IRON ore is the cause of the present trouble in Morocco. At least three nations are interested in the outcome and private syndicates have been active. The iron deposits are found in that mountainous northern coast line known as the Rif. This is an uplift that has been cut through, by the northward drainage, representing an ancient land surface. Erosion has produced .a fiordlike coast, which circum- stance has aided contraband' traffic to the tribes dominated by Abd-el-Krim, the chief of the clan of the Beni Urriaguel, near the center of 'the north coast, opposite Alhucemas. The iron deposits are extensive in the territory of the Beni Urriaguel. They were "located," if such a term is permissible, many years ago. The first arrangements, through direct contracts with the tribal chieftains, have been reinforced by compliance with the subsequent code under the Spanish protectorate in 1914. Under those terms, the location had to be made through the Arbitral Commission sitting in Paris. These locations, or "denouncements," were made by the I-louse of Mannesmann, of Hamburg.

DESPITE the fact that its membership is spread over every continent of the globe, the Petroleum Division was able to report a very substantial attendance at its meetings. Careful planning on the part of its chairman, J. B. Urnpleby, and his associates resulted in the presentation of a program that was of timely interest -and led to discussions that will unquestionably prove to be of major value to the petroleum engineer and to the oil industry in general. Scheduling of meetings so as to avoid all conflicts made it possible to obtain a higher average attendance at the several sessions* than in previous years, and gave everyone a chance to hear all of the papers that he was interested in. The chairmen of the various meetings are to be congratulated especially for their skill in handling them so that at .no time was there the least indication of lagging interest.

WHEN scientific literature was lacking or meager, research necessarily meant laboratory investigation above all else. Today, scientific literature has attained tremendous proportions, and the volume increases at a much faster rate than it is digested and efficiently utilized. For that reason the present-day research worker should spend much more time in the library, and correspondingly less in the laboratory, than is the general custom. Library research would overcome two serious errors often made by scientists: duplication of work described completely and failure to appreciate inventions described almost verbatim in the literature. To emphasize these failings that often occur in present-day research, consider a hypothetical scientist as he conducts his search from inception to the stage where it is made available to the public by patent or other publication.

The distribution of carbon and the type of substructure in iron-carbon martensites containing 0.02 to 0.57pct C has been studied in the as-quenched condition and after tempering at 25" to 700°C by using electrical resistivity, internal friction, hardness, and light and electron microscope techniques. in marten-sites containing less than 0.2 pct C, almost 90 pct of the carbon segregates to dislocations and to lath boundaries during quenching; in martensites containing greater than 0.20 pct C, appreciable amounts of carbon enter normal interstitial positions located far from defects. Tempering martensites with carbon contents below 0.20 pct at temperatures below 150°C results in additional carbon segregation to dislocations and to lath boundaries but no carbide precipitation whereas -carbide precipitation occurs in martensites with carbon contents exceeding 0.2 pct. Above 150°C, a rod-shaped carbide (either Fe3C or Hagg) is precipitated in all cases. At 400°C, spheroidal Fe3C precipitates at lath boundaries and at former aus-tenite grain boundaries. At 400" to 600"C, recovery of the martensite defect structure occurs. At 600" to 700°C, recrystallization of the martensite and Ost-waW ripening of the Fe3C occur. The effects of the carbon segregation that occurs during quenching and the subsequent substructural changes that occur during tempering on martensite tetragonality, hardness, and precipitation behavior are discussed. A mathematical analysis of carbon segregation during quenching is presented. RECENT studies of the strength of low-carbon martensitel-4 emphasize the importance of carbon segregation to the martensite lath boundaries and to the dislocations contained between them during quenching. Unfortunately, very few studies of the tempering of low-carbon martensites have been conducted, so the exact nature of this segregation is poorly understood. In fact, most early tempering studies5,6 were restricted to carbon contents greater than 0.20 pct. Moreover, these studies did not determine the amount of carbon segregated to the martensite substructure during quenching so that the initial state of the martensite was not established. Aborn7 studied the precipitation of carbide in low-carbon martensite during quenching but did not establish whether carbon segregation occurs prior to carbide precipitation, nor did he study the subsequent tempering sequence in detail. In the present work we have used electrical resistance and internal friction measurements, supplemented by electron transmission microscopy to establish the carbon distribution in as-quenched specimens. Specimens thin enough to avoid carbide precipitation (but not carbon segregation) were employed. The redistribution of carbon on subsequent tempering below 250°C was followed by measurements of elec- trical resistance. Additional studies were made on specimens tempered at 250" to 700°C to elucidate the overall tempering behavior of low-carbon martensites, including the formation of cementite and recrystalli-zation of the martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Eight iron-carbon alloys with 0.026, 0.057, 0.097, 0.18, 0.20, 0.29, 0.39, and 0.57 wt pct C were prepared as 8-lb ingots by vacuum melting. Typical impurities in wt ppm were 40 Si, 20 Mn, 30 S, 10 P, and 10 N. These alloys were hot rolled to 3 in. plate at 1095°C) (2000°F). The hot-rolled plates were surface ground to remove scale and the decarburized layer, then cold rolled to 0.010 in. sheet. Specimens cut from the sheet were austenitized for 30 min at 1000°C (1830°F) in a vacuum tube furnace in which the pressure did not exceed 2 x 10-3 torr. Chemical analysis of specimens after austenitization indicated no decarburization at this pressure. Immediately before quenching, the furnace was filled with prepurified helium. The