The use of Na-montmorillonite clay binders (Western Bentonite) in the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates is well established as is the idea that alternative binders must be found. 1-6 This note summarizes work done7 in evaluating a Wisconsin montmorillonite clay binder. The clay occurs in irregualr beds overlying the Prairie du Chien Dolomite and the St. Peters Sandstone near Hersey, St. Croix County.

The cross-measure borehole system is a common method of controlling gob gas throughout Europe. Drainage holes are drilled into the strata adjacent to the coalbed being mined. Removal of the coal on a longwall panel relaxes and fractures the adjacent strata, enabling these holes to draw out the methane. A test in the Upper Kittanning Coalbed demonstrated the capture of 50% of the total methane generated by the mining operation. A test in the Pittsburgh Coal bed was not as effective.

A little more than a year and a half ago construction started on Canada's largest initial milling plant. Today the zinc concentrating plant 7 miles north of Barraute sits on ground that once was forest and clay flats. The plant is part of Barvue Mines Ltd. zinc-silver operation. Employees of the plant live in the model community of Barvue, built like the plant in record time. About 5000 tons of ore are handled by the plant daily, with an output of 200 tons of zinc concentrate. Management hopes to raise capacity of the $8 million plant to 6000 tons.

Several techniques are presented to adjust small errors inherent in data collected from material balance measurements on the flotation process. The basic technique used is a Lagrange multiplier adjustment of the filtered data taken from the equipment measurements. The raw data are adjusted such that material balances are closed. The adjustments to each data point is inversely proportional to the square of the standard error of measurement. Problem areas in equipment utilization are discussed. Typical results from on-line measurements are presented. This technique can be applied to either on-line process measurements or metallurgical test data.

