Single-phase silver antimony telluride has been prepared by zone-melting techniques using initial compositions of A new phase appears upon prolonged annealing of this material, but the reaction does not appear to be a simple eutectoid decomposition. A complete analysis of the phase equilibria is complicated by the slow kinetics involved. The Hall coefficient, magneto -resistance, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient are all sensitive to the presence of second phases. The low Hall mobilities measured for single-phase material indicate that the usual band theory is inadequate to explain the observed transport properties in the system. Density anomalies of up to 2.5 pet between measured and theoretical density were observed but are not conclusive evidence for a defect structure. COMPOSITIONS in the Ag-Sb-Te system have been studied previously by several investigators.1"18 The interest in this system arises from potential thermoelectric applications of alloys on the Ag2Te-Sb2Tes vertical section. Although the composition corresponding to the formula AgSbTe, has received most attention, it has been found to consist of more than one phase.7'8 A thorough understanding of the properties of this heterogeneous material has been impeded by both lack of knowledge of the properties of the homogeneous phases comprising it and the problem of analysis of transport properties in an inhomogeneous system. The present work describes the preparation of the homogeneous ternary phase and the corresponding electrical properties of both homogeneous and heterogeneous material. MATERIAL PREPARATION Most specimens for this investigation were prepared by encapsulating the elements in evacuated quartz tubes after which they were melted and homogenized in the liquid state. The ambient temperature was then dropped to 500°C and the resulting ingot zone melted. The growth rate, width of zone, stoichiometry, and number of passes have an effect on the resultant microstructure. Grains several centimeters in length were easily produced by this method. Other solidification techniques were also used, including uniform slow cooling of the entire specimen and rapid freezing. The microstructures of specimens produced by these techniques frequently differed appreciably from similar compositions prepared by zoning. A variety of nonequilibrium microstructures characterized by long needlelike particles resulted from the rapid-freeze method. PHASE EQUILIBRIA The lack of information on phase equilibria is a major difficulty associated with a comprehensive study of the Ag-Sb-Te system. Considerable confusion has resulted from the use of the formula AgSbTe, to identify the cubic ternary intermediate phase even though it has been established that material of this stoichiometry normally contains AgzTe as a second phase.798 In this paper, silver antimony telluride will denote the cubic ternary intermediate phase comprising the major portion of AgSbTe,. The term "single phase" will denote material which consists of only the cubic phase (as evidenced by metallographic examination and X-ray diffraction) and the term heterogeneous will describe multiphase material containing AgzTe, SbzTe3, or other phases in addition to the cubic phase. The single-phase material may actually contain a variety of inhomogeneities—gradual changes in composition on a macroscopic scale, localized fluctuations in composition, clusters or other products of early stages of the precipitation process, and a variety of point and line defects—all of which will not be detected by the present techniques for determining homogeneity. Single-phase material has been prepared from compositions close to 59 mole pct SbzTe3 21 (this notation refers to the location on the Ag,Te-Sb2TeS vertical section). Zone widths of =2 cm and growth rates 51.2 cm per hr were used. The single-phase region at elevated temperatures extends off the vertical section to a composition which can be expressed approximately as Ag,,SbzgTes,.9 The latter two compositions as well as AgSbTe, are represented in the conventional Gibbs triangle in Fig. 1. The careful work of Gross and Zimmerleyl has established the fact that the energy actually used in grinding is proportional to the new surface produced. This confirmation of Rittinger's law was made by crushing quartz in a frictionless drop-weight machine and determining the surface of the quartz by its rate of solution in hydrofluoric acid. The details of this procedure have been described adequately elsewhere and need not be repeated here. The resultant data furnish the only available basis for comparing accurately the efficiency of grinding machines. This method is so cumbersome experimentally that it has been little used. As an alternative all sorts of approximations have been proposed. The best of these is complete size analysis by sieving and elutria-tion. Such procedure is very lengthy and difficult to carry out accurately. Furthermore, any sizing method becomes very inaccurate for determining surface with very fine sizes where the ratio of surface to volume becomes very large. To avoid the lengthy and difficult technique of elutriation it has been proposed to estimate the size distribution below 200 mesh from various probability formulas. Such a procedure is at best an engineering approximation; at worst it is a mere guess. Some time ago Dr. V. H. Gottschalk2 found that the coercive forces of magnetite powders were directly proportional to the surface area, regardless of size distribution. It was at once apparent that this furnished a method for determining grinding efficiency quickly and accurately. The only requirement was a single determination of the relation between the work input of the Gross-Zimmerley drop-weight machine and the coercive force of the resultant crushed magnetite. Metallurgists have used borax as a fluxing agent traditionally, but until recently elemental boron has played an insignificant role as an alloying element. Neither the metal nor its compounds have been regarded as important metallurgical materials and there is a