In recent years considerable effort has been expended in the search for new ways of drilling into the earth's crust and for improvements of existing methods. A number of novel techniques have been explored such as explosive, flame, electric arc, abrasive jet, chemical, and various percussion-type dri1ls.l Some of the new methods are useful in isolated situations, but rotary drilling continues to be the most versatile and generally economical method for rock drilling. An understanding of rock failure during drilling can lead to improved rotary drilling techniques and to the development of new methods. Experiments 2-4 have shown that rock strength and ductility increase with increasing pressure; therefore, meaningful experimental investigations should be carried out under conditions similar to those encountered at the depths to which oil wells are drilled. The action of a roller-cone bit is not pure rolling in all cases but frequently involves gouging and scraping action. However, vertical penetration of a horizontal rock surface by a single punch has served as a first approximation of the rock/bit tooth interaction during drilling.5,6 In these experiments semi-infinite smooth rock surfaces are indented by steel tools with configurations having various degrees of dullness. Both static and dynamic tests have been investigated; however, static loading provides a good approximation of the loading rates occurring during rotary drilling. As a more realistic approximation to actual drilling conditions, chip generation must also be considered. Recently, studies have been made of indexing or chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater.7-9 The purpose of the present investigation is to study indexed penetrations in greater detail. An equation has been developed which will permit the direct determination of free settling velocity of any sized particle encountered in mineral benefici-ation. The equation is based on Newton's Law with the friction factor defined as a function of the laminar boundary layer. Development of the equation is described first from an empirical trial-and-error approach. Examples are given of actual settling data from the literature versus calculated data to prove the validity of the new equation. Newton's law of resistance of a fluid to flow around a sphere is expressed in Eq. 1. Free settling velocities can be determined by setting Eq. 1 equal to the gravitational force on a particle and solving for V. Experience has shown that when the solids are greater than 1 mm in diam, or when Reynold's number for the system is greater than 800-1000, the friction factor term, fD, essentially becomes a constant, and Eq. 2-b becomes Newton's equation for free-settling and is applicable under the conditions stated. Another special condition exists for particles smaller than 0.05 mm or when Reynold's number for the system is less than three. In this case fD=24/NRor24µ/pL,dV,. Eq. 2-b can then be rewritten as

This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the fundamental relationship between the net energy used and the respective product size throughout the entire range of sizes covered by crushing and grinding, and an attempt to find a sensible correlation between the existing theories. Walker, Lewis, McAdams, and Gilliland' have given the following differential equation of a general form for comminution: dE = -C§ [1] where E is the net energy required per unit weight in a certain process of comminution; x is the factor indicating the fineness of the product; n is the exponent indicating the order of the process, and C is a constant related with the material, units chosen, etc. H exponent n in the above equation is replaced by numerical figures 2, 1, and 1 1/2, the integrated form of the general equation leads to the well known fundamental theories represented by the law of von Rittinger,' law of Kick, and the third theory of comminution by Bond, respectively. The total net energies (E) from infinite feed size to a product of size x are as follows: The net energy required in a certain process of comminution is proportional to the new surface developed according to the law of von Rittinger, to the weight or size of the bodies treated according to the law of Kick, and to the length of the new cracks formed which initiate breakage according to the theory and explanation by Bond. On a logarithmic paper, where particle size is presented on the abscissa and energy consumption on the ordinate (see Fig. 21, all three relationships are represented by straight lines. The slope m of the line according to the law of von Rittinger is equal to -1.0; of Kick, 0; and of Bond, -0.5. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Rittinger has been presented, e.g., by Gross and zimmerley5 on quartz crushed in a drop weight crusher and evaluated for surface by the method of dissolution, by Dean on magnetite crushed by a similar method and evaluated for surface by the determination of coersive force, by piret7 and co-workers on a group of minerals crushed again by a similar method as well as by compression and evaluated for surface by permeability and gas adsorption methods, and by schellinger8 on a group of minerals ground in a calorimetric ball mill and evaluated for surface by gas adsorption. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Kick seems to be scant in the field of comminution. On the other hand, in the field of mechanical engineering Kick's law seems to be of fundamental nature in processes such as cutting, pressing, shaping, and rolling of metallic substances. Experimental evidence in favor of the third theory has been provided by Bond." To a large extent, data are based on the vast amount of grindability tests performed in the laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. In addition to the devoted proponents of one or the other of the basic theories listed above, certain investigators have indicated that one of the theories might be applied for a certain range of sizes, while another theory might be used for other sizes. An approximate but simple and practical solution to the discretized batch grinding equation has been obtained. The solution is based on a new grind function, a combination of selection and breakage parameters and particle-size distribution of the feed. The grind function, which is readily computed from limited experimental data, has significant implications for analysis of the particle-size reduction processes. Using the practical solution, three ball-mill comminution systems—dry dolomite, wet quartz, and limestone—have been simulated with acceptable precision. The application of the discretized batch-grinding equation1 to routine comminution analysis is frustrated by two principal difficulties. First, the selection and breakage parameters of the grinding equation must be computed separately. This is usually a difficult and uncertain task although, recently, a number of experimentally and computationally efficient strategies have been proposed for determination of these parameters?" Second, for actual computation, the solution to the batch-grinding equation becomes progressively tedious and unwieldly for finer particle-size range.1,2 The purpose of this part of the report is to present an approximate solution to the batch-grinding equation, which is practical in that it seems to overcome the aforementioned obstacles. The solution involves the concepts of a new grind function, a lumped parameter of the selection-breakage functions, and particle-size distribution of the feed, which is readily computed from a limited amount of experimental data.

THE death of Privy Councilor Bruno Kerl, on March 25, 1905, terminated a distinguished and useful career. Bruno Kerl was born March 24, 1824, at St. Andreasberg in the Harz, and entered in 1840 the mining school of Clausthal, where he studied for three years, working at the same time in the mines and stamp-mills. After an additional year of practice in the silver-reduction and iron-works of the Upper Harz, he passed his examination as a metallurgical graduate, and studied for a year at Göttingen under WV filer in chemistry, Hausmann in mineralogy, and eminent teachers in other branches. In 1846 he was employed at the Oker works, but very soon left this post, to become a tutor in chemistry, metallurgy, etc., at Clausthal, where he continued to labor until 1867. During this period the Clausthal school became a completely equipped Mining Academy, and Kerl was made in 1862 a full professor. Meanwhile, in addition to the work of instruction, he discharged, simultaneously or successively, the duties of many responsible official positions in the Royal Hanoverian administration of mines and smelting-works, and also published many valuable books and treatises. Among these were professional guide-books to the Upper and Lower Harz, and their characteristic metallurgical processes; a manual of qualitative and quantitative blow-pipe analysis; another of metallurgical assaying ; and, most important of all, a Handbook of Metallurgy in four volumes, the second edition of which was issued in Leipzig, 1861-1865. This book was speedily recognized as the leading authority in its field. In this country, the English translation and revision, by Crookes and Röhrig, published about 1869, had a large circulation. Ores containing uranium and vanadium minerals have been mined from the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation from many localities in the Colorado Plateau region since about 1900. The most productive deposits are in a relatively small area in Southwestern Colorado referred to as the Uravan mineral belt. The mineral belt is a narrow elongate area in which uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash have a closer spacing, larger size, and higher grade than those in adjoining areas. Pre- 1948 ore production from the mineral belt was 655,000 tons averaging 1.91 per cent V2O5 and 0.28 per cent U3O8. Production during the 1948 to 1964 period was 7,900,000 tons of ore averaging 1.46 per cent V2O5 and 0.27 per cent U3O8. The ore deposits occur principally in the uppermost sandstone unit of the Salt Wash. This unit consists of sandstone lenses formed by a system of aggrading braided streams flowing in an easterly direction generally normal to the mineral belt. These lenses, referred to as channels, are as much as one mile in width and average about 50 feet in thickness and can be traced for several miles along their courses. Areas favorable for one deposits are recognized principally by the following criteria: ( 1) a host sandstone thickness of over 30 feet, (2) the presence of carbonaceous material in the host sandstone, and ( 3) gray mudstones and clays associated with the ore-bearing sandstone. The ore minerals are believed to have been precipitated from laterally migrating solutions; there is no apparent genetic relationship between ore deposits and tectonic structural features. Exploratory and development drilling from the surface is conducted in three phases: first, wide-spaced drilling to find and outline favorable channels; second, moderate-spaced drilling in favorable ground to locate ore deposits; and third, close-spaced drilling to block-out ore. Long-hole drilling from underground stations is used to find and delineate extensions of ore bodies being mined. Due to intense production since 1948 from shallow deposits, best potential for new deposits exists in areas where the ore-bearing unit is 600 to 800 feet deep.