INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lake-land, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern pro-ducers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This informa-tion has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered.

New techniques in the magnetite and heavy media beneficiation industries demand more efficient magnetic dispersion and flocculation of the finely ground particles. Demagnetizing coils must produce several major effects, such as improving classification and screening efficiency, decreasing moisture content in filter cake and improving separation selectivity and green pellet properties. Likewise, magnetic flocculators must increase filtering rates and the settling rates of solids, improve magnetite recovery and produce cleaner water. To improve the design of equipment and to conduct tests leading to the optimization of such dispersion and flocculation, a program was initiated at Eriez Magnetics. The major conclusions reached are: 1. Laboratory and plant scale tests conducted on magnetite products show that a demagnetizing force of 450 rms oersteds at 60 cycles for 1/20- second duration will depolarize natural magnetite particles coarser than approximately 10 microns. This has been found satisfactory for most applications. 2. Effective flocculation of magnetite was obtained when a slurry with more than one percent magnetite was exposed for a period of approximately 1/15 second to a 600-gauss field. 3. The cost of demagnetizers (or flocculators) increases rapidly for larger diameter pipes. In order to reduce the cost, narrow rectangular sections are recommended for magnetic flocculators. 4. For minimum operating cost, permanent magnetic flocculators are ideal, chiefly because they do not require any maintenance and have no operating cost. 5. A newly designed electro-demagnetizing coil with high heat dissipation and a nonmetallic core provides high efficiency and long life. 6. To select the correct magnetic flocculator (or demagnetizing coil) the following information is necessary: a. Magnetic product susceptibility b. Magnetic product coercive force c. Percent of magnetic product d. Flow rate e. Viscosity f. Structure of magnetic product

In these days of the almost exclusive use of byproduct coke as the blast-furnace fuel in this country, it may seem out of place, and smacking too much of reminiscing, to say anything about the use of anthracite coal for blast-furnace fuel. Viewed in the light of present day research and of developments in alloy steel, some observations seem appropriate regarding this raw material that played such an important part in the development of the iron and steel industry during 50 years of the past century. The research work of that period, in which the whole iron and steel industry was revolutionized, passing from wrought iron to steel and from charcoal to three new mineral fuels for blast furnaces, was done chiefly in the full-sized plants of that day; and it was done largely by the ironmasters themselves. The laboratory had not become a part of the ironworks, and scientific instruments were lacking around the blast furnaces; "rule o' thumb" and erroneous theories prevailed—and have not yet all been eliminated. The recent interest in meteoric iron in connection with nickel steels and other alloys proves that it is worth while to search for the reasons for excellence and the causes for failures in the metallurgy of bygone days. Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissen-hainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

THIS paper is a description of the opera¬tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery of The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a pre¬liminary description given at the Anthracite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Sift for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size operating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig 1 and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which handles the Breaker waste water. This underflow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped .to vibrating screens where the plus 316-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). The area that produces Pennsylvania grade, which includes New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and a part of Ohio, increased its production in 1942 about 1,580,000 bbl. over that attained in 1941. Such an increase is substantial for this area, and measured in terms of increased output of lubricants, for which the crude is particularly suitable, it represents a needed arid worth-while addition to the lubricant resources of the United States. The year 1942 was a difficult operating period for most of the petroleum-producing areas in the United States, but the Appalachian region, owing principally to its location, type of operations, and crude value, suffered less from war influences than other areas. The state of Pennsylvania produced 17,823,870 bbl. of crude oil, which is approximately 63 per cent of the total production of Pennsylvania grade in the entire area. Production Bradford Field The Bradford field, which produces almost wholly by water-flooding methods, increased its production nearly 4000 bbl. per day over 1941 despite a very slight reduction in total number of wells completed. Well completions in the Bradford field (in both New York and Pennsylvania) includc both producing oil wells and water-intake wells. About half of the well completions are producing oil wells and the remaining half are water-intake or injection wells. About 10 per cent of the total well completions of the Bradford field were in Cattaraugus County, New York. No segregation of well completions is available, so that precise statistics cannot be given for New York and Pennsylvania.

