PREVIOUS investigations have shown that lithium is body-centered cubic from near its melting point to the temperature of liquid air1,2,3 Nevertheless there was an incentive to search again for a transformation at low temperatures: C. Zener4,5 has remarked that the low value of the elastic modulus (11 - C12)/2 of body-centered cubic metals and alloys implies a rapid increase in free energy with decreasing temperature, which would favor the occurrence of a transformation; also the shear movement to which this modulus applies is one that can transform a body-centered cubic structure into a slightly distorted face-centered cubic structure. It was confirmed that lithium does not transform spontaneously at liquid nitrogen temperature, but it was found that a transformation can be induced at this temperature by cold working the metal,6 and at slightly lower temperatures a different transformation occurs spontaneously. Transformations were also found in solid solutions of magnesium in lithium. THE NATURE OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS Before presenting a detailed treatment of the technique used and the specific data obtained, it would be well to give a brief survey of the general characteristics of the transformations. A new crystal structure begins to form spontaneously in a specimen when it is cooled below a critical temperature. In lithium the structure appears to be close-packed hexagonal; in the Li-Mg alloys most of the diffraction lines (but not all) are near those for hexagonal lithium. The transformation proceeds as the temperature is lowered and soon stops if the temperature is held constant or raised. The course of the transformation on cooling is indicated by the curve at the lower left of Fig I. This curve is drawn in stepped fashion because the transformation goes by discrete steps with audible clicks. Because of the similarity to the decomposition of austenite into martensite in steels, it seems appropriate to designate the beginning of the spontaneous transformation on cooling as the Ms point. On heating to room temperature after the low temperature treatment only the usual BCC structure is found. On heating, the low temperature modification begins to disappear at a temperature which will be designated as Ac. The transformation on heating is halted when the rise in temperature is halted. The temperature must be raised 40 to 50°C above Ac before the reversion is complete-an interval which is sensitive to the rate of heating and to the time of holding at temperatures above Ac. This behavior on heating thus has similarities also to the formation of martensite in the cooling of steels.

The mechanism of flotation of sphalerite with sulthydryl compounds of different acidities has been interpreted in terms of chemisorption of unionized collector molecules on hydroxylated zinc surface sites. At a constant collector concentration of 1.5 x 10 -4 M, the upper pH limit of flotation has been found to be directly and closely related to the negative logarithm of the collector acidity constant, pKa The experimental results indicate that flotation is prevented when about 95% of the collector is ionized. At low pH, collector adsorption decreases because of the reduction in number of hydroxylated zinc surface sites. These two effects explain why sphalerite does not float with the more acidic sulfhydryl compounds. Typical anionic collectors for sulfide minerals are short chain xanthates or dithiophosphates which are nearly completely ionized in the generally alka- line flotation circuits.1,2 Flotation mechanisms have therefore been usually interpreted in terms of ionic collector adsorption and competition with ionic depressants of the same sign as the collector. A few attempts have been made, however, to consider adsorption of neutral collector molecules. Contact angle measurements obtained by Wark and cox3 have been interpreted by Cook and Nixon4 as representing adsorption of the free acid molecules on sulfide minerals such as pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. Cook and Nixon tried to show that the free acid concentration of the collector was substantially constant along the curves relating collector addition and minimum pH for bubble adherence. However, in a review of the subject,5 Sutherland presented new data on the flotation of pyrite with mercaptobenzothiazole which did not support the hypothesis of constant concentration of either collector ions or collector free molecules. He further showed that, with the assumption of constant occupation of surface sites, both theories lead to relations between pH and collector addition having similar mathematical expressions. The historical development of the concept of contact angle hysteresis is reviewed. The measurements of contact angles reported in literature have all been made under static conditions. For the measurement of dynamic advancing and receding contact angles, four methods are described together with an evaluation of their precision. Three of these methods were adapted from devices already used for the measurement of static contact angles. The fourth method uses a new principle and apparatus and is the most accurate. While the relationship between surface tensions and the contact angle was extablished as early as 1805 by T. Young,' it was only in 1890 that the existence of contact angle hysteresis was reported by Lord Rayleigh. His observations, however, remained almost unnoticed. With the invention of froth flotation, the contact angle and its behavior became the subject of investigation. In 1907, L. Sulman and collaborators investigated the cause of discrepancies between recorded values of contact angles. They found that certain variations existed in most cases, but that definite maximum and minimum values of contact angles are obtainable. The difference between the maximum and the minimum contact angle in a given system was termed "hysteresis" by Sulman. First attempts to explain hysteresis were made by E. Edser. Discussion of the paper of M. B. YUNG, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting; October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2451 to 2458. T. T. READ, New York, N. Y.