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) MINE-DRAINAGE and the ever-increasing demand for water on the plains have within the past few years necessitated the driving of a great number of adits and tunnels, including many of considerable size and great length. In most instances, ex isting conditions have called for extreme rapidity of execution; and this necessity, coupled with the high altitudes at which most of the work has been carried on, excessive freight-rates, and difficulty -of access, has involved many complex and interesting problems. One of the most rapidly executed undertakings of this class is the Laramie tunnel, recently completed for the Laramie-Poudre Reservoirs & Irrigation Co. This tunnel is driven through Green ridge, a spur of the Continental Divide, which separates the Laramie river from the Cache-la-Poudre in Laramie county, Colo. Green ridge is extremely persistent, and further northward in Wyoming is known as Sherman hill, the highest point on the Union Pacific railway. At the point where the tunnel is driven, two opposing bends bring these streams within 2.5 miles of each other, with a difference in elevation of 500 ft. The rock exposed on the banks of the two rivers does not differ materially in hardness; and, without a geological study of the conditions involved, it would appear that the difference in the depth of erosion of the two streams is due principally to the greater volume of water at this point in the Cache-la-Poudre, which has a drainage-area above the tunnel-portal of 110 sq. miles, as against 30 sq. miles of natural drainage for the Laramie. To increase the water-supply at the tunnel, however, this latter amount has been augmented by two side collection-canals, which bring the available drainage-area up to 84 square miles. MnSi alloys containing from 2 to 24 at. pct Si have been investigated by metallographic and X-ray methods. Contrary to published data, the temperature of the ß-manganese to a-manganese transformation is lowered by the addition of silicon. The existence of two additional intermediate phases E and ( is demonstrated. E, ranging in composition from 12 to 15.5 at. pct Si, forms by a peritectoid reaction between ß manganese and the second new phase, (. The latter phase is homogeneous at silicon contents from 16.2 to 18 at. pct and forms peritectically from the 0 phase and liquid. The eutectic reaction occurs between the ( phase and MnsSi rather than the ß phase and Mn3Si. As a result of this investigation, a modification of the manganese-rich section of the MnSi equilihrium diagram is proposed. The binary diagram of Mn-Si, according to Hansen,' Fig. 1, exhibits in the low-silicon region (below 24 at. pct Si) a peritectic transformation at 900°C of 0 manganese + Mn3Si to a manganese as determined by R. Vogel and H. Bedarff2 as well as a thermal effect at 980°C between 16.2 and 22.6 at. pct Si reported by the same authors. The nature of the latter transformation was unknown. K. Amark, B. Boren, and A. westgren3 reported indications that possibly four more phases existed in the range of 10 to 27 at. pct Si. The present investigation deals with the phase relations in the range of 2.1 to 17.7 at. pct Si. A few spot checks were conducted up to 23.84 at. pct Si. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Small experimental heats were prepared by induction melting in a vacuum furnace using argon as a protective atmosphere. The crucible was of commercial-quality magnesia. The furnace charge consisted of silicon metal and dehydrogenated electrolytic manganese. The typical analysis for these materials is shown in Table I. The molten alloy was tapped into 2-in.-square, 7-in.-long ingots. GEOLOGICAL and exploration work of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company are handled by the mines geological and the exploration divisions of a geological department under the direction of the chief geologist. The mines division at present includes, in Utah. a geologist in charge, resident at Bingham, assisted by a geologist stationed at each operation, and a small group of geologists resident at the Bayard unit, in New Mexico. The duties of the mines division include the mapping and delineation of the geology of the mines, direction of sampling and diamond drilling, and the periodic calculation of ore reserves. At Bingham an amount of underground drilling within the limestone and porphyry formations which are hosts to the ore bodies supplements and completes development by mine workings. At Bayard, five to seven drills are kept busy underground, and eight to twelve drills operate on the surface. THE annual dinner-dance was held in the large ball room of the Commodore hotel Wednesday evening. A total of 577 were seated at the dinner, over which President Eavenson presided as chairman and toastmaster. In introducing George C. Stone, the James Douglas Medalist, W. R. Ingalls outlined the former's association with the zinc industry. He said, in part In designing and building Palmerton, Stone erected a metallurgical monument and won the title of chief engineer of the New Jersey Zinc Co., with transferal to its New York office in 1900. There lie held forth in dignity, efficiency, and with appreciation until his retirement from active service in 1929. After a few years lie was diverted from the position of chief engineer for his company to the superior one of chief metallurgist and that gave to Stone his next big chance.... This was the conception of a research department and the ability to persuade his directors to adopt it. I shall not pretend to summarize the great things that afterward developed. I shall mention only the institution of the manufacture of lithopone in this country, the charging of the Wetherill furnace with briquets, the mechanicalization of the Wetherills, the accomplishment of continuous distilling, and most recently the introduction of reflux-refining.

