"Lake Shore Gold is engaged in commercial gold production at both the Timmins West and Bell Creek mines, located in Timmins, Ontario. Run of mine ore is processed at the Bell Creek mill which consists of a conventional gold mill flow sheet involving crushing, grinding, gravity concentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) for gold recovery. Since 2009, the operating capacity of the mill has been upgraded from 2000 tpd tonnes per day (tpd) to over 3,000 tpd. The most recent expansion involved the installation of a low aspect ratio SAG mill to replace the secondary crusher. Without operational data on the low aspect mill, combined with a site team that was new to SAG milling, there were many challenges in achieving the target throughput from the circuit. Through the implementation of AwaRE advanced controllers, running in closed loop with PRC fragmentation cameras as well as embedded PARC modules within the Allen Bradley PLC, the site was able to rapidly develop a best operating practise and has been successful in creating a stable and consistent operational environment. This endeavor was split into two phases: the expansion of the back-end (Phase 1) and the front-end (Phase 2) of the mill. Phase 1 of the expansion was completed at the end of 2012 and involved enhancements and capacity addition to the leaching and adsorption circuits, which increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tpd. Phase 2 of the expansion commenced at the end of July 2013 and involved the expansion of the crushing and grinding circuits. The expanded front-end of the mill now has a capacity of 5,500 tpd, and processes ore from both Bell Creek and Timmins West mines. The updated flow-sheet, as shown in Figure 1, illustrates the replacement of the two-stage crushing and ball milling circuit with a single stage crusher and a low aspect ratio SAG mill."

THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, produced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. 1). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OF THE ST. Large scale surface coal mining will be required to fill future energy demand in the United States. In realization of this long-term commitment to coal resources, the U.S. Energy Re-search and Development Administration sponsored a study to determine the costs and problems of large-scale surface coal mining. As a result of this study a series of computer models were developed that can be used by government and industry to: 1) facilitate mine design and equipment selection, 2) provide detailed analyses of mining and processing costs. Two types of models were developed: detailed simulation models, which provide detailed information on mining systems and equipment to assist in mine design and equipment selection1 and broad models, which provide a first-order evaluation of deposits and new ventures for an entire mining complex. The complete model series permits examination of surface coal mining under a variety of terrain conditions. Six different mining methods were analyzed and documented during the overall project: 1) Area stripping with draglines, 2) Area stripping with draglines, extended bench, 3) Contour stripping with draglines, 4) Area stripping with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 5) Mountain top removal with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 6) Multiple dipping seam mining with shovels (loaders) and trucks. Each major operation in the coal mining pro-cess is represented in these models so that the best methods and equipment may be selected and 50 that the impact of such selection will be reflected in estimates of capital investment, operating costs, and coal price. Individual models allow the user to separately analyze overburden removal, overburden drilling and blasting, coal drilling and blasting, coal loading and hauling, coal preparation and handling, land reclamation, and premining, facilities, and administrative expenses. Because it is impossible to cover all the models in this paper, only the detailed simulation models representative of the technique "area stripping with draglines," are described. The Fort Union Strippable Coal Resource Region, one of eight test cases, is used as an example to describe the models.

Waste water reuse from municipal and industrial effluents is becoming increasingly important in many areas around the world. Water scarcity, local regulation and environmental impact are driving many industries like coal and copper mines to reuse the large volume of waste water they produce. For example, the Chinese coal industry generated about 4.2 billion tons of mine waste water in 2005 of which only approximately 30 per cent was reused. Coal energy represents 76.6 per cent of the total energy generated in China in 2007 and most of the coal-fired power plants are located in north-west of China, which is a water stressed area.The selection of mine waste water treatment process is challenging as the effluents typically contains high levels of organic compounds and salinity and their composition can vary significantly. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies for mine waste water treatment and reuse.In this paper, an overview of the design and performance of ultrafiltration and RO membranes applied for reuse of mine waste water are discussed. A study was carried out in two effluents treatment plants treating copper and coal mine waste water, which are located in Chile and China respectively. The following topics will be discussed to demonstrate the performance of an integrated membrane system in mine waste water reuse: The main challenges from copper mine waste water treatment: high level of chemical oxygen demand (COD); high level of total suspended solids (TSS); high salinity; high concentration of silica, sulfate, iron and other contaminants; and fluctuation of raw water quality. The main challenges from coal mine waste water treatment: high level of total dissolved solids, and waste water quality fluctuation. Design parameters for waste water treatment systems: Selection of pretreatment for dual-membrane system in the copper mine: Clarifier with coagulation and flocculation to remove high TSS; Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to remove non-settling solids; Media filtration to handle fine solids and particulate organics; Activated Carbon filters (ACF) to remove dissolved organics, colour and odours. Selection of UF and RO membranes and specific design of their recovery, flux, chemical dosage and cleaning regimes. Finally, the performance of UF and RO, including the main fouling factors and efficient cleaning procedures, will be presented and compared to the design parameters to demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the selected integrated membrane systems in each case.