THE CHAIRMAN (HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J).-This excellent paper fills a gap in our Transactions and is most acceptable. In the early days another way of casting tire ingots, sometimes called cheeses, because of their shape, was to use a 22-gage sheet-iron cylindrical can for each ingot of the proper size to give the weight desired. These cans were bottom cast in groups, usually of four, each can being surrounded by a heavy iron ring somewhat taller than itself the top of the can being covered by a circular cast-iron plate having a small conical riser in the center, about 2 ½ in. in diameter at the bottom and 10 in. high. The top plate was clamped down to resist the upward pressure of the fluid metal and the space between the can and the outer ring, usually about 2 in. wide, was filled with dry sand. The riser permitted the escape of some of the air displaced by the steel and also increased the pressure in the steel when the mold was filled, and so diminished somewhat the tendency for gas holes to form. But little was known of segregation and pipe in those days, though the center of an ingot was understood to be the worst part, and it was separated in part in the disk which was punched out in perforating the ingot. This disk was about 8 in. in diameter and from ¾ to 2 in. thick, the variation in thickness being to rectify the weight. When an ingot was too -heavy, a thicker disk-was made by not driving the punch in quite as far as when the ingot-weight was right. Then the bloom was turned over and the punch driven in on the other side, which finished the punching and detached the disk. The tire bloom was then" becked" and later reheated and rolled as described in the paper. The forging was done with a 10-ton double-acting steam hammer. The steel generally speaking had lower carbon, from 0.45 to 0.55 per cent., than tires today have, and the tires were smaller, the most common size of ingot weighing 1,060 lb. each. BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.-This paper was specially requested by the Iron and Steel Committee, because that Committee thought so important an industry should have its history written by one who was familiar with it, and before he had forgotten, or all the rest of the world had forgotten, its early stages. Mr. Aertsen has said that it is not an exhaustive research. I think it would not be any different if it were an exhaustive research, because our library made a careful attempt to find some written light on the history of these tires, but very little was found.

Reliable and detailed statistical data available for Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia are the most meager and unsatisfactory of any of the producing states. Detailed histories and statistics are available for only a few pools. The antiquity of these pools, loose nomenclature, particularly where several names are applied to the same pool or various parts of the pool or a new namsed when the pool was rediscovered, made the collection of accurat historical and statistical data almost impossible. So many of the data reported are unreliable that a breakdown by pools or even by counties, until more accurate information is available, would lead to gross errors. Rather than perpetuate inaccuracies, we have endeavored to go to original sources wherever possible, sift these and provide data that may serve as an incentive and basis for future work. The necessity for accurate information is thoroughly recognized by the operators, particularly because of the effect of recent government regulations and request? for data in connection with the preparation of the various codes a pending legislation. Producers, both major operating companies and individuals, . freely given their time and assistance in the compilation of these data. Valuable information was obtained from tax records, rate cases, statistics published by the oil and gas publications and the Bureau of Mines. So many individuals cooperated in the preparation of these data that individual credit cannot be given. Undoubtedly many errors will be found. Some of the data are open to controversy, and many have been omitted in the hope that new information of a more reliable character may become available. Other omissions are due to an inability to contact the proper individuals, many of whom are no longer connected with this industry. Pennsylvania grade crude sold in 1933 for the lowest price since 1895. Gas production could not find sufficient new markets to fill the void left by industrial stagnation. In the gas industry, where the market price is fixed by contract, uncertainty persisted because of impending legislative action affecting both taxes and utility rates. The variation of elastic modulus with terrzperature between -150° and 600°C has been investigated. Compounds close to equiatomic cornposition exhibit very low modulus values and very high damping near room temperature. The modulus rises steeply with both decreasing and increasing temperature. The modulus minimum and the high damping are believed to be connected with a martensitic transformation of TiNi. In bulk material this transition takes place slightly above room temperature quite rapidly and reversibly, with a hysteresis of some 30°C, depending on the Ti:Ni ratio. Oxygen impurity affects the reaction time. THE inter metallic compound TiNi has been reported to exist in an ordered CsCl (B2) structure,l-6 the homogeneity range varying rather markedly with temperature.7 Some investigators reported this compound to decompose peritectoidally to Ti2Ni and TiNi, between 650° and 800°C,3 or below,',g the latter workers also suggesting the decomposition to be strain-sensitive. Purdy and