surprising lack of knowledge concerning their metallurgical behavior. The new applications to steel-making of both boron and borates, which arose in part from wartime incentives and restrictions, have been seriously handicapped by this lack of data. For example, rasorite, a naturally occurring sodium borate, has been shown to be an effective substitute for aluminum as a ladle deoxi-dizer in rimming steels.' Likewise, the effectiveness of boron as an alloying agent has been demonstrated,2,3 giving deep hardening when used in restricted amounts. The exploitation of both of these uses has been retarded by the difficulty of attaining suitable metallurgical control. Recognizing that the most important information required was a knowledge of the equilibrium between boron and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. Gurry4 calculated this relation from the best thermal data available. However, estimates of the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid iron and the activity coefficient of B2O3 in slag were involved, and experimental work on this problem was obviously desirable. The experiments to be described were planned to establish the boron-oxygen relations in liquid iron and to demonstrate at the same time the ferroborate slag compositions in equilibrium with various amounts of oxygen in liquid iron. Accordingly, slags containing varying proportions of iron and boron oxides were held in contact with molten iron, and samples of both slag and metal were analyzed. The limitations upon the accuracy of the data will be considered, but in a practical sense the oxygen levels that can be attained in iron by iron borate slags, and the amounts of boron in iron at these oxygen levels were established. Experimental Procedure No entirely suitable refractory was found for the mixtures of iron oxide and boron oxide used as slags. Crucibles of silica, magnesia, Ramix, beryllia, and zirconia were all tried unsuccessfully. The must satisfactory method discovered for handling them was the rotating-crucible technique, which creates a parabolic crucible of liquid iron.5,6 Even this was not entirely successful, for at steelmaking temperatures (1600°C.) the slags had such a low surface tension that they crept up to the refractory and slowly dissolved it. These difficulties made it impossible to maintain a constant slag composition for an unlimited period Of time. However, by using the rotating technique, short runs could be made in

OVER 55 years ago, Sieverts and Hagenacker1 and Donnan and shaw2 made determinations of the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver, over a rather short range of temperatures (973° to 1125°C), using quartz bulbs, mainly at 1 atm. From the results of their investigations, Mizikar, Grace, and parlee3 plotted % O vs 1/T and obtained the following straight-line equation for solubility at 1 atm: log % O = 723.7/T - 1.0949 Recent work on the kinetics of the Ag-O2 system394 indicated there might have been some error due to reaction with the direct heated silica bulbs. Thus it became important to redetermine the solubility with the silver contained in a better refractory such as alumina, and by induction heating where the walls of the container were not so strongly heated. It was also desirable to extend the temperature range. A modified Sieverts apparatus of fairly standard type was used except that a special type of reaction tube was employed, Fig. 1. Dried argon with a guaranteed purity of 99.9 pet, and dried medical-grade oxygen with a guaranteed purity of 99.6 pet containing a little nitrogen, were the gases used. The measuring system consisted essentially of a manometer and a water-jacketed 100-cc gas buret with an open-end vertical tube parallel to the buret. This tube has the same diameter as the buret in order to give the same capillary effect on the mercury. A screw leveling device was used with the buret leveling bulb to help provide accurate pressure readings. A 2-mm ID capillary line connected the buret to the reaction chamber, helping to reduce the dead volume, which was determined with argon. The heating medium was a 2.5-kw output induction furnace. The induction coil was made of a 3/16-in. copper tubing with eight turns and an inside diameter of 4 cm. The reaction bulb was made of a quartz tube 18 cm long and 3 cm in inside diameter, Fig. 1. Inside the quartz tube were two alumina crucibles (Mor-ganite Triangle RR, XN10 and XN5) one inside the other. Below these two was an alumina disk. The disk prevented the corners of the outer crucible from expanding against the quartz tube. The solid sample (99.994 + pet Ag), which had been previously cleaned by air oxidation and repeated removal of scum, was placed inside the inner crucible. An alumina disk with a hole at the center covered the two crucibles. In order to decrease the dead volume, an evacuated quartz "filler" tube was placed on top of the crucible cover. The part of the reaction tube above the spherical joint was made up of Pyrex glass with a flat glass top. It was here that a prism was placed to facilitate the use of an optical pyrometer, previously calibrated at the freezing point of silver. The nucleation rate of the a (pay) to 0 (white) tin transformation was measured as a function of temperature and a tin particle size using an X-ray diffraction technique. The powder specimens of a tin were essentially monodisperse and the small dinzension of the particles of these specimens was varied from 13 to 75 p. Several types of nucleation sites of differing potency were fbund to be operative in the nucleation process, but it could not be determined whether these sites were on the free surface of the tin particles or within the volume. Assuming that they were on the free surface, the average density of the most potent sites was calculated to be 2.5 to 5.3 x 10' sites per sq cnz through the application of a Poisson distribztion finction to the isothermal data. Analysis of the temperature dependence' of the rate constmts at a given fraction transformed suggests that the active sites are regions of