ALTHOUGH several geological indicators of the critical type are known, including quartz inversions and decomposition of hydrous minerals such as serpentine, there are very few of the general type. Solid solutions are excepted, but the limitations of use are very restricted and interpretations are sometimes ambiguous. General methods for determining temperature and pressure conditions during the crystallization of minerals would have considerable scientific and economic value. It is not the purpose of this paper .to, discuss the various methods of geological thermometry and barometry, but to present one general method, applicable to all minerals, and to describe what progress has been made in the methods of measurement. The general method, in. brief, is a study of the stress conditions in and around various types of foreign inclusions which are trapped in minerals during growth. The method depends upon the fact that any homogeneous gas, liquid, or solid will in general have coefficients of thermal expansion and volume compressibility different from those of any given mineral. Therefore stress must develop in and around all types of inclusions in minerals if the temperature or the pressure, or both, are changed from the conditions which prevailed during the growth of the mineral. The methods of measurement consist of determinations of the temperature-pressure conditions of fit of the inclusions in the host mineral. The types of inclusions in minerals are: 1-gas, or liquid plus vapor, when observed at room temperature, due to crystallization under pneumatolytic conditions; 2-liquid, or liquid plus vapor when observed at room temperature, due to crystallization under hydrothermal conditions; 3-glassy solid, or devitrified glass, due to crystallization under magmatic or high temperature metamorphic conditions, in a siliceous liquid; and 4-crystals, due to overgrowth of other minerals crystallizing simultaneously or of other minerals which crystallized previously. A survey of the literature shows that much valuable earlier work on inclusions, especially that carried out in England in the last century, has dropped out of current knowledge. The following is a brief summary of the significant, contributions to the problem up to the present day. Davy in 1822 asserted that fluid inclusions in minerals consist of an aqueous solution of salts and a gas bubble, the whole being either at lower or higher pressure than atmospheric.1 At intervals from 1823 to 1862, Brewster contributed information concerning other types of inclusion consisting of 1-aqueous solution, a much more expansible liquid, and a gas; 2-aqueous solution, salt crystals, and a gas; and 3-the very expansible liquid and a gas. The very expansible liquid fills the gas space between 20° and 30°C. Compression strain effects were seen around inclusions in diamond, topaz, and other minerals.2-6 Sorby in 1858 and 1869 further advanced the study begun by Davy, stating that fluid inclusions represent a sample of the mother liquor of crystallization and that the degree of filling of aqueous inclusions at room temperature defines the temperature-pressure relations during formation of the host. The degree of filling may be measured by determining the minimum temperature of filling of the inclusion by the liquid phase. The very expansible liquid in some fluid inclusions is liquid. carbon dioxide. The temperature at which salt crystals in fluid inclusions completely dissolve in the fluid is the minimum temperature of formation. Inclusions of glass or devitrified glass indicate crystallization from a melt. Inclusions of crystals in minerals are often centers of strain, which may be seen by optical effects or by radial tension cracks. Sorby realized that an analysis of stress-strain relations about inclusions could be used to provide precise data on the temperature of crystallization, but the matter was never pursued.7,8 Hartley (1876, 1877),9,10 Hawes (1881),11 Wright (1881),12 Johnsen (1920),13 and Holden (1925)14

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, 1 ½ miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Co. operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Foote Mineral's Sunbright, Va., plant and to other customers. Exton, Pa. and New Johnsonville, Tenn., plants produce lithium com- pounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market and to the glass industry. Ceramic-grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation. Geology and exploration of the deposit have been described by T. L. Kesler, Chief Geologist of Foote Mineral Co., in the September 1961 MINING ENGINEERING. Measured ore reserves as published at that time were 20.7 million tons. The ore deposit consists of a series of lithium-bearing pegmatites enclosed in amphibolite and mica schist wall rocks. The general strike of the pegmatites is northerly, and in the southern part of the pit, they dip slightly towards the west. The largest body being mined has a fairly uniform thickness of about 200 ft. Other pegmatites in the pit area range from 20 to 100 ft in thickness. Minerals in the pegmatites are 20% spodumene, 32% quartz, 6% muscovite, 41 % feldspar and 1 % trace minerals.