specimen was then pushed rapidly through an aluminum foil gasket, which sealed the bottom of the furnace, into an iced-brine bath (10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH). The quenching rate at the M, temperature is about 104'c per sec for 0.010 in thick specimens, as calculated from Newton's law of heat flow2 using a heat transfer coefficient of 25 ft-'. This quenching rate is sufficiently high so that all the alloys transformed completely to martensite throughout the entire 0.010 in thickness and no carbide precipitation occurred in the martensite. All specimens were immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen after quenching and stored there until needed. Tempering below 250°C (480°F) was done in silicone oil baths thermostatically controlled to *;"C. Tempering above 250°C was done in circulating air furnaces or lead pots with the specimens contained in evacuated silica capsules. Electrical resistance was determined by measurement of the potential drop across both a standard resistance and the specimen, connected in series. All resistance measurements were made in liquid nitrogen (77K, -196°C) to minimize thermal scattering of electrons and thus maximize the contribution of impurity scattering to the resistance. Specimen dimensions were 5.10 by 0.19 by 0.025 cm. Although the precision in the electrical resistance measurements was +0.1 pct, the electrical resistivities could only be measured with an accuracy of +5 pct because of uncertainty in the specimen dimensions. Internal friction measurements were performed in an inverted pendulum apparatus at vibration frequencies of either 1.9 or 66 Hz. The specimen dimensions were 5.10 by 0.375 by 0.025 cm. Hardness measurements were made with a Leitz-Wetzlar microhardness machine with loads of 100 g. Specimens were examined by light microscopy after etching in 2 pct Nital and by electron transmission microscopy after preparation of thin sections by electrolytic thinning in a chromic-acetic acid solution.

TRANSPORTING concrete from mixer to forms has always been a problem. Twenty-five years ago this task was generally accomplished by means of wheelbarrow or concrete buggy. On large dam jobs, as the number of these projects increased, the gantry crane or highline came into use. Today several methods of handling concrete are employed on smaller surface construction jobs, for example, transit-mix trucks or dumpcrete trucks, which have crawler cranes with buckets for placing concrete into forms. In 1944, during early stages of developing Mather mine A shaft, several large underground concrete jobs were necessary. At this time the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co, purchased the first pump-crete machine, introduced by the Chain Belt Co. of Milwaukee. The machine was used to pour approximately 200 cu yd of concrete for a dam, or bulkhead, located 400 ft from the shaft. Concrete was mixed on surface, lowered down the shaft 1000 ft in a 2-cu yd bucket hung under one skip, spouted into the bowl of the pumpcrete machine from the bucket, and pumped directly into the forms. Since the day of the first pipeline concrete in 1944 to the present time, other equipment and other methods have been developed to permit transportation of concrete by pipeline through vertical and horizontal distances totaling 1 mile from mixer to forms. Much of the efficiency in present handling of underground concrete can be credited to the Bethlehem Cornwall mines, where concrete was transported through 6-in. pipe for great distances down an inclined shaft and along levels into forms.' During initial development of Mather mine B shaft, with concrete work under way on two or more levels at one time, the pneumatic concrete placer, Fig. 1, was selected as best adapted for underground concrete transportation. The 3/4-cu yd pneumatic placer is a small machine readily moved from one location in the mine to another. It can be equipped with two sets of mine car wheels, which will permit moving on regular mine tracks. It is therefore possible to send concrete through the pipe at great velocity; the pipeline is clean after each shot except for the film of cement adhering to the inside. With the proper slump in the concrete, it is possible to shoot concrete 2000 ft with this machine, using the mine supply of compressed air at 95 psi. This equipment was first used at Mather mine B shaft to concrete slusher drifts, Figs. 2 and 3, and finger raises located about 2000 ft from the shaft. In several instances there were bends into crosscuts and up vertical distances into the forms. For the first pours two placers were used. The first was located near the shaft where the concrete could be spouted into it from a 2-cu yd concrete bucket on the cage. The second was set on the side of the drift at a point approximately 1500 ft from the shaft. The concrete was shot directly into the second placer from the first unit and from the second machine directly into the forms. After completion of several pours with the two machines, a trial pour with only one placer located at the shaft proved that the second placer could be eliminated. Since then all pours have been successfully completed with only one placer underground. As production of iron ore from the mine increased and the development program expanded, use of the cage for handling mine supplies and concrete became a major problem. This brought about the first attempt at shooting concrete vertically down the shaft for 2600 ft. A 6-in. pipeline with victaulic couplings installed during shaft sinking was used for the trial. One placer was set on surface 250 ft from the collar of the shaft so concrete could be spouted directly into it from the mixer. This machine shot the concrete 250 ft horizontally on surface to the shaft, 2600 ft vertically down the shaft, and 100 ft horizontally into the second placer located near the rib of the shaft station or plat. The second machine shot the batch into the forms, about 2000 ft. Total distance horizontally and vertically was 4800 ft. The entire time cycle for a ¾-cu yd batch of concrete from the mixer on surface to the forms underground totaled about 5 min. During the past two years the two-placer method from the mixer on surface to the forms underground has proved a very efficient means of transporting underground concrete. Advantages of using pipeline concrete are as follows: 1—Interference with normal mining operation is eliminated. When the cage, skips, mine cars, or mine openings are used for transporting concrete and materials used for making concrete, mine operation suffers in one way or another.

