"The metallurgical performance of the column flotation process is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a model-based automatic control strategy using froth depth and bias measurements obtained from virtual sensors developed at Laval University. Preliminary pilot plant results on two-phase (water– air) and three-phase system (water – minerals – air) will be presented and eventual industrial implementation of such a strategy as well as the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns have been widely studied and used in mineral processing for about twenty years. Although a great deal of work has been accomplished to understand the influence of different variables such as froth depth (H), bubble surface area flux (Sb) and bias (Jb) on the metallurgical performance, the measurement of some of these variables is still difficult to be performed – except at the laboratory level – because in most cases, no commercial device yet exists.As a result of this, it is almost impossible to achieve neither efficient control nor optimization of the process at the industrial level, even in open-loop operation. This paper aims at presenting a simple control strategy of froth depth and bias. Description of the sensors used to achieved measurements, preliminary pilot plant results for froth depth control, eventual industrial applications and possibilities for process optimization are also treated."

This publication reports on the design, fabrication and test of an Improved methane monitor system for compliance to 30CFR75.313. The system will Initiate automatic shutdown of mining machinery when excessive concentrations of methane are encountered. The prime consideration: In the design were small size, Improved accuracy and reliability, fast response and a transient resistant power supply capable of reliable operation from any mine power source. The power supply contains an internal battery that provides operating power to the detection system prior to mining machine start-up or after machine shutdown. This report documents the development program from conception through in-mine testing.

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. The Westerly Storage Tunnel is a 25-foot diameter segmentally lined storage tunnel that is a major component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's Project Clean Lake that is designed to capture 39 million gallons of untreated CSO overflows from entering Lake Erie. During the final stages of the project completion, a large-scale rock fallout incident occurred during the final lining installation operations at the down-stream end of the tunnel that extended beyond the designed primary support system. This paper outlines the level of coordination and collaboration between the Owner, Designer and Contractor to remediate the situation safely, quickly and effectively.

Three-dimensional time-lapse velocity tomograms were generated to image stress redistribution around a longwall panel to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to ground failure. Mining-induced microseismic events provided passive sources for the three-dimensional velocity tomography. Surface-mounted geophones monitored microseismic activity for 18 days. Most similar studies have utilized active sources including longwall shearers, controlled explosions, and hammer blows. These active sources generally require a person to initiate and measure the location and time of the source, and are not conducive to continuous monitoring. This method utilizes mining induced microseismic events as passive sources and lends itself well to continuous monitoring. Two event location methods were compared in order to move toward quantification of tomographic results in terms of ground conditions. Additionally, LAMODEL was utilized to determine the expected stress distribution around the longwall panel and compare these images to the velocity tomograms. Eighteen tomograms were generated, one per day, and high velocity regions in the set of tomograms generated from the initial location algorithm correlated with abutment stress redistribution predicted by numerical modeling. This research is significant as it has the potential to improve safety in underground mines and is the only example of long term passive velocity tomography implementation for the purpose of inferring stress redistribution around an area of active mining. Though still immature, this technology has the potential to allow mine personnel to image areas of active mining on a regular basis and detect areas with anomalous velocity distributions indicating potential safety hazards.

A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

The University of Maryland (UMD) has conducted a series of small-scale tests using explosive charges buried in saturated sand. Twelve different combinations of depth of burial of the charge and height of the target plate above the soil were tested. The target plates did not deform plastically. High-speed video was used to track the motion of the plate. The video data are analyzed to determine the position and velocity of the plate as a function of time. The results of this analysis are compared with computations performed at NRL using the BUB2D computer code. This code treats the saturated sand as an incompressible visco-plastic fluid which yields according to a Drucker-Prager (frictional-cohesive) yield surface. Comparisons of simulations with experiments are presented. In the cases examined so far, the velocity grows very quickly to a peak and then slows, first with a deceleration greater than one “g,” which then transitions to an approximately one “g” deceleration. An analysis of air drag on the plates has shown that its effect is negligible in the time span of interest. In all cases in which the BUB2D code can be applied, the computations compare favorably with the results of the data analysis. This suggests that the code and model used in the computation are properly capturing the physics of the interaction between the soil and a non-deforming plate.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being constructed to provide permanent storage of radioactive TRU waste materials emanating from military weapons production. These wastes are contaminated with radioactive elements heavier than uranium, thus the name trans-(or beyond) uranic (Uranium wastes). The WIPP site, which is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, was chosen thru a selection process after the National Academy of Sciences recommended salt deposits as a promising host strata for the storage of radioactive wastes. Throughout the United States numerous DOE facilities have produced and stored defense-generated TRU wastes. Once WIPP becomes operational in the fall of 1989, all sites may ship directly to this repository. A companion project has developed special shipping containers (TRUPACT) for safe transport of materials to WIPP. The WIPP facility is currently composed of surface buildings, three shafts, and underground storage and experimental rooms and tunnels. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) has nearly completed the construction of the fourth shaft, an intake shaft, to provide additional ventilation to the underground workings. PLANNED SHAFT EXCAVATION METHOD Full-face raise boring ( upreaming ) was the allowable method selected by Frontier-Kemper Constructors for the excavation of the shaft. After arrival of an oil-field type rotary drill rig in December 1987, a 9 inch diameter pilot hole was drilled from the surface to the mine level, a depth of approximately 2145 feet.

