IT may be taken for granted that a mine official knows his duties, as outlined by the bituminous mining laws of the State, he knows how coal should be mined and transported, and he has judgment on any possibly unsafe condition in his mine. Certainly, if he is weak on any of these points, there are definite ways in which he can acquire the needed knowledge. If with this knowledge the mine official has the necessary practical experience to bring self-confidence, he stands before the world as a man who knows his job. There is, however, another side to his work, one not found in hooks, a side even that may not be learned at the face even though one spends a lifetime there. The actual duties a mine official knows and performs are the tangible and definite things about his work. There are other things which may be termed intangible, because they are hard to pin down and see, and. which appear to be of equal importance in successfully handling a job and which in time determine the very success of the company itself.

INTRODUCTION The stratified deposits of the coal measures are strongly laminated and exhibit a high degree of anisotropy. The stronger rocks in the sequence possess joints and shear planes, the coal itself has a closely spaced cleat pattern, and the softer rocks are capable of flowage. To calculate the general distribution of stress in such a medium by analytical means based on the theories of elasticity is difficult, and has not yet been satisfactorily achieved. Nevertheless, some estimate is required to aid the design of supporting pillars and permit the correct siting of main roadways. This is important when laying out districts for longwall extraction, particularly if the results of previous experience are not available in the area to be exploited. Although elastic stress analyses, including finite element analysis, may not be very appropriate, the basic equilibrium conditions will apply. These, combined with logical deductions based on observed fact, can be used to give appropriate solutions which experience has shown to be capable of giving acceptable results in the design of pillars associated with longwall workings. Constancy of cover load is one of the fundamental equilibrium conditions. When mining below ground, the cover is not removed, therefore the average vertical load after mining must equal the initial cover load. If mining produces a local decrease in load in any particular area, it must be balanced by an equivalent increase in load nearby. Bending moments in the strata above are capable of compensating for the turning moments which this redistribution of load may produce, and the existence of a "rear abutment", much discussed between 1950 and 1960, is not an essential equilibrium requirement. If the distribution of vertical stress is plotted three-dimensionally, then the load on any small element of area 6S will be o.6S, where o is the average stress. This also represents the volume of the "stress envelope" which lies above 6s. By making the individual areas very small and summing together, it is possible to show that the total load on any particular area can be found by calculating the volume of the stress distribution envelope which lies above it. A similar consideration applies to the stress distribution in a two-dimensional situation. If the stress distribution curve is drawn, then the area below any portion will represent the load per unit depth of section. For example, Figure 1 represents the possible stress distribution across a caved waste and associated ribside. If AW is the load deficiency [ ] These loads must balance, therefore area AW = AS, and if one can be deduced, the other will then be known. Attempts have been made to measure stress distributions in the ribside and in the waste. Stress meters in soft rocks such as the coal measures have not proved very effective. Those based on the measurement of strain have experienced difficulty in strata capable of flowage, high modulus stress meters suffer from cross sensitivity, and overcoming to obtain absolute stress is almost impossible. Load measuring instruments left in the waste have also proved largely ineffective, mainly as a result of the difficulties of protecting the leads in a caving environment. Certain logical deductions, however, can be made about the conditions in the waste. CONDITIONS IN THE WASTE Over the area of the waste the surface trough which develops is remarkably consistent, despite the geological variations which occur from coalfield to coalfield. In Britain, an accuracy of 210% is claimed for subsidence prediction based on width of extraction and depth of cover (National Coal Board, 1975). The subsidence in the USA is more variable (Adamek and Jeran, 1981), particularly with respect to the point of inflexion, but the same general pattern occurs. At the shallower depths the somewhat harder roof strata involved in the caving in the USA may suffer less compaction, giving reduced values of subsidence. BASIC open-hearth slags have no obviously unique features when compared with slags from other metallurgical operations. Open-hearth slags form and exist at temperatures ranging from 2500 to 3100 F (1370 to 1700 C). In the course of an open-hearth heat, the liquid slag changes slowly and continuously in chemical analysis-the changes reflecting changes in temperature, changes in metal analysis, solution of charged materials, solution of feed additions, and solution of refractories. Through- out the process, the slag performs specific primary functions that are responsible for a large measure of the technical and economic importance of basic open-hearth steelmaking. It is intended in this chapter to present the chemical reactions by which the primary functions of basic open-hearth slags are carried out, to describe the physical and chemical principles governing the extent to which these reactions proceed and can be regulated, and finally to indicate the limitations imposed on other features of the process by the fulfillment of the primary functions. Basic open-hearth slags perform three primary functions. First and foremost, the slag provides a means of removing phosphorus from the liquid metal. The ability to remove phosphorus is largely responsible for the widespread use of the basic open- hearth process. Second, the slag serves as a controlling factor in transferring the oxygen required for the other oxidizing reactions. Third, the slag provides a means of eliminating some sulfur from the open-hearth bath. While the extent of sulfur removal is not comparable to that of phosphorus, the ability to remove some sulfur contributes much to the value of the process. The effectiveness with which the slag fulfills its functions varies with temperature and composition. Since operating temperatures are fixed largely by the specified nature of the product and the equipment, the speed and extent to which the functions of the slag are carried out depend largely on its composition. In the USSR, the Moscow Institute of Radio Electronics tronics and Mining Electro-Mechanics (MIRGEM) has started what it hopes will become a nationwide movement to educate mining students in the precise specialties that industry has come to require. Courses for mining engineers, the MIRGEM faculty proposes, should dovetail as exactly as possible with specific jobs available in the mining profession. Acting upon this thesis, MIRGEM revised its own curriculum in 1962 and has since presented an over-all plan for Soviet mining education before two mining school conferences as well as the Ministry of Higher Education and a number of major Soviet industrial ministries. The plan was universally approved with some suggested revisions. SOVIET MINING EDUCATION TODAY At present, mining education in the Soviet Union covers the exploitation of solid minerals and raw materials, including coal as well as ferrous and nonferrous metals. The extraction, storage, and refining of oil and gas is treated as a separate discipline. In all, there are 33 Soviet universities and institutes that train mining engineers for careers in the industrial, research and educational fields.