higher free energy and not catalytic interfaces. Appreciable induction periods were observed at the lower temperatures of transformation. Experimental studies1 of solid-solid phase transformations have led to the belief that the new phase nucleates at structural imperfections. The purpose of the present work was to learn more about the mechanism of nucleation in solids and the nature of the singularities at which nucleation occurs. In this investigation nucleation rates in the isothermal transformation of gray to white tin were measured by an X-ray diffraction technique using essentially monodisperse powders of gray tin. This particular phase transformation was chosen for study because it presented fewer experimental difficulties than most others. The experimental temperature-control problems were minimal because the two phases coexist in equilibrium at 13.3"C, and measurable transformation rates occur at temperatures only slightly above room temperature. The growth rate of the P phase into the a2 is sufficiently fast to make the measured transformation rate equivalent to the nucleation rate, provided that the particle size of the samples is small enough; for the experimental temperatures used in this study, the particle diameter must be less than 100 p. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The P tin used in this study was obtained from Capper Pass and Son Ltd., North Ferriby, Yorkshire, England, and was of 99.999 pct purity. It was transformedS to the a phase and ground into a fine powder in an agate mortar. This powder was separated by a Roller air classifier into seven fractions whose dimensions, as determined by microscopic measurement of many thousands of particles, are given in Table I and whose distribution of size within each fraction is given in Figs. 1 and 2. A MINERAL can best be defined as a phase,' where the term "phase" is described as a homogeneous,* physically distinct, and mechanically sep- arable portion of a system. If one phase develops from another, certain nuclei must first be available.2.394 The manner in which new material is added to these nuclei, and the subsequent structural and other characteristics of the phase, is often markedly influenced by factors other than its temperature, pressure, and gross compositional environment. Rates of growth, presence of impurities, the availability or lack of oxygen, the pH of the system, and percentage of completion of the often determine which modification will develop. Many transitional phases develop when a relatively insoluble precipitate is formed from solution. Different modifications are formed, depending on the speed and percentage of reacting solution added. Some of these "forms" are stable and do not "age" or transform into the so-called stable modifications. These modifications are difficult to treat in terms of equilibrium diagrams for the simple reason that these minerals do not represent an equilibrium situation described by only two (temperature and composition) or three terms (when pressure is considered). Many crystals exist as stable or meta- stable phases in nature in environments much different from those indicated by certain equilibrium diagrams. The outstanding developments of the year in southwestern Pennsylvania were the establishment of the Summit Fayette County gas pool and the gas pool in Nicholson township, Fayette County, and Monongahela township, Greene County, as major producing areas, and the indication of four new shallow gas pools. Curtailment of drilling for shallow gas is expected to follow order M68 of the Office of Production Management. Gas completions were approximately 70 per cent higher, oil completions nearly 25 per cent lower, dry holes were unchanged and drilling wells as of Dec. 31, 1941, nearly loo per cent higher than last year. Shallow Development Oil.—Outside Butler County, only 11 producers were drilled, with a total initial of 221 bbl. The best of these was in a portion of Gilmore township, Greene County, which ordinarily produces gas. This well flowed 77 bbl. in 11 hr., along with about one million cubic feet of gas from the Fourth (U.Dev.) sand. Washington County had a 10.20 and a 25-bbl. well in Morris township and a 20-bbl. well in South Franklin township. These were all in the Fifth Sand. The price of oil to Jan. 27 was $1.80 per barrel, when a 15¢ increase was made. This was followed by a raise of 20¢ on Apr. 23, 15¢ on May 21, 20¢ on June 18 and 25¢ on Aug. 14. The last increase was canceled on Aug. 23 by the Office of Price Administration, which pegged southwestern Pennsylvania crude at $2.40 per barrel. Gas.—An almost doubled initial production of natural gas is the result of the large increase in number of wells drilled. The outstanding discovery of the year was in the vicinity of Armbrust, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where a well drilled to what at first was considered the Bayard sand, but what is now known to be the Fifth (U.Dev.) sand, at 2100 ft. found nearly 5 million cu. ft. of gas. Since this completion 14 wells have been finished, only one of which was dry, giving a combined total open flow of approximately 15 million cu. ft. The sand is 35 to 40 ft. thick and the saturation extends through most of that thickness. Rock pressure, which is 1040 lb. per sq. in., is abnormally high. An area of only about one square mile has been proven but some of the 24 new wells drilling as of Dec. 31 will no doubt extend it considerably. This development has taken place in an area heretofore considered to have had little prospect. There were three good wells in other parts of Westmoreland County. One well in Franklin township, which had 12 million cu. ft, of gas in the Fifth sand, was entirely surrounded by dry holes but is still pro- . ducing at a high rate. In Bell township a 1.6 million cu. ft. well was found in the Speechley (U.Dev.) sand and in Washington township the same sand produced 2.7 million cu. ft. with shut-in pressure of 970 Ib. at 2820 ft. This well is offset by two dry holes and one well with a capacity of only 10 M cubic feet.