Su aplicación comprende la fase de investigación (año 89), modificaciones (año 2002) durante la etapa de escalamiento industrial y la optimización (año 2004) de estos equipos en la empresa, los cuales no han requerido de una gran inversión. Asimismo, los beneficios de operar con la celda SK-80 y SK-240 directamente a la descarga de los molinos primarios, permite optimizar el control metalúrgico. En este sentido, la idea de separar el plomo tan pronto lo permita el sistema, es la forma correcta de optimizar la metalurgia de este en la Compañía minera Raura.

"The impact of high-grade data on resource estimation has been a longstanding topic of interest in the mining industry. Concerns related to possible over-estimation of resources in such cases have led many investigators to develop possible solutions to limit the influence of highgrade data. It is interesting to note that the risk associated with including high-grade data in estimation appears to be one of the most broadly appreciated concepts understood by the general public, and not only professionals in the resource modelling sector. Many consider grade capping or cutting as the primary approach to dealing with high-grade data; however, other methods and potentially better solutions have been proposed for different stages throughout the resource modelling workflow.This paper reviews the various methods that geomodellers have used to mitigate the impact of high-grade data on resource estimation. In particular, the methods are organized into three categories depending on the stage of the estimation workflow when they may be invoked: (1) domain determination; (2) grade capping; and (3) estimation methods and implementation. It will be emphasized in this paper that any treatment of high-grade data should not lead to undue lowering of the estimated grades, and that limiting the influence of high grades by grade capping should be considered as a last resort. A much better approach is related to domain design or invoking a proper estimation methodology. An example data-set from a gold deposit in Ontario, Canada is used to illustrate the impact of controlling high-grade data in each phase of a study. We note that the case study is by no means comprehensive; it is used to illustrate the place of each method and the manner in which it is possible to mitigate the impact of high-grade data at various stages in resource estimation."

"The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

Risk ranking of projects is one of the importance parts of the complicated risk management procedure. Recognizing the riskiest criteria enable the managers to plan for risk reduction. The first stage for meeting this aim is defining the risky parameters and then working to establish order between them. There are variety methods for risk ranking. The ELECTRE method is one of the best among the multi criteria decision making methods. In this paper with implementing the fuzzy ELECTRE, The risky criteria in the Tehran Subway project are being ranked. The result of this research presents damage and accident of machineries as well as the lack of labor and equipment safety is located in the first order. Collapse factors and local prices are in second rank. Also wrong design, pollution, urban facilities damageable are in third to fifth respectively. Delay and ? are located in the last positions.

The title of “the world’s biggest volume-produced hydraulic breaker,” that was held for more than a decade by the Atlas HB 7,000, changed hands with the launch of Atlas Copco’s HB 10,000 at bauma 2007. A service weight of 10 t (11 st) and up to 50 percent higher productivity represent major steps toward a new market segment: the use of hydraulic breakers as cost-efficient production machines for primary breaking and as a true alternative to drilling and blasting. The HB 10,000 has all the technical features developed by Atlas Copco for its hydraulic breakers and includes: StartSelect — the breaker’s start-up and shut-down behavior can be adapted to the conditions. AutoControl that ensures an optimized balance of impact energy and impact frequency to maximize percussive performance. Auto-Control also reduces blank firing force and controls energy recovery. PowerAdapt — if oil pressure is too high, the breaker shuts down automatically. This prevents downtime and is particularly useful when breakers are used on different carriers. DustProtector II — a combination of multiple strippers prevents abrasive rock dust and foreign bodies from penetrating the lower breaker section. El desarrollo de diferentes diseños en los revestimientos del molino y parrillas de descarga, el incremento del porcentaje de bolas, las mejoras en la voladura, la reducción del set de chancadora primaria y las pequeñas ampliaciones en la planta incremetaron la capacidad de diseño de planta desde 5 Mtpa a 6 Mtpa. El incremento de tonelaje no afectó significativamente al producto de molienda y recuperación, pero traslada el cuello de botella a los espesadores donde ahora se los esfuerzos de incremento de capacidad.

SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

The problem of balanced design in a belt conveyor has been under constant study. Increased use of this method of transport in recent years has stimulated investigations. Conveyor belt, power transmission and other machinery should be adequate to perform the required service. All components of the belt conveyor should work as an efficient unit moving its load continuously between terminals. As part of a long term research project on belt conveyors, Hewitt-Robins established in 1954 a 2-year grant at Pennsylvania State University. Under terms of the grant, certain fundamental phenomena were to be studied. This work evolved a new concept in belt conveyor power determination based on the principle of belt tension. The Penn State contract furnished the foundation for later more detailed studies. From these most recent investigations, more specific factors were defined. In the final analysis, all of the data collected has been worthwhile in belt conveyor design. Units now operate over long distances at speeds of over 800 fpm. Long high lifts are commonplace. Where vertical or inclined shafts were the rule, belt conveyors receive first consideration. Although belt conveyors have moved forward rapidly, the future will see a tremendous gain in their use. The ideal test belt conveyor would be several thousand feet in length and have a maximum tension of at least 70,000 lb., Also, this conveyor should be horizontai and have a variable feed rate of more than one material. Data from such a field belt conveyor combined with laboratory information would permit accurate analysis. Since this type of conveyor was not available, many field locations were visited: An alternate would have been to erect a closed circuit system in the laboratory. Either method had limitations and the first was selected as having the best possibilities. Manufacturers of conveyor belting and machinery basically have been using the same horsepower formula. As more information became available from field installations, factors in the basic formula were modified. Practically all conveyors are designed today by adding together the horsepowers required to move the empty belt, move the load horizontally, and elevate the load. "AbstractHigh strain dynamic pile tests (HSDPT) on driven piles have been carried out on a routine basis in Sweden for more than 30 years. The Swedish Commission on Pile research established, in the early 1980s, safety factors based on the percentage of piles tested. The safety factors could then be reduced, creating economic incentives for the contractor to carry out testing.Energy formulas adopted by our neighbour countries, Norway and Denmark, were not accepted in Sweden as a reliable method since the dynamic testing method was considered to be a more scientific and reliable method. It has become almost the only in-situ method used to verify geotechnical bearing capacity on driven piles.The typical Swedish geology of soft soils overlaying very hard strata makes it possible to verify high design loads, typically 20 kN per cm2 of pile cross sectional area for steel piles and 1,5 kN per cm2 for concrete piles.Conventionally a certain percentage of the piles have been tested in Sweden. The EC7, on the other hand states a number of piles to be tested, regardless of the total number of piles. The Swedish NA (National Annex) states a maximum distance between tested piles, which results in better distribution of the test piles over the foundation.For shaft-bearing piles in soft clays, dynamic pile tests have to be correlated by static load tests.Historical backgroundOn a research basis stress-wave measurements have been carried out for a long time in Sweden. One example is a project in the city of Gothenburg, conducted by Fellenius and Pejrud (1964). Strain gauges were glued on the reinforcement bars in 60 m long, precast concrete piles at 3 m and 25 m above the pile tip respectively. Evaluation was done with different methods such as dynamic formulas,stress-wave measurements and in addition compared with static load tests.In the 1975 Building Code in Sweden, driving criteria for concrete piles based on stress-wave theory were introduced, as summarized in Table 1. The driving criteria are intended for 3 and 4 tonne gravity hammers. For hydraulic rigs, which have free-falling hammers, the drop height indicated should be reduced to 80 % of the values in the table. The criteria were considered to include a safety factor of 3,0. For 330 - 450 kN pile load, pile with a standard a cross sectional area of 235 mm x 235 mm was used. For 600 kN load, the standard cross sectional area was 275 mm x 275 mm."

The applicability of the Q-system [Barton et al. 1974] to Australian underground metal mines is discussed with reference to two common design issues: ground support for horizontal mine development, and assessing the stability of bored raises. Installed ground support in mine development is com-pared to empirical estimates using the Q-system and associated support capacity calculations. Data are graