BETWEEN 1945 and 1948 the author made studies of the western phosphate industry and its potentialities. These included an appraisal of the opportunities for western development of the industry, studies of production costs, of market potentials, of transportation economics, and of industry location. This paper will be directed toward pointing up the factors which have an important bearing on the establishment of fertilizer plants in the western area. Industry Location Factors: There are, of course, an infinite number of possible organizational setups which might require consideration. However, the phosphate industry is simple enough so that studies of the most probable alternatives can be made conveniently. The salient factors which require special consideration in such a study are: (I) the location of the raw materials, (2) the location, size, and character of the present and potential markets, (3) the location of energy sources and materials required for fertilizer processing, (4) the location and capacity of present manufacturing facilities, (5) the cost of assembling the materials and energy needed in manufacturing, and (6) the cost of distributing the manufactured product. Raw Material Supplies: Rock phosphate is the raw material for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizer. In the United States the important known deposits of this material are located in three general areas (fig. 1). The western deposits, comprising about 60 pct of the nation's supply, are in the four-state area—Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Montana. The Florida deposits comprise roughly 38 pct of the national supply. The Tennessee deposits, comprising about 2 pct of the national supply, have been the most important source until recent years. The western deposits, which are virtually undeveloped, have not been used to any extent to meet the nation's need for phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizer. Fertilizer Markets: The large national markets for fertilizer are in the midwestern and eastern United States (fig. 2). The principal far-western markets are along the Pacific Coast, especially in California. Until recent years the western markets have been extremely limited, whereas the markets in the eastern United States have long been established and manufacturing facilities have been provided to meet these needs (fig. 3). In recent years the western markets have expanded very rapidly, continuing to grow throughout the war years and postwar period at a similar rate. The question always arises as to whether this is a temporary war-swollen market which will shrink back to its original size as soon as the present agricultural price levels drop. In order to answer this question consideration must be given to the character of the market (fig. 4). I have considered seventeen western and midwestern states in the western market area where transportation costs from the western deposits are equal to or lower than those from Florida. They include all states west of a line drawn through Chicago, Kansas City and the western boundary of New Mexico. In the mewar period this was a small market totaling only 37,000 tons of P,O, annually. The 1946 total for this same area was approximately 200,000 tons. Considerably more fertilizer would have been used in 1946 had adequate supplies been available. Estimates of future markets are difficult to make, but we do have some indices that are useful. The

A simple zone melting technique for investigating the effect of ultrasonic irradiation upon ingot solidification is described. The effect of i) ultrasonic power level, ii) freezing velocity, iii) constant or variable frequency, iv) direction of irradiation, and v) transducer-cozlpling bar joint upon the grain size of type 316 stainless steel have been investigated. The results of this study support the postulate that the ultrasonic vibrations increase the nucleation probability in the layer of liquid adjacent to the freezing interface. In the first paper of this series,l the possible mechanisms whereby ingot structure may be altered by irradiating a solidifying melt with ultrasonic vibrations have been discussed. A new technique for efficiently introducing the ultrasonic energy into the solid-liquid interface region was presented and applied to ingot preparation by the consumable-electrode arc-melting technique. The experimental results support the postulate that the ultrasonic vibrations may refine the ingot structure by increasing the nucleation probability in the zone of liquid adjacent to the solid-liquid interface. The present paper describes the application of the same technique to a relatively simple laboratory-scale zone-melting apparatus. This apparatus is found to be well suited to the detailed study of ultrasonic technology in this area and allows one to determine, in particular, the minimum ultrasonic