To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), rnarcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As&.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also exarnined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or rnarcasite (FeS2. Experimental Method Mineral for Flolation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner a1ready described1 and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and CO2-free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about I bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation , oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the 'supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.l No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 Flotation of "Unoxidized" Minerals with Ethyl Xanthate as Collector Fig I to 3, 4. 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox8 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C Covellite (Fig I), marcasite (Fig 2) and pyrrhotite (Fig 3) behave similarly. On December 31, 1959, there existed in the United States 15,993 slot-type coke ovens capable of producing 81,447,700 net tons of coke. These ovens were concentrated in 74 coke plants in 21 different states. As of the same date, there were 7448 beehive ovens in existence at 45 plants in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Total annual capacity of the existing beehive ovens was 4,368,800 net tons, but only 5148 ovens with a capacity of 3,131,600 tons were in operating condition. It is interesting to compare the average dimensions of slot-type ovens built during recent years with the 30 ft x 5 ½ ft x 16 ½ in. ovens erected at Syracuse, N. Y. in 1892. A composite oven built according to the average dimensions of all those erected between 1954 and 1958, for instance, would be 39 ft long. 12 ft high, and 18 in. in width. The coal capacity would be 16 tons as against the 4.4 tons which could be charged to the Syracuse ovens. Of the 15.993 slot- type ovens in existence at the end of 1959, by far the greater number were built by the Koppers Co. whose total of 11,280 ovens included 7891 Koppers- Becker and 3389 Koppers ovens. Of the remainder, there were 3260 Wilputte, 1350 Semet-Solvay, 63 Otto, and 40 Simon Carves ovens. By-product coke oven plants are usually classified either as furnace or merchant plants. According to the definitions used by the US Bureau of Mines, the former are "those that are owned by or financially affiliated with iron and steel companies whose main business is producing coke for use in their own blast furnaces. All other coke plants are classified as merchant. They include those that manufacture metallurgical, industrial, and residential heating grades of coke for sale on the open market; coke plants associated with chemical companies or gas utilities; and those affiliated with local iron works, where only a small part (less than 50 pct of their output) is used in affiliated blast furnaces." The annual coke capacity of the merchant plants during 1959 was 10,393,000 tons. However, the by-product oven of today is essentially an appurtenance of the iron and steel industry, rather more than 87 pct of total by- product coking capacity being concentrated at furnace plants. This was not always so. There was a time when the merchant plants played a much greater part in meeting the US demand for coke and gas. High noon for the merchant plants was reached during the early 1930's. By 1932 there were as many by- product oven installations being operated by the merchant sector of the industry as by the coke divisions of the iron and steel industry (44 of each), and in the same year the merchant plants produced 46.5 pct of all by-product coke made in the country. Since that time their contribution has drastically declined. In 1940 merchant plants were responsible for only 23.2 pct of total US production, and by 1950 their number had decreased to 30 plants which turned out 18.5 pct of the total by-product coke made. At the end of 1959 only 20 of the 74 existing by-product oven installations were merchant plants. They ac- counted for 12.5 pct of the year's production, or 6,849,786 net tons. This percentage has remained fairly constant since 1954. There are several reasons for the decline of the merchant coking industry. For example. On the grounds of economy, quality control, continuity of supply, and so on, the iron and steel industry usually prefers to control its own mines and carbonize its own coal at or near to the blast furnace rather than rely on independent operators for metallurgical coke. As the steel companies have enlarged their own coking facilities, so has the need for coke obtained from other sources declined. Furthermore, not only has the steel industry increased in self-sufficiency by building mare coke ovens during recent years, but it has also progressively improved the fuel efficiency of its blast furnaces. During the years 1947-49 the average coke consumption per ton of pig iron was 1892.8 lb. During 1958 the corresponding figure was 1613.4 lb. There are many individual furnaces where still better results are being obtained, and further reductions in the average may be expected. Perhaps the greatest threat to the merchant coking plant has been the fantastic increase in the use of natural gas and petroleum products for purposes which manufactured gas once served. So deadly has the com- petition from natural gas and oil been that it has almost eliminated by-product oven installations owned by public utilities. In the peak years of the early 1930's there were 23 such public utility plants. In 1960 only two were left. One of these, owned by the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility, was at Indianapolis, Ind.; the other was the plant operated by the Philadelphia Electric Co. at Chester, Pa. DETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and de-watering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.' During the past fifteen years a number of new surface measurement techniques have been developed. Those that are broadly applicable to materials dealt with by mineral engineers include the permeability method in which a gas or liquid is passed through the sample, and the low temperature gas adsorption methods first described by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller."" Efforts to make surface determinations from size distribution curves have long been attempted"."." but because of the uncertainty of sub-sieve size distribution and inaccuracies in screen analyses, the method is at best only a rough approximation. The most widely used gas adsorption method utilizes nitrogen gas." Nitrogen adsorption, however, is not particularly suited as a tool for most mineral engineers because the method is not applicable for surface determinations on coarse materials, that is, materials coarser than approximately 150 to 200-mesh. Other gases have been used in mineral engineering studies, particularly ethane."' lo The use of ethane gas, however, involves .a technique that is too sensitive for most mineral engineering work. The permeability method of surface area determination has the disadvantage of not being sensitive enough to detect the surface represented by minute cracks, the so-called internal surface of a particle. The low temperature krypton adsorption method described by Beebe1 utilizes apparatus and techniques that are essentially the same as those used in the ethane adsorption method."1° The surface area is calculated by the B.E.T. method."-' The krypton adsorption technique is particularly suited to the needs of the mineral engineer because: (1) The method can be used for making surface area measurements of rather coarse materials (35 to 48-mesh), as well as extremely fine materials, such as clays or colloidal slimes with specific surface that might be as high as 20 to 30 mb er g. (2) The use of krypton gas offers the advantage of low saturation pressures (2-3 mm) at the conveniently obtained liquid nitrogen temperature. Therefore the krypton vacuum system need not be designed to measure or withstand internal gas, pressures above one atmosphere as is the case with the nitrogen gas method. (3) The krypton technique offers the safety feature of employing liquid nitrogen, as contrasted to the ethane technique in which liquid oxygen is required. Furthermore, ethane vapor pressure at liquid oxygen temperatures is low (about 10 microns), and a high sensitivity McLeod gage is required for pressure readings. (4) The measurement technique with krypton gas is much simpler and faster, and the apparatus is less elaborate than that required with either nitrogen or ethane gases. Apparatus A krypton surface measurement apparatus like that used at M.I.T. is shown in Fig. 1. It is constructed of pyrex glass. A vacuum is maintained by two mercury diffusion pumps in series backed by a mechanical vacuum pump."' The vacuum thermocouple gage is used for checking the vacuum within the system. This type of gage is quite sensitive down to a pressure of 1 micron of mercury," but may be used to indicate pressures much lower than that