Recovery, recrystallization, and texture development of a cold-rolled aluminum-killed steel have been studied during simulated box annealing. Two different initial conditions existed prior to cold rolling: 1) essentially all of the nitrogen in solid solution and 2) most of the nitrogen precipitated as AlN. The combined effect of nitrogen and aluminum in solid solution before annealing was to inhibit recovery and sub-grain growth at temperatures above about 1000°F and to raise the recrystallization temperature range on continuous heating at 40°F per hr from 1000"-1050°F to 1065"-1085°F. For the material with nitrogen and aluminum initially in solution there was an inhibition in the nucleation of the (001) [110] texture component and an enhancement of the (111) [110] texture component. The differences in annealing behavior mzd texture development are attributed to preprecipitation clustering of aluminum and nitrogen at subboundary sites developed by prior cold working. THE annealing of cold-worked aluminum-killed steels has been the subject of numerous investigations.'-'2 These studies have been concerned with kinetics of recrystallization, with microstructure and texture development, and with the individual and combined effects of composition, thermal history prior to cold rolling, and heating rates during subsequent annealing. It has been shown that the inhibition of recrystallization, and the development of the pancake-shaped grain and recrystallization texture characteristic of aluminum-killed steels, can be associated with the precipitation of A1N particles during a recrystallization anneal involving heating rates in the range 20" to 80°F per hr. If the AIN is precipitated before cold rolling or if more rapid heating rates are employed, the cold-rolled steels recrystallize more rapidly to an equiaxed grain structure and texture comparable to that of rimmed low-carbon steel. The retardation of recrystallization, the development of the elongated grain structure, and the pronounced (111) texture have been attributed to: 1) precipitation of A1N at prior cold-worked grain boundaries to form a mechanical barrier to grain boundary migration;' 2) precipitation on the boundaries of the growing recrystal-lizing grains as well as on cold-worked grain boundaries;'" and 3) preprecipitation clustering or precipitation on subboundaries to retard recovery, nucleation, and growth. The present study was undertaken to study in more detail recrystallization and texture development during commercial box annealing of cold-rolled aluminum-killed steels. Comparison of the annealing be- havior after cold rolling, for two different conditions prior to cold rolling, was made in an attempt to define more clearly the role of aluminum and nitrogen in forming the recrystallization texture. A) MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was a commercial low-carbon aluminum-killed steel which was hot-rolled with a finishing temperature of about 1565"F, then coiled at about 1020°F. The composition, in wt pct, was: 0.050 C, 0.30 Mn, 0.007 P, 0.019 Si, 0.03 Cu, 0.02 Ni, 0.02 Cr, 0.045 Al, and 0.004 N. Two 4.5 by 13 by 0.078 in. sections were cut from the center section of a hot-rolled panel and one of these was reheated to provide two different conditions prior to cold rolling: low AlN: as commercially hot-rolled, with aluminum and nitrogen in solid solution; and high AlN: as commercially hot-rolled, then reheated at 1300°F for 3.5 hr to precipitate most of the nitrogen as AlN. ~etallc&a~hic examination indicated that the reheating did not change grain size nor carbide distribution (some spheroidization of pearlite was noted). Texture analysis at half-thickness level showed that both sections had the same substantially random as-hot-rolled texture. The results of check chemical analysis of each sample are given in Table I. Both sections were cold-reduced 65 pct on a laboratory rolling mill to a final thickness of 0.027 in. Cold rolling, in one direction only, was in the direction of the prior hot rolling. Specimens 1.0 by 1.25 in. were cut from the cold-rolled sheets and given a simulated box anneal in an atmosphere of 2 pct HZ-98 pct He. Specimens were heated at a constant rate of 40°F per hr from room temperature to various temperatures in the range 750" to 1300°F and cooled immediately by withdrawal to the water-cooled end of a tube furnace. The temperature in the 6-in. uniform hot zone of the furnace was controlled within 3"F. Selection of the individual specimens was made to give a random distribution of annealing temperatures with respect to location in the cold-rolled sheet. At least two specimens of each condition were annealed to the same temperature and smaller specimens for light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray studies were prepared from each of these. INTEREST in silicon has arisen again in the past decade as a result of improvements in crystal rectifiers.' Although the preparation of silicon was first reported by Berzelius in 1880, the early product was of relatively low purity, and only the need for rectifiers in World War II led to the production of a 99.9+ pct pure powder. This material in crystalline form was consolidated into massive silicon for use, and the method developed was to melt it with selected added constituents as "doping" agents. Melting techniques, therefore, are of great importance. There are two basic problems in producing silicon ingots free of doping additions; one is the prevention of spitting and the other is prevention of cracking of the ingot during freezing. The most satisfactory arrangement yet developed for producing massive silicon is to melt and freeze in a cylindrical quartz crucible surrounded by a concentric heating element and concentric