THE annual meeting of the Arizona Section was held at the Pioneer Hotel in Tucson on Dec. 10, 1951. Registration and ticket sales for the social functions started at 8:00 am and lasted throughout most of the day. There were 489 registrations, consisting of 216 members, 64 students, and 209 guests. Chairman Harrison Schmitt opened the Mining Geology Div. meeting and a short business session was held at which Dr. Charles Anderson of Prescott, Ariz. was elected chairman and Seton Williams of Tucson was elected secretary for 1952. Dr. B. S. Butler was program chairman with R. B. Mulchay as co-chairman at the technical program. Eldred Wilson spoke on Oxidation and Water Levels at Some Arizona Mines. George Kiersch spoke about Economic and Engineering Significance of Ground Water Localization in Limestones - Big Bend Country, Texas. Harrison Schmitt gave The Definition and Use of Terms in Mining Geology. These talks were followed by discussions. E. N. Pennebaker, A. D. Wandke, and H. Schmitt gave informal talks on foreign trips made during 1951, the meeting was then adjourned.

Discovery of a deposit of magnetite ore estimated at 3 million tons and of quality sufficient to warrant mining has been located near Reading, Pa. by the Bethlehem Steel Corp. Last January; the company spent nearly $400,000 for about 1750 acres of farm land which had been valued at only about $50 per acre. It is expected that a pilot shaft 18 in. in diam will be sunk some time this spring. The ore body, delimited by diamond-drilling by Sprague Henwood, is said to measure roughly 2000 sq ft and 1000 ft thick, beginning 1500 ft below the earth's surface. In a continuing search for strategic minerals, the Atomic Energy Commission expects to put eight to ten diamond drilling rigs into the area 11 miles southwest of Blanding, San Juan Co., Utah early this year. The Commission's primary objective is the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation. Holes 140 ft deep are expected to be drilled, with solid bit drilling through overburden, mudstone, shale and sandstone overlying the area.

The reverse martensitic transfomzation (i.e., the conversion of martensite to austenite on heating) was investigated in Fe-Ni alloys containing 30.5 to 33.5 wt pct Ni. The reversed austenite was found to be sufficiently distorted to exhibit marked differences in mechanical properties and to undergo recovery and re crystallization on further heating. In particular, the yield strength of the reversed austenite was as much as 2.5 times higher than that of the virgin austenite: with five cycles of the direct and reverse martensitic transformation, the yield strength was 2.6 times higher. There was an accompanying decrease in strain-hardening capacity and in stable ductility or uniform elongation. The recrystallization was observed to follow sigmoidal kinetics, but was characterized by an abnormal1y large temperature dependence which was evidently due to carbon segregation at the migrating grain boundaries. Upon recrystallization, the strength Properties reverted to those of the virgin austenite, but the ductility did not fully recover until the annealing temperature was further raised to dissipate the carbon segregation at the grain boundaries. The transformation of reversed austenite to produce second-generation martensite resulted in an unusually imperfect structure, thereby leaditg to additional strengthening. Horlleuer, the martensitic phase was much less responsive in this respect than was the austenite. MOST martensitic transformations are capable of undergoing a reverse transformation back to the austenitic phase on heating.&apos; This reaction, like the direct transformation to martensite on cooling, is usually athermal. In analogy with the Ms andMf temperatures for the martensitic transformation (where M, > Mf), the reverse transformation is characterized by the As andAf temperatures (where As<Af). It is well-known that the finish (Af) of the martensite-to-austenite reaction on heating may occur at a temperature where austenite is not stable relative to other phases in the equilibrium diagram.&apos; Reverse martensitic transformations have been found to influence the properties of the parent austenitic phase in a number of ferrous alloys. The austenite thus produced after one or more reversals is significantly altered in strength, microstruc-ture, diffusivity, and annealing characteristics compared to well-annealed, virgin austenite. The first detailed observations of such phenomena were made by Wasserman3 on an Fe-30 wt pct alloy. He found that the reversed austenite (i.e., austenite formed by the reverse martensitic transformation) was much stronger than the original austenite, and the second-generation martensite (i.e., martensite produced from the reversed austenite) was somewhat stronger than the first-generation martensite. On heating the reversed austenite, recrystallization occurred in a manner similar to that of a cold-worked metal; the Laue spots sharpened and the strength decreased.4 In recent years, Russian workers have shown considerable interest in these reverse martensitic transformations. Most of such investigations5-10 have been concerned with the stabilization of reversed austenite relative to subsequent martensitic transformation, and because of its unusual nature, this phenomenon will be discussed in detail elsewhere." On the other hand, the annealing behavior of reversed austenite and the attendant variation in properties have received little attention beyond the experiments of Wasserman.3,4 Gridnev eta1.,8 in one of the few such studies. followed the hardness change of reversed austenite as a function of time at three annealing temperatures. The marked strengthening of austenite achieved by the reverse martensitic transformation has been referred to as "transformation strengthening" by Wasserman3,4 and as "phase hardening" by Malyshev et a1.7,9,10 to differentiate it from hardening produced by cold working. Both groups of investigators noted that further strengthening of the austenite could be attained by repeated or cyclic transformations, but the first cycle resulted in the most pronounced effect. Evidence of the altered microstructure of reversed austenite has been reported by Maximova and Nikonorova6 and by Edmonson and KO.12 The former found that reversed austenite was much more sensitive to etching than the original austenite, and the latter authors observed a (&apos;ghost" structure resembling martensite in certain areas of the reversed austenite. SILICOSIS is a term known to almost everyone today. Yet, in spite of a great deal of study, much is still to be learned regarding the disease. Government organizations are still continuing their investigations, begun near Joplin, Mo., 25 years ago. Work is also being done in several universities, as Harvard, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Toronto, and at least two private organizations, the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc., and the Saranac Laboratories for the Study of Tuberculosis, devote most of their time to this subject. Similar studies have been and are being made in many other countries.

