXPERIMENTS Because of the softness of the material, relatively coarse powders. 75 p, had to be used, which were filed in a helium atmosphere from homogenized specimens. The powders were annealed at least 30 min at temperatures between 120" and 16OJC, depending on their concentration, and quenched in ice water. Then their X-ray patterns were taken at -178°C with a Picker diffractometer, model 3488K, and a cold stage. on which the specimen was in thermal contact with a liquid-nitrogen reservoir. In this way the following relation was established for the fcc lead phase: a = 4.697 + 0.00247C for 40 5 C 5 75 11 where n is the lattice constant (A) and C is the at. pct of lead. The coarseness of the powder made it impossible to use lines with 0 > 75 deg; therefore n was averaged from lines with 45 deg 5 0 5 75 deg. The results were reproducible to within i0.05 pct. Relation [I] is very similar to the one found by Heumann and Predel at room temperature. Following this, homogenized specimens with compositions between 15 and 56 at. pct Pb were aged for at least 10 days at temperatures between -27" and

INTRODUCTION Our growing concern for adequate and secure sources of energy and minerals has stimulated vigorous exploration for new sources, research toward a better understanding of geological processes, and development of new extraction technologies. The need for control, or at least prediction, of subsurface fluid flow is important for many of these technologies for example: primary, secondary and tertiary recovery of oil; ground water and waste management; in-situ fossil energy extraction (oil shale, coal, tar sands); and solution mining of uranium, copper and other minerals. These technologies, especially the last two, are characterized by highly complex systems. A partial list of the physical processes occurring would include flow in porous/fractured media, multi-phase and multi-component flow with heat transport, chemically active fluids and soils, tracers, diffusion and dispersion, fracturing and dissolution. A great deal of understanding of how these processes behave and interact can be obtained from models. MODELS Theoretical models are valuable because they: 1) provide a frame of reference for interpreting results of laboratory and field experiments; 2) once validated by experiments, allow a variety of geometries, injection/production strategies, etc., to be examined (at relatively low cost) for efficiency and stability; 3) can provide guidance to the design of experiments and field operations. Most models are based on the fundamental principles of mass, momentum and energy balance. But from this starting point, many paths can be taken. For example, there is the theory of Payatakes (1973) which concentrates on the microscale dynamics. In this approach, the rock or soil matrix is represented by a complex of characteristic channels (such as periodically constricted smooth tubes). Detail of flow within the characteristic channel is calculated very accurately. A difficulty with this model is that description of a representative channel can require several parameters which may not be easily measured. Also, it is not clear how the channels can be combined practically to model a large scale flow. Another type of model is the "global" one described by Bear (1972). Here, the continuum equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy are averaged over a distribution of pore channels, resulting in a set of conservation equations in which the small scale structure of the medium is replaced by quantities such as porosity, permeability, dispersion coefficients and tortuosity. This approach allows computation of large scale flows. However, additional constitutive equations are needed which relate averaged quantities such as permeability to observables such as local saturation, particle size distributions, and others. An important difference between models is the way they handle the momentum equation. Payatakes&apos; model solves the full equation. In others, it is replaced by a simpler relation such as Darcy&apos;s law (valid for slow flow rates) or by Forchheimer&apos;s equation which extends Darcy&apos;s law to higher flow rates. These simple relations can nevertheless match a great deal of experimental data (Dullien 1975). The permeability term which appears in Darcy&apos;s law and in Forchheimer&apos;s expression has been related to other quantities such as porosity and particle surface area. The Kozeny-Carmen equation is a well-known example, valid for some ranges of porosity and particle sizes and for some materials. Several other semi-theoretical, semi-empirical formulations have been devised, none of which are entirely satisfactory. One goal of researchers has been the ability to predict permeability of a porous material from basic measurable quantities such as grain size distributions without recourse to adjustable parameters. This effort has proceeded from consideration of distributions of idealized, non-intersecting channels, to intersecting channels, to consideration of both distributed pore radii and pore neck radii. This last approach has been used successfully to predict permeabilities (ranging over several orders of magnitude) in sandstones (Dullien 1975). Additionally, studies on explicit networks of channels (e.g., Fatt 1956) and percolation theory (e.g., Larson et. al. 1981) have been used to examine interconnectivity effects in porous media with the hope of eventually being able to predict permeability accurately. To be of more than theoretical interest, a model must be compared s controlled laboratory conditions where boundary and initial conditions and relevant material properties can be accurately determined. Also, extraneous forces can be eliminated so that the interactions between processes of interest can be clearly seen and flow models can be vigorously tested.
