Ilmenite is the most important raw material for manufacture of titanium dioxide.' Industrially, several other products are made from ilmenite, the most important of which are: ferro titanium, ferro carbon-titanium, copper-titanium, titanium carbide and titanium nitride. The production of titanium metal is still in the laboratory stage because of the difficulty of extraction and as yet no important application for the metal has been found. Ilmenite has received considerable attention as an industrial raw material. Imports of ilmenite concentrates for the first nine months of 1941 were 156,737 short tons, the chief source being Travancore, India.2 Domestic produttion of ilmenite has heretofore been confined to Amherst and Nelson Counties, Virginia, where a complex rutile, ilmenite, and apatite ore is mined and treated to utilize all three of these minerals. A recent report3 has described development of the large titaniferous magnetite ore body at Tahawas, New York, where it is expected that 800 tons of ilmenite concentrates, containing 48 per cent TiO2 will be produced daily. Additional domestic production is expected from a large ilmenite deposit recently opened in caldwell county, North carolina. Flotation tests indicate that a high-grade concentrate containing 53 per cent TiO2 can be made from the North Carolina ore. Prospecting of domestic ores in other areas has been reported.' It appears that increased domestic production of ilmenite may well save considerable shipping space so vitally needed in these times. The composition and chemical structure of pure ilmenite is given by Dana as: FeO, TiO2; Ti, 31.6 per cent, Fe, 36.8 per cent, O2, 31.6 per cent. This composition is variable in that some iron or titanium may be replaced, giving a variable iron-titanium ratio. As an example, the iron-titanium weight ratio of ilmenite in Caldwell County, North Carolina, has been determined to be 0.94 (using 97.1 per cent ilmenite concentrate obtained by heavy liquids on minus Iso-mesh ore) compared with theoretical 1.16. No rutile was noted in this ore to account for the low value. This North Carolina ore is free of magnetite, which is a common associate of ilmenite ores. In view of a large potential production from North Carolina, the Tennessee Valley Authority conducted a study of methods of concentration of that ore, of which the results are reported herein. The Ore Five samples of Ore were taken from the deposit at various exposed locations and were mixed for the study and testing. An attempt was made to proportion the amount of weathered and unweathered portions in making the composite sample, so as to approximate actual operating conditions. An examination of representative specimens of the sample showed the following general facts: 1. The black mineral comprising nearly 70 per cent of the ore is ilmenite.

Terminal facilities were recently completed at Conneaut, Ohio, on Lake Erie, for the Bessemer and Erie Railroad Co. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corp.) which may become the blue- print for all future coal shipping terminals. Design and engineering of the new facility was by Soros Associates, New York, N. Y. Unlike terminals of conventional design, for example, those at Toledo and Newport News, which load coal directly from the railroad car to the vessel, the new installation passes the coal into temporary storage, loads the vessel from temporary storage and provides alternative reclaiming systems in case of major system failure.

In that paper he discusses the relationship between the percentages of fixed carbon in the coals, the gravities of the oils, and commercial gas possibilities. Mineral dressing research showed that iron concentrates of commercial quality could be produced from the Pea Ridge deposit near Sullivan, Mo. Magnetic separation and flotation, on a laboratory scale, yielded concentrates ranging from 60.0 to 71.4 pet Fe at recoveries of 89.9 to 97.6 pct. Early in 1957 St. Joseph Lead Co. announced discovery of three new centers of iron ore deposition in east central Missouri.' The discovery resulted from exploratory drilling in the vicinity of a magnetic anomaly or high. A deep hole, drilled into the Pre-Cambrian porphyry to determine the cause of anomaly, penetrated a magnetite-rich deposit.' The magnetic surveys that revealed the anomalies were begun by the Missouri Geological Survey in 1929 and were continued into the 1930's.3 At that time an area in Crawford County known as the Bourbon magnetic high was located. A second anomaly, similar in size and intensity, was discovered about six miles to the northeast in Franklin County in the vicinity of Sullivan. This area was not studied in detail until the early 1940's. To determine the cause of the anomalies, the USBM drilled four holes at the Bourbon site in 1943-1944.4 The most productive hole penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 127.5 ft. These zones contained magnetite in rhyo-lite porphyry at depths between 1600 and 2000 ft. Additional iron ore below 2000 ft was considered a possibility at the time. Some years later, the USGS, Missouri Geological Survey, St. Joseph Lead Co., and others cooperated in sponsoring an aeromagnetic survey of the Bourbon-Sullivan area which resulted in discovery of a third high, about eight miles distant at Pea Ridge. This deposit, with an estimated reserve of 50 to 100 million tons of iron ore, is considered the main find, although other orebodies in the same general area are of definite interest.' When this discovery was announced, St. Joseph Lead also revealed plans to exploit the deposit jointly with Bethlehem Steel Co. A new corporation, Meramec Mining Co., was established, and 1962 was set as the target date for completing physical plant.2 Annual production goals of 2 million tons of beneficiated and pelletized iron ore were proposed. Preparation of the site for shaft sinking was begun in June 1957. Orebody and Character of Samples: Drilling to date has established the Pea Ridge orebody as a crescent-shaped pipe about 300 ft wide. Some drillholes were bottomed at 2800 ft in very good iron ore.6 he orebody is predominantly magnetite, although hematite and a mixture of hematite and magnetite occur in the upper areas and peripheral walls. Drillhole cores representing ore from different areas and depths of mineralization were grouped into composites for testing. These composites consisted of: 1) medium grade mixed hematite and magnetite, 2) high grade mixed hematite and magnetite, and 3) high grade magnetite. The medium grade ore came from three holes with depths of i350 to 1900 ft. The high grade mixed hematite and magnetite cores came from the 1790 to 2812-ft interval of one hole. Partial chemical analyses of the three samples, given in Table 1, reveal that all are excessively high in phosphorus and sulfur, and sample 1 is