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish, or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

IN making a comparison of mine inspection methods in Europe and the United States, it is necessary to have some basis to start from, which makes this subject rather difficult, as such methods are governed largely by the authority given the inspector by the mining laws. In the United States there are 31 coal producing states and territories and 32 different mining laws under which inspectors operate, as one state-Pennsylvania-has both a bituminous and an anthracite code. Some of these codes are distinctly coal mining codes; others are essentially coal mining but apply also to other mines; several codes are sub-divided referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines, and a few codes are mainly metal mining but apply in part to coal mining. Having all these different codes in the United States and the departments organized in a variety of different ways, there is of necessity a great difference in inspection methods in this country.

INTRODUCTION. THE installation of the Gayley Dry-Air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Co., for the. reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to. make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, on a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by ? messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. On the basis of our own experience, we argued that if the moisture could be kept low, and also uniform, the cost of installation would be more than justified. THOUGH the fall meeting of the Coal Division was held in the heart of the anthracite section, at Hazleton, Pa., the bituminous industry was well represented also, and the two groups found much common ground for discussion. The&apos; technical part of the program was confined to two sessions in the morning and afternoon of the first day, Friday, Oct. 14, the evening and the following day being reserved for field trips and social functions. The attendance more than met the expectations of those in charge of the arrangements; there seemed no hint of depression here.