The hardening of annealed copper during fatigue testing appears to be independent of the applied stress and to occur largely within the first 4000 cycles. Copper hardened by fatigue is more resistant to annealing than copper hardened by static means, and softens by a multistage process. Creep studies at 300°C show that copper hardened by fatigue also has greater resistance to creep than statically hardened copper. Some theoretical explanations are discussed. RECENT interest in the behavior of metals subjected to fatigue stems from observations of phenomena which could not be explained by current theories of the structure of metals. In 1953 Bullen et al.l showed that the hardening caused by fatigue at low stresses did not cause severe bending of the lattice as did hardening by static methods. This was later confirmed by Wood, 'and Broom and Ham.3 Clarebrough et al4 showed that as the stress level used in fatigue hardening was increased, bending of the lattice was introduced, eventually approaching that of metals deformed by conventional cold-working methods. The type of hardening introduced by fatigue has other interesting characteristics. Kemsley5 showed that copper fractured by fatigue at low stresses resisted annealing as compared to copper hardened an equal amount by static means. The work of Clarebrough etal, shows that the manner of energy release during annealing differs for fatigue-hardened and statically hardened metal in both magnitude and temperature range of release. In addition to hardening of the lattice, fatigue has been shown to cause softening in materials previously hardened by static methods,5 and also in age-hardened alloys.7 The superposition of a small fatigue stress on the static loading of high-temperature alloys has been shown to increase their resistance to creep.' The present work was an attempt to determine the relationship between fatigue hardening, resistance to annealing, and the creep properties of pure copper. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM The program described here was designed to answer three questions: 1) Can stress-cycle combinations well below the failure values give significant increases in hardness? 2) Does hardening, under different stress-cycle combinations, give increase resistance to annealing? And if so— 3) Does superior resistance to annealing confer superior creep properties over statically hardened material? Three-quarter hard OFHC copper was annealed in vacuo at 550°C for 1 hr to produce a strain-free material having a fine grain size and uniform hardness. (The standard deviation of the mean hardness of the annealed samples was less than + 1.9 Dpn). Annealing was performed after machining the fatigue specimens so as to avoid work-hardened surfaces. Jigs were used to avoid distortion. The fatigue properties of the annealed copper were determined using an accurately aligned Baldwin-Sonntag SF1-U machine operating at 1800 cycles per min. This limited the minimum number of cycles which could be examined to about 4000 stress reversals. Since failure resulted in specimen damage, hardness increase with number of cycles was measured by testing specimens fatigued to different fractions of the failure values. The results are shown in Fig. 1, and are superimposed on the S-N curve of the copper in Fig. 2. The resistance to annealing of fatigue-hardened material was compared to that of material hardened by uniaxial tensile straining. Specimens hardened to equal values by both methods were progressively annealed for 1 hr at temperature in vacuo. After each annealing treatment the hardness was measured using a Leitz Durimet hardness tester with a 500-g load. At least five tests were made for each hardness determination. The standard deviation for individual specimens varied from 0.26 to 1.48 hardness points. The results are shown in Figs. 3 to 5. The discontinuous nature of the annealing process has been brought out by drawing idealized curves through the data points. Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 19, January, 1908, pp. 1 to 31. BERNARD MACDONALD, Guanajuato, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Keyes's paper is very interesting to me because of my personal experience with the development of the ore-deposits of Lake Valley. Seeing that many of the important facts connected with the early history of the development of these mines are either now unknown, or have become more or less distorted, and thinking that it would be interesting as well as valuable to have these recorded as a historical supplement to Mr. Keyes's elaborate paper, I present the following narrative: In February, 1881, soon after the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fé railroad made connection with the Southern Pacific at Denting, N. M., the Lake Valley properties were brought to the attention of New York and Philadelphia capitalists by John A. Miller, of Silver City, N. M. At that time silver was $1.10 all ounce and silver-mining was very attractive. Vast fortunes were being made in Leadville and other Colorado camps, and Tombstone was pouring out its millions. Lake Valley, like all' other mining-camps in their early history, had its drawbacks, but the railroad, then passing within 14 miles of it, mitigated many of these. The camp lay in the foot-hills of the Black range, in which the Apaches had their stronghold, and raided, when it suited their convenience, the surrounding country, killing the prospectors and pioneer settlers and stealing their cattle. This band of Indians was joined by the outlaws and desperadoes from the frontiers of Texas, Arizona, and Mexico, who collectively defied the United States soldiers, restrained, as the latter were, by the mollycoddles from the East. A slight decrease in drilling activity occurred in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania during 1945 and a considerable decrease in the shallow-gas territory (Upper Devonian or higher). The number of deep tests (Middle Devonian or deeper) completed was two less than in 1944 and these did not open any new reserves of natural gas. Thus far, no commercial oil has been encountered in sands below the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania. Oil production declined 8 per cent.