The material that composes the roof in coal mines differs in strength according to variations in its physical nature and characteristics. Some material such as limestone and massive sandstone, (free from slits) and carbonaceous shale or bone, will often remain in place in narrow work without the use of timber or other means of support, but in wide places the use of supports becomes a real necessity. Roof material composed of shale, fire clay or small laminations of sandstone, or shale or sandstone interspersed with laminations of thin coal, presents conditions that call for timber support in both narrow and wide work. However, in narrow work such unstable roof material may be taken down until the strata assume an arch that is self-supporting for overlying firm strata such as a roof coal, a touch weather-resisting, shale, sandstone, or limestone. The proper support of the roof in roadways used for haulage or travel adds to the economy of operation by preventing delays in transportation and increases the safety of those who travel these roadways.

"Thirteen Canadian sulphide ore mines were surveyed for corrosion control. The mines visited were a small, yet representative, proportion of this segment of the Canadian mining and metallurgical industry. Information on metallic corrosion and methods used to control it in underground workings and mills was gathered (a) by discussing corrosion problems with company personnel, (b) by examining equipment and structures during under-ground and mill tours, (c) by photographing corrosion sites, and (d) by collecting and analyzing mine water samples.The corrosion survey, which is summarized in the re-port, leads to the following general conclusions. Mine environments are corrosive, particularly when the mine w1a-ter is acidic. Because of a lack of good corrosion control measures, excessive deterioration of equipment due to corrosion occurs in mines. Mill environments are also corrosive, but in some cases good preventive measures are being taken to effectively control corrosion losses.Ways to reduce corrosion losses in sulphide ore mines and mills are discussed. The main areas for more corrosion research and development are selection of materials of construction, protective coatings, cathodic protection, inhibitors, equipment design, and mining and milling practices."

Texas is a major producer of industrial mineral resources required by the state’s ever-growing population that now exceeds 28 million. Texas typically ranks in the top three states for the value of non-fuel mineral production with a total value of $5.2 billion in 2017, accounting for 6.9% of the total US mineral value. Almost 90% of current Texas industrial mineral value comes from the production of cement, crushed stone, industrial sand, and construction sand and gravel. Construction material consumption is focused in the 25 metropolitan areas of the state with populations of > 100,000 residents. Industrial mineral consumption is dominated by the four most populous regions of the state—Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio-New Braunfels, and Austin-Round Rock—with an aggregate population of more than 18 million. More than 11,000 employees work in Texas mining and processing operations. Texas produces more crushed stone than any other state from more than 200 quarries; a similar number of operations produce sand and gravel. Specialty industrial sand production for use as proppants in hydraulic fracturing for enhanced petroleum production serves as an excellent example of how developments in one industry sector can markedly affect another industry; the production of industrial sand in Texas has markedly increased over the past decade, reaching $1.3 billion in 2014. With Texas’ population projected to reach 50 million by 2050, continuing in-state development and production of industrial minerals will be required to supply its residential, commercial, and industrial users. Favorable geology and economic factors provide opportunities for identification and development of new industrial mineral production sites.

The design of separation circuits can be a complex, labor-intensive and costly process. While the engineer?s experience along with extensive data sets and simulation are crucial tools for determining the final solution, a more fundamental approach is suitable to compare preliminary options and reduce the number of potential alternatives. In light of this need, the authors have developed the Circuit Analysis Reduction Tool (CART?). This software package relies on the fundamental principles of linear circuit analysis; however, the solution methodology has been streamlined to automatically incorporate stream splitting and unique separation performance for each unit. The resulting tool allows preliminary analysis of circuit designs without the need of detailed feed characterization. In addition to the basic analytical approach, this paper supports the veracity of the methodology with several simulated examples for various separation models.

