ALLOYS with nominal composition of 45-Fe 35-Ni 20-Cr, ASTM-B-163, known under the commercial names of Incoloy 800 and Sanicro 31 (Alloy 800), are often employed at elevated temperatures for extended periods. Therefore, knowledge of the aging behavior of these alloys is of considerable importance. Significant decreases in ductility and increases in yield strength have been observed in the 45-Fe 35-Ni 20-Cr alloys containing about 0.4 pct Ti and 0.4 pct A1 after long-term aging at 540" to 700"~."~ However, no direct evidence has been presented for precipitation phenomena that might result in such changes. Strengthening effects have been attributed to the effects of local or-dering.3 Since y' precipitation (Ni3A1, Ti) is known to occur in similar alloys which contain more titanium and aluminum,4-7 it was decided to explore the possibility that y' might precipitate in these alloys and might be responsible for the changes in mechanical properties on aging. This note reports some observations of two distict types of matrix precipitates made by means of transmission electron microscopy, in a 45-Fe 35-Ni 20-Cr alloy containing 0.31 pct Ti and 0.4 pct Al. The steel used in this investigation was obtained from the Sand-vik Steel Works; it is designated Sanicro-31 (Alloy 800). The chemical composition of the alloy is given in Table I. Aging of solution-treated material at 700" and 800°C for 130 and 100 hr, respectively, produced the matrix precipitates shown in Figs. l(a) and l(b). It is apparent from these micrographs that the precipitate particles occurred in the form of thin square plates parallel to the matrix cube planes. Extraction replication and selected-area electron diffraction showed that the precipitates were M23C6. Coherency strains, consistent with the semicoherent nature of small M23C6 precipitates,' were evident for certain imaging conditions. In addition to matrix precipitation, preferential precipitation of M23C6 on dislocations was common, as has been reported previously for austenitic stainless steels.'" Specimens aged for longer times (-300 hr) at 700°C exhibited a different type of coherent matrix precipitate in addition to the M23C6. An example is shown in Figs. 2(a) and 2(b). In addition to the few large M23C6 precipitates, small precipitates exhibiting strain contrastl0,ll are present. THE alloys formed by the addition of nickel to iron by convelltional metallurgical procedures show physical properties that differ widely from those of the individual metals. The effect of alloying on the mechanical properties is most pronounced in alloys containing between 15 and 25 per cent nickel. The tensile strength of an alloy containing, for example, 20 per cent nickel and 80 per cent iron (with 0.06 per cent carbon), in an annealed condition, is above 150,000 lb. per sq. in.? owing to a martensitic type of transformation, as compared with about 50,000 lb. per sq. in. for pure iron in the same condition. The object of this work was to determine whether the same beneficial alloying effect could be obtained in alloys of iron and nickel prepared by powder metallurgy technique. PROCEDURE Bars and pellets for tension and compression tests, respectively, were made. Two groups of specimens were prepared: (I) by cold-pressing the powders and sintering; (2) by cold-pressing the powders, sintering, repressing and resintering. Raw Materials Nickel powder supplied by Metals Disintegrating co., marked MD-151, was used. A typical analysis of this powder was as follows: sulphur, 0.040 per cent; copper, 0.18; iron, 0.23; manganese, 0.002; magnesium, 0.001 5 ; lead, 0.035; tin, 0.025 ; silicon, 0.08; chromium, 0.008. Electrolytic iron powder supplied by Plastic Metals Inc. was used. A representative chemical analysis for impurities other than gases, supplied by the vendor, gave the following results: carbon, 0.005 per cent; manganese, 0.002; silicon, 0.003; phosphorus, 0.001; sulphur, 0.004; nickel, 0.008. The fractions from these powders passing a 3 2 5-mesh sieve were reduced in hydrogen at 600°C. for one hour, to clean the surfaces of the particles. The reduced powders, slightly caked, were ground in a mortar and screened again through a 325- mesh sieve. Mixing The proper proportions of the powders were mixed overnight on rolls, in glass jars fitted with iron-wire baffles to break aggregates of particles that might form. Pressing All specimens were compacted on hydraulic presses. The pellets were compacted in a cylindrical die, ½ in. diameter. The ratio of thickness to the diameter of the pellets was maintained as nearly as possible at 0.9, as specifed for standard short compression pieces. The work of Klier and Lyman1 on the