-I might .point out that this paper of Mr. Yung's is on a field that is comparatively little known. It is not as well known as the Kochiu tin field, of Yunnan, which is probably the third . in tin output of the world. This field under discussion is considerably further west and the tin which is produced here is, according to Mr. Yung, of somewhat higher grade than the Yunnan tin, and is used by the refiners at Hong Kong to improve the grade of the Yunnan tin. Most of you know that the tin from the Yunnan is shipped to Hong Kong, where it is refined and shipped to Europe. Mr. Yung points out that the Fu Chuan deposits are entirely alluvial and not found in any veins. They .differ in that from the Kochiu deposits, which Leclere says are "nullement alluvionels; leur origéne filonienne est de plus evidentes." Granite is the country rock here; doubtless the tin occurred in veins in the granite, and the deposits have resulted from the disintegration of the granite. This is a country of strong erosive agencies. The country is semi-tropical, and the rainfall is heavy, so that one would naturally expect deep surface erosion of this kind.

The experimental work which has been carried on with a 25-ton plant is completed, and the company is building at present a leaching plant on a larger scale, the first unit consisting of a 150-ton roasting furnace and accessories for leaching the calcine.

Artificially consolidated sand models, representing one-quarter of a five-spot, have been developed and used to study factors aflecting misciblt. displacrmenr. Sweep efficiency at breakthrough, size of the mixing zone between two miscible liquids and per cent area contacted by drive after breakthrough were determined tor the high mobility ratios encountered in actual resvrvoirs. Quantitative relationships between the degree of viscous fingering and mobility ratio were obtained by measuring the length of the fluid interface. Scaled miscible-slug experiments, supported by field evidence reported in the literature, have shown that when the slug is followed by dry gas the process is less efficient than expected. In addition to low areal sweep efficiencies encountered for high mobility ratio displacements, the effectiveness of a miscible slug is greatly reduced. This is caused by an accelerated growth of the mixing zone between the driving and the displacing fluids. INTRODUCTION Considerable interest in miscible displacement as a secondary recovery process has been shown by the oil industry in recent years. In addition to extensive laboratory investigations, numerous field operations have been initiated so that 39 miscible displacement projects had been reported' in the United States by early 1959. By far the most popular approach in these projects is the use of an LPG slug followed by dry gas. Laboratory tests have indicated that with a small miscible slug, amounting to several per cent of the hydrocarbon pore volume, practically 100 per cent recovery of the oil in place can be achieved and that all of the slug material can be recovered by a subsequellt gas drive. However, these experiments were conducted on small-diameter long cores that can be considered as essentially uni-dimensional reservoirs that do not represent actual field conditions. It soon became apparent that the inherently adverse mobility ratios existing in the reservoir cannot be ignored in any miscible displacement field project. When a less viscous fiuid such as an LPG slug drives a more viscous reservoir oil, fingers develop that reduce the areal sweep efficiency. The slze of the miscible slug to be used is a subject of some controversy. It has been proposed that the size of siug needed be calculated by setting lengths of the mixing zone proportional to the square root of the distance traveled. This proposal is based on experimental evidence' and theoretical considerations"' in which fingering was not a factor. A prerequisite for successful application of the miscible displacement process to field operations is a better understanding of the following factors. L What is the effect of mobility ratio on the rate of deterioration of a miscible slug? 2. How large a slug should be used for given reservoir conditions? 3. What is the sweep efficiency? The purpose of this investigation was to provide some additional laboratory data that should help to answer these questions. More specifically, it was intended to study more quantitatively the effect of viscous fiinger-ing, mobility ratio and slug size on the efficiency of this relatively new secondary recovery process by means of experiments on thin, horizontal, porous medium models.

THERE have been many attempts to prove that platinum was known to the ancients, but since no traces of the metal have been found in the relics of early times, it must be concluded that it was not known to them. As far as records go, it was actually first discovered in the 16th century in a Spanish mine on the Pinto River in South America; from which source it received its name of Platina del Pinto (little silver from the Pinto). It was more or less of a rarity and was a subject of interest to a few chemists only, until the year 1822 when the metal was first discovered in Russia. In 1819 there were noticed in the washings of the gold sands of the southern part of the Ural Mountains, grains of a heavy white substance, but it was not until three years later that this substance was found to contain platinum. While at first the amounts of platinum brought from the Urals were meager, prospecting soon disclosed rich deposits extending over a considerable area, and nuggets from 10 to 20 lb. were by no means rare. This discovery assured to chemists an ample supply of platinum for their crucibles, etc. The ore is now found in various parts of the world but the richest deposits are still found in the Ural Mountains. The platinum of commerce is obtained entirely from alluvial deposits at depths varying from 6 to 40 ft. The sand and gravel of former river beds are subjected to a series of screenings and washings to effect the separation of the ore. Actually, probably all gold-bearing gravel beds of the world contain platinum, and it is more than likely that large quantities of platinum ore have been thrown away with the black sand washings from gold placer deposits. This is especially true of the alluvial deposits of the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Platinum ore is usually found in the form of rounded or flattened grains of "sand," and occasionally in irregular lumps of the size of peas. Large nuggets are very rare. The ore has a metallic luster and is distinguished by its steel gray color, but shows light gray streak when rubbed on a hard white surface; it has a high specific gravity, 16 to 19; is infusible in the hottest blast furnaces, and insoluble in any single acid. The first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lurmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgom Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite's experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. THE following is not offered as an extended paper on the subject of shaft sinking, but more as a description of the present practice of shaft sinking in the Butte district. The Anaconda company is sinking at present the following shafts: Badger State, Moose, Mountain Consolidated, Mountain View, Pennsyl-ania and Tropic. At the High Ore and Leonard mines the shafts are being deepened by sinking two compartments and will subsequently be enlarged to the full working size by raising alongside the compartments which are now being sunk. The following other companies are also sinking shafts: Butte-Alex Scott, Butte and Zenith City, Boston and Corbin, North Butte Mining Co. (at the Granite Mountain shaft), East Butte Co. (at the Pittsmont shaft), and the Rainbow Lode Development Co. Shaft Timbering. The shafts of the Butte district, generally speaking, are of three compartments arranged in a straight line, and the pump compartment is usually arranged for the use of an auxiliary hoisting cage, as well as for carrying pipe lines and electric wires. The Rainbow shaft is practically square, and of three compartments. The length of the shafts outside of timber will vary from 17 to 22 ft., and the width from 6 ft. 6 in. to 7 ft. Fir timber is used in all shaft work. This may be obtained from the Coast, when it is known as Coast fir, or from Idaho or Montana, when it is known as native fir. The native fir seems to be the tougher wood, but it is hard to obtain clear lumber in the lengths and sizes necessary for shaft work. Some of the shaft timber of the Anaconda company has been treated with creosote as a preservative, but this practice has not come into general use, as the ground of the camp is so heavy that the timbers usually crush before they rot. The size of timber most .used for shaft work is 12 by 12 in., while 10 by 12 in., 10 by 14 in. and 12 by 14 in. are used for some of the special pieces around the shaft. The new Leonard shaft is timbered with 14 by 14 in. wall plates throughout.

THE definition of precipitation-hardening is well understood and its principles have been subjected to study for some time. However, the variation of properties with double aging, combined with strain-hardening, gives promise of new and useful phenomena. Properly to understand these distinctions, definitions of these terms are necessary. Precipitation-hardening. This reaction usually depends upon an alloy having such a composition that it consists only, or in major part, of but one phase, a solid solution, at a high temperature, so that, upon slow cooling, this solution breaks down into two phases, the solid solution and a compound. By heating the alloy to the temperature for maximum solution of the compound, quenching, and reheating to a suitable lower temperature for critical dispersion precipitation of the compound, useful properties of the alloy may be developed to a maximum. Double Aging.-Dougle aging in part is similar to the process for precipitation-hardening, consisting of heating a precipitation-hardening alloy to the solution temperature, quenching, reheating to the suitable dispersion precipitation temperature, strain-hardening, and again reheat-ing to a suitable temperature to develop certain useful properties to a maximum. The strain-hardening may be induced by two methods: (1) a rate of cooling from the first reheat may suffice to strain the solid solution lattice of the alloy; or (2) the alloy may be cold-worked to a suitable degree between the two reheats.

Fires in mines are so serious in their consequences and of such frequent occurrence, that their causes and the means of extinguishing them are certainly questions of the greatest interest to a large part of the engineering profession. We have already, in this country, many mines which have been burning for years, and though our hard anthracite is so difficult to ignite that for a quarter of a century after it was first discovered it mas not known how to burn it except with the aid of an artificial blast, yet most of the fires which have occurred underground have been in anthracite mines, and in the coal itself. The injury which these fires have caused to properties in various parts of the anthracite regions, and the cost of extinguishing them, would amount to many millions of dollars, and they have also occasioned the loss of many valuable lives. It is not surprising, therefore, that the subject has already attracted much attention, and the exercise of great ingenuity; and the present communication is made less with the expectation of announcing anything new, than with the object of putting upon record the present state of our knowledge on this subject, or, in other words, of indicating how defective are the present means of combating underground conflagrations. Causes of Mine Fires.—Even upon the surface, fire is a terrible foe to contend with, and there is probably no other which inspires such thorough and well-founded alarm. With what feelings, then, must we look upon this destructive element, when its field is in the narrow galleries of a mine, where the poisonous products of combustion, spreading in every direction, protect, in the most effectual manner, the fire itself from the attacks of extinguishers, while, if the face of attack be ventilated so as to enable then] to approach the seat of the fire, the air current simply increases the extent and violence of the conflagration. Fires underground originate in as various ways as those on the surface, and it is scarcely necessary to say that, except in the rare cases where they are the result of design, they are invariably classed as " accidents," and most generally as " unavoidable accidents." The variation ox the M, temperature with nitrogen concentration has been determined experinzentally. The free-energy difference between martensite and the parent y Phase at the M, temperature,is computed for Fe-C and Fe-N alloys using recent solubility data fm the Fe-N system and new data for the variatim of the activity of the interstitial solute in the y phase with concentration. The "geometric model" is considered also, and the importance of Zener ordering is noted. It is shown that, although at any chosen concentration the M, temperature and the activity are significantly different in the two alloy systems, the free-energy duference is the same within the limits of experimental error, thus Providing further evidence of the very close similarity between the martensite transformations in Fe-C and Fe-N alloys. TO estimate the free-energy change accompanying the martensite transformation in binary interstitial alloys it is necessary to know the variation of the Ms temperature with interstitial solute concentration and some thermodynamic data. To date, only the Fe-C system has been discussed because this was the only system for which relevant experimental measurements had been made, but even in this case the data available are insufficient to permit the free-energy change to be calculated without the assumption of a thermodynamic model for the y and a solid solutions. The last comprehensive discussion of the topic was by Kaufman, Radcliffe, and Cohen in 1.960.' Since that time Ellis, Davidson, and Bodsworth2 have redeter mined the activity of carbon in y iron as a function of carbon content and Atkinson3 has measured the activity of nitrogen in Fe-N austenite. The M, temperature of Fe-N is reported in the present paper. Thus, it is now possible to assess the free-energy change accompanying the martensite transformation in Fe-N alloys on the same basis as that used to assess the change in Fe-C alloys. This comparison is of interest because it has been shown recently4 that the structure of the martensite formed in Fe-N alloys changes with nitrogen content in a manner exactly parallel to the changes in structure in the Fe-C series and that the strain associated with the distortion of the iron lattice in either the y or the a phase by a nitrogen atom is the same as that produced by a carbon atom. The work to be described tests whether or not this close similarity between the two systems extends to the thermodynamics of the martensitic transformations. THE Ms TEMPERATURES FOR Fe-N MARTENSITE Bose and Hawkes5 found the M, temperature of a eutectoid Fe-N alloy (2.35 wt pct N) to be 35°C. This single determination appears to be the only reported measurement of the M, temperature of an Fe-N alloy. In the present work a series of more than fifteen different specimens containing between 0 and 2.7 wt pct N were prepared by controlled nitriding of pure iron wire 0.010 in. diam. The iron was supplied by B.I.S.R.A. and was designated ACN2. The nitriding procedure, all aspects of which are critical, has been described in detail elsewhere.' Each specimen was quenched from the austenitizing temperature into brine at 20°C without removing the specimen from the ammonia-hydrogen atmosphere in which it was ni-trided. Alloys containing up to 0.7 wt pct N were fully martensitic. More concentrated alloys contained progressively more retained austenite. At 2.34 wt pct N the specimen was completely austenitic after quenching to 20°C. The M, temperature of specimens with M, temperature above 20°C (those containing less than 2.35 wt pct N) was determined by a thermal arrest technique. For the more concentrated alloys (2.35 to 2.70 wt pct N) the variation of electrical resistance with temperature down to -196°C was used. Unlike Fe-C alloys, Fe-N alloys cannot be reaus-tenitized in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere because excessive loss of nitrogen occurs, even in short times, at high temperatures. Consequently, the alloys were reaustenitized in the ammonia-hydrogen mixture corresponding to nitrogen equilibrium at the temperatures used. The specimens were quenched in a blast of cold hydrogen gas and the temperature, measured by a thermocouple welded to the 2.5-in.-long specimen, was recorded on a high-speed recorder. In the first experiments 0.002-in.-diam chromel-alumel wire thermocouples were used but it was found that these gave erroneous readings due to contamination by nitrogen pickup. Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh wires of 0.002 in. diam were found to be satisfactory. Further details of the experiments are available in the original thesis.7 The cooling rate was controlled between 400° and 4000°C per sec by adjusting the hydrogen pressure. At least three cooling curves were obtained for each composition. Each specimen was analyzed for nitrogen after quenching. To aid in the accurate location of the martensite arrest points a series of cooling curves of 0.010-in.-diam platinum wire were recorded and these, which did not contain an arrest, were used as comparison standards. Four specimens, each in the form of a 3-in. loop, were prepared from each of the four alloys containing more than 2.35 wt pct N. One specimen was used for nitrogen analysis, one for X-ray diffraction, and two for resistance measurements below 20°C. The latter specimens were quenched from 20°C into constant-temperature baths at selected lower temperatures.

The erosion of guns is a complex problem which can be solved only by a detailed study of all the factors involved. In the present paper it is proposed to submit the results of observations and experiments which have extended over several years. Certain facts have been established and preliminary reports have been published.' Conclusions have been reached since then which, it is believed, are worth presenting for the purpose of promoting discussion, and with the hope that ultimately the whole truth will be known. The particular phase of the problem which will be presented here is the hardening of the inner surface of the gun tube. It has been known for a long time that after firing a large caliber gun for some time, the surface of the metal becomes hard and brittle, cracks, and wears away.2 The character of this phenomenon may be learned by an examination of some results which are typical, obtained from a detailed study of a 12-in. gun. The gun was trepanned and rings representing various sections of the gun were cut out for examination. The first ring represented the metal at the muzzle end, and the other rings were removed at approximately 120, 240, 325 and 337 in., respectively, toward the breech end. The appearance of the surface of the metal in the different sections is shown in Fig. 1. The greatest amount of wear and maximum amount of hard surface layer was found in section marked E, which is nearest the powder chamber and at the beginning of the rifing; the maximum amount of cracking in D; the maximum amount of copper deposition in C. Section B showed heat cracks on both lands and grooves, and section A showed heat cracks on the driving edge of the lands only. There was much flow of metal in both sections E and D, and there was progressively less effect noticeable toward the muzzle end. The polished cross-section of these same pieces is shown in Fig. 2. The extent of the erosion is greatest nearest the powder chamber, and diminishes toward the muzzle end.