WHEN man became dissatisfied with the mere utilization of physical force and began to use weapons, he made a definite stride forward. At first he used sticks, animal bones and stones, often rudely shaped to some particularly lethal form. These devices, while crude, were moderately effective. How- ever, some of the brighter men of the tribe found that certain particularly heavy "stones" were somewhat ductile and could be hammered into more effective weapons than those previously known. Later, probably through the misuse of one of these weapons to stir the campfire, it was found that heating softened and perhaps actually melted the material. The process of annealing had been discovered! Smelting the more easily reducible metals was in all probability one of those fortuitous accidents which was followed up by thoughtful researchers who ultimately developed the technique of mixing various ores to produce bronze and even some of the nickel content alloys. The resulting products were at first lumps of more or less ductile material which could be hammered to shape, and were thus incidentally hardened by this process. The hardening of metals by alloying and cold working remained for many centuries the only known methods for improving their properties.

Introduction In August 1977, the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was signed into law. It stated that: "The Congress finds and declares that because of the diversity in terrain . . . and other physical conditions in areas subject to mining operations, the primary governmental responsibility for developing. authorizing, issuing, and enforcing regulations for surface mining and reclamation operations subject to the Act should rest with the States." Section 516 of Title V (Control of the Environmental Impacts of Surface Coal Mining) of the Act deals with the surface effects of underground coal mining operations. "Each permit issued under any approved State or Federal program pursuant to this Act and relating to underground coal mining shall require the operator to adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence. causing material damage, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner: Provided, that nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit the standard method of room and pillar mining." This section raises many questions. Precisely what is the "reasonably foreseeable" future as far as land use is concerned? And what is the "standard method of room and pillar mining"? The first part of the paragraph seems to rule out longwall mining, but isn't longwalling a "predictable" manner of "planned subsidence"? Does the Act take into account variations among mining methods in differing regions or coal seams? With these questions and the need to comply with the Act's provisions in mind, many states may turn to the Pennsylvania Bituminous Mine Subsidence Act of 1966- the only comprehensive subsidence act passed by any state-as a model for their own programs. Thus, it is very important to evaluate Pennsylvania's Act to see whether its basic assumptions can accommodate national application. This paper will note the Subsidence Act's provisions and guidelines, briefly analyze the current state-of-the-art in subsidence damage prevention and control, and list several recommendations for altering the Act's application guidelines for different mining areas.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE structure of iron and steel, though the object of so much study and research for the past 25 years, is by no means thoroughly understood. In the first place, we have three or more distinct iron-carbon thermal diagrams, each with its own supporters, and each representing a theory of the structure and constitution of cast-iron. In the second place, by reason of the fact that austenite, the solid solution of carbon in iron, decomposes in the solid state into ferrite, or pure iron, and cementite (Fe3C), and that quenching from above this transition-range, no matter how rapid, cannot entirely prevent the change and thus preserve the austenite by itself at ordinary temperatures, it happens that under the microscope we find, in addition to the ferrite, Fe3C, and austenite, which the thermal diagram of steel requires, it series of transition-products with distinctive structures, to which have ,been given the names martensite, troostite, sorbite, etc. Now these transition-products, in addition to the solid solution, austenite, have been the source of much controversy, at times very bitter. One side would insist that, say, troostite was an entity, which the other side would deny, pointing out that it must be a transition-mixture, with a particular structure. That austenite was a solid solution of carbon in iron has been denied by one school ; we have been told that Fe24C dissolved both Fe3C and Fe, and thus gave rise to a whole series of quenching-products-all this in spite of the fact that no matter how the thermal diagrams differ in regard to cast-iron, they all agree in regard to the solid solution, austenite, for Fe24C finds no place on the diagram. FOR the purpose of this discussion, let us consider that the Rocky Mountain region covers the area in the seven Mountain States, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and before we discuss the needs of these states, let us define Industrial Hygiene. Industrial Hygiene is that branch of preventive medicine concerned with the protection of health, improvement of efficiency, and prolongation of life of the industrial worker; in short, adult health conservation. It includes in its broad meaning not only the prevention of occupational diseases, such as silicosis, lead poisoning, cadmium poisoning, and many others, but such relative problems as overcrowding, fatigue, and personal and mental hygiene; exposure to abnormal temperatures, pressures, and humidities; ventilation, heating, and lighting. It is a science which requires the combined activity of medical personnel (doctors and nurses), engineers, and chemists to evaluate the exposures and determine the means of eliminating the hazard. The engineer surveys the workplace, takes air samples at the breathing level of the workman, and analyzes the work exposure. The chemist determines in his laboratory the exact amount of toxic material collected in the sample, which represents the exposure of the workman. The doctor must diagnose the occupational disease, recognize its cause, and evaluate the disability. Together, all three must correlate the data obtained and devise efficient methods, medical or engineering or process changes, for controlling or minimizing the dangerous condition and for studying the effectiveness of these measures. The plant doctor, in addition, must aid in the readjustment of the incapacitated worker and provide facilities for prevention. Industrial hygiene, however, is of no avail without the understanding co-operation of management.

THE founding of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1871 came at an unusually significant moment in the life of our country. The industrial revolution, in which mineral production played a major role, was just getting underway. The iron industry, established several decades earlier, was reaching sizable proportions. In 1871 pig-iron production was approaching 2 million tons, and the industry had spread as far west as Missouri and Wisconsin. The chief sources of iron ore were Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Michigan. The age of steel was in its infancy; production had not yet reached 100,000 tons per annum. The gold rush to California two decades earlier and the discovery of other gold and silver bonanzas in the West paved the way for the transcontinental railways, which were then being built and which contributed much to the subsequent development of the great copper, lead, and zinc districts of the Rocky Mountain area. Regular production of copper in the Michigan peninsula and of lead in Missouri and the upper Mississippi region had been established for many years but on a scale dwarfed by the quantities later required as technical progress, invention and enterprise made possible the rapid expansion of industry. The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroe1 and Richards,2 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,7 and Hayden8 to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions-and by Schulz,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867), reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's methods, may, arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

The Sacaton open pit copper mine has recently been placed into production. Some problems have been encountered in maintaining grade control due to differences between early block estimates and actual production grade. A study was made using three methods for computing grade for 50' x 50' x 40' size blocks from exploration and development drill holes; 1) The polygonal method, 2) The inverse distance squared method, and 3) The geostatistical kriging method. The results of each were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blast holes drilled in the ore over three benches of the new pit. Results indicate that the kriging technique gave better estimates for grade of individual blocks than did the other two methods for this particular deposit.

MORE improvements have probably been made in the diamond-drill field in the past decade than were accomplished in the entire prior period since diamond drilling was discovered in 1864 by a French engineer named Leschot. True, machines were improved, and new accessories were adopted from time to time up to 1929, but no radical changes were made. The basic principle instituted during the early years of the industry were still in use in 1929. At that time, practically the only diamonds used were "black diamonds" or "carbon." These came from Brazil through a rather round- about route, and by the time they got to the drilling trade their cost was excessive-$175 per carat and even higher at the peak. Perhaps because of this. or perhaps because of increased competition, the industry sought ways to reduce expenses even in the face of constantly increased labor costs due to higher wages and reduction in hours worked. The solution seemed to rest in two things-use of a cheaper cutting medium to replace the carbon diamond and the development of new machines to drill faster and thus produce more hole per shift of operation.