Parr were the first to report a structural transformation to a new, possibly hexagonal, structure at 36°C,7 a temperature indubitably too low to allow the significant amount of diffusion necessary for a peritectoid reaction. Mechanical-property investigations of compositions close to TiNi just above room temperature have qualitatively shown remarkable anomalies, particularly with respect to clamping,' and to a "memory" effect, that is, plastically deformed material returning to its original shape on being heated through the "decomposition" temperature.9 The original explanation of this effect—based on the apparent experimental observation of Ti2Ni or TiNi, formation in the material subjected to tensile or compressive stresses, respectivelp—does not appear plausible. It appeared more probable that the change involved may be a martensitic, diffusionless structural transformation, similar to those observed in other B2 structures such as 0 brass,'' AuCd,ll and AuZn.12 The existence of such transformation has been established recently,', although the symmetry of the low-temperature structure is not yet known. The present paper describes the elastic modulus and damping behavior of polycrystalline TiNi in both structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. All the specimens to be investigated were prepared from premelted electrolytic nickel and iodide titanium by nonconsumable arc melting and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. The cast billets were canned in mild steel, extruded, and swaged to approximately 0.375 in. diam. The cans were then removed by pickling or machining. Preliminary material balance checks indicated no significant weight losses on melting (less than 5 mg on a 50-g button); hence nominal compositions have been used throughout. In agreement with previously reported observations7 no single-phase material was obtained at—or close to—Ti 1.00 Ni1.00 a small amount of finely divided second phase always being present. It was found that most of the oxygen impurity was associated with this minor phase, which was identified as oxygen-bearing Ti2Ni—possibly Ti,Ni,O. THE life of thermocouples is governed, to a large extent, by the protection they receive when in use; particularly when the temperatures being measured are high and the products of combustion are reducing in character. Several types of protection tubes are being used for this work; they are made of ordinary and aluminous porcelain, fused quartz, carborundum, fused alumina, fireclay, and some kinds of metal. All of them may render good service under certain conditions but they must be used for the purpose for which they are intended. For example, fused-quartz tubes are very good when excessive changes in temperature occur, but under certain conditions they will crystallize and lose their strength. Porcelain is used in several ways in connection with the use of thermocouples: for insulating the two wires of the couple and to. prevent short circuits; for protecting the entire couple in a refractory gas-tight tube, which is ordinarily fastened to and is considered part of a properly equipped thermocouple; and for protecting the complete thermocouple from the possibility of physical injury and to support it. This tube is made porous and strong and is ordinarily built right into the wall or crown of the furnace, as the case may be. The insulating tubes must be small and sufficiently refractory to withstand the temperatures at which they are to be used. The length of the tubes, porosity of the material from which they are made, etc. does not particularly matter. The tubes are sometimes made with two or even four holes, the latter being used where it is desirable to have two couples as close together as possible for calibration work. The thermocouple protection tube must be of proper size to permit the thermoelements and insulating tubes to be inserted or taken out easily. It must be porous enough to withstand sudden changes in temperature and yet gas-tight, as well as refractory enough to withstand the furnace temperature, even if the tube protrudes into the furnace in a horizontal position without support for a reasonable distance. As DEVELOPED up to the end of the Great War, an airplane was essentially a mechanism of wood and fabric, joined and held together by metal fittings and, fastening. The engine and accessories, wire for wheel spokes and other tension members, and the occasional use of metal for interplane struts and the shafts of surface controls required some metal, but essentially it was a. wood and fabric structure. Attempts had been made to use metal for other purposes, such as struts in the drag-trussing of wing panels and for short interplane struts, and Junkers had produced an airplane of iron in 1915. By 1917 he was using steel tubes and duralu-min sheets, securing noteworthy advantages aerodynamically and from the standpoint of weigh PRINCIPLES OF AIRPLANE CONSTRUCTION The loaded weight of airplanes ranges from 500 lb. for the light plane of which we heard so much a short time ago, to about 40,000 lb. The great majority of planes range from 2000 to 10,000 lb. Of this weight from 15. to 30 per cent. is for the dividend-earning load. This percentage is so low that every per cent. saved on the rest of the weight increases the pay load from 3 to 6 per cent. The economic value of every pound that can be saved in designing or constructing a plane is sufficiently great to warrant spending money on refined methods of structural analysis, materials of superior strength properties for a given weight, methods of manufacture which may make possible the use of refinements in structural design, and the like, to an extent unknown heretofore.