IN many ways, the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February was the most successful yet held. Attendance surpassed even that of the 75th Anniversary Meeting in 1947 with its international flavor. The number of technical sessions and the number and quality of papers presented almost certainly set a new record. The banquet was the best attended of any yet held even though the price reached a new high. Despite the demand for almost 1700 tickets to the banquet, some felt that the price-$13.50-was higher than they could afford. There are two points of view: One is that this is the big social event of the year for members and that it is worth from three to five dollars more to have it at the Waldorf and to have a luxury menu, as we did this year, with turtle soup, a fish course, guinea hen for the entree, and wild rice (which we understand is $3.50 per lb) for a vegetable. The other point of view is that a seven or eight dollar banquet of more simple food at the Commodore Hotel would more than make up in appeal, especially to the younger and less well-heeled members, what it would lack in glamour.

IT is singular that an industry quite the antithesis of flying should record tremendous strides in the utilization of aviation through- out the entire depression period, .while in the same years private interests lagged and airplatie manufacturing plants closed to such an extent that he purchase of new planes of certain types was practically impossible. Though receiving little notice from aviation publications and national associations, this use of the airplane progressed by sheer merit. It saved money, conserved energies, and made minutes in the air the equal of weeks on foot or water. The advent of aviation into mining and petroleum operations dates back many years, yet it \vas not until the depression that this new facility of the mineral industry was put on its proper economic basis. Pressure-composition isotherms have been determinedfor the systems ZrMo2 -H2 between 0" and 900°C at hydrogen pressures between 10-4 and 760 Torr. Tkese studies plus X-ray diffraction analyses of selected compositions show that these intermetallic compounds form a complete series of hydrogen solid solutions within this temperature and pressure range. The partial molar enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the three intermetallic compounds were calculated. The solubility of hydrogen in these Laves phases can be related to their free electron concentration. ThE reaction of hydrogen with inter metallic compounds of zirconium with Laves phase-type structure has both theoretical and practical interest. The in-termetallic compounds have structures different from any of the pure metals. In addition the electron to atom ratio of the intermetallics varies appreciably. In the nuclear materials field, these materials are of interest since intermetallic compounds may exist as precipitates in commercial zirconium alloys with transition metals. From studies on the hydrogen reaction, one can establish the stability of the intermetallic compounds relative to the hydrides of the component metals. The intermetallic compounds may also be used as getters for hydrogen and as materials for hydrogen storage. This paper will present the results of equilibrium and structural investigations of the ZrCr2-H2, the ZrV2-H2, and the ZrMo2-H2 systems for the temperature range of 0" to 900°C and the pressure range of Torr to 1 atm. A complete thermochemical analysis will be made of the measurements. Some of the results have been referred to in a survey paper' covering the types of hydrogen behavior observed in zirconium alloys. LITERATURE ZrCr2 is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Cr system.' It exists in two allotropic modifications. Between 900" and 1000°C the hexagonal MgZa (C14) structure transforms into the cubic MgCu2 (C15) structure. Beck4 has previously shown that the intermetallic ZrCrz takes up hydrogen into solid solution up to a composition H/ZrCr2 = 1.14 at room temperature and 1 atm hydrogen. A ZrCr2 hydride was stated to have a fcc structure. The binary Zr-V system has been investigated by williams5 although Rostoker and Yamamoto 6 had given earlier a partial phase diagram. ZrV2 was the only intermediate phase found in the system. wallbaum7 reported earlier that the compound ZrV2 hp the MgZm (CJ4) type structure with a = 5.288A and c = 8.664A. This was not comfirmed by Elliot8 nor by Matthias, Compton, and corenzwit9 who reported that ZrV2 has a cubic MgCua LC15) type structure. The latter authors gave a = 7.429A. Also, several authors do not agree on the temperature of the peri-tectic horizontal. It appears that ZrV2 may exist in several modifications. A high capacity for occluding hydrogen was reported by Beck4 who found H/ZrV2 = 1.38 at room temperature and 1 atm of hydrogen. ZrMoz is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Mo system.10 ZrMoa is formed by a peritectic reaction of the melt with a molybdenum-rich solid solution. ZrMo2 has the C15-type structure with a = 7.59A. MATERIALS High-purity chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum were used together with grade 1 crystal bar zirconium to prepare the alloys.