bainite reaction has led to the full description of this reaction for medium-carbon low-alloy steels. Certain experimental data reported by Klier and Lyman appear, however, to be improbable of obtaining in very high-carbon steels. The study herein reported consists of an analysis of the transformation characteristics of a 3 per cent chromium, I per cent carbon steel by means of X-ray and metallographic methods. From the results obtained it is concluded that the bainite reaction in this steel is more complicated than that reported by Klier and Lyman for the low-carbon low-alloy steels. Henever, the mechanism of bainite formation in this steel appears to be essentially the same as proposed for the low-carbon low-alloy steels with the modification that the first volumes to transform are carbon-rich rather than carbon-poor. Experimental Procedure The analysis of the steel studied was: Cr, 2.89; C, 1.02; Mn, 0.33; Si, o.35; S, 0.012; P, 0.020. The stock was received from the Carpenter Steel Co. in rolled bars. Specimen Preparation Specimens were austenitized at 1200°C. (2192°F.) for 25 min. in purified nitrogen. The resultant A.S.T.M. austenite grain size was 0-1. Isothermal transformation was allowed by quenching the specimens into liquid metal baths controlled to 5°C. at 540°C. (1004°F.) and above, and to 2°C. at 490°C. (914°f.) and below. Following the desired degree of transformation all specimens were water quenched. Metallographic Examination Specimens 1/4 in. round by 1/4 in. were used for nietallographic examination. Etch-ants used were Vilella's reagent (I gram picric acid, 10 ml. hydrochloric acid to make 100 ml. ethyl alcohol solution) and alkalinc sodium picratc (electrolytic). Vilella's reagent was effective in revealing all microconstitucnts, while the alkaline sodium picrate developed the carbon-rich structures or carbides only. X-ray Examination Two X-ray techniques were used—the Debye-Scherrer method and a back-reflection method. 'The small specimens necessary for the Debye-Scherrer method were austenitized and then allowed to transform, or were cut from the larger metallographic specimens. The metallographic specimens were used for the back-reflection X-ray analysis. When it was desirable to determine the structure of the carbide present, sliver specimens were electrolytically etched to develop a carbide coating, then were exposed in the cameras. This technique was frequently necessary to allow positive identification of the carbide.

FERRITES are sintered metallic oxides of the spinel structure type1 and belong to the class of soft ferromagnetic materials. Similar to a ceramic, they can be formed and fired to a dense body, exhibiting a high electrical volume resistivity ranging from 102to 107 ohm-cm as compared with 10-6 ohm-cm for some of the metallic magnetic materials. This high resistivity, with resulting low eddy current losses, finds special application at high frequencies. The dispersive susceptibility of ferrites at microwave frequencies has also led to many applications in this field. Ferrites are used in low frequency applications where high resistivity with high permeability is desirable. During the last few years ferrites exhibiting rectangular hysteresis loops have been developed for computer and magnetic memory systems. The general formula for ferrites is MeFe2O4 where Me is a divalent metal ion such as Ni, Zn, Mg, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Fe. Only two of these ferrites are nonferromagnetic, namely, those with Zn and Cd. Solid solutions can be formed between different ferrites, and it is of interest to note that solid solutions of a ferromagnetic ferrite with a nonferromagnetic ferrite yield much better magnetic materials than the basic ferrite body. In general, it can be said that the solid solution formation between ferrites has widened the field of ferrite synthesis and has led to methods of preparing materials with a large variety of magnetic properties. During the last two decades the synthesis of ferromagnetic oxides has been the object of extensive research, but commercial production has been started only within the last ten years. Along with more fundamental studies, there remains the never- ending task of developing ways to realize the optimum characteristics of materials in large-scale production. Ordinarily, to produce a ferrite material it is necessary for the constituent oxides to be mixed intimately, pressed, and then fired at temperatures above 1000°C. Ferrite Synthesis: Formation of a basic ferrite by solid state reaction from Fe2O3 and a monoxide such as NiO, under normal atmospheric conditions, is governed by a progressive diffusion of cations between