THE Bayard property of the united States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is in south central Grant County in southwestern New Mexico about fifteen miles east of Silver City and one mile west of Santa Rita. The present holdings cover a belt roughly one mile wide by ten miles long, lying west of, and adjacent to, the holdings of the American Smelting and Refining Co., Kennecott Copper Corp., Empire Zinc Co., and Peru Mining Co. The area extends from the village of Bayard on the south to a point three miles northeast of Fierro. The property is a part of the well-known Central mining district which has been New Mexico's leading copper-zinc producer for many years. The property is segregated into three sections, the Bullfrog, Hanover Bessemer, and the Shingle Canyon sections. Of these, the Bullfrog section covers the area between the towns of Bayard and Hanover and includes the Bullfrog No. 1, Bullfrog No. 2, Slate, Hobo,

RECENT advances in the fields of chemistry, biology, and metallurgy have confronted the analytical chemist with an entirely new set of problems. Development of plastics and synthetics has brought about a need, not only for adequate methods for their analysis but also for the various raw materials entering into their manufacture. The remarkable advance made in biochemical and agricultural research resulting from the use of isotopes as tracers or "tagged atoms" has established the necessity for the development of methods for the concentration of natural isotopes and for a means for their analysis. Similarly the advent of new and complex alloys calls for accurate analytical methods. Fortunately the analytical chemist has been able to meet some of these new demands by adapting to his purposes an instrument which has long been the most exclusive toy of the physicists. Solubility and the chemical properties of the atoms, which have always served as the basis for chemical analysis, do not enter into this new technique. Instead, momentum, defined as mass times velocity, is utilized as the means for the separation of atoms or mass groups.