A study was made of the effect of small additions of metallic solutes on the thermodynamic activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450o to 650°C. The experimental measurements were made in a multielectrode galvanic cell using. a fused LiCl-KCl electrolyte. The activity of zinc in binary solution exhibited a strong positive deviation from Raoult's law and obeyed Henry 's law to at least 0.050 mole fraction. The ternary addition of lead, gallium, or indium increased the activity of zinc. Cadmium or tin additions slightly decreased the zinc activity. Copper, mercury, silver, or antimony caused moderate decreases, while gold strongly decreased the zinc activity. The results are expressed in terms of Wagner's interaction parameter ejZn and a second-order cross-interaction parameter. The interactions for copper, gold, silver, and antimony showed a linear dependence with reciprocal absolute temperature, while the other interactions were essentially independent of temperature over the experimental range. Since tin and antimony decreased the zinc activity, the hypothesis of a purely periodic variation with atomic number was rejected. A semiquantitative explanation was possible with a free-electron model when relative electronegativities were used to express changes in the electron/atom ratio caused by the solute addition. Random solution and quasi-chemical models correctly predicted the majority of the interactions for which binary data were available to apply them. A knowledge of the thermodynamic interactions in liquid (and solid) metallic solutions is of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the formulation of quantitative thermodynamic relations for metallurgical processes. The approaches to defining the interactions may be either phenomenological (i.e., "What mathematical function adequately describes observed behavior and permits extrapolation to new situations?") or theoretical, such as a specific model

It is difficult, therefore, to present an extended theoretical discussion of open-hearth operations without confusing the theory of the process with the application of the theory. This paper attempts to present some of the theory of the open-hearth process without mentioning theory at any point, simply giving some of the practical applications of results founded both on theory and practice and on experimental work both in small and large furnaces. It is hoped that an answer to a number of questions commonly asked by the open-hearth operator may be found in this paper. Discussion of the subject matter is taken up more or less in the order in which a heat ie worked, beginning with the oxidation of the scrap charged, sulfur absorption by the scrap, calcination of the limestone, and extending into the pig iron for the charge, the slags formed during the process, and some of the phenomena occurring in deoxidation of the steel and in its action in the molds. Oxidation of Scbap When scrap is charged into a furnace it immediately begins to oxidize, Oxidation is carried out by.three reactions: Fe + H20 + FeO + Hz (absorbs heat) (1) Fe + C02 + FeO + CO (absorbs heat) (2: Fe+ ½O2 + FeO (gives off heat) (3: The product of oxidation contains some Fe3O4, but FeO usually predominates on account of the iron present in close contact with the scale formed For a given type of scrap the amount of oxidation is controlled by thc fuel and by the excess air being carried in the furnace, the temperature 01 the furnace, and the length of time that the scrap is in contact with the furnace gases. In general, less oxidation occurs when the furnace is rur hot so that the scrap melts rapidly. (communication to the Secretary*).-I notice that Mr. Callow takes issue with me on certain points I have previously contributed to the Transactions, to which I would reply," follows: Regarding Inspiration: Mr. Callow's refinements of gravity methods made just prior to the advent of flotation in the Southwest were intended to be "down to the minute," and the gravity flow sheet for Inspiration ores which he brought out at that time as the result of his long campaign of experimentation was regarded by many as the last word in wet gravity work. It was not my intention to discredit this good work when I said "he threw small light on slime treatment." "Minus 200 mesh," however, is not-synonymous with "real slime." Repeated treatments by gravity methods will result in the separation of a very large percentage of the fine granular sulphides in sizes much finer than 200 mesh, and I gave him due credit for that. The unavoidable losses were made in the "real" slime which I mentioned in the paragraph which Mr. Callow refers to as my "statements on page 1871," and his refinements were not a solution to the real slime problem. Mr. Callow has called attention to the fact that his best results at. Inspiration in gravity work were obtained on Joe Bush ore and he presents a table, viz., Tests Nos. 68, 71, and 72; and asks us to consider and compare these results, made by his refined gravity methods, with the results obtained by 'flotation methods in the new mill "during the second half of 1915 and in August, 1916." Of course, the ore treated in the mill was what happened to come. It was not Joe Bush ore, and therefore comparisons of detail figures are of no value. In regard to Mr. Callow's statements under the caption "Callow Cells Adopted by Arizona Copper Company," I would say that those who have been sufficiently interested to read my paper and' his remarks will notice what amounts to contradictory statements on several points which I cannot allow to go unchallenged. I was on the ground constantly and got my information at first hand. The tables published were the official ones. Mr. Callow was not present during the period and has been laboring under that disadvantage.