The Ising model for the internal energy of a binary alloy has been used to obtain a general equation for the critical resolved shear stress of partially ordered crystals. The equation expresses the stress in terms of the Warren "alphas " and can be used to estimate the variation in strength with order without the assumption, present in the original formulation of this problem in terms of domain size, that order is complete within each domain and that the domains are of ungorm size and shape. In addition, it is the general equation, according to the Ising model, for strengthening by short-range order. Two applications of the equation are considered: One is an estimate of the variation in strength of CkAu with long-range order. The other is an estimate of the variation in strength of FeCo with quench temperature. Reasonable agreement is found with the variations reported in the literature. When the internal energy of an alloy crystal depends upon the distribution of solute, the strength of the crystal will also depend upon it because a portion of the applied stress for plastic deformation will be: where V is the volume of the crystal and E(E) is the energy change associated with the solute redistribution caused by the plastic strain, E. We expect T to equal zero for a crystal having a random arrangement of solute because the arrangement would remain random after plastic deformation. Likewise, we expect it to equal zero when the crystal is perfectly ordered because the motion of paired dislocations found in such crystals does not disrupt order. However, when short-range order exists or when long-range order is incomplete, plastic deformation will decrease the amount of order and additional work, proportional to the ordering energy, will be expended. Fisher&apos; estimated T for crystals having short-range order by assuming an interaction energy between neighboring atoms and estimating the change in the number of unlike neighbors as a dislocation moved through the crystal. (His analysis was limited and several workers2"6 have since given more complete ones.) Fisher minimized the importance of a strengthening mechanism of this type for paired dislocations in a structure having long-range order. ~ottrell,&apos; however, pointed out that T could be appreciable for ordered crystals having antiphase domains. He attributed the strengthening to the increase in surface energy of the domains as they were cut by paired dislocations. Ardley,&apos; in his test of Cottrell&apos;s theory, found that r for Cu3Au crystals obeyed the equation: for 1 > t where 1 is the domain size, t is the domain wall thickness, and y is the surface energy of an antiphase boundary. His experiments represent the classic confirmation of the strengthening mechanism proposed by Cottrell. However, the assumptions involved in using Cottrell&apos;s theory are valid only for large domain size in CU~AU,~"~ i.e., when Eq. [2] reduces to: For small domains, ~linn~ has questioned Ardley&apos;s assumption that order was complete, and, indeed, Stoloff and ~avies" fpnd it incomplete until a size of approximately lOOA was reached. Even when the order within a domain is complete, it is not obvious how one determines the appropriate value for I in a structure where domains vary in size and are irregularly shaped. The purpose of this paper is to estimate T without restrictions upon the degree of order and domain shape. Our major assumption will be the use of a generalization of the model proposed by Bethe" (the Ising model) for the internal energy. This will in fact allow us to combine the theories for strengthening by short-range order and by antiphase domains into a single, general formalism. We will use the results to estimate the variation in strength of Cu3Au crystals with long-range order8 and the variation in flow stress of FeCo crystals with quench temperature.12&apos;13 INTERNAL ENERGY For simplicity, we restrict our considerations to those binary solid solutions which can be described as an arrangement of atoms on a Bravais lattice. An atom site will be indexed by three numbers (PI, pz, p3) determined by the vector: from the origin fixed at atom (0, 0, 0) to the atom site where a&apos;, an, and a, are the lattice translation vectors. In view of the proposed visit of the Institute to Cuba this winter, the following brief sketch of the principal mineral deposits near Santiago de Cuba has been prepared largely from notes taken in February, 1903, during a visit to the mines then in operation in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Westward from Cape Maysi, the most eastern point of the island, the coast is rocky and uninviting. The usual course of the steamers is well in toward the shore, and the lines of stratification of the rocks can be distinguished clearly, the presence of iron or other ores being indicated by frequent blotches of mineral stain. One is impressed with the general rugged character of the southeastern coast-line,—an almost unbroken barrier of coral-limestone bluff&apos;s, full of caves and hollows, into which the surf rushes with a roar and bursts into tall fountains of spray. Beyond rises abruptly the Sierra Maestra range, whose sharp, peaked crest-line betrays its eruptive or igneous origin. From a height of about 800 ft. near Cape Maysi, this range gradually rises to the westward, attaining its maximum elevation of more than 8,300 ft. in the Pico Turquino, beyond Santiago. THE recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-mill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice was the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening oil the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp ; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as compared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete. It is the universal practice to use rolls where a relatively small tonnage is to be crushed coarse, as, for example, when coarse concentration is included in the plan of treatment. Power, attendance, repairs, and first-cost are smaller for the rolls, under such circumstances, than for stamps; and it is becoming daily more apparent that, with no concentration to provide for, the use of rolls and tube-mills, without the complication of trommels and elevators required by concentration, is rapidly gaining favor in the eyes of the leading designers. The next step was the use of the rapid-running Chilean mill between the gravity-stamps and the tube-mill, which again narrowed the field of operation of the gravity-stamp while radically widening its screen-aperture. Such a combination of stamps and Chilean mill offers advantages when fine concentration is necessary, since the reduction in the Chilean mill call be adjusted easily and governed by varying the screen-mesh. The data were collected by the representatives of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce in Japan and are furnished here through the courtesy of the Department. In connection with the proposed suspension of both new and old Government undertakings and the general depression in building, which is expected to result from the retrenchment policy of the Government, some cuts in iron and steel prices have been made by dealers. It is expected that the Yawata Steel Works may reduce its round bar prices for November delivery by 1 yen.