radiation shields or insulation. For example, use can be made of a tubular heater with a high frequency generator as the source of power and reflecting shields of alundum cylinders. The spitting of silicon is related to gas evolution, and the gas comes from two primary causes—adsorbed gas and the reaction products of silicon and the crucible. Gas is also released from bubbles contained in the quartz crucible walls. Improved removal of adsorbed gas can be achieved by means of controlled melting and freezing. The seriousness of the problem in vacuo is reduced with an electrically operated mechanical movement of the high frequency power coil. The upper portion of the powder charge is melted first and the high frequency coil lowered until the powder is completely molten. During cooling the high frequency coil is raised slowly. These means also reduce the final nonviolent extrusion of large beads of metal through the ingot top during freezing. Better control of spitting and bead extrusion is obtained when melting is done under helium at. atmospheric pressure instead of in vacuo. The problem of reaction between silicon charge and crucible in practice is confined to the reaction between silicon and quartz. This2 apparently is: Si + SiO2 + 2SiO The part that this reaction plays in spitting has not been isolated for separate study. SiO is a volatile vapor at the melting point; of silicon and is released freely during melting in vacuo, but hardly at all in helium at atmospheric pressure. The cracking of ingots is a major difficulty in melting silicon, and its prevention requires special melting techniques or the addition of "toughening" agents such as aluminum or beryllium.' The cracking of the ingots has been explained as being the result of the expansion that occurs upon freezing; although direct observation of freezing ingots reveals visible cracks on the surface only after a red heat has been reached, suggesting that cracking is the result of differential contraction of silicon and quartz. Silicon wets quartz, and the ingot adheres tightly to the crucible. Therefore as ingot and crucible cool, the two either have to pull apart, or at least one must crack. Surprisingly, in spite of the relative thinness of the quartz and the thickness of the ingot, the ingot and the crucible both crack. Microscopic and X-ray4 studies fail to show any plastic flow other than twinning in the ingots. Slow cooling fails to prevent cracking. Another possible solution to cracking is to weaken the crucible. Use of thin-walled crucibles finally led to success with fused quartz crucibles with a wall thickness of 0.25 to 0.50 mm. With such thin-walled fused quartz crucibles consistently uniform success is secured in producing sound ingots 30 mm in diam from the purest available grade of silicon (99.9+) without the use of any type of addition. Melts are made in the size range of 50 to 100 g. Omission of a deliberately added doping agent is not sufficient to insure pure ingots. The reaction of silicon with crucibles and the resultant solution of impurities in the silicon is well-established." In this laboratory, the presence of Al, Be, and Zr has been found spectroscopically in ingots melted in contact with alumina, beryllia, and zircon. The best crucible materials reported in the literature are MgO and SiO2. Use of MgO in this laboratory has resulted in a heavy deposit of magnesium on the furnace walls, showing that a reduction of the magnesia occurred and the resulting magnesium removed from the melt by volatilization. In the case of quartz, the silica is reduced and SiO liberated to deposit on the equipment walls. There probably is real danger that oxygen is dissolved in the ingot when either magnesia or silica is used as the crucible material. Preliminary analyses by Dean Walter in his vacuum unit in this laboratory6 indicate the presence of oxygen in undoped silicon melted in quartz.

IN making a glass model of mine-workings, each mine will present some little individualities, to meet which will call for the exercise of special ingenuity. Having made several models, I offer the following details of the model of the Montana-Tonopah mine-workings, believing that with small changes for different conditions the method described can be successfully used in making a glass model of the workings of any mine. The model, Fig. 1, has the top, one end, and the front removed. The case is made of kiln-dried pine, painted with several coats of dead-white paint. It is made to take sheets of glass 24 by 42 in. in size, and is 18 in. high, the workings shown being on a scale of 1 in. = 40 ft., or 4800 : 1 scale. The base is made of four pieces of 2-in. material, well pinned and glued together. The back, of material 1 in. thick, is secured rigidly to the base by screws and countersinking. The four posts, 1.5 in. square, are so cut that. the front and two ends of the model fit in flush with the outside edges of the posts. The top rails, 1 in. square, are fastened rigidly to the front and back posts by means of small iron braces. The ends, front, and top of the case are of 0.5-in. material; the ends and front are held in place at the bottom by pegs fitting into the base ; at the top the ends are held by buttons and the front by cupboard-hooks on the inside. Hinged hasps on the cover, fitting over staples in the end-pieces, make it easy to lock the entire case. Before the back is fastened to the base, it is cut with horizontal and vertical grooves to receive the horizontal and vertical sheets of glass, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontal grooves, spaced to scale, represent the vertical distances between the levels at the shaft. The vertical grooves are placed wherever cross-sections of the workings are desired.