power level needed to produce a certain grain size in a particular material. The results of this study support the nucleation mechanism for grain refinement, but do not provide any deeper insight into the specific nucleation mechanism responsible for the effect. EXPERIMENT The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig. 1 and illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. The material to be studied, type 316 stainless steel, was in the form of a 3/4-in. sq bar 30 in. long. This bar was placed in a square open-topped mold with open ends made from high-purity graphite coated with a flame-sprayed Al2O3, skin. Surrounding the crucible was a molybdenum susceptor with 3/8-in. diam holes spaced at 1-in. intervals along its length to serve as sight ports. A tapered transducer horn was brazed to one end of the specimen. The entire assemblage was enclosed in a quartz tube, the transducer itself projecting out one end and resting in a cooling tank. A vacuum seal between the coupling bar and the end plate enclosed one end. A similar plate and seal enclosed the other end. The system is gas tight and can be operated under vacuum or an inert atmosphere. For these experiments, flowing argon at 15 in. of Hg pressure was used. The heat source for melting the stainless steel specimen was a 2-in. long 3-kc induction coil placed around the quartz tube; this source heated the susceptor, inductively melting about a 3-in. zone of the sample by radiation. To move the molten zone at a specified rate, the induction coil was moved down the tube at this rate with the aid of a simple pulling device. Thus, the sample could be irradiated at varying ultrasonic frequencies and power levels and could be solidified at varying rates. The power input to the transducer was measured using a "John Fluke Model 120 VAW-Meter." 1 The power delivered to the interface region is probably only about 50 pct of that measured on the VAW-meter. At the beginning of the present war, the United States faced the need to multiply its production of magnesium metal almost roo times within the shortest possible period. Urgently needed for construction of military aircraft, incendiary bombs, and other war uses, magnesium was at the top of the list of critical war materials. Up to that time only one Producer, employing Only One process and using One raw material in a single plant, represented this country's entire Production capacity. It was immediately desirable to plan a numher of plants located strategically over the Count'Y and to expand an industry more rapidly and to a greater extent than ever before had been attempted in so short a time. In '939 this American producer, the Dow Chemical .9 was making about 7 million Pounds of magnesium metal. It utilized as a raw material brine containing magnesium chloride, which was pumped from wells in Michigan. The logical ap-preach to certain increased production was to employ the same process on the same raw material in other sections of the United States. In Europe and other countries, different processes had been used and different raw materials were being utilized, but all of the skill and knowledge for production in this country was that of using the Dow type of cell and magnesium chloride as a raw material. The Government was testing other processes, but none then had been proved commercially feasible. Development OF New Process The International Minerals and Chemical Corporation had available a large quantity of magnesium ,chloride at Carls-bad, New Mexico, contained in the end liquor produced from its potash plant sillce the buildng of the plant in 1941 It was the only company mining commercially a magnesium ore and having anything like this quantity of magnesium chloride liquor. The magnesium ore, langbeinite, was being mined from the 800-ft. level for its content of potassium sulphate. This ore, a potassium magnesium sulphate, was reacted in a base exchange plant with potassium chloride to produce potassium sulphate, the discharge liquor having a high content of magnesium chloride. Three potash-producing companies are in the Carlsbad area, but only International has developed and is commercially producing the potash-magnesium ores. The lower, or No. 4, veil, in that area is potassium chloride ore, and is continuous through all the properties. The langbeinite, or No. 2, vein is minable at the International property, but occurs sparsely, if - at in other areas being mined in that vicinity. It is understood that most of the mag. nesium produced] by Germany comes from magnesium and magnesium-potassium ores obtained from potash mines. It was logical for International to pro-pose to make available this magnesium material and to offer its technical staff to design, construct and manage a magnesium plant for the account of the Government. Literature on the electrolysis of aluminum from cryolite melts and on