adjacent particles of the constituents. Firing temperature, furnace atmosphere, and cooling can vary the magnetic properties, however. If, for example, a dioxide, a sesquioxide, or an oxide of the Me3O4 type is substituted for the monoxide, the reaction mechanism becomes more complex and extremely dependent on atmospheric conditions and firing cycles. An improved apparatus is described for the deterrni-nation of interfacial tension* by the pendant drop method in the pressure range from 15 to 15000 psi and the temperature range from 100º td 280°F. The chief characteristics of this apparatus are reliability and ease of operation. Temperature control was accomplished by means of an electrically heated jacket which could he completely removed while cleaning the apptrratus. The cell was designed so that the camera could he placed about I in, from the window without overheating the carnera lens. Separate "0" rings employed to seal each window and corresponding window backup plate gave very reliable window operation at 10,000 psi. An extra pistorr-cylinder combination was added so that a high compression ratio could he attained when gas was employed as one phase in the pendant drop cell. Other essential parts of the system were similar to an apparatus already described.' The interfacial tension for carbon dioxide and water varies from about 69 dynes/cm at 15 psi to about 19 dynes/cm at 1,250 psi for 100°F. For pressure.r between t,500 and 3,500 psi, the interfacial tension is between 32 and 24 dynes/cm at this temperature. The interfacial tension at 280°F varies from about 50 dynes/cm at 200 psi to about 17 dynes /cm at 10,000 psi. The maximum surface excess for carbon dioxide, assuming the surface excess of water to be zero, occurs at about 1,500 psi jor the 100°F isotherni and Itas a value of about -79 X 1014 mol/sq cm. At 160°F this maximum IS shifted to about 2,000 psi and has a value of about 10 X 1014 111ol/.sq cm. Other maxima, us well as several minima, are present at these and other temperatures. Judging from the data on the solubility of water in carbon dioxide at elevtrted pressures2,3, it appears that the principal maxinza natned are in regions of increasing solubility of the water in the carbon dioxide rich phase. INTRODUCTION AND APPARATUS A pendant drop interfacial tension apparatus which would accommodate an opaque liquid in a gas phase was constructed several ycars ago' for industrial purposes. This apparatus was used as a starting point for the present development. The objective of the present development was to enhance reliability and convenience of operation. Other articles'" have described pendant drop apparatus which could not accommodate a gaseous phase adjacent to the windows. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Various factors can affect the quality of BIII2 and BIII3 steel as produced in a bessemer plant; among them: vessel-charging practice, blowing practice, ingot-pouring practice, ingot delivery-time practice, pit-heating practices, and ingot-rolling practice. Evaluation of the influence of ingot delivery time on quality has been chosen as the subject for this paper because this time is completely within the control of the operator, and on this particular factor there is a tremendous amount of information in the dusty archives of the average steel plant. In order to know how much improvement can be made and when attention should be directed to other factors that influence quality, in the continual struggle for improvement, the effect of ingot delivery time must be accurately evaluated. Once this is done, the importance of other variables can be accurately obtained, thus eliminating the necessity of resorting to opinions that are of doubtful value at best. In the study described herein, extensive use was made of the statistical card system as a method of determining the effect of ingot delivery time as a quality factor in bessemer screw-stock grades by simple direct correlation. The value of this statistical method as a means of accurately determining the influence of various factors has been amply demonstrated by Work1 for the bessemer process and by Hand and Gould2 and Fetters and Chipman3 for the open-hearth process. The quality records of 300,000 tons of bessemer screw-stock billets were used in this study of the effect of ingot delivery time on the rejections for breaks, pipe, check and seams. The reduction in the number of rejections for poor quality reduces the costs and increases the productivity per man-hour. The operator today, more than ever before, must know how to keep costs down, how to do it most quickly and in the best way, and how to obtain the highest quality in