TROUGH it is not a condition of the Award, the fact is that the John Fritz Medal never has been given to an engineer who had not already received one or more similar awards. This "medal for medalists," on the evening of April 20, was presented to Daniel C. Jackling at a special dinner held at the Union League Club in New York. The citation read "For notable industrial achievement in initiating mass production of copper from low-grade ores through the application of engineering principles." The present award recognizes the same accomplishment-the launching and guiding to the port of marvelous success of the Utah Copper Co., first of the so-called "Porphyries"-as did the award of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal by the A.I.M.E. in 1930, and before that the Award of the Gold Medal of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America in 1926. Following the custom a biography of the Medalist had been published in a small pamphlet as a supplement to the John Fritz Medal Book. T. A. Rickard was the au¬thor of the sketch of Mr. Jackling, an innovation being the placing of a copy of the booklet at the place of each of the diners. The committee in charge of the dinner consisted of two past-presidents: R. E. Tally, of the A.I.M.E., who was chairman; Bancroft Gherardi, of the A.I.E.E.; and Thaddeus Merriman, director of the A. S. C. E., the John Fritz Medal being a joint award of the four societies. Frederick M. Becket, President of the A.I.M.E., as chairman for the occasion, briefly stated the purpose of the dinner. He stressed his satisfaction that the award was symbolic of the cooperative professional activities of the four great national organizations of engineers. He introduced Francis Lee Stuart, past-president of the A.S.C.E. and now chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. Mr. Stuart outlined the history and purpose of the Medal established in 1902 in memory of John Fritz, of Bethlehem, Pa., one of the great pioneers of America's iron and steel industry, metallurgist, and president of the A.I.M.E. in 1894. Mr. Stuart called the roll of former John Fritz Medalists, three of whom, Ralph Modjeski, J. Waldo Smith, and Ambrose Swasey, were present to do honor to Mr. Jackling. He then introduced George Otis Smith, whose privilege it was to present the Medalist for 1933. Dr. Smith was the senior of the four A.I.M.E. representatives on the Board that last year selected Mr. Jackling for the honor. His speech follows in full.

The technical difficulties of cutting thin sections of coal for examination by transmitted light have hitherto restricted the investigation of the important subject of the microstructure of coal to the few possessed of the requisite skill and time. Apart from this, the method fails with anthracites and other coals rich in carbon, owing to the opacity of the material. Occasional use of the method of polishing a surface, with or without etching, has been made, but it was not until Winter' published an account of his results that attention was seriously directed to the method. In May, 1923, a specimen of dull anthracite came into my hands; I tried Winter's method on it and the presence of megaspores and other vegetable structures became clearly visible. A preliminary notice was published by me;2 but I soon abandoned the use of Schulze's solution, having found that a mixture of chromic and sulfuric acids gave far better results. In the meantime Turner and Randall, in America, had independently developed the method of flame etching, as applied to anthracite, with great success. I have spent a year studying the method of chromic etching, which gives excellent results with bituminous coals and camels, as well as with anthracite. For anthracites, I have used the chromic method and Turner's method of flame etching, whichever was the more convenient or as a check one on the other. The polishing is done, according to metallurgical practice, by the use of a polishing machine and successively finer emery paper, followed by polishing on cloth moistened with a suspension of levigated green oxide of chromium, and a final rubbing on "selvyt" (a cotton velvet polishing cloth) moistened with alcohol. The polished sample is examined by reflected light with a 2/3 and 1/6 in. objective. Bituminous coals usually show considerable structure, and even anthracites show it faintly in places. The sample is then etched by immersion in a boiling solution made by adding 10 c.c. of concentrated sulfuric acid to 30 C.C. of a saturated solution of chromic acid; enough water is then added to dissolve

Lucien Eaton, Ishpeming, Mich. (communication to the Secretary *):—I began to use water Leyner drills at the Cliffs Shaft mine at Ishpeming, Mich., over four years ago, and now have over 20 in use. The ore in this mine is hard specular hematite, and is mined by the room-and-pillar system, the rooms being driven as breast stopes. For many years only 3 1/4-in. piston drills were used in the mine, each machine ordinarily being able to drill from 15 to 25 ft. of holes in a shift. In the hardest ground, however, it was often, impossible to drill more than 2 or 3 ft. in a shift. When water Leyner drills were used the footage drilled was materially increased, especially in the hardest ground, but it was found that in very hard ground the breakage of machine parts, and especially of drill steel, was very high. At this time round steel with lugs forged on the shanks was used, and most of the breakage occurred at or near the lugs. Many experiments were made in an endeavor to overcome this breakage, and it was finally decided to do away with the lugs altogether, and use hexagonal steel. Accordingly I designed a chuck to use hexagonal steel without luge, a tappet being interposed between the hammer and the shank of the' drill steel. The design of this chuck of the proper size for the No. 18 Ingersoll-Leyner drill is shown in Fig. I. The different parts are also shown photographed in Fig. 2. A is the barrel of the chuck, which revolves inside the front head. It is made of machinery steel. B is the bushing which screws into the front end of the barrel A, and in which the drill steel fits loosely. This is turned down from a steel casting, the hexagonal hole being cast and then broached out to the proper size. It is case hardened inside. C is the tappet, which fits smoothly inside A just behind the bushing B. It is made of " N " temper Crescent tool steel and is carefully tempered. THE principal operating and producing properties covered by the Western Operations of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company are the U. S. and Lark mine in the Bingham district of Utah, the Bayard department in the Central mining district of New Mexico, the Midvale mill and smelter near Salt Lake City, the lead refinery of its subsidiary, U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., at East Chicago, Ind., and the coal operations of its subsidiary, United States Fuel Company, at Hiawatha, Utah. Operations of lesser importance at this time are conducted either on company account or by lessees in the Centennial, Bullion Beck, and Eagle and Blue Bell mines in the Tintic district of Utah, the Hidden Treasure and Ophir mines in the Ophir district of Utah, and the White Knob mine in Custer County, Idaho. The Richmond-Eureka Mining Company, in which the Company owns a controlling interest, has leased its properties near Eureka, Nev., to the Eureka Corporation Limited. The Gold-road property at Goldroad, Ariz., has been shut down since 1942, and due to high costs of labor and supplies, consideration is now being given to removal of all surface and underground improvements. The mine and mill im¬provements at the Sunnyside property in Colorado, recently purchased by the Sunbank Corporation, a subsidiary of the Company, are now being dismantled.

LOOKING back over the industrial and commercial progress of the United States during the last half century the outstanding influence has been the growth of the use of the fluid fuels, petroleum and natural gas. At the turn of the century these fuels supplied only 8 per cent of the energy requirements of the nation. Last year nearly 45 per cent of our heat and power supply were derived from these fuels. These figures are merely statistical reflections of the fundamental change in our national economy which has affected, in so many amazing ways, the life of this generation. The factors which have caused this change are still operative. The trend which has thus been established still continues and growth in the use of these fuels is, in all probability, still well below the peak, both for this country and for other parts of the world. Two great wars have not essentially changed this basic trend; if anything they have served to accelerate it. World War II did not alone increase our requirements for liquid fuels; it demonstrated the absolute essentially of petroleum resources to our national security. Petroleum is no longer just an important factor in our national standard of living; it is the most important single element in our national defence-

The high- and low-cycle fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-MBOO, in columnar-grained and single-crystal forms were determined at room temperature. It was found that the fatigue lives of these materials were greatly affected by the size of preexisting cracks in MC-type carbides contained in the micro structure. Most of the data falls on two curves given by: (zN)'/A€= K, where Nf is the number of cycles to failure, Af is the total strain range, and K is a function of carbide size. No difference was observed in the fatigue behavior of the columnar-grained and single-crystal materials for the same MC carbide size. Matrix slip and crack initiation occurred at precracked MC carbides and, to a lesser extent, at micropores. Fatigue crack propagation was mainly in the Stage I mode, i.e., on cry stallo graPhic slip planes. The Stage I fracture in these materials was unusual in that distinct features were observed on the fracture surfaces. In high-cycle fatigue, these features resembled those commonly observed on the cleavage fracture surfaces of bcc and hcp materials. Yet, in this study, the cracks propagated slowly in a cyclic manner. In low-cycle fatigue, the Stage I facets contained equiaxed dimples, similar to those observed on the tensile fracture surfaces of ductile materials. These observations indicate that both local normal and shear stresses are involved in these Stage I fractures. A model is proposed to explain these results based on the weakening of the cohesive energy of the active slip planes by reversed shear deformation and the fracture of the bonds across the weakened planes by the local normal stress. RECENT developments in casting technology have produced cast nickel-base superalloys in columnar -grained and single-crystal forms.1'2 The tensile and creep properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, cast in these forms have been shown to be superior to the corresponding properties of the conventionally cast polycrystalline material.lp2 This improvement in properties results, in part, from the elimination of grain boundaries in the single crystals and the alignment of the grain boundaries parallel to the stress axis in the columnar-grained castings. As part of a program to evaluate the fatigue properties of nickel-base superalloys cast in single-crystal and columnar-grained forms, a study has been made of the cyclic deformation and fracture of Mar-M2OO at room temperature. M. fiFl I .hininr Mpmher AIMF ic ^pninr Rocoarrh Accn^iata anH I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The composition range of Mar-Ma00 in weight percent is: 8 to 10 Cr, 9 to 11 Co, 11.5 to 13.5 W, 0.75 to 1.25 Cb, 1.75 to 2.25 Ti, 4.75 to 5.25 Al, 0.01 to 0.02 B, 0.03 to 0.08 Zr, 0.07 to 0.12 C, bal. Ni. All of the castings met the above specifications. The castings were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr which resulted in a 0.2 pct offset yield stress of 150,000 psi at room temperature. The microstructure of the material consisted of cuboidal, coherent particles of ordered, fcc Ni3(A1,Ti) (commonly designated y'), approximately 0.3 p on edge, distributed in an fcc y solid-solution matrix. MC carbides together with shrinkage and gas micropores were also distributed throughout the materials. The MC carbides and micropores were located preferentially in the interdendritic interstices, as well as in the grain boundaries in the columnar-grained castings. The (100) direction of all the single crystals and the common (100) axis of the grains in the columnar materials were aligned within about 5 deg of the specimen axis. Fatigue testing was carried out in the high-cycle (HCF) and low-cycle (LCF) fatigue regions, with the major difference being gross yielding of the specimen occurred during the first cycle in the LCF region. This division also corresponded with the more usual one in which the life of a specimen in LCF is less than lo4 cycles and that in HCF is greater than lo4 cycles. The designs of the high-cycle fatigue and low-cycle fatigue specimens are shown in Figs. l(a) and (c), respectively. The gage sections of both HCF and LCF specimens were electropolished prior to testing. The HCF specimens were tested in an MTS, closed-loop, hydraulic fatigue machine at 10 cps in air. The specimens were cycled between a tensile stress of 5000 psi and a maximum tensile stress which ranged from 35,000 to 125,000 psi, Fig. l(b). The LCF specimens were cycled under strain control from zero to a maximum tensile strain, Fig. l(d), in a Wiedemann-Baldwin testing machine. The experimental procedure has been described elsewhere.3'4 Both HCF and LCF tests were interrupted periodically in order to replicate the development of slip and cracking at the specimen surface. This was accomplished by placing plastic replicating tape around the gage section of the specimen while the specimen was in the mahine. The size of the MC carbides for all specimens was measured on a polished longitudinal section through the gage section after fatigue testing. The method of measurement consisted of carefully scanning the entire polished section in order to locate the largest MC carbides. An isothermal jacket microcalorimeter, supplemented by metallographic, microhardness, and X-ray measurements has been used to study the isothermal annealing of high purity copper after room temperature tensile deformation. The amount of stored energy released during annealing has been measured as a function of deformation in the range 10.8 to 39.5 pct elongation. The data have shown the major heat effect to be associated with recrystallization and have allowed an analysis of the recrystal-lization kinetics and the calculation of activation energies of recrystallization. WHEN a metal is deformed plastically, some of the energy expended is dissipated as heat during the working process, while the remainder is stored within the metal in the form of lattice distortions and imperfections. During subsequent heating of the metal, the distortions and imperfections can be largely annealed out and the associated stored energy released as heat. It is apparent that measurements of the evolution of stored energy during such annealing may produce important information concerning the nature of the annealing mechanisms and the imperfections involved. Some excellent studies of this type have been made in the past, notably those of Taylor and Quinney,' Suzuki,2 Bever and Ticknor,3 Borelius, Berglund, and Sjöberg,4 and Clarebrough et al.5,6 None of this work, however, employed isothermal techniques, with the exception of the Borelius studies' in which only the early annealing stages were investigated. Since isothermal measurements, as compared with heating or cooling curve, have the merits that 1—they reveal the kinetics of a process more clearly, 2—the results obtained are more easily applied to theory, and 3—most fundamental investigations of annealing using techniques other than calorimetry have been carried out isothermally, it was considered important to apply calorimetry to the study of the isothermal annealing of metals. Accordingly, an isothermal jacket calorimeter of the Borelius type,' supplemented by metallographic, hardness, and X-ray measurements, has been used to study the annealing of high purity copper after room temperature tensile deformation. Experimental The microcalorimeter has been described fully elsewhere." Briefly, the specimen to be studied is placed in a constant temperature environment of virtually infinite heat capacity achieved, as shown in the drawing of Fig. 1, by means of a vapor thermostat. A high thermal resistance is provided between the sample and the environment and a sensitive differential thermopile (see Figs. 2 and 3) arranged with half its junctions in contact with, and thus at the constant temperature of, the environment, and the other half in contact with the sample. A reaction in the sample develops a small difference in temperature, AT, across the thermopile, which is followed by a recorder-galvanometer set-up as a function of time, t, and is converted to reaction heat per unit time, P, by the use of the equation AT P=a?T + b AT dt The constants, a and b, in Eq. 1 are determined by a simple calibration, making use of the Peltier heat developed by a small current run through the junction of a thermocouple located in an axial hole in the specimen (Fig. 2). In its present form, the limit of sensitivity of the calorimeter is a heat flow of 0.003 cal per hr. The copper used was the spectroscopically pure metal supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. in the form of 3/8 in. diam continuously cast rod, reported to be 99.999+ pct Cu. A small amount of the copper was available at the start of this work and is referred to hereafter as lot A. A second batch, lot B, was obtained later, most of the results described subsequently being for this lot. As will be seen, there is some indication that lot A was somewhat purer than lot B, but it is not known whether this difference was present in the as-received metal or arose during subsequent handling. The two lots of copper were remelted and cast into two 1½ in. diam ingots in vacuo, using high purity graphite crucibles and molds. The ingots were upset several times to break up the large cast grains, and then rolled and swaged to rods 0.391 in. in diameter, using several intermediate anneals with about 40 pct reduction in area between anneals. The penultimate anneal was 2 hr at 350°C. X-ray examination showed no marked general preferred orientation in the resulting rods. The grain structure typical of the two rods is shown in the micrograph of Fig. 4." It was found to be virtually im- possible to get an unambiguous measure of the absolute grain size in the two annealed rods because of the profusion of annealing twins and the lack of regularity of the grain boundaries. However, counts of the number of boundaries intersected per unit length along a random line on a polished section, making a correction for the proportion of boundaries (about half) estimated to be twin boundaries, gave a figure of about 0.015 mm for the average grain diameter. The grain size of the rod from lot A was about 5 pct smaller than that from lot B. The rods were cut into 1 ft long bars and these deformed in tension at room temperature to various total elongations in the range 10.8 to 39.5 pct. A strain rate of 1 pct per min was used. The deformed bars were then stored in a dry ice chest until such time as samples were to be cut from them. Five bars deformed as indicated in Table I were used for the subsequent tests. DISCUSSION Howard Howie (Knoxville, Term.)