the structure of these .melts is surveyed critically. Data on density, freezing point, and other properties are reviewed. Theories of the electrolysis are examined in the light of these data. Two theories are presented which account equally well for the observations. In the early days, the process was thought of as a simple one. The actual mechanisms must be tremendously more complex. This paper is devoted to a rather narrow part of the whole subject, namely, what ions are present in the bath, and by what mechanism the current is carried. Using cryoscopic data, Rolin has determined the following composition for molten cryolite. Na2,AlF 3Na + 3F + AlF [1] He postulates the following equation for the ioniza-tion of alumina at low concentrations Al2O3 Al + AlO2 +O. [2] At concentrations above 0.025M he supposes the ionization of alumina to proceed as follows Al2O3 AlO + AlO2. [3] Rolin's mechanism of electrolysis for the more concentrated solution in Eq. 3 is as follows. The AlO' ion migrates to the cathode. where it is dis- charged, giving metallic aluminum and 0' ions which migrate to the anode. The AlO2- ion migrates to the anode, where it is discharged, giving Al ions and oxygen which reacts with carbon to form CO2 In the case of the extremely dilute solution in Eq. 2 the Al ion migrates to the cathode and the AlO2-and 0 migrate to the anode as before. Another possible mechanism for the electrolysis follows. DriLLing activity and prospecting for oil and gas increascd in Indiana in 1941 over the previous year. The greater part of the drilling and development continued to centralize in the Indiana portion of the Interior Coal Basin, in the southwestern part of the state, but other parts of the state were not neglected. Many wildcat wells were drilled, including a series of core tests through the mantle of drift on the southern flank of the Michigan Basin. These core tests have been followed by several unsuccessful production tests. Production tests were made also along the axis of the Logansport-Kankakec branch of the Cincinnati Arch. In all, 411 field locations and 141 wildcat wells were completed in Indiana during 1941; that is, a total of 552 wells, an increase of 3 2 wells over the previous year. The field tests resulted in 260 oil wells, 57 gas wells, and 94 dry holes; wildcats included 16 oil wells, 3 gas wells and 122 dry holes. At the end of the year, 53 field wells and 34 wildcats were drilling. Gibson and Posey Counties led the state, with 154 and 155 wells drilled, respectively. However, 125 wells produced oil in Gibson County, while 98 produced oil in Posey County. Twenty-five per cent of all wells drilled were wildcat; II per cent of these produced oil and 5 per cent produced gas. Grifin field continued to lead in drilling activity, with 157 successful wells and 20 dry holes (including important wells defining the field). Production is found in five pay zones (Tar Springs, Waltersburg, Elwren, Aux Vases and McClosky). It produced a major part of Indiana's estimated 7,200,000 bbl. of oil during the year. Heusler field, Posey County, expanded with 11 oil ells and 4 dry holes in the Waltersburg and Tar Springs. Vienna field, Posey County, completed four oil producers in the Mansfield sandstone, between 1200 and 1250 ft. The College field, discovered late in 1940, received three oil producers and two dry holes in the Aux Vases. Two new fields were discovered in Posey County during the year: Lamott pool, in the Tar Springs, at 1950 ft., had initial production of 55 bbl. on discovery. One producer and one dry hole have been drilled since. Mt. Vernon pool found saturation in both the Waltersburg and Cypress formations. The discovery well tested about 1000 bbl. per day; it tested the McClosky at 2764 ft. Seven producers have been drilled since the October discovery. Welborne-Switch pool found oil in the Cypress sand at approximately 2500 ft., with an initial production of 33 bbl. One more well in the area proved a dry hole. Gibson County had the following discoveries in 1941: The Patoka field was opened by a McClosky producer of 300 bbl. Another producing well has been drilled. An attempt was made to extend the Illinois Mt. Carmel field into Gibson County, Ind., and one producer of 24 bbl, was completed on the Indiana side. IN the USSR considerable technical improvements have been made in hydraulic methods of mining coal. In New Zealand coal mining by these methods is still comparatively crude. The Russian techniques are closely studied in New Zealand, and this description is based mainly on translations of technical articles. Fundamentally the methods in both countries are the same-chief developments in the USSR are the use of high pressure water jets, capable of winning all but the hardest coal without prior blasting, and hydraulic pipeline transportation where the gradient is unsuitable for flume transport.

STILFONTEIN and surrounding areas gave nega-tive results in all prospecting attempts since about 1904 when Goerz and Co., a forerunner of Union Corporation Ltd., first drilled in the region and on the farm Stilfontein. Subsequent efforts by African and European Investments Co. and Anglo American Corp. from 1934-37 were completely unsuccessful. Holes drilled by these companies on the farms Riet-fontein, Hessie, and Palmietfontein were stopped in the Lower Witwatersrand system without finding payable reefs. The results of gravimeter, ground magnetometer, and aerial magnetometer surveys are presented in the area, in and around the new Stilfontein Gold Mine, in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal in the Union of South Africa. The gravimeter and ground magnetic surveys were completed in 1947—48. The gravity anomalies suggested a block of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites faulted-up between denser rocks of dolomite and Ventersdorp lava. Boreholes S.T. 1, 2, and 3 were drilled in 1948 and, after penetrating the dolomite and Ventersdorp lava, entered Upper Witwatersrand quartzites and intersected the Gold Estates Reef and Vaal Reef. Subsequent drilling delineated the suboutcrop of the Vaal Reef and determined the main structure of this horizon. The gold content of the Vaal Reef was highly payable and shaft sinking is now in progress. The Stilfontein Gold Mining Co. has been formed and, up to date, f5,000,000 capital has been raised for plant, shaft sinking, and development. The payable Vaal Reef horizon extends further south from Stilfontein, the reef occurring at increasing depths. It is possible that at least another mine may be established on these deeper horizons. The farm Stilfontein 39 is situated in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal. This farm and the surrounding areas have been subjected to repeated programs of prospecting dating back to about 1904, when Goerz and Co., the forerunner of Union Corporation, Ltd., first drilled on the farm and in the surrounding areas. From 1934-37, numerous boreholes were drilled on the neighboring farms, Riet-fontein. Hessie. and Palmietfontein, by African and European Investment Co. and Anglo American Corp. All these efforts were completely unsuccessful, and nobody suspected any possible gold-bearing area on Stilfontein until about 1947, when a gravity traverse run by B. D. Maree on the main road, showed a negative gravity anomaly. During 1947-48, the writer's organization completed gravimeter and magnetic surveys on Stilfontein and Rieffontein. An area of negative gravity anomalies was mapped, and it was suggested that this could be caused by blocks of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites, of the average density of 2.65, faulted up between dolomites and Ventersdorp lavas, the density of both of these rocks being 2.8. Fig. 1 shows the geology of the area as mapped by L. T. Nel of the Geological Survey of South Africa. The boreholes on Stilfontein, with the exception of a single hole of Goerz and Co., were drilled after the completion of the geophysical survey. The grouping of the first boreholes S.T. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, clearly shows that these were located in the zone of negative gravity anomalies. Fig. 2 shows the gravity anomaly contours. Fig. 3 shows two sections across the gravity anomaly, together with the corresponding geological sections as obtained from boreholes. The close relation between gravity values and thickness of dolomite plus Ventersdorp lavas is striking. The two latter formations having the same density (2.8), act as one mass as far as gravity effects are concerned. Fig. 4 shows the magnetic anomalies observed on the ground by vertical magnetometers and at 500 ft abbve mean ground level by aerial magnetometer. The latter are anomalies of the total magnetic intensity. The magnetic results show that, on the farm Rietfontein and on the northern half of Stilfontein. Comminution energy is principally energy of deformation before breakage, which appears as heat An empirical equation is presented which covers the entire comminution range. The new strain-energy theory considers comminution from the known principles of mechanics and the reduction ratio. Energy requirements according to the different theories the romnnred. THE present status of the theory of comminution is extremely unsatisfactory. The amount of various ores and rock products crushed and ground annually approaches the staggering sum of perhaps one half billion tons. Yet the basic concepts underlying an operation of such magnitude are unknown, and actual knowledge of what takes place in comminution is almost entirely empirical. The responsibility for this situation cannot be charged to apathy or lack of appreciation of the importance of the problem. Many attempts have been made to evolve a workable hypothesis, but none has been completely successful. General Considerations In order to break rock, it must be subjected to a stress which strains the rock beyond its critical breaking point. The stress imparts energy to the rock, most of which is released in the form of heat when the stress and resulting strain are removed. If the strain induced exceeds the critical strain, the energy is released by breaking; if the induced strain does not reach the