IN 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ, one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect, which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and, reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in, reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to, reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are-spared the necessity of using a messenger, because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which auto-matically and continually conveys messages from underneath. DETAILED knowledge of purchase specifications established by coal consumers is essential to the successful design and operation of a coal-preparation plant. ANTHRACITE Specifications should be considered by both the consumer and the producer as guide posts outlining a certain path for both to follow. Plants differ, therefore specifications must differ to meet the varied requirements. Specifications are not of themselves a "cure all" or an assurance of complete satisfaction in fuel utilization. Specifications should not be regarded as a license to engage in an orgy of buying any and all coals that may happen to fall within their limits. This would lead to the-indiscriminate mixing of coals which may vary in their burning characteristics. Different coals of equal grade tend to be individualistic in their burning characteristics. Rather, specifications should be used to help simplify coal selection, to reduce the actual number of coals used over a given period; in other words, to have a stabilizing influence on coal or customer turnover. In the final analysis, the use of too many coals per year in a plant is costly to both the consumer and the producer. Too many sources usually result in higher operating and maintenance costs for the consumer and higher sales costs for the producer. Finally, the statement included in the report accompanying the comprehensive Coal Selection Charts prepared by the Coal Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and released in 1938, is significant. This Committee worked diligently for a period of 15 years seeking to find a scientific and reliable method for selecting coals. The two following paragraphs are quoted from its report: More important is the fact that no ready-made classification or set of specifications can possibly replace the judgment and resourcefulness of an experienced combustion engineer, or fuel technologist, nor the usual need for full scale plant tests under the exact conditions of use before a final decision is made . . .

The Pinto Valley, Arizona, plant of Cities Service Company is one of the newest copper producers in the United States, having started production in 1975. It is located a few miles west of Miami, Arizona, on the site of the Castle Dome Mine, a World War II operation which was shut down and its mill later moved and renamed the Copper Cities plant. The Pinto Valley concentrator uses six 18 ft (5. 5 m) diameter by 21 ft (6.4 m) long, 4000 hp, single-stage ball mills, taking crushed ore from four 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and eight 7 ft shorthead crushers. It has a design capacity of 40,000 stpd but has higher tonnage capability for an expanded concentrator. The copper porphyry-ore is mined by two 15 yd and one 20 yd shovels (11.5 and 15.3 cu m) and is transported to the primary crusher by 150-ton trucks. The dump pocket is relatively shallow (14 ft or 4. 27 m deep); and because of the width necessary for the 150-ton trucks, it was designed to use the ore itself instead of manganese steel as an abrasion- resistant lining, although a heavy steel cap protects the dump pocket top edge. The pocket has a capacity of 300 tons of ore. Water sprays under the dumping positions direct a fog toward the truck being dumped for excellent dust control. Breaking of oversize is done by a hydraulic impact breaker mounted on a hydraulically operated articulated arm situated at the side of the dump pocket. Again because of the shallow pocket, no splitter is used to protect the spider of the 60 in. by 89 in. Traylor gyratory crusher, which is equipped with a hydroset mechanism. Crushed ore at 8 in. (203 mm) drops into the 360 st surge chamber lined with AR plate and then is fed directly to the 60 in. (1.52 m) stock- pile conveyor by an 84 in. by 20 ft (2. 13 m by 6.1 m) four-speed apron feeder at a rate of up to 4000 stph. Early in 1977, Cities Service will replace the four -speed electric drive with a hydraulic pump and motor with infinitely variable speed. They are also studying the replacement of the apron feeder with an 8 ft wide (2.44 m) belt feeder similar to those at Similkameen and Palabora. Peak crushing capacity would then be increased to 5000 stph. The AR plate in the crushed ore pocket was installed in large, rectangular sheets which required much less embedded metal to hold it in place than would the more conventional, smaller arid square pieces of cast manganese steel. For duty in the crushed ore pocket, where wear is not severe, the AR plate is a satisfactory material. The new Palabora Figure-8 crusher also uses this design.