The tensile properties of steels at elevated temperatures have been studied by numerous investigatorsll primarily for the purpose of determining their suitability for structural uses. Tests with this objective have been confined largely to the temperature range of approximately 20" to 500' C., because of the rapidly decreasing tensile strength at the latter temperature. Tests have also been extended to higher temperatures2 for the purpose of determining the most suitable forging range. This temperature range is also of theoretical interest. The phenomenon if increased tensile strength and decreased ductility .in the so-called "blue-heat" range, approximately 200" to 300" C., is well known. It was suggested to the Bureau early in 1926 that a study of the properties of rail steels in this temperature range might prove of interest in relation to the studies of transverse-fissure failures in rails. There were available from another investigation3 several new rails from several different heats made to approximately the same specification requirements, the complete manufacturing histories of which were known. It was decided to determine, at least in the preliminary series of tests, only the ultimate tensile strength, elongation and reduction of area, because of the difficulty, time and cost involved in determining the proportional limit and yield point at elevated temperatures.

FOr the purpose of obtaining some first-hand data in regard to the shooting clown of coal in bituminous 'nines, it was the writer's good fortune to be employed as a shot-firer for almost one year. In all, 6,020 shots were fired by him during this period. All of the work was clone in what is known as the South Main section of the No. 2 Mine of the Ellsworth Collieries Co., Ellsworth, Pa., a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Steel Co. Position of Shot-firing in the Cycle of Operations The established practice of the Ellsworth Collieries Co. calls first for the undercutting of the coal by electric chain machines across the face of the entry or room. This is followed by replacing any posts removed by the machine-runners, or the setting of new posts or timber, as may be required. After this has been done the machine cuttings are loaded into cars. Then the coal is spragged, and a shot hole drilled to the depth of the undercut. Next in order, the shot-firer loads the hole and fires the charge. The working place is then cleaned up, timbered if necessary, the sides and face squared up, and loose material taken down. The face is again ready to be undercut.

Discussion of the paper of EDGAR L. NEWHOUSE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin: No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1801 to. 1806. G. C. RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. During the month of March, 1914, three lead furnaces in continous operation, each 136 in. long, averaged 249 tons per furnace clay, exclusive of coke and slag shells, which is smelting at the rate of 5.5 tons per square foot of tuyère area. This regiment, originally known as the First Engineer Reserve, will be remembered as the one recruited in New York City through the efforts of the Joint Military Committee of the National Engineering Societies. It was sent to England in August, 1917, and, after a few clays, forwarded to France and attached for immediate service to the British Expeditionary Force, without any opportunity for further field-training. This circumstance has led in some quarters to the impression that the regiment was one of engineers and mechanics merely, and had never been drilled under arms; whereas, in fact, it had received such instruction at Fort Totten for some time previous to its embarkation. It is true that in the famous affair of the German counter-attack after Byng's victory near Cambrai, the men of the Eleventh Engineers fought with pick-axes and tools, as well as with rifles borrowed from dead or wounded soldiers; but that was because they had left their own arms in camp, while doing the railroad-building work to which they had been detailed. The accomplishment of that work is really more remarkable than the behavior of the men under a German surprise-attack. It was before that counter-attack, and immediately after Byng's advance, that Field-Marshal Haig issued his despatch, announcing that the engineers deserved as much credit for that victory as the infantry, having performed miracles in keeping the railway transportation up to the fighting line. Indeed, the subsequent scrimmage, of which so much has been said, was ?Date possible only by the extraordinary position of the engineers at the very front, instead of in the rear, as might have been expected of them. A letter recently received from an officer of the regiment says: We have only recently been receiving the New York papers of early December, in which our regiment seems to have received much favorable mention. The stories were, in the main, true. Our men behaved themselves creditably, and certain of the officers received special mention for valor. Two of our 2d lieutenants were pro-moted to 1st lieutenant rank by special orders of General Pershing for "gallant con-duct in action," and about four others would have been decorated by the British,