critical point, the energy is released with removal of the stress as energy of resilience. Rock is a brittle material and it is assumed that it breaks approximately at its yield point, so that no permanent deformation results from strains below the critical. When rock is broken the total energy input is accounted for by the heat liberated, and by the surface energy of the new surface produced. A small and probably negligible amount is released as noise. Rock is commonly broken under compression and the applied stress is ordinarily compressive. The stress-strain diagram of rocks under compression, and the modulus of elasticity as determined therefrom, should be fundamental considerations in the development of any theories of rock breakage. Crushing in jaw or gyratory crushers results primarily from a squeezing action, and reduction in a hammer mill is the result of impact. The action in rod and ball mills is a combination of impacting, squeezing, and wearing away by attrition, or rubbing. In ordinary crushing and grinding, the forces are applied at protruding points and are not distributed evenly throughout the rock. This is one of the features of comminution which theoretical considerations have not covered adequately. Another feature is the effect of impact velocities, which may greatly influence the total energy required for breakage. Impact velocities may vary from 1 or 2 fps in crushers to 10 or 20 fps for ball mills, and as high as 100 or more for hammer mills. However, according to the findings of geophysicists, the velocity of sound and of compression waves in stone is many times greater; the primary longitudinal compression waves travel at perhaps 15,000 fps, and the secondary transverse waves, which may reach the surface and cause cracks to form thereon, travel at perhaps 5000 fps. THE present status of the theory of comminution is extremely unsatisfactory. The amount of various ores and rock products crushed and ground annually approaches the staggering sum of perhaps one half billion tons. Yet the basic concepts underlying an operation of such magnitude are unknown, and actual knowledge of what takes place in comminution is almost entirely empirical. The responsibility for this situation cannot be charged to apathy or lack of appreciation of the importance of the problem. • As part of $850,000 granted by the House Appropriations Committee for development of manganese in the U.S., the Bureau of Mines will build a pilot plant at Artillery Peak, Ariz., for development of low grade manganese ores. • The historic Argo tunnel and mill in Idaho Springs, Colo., will reopen shortly for the mining of uranium. The Uranium Co. of America has acquired control of the tunnel and mill and 12 nearby mining properties. J. H. Rodgers and G. C. Ridland will manage the operation. •The opening of a new 4000-ton per day coal mine in Washington Co., Pa., and the reopening of another mine of the same capacity in Fayette Co. has been announced by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. They'll help meet added war demands. •A 7000 bbl per day commercial synthetic liquid fuel plant, making gasoline from natural gas at Brownsville, Texas is being operated by the Carthage Hydro-col Corp., a Texaco subsidiary. The gasoline is produced by the Hydrocol process, chemically similar to the Fischer Tropsch process, but differing mechanically in several ways. To operate the process it has been necessary to build an oxygen plant producing 95 pct pure oxygen in quantities equal to U. S. production of commercial oxygen in 1946. •Over 96 pct of the class of 1950 at Montana School of Mines are now employed,, in industry, and they're scattered from MIT to the island of Cuba., • Cobalt, heretofore almost entirely imported, will soon be produced in Idaho. The Calera Mining Co. is building a 600-ton mill in which a cobalt and copper concentrate will be obtained from Idaho ores. •Plans for mining iron ore on the Conarky Peninsula in French Guinea, (an ECA project) call for equipment purchases as follows: 8 wagon drills, electric shovel for mining, conveyor for the port, 8 trucks, wrecker, 2 tractors, as well as miscellaneous accessories and spare parts. •A low-grade lead-zinc mineralization, located east of any known ore bodies in Utah's East Tintic district, has been located by a 2000-ft wildcat USGS drill hole. * Higher-than-going rates have been authorized by the Munitions Board for its stockpile program, where domestic production of scarce materials is low or uneconomical. Payment in excess of 25 pct over the foreign price is now permitted. •A new self-centering conveyor roll, developed by Carnegie-Illinois Steel, is expected to revolutionize materials handling. It completely eliminates the necessity for sideguides to keep materials on a conveyor. See P. 1028. •Great Britain's socialized coal industry employs twice as many miners, but produces less than half as much coal as America's coal industry. last year, British mines produced 28 million fewer tons of coal than the output of the same ,mines in 1939. Absenteeism amounted to a big 12 pot of working time. • Labor market conditions have tightened on almost a country-wide scale. Only 4 out of 143 major labor market areas have a substantial surplus -- less than half the total for May. Growing scarcities of skilled labor are in evidence.

INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lakeland, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern producers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. THE national interest prompts consideration of any new source of mineral wealth even though the immediate need may be of minor importance. A critical shortage of potash in the United States during the World War of I9I4-I8 stimulated broad development, which established an American potash industry on a basis so sound that this commodity is not even listed as urgent in the present war program. However, this should not minimize its importance, and the need remains, not only for adequate supplies of the usual potash salts (the chloride and the sulphate) but of all potash chemicals. Potassium carbonate (known commercially as pearl ash) has been a high-cost commodity; in consequence, the quantity used by industry has been relatively small. By a combination of fortuitous geographical circumstances, there is opportunity to produce a low-cost potassium carbonate with the possibility that this might become an important source of chemical potash. The following paper considers a recently developed process1 taking advantage of these conditions. WYOMINGITE DEPOSIT For many years it has been known that a deposit of potash-bearing igneous rock known as wyomingite occurs in the southwestern part of Wyoming at Zirkel Mesa, which is 44 miles northeast of the town of Green River (Fig. I). The western escarpment of this deposit is about 3 miles east of the Superior Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. This mesa alone covers approximately 3300 acres, and the average thickness of the wyomingite flow is 75 ft. It has been estimated2 that about one billion tons of wyomingite occur in this one deposit, all of which can be mined by open quarrying without overburden. In addition, there are several smaller deposits within 10 miles, so that the aggregate wyomingite in the area approaches two billion tons. This is one of the world's largest sources of leucite, and the only known deposit of its kind in the United States. The wyomingite (which is in the form of a lava flow and numerous small craters), with the mineral leucite as its most important component, has a mineral composition3 of: leucite, 50 per cent; phlogopite, 15; diopside, I2; kataphorite, 15; glass and apatite, 8. The phlogopite is present in visible phenocrysts 1/8 to 1/2 in. in diameter, but the leucite usually is almost microcrystalline and not capable of liberation by grinding. Chemically, the wyomingite has a potash content averaging slightly higher than eleven per cent K20. The potash is mainly in the leucite, but part of it is in the phlogopite and a small amount is in the feldspars that are occasionally seen as undigested occlusions of the granite country rock, through which the leucite-bearing lava intruded, and as sanidine feldspar both in the crystalline and glassy phases of the rock. The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined because it is used both as a rock term and as a particle size term. Actually most persons using the term clay realize that it has a double meaning and in most instances define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that compose it so that the definition has to be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine-grained material composed largely of a limited group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. Many definitions state that a clay has the property of plasticity when wet, but some clays are not plastic, i.e., halloysite and flint clay; however, most clay materials are plastic when wet. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on some grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 microns as the maximum size. The Wentworth scale' defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 microns. Grim' has found it convenient to use the term clay material for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material and in this way can include clays, shales, or argillites, and some soils if they are argillaceous. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, still the term is generally understood by all who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material and has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. In order to understand better the relationships between the clays and their uses, a brief discussion of the structure, chemical composition, and identification of the clay minerals is given. Mineralogical Composition of Clays Clays are composed of certain groups of hydrous aluminum, magnesium, and iron silicates that may contain calcium, potassium, and other ions, which are called the clay minerals, and other minerals of variable composition, which are nonclay minerals. Both clay minerals and nonclay minerals influence the properties of a clay material. In order to understand the relationship between clay minerals and the properties of a clay material, a short summary of the structure and composition of clay minerals is necessary. Any scheme of classification tends to impose a certain rigidity and as new and additional data become available it is necessary to revise classifications. Brindley3 has discussed the classification and structural mineralogy of clays in very lucid fashion and chose a classification based on structural features and chemical composition. Grim2 proposed a tentative classification which is based on the structural attributes of the various clay minerals. This classification is relatively simple and workable, and is shown as follows: I.