INTRODUCTION Freeport-McMoRan Inc. has been very active recently with two major discoveries and its restructuring activities. This paper describes Freeport-McMoRan&apos;s businesses, the two major mineral discoveries, and exciting opportunities within the oil and gas operations. BUSINESS ACTIVITIES Freeport-McMoRan is the largest and one of the lowest cost fully integrated U.S. phosphate fertilizer producers. It is the second largest domestic Frasch sulphur producer. Freeport- McMoRan will become the largest domestic producer of Frasch sulphur when its Main Pass Block 299 sulphur deposit reaches full production in 1993. Furthermore, it is the largest transporter of sulphur produced by others. Its oil and gas activities rank among the largest U.S. independents in terms of production and proved reserves. The copper/gold operations in Indonesia are among the world&apos;s lowest cost. When expansion operations reach full capacity levels in 1992, the Indonesian copper/gold complex will be the fifth largest copper operation in the world. Operations are divided into three business segments that include: 1. Agricultural minerals, incorporating sulphur, phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizer activities; 2. Energy, including oil and gas activities; and 3. Metals, incorporating copper, gold and silver operations in Indonesia. In early 1989, Freeport-McMoRan announced the discovery of two world-class ore bodies; a sulphur deposit off the coast of Louisiana on Main Pass Block 299, and a copper/gold deposit -- the Grasberg in Indonesia -- approximately two miles away from the existing Ertsberg East operations. As a result of these major discoveries, Freeport- McMoRan decided to carry out a restructuring program. Its purpose was to sell $1.2 to $1.5 billion of non-strategic assets. Debt levels and associated interest expenses will be significantly reduced, and general and administrative expenses will be reduced, which will place Freeport- McMoRan in an excellent position to fund the development of the Main Pass Block 299 sulphur discovery, the Grasberg discovery, and oil and gas discoveries. This restructuring program also will allow Freeport-McMoRan to achieve the greatest future value for shareholders by focusing on its principal businesses (Figure 1). Alexander Forsyth, Southport, Me. (communication to the Secretary): In Mr. Irving&apos;s able and interesting paper he describes minutely the appearance of the wolframite and its association with the refractory siliceous gold-ore. He also describes this gold-ore, but fails to mention the important pockets of metallic gold found in the Lead City occurrence of it. I use the term " metallic " in preference to the more usual " free," for it has been found that this gold is not easily amalgamated. Metallic gold is comparatively rare in the refractory siliceous gold-ores of the Black Hills; hence its occurrence in considerable amounts in the Lead City wolframite district deserves notice. I possess a beautiful specimen from the Harrison mine. It is a lump of drusy, granular ore, about 6 in. in diameter. The gold .is " shot" through it in large and small pin-heads; and in two specially oxidized areas, each about 11/2 in. in diameter, it is peppered full. The famous " Grantz strike," made in the Lead City wolframite locality, produced many beautiful gold specimens. This district affords an excellent example of the repeated discovery of new mineral values upon old ground. By reason of its proximity to the Homestake vein, this wolframite deposit was inevitably traversed many times by experienced geologists, mineralogists and mining engineers, who evidently must have thrown aside, with no thought of wolframite, the lumps of " black iron " lying about. I have the admission of an able geologist that, six months before the wolframite was discovered, he visited some of the very mines where it occurred, and passed it by as magnetic iron-ore. At the time of the discovery, the mineral was scattered over the gold-mine dumps in no small quantities, having been culled as worthless out of the gold-ore. It remained for

Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as near term and Potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers and blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.

