This chapter discusses the evolution of high-speed shaft sinking in the South African goldfields. Whether we are talking of an additional shaft at an existing mine or the opening of a new mine, the increasing depth of the ore-bearing reef and the unremitting inflation of costs have provided the compelling incentive to shorten the time taken to sink a shaft and start earning revenue. The high costs of sinking a modern shaft system in South Africa are indicated by the recent example of a deep-level mine in the Orange Free State where the cost was nearly $22!42 million. This was for a single large shaft of 33 ft 6 in. diam (in all cases, shaft diameters refer to the finished diameter of the shaft, e.g., inside the concrete) and 7600 ft deep with a prestressed concrete brattice wall dividing the shaft into upcast and downcast compartments. Higher costs and the consequent demand for increased tonnages, deeper shafts with higher rock temperatures, which necessitate highly sophisticaled ventilation and refrigeration requirements, have all accentuated the importance of time in a shaft-sinking operation. Rectangular shafts with their simple design and comparatively reasonable sinking speeds remained popular for many years until greater mining depths combined with a host of the other allied problems inevitably led to changes in shaft design. Circular shafts appeared to offer many advantages, particularly when considering ventilation, strength, mechanization, and sinking through bad ground and heavily watered zones. However, these advantages were largely offset by the slow rate of advance necessitated by the need to stop sinking in order to line the shaft. The development of the curb ring which enabled lining to take place above the bottom of the shaft and the use of multideck stages allowing sinking and lining to be carried out concurrently resulted in a major break- through. Rectangular shafts, which are still popular elsewhere, have been superseded in South Africa by circular shafts which are almost without exception the only shafts sunk in our goldfields today.

SLATE (Thonschiefer, German; ardoise, French) is a rock, an aggregation of mineral grains, occurring in nature, which is used for roofing and other special purposes. It is finely granular and crystalline and generally derived from an originally clayey bed or series of beds. As a result of its having been put under essentially horizontal compression by geologic forces, this material now has its particles elongated and flattened so as to yield a very good rock cleavage along the flat surfaces of the minerals, a feature entirely independent of the original bedding in the rock. This is the gist of the definition adopted by the Committee on Slate of the American Society for Testing Materials. Slate differs in varying degrees from most other common rocks (such as limestone, sandstone, granite, and "trap") in chemical and mineral composition. Its most characteristic feature, however, is its tendency to fracture along a series of very nearly parallel and very closely spaced smooth planes, called cleavage planes. This property of cleaving, above all else, gives slate its industrial value. ORIGIN AND MODE OF OCCURRENCE Most of the features of slate might be anticipated from its origin. Being a rock rather than a mineral, its composition may vary consider- ably without impairment of value. In most slates, the material of which the rock is now composed was once deposited as clay on the bottom of a lake or sea. Subsequently these clayey strata were compressed by the kind of lateral pressure that folds rock strata, the minerals of the clay being changed or metamorphosed. In the chemical reaction involved, new and essentially plane-shaped minerals belonging to the mica groups were developed. Other minerals were formed but micas generally pre- dominated. These were oriented so that their two longer dimensions are approximately at right angles to the last effective direction of pressure. Since the crystals are thus subparallel, fractures can be developed easily along their surfaces, much as cards can be separated by inserting a knife blade between them. This plant is situated in the borough of Pottstown, on the banks of the Schuylkill river, between the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, on a plot of about 125 acres, most of which is reserved for future extensions. About 45 acres are to be used for houses, 40 of which have already been built. The accompanying plan will give a clear idea of the general arrangement of the works. Beginning at the lower or eastern end, the first building is the basic-cinder grinding-plant. At present, it consists of a 2000 mm. Jenisch ball-mill (Kugelfallmühle) similar to those used so extensively for grinding basic cinder in Europe. It was built by Herman LÖhnert, of Bromberg. The mill is very simple in design, and efficient in execution. About 13 horse-power is required to run it, and the average output is 20,000 pounds in 10 hours. The best work we have done is 29,000 pounds in 10 hours, with perfectly dry cinder. From 95 to 98 per cent. of the product will pass through a sieve with 100 meshes to the inch, while from 70 to 75 per cent. will pass through a 150-mesh sieve. The mill has been in service since last March, part of the time on double-turn, and the renewals and repairs have been very slight. The product of the plant is sold as a fertilizer. It runs from 18 to 24 per cent. in phosphoric acid, about 14 of which is reverted. The merits of this fertilizer were explained by Mr. W. H. Morris, at the Baltimore meeting of February, 1892 (Trans., xxi., 232), and by Mr. W. B. Phillips, at the Birmingham meeting of 1888 (Trans., xvii., 84). The results obtained by its use in Europe, where over 600,000 tons were used last year, are well known. Near the cinder-grinding plant will be situated the new machineshop, which is now being erected. The next buildings contain the brick-making plant and ovens.