The application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and undcr varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarinc geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions. Introduction The following paper is in no sense a contribution to knowledge; it is merely an attempt to indicate some of the benefits that may be expected from the use of aerial photographs in geologic mapping and to mention some inherent limitations. The writer has used aerial photographs in his own work for the past 13 years and has had ample opportunity to observe their use in the hands of others. From this experience certain conclusions have been drawn, which may be helpful to those using aerial photographs for the first time. It must he remembered that a photograph of the earth's surface can delineate only that which the eye can see; therefore the geologist should not expect more from an aerial photograph than he would be able to observe were he in the photographer's airplane looking at the area to be photographed. Theoretically, if the geologist had sufficient artistic ability, he could draw as good a geologic map from his position in the plane as he could from observation of the photograph. Practically this cannot be done because the airplane moves at a high rate of speed, which in itself prohibits detailed observation and, no matter how great the geologist's artistic ability, he could not reproduce the detail that can be recorded by a camera. An aerial photograph is a picture map of an area. The picture may be studied in the office until the geologist is thoroughly familiar with every minute detail of the surface of the ground he is about to geologize. Introduction Maximization of profit consistent with environmental protection is the principal goal of new applications development for any conventional or in situ mining technique. Efficient evaluation of all the parameters that contribute to mining costs and production hinges on proper design and evaluation of testing programs and data. The program discussed uses several field and laboratory procedures to estimate ore deposit characteristics and optimize lixiviant compositions. Ore characteristics and lixiviant compositions are then used in a long path leaching test (stream tube test). Stream tube test data are analyzed by mathematical models with computer assistance to predict such wellfield rate parameters as target metal production, lixiviant consumption, and restoration. When these predicted rates are combined with market values for target metals, capital expenditures, prices of lixiviant chemicals, and other economic variables (labor costs, power rates, and licensing fees), an assessment of the relative feasibility of various proposed mining plans is possible. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 illustrates this process. [ ] Field and Laboratory Procedures In general terms, the procedures followed in the evaluation of an in situ leaching application aim at accomplishing: •rapid leaching and maximum recovery of the target metal in a marketable form, •low consumption of lixiviant chemicals, •unquestionably satisfactory restoration of the mined aquifer, and •minimization of capital and operating costs for the above through development of an optimum mine plan. Keeping these goals in mind, the following minimum test program is generally recommended. Geology •Estimate of ore reserves and their variability. •Average disequilibrium value for uranium deposits. •Ore thickness, depth to ore, water level, degree of confinement, and consolidation. •Characterization of quality and quantity of other ore deposit constituents (e.g. sulfide minerals, ion exchange parameters). Hydrology •Single well pump and injectivity test. •Downhole vertical permeability test to compare flow rates of barren and mineralized formations. •Groundwater quality as it may affect licensing, hydro metallurgy, and restoration. Hydrometallurgy • Flask or autoclave tests for optimization of lixiviant parameters and determination of specific reaction rate constants. • Flask or autoclave tests for assessing amenability of lixiviant solutions with ore, consumption of lixiviant, stability of metal in solution contacting ore, and environmentally important species mobilized. • A long-path leach test for modeling the behavior of the lixiviant solution flowing through a long mineralized streamline (stream tube testing). •Metal recovery tests from lixiviant solutions (ion exchange, electrowinning, etc.). •Lixiviant regeneration tests. •Environmental restoration tests.