The outstanding discovery of the year was in the vicinity of Armbrust, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where a well drilled to what at first was considered the Bayard sand, but what is now known to be the Fifth (U.Dev.) sand, at 2100 ft. found nearly 5 million cu. ft. of gas. Since this completion 14 wells have been finished, only one of which was dry, giving a combined total open flow of approximately 15 million cu. ft. The sand is 35 to 40 ft. thick and the saturation extends through most of that thickness. Rock pressure, which is 1040 lb. per sq. in., is abnormally high. An area of only about one square mile has been proven but some of the 24 new wells drilling as of Dec. 31 will no doubt extend it considerably. This development has taken place in an area heretofore considered to have had little prospect. There were three good wells in other parts of Westmoreland County. One well in Franklin township, which had 12 million cu. ft, of gas in the Fifth sand, was entirely surrounded by dry holes but is still pro- . ducing at a high rate. In Bell township a 1.6 million cu. ft. well was found in the Speechley (U.Dev.) sand and in Washington township the same sand produced 2.7 million cu. ft. with shut-in pressure of 970 Ib. at 2820 ft. This well is offset by two dry holes and one well with a capacity of only 10 M cubic feet.

The annealing behavior and the mechanism of re-orientation during recrystallization of iodide titanium cold-rolled 94 pct have been studied in detail. Results indicate that recrystallization occurs by the nucleation and growth of new grains, as in other common metals. Recrystallization nuclei form by the coalescence of subgraim, and the change in texture as a result of recrystallization is largely due to selective growth among the nuclei formed. The annealing of titanium is characterized by a wide range of overlap of the various stages of the annealing process, which may be responsible for a range of activation energies observed, and for the apparently gradual change in the annealing texture as a function of time or temperature. The deformation and recrystallization characteristics of titanium and zirconium are very similar. In cold-rolled strip, the deformation texture consists of two symmetrically oriented components, each having the basal plane laterally tilted at about 30 deg from the rolling plane and the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction. Upon annealing for recrystallization, the change in texture can be described, for simplicity,* as rotations around [0001].2'6'8 According to McGeary and Lustman,' recrystallization occurs in zirconium through normal growth of the subgrains, which they called "domains", without the nucleation of new grains; and the magnitude of rotation around the [0001] axis increases gradually during the progress of recrystallization. If these conclusions were true, the mechanism of recrystallization in zirconium would be basically different from that in most metals, since it is commonly known that recrystallization with reori-entation always involves the migration of high-angle boundaries. In an attempt to clarify the situation, the mechanism of reorientation during recrystallization in iodide titanium cold-rolled 94 pct was studied in detail. The structural and textural changes upon annealing at various temperatures were examined by optical and transmission-electron microscopy, X-ray pole figures, pole density distribution measurements, and micro-beam techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. An iodide titanium crystal bar was are-melted and solidified in a cold-hearth crucible under a purified argon atmosphere. The solidified ingot had dimensions of approximately 3 by 1/2 by 3 in. One face of the ingot was somewhat uneven, but was as clean and shiny as the remaining parts of the ingot. Large grains with a Widmanstatten internal structure were clearly shown on the shiny surfaces, indicating the occurrence of P — a transformation upon rapid cooling from the melt. Analysis of the are-melted ingot indicated C 0.033, N 0.010, H 0.013, 0 0.002 in weight percent, and traces of iron, copper, and silicon as detectable impurities. The ingot was cold-rolled -40 pct to 0.300 in. thick with a reduction of 0.005 in. per pass. The defects on the uneven side of the ingot were then removed by machining. This reduced the thickness to 0.285 in. The piece was then recrystallized by annealing at 800°C for 1 hr in a fused silica boat charged into a fused silica tube furnace under a vacuum of 10~5 mm Hg. To refine the grain size, the recrystallized metal was again cold-rolled 40 pct to 0.170 in., then annealed at 700°C for 1 hr. These treatments yielded a strip with a uniform equiaxed grain structure, having a penultimate average grain diameter of 0.04 mm and a hardness of approximately 90 Dph. Final rolling reduced the thickness from 0.170 to 0.010 in., corresponding to a reduction of 94 pct. The strip was rolled in both directions by reversing end for end between passes. Surface lubrication was provided by oil-soaked pads attached to both rolls. Specimens of 1 in. length (for X-ray examinations) and +in. length (for hardness and microstructure examinations) were cut from the rolled strip, and a width of & in. was cut from the edges of each specimen by a jeweler's saw. These specimens were then etched in a solution of 10 cu cm HN03, 5 cu