THE important literature concerning zirconium in magnesium-base alloys is predominantly contained in patent references. Sauerwald, Eisenreich, and Holub1-4 discovered the profound grain-refining influence of small amounts of zirconium on cast magnesium and the attendant increases in strength, and ductility. They extended their work to reveal that limited amounts of certain other elements, including zinc, could be added for further improvement in strength and hardness. British. Patent 5111376 relates to the parent discoveries of Sauerwald, Eisen¬reich, and Holub. All of these references deal primarily with casting characteristics and properties in the cast state. Minor mention is made of desirable tensile strength, ductility, and toughness of wrought Mg-Zr alloys* modified by one or more additional elements. No extensive reference in the literature" has been found to the particular characteristics of wrought Mg-Zn-Zr alloys, with which the present paper is concerned. - The work to be discussed represents essentially an extrusion study of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloys and indicates that this system is highly interesting in the wrought state both academically and commercially. Accordingly, an important aim of this paper is to describe the hot-workability, tension and compression properties, metal¬lography, and toughness of these alloys. Compositional variations are limited to the ranges o to 7 per cent Zn and o to I per cent Zr. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloying and Casting Alloying ingredients were cell mag¬nesium, commercial zinc (intermediate grade), and a chloride salt containing approximately 50 per cent ZrCl2 and 50 per cent alkali chlorides. This salt is produced by Titanium Alloy Manu¬facturing Company. Melting, alloying, and pouring procedure essentially followed the crucible process as described by Nelson.6 The magnesium was melted using Dow No. 310 flux, and the temperature raised to 1350° to 1400°F for the alloying operations. After alloying of the zinc, the zirconium containing salt was added in small portions with vigorous stirring. This is an adaptation of the method described in British Patent 533264.7 The alloying efficiency of zir¬conium was approximately 30 per cent. During the alloying of zirconium, fluorspar was added in amount required as a flux¬inspissating agent. Next the melt was refined with Dow No. 310 flux and held quietly for 15 min. THERE is probably no other mineral industry of which the public has as much information and misinformation as it has of the coal industry. Unfortunately, however, the general public's knowledge of the coal industry, outside of the particular kind of coal it is accustomed to, by reason of use, is largely made up of information received from newspaper and popular magazine articles, in which the mine workers are depicted as overworked and mistreated men, and the coal operators as "coal barons." Those who have any specific knowledge of exact conditions in the coal industry know how unjust and un- fair such an opinion of the coal industry is, not only to the miner but to the operator as well. Many reporters and writers of magazine articles are misled by statements regarding the condition of the miners that are exaggerated and not founded on facts and, if an investigation of the conditions of the miner's work, his habitation and surroundings were fairly made, it would at least compel more truthful statements by those who write for public reading. That such an investigation would not reveal anything that was wrong, or anything to be censured or cured, no one, I think, would maintain, but I do think that any fair investigation of the facts would show that conditions in and around the newer and later-developed coal mines and communities would compare favorably with those of manufacturing districts, and that where the mines and com- munities are old and not very attractive places to work, or live in, they carry with them other considerations, compensating for these conditions, and cannot be remedied by reason of a lack of sufficient coal to warrant economically any costly changes.

ORE tests are made for the purpose of determining the correct methods of treatment for any particular ore. They should be conducted so as to insure that the results obtained in actual mill practice, on ore of similar grade and physical nature, will duplicate the results obtained in the test work. As the expenditure of many thousand of dollars may be involved in the building of the necessary mill, the testing of ores calls for extreme care and skill in handling laboratory machines, and a knowledge of actual practice to guard against the danger of obtaining results in test work that would be impractical to duplicate on a commercial scale. The importance of a correct sample of the ore is at once apparent. No matter with what degree of care the test 4rk is done, it loses its value when made on an unrepresentative sample. It is the first safeguard against future disappointments in the loss of capital and time. A number of failures in the past have been traced directly to faulty or lax methods in obtaining the ore sample.

The metallic elements, beryllium, calcium, cerium, lithium, manganese, titanium, vanadium and zirconium are used in metallurgical practice in relatively small percentages for the purpose of improving the physical properties of various alloys. No important uses for any of these elements have thus far been developed either in the pure form or in alloys of which they constitute the major constituent.