The number of seismograph field crews employed in the active survey of potential oil territories is still on the increase, owing to the ever pending threat of a shortage in the supply of crude oil. It is to be expected that for years to come the seismograph will be responsible for discovering many new oil fields, both in wildcat territories and in deeper formations, and that the seismographic campaign will go on unabated. Yet improvements in instrumental design, in the field and interpretative techniques, are brought about year after year, and lead to the reshooting of areas many times surveyed previously. Notwithstanding the experience gained by the past eight years of active work in reflection seismographic surveys, the results given by this method of mapping deep formations have in many instances been at variance with the information subsequently obtained by the drill. To overcome this shortcoming, geophysicists have used closer spacing of the shot points and closer control of the depth points. The method discussed here is being used actively in the Mid-Continent region and endeavors to reduce the interpretation work to a mere mechanical technique, leaving as little as possible to the opinion of the interpreter. The New Method Field Technique.—In sectionized territory where country roads are available every mile, shot points are preferably located every 1/4 mile when six detectors are available or every % mile when eight detectors are at hand. The disposition of individual spreads is represented on Fig. I; in each case a shot point is located at the section corners. Fig. 2a represents the layout of a spread between shot points, the vibration detectors being preferably equidistantly located. Normally in the 1/4-mile control, the distance between shot points is 1320 ft. and the distance between detectors 220 ft. When shooting from shot point S.P. Lack of a system in scheduling the replacement of capital equipment can result in emergency purchases of units which may later be found unsuitable for the job. New York Trap Rock Corp., which produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, was faced with just such a situation some years ago. The company replaced capital equipment only when machinery in use was no longer serviceable, or when there was an obvious need for different equipment. Operating and maintenance costs were generally neglected because an efficient method was lacking. New York Trap Rock has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. Crushed stone output-6 million tons a year-is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Long Island areas by water transport. Customers are contractors with ready-mix concrete and asphalt plants located on the water.

THE problem of drying ores is one that most mill-engineers are sooner or later called upon to meet, and it may be timely to point out sortie of the difficulties resulting from such operations from purely a metallurgical and economic stand-point. We mean, in the following pages, to discuss primarily the effect of such operations on. the ore itself, without particular reference to the mechanical or cost features of the subject; That an appreciable tonnage of the ore fed to the usual form of drier, either rotary or stack, is lost, is fairly well appreciated, but we believe that only a few mill-managers know just. what their drier-losses amount to, and we have found that in most cases they console themselves with the fact that the drier-smoke is not very much discolored, and it is generally believed that the draft is not sufficient to carry away more than a. negligible percentage of the values. The drying of ores is becoming an important factor. since the more general application of magnetic, static, and dry-table treatment. Its importance in the field of metallurgical operations warrants a close examination into its effects. This subject has been repeatedly brought hone to us, and while the drier-losses, in every case examined, have considerably exceeded even the most generous estimate, an attempt at a recovery of these values is rarely made. We have found that the losses resulting from drying-operations can be effectively recovered, at a low cost, and believe that the publication of the results of a number of investigations along these lines will be of interest and benefit to the profession at large. It has long been accepted that blastfurnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirablc in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blastfurnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: . Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the pro duction of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blastfurnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: . Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the pro duction of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. Molybdenum was first discovered on the Continental Divide in Colorado in 19 11; and in 1918 two companies, one of which was the Climax Molybdenum 250 stpd operation, were producing. In 1919 both mines were shut down, but in 1924 the Climax mine reopened and has been producing ever since. Over the years mine production has been increased until today the mill capacity is 48,000 stpd (43,500 mtpd). From 1935 to 1973 all ore was mined underground by block caving with scraper slushing. Since 1973 ore production has been supplemented by open pit mining. As demand for molybdenum increased, upper levels of the mine became worked-out and new lower levels were opened. In late 1972 production began on the 600 level with the mined ore being primary and secondary crushed in the new No. 4 crushing station. Ore is hauled to the primary in 10 st (9. 1 mt) capacity Granby side-dump cars. The trains, carrying 200 st (181 mt), pass throug.h a dump block and discharge directly into a 54 in. by 84 in. Traylor TC gyratory crusher set at an 8 in. (203 mm) open side setting. Since the ore has already been broken to a size which will pass the finger raises in the mining areas, there are only rare oversize boulders to block the crusher opening. Selection of the crusher was based more on its capacity than its receiving opening, as is often the case with gyratories used in open pit operations. Nominal and maximum capacities for this unit are 1250 and 1800 stph (1 135 and 1635 mtph). The ore is often wet and sticky, so a mechanical car cleaning device is utilized. Under the crusher is a 300 st (270 mt) ore pocket equipped with a 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inclined conveyor which delivers the ore to a 2,000 st (1800 mt) surge bin. Near the head pulley of this conveyor is a wood picking station whe re tramp wood and steel are put into cars for removal. Two more apron feeders remove the primary crushed ore from the surge bin, and impact belts and conveyor belts transport the ore to the crushing station for screening ahead of two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard crushers. Secondary crushed ore is then conveyed to the surface for tertiary crushing. The entire underground crushing room containing the primary, two secondaries, screens and related equipment is serviced by a 100 st (90 mt) crane with a smaller capacity fast hook. A control room is situated so the operator can observe all the crushing operations. Rotoclone collectors remove dust from the entire operation (including the fumes from the zinc pots) and discharge it to the final product belt.