In the zeal for opening up new ore-bodies, or for extracting the ore from attractive bodies already opened up, we very often lose sight of the fact, that, after all, the operation of a mine is a business proposition, pure and simple, and, for the best working-results, should be treated upon a strict business basis. Of course, in every mine of consequence, a record is kept of expenditures and receipts, and such glittering generalities as " gross receipts," " net receipts," " mining expenses," and a per cent. profit," can be told to the cent; but does this record show economy of management, as compared either with the same record of other months, or with the record of other mines of the same class ? Moreover, if such a record shows that the cost of mining is high, does it in any way enable the manager to put his finger on the leakage ? Does it necessarily follow that a mine which makes a profit of, say, 40 per cent. on 25-dollar ore, is doing less economical mining than one which saves 60 per cent. on 80-dollar ore ? Of course the figures in the latter case look the more attractive; yet when it comes to the point of saving everything which can be saved, and of cutting down expenses to the lowest possible cost of operation, the former mine is doubtless on the firmer and more economical financial basis. But as to the relative merits of the system of mining in the two cases, nothing could be decided without a basis of detailed comparison ; if one system is more economical than the other, why is it so, and wherein does the advantage lie ? This can be shown only by keeping accurately the cost of each mining operation. And no matter how dissimilar two mines may be in character and operation, yet there are a few general heads common to all mining operations. Face Preparation When one or more dirt bands1 occur in a seam of coal, the problem of elimination of impurities becomes manifest. The degree of completeness to which these impurities arc removed at the face has an important bearing upon labor costs, haulage costs and outside cleaning costs, and often the ash content of the product is markedly affected. Yet, because the present-day miller is paid for the number of tons he loads he often lacks interest in the quality of the coal. To insure a clean product, a system of penalties for dirty coal is enforced, but control of extraneous impurity content in the loaded coal is often inadequate and ineffectual when coal and banded impurity are shot as one. It seems only logical that to reduce the amount of impurities by proper face preparation before the men are permitted to load the coal is the most efficient method of preparation. Many mines with one or more bands of impurities in their seams are able to mine a desirable product with a comparatively small amount of surface preparation. In fact, three companies in West Virginia have recently changed their methods of fact* preparation, with most gratifying results. The first company (in the Kanawha field) after changing its cutting practice with the hope of relieving a sales problem, was rewarded by an approximate 3 per cent drop in ash in the product. Another company, operating in the same field, reduced its ash approximately 4 per cent by a change in cutting practice. The third company (in the Pocahontas field) found the wet washer inadequate in producing a marketable coal, and installed new cutting machines. Three cuts are now being made in each working place, and the results arc so satisfactory that the cleaning plant has been abandoned.

AERIAL photographic surveying and mapping is not new or unknown to geologists. However, it has been utilized but little before, principally because it is only within the last few months that practical means of adapting this method to the requirements of petroleum companies have been discovered. No American aerial survey company has taken up aerial surveying and mapping as an engineering service to be offered to petroleum companies and their geologists for use in undeveloped and jungle-covered petroleum areas. This method of surveying and mapping, however, is used by the War Department, the U. S. Reclamation Service, and Geological Survey, and the corresponding Departments of the Canadian Government. ADVANTAGES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEYING AND MAPPING The advantages of aerial photographic surveying and mapping to petroleum companies and their geologists are many. One of the most valuable is presented in the very first phase, or the exploration period. It is assumed that, when convinced that petroleum possibilities are present, a petroleum company has secured a concession of 8000 sq. mi. of unexplored area in Eastern Venezuela. The company may either have the entire area surveyed and mapped by the aerial photographic method, or send its chief field geologist up in an airplane so that he, from-an aerial reconnaissance, may reject certain portions that, for geological reasons, the company would not be interested in. He will then point out the regions that are to be surveyed and mapped. After the air-work is completed, the results are brought down, developed, and printed; then the resulting "contact prints" are given to the field geologist. They may be roughly assembled to give a general idea of the property in its entirety, or they are in shape to be examined in adjoining pairs under the stereo-scope. With this instrument, the geologist is enabled to make a minute examination of surface indications. The work of assembling and constructing a complete general or detailed map, according to the scales desired by the petroleum company and for the later office use, is continued by the aerial photographic company.

IT is intended to discuss in this paper the protection appliances used for high-temperature pyrometer installations involving the use of platinum couples and describe some of the characteristics of a new carborundum protection tube. Of all the components that go to make a complete pyrometer installation, the one given the least attention and the one about which there is the least exact information is the outer protection tube. This condition is unfortunate as much, and in some cases even the success of the equipment as a whole, depends on the proper type of protection. In the majority of cases, the installation is allowed to operate without attention until some part of the apparatus breaks clown. The outer tube is the component that usually fails and, more often than not, the failure causes breakage of the porcelain protection and ruin of the couple. This condition should be recognized and studied as it has a very important bearing upon the upkeep cost of pyrometer equipment. The cost of the outer protection tube is small compared with the cost of the platinum couple and procelain protection and it would well repay users of this type of equipment to replace their outer protection tubes at certain definite periods, which experience shows is necessary to prevent destruction of the platinum. Speaking generally, platinum thermocouple equipment is used for measuring temperatures over 2000° F. (1094° C.), and is used extensively for the control of brick and pipe kilns, glass pot furnaces, glass tank furnaces, heat-treating furnaces, open-hearth furnaces, and forge furnaces. A satisfactory protection tube must be sufficiently refractory not to soften at the maximum temperature within the furnace. It must be resistant to cracking clue to temperature changes, should be as nearly gas-tight as possible, and should be made of a material with a high thermal conductivity and great resistance toward erosion by the furnace atmosphere.

In a gold standard world which possesses insufficient metal to meet the every-day needs of all, confidence becomes the vital factor, the very foundation upon which the machinery for the expansion of gold into currency, and credit, rests. The gold supply, affected by many influences, moves constantly from one point to another, but not always to that point where it is most needed. In the period 1928-1930, the combined gold holdings of the United States and France increased $1,370,936,-000, and this with new gold adding only $600,000,000 to the monetary gold stock.Theref ore, the gold stocks of other countries must have been depleted during the period by $770,936,000. This uncontrolled shifting throws the delicately adjusted instrumentalities of both credit and commerce out of equilibrium. If a given nation's gold stock shifts so as to bring it substantially below the legal reserve ratio set up against it for currency issues, the effect can easily extend to the currency issues and banking credit volume of one or more nations which may have based their gold exchange standards upon the gold stock of such nation. Thus the substitution of paper based on gold in place of the actual gold is an inflation of the currency, which carries through into an uncontrolled pyramiding upon the entire machinery of credit based on gold. In 1929 Europe, South America, Africa and Asia had overissued currency based on gold. America, Oceanica and Japan, which have not overissued their gold currencies, would in normal times require their entire present gold stocks and, as Continental Asia is largely upon a silver credit basis, from a domestic standpoint, it would appear that the gold problem is not so much one of maldistribution, as it is one of inadequate supply. It would appear that some method of increasing greatly the velocity of gold, within the safe reserve point, should be devised, or that silver, of which estimates indicate that 7,000,000,000 oz. are available for

THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the adit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike's Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles', this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent. There is a large historical background for underground plant construc-tion. From the dim past caves have been used for dwellings, stables, storage and shops. It was natural that where caves were available their many advantages led to their enlargement to suit convenience and where they were not available but the ground conditions, topography and, drainage were favorable, to the construction of artificial caves. In the vicinity of Epernay, France, extensive underground chambers protect the manufacture and storage of champagne-an intricate and ingenious application of chemical engineering-and in recent years these plants have been mechanized by the installation of conveyor systems. A year ago, Marshall and Bird presented a paper in which a new method of measuring the agglutinating power of coal was described.' The procedure used was to determine the strength of a button containing 10 parts sand and one part coal, formed by carbonizing the mixture in a crucible in an electric furnace. The result of the determination was reported as the total weight in grams required to bring about complete destruction of the button. Correlations were shown between the agglutinating value and some of the characteristics of the different coals that were investigated. This agglutinating test has been in use fairly continuously during the past five years for coals of widely differing coking qualities, and it has shown reasonably concordant results accurate enough for commercial use, although there are many features of the test which should have further scientific study. During the past year a study has been made of some coals of low coking strengths, and incidental to the main investigation some data which appear to be of interest and value were obtained on the loss in agglutinating power caused by exposure to the air. Three coals were investigated, all of which were of the Tertiary age; two were from one field in Asia, and one from a field in the United States. The three were similar, as shown by the proximate and ultimate analyses in Table 1 (moisture-free basis). Coals SA and RA generally contain about 5 per cent. moisture and coal P about 3.5 per cent. moisture on the as-received basis. The large difference in the ash contents of the coals, amounting to practically 10 per cent. between SA and RA, and P, makes difficult a direct comparison of their qualities. In the second section of Table 1 the figures have been put upon an ash-free basis., This table shows that these coals are closely alike. Through the generosity of Sir Robert Hadfield, Honorary Member, the Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers are enabled to announce the Hadfield Research Prize of $1,000 for the best contribution to the publications of the Institute upon the general subject of The Different Forms and Combinations of Carbon with Iron, including those in Iron Alloys. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1916, to the best paper upon this subject which is presented to the Institute before Nov. 1, 1915, provided such paper is deemed worthy by the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee. The following suggestions are also added for the guidance of those who may take part in this research. While' it is not desired to define closely the exact lines or scope of the proposed research, as it is advisable to make these as broad as possible, the object in mind maybe said to be generally as follows: To elaborate and find out the best methods of determining the forms of carbon in steel or iron, including those in iron alloys. A portion of the work would probably be a continuation of the researches which have in the past been carried out by Jullien, Abel, Muller, Ledebur, T. Sterry Hunt, Akerman, Arnold, Stead, E. D. Campbell, Hogg, Parry, Upton, and others. In a generic way, metallurgists now speak of carbides, sub-carbides, double carbides, special carbides, and other combinations. It is very desirable that these should be accurately defined and understood. It is also desirable to know whether there are other or new forms; if so, can these be separated and their characteristics obtained. It may be interesting to point out that the carbon compounds now definitely known are stated to number over 80,000. It is very probable, therefore, that there is room for much valuable and useful research to be carried out with the object of increasing our knowledge of the various combinations of carbon with iron, as probably some of these are still unknown

AT THE beginning of September, the French eased their pressure against Germany and allowed the latter to, be granted an arrangement for its reparation payments in kind according to the Lubersac-Stinnes agreement. The whole arrangement as to the German reparations is, however, but temporary. The Greeks suffered a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Turks in Anatolia, which rapidly resulted in the expulsion of the Greeks from Asia Minor, the Turks occupying Smyrna about Sept. 10. A few days after entering Smyrna the Turks sacked the city and finally set it afire, creating one of the most terrible destructions in history. At the same time their advance on Constantinople, together with their demands on the Allies, brought them directly in, con-flict with the latter and Great. Britain prepared for a new war, with doubt as to the support of France, whose political interests in the Near East are as different as their economic interests with respect to ;Germany. The Turkish situation became thus a threat against the peace of Europe. A revolution in Greece, followed by the abdication of King Constantine and the return of Venizelos to a function in the Government was one of the conse-quences of the defeat in Asia Minor. Civil war continued in Ireland, with more or less -bloodshed. Economically there has been no change for the better in Europe. In Great Britain there, are no signs of an -important trade revival. In Germany and Austria things are worse. French, Italian and Spanish affairs continue in a bad way. In the United States business is represented as "booming," but many people are inquiring where is the boom? About the middle of September Congress passed the tariff and the soldier bonus bills. The President signed the former and vetoed the latter, with a strong message that won praise among people who understand condi-tions. Congress tried to pass the bill over the veto, but failed. The President signed the tariff bill, which became effective Sept. 21. A severe handicap was thus imposed on American economics.