This paper describes the results of a laboratory investigation conducted to obtain data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. Air and fuel requirements, rates of advance, com-bustion temperatures, and coke and fluid distributions are presented. The mechanism of oil recovery by in stiu combustion is discussed. Five crude oils ranging in gravity from 10.9 to 34.2"' API were prodrrced from a semiadiabatic, uncon-.solidnted sand pack by in situ combustion. Experimental conditions were varied over a wide range in order to determine the inter-relation-.ships of process variables. The mini-mum air flux requirement for self-sustained combustion was found to he less than 10 scf/hr-ft'l. The rate of advance of a self-sustained combustion zone was found to be nearly proportional to the air flux at the combustion front. The effects of presrure and injected air flux were studied in a series of experiments using a 21.2" API crude. A minimum air require-ment was observed at an air .flux of 20 scf/hr-ft'. The oil saturation con-sumed as fuel averaged 5.5 per cent of pore volume. The effect of air pressure was, found to be .small for experiments having high combustion eficiencies. This study should promote a better understanding of the problems and mechanisms involved in labora-tory investigations and field applications of the in situ combustion pro-cess. The data presented will be use- ful in the interpretation of results of field tests. When tempered with volu-metric sweep efficiencies, the data can be used in making preliminary economic appraisals of the process as applied to reservoirs containing high porosity unconsolidated media. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this work was to obtain laboratory data for an evaluation of the in situ combustion process as a method of producing crude oil from reservoirs. In situ combustion basically consists of (1) injecting air into a reservoir through selected input wells to create an air sweep through the reservoir, (2) igniting the crude at the injection well, and (3) propagating the combustion front through the reservoir by continued air injection. By this means, oil is swept toward producing wells in the area. The fuel for combustion is supplied by heavy residual material (coke) which has been deposited on the sand grains during distillation and cracking of the crude oil ahead of the combustion front. Recovery of petroleum by a combustion or heat wave process is not a new idea. F. A. Howard was granted a patent in 1923 on a process in which air and a combustible gas were pumped into an injection well and ignited.' Russian engineers reported on field experiments with a crude oil gasification process in 1935'. Other known early field tests include those conducted near Bar-tlesville and Ardmore, Okla., in 1942." More recently completed field tests include an inverted seven-spot by Sinclair Oil Co. in the Delaware-Childers field, Nowata County, Okla.'; a three-well and an inverted five-spot test by Magnolia Petroleum Co. in Jefferson County, Okla."."; and a test by California Research Corp. in the Irvine-Furnace field in Kentucky. The Worthington Corp. has completed a test in cooperation with the Forest Oil Corp. in Clark County, 111.l Several field tests are now in progress. Sinclair has acquired a 600-acre lease in the Humboldt-Chanute field, Allen County, Kans., and is under way with a large-scale operation. Three field tests are under way in California. The General Petroleum Corp. is conducting an inverted five-spot pattern test in the South Bel-ridge field in Kern County under a cooperative agreement with 11 other companies, including Continental Oil Co. California Research Corp. is conducting a four-well pattern test in Midway-Sunset field near Maricopa, and Richfield Oil Corp. is under way with a test in the Ojai field in Ventura County. Although the published information is valuable concerning results of field tests, little laboratory data other than that reported by Kuhn and Koch5 are available to aid in appraising the tests from a technical or economic standpoint. Engineering data needed to evaluate the process include the amount of air required per barrel of oil recovered, minimum injection rates which will support combustion, rates of advance, air required per unit volume of reservoir cleaned, amount of oil recovered, and amount of oil consumed as fuel. The present laboratory investigation was undertaken to provide these data for that portion of the reservoir swept by the combustion zone. THE phenomenon of air-hardening is well known in connection with special steels. It occurs when the rate of decomposition of austenite to marten- site is so retarded that it takes place on free cooling in air rather than on more rapid cooling in a quenching bath. If an air-hardening steel is quenched sufficiently rapidly it will remain in the soft austenitic state, while if it is cooled very slowly it will again become soft owing to growth of the carbide particles. It depends on a critical adjustment of the decomposition velocity and diffusion rate, and such alloys are rather rare, especially in the non-ferrous field. In carrying out some experiments on some copper- rich copper-cobalt alloys, the author found that these possess very marked air-hardening properties. The alloys are covered by a patent issued to M. G. Corson (1,723,022-1919), which states that an alloy containing between 2 and 5 per cent cobalt is hardened by simple quenching from above 850° C.