—The authors are to be congratulated on the presentation of a paper containing so much valuable information on the pipeline transportation of phosphate, as there is very little literature on the subject. The writer is especially interested in the paper, as he conceived the arrangement of the Akin and Godwin plants and was in charge of the design work and the engineering incident to their construction. The Akin and other phosphate deposits in the Tennessee phosphate area lie on beds of limestone that are very irregular. The limestone beds, after the phosphate matrix has been removed, are similar in appearance to land severely eroded by the action of water and denuded of top soil. Depressions in the limestone, called cutters, are irregular in depth with vertical or overhanging walls, having the general appearance of cracks in dried clay. They change abruptly in direction, width, and depth, and vary on the Akin tract from 1 to 25 ft in depth and from 1 to 50 ft in width. Pinnacles of limestone commonly occur in the cutters which appear, when exposed, like small clifflike islands in a river. Limestone floats also occur. The phosphate matrix fills the cutters and covers the uncuttered areas, the thickness of the cover varying continually and sometimes rather abruptly. It occurs generally as stratifications of phosphate rock and clay of varying thickness. The phosphate rock in the matrix varies in hardness and in percents of silica, lime, iron oxides, and fluorine, and the clay varies in toughness. In some places the deposit consists of narrow strata of rock almost devoid of clay streaks. In other nearby locations the clay will predominate. When it is excavated, the phosphate rock breaks into thin irregular lumps, locally known as plate rock. Limestone lumps are also excavated with the matrix. Akin plate rock is generally much softer than that occurring in other deposits in the area. Because of the above described physical and chemical variations of the excavated material, the resultant slurry varies in size distribution, specific gravity, and percent of slimes. When the rock is soft or when there is an increase of clay, the slime fraction is greatly increased as it passes through pumps and pipelines, resulting in reduced pipe friction. It is obvious that the longer the pipeline the greater the reduction of coarse fractions into fines, causing a decrease in pipe friction that cannot be accurately evaluated. The matrix is mined with a dragline that drops it into a hopper with a grid composed of 9-in. parallel bar spacings located above the hammer mill. The matrix on, and passing through the grid, is subject to the action of powerful sprays which wash it down to the hammer mill, together with any limestone lumps that are not removed before passing through the grid. The hammer mill reduces the feed to lumps of plate rock and clay, most of which will pass through the 8-in. pump suction. The mixture discharges into a pool containing the pump suction pipe. Water from a hydraulic nozzle moves the mixture to the pump suction intake. The pump, driven by a variable speed motor, is the same size as the pumps mentioned on p. 279. Provision is made to remove any lumps that lodge in a bend in the suction pipe in a manner similar to that used in the Florida phosphate fields. The hammer mill and pump units are mounted on wide steel skids so that they can be moved as the mining operation progresses. The discharge from the pump flows through an abrasion-resistant spiral welded steel pipe 8 1/4 in. actual inside diam, 8 in. nominal diam, for a maximum distance of 2200 ft, which is the limiting pumping distance for one pump. This pipeline, referred to hereafter as pipeline A, discharges into a ball mill without balls, which in turn discharges into a rotary screen attached to it that separates the slurried matrix into 11/4-in. oversize and undersize fractions. The oversize is returned to the mill for further reduction; the undersize is pumped to a Dorrco washer and then flows into a hydroseparator 160 ft in diam. In spite of the size reduction in the hammer mill and the blunging and washing of the slurry in its passage through the pump, pipeline, mill, and washer, the discharge to the hydroseparator frequently contains mud balls almost perfectly spherical. Sometimes the discharge from the 16,000-ft pipeline at Godwin contains mud balls the size of bird shot and smaller. This pipeline will be referred to subsequently as line B. Liquid caustic is added to the slurry at the Akin plant before its passage through the hydro-separator, which decreases the size of particles in the overflow by dispersion. In passing through pumps 1, 2, and 3 and pipeline B, the slime fraction in the underflow is increased by abrasion and blunging and also by continuing dispersive action of the caustic. The matrix for use in the experimental tests referred to on p. 279 was obtained from three small surface openings on the Akin tract that were made previous to the purchase of the tract by the Authority. Matrix used in the 2 and 4-in. experimental pipeline tests was taken from the three openings and proportioned to obtain a sufficient quantity that would be fairly representative of the average in the Akin deposits. Prospecting samples of matrix had been obtained from drill holes which showed no small variation in physical and chemical properties. Some of the physical variation is evident from the size distribution of solids in samples taken during the tests covering line B flows so thoroughly made by the Authority under the direction of Mr. Burt, see Table V, p. 280. Hydraulic gradients for a pipe of 8-in. diam were derived from the 2 and 4-in. pipeline tests using the so-called representative matrix as above described, and plotted on the profile of pipeline B. Gradients of other materials in slurry form passing through pipelines that bore some similiarity to the Akin matrix slurry were also plotted. After a study had been made of the hydraulic gradients plotted on the profile and the varying slurry flow that would probably occur during actual operation, three pumps were ordered, referred to as No. 1, 2, and 3 on p. 279. No. 1 and 2 pumps were installed and the third kept in reserve should the operation of 1 and 2 pumps prove satisfactory, since installation of the third pump would require an attendant, as well as the laying of 5400 ft of pipe to supply it with seal-water from the Akin plant. Reference to Fig. 6 will show that the flow in B line goes upgrade in three locations. At the outlet at Godwin, the slurry flows between two 45" bends for an approximate distance of 18 ft to rise above the ground a sufficient height to discharge into a launder feeding the first classifier. This condition requires extra energy, which is taken care of by keeping the hydraulic gradient a sufficient distance above the high points.