line with the ever increasing demands of the customer. It is necessary for him to know the individual relations and interrelations between various factors affecting the quality of the manufactured product if he is to produce material that will meet competitively the cost, performance, and quality demands of the trade. In an investigation of various equiatomic alloys of transition elements, Dwightl did not find evidence for the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn. More recently waterstrat2 has reported the occurrence of this structure in the alloy his sample had been homogenized at 1150°C and subsequently reannealed at 725°C after crushing to powder. The purpose of this note is to confirm the existence of the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn and to report a lattice parameter. An equiatomic alloy was prepared by arc-melting under an argon atmosphere vanadium and electrolytic manganese having a purity of at least 99.9 pet. The composition was obtained by charging an excess of manganese and monitoring the weight loss until the stoichiometric composition was achieved; the assumption that the loss during melting was due to the vaporization of manganese appears to be a valid one.' The calculated composition of the sample prepared was 49.85 at. pct V and 50.15 at. pct Mn. Specimens taken from the fractured as-cast buttons were wrapped in molybdenum foil and encapsulated in quartz capsules under vacuum; there was no evidence of a reaction between the alloy and foil. The X-ray patterns were obtained using filtered copper or chromium radiation with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera having a diameter of 114.6 mm. The CrKa radiation is best suited for detecting the superlattice lines since it overcomes the slight difference in scattering powers of the components by making use of the anomalies in atomic scattering factor which occur when the frequency of the radiation is close to the characteristic absorption frequency of one of the elements.394 A specimen in the as-cast condition, as well as one which had been annealed for 1 week at 900°C and water-quenched, gave a diffraction pattern for the disordered bcc solid solution. However, when samples were homogenized at 900°C for 3 weeks followed by a subsequent anneal at 700°C for 6 to 7 weeks and then water-quenched or furnace-cooled, the (loo), (1111, and (210) Ka superlattice lines were observed in films taken with chromium radiation. An ao = 2.904 * 0.001 was determined by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation from a film taken with CuKa radiation. The author wishes to thank Mr. J. W. Downey and Mr. L. J. At the meeting of the Istitote in New York, in February, 1880," I described a process of determining sulphur iu metallic allphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The procem, as then described, is as follows: A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromiue is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a little more sodium hydrate. The pulverized mineral or coal is moistened with 25 c.e. of this solution autl heated, then hydrochloric acid is added cautiously to just acid reaction. [ ] S. H. Ash (Mining Industry Continues with Lower Fatal-Injury Rates, P. 257) was born in Roslyn, Wash. and attended Lehigh University and University of Washington. He received a B.S. and E.M. degree in mining engineering. Mr. Ash was supervising engineer in charge of work of Safety Div., Bureau of Mines, eastern Pennsylvania and the states of N. Y., Del., N. J. and the New England states. He was appointed chief engineer of Metal and Nonmetal Mining Section of the Mineral Production Security Div., Bureau of Mines, July 1942. At present he is chief engineer, Safety Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines. In 1978, Ozark Lead Co. made the decision to expand the capacity of its mine/mill complex by 33%. The objectives of the expansion were to increase mine production capacity by 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd), increase lead metal production by 21.8 kt/a (24,000 stpy), and to construct new facilities and modify existing equipment to accommodate increased production. This paper gives a brief explanation of the equipment installed and the overall production and metallurgical benefits realized from this expansion. The expansion was completed in the second half of 1980 with all equipment debugging and fine tuning completed by the first quarter of 1981. Concentrator modifications and improvements were basically restricted to four areas: materials handling, automation of the mill grinding circuit, increased flotation capacity, and concentrate dewatering.