IN THE FIELD of track haulage, interest has seemed to center on the question of larger mine cars both for handling material from loading point to shaft bottom or surface, and for shuttle service. Saving of time in car changing is obvious if larger cars are used. In addition, shorter trips result where car transportation is from face to opening without transfer. This also brings about side-track and equipment savings. Track shuttle service, using large automatic-dump cars (10 tons) between loading machines and trip loading point, has been a satisfactory solution for the operator who mechanizes a working mine regularly equipped with a large number of small mine cars. This development in track shuttle haulage, has made track installation and maintenance increasingly important, requiring closer supervision.

TWENTY million people in this country and Canada in nearly four million homes can give thanks to our Creator for natural gas, that most wonderful natural fuel with which Dame Nature has so bountifully blessed us. It is a clean, healthy and cheerful fuel, made up almost entirely of carbon and hydrogen. There is no residue, no waste and there are no objectionable constituents; an ideal fuel for the home. It operates like magic, open the valve and it is there for your needs, winter or summer, night or day. You are not required to place your order 30 to 90 days in advance and you do not need to pay for your winter's supply in advance. No ashes to worry about, no flues or chimneys to clean, nor kindling wood to store or bother the housekeeper. We who have been so blessed do not realize what it would mean to be without it. If in place of opening a valve we had to go to the woodshed or coalhouse and then build our fire-carry out the ashes-well, some of us I am afraid would be late reaching our offices and perhaps would miss our hot cakes for breakfast. One cubic foot of gas produced from the White Sand formation contains 1130 B.t.u. and weighs 47/1000 lb.; there are about 24,000 B.t.u. in 1 lb. of gas. Temperatures of over 3400 deg. Fahr. have been obtained with natural gas. Not only is it a superior fuel for the home but it has no equal for use in many large manufacturing industries, especially with the making of glass, pottery and open-hearth steel. In an open-hearth furnace, properly constructed, 5000 cu. ft. will melt one ton of steel. It requires 1/3 ton of bituminous coal gasified in a producer to do the same work, or about 40 gal. of tar or fuel oil, or 11,000 cu. ft. of by-product gas.

During the last year I had occasion, on behalf of our New York copper works, to send to various chemists samples, intended to he accurate, of material which we were buying and selling, and I was astonished to find what differences were reported. After talking over the probable reasons for this with a number of chemists and metallurgists, it was suggested that it would be of real use and some scientific interest to send samples to the different chemists, and take such care in making up the samples that we could feel sure that each chemist had as nearly identical a sample as it was possible to make. EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,[1] little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district.

THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water -by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other, adsorbent earths.