Background Population growth and increasingly stringent regulatory controls on water quality across North America have resulted in municipal governments investing heavily in infrastructure to control what are known as Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These are events which occur when combined sewers exceed their conveyance capacity during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is one such municipality; with a population of over450,000 within city limits and a sewer system servicing 1.2 million including adjacent jurisdictions, the City of Atlanta has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) encompassing approximately 15% of its total 3,540 km (2,200 miles) of sewers. Atlanta’s CSO discharges to local watercourses began to draw fire from environmental groups in the1980s. As a result, in the early 1990s, the City constructed a series of CSO control facilities which provided screening and chlorination at seven CSO discharge points across the CSS watershed. Unfortunately, these facilities were not capable of handling all of the overflows generated due to heavy storm events; frequently, untreated water was bypassed around the treatment facilities. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed that water quality standards were being violated by these discharges, and a suit was brought against the City to force a higher standard of compliance. As a result, the City entered into a federal Consent Decree which would bring CSOs into compliance with federal standards by 2007. A critical component of this plan was the design and construction of the West Area CSO Tunnels and Pumping Station. In February 2003 the City’s Department of Watershed Management retained the services of Jordan Jones & Goulding/Hatch Mott MacDonald/Delon Hampton Associates (JDH Joint Venture) to design and provide construction management ser-vices for the project, which was designed to capture combined sewage from three of the City’s existing CSO facilities on the northern end of the CSS watershed. The design consisted of two connected tunnels which would convey the wastewater originating from the North Avenue, Clear Creek, and Tanyard Creek CSO facilities to a submersible wet well pumping station located at the R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). Since the majority of the effluent stream consisted of storm water, the City elected to design and construct a separate treatment plant. This plant was designed under a separate contract, and is currently under construction.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

The solution mining of evaporites has a history of approximately 5,000 years. The insitu leaching of metalliferous ore will have many of the same characteristic problems which have confronted industry for years in the production of evaporite minerals. Basically we will be converting the less soluble forms of valuable metals into their more soluble salts and producing these in much the same manner as, for example, sodium chloride. There are a number of problems which we are faced with that are more complex and complicated and, therefore, will require a higher degree of sophistication than previously employed. One of our most important undertakings will be the clearcut definition of the problems involved. While a great deal of expertise can be drawn from the solution mining of evaporites and the oil industry, problems peculiar to the hydrometallurgical field will need to be solved. One of these is the introduction of permeability into an impermeable rock so as to expose the sought after values of metals which by volume are infinitesimal when compared with sodium chloride, potash or other type water soluble mineralization. After establishing this permeability which will be miniscule when compared to a solution cavity, there will be the maintenance of this permeability. In general, salt deposits are of a somewhat uniform chemical composition and thus their chemistry was relatively simple. Each metalliferous ore body is somewhat unique in its chemistry and will need to be treated accordingly.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

This contribution describes rock mechanics features of the Davis Cavern at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, U.S.A. The mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. In 2003 and again in 2008, the mine site was recommended for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in cooperation with the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory under the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). The original Davis Cavern was excavated about 9.1x16.8x9.7 m high (30x55x32 ft high) in 1965 (Mitchell 2009) at a depth of 1,478 m (4850 ft). The purpose of the cavern was to house apparatus for detecting solar neutrinos. The experiment ultimately proved successful and earned R. Davis a share of the 2002 Nobel Prize in physics. Recently, a new experiment (LUX=Large Underground Xenon detector for dark matter particles and WIMP's=weakly interacting massive particles) was proposed for the Davis Cavern that required an increase in height of 2.4 m (8 ft). For many years, the Homestake gold mine was the deepest operating mine in North America. Development extended to the 8000 Level (2,438 m). The mine closed in 2003. Pumps were shut off and the water level rose to the 4350 Level, about 150 m (500 ft) above the Davis Cavern. Some six years later after selection for DUSEL proposal development by the National Science Foundation (NSF), access to the 4850 Level and the Davis Cavern was regained. Pumping has lowered the water level to well below the cavern floor. Figure 1 shows the layout and location of the Davis Cavern (Cavity). Detector tank, supporting steel, and so forth were subsequently removed. The cavern was re-supported and new access was developed. By August, 2010, 13,000 ft3 had been removed during enlargement and renovation of the Davis Cavern. Figure 2 shows the detector tank under construction in 1965.

As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.