In the paper by Mr. Fernom, on Red Charcoal, read at the first session of this meeting, it was suggested that this fuel might be used in the blast furnace with greater economy than ordinary or black charcoal. In the discussion which followed the paper, it was stated that the charcoal furnaces of the Lake Superior District have used imperfectly burned charcoal with success, and that these furnaces have given the best results in fuel economy on record. On consulting some of our well-known metallurgical authorities the writer finds that the question of the use of red charcoal, or other imperfectly burned charcoal, or charred wood, is not at all new. A detailed compressive stress-strain analysis and transmission electron microscopy investigation has been made of the deformation behavior occurring in a 50 at. pct Ni-Ti (hypoeutectoid) alloy and a 54.5 at. pct Ni-Ti (hypereutectoid) alloy. In the case of the hypoeutectoid alloy, three stages of work hardening are observed. Stage I occurs at a very low stress and is associated with plastic deformation via martensite formation. Stage 11 is characterized by very rapid work hardening and is due to difficulties in causing further deformation in the fine martensite aggregate produced in Stage I. Stage III which occurs at very high stress levels is characterized by smaller work hardening rates and is due to the plastic deformation arising from alternate reconversions of the original martensites to martensites of varying orientation. Rapid quenching of the hypereutectoid alloy leads to very high yield strengths and is related to a fine precipitate dispersion that such treatment brings about. The present investigation represents the final phase of a three-part study directed toward an understanding of the solid-state transformations in near equi-atomic Ni-Ti alloys as well as the deformation mechanisms associated with these alloys. In the first part,"2 to be henceforth referred to as I, it was found that alternate simple shears on {112} planes and in (111) directions convert the parent B2 structure in the equiatomic NiTi alloy into two distinct close-packed monoclinic martensites. All of the marten-sites were of this type, whether they were formed by cooling or by plastic deformation, whether induced to form in bulk samples or in thin foils, or whether examined in the electron microscope at room temperature or below. On the other hand, in the second part of this investigation,3 to be reffered to as 11, it was shown that upon slow cooling to about 640°C. alloys in the neighborhood of NiTi which possess the B2 structure transform eutectoidally into their equilibrium phases Ti2Ni and TiNi3. However, preceding the formation of these equilibrium phases a series of metastable intermediate phases are formed. This paper will set as its goal the elucidation of the remarkable deformation behavior exhibited by NiTi. In particular, Buehler and Wiley4 have found equiatomic NiTi to be surprisingly soft, while Buehler et al.5 have shown this alloy to possess a memory effect: i.e., upon bending at room temperature it will revert to its original shape when heated to above about 50°C. In I it was shown that NiTi was soft in the sense that the yield stress was low; nevertheless, the alloy work-hardened at an extremely rapid rate to very high stress levels. On the other hand, the hypereutectoid alloys with somewhat higher nickel, say 54.5 at. pct (60 wt pct) have enormously increased yield strengths compared to those of the equiatomic alloys. In order to determine the atomistic processes giving rise to the above behavior, it was decided to examine samples that were wafered from bulk specimens deformed in compression to various strains using the techniques of transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE All of the alloys used in the present investigation contained either 50 at. pct Ni (55.06 wt pct) or 54.5 at. pct Ni (60 wt pct) and were arc-melted in the form of a finger using the same techniques described in I and II. The finger was capsulated in a stainless-steel jacket and swaged at 850°C into rods. Compression specimens 0.300 in, long and 0.200 in. in diam were machined from these rods. In order to completely re-crystallize the samples and remove residual stresses, all of them were capsulated in evacuated quartz, annealed for 1/2 at 1050°C. and then furnace-cooled. Compression tests were carried out in an Instron tensile testing machine covering a range of temperatures from —196° to 200°C using procedures described previously.6'7 In all cases crosshead speed was 0.02 in. per min. Wafers 0.015 in. thick were spark-cut from the cylindrical samples at 45 deg to the compression axes after they had been deformed to the desired strain. These specimens were then spark-planed to about 0.005 in. and then electrochemically thinned for examination by transmission electron microscopy as described in I.

The production of the North Central Texas area comes entirely from the Pennsylvanian section with the exception of one pool in Cooke County and one in Young County where oil has been, produced from the weathered surfaces of Pre-Pennsylvanian peaks overlapped by oil-bearing strata of Pennsylvanian age. In the southern part of the area the Strawn and Bend groups furnish the production, the Strawn sands being the predominating horizons at depths from 1500 to 3000 feet. In the northern part of the area including North Young, Archer, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Clay counties, the Cisco group has produced consistently for nearly 30 years from sands ranging in depth from 700 to 2500 ft. To our knowledge there are 13 separate producing sands in t,he Cisco group ranging from 200 to 1800 ft. in Wichita County. During the past three years, deeper drilling has opened three new producing horizons. A Canyon sand in Central Archer County has produced from 400 to 800 bbl. per well at a depth of 2200 ft.; and in the same pool, owned jointly by the Deep Oil Development Co. and Lindsay Drilling Co., a Strawn sand was found at 3600 ft. which produced 75 bbl. per day. In Southern Wichita County the Bend group has been found productive. A very oolitic sandy lime series from 3675 to 3942 ft. has produced in three wells drilled to date. During the past year the district has been producing under an extreme proration which accounts for the small production figures for 1932, as well as the few drilling activities at the end of the year. Table 1 presents the available drilling and production data compiled by the North Texas Oil and Gas Association.