DENSE-MEDIA processes utilize the familiar laboratory float-and¬-sink procedure on a commercial scale. Just as wood chips float on water and sand sinks, so coal floats and refuse sinks when placed in a medium intermediate in specific gravity between the coal and refuse. Liquids intermediate in specific gravity between coal and refuse used in commercial plants are of four types: (1) Organic liquids of high specific gravity-halogenated hydrocarbons; (2) dissolved salts in water; (3) pseudo liquids obtained by suspending solids, such as sand, in water, and (4) fluidizing a mass of sand or other solids by air currents. Those most widely used for cleaning coal are solutions of calcium chloride in water and a suspended-sand pseudo liquid. Laboratory float-and-sink testing is an intermittent operation during which every opportunity is given for particles lighter than the medium to float and particles heavier to sink. Commercial processes are con¬tinuous, vertical and horizontal currents of the separating medium occur as either part of the process or unavoidedly produced by the intro¬duction of feed and withdrawal of products, so that the exact separation of the laboratory technique is not duplicated by commercial processes. However, separations close to the theoretical are obtained in commercial machines by careful technical control of the process. Most machines in commercial installations are crowded to get as much out of the equipment as possible, so that careful technical control is necessary to get the recoveries and grade of product desired. Sizes usually cleaned are plus %6-in. or plus 3-in. in the United States and plus 36-in. in Great Britain. Coal as small as 1 mm. has been cleaned in some experimental installations. The separation of coal from refuse in sizes finer than about % in. is made difficult by viscosity effects and hence at the present time cleaning is confined to the coarser . sizes. WAR demand- motivated developments in the zinc industry during 1942. Stocks of Prime Western were built up and High-Grade remained tight. The Prince The Prime Western stocks are expected to be cut down and the demand for High-Grade more easily filled as the Depue reflux plant of the New Jersery Zinc Co. increases - production. Subistition of steel for brass in artillery shell cases will have a considerable effect on the zinc situation of the country one estimate of the saving in zinc in 1943 by this substitution being a little under 100,000 ton, of metal. The metal saved will, of course be High-Grade. If the substitution occurs, the present tight situation in High-Grade may be entirely relieved as new production comes on the market and zinc may find itself approaching a situation as comfortable as that of lead provided the supply of zinc-hearing raw materials is sufficient to keep all reduction plants tip to capacity production. The premium price of the per pound of zinc over set quotas which went into effect early in 1942, helped to bring about the new lead-slag-fuming plant and other new sources of raw materials.

On Aug. 10, 1884, the Retsof Mining Co. began the sinking of an 18 by 12-ft. shaft at Retsof, N. Y. Rock salt was reached in 1885, in September, at 1008 ft. below the surface. The first salt was shipped in the fall of 1885. A timber breaker was built in 1886. In July, 1895, there was a consolidation of the Retsof Mining Co., the Greigsville Salt & Mining Co., the Livonia Salt Co., and the Lehigh Salt & Mining Co. These consolidated salt companies are now known as the Retsof Mining Co., a subsidiary of the International Salt Go. Eventually all of the mines were closed except the mine of the Retsof Mining Co., at Retsof, Livingston County, New York. On July 6, 1921, about 1/2 mile south of the original shaft arid plant of the Retsof Mining Co., a new 9 by 28-ft. concrete-liried shaft was started. The shaft is 1063 ft. deep from the top of the shaft collar to the bottom of the salt bed. At the same time a reinforced-concrete breaker and other buildings were erccted. This new plant began operations on Dee. 15, 1923. It was designed for a capacity of 3000 tons in 8 hours. Geology The workable rock-salt bed is 1063 ft. below the surface and 326 ft. below sea level, and varies in thickness from 9 to 10 ft. The total thickness is greater than that but is contaminated with shale above and below the pure mineral. The characteristics of the formation are shown in Tables 1 and 2. The bed dips uniformly 0.87 per cent to the south. Prospecting As the salt deposil in New York State is known, very little prospecting has been necessary. Before the sinking of the Retsof No. 1 shaft, a well was drilled to prove the existence of salt. No. 1 shaft was sunk where the well was located. The several salt wells drilled in Livingston Courlty proved generally the existence of salt throughout the county. (See U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 669: Salt Resources of the U. S.)