cm HF, and 50 cu cm H,O to 0.008 in. thick to remove the surface metal, as well as the distorted metal at the saw cuts, prior to annealing or measurements. To minimize any surface reaction with the atmosphere, all specimens were kept in an evacuated desiccator. Isothermal Anneals. All annealing treatments were conducted in vacuum in a fused silica tube furnace as described earlier. The temperature of the furnace was controlled to within *2"C. The specimen was placed in a fused silica boat, then pushed into the hot zone of the furnace. It took about 5 to 6 min for the specimen to reach the furnace temperature. After the specimen was held at temperature for a desired length of time the boat was pulled to the cold zone of the furnace; the heating-up period was excluded from the isothermal annealing time. Thus, the uncertainty in annealing time is higher for very short anneals, but negligible for long anneals.

Introduction Competitive analysis is the collection and evaluation of data on a product, a product line or on an entire industry. Much of the focus of competitive analysis centers on production volume and the price targets of the competitors. In actual practice capacity may be used in place of production volume. Similarly, unit production costs and individual producing units - mines, mills, smelters, refineries - may be the targets of the analysis. The purpose of competitive analysis is to provide information for strategic planning. The analysis will locate the position of the company in the industry and define the competitive margin -- or lack of a margin - between the company and other producers. The analysis can show the current situation and may be expanded to examine the outlook for the future. The forecast option is particularly valuable because it will show the opportunities for new project development or the expansion of current production. Similarly, the forecast will show the potential threat from new entrants, and may provide early warning to reconsider operations that may become uncompetitive in the future. Production cost analysis is a clearly understood means to evaluate producers and estimate the outlook for their profitability. The cumulative cost for the industry outlines the supply structure and defines the marginal cost of production used in developing price forecast as explained in the sub- sequent section of this paper. Competitive analysis is particularly important to the mining industry, notably to metal producers. The final product is typically a purified metal conforming to standards, and interchangable with the output of other producers, i.e. a fungible commodity. Brand loyalty is questionable in the mineral industry. Consumers will show a preference for specific brands, but this preference will be limited to a premium of several percent over the general market price. Price and assurance of supply are the keys to marketing success. Assurance of supply depends on geopolitical considerations and production capabilities. Price will be closely related to cost of production and a thorough competitive analysis should describe the cost structure of the industry. This snapshot will locate one's own position and provide an immediate and readily understandable evaluation of the hazards and opportunities inherent in this position. In the following section we shall discuss elements, methods and sources for competitive evaluation. ELEMENTS OF COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS The practice of systematic collection and analysis of data on competition is hardly a new concept; see, for example, Wall (1) or Porter (2). However, most discussions have been in the context of conventional industrial or manufacturing industries, with a focus on product lines and brand marketing. These considerations are not irrelevant to mining but they do have only a limited application. The key to success in the mining industry is minimizing the cost of production. However, this simple concept becomes complex when we consider relevant costs and the planning horizon. Production costs include the factors consumed in production, namely labor, fuel, energy, materials and supplies. The cost also includes purchased and contracted services such as freight, smelting and refining, sampling and sales required to convert ore to the finished metal. Royalties and ad valorem taxes paid on gross production are direct expenses, as is the cost of administration required by the production units. The sum of these outflows is the total cash cost, the expense that has to be paid in cash in order to continue production. Indirect costs incurred by a producer will commonly include allocated headquarters expenses, as well as the capital charges associated with equity investment and debt. Profit is not generally considered an indirect cost even though it represents the cost of using the owner's capital; similarly, income taxes represent the government's participation in the profits of the enterprise. Interest payments are considered as a direct expense in some cost studies, but many competitive evaluations would consider

The properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compania de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compania Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Pig. 1.) Geology The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rooks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.