IN a laboratory devoted to the furtherance of the science of communication, the breadth and variety of the problems encountered are challenging to a metallurgist. In my own long association with the Bell Telephone Laboratories, our metallurgical group has dealt with a vast number of alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, and with many materials in the border range of metallic properties., The objectives of our design engineers embrace every phase of telephony, and the properties they desire in metals are generally unusual, frequently unique, and often conflicting. Commercial alloys have not always been available with properties to meet a special requirement in the telephone plant, and many alloys have had, therefore, to be custom-made. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe the results of tests of all types on numerous such alloys, both commercially and specially produced, or who has taken part in the development of an alloy of some necessary, but new or unusual combination of properties, could not fail to be impressed by the frequency with which a desired goal has been reached or adequately approached through the presence of decimal quantities of alloying elements. Nor could One fail to be struck by the occasions when, conversely, of a minute amount Of impurity element has rendered an alloy useful. It is no exaggeration to state that the content be- hind the decimal point often spells success or fail-ure, and the critical content is sometimes far to the right of the decimal point as I shall later illustrate. The great effects of small additions have long been recognized and have, in fact, been described by many investigators. The importance of the minute, however, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in this discussion, I propose to illustrate for you some of the startling instances, drawn primarily from our own experiences, wherein small, even vanishingly small, proportions of stranger elements in otherwise common aggregates have com-pletely changed the customary pattern of behavior. No one property has a monopoly as to being dis-proportionately affected by minor elements. Nearly all properties are affected, but there is time here to include only a selected few. I have chosen, there-fore, three of general interest: strength, magnetic, and electrical properties. I shall inquire into both the mechanisms and consequences of these disproportionate effects and try to share with you the fascination and challenge of this field. Strength Properties of Lead and Lead Alloys To illustrate the effect of the minute on strength properties I have selected lead and its alloys, with which we have worked extensively for many years. Lead has the advantages of being available in quantity in a state of high purity and of being fairly easy to melt and fabricate without contamination to any extent detectable by the spectrograph. THIS process is performed in the Pernot puddling furnace; it removes from 75 to 80 per cent. of the phosphorus, most of the sulphur, and practically all the silicon, from crude iron, in from five to eight minutes. It has been in regular use since March, 1877, and has prod uced over seventeen thousand tons of washed metal for the open-hearth furnace. During two years, nearly all, and lately, all the open-hearth steel produced in these works has been made from about 5 tons of washed pig and 2 tons of scrap per open-hearth furnace heat. There are 12 open-hearth furnaces, of which 4 to 9 are running, according to the state of orders. A large amount of highly phosphoric iron from France and Belgium has been also washed and then puddled for parties who have taken, or are expected to take, licenses. The washing of pig for puddling, however, is not a practice at Krupp's works, because pure pigs are nearly as cheap as impure ones. The author and his assistant, Mr. Laureau, spent, during the last month, three days at Krupp's works, examining this process. They copied out of the office books characteristic analyses and physical tests, some of which are given herewith. They also brought hone many samples of pig, cleaned metal, puddle bar, and steel, which they saw treated. Analyses of some of these samples appear in Table IV. As there are no blast furnaces at Essen, the iron is melted in two Bessemer cupolas with fore-hearths; they melt 12g pounds of iron with 1 pound of coke. The metal is run by a spout from the fore-hearth into an opening at the side of the main door of the washing-furnace. The Washing furnace.-This is a regenerative gas furnace. It has a Pernot revolving-hearth of 12 feet external diameter and 3 feet depth. (See Plate.) This process is performed in the Pernot puddling furnace; it removes from 75 to 80 pel. cent. of the phosphorus, most of the sulphur, and practically all the silicon, from crude iron, in from five to eight minutes. It has been in regular use since March, 1877, and has produced over seventeen thousand tons of mashed metal for the openhearth furnace. During two years, nearly all, and lately, all the open-hearth steel produced in these works has been made from about 5 tons of washed pig and 2 tons of scrap per open-hearth furnace heat. There arc 12 open-hearth furnaces, of which 4 to 9 are running, according to the state of orders. A large amount of highly phosphoric iron from France and Belgium has been also washed and then puddled for parties who have taken, or are expected to take, licenses. The mashing of pig for puddling, however, is not a practice at Krupp's works, because pore pigs are nearly as cheap as impure ones. The author and his assistant, Mr. Laureau, spent, during the last month, three days at Krupp's works, examining this process. They copied out of the office books characteristic analyses and physical tests, some of which are given berewith. They also brought home many samples of pig, cleaned metal, puddle bar, and steel, which they saw treated. Analyses of some of these samples appear in Table IV. As there are no blast furnaces at Essen, the iron is melted in two Bessemer cupolas with fore-hearths; they melt 124 pounds of iron with 1 pound of coke. The metal is run by a spout from the forehearth into an opening at the side of the main door of the washingfurnace. The The washing-furnace.—This is a regenerative gas furnace. It has a Pernot revolving-hearth of 12 feet external diameter and 3 feet depth. (See Plate.) The story now unfolding on the Mesabi Range is more than just another chapter in the continuing history of iron mining. It is an epic of foresight, research and pioneering instinct just now culminating in the rapid growth of a new industry hardly more than ten years old. And that growth has been impressive. In the decade that has passed since Reserve Mining Co. blazed a trail as the first successful large- scale commercial taconite operation, the number of plants now existing or soon to be operating has grown to six. From Reserve's initial capacity of 3 million tons of pellets per year, total production capacity on the Range has surged to 31.5 million tons while capital investment has leaped from $300 million in 1955 to almost $1 billion today. During the past year alone, more than $500 million has been committed to these projects, an amount probably greater than that going into any other single mining area in the world. There is more yet to come.

Ix estimating the investment-value of a mining-property or plant, the value of which decreases with operation, it is often necessary to know the sum which must be set aside periodically from earnings either to renew the plant at the end off its life, or to return the capital involved when the earning-power of the investment has ceased. In such cases it is manifestly incorrect simply to divide the total amount to be retired by the number of periods (usually years) during which the investment shall be active, as the sums periodically withdrawn have a certain interest-earning power varying with the length of time they are held and with the opportunities afforded for their investment. But though the interest may be considered to accumulate regularly year by year, yet the rules and tables for compound interest do not apply, owing to the addition of a fixed amount of new money to the total at the beginning of each period. Briefly stated, the problem of sinking-funds is, to find the amount of money which must be periodically set aside at a certain rate of interest, regularly compounded, to yield a certain sum in a given, length of time. In most practical cases the interest is compounded and the fresh amount added at the same time-usually once a year-and on this basis the problem may be solved as follows