Broadly speaking, the year 1934, one of the most active in the history of the Coast, has been both disappointing and revealing. Of the 18 new oil-producing areas, only two have shown the qualities of a first class oil field. Many of the new areas are discouraging for the horizons exploited, because of close association of gas and salt water, and the absence of any appreciable oil zone. In spite of amply fulfilling the expectations of drilling and geophysical development, the year has fallen far short of the results that normally should be expected from such a campaign. In 1934, the Cockfield zone has been disappointing because its exploration down the dip from the Conroe and Tom Ball fields revealed only such distillate fields as Splendora, Eureka, and the great gas-sand thickness at Katy. The zone proved good at Raccoon Bend. Newer Oligocene and Frio fields in Texas, with the exception of Hastings, were also disappointing, as Van Vleck arid Old Ocean attest. The discovery at Dickinson is not startling. The development of Hastings, Tom Ball, Dickinson and the deep zone at Raccoon Bend will be slow. A new strip of prospective territory of minor importance lying inland from the Conroe trend was opened by the Kittrell discovery. During the year 206 unproductive wildcats were drilled on the Texas Coast, compared with 207 during 1933 and 141 during 1932. During 1934, there were 835 oil and gas wells and 229 dry holes drilled in proved fields, in contrast with 1100 in 1933 and 512 in 1932. The past year's production was actually 60,868,260 bbl., or 2,020,764 bbl. less than in 1933. The present annual rate of Texas Gulf Coast production is about 61 million barrels per year. The daily Texas Coast production decreased 5537 bbl., or 3.2 per cent, during the year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 173,598 bbl. Eighteen wildcats opened up new oil and gas pools during 1934, so that there are now 78 active pools and 3753 producing oil wells. The production of the average well is 45 bbl. per day. SOME of the reactions and procedures upon which modern techniques in the production of metal powders are based were used for 2000 years by the ancients to reduce iron and other metals from their ores. Despite this, however, the art of powder metallurgy is relatively new and probably stems from the introduction of incandescent electric lamp filaments. Attempts to improve upon Edison's carbon filaments led to the production, in order. of metallic filaments of osmium. tantalum.. and finally of tungsten, which ha, replaced the others and is the commercial product of today. These metallic filaments were originally manufactured by the extrusion and sintering of a mixture of the metal or its oxide with a reducing agent which also served as a binder. A comparative study has been made of the ex-tractability of several of the transitim metals from thiocyanate sohtions using methyl isobutyl ketone as the organic solvent. Extractions were made of scandium (III), chromium (III), manganese (II), iron (III), and cobalt (II), of which only the scandium , iron, and cobalt were readily extracted. All extractions were made at pH 2 and at 25.5 °C. A series of extraction experiments was made on scandium, iron, and cobalt to determine the effect of thiocyanate cmcentration added as the ammonium and also as the calcium salt. Also determined was the effect of metal ion concentratim and ionic strength on the distribution ratio. Analyses of the organic extracts indicated the scandium and iron were extracted principally in the uncharged trithiocyanate form, while the extractable form of the cobalt contained the cobaltotetrathiocyanate anion. THE chemical separation of metal complexes in solution by solvent extraction has in recent years been developed for large scale separation as well as bench scale work in the laboratory. It has also found increased application in analytical chemistry. Its extension to extractive metallurgy as a unit operation is best illustrated in the recovery of uranium and vanadium from their leached liquor.5-8 The extractability of some thiocyanate systems have been extensively investigated. The rate earths have been separated from one another using butanol as a olvent. Scandium was effectively extracted in ethyl ether using ammonium thiocyanate as the com-plexing agent.'' Similarly, the separation of hafnium from zirconium has been reported using ether""' or hexone13 as the organic solvent. The extractability of various metal thiocyanates in ethyl ether is given by 0ck.l Sharp and Wilkinson15 prepared nickel-free cobalt slats by thiocyanate extraction. The mechanism of extraction of titanium (IV) thiocyanate with methyl isobutyl ketone was determined by elafosse.''" The characterization of cobalt (TI) thiocyanate complex using methyl isobutyl ketone as the solvent at near neutral aqueous solution and the spectrometric studies of the ex-tractable cobalt complex has been made by Hard." It is noteworthy to mention at this point that the fundamental characteristic of ketone (oxonium) solvent extraction is that the extractable species are uncharged ion pairs solvated by the ketone molecules, but probably still partially hydrated.

TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS in Class G-Petroleum Division are distributed in PETRO-LEUM TECHNOLOGY, which was issued quarterly in 1940 but will be issued every other month in 1941. TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS in Classes F-Coal Division, J-Mineral Industry Education Division, K-Mining Administration, and L-Geophysical Methods of Exploration are issued as separate pamphlets. An Institute member is entitled to one copy of any TECHNICAL PUBLICATION or CONTRIBUTION. Copies of TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS listed have been mailed to members of the Institute accord-ing to their registration by classes. CONTRIBUTIONS and other TECHNICAL PUBLICA-TIONS will be sent upon request. A member may purchase an additional copy of a TECHNICAL PUBLICATION or a CONTRIBUTION at one cent a page; minimum charge, 25¢. Nonmembers may purchase any CONTRIBUTION or a TECHNICAL PUBLICATION of the F, J, K, or L classes at the same rate, but the nonmember price per copy for METALS TECHNOLOGY, MINING TECHNOLOGY or PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY is $1.25 domestic, $1.35 foreign countries. TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS (separate pamphlet form), $2 per annum domestic, $2.50 foreign.