A complete review of the use of chelating agents in the sepa ration of rare earths by ion-exchange is given as well as a concise description of the recent pilot-plant operations of the Ames Laboratory. The two chelating agents which show the greatest promise are ethylenediamine-N,N,N&apos;,N&apos;-tetraacetic acid and N&apos;-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediarnine-N,N,N &apos;-triacetic acid. The first successful separations of rare earths by ion exchange were reported in a collection of papers which appeared in the November, 1947, issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.1&apos;9 Some of this work was performed at the Ames Laboratory of the A.E.C., the remainder at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The processes developed at Oak Ridge, as well as some of the early Arnes methods, employed 5 pct citric acid-ammonium citrate eluant at low pH and were carried out on either H+-state or NH:-state resin beds. These techniques were successful for the separation of small quantities of either naturally occurring or radioactive rare earths and are still used for the isolation of rare-earth activities from fission products. Concentrated citrate is not economical, however, for use in moderate or large-scale rare-earth separations. For this reason, the Ames Laboratory turned its attention to lower concentrations and higher pH&apos;s in order to make more effective use of the eluting agent.10-14 Although elutions have been performed successfully over a wide range of conditions, 0.1 pct citrate at a pH of 8.0 is highly recommended for use on H+-state resin beds.15,16 Elu-tion with 0.1 pct citrate in the pH range from 5 to 9 brings about the separation of the constituent rare earths into a series of flat-topped elution bands which progress down the resin bed, head to tail, without actually pulling apart as do the rare-earth peaks which develop when trace quantities are eluted with 0.25M (5 pct) citrate at low pH&apos;s. Because of this, elution with 0.1 pct citrate at pH 8.0 do not produce pure rare earths unless sufficient quantities are present to provide developed bands which are at least several inches long on the columns. Although other eluting agents have proved more effective than citrate solutions, articles concerning the use of citric acid for separating rare earths still appear in the literature occasionally. For example, Ketelle and Boyd17 reported some further studies on the separation of rare earths with 5 pct citrate in 1951. They used 270 to 325 mesh Dowex-50 columns at 100°C and a pH of 3.28. vickery18 compared the effectiveness of a number of eluants for the separation of rare earths on NH+4 state Dowex-50 in 1952. He found that citric acid was more efficient than acetic, malic, tartaric, and aminoacetic acids. In 1953, Mayer and Freiling18 reported that citrate was inferior to malate, glycolate, lactate, and EDTA for the resolution of Sm-Eu and Y-Tb mixtures on 250 to 500 mesh, NH+4-state, Dowex-50 at 87°C. pinta20 used 5 pct citrate in the pH range 2.8 to 3.4 to obtain some rare earths for analytical work the same year. Trombe and Loriers21 reported the use of citric acid in their laboratory to separate rare earths in kilogram quantities. Lariers and Quesney22 reported some separations with citrate in 1954. They used 5 pct citrate at pH 2.8 to separate yttrium and the yttrium-group rare earths from the cerium-group rare earths. briers23 used 5 pct citrate at pH 3.2 and 90°C as late as 1956 to isolate thulium in fair purity. For the separation of tracer quantities of rare earths, Mayer and Freiling19 have recommended pH 5.00, 0.24M lactate at 87 °C on 250 to 500 mesh, NH+4-form Dowex-50. Freiling and Bunney24 have also employed lactic acid for the separation of fission-product rare earths. Cunninghame, Size-land, Willis, Eakins, and Mercer25 have reported a 4-hr separation of Y, Eu, Sm, Pm, Nd, and Pr with 1M lactic acid at pH 3.25 on Zeokarb-225 at 87°C. Stewart, et al.,26 reported separation factors for rare earths distributing between Dowex-50 and 0.25M glycolic acid. stewart27 also reported a 30-61 separation of Y, Tm, Er, Tb, and Lu tracers with buffered, 0.25M glycolic acid containing 0.05 pct Aerosol OT. The resin bed was 400-mesh Dowex-50 (X12). The pH of the ammonia-buffered eluant was 3.5. Various aminopolyacetic acids have also been used to obtain varying degrees of separation of the rare earths. SILVER reached a new high, with the ceiling the limit, at the annual Institute dinner at the Commodore on Washington&apos;s Birthday night. Carrying along as ballast other commodities, such as rolls, roses and ferns, souvenir boxes and table number placards, hundreds of silvery balloons, cut loose from their moorings at the tables, bounced idly against the plaster decorations high overhead. At the head table, Scott Turner, retiring President, pre- sided as toastmaster, with the new President, Frederick M. Becket, on his right, and the Chairman of the New York Section, Sydney H. Ball, on his left. Many other distinguished Institute members, medalists, and representatives of organizations and committees, ranged to the east and west. Each had the opportunity at least to rise and bow.