The paper describes the application of the logarithmic wedge sector method of quantitative spectrography to the estimation of commonly occurring minor impurities in crude and refined tin. Both arc and spark methods of emission were employed and with the former a new device was used to overcome difficulties arising from the low melting point of the metal. The impurities investigated included antimony, arsenic, bismuth, copper, iron, lead, and zinc, their concentrations lying, in general, between 0.01 and 0.50 per cent. The results obtained show that the method may be usefully employed for the estimation of bismuth, copper, iron, lead, and zinc, in amounts ranging from 0.50 per cent to well below 0.01 per cent. Arsenic and antimony, however, could not be estimated in amounts less than 0.03 and 0.07 per cent respectively. Out of a total of 116 estimations by arc and spark emission, in 96 the errors were less than 5 per cent of the total quantity of the element present, whereas in the remaining twenty, the errors lay between 5 and 25 per cent. Spectro-analytical data for the several impurities studied are given in the form of tables, and curves correlating line-intensity with concentration have also been included. DISCUSSION (R. G. Smith, London, England (written discussion).—I am interested in Dr Hitchen's account of his investigations on the application of spectrographic methods to the assay of tin and congratulate him on his valuable contribution to the literature on the subject of quantitative spectrum analysis. Some of the results obtained in the course of investigations carried out for the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Assn., although obtained under somewhat different experimental conditions, may be of interest in connection with this paper. Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate is underway at the Bureau of Mines, Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center. The new route from concentrate to metal by which the Bureau seeks to eliminate matte smelting and converting includes a two-stage fluid bed treatment. In the first stage, pelletized concentrate containing 32%Cu and 7% S is first desulfurized to less than 1.0% S in an oxidizing atmosphere. In the second stage, the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10% CaO is routed to a smelting furnace which separates metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and Cu content at this point are in the 97-98% range. This product must be refined to remove sulfur and iron so the metal is suitable for making wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is fine concentrate pelletization prior to fluid-bed treatment. This permits a shorter reaction time, a decrease in dusting and easier subsequent processing. In a broad sense, sulfide copper pyrometallurgy is a batch sequence in three separate vessels, i.e., a reverberatory furnace to yield matte copper, a converter to produce blister copper and another reverberatory furnace to produce fire-refined copper. Matte-smelting has remained relatively unchanged since it became a universal practice some 50 to 60 years ago. It is now serving a wide range of smelter feed materials, but many concentrates are not immediately amenable to the process. There are abundant copper resources which lack sufficient sulfur and other elements lo sustain the full chemistry involved in matte-smelting. This necessitates adding sulfur to make the product fit the process, and usually none of the sulfur is recovered. From the standpoint of pollution alone, the development of a smelting technique for low-sulfur concentrates not requiring the addition of sulfur would be a significant gain.

May 219t, 1872. THE Institute assembled in the rooms of the Geographical Society at the Cooper Union, Tuesday evening at 8 P.M. President Raymond called the meeting to order, and introduced Mr. Abram S. Hewitt, who welcomed the Institute to New York. President Raymond, in behalf of the Institute, replied. The President then read the following report of the Council for the past year. The Council respectfully report that the American Institute of Mining Engineers has held four meetings-at Wilkes-Barre, Bethlehem, Troy, and Philadelphia, respectively-all of which have been well attended, and socially and professionally most successful. The proceedings of these meetings having been published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and sent to all members and associates, are sufficiently well known. Forty-four papers, by twenty-six authors, have been read. These papers embrace s wide range of subjects, and prove the practical character of the proceedings of the Institute. The finances are in a satisfactory condition. By the report of the Treasurer it appears that $1290.10 have been received, $519.90 expended, and that $770.20 now remains in the treasury exclusive of fees for 1872. This fund, it is hoped, will be so increased by voluntary subscriptions as to enable us before long to issue s volume of our most important transactions in a permanent form. The Council has made a favorable arrangement with the Scientific Publishing Company, publishing the Engineering and Mining Journal, by which that journal became the organ of the Institute for the first publication of the proceedings, papers, and notices to members. This arrangement it is proposed to continue through the present year unless the Institute shall otherwise direct. It is not intended to supersede the publication of an annual or occasional volume, but to maintain an interest in the Institute, and to serve the convenience of members while our funds do not permit s more ambitious publication.

There has been no noteworthy increase in production during 1935; but, on the other hand, there have been ample manifestations of a considerable increase in interest and activity in connection with petroleum prospecting. The Lakes Entrance field, in the State of Victoria, on the coast some 120 miles east of Melbourne, remains the only actual producer; and this production, consisting of lubricating stock devoid of light fractions, is very small in amount. Arrangements have been completed under which a series of "scout bores" for structure testing in the region of Lakes Entrance will be sunk by the Government of the State of Victoria, assisted by a subsidy from the Federal Government. Prospecting In the State of New South Wales, brilliant geological research in very difficult country, carried out by geologists of Oil Search Ltd., has revealed several previously unsuspected domal structures in the Sydney-Newcastle coal basin. These have been mapped in detail, and a test well is being sunk at Kulnura, 10 miles west of Wyong and 40 miles north of Sydney. At the date of writing this well has reached a depth of 1250 ft., 10-in. casing having been set at 1248 feet. Superficial formations consist of the Hawkesbury sandstone and Narrabeen beds of the Hawkes-bury system (fresh-water Triassic). It is anticipated that the upper coal measures of the Kamilaroi (Permo-Carboniferous) will be entered almost immediately. The objectives of the drilling are the upper and lower marine beds of the Kamilaroi system, which are regarded as promising as potential source—and reservoir—beds for oil. At Mulgoa, 30 miles west of Sydney, a bore is being sunk by the same company, Oil Search Ltd., to test for natural gas on a well defined structure located by the company's geologists. Noteworthy flows of gas have been encountered, but nothing approaching a commercial supply has been struck. It is considered probable that the gas has been derived