IN earlier work the effect of manganese on the general behavior of nitrogen in iron was the subject of a careful examination by Fast.' Part of the investigation was made, in collaboration with one of the present authors (L.J.D.), by using the internal friction method. This technique, which has been described elsewhere,' showed some significant changes in the properties of Fe-N alloys by the addition of a small amount of manganese namely: 1—Under standard conditions the maximum of the nitrogen peak in pure iron appears around 20 °C and the half width is about 27 °C. By addition of 0.5 atomic pct Mn a general broadening of the internal friction peak occurs. The half width is increased by about 9°C. Moreover, a shift of the maximum of about 5°C toward a higher temperature takes place, Fig. 2. 2—The precipitation of nitrogen from the supersaturated solution, measured, e.g., at 200 °C, was inhibited by the addition of the amount of manganese given in effect 1. The broadening of the nitrogen peak was confirmed in more recent work3 on samples which were prepared from Westinghouse Puron iron. The effect of manganese on the rate of precipitation, however, was much less striking than in the earlier work' based on Philips high purity iron. Theory To explain the first change in properties just referred to, effect 1, the following two assumptions were made:' First, every manganese atom in sub-stitutional solid solution creates around it six interstices located between an iron and a manganese atom, as is evident from Fig. 1. These interstices, conveniently called Fe-Mn interstices, have for nitrogen a free energy level which is AG* lower than the normal Fe-Fe interstices between two iron atoms. For such low concentrations of manganese as 0.5 atomic pct, the possibility that two manganese atoms will be nearest neighbors can be disregarded. Second, it is assumed that in addition to the normal relaxation time TFe at least one new relaxation time, Mn, Fe, enters in the phenomena which is associated with the elementary diffusion jumps between a Fe-Mn interstice and an adjacent Fe-Fe interstice. Fig. 1 gives schematically the free energy for a nitrogen atom as a function of its position along the line ABC. A tentative analysis of the nitrogen peak in a 0.5 pct Fe-Mn alloy based on these assumptions has been made in Fig. 2. The dotted curve with a maximum at 22°C is caused by jumps between Fe-Fe interstices, the dotted curve with maximum at 32°C by jumps between an Fe-Mn and an Fe-Fe interstice. WHEN Charles Martin Hall invented the electrolytic process for the production of aluminum, one basic requirement was a supply of pure alumina. Now, more than 50 years later, the same requirement still holds, and there are no technical straws in the wind to indicate that this situation is likely to change. Long ago, Aluminum Company of America took a number of steps to see that this country should not face shortages of alumina and aluminum in time of emergency. As one step to this end, the Company developed and used a supply of bauxite in South America in order to conserve dwindling Arkansas reserves. Another, and more a program than a step, was to investigate every type of process that might bear the possibility of utilizing the low-grade ores of aluminum that are more plentiful than bauxite. It is a long story, but the investigation included electric-furnace processes, acid extraction processes and alkaline extraction processes, with or without preliminary furnace and sinter treatments. Some of the processes developed were operated in commercial production. This work has been continuous since the first World War. The turn of the wheel came sooner than was expected when, in 1942, bauxite shipments through the Caribbean became uncertain and hazardous through the operation of submarines. The tremendous requirements of aluminum for the war effort were consuming high-grade bauxite at an alarming rate and a national search for substitutes began. High-grade bauxites, for technical and economic reasons, have been defined as those containing about 7 per cent or less of silica. While bauxite of this grade was limited in amount in the United States, there was in sight a substantially greater volume of low-grade, high-silica bauxite not amenable to economic treatment by the Bayer process, but richer in alumina than the clays or other available low-grade ores. It was at this point, and after several years of intensive research on this particular phase of the problem, that Aluminum Research Laboratories brought to completion the invention of one of its research staff, which made practical the utilization of large reserves of low-grade bauxite in America. BAYER PROCESS The Bayer process has been almost universally used for the 'production of alumina from bauxite. This process, in outline, comprises the digestion of finely ground bauxite in a solution of caustic soda (NaOH) under pressure and at an elevated temperature. Alumina in the bauxite goes into solution as sodium aluminate and the impurities-oxides of iron, titanium and silicon-remain undissolved. The undissolved residue, known as "red mud," from its color, is separated and run to waste. Aluminum hydrate (A1202.3H20) is precipitated from the solution of sodium aluminate, and the liquor containing the caustic soda and some alumina is returned to the process for digesting more bauxite. Around 4500 B.C., the Pharaoh of Egypt ordered a military campaign to the Sinai Peninsula and the shores of the Red Sea, to search for copper deposits which Egypt needed for jewelry, vases and weapons.5 To my knowledge, this is the first recorded expedition aimed at the discovery of minerals. The diligent Egyptian soldier-prospectors made discoveries through visual detection and manual effort, the approach which has given us the bulk of our mines to date. In the Rio Tinto District of Spain where Roman miners followed the Phoenician traders, we find the first evidence of discovery of hidden ore bodies in the absence of mineralized outcrops. This is how Joralemon 13 describes these Roman discoveries to the southwest of the Rio Tinto hills, under the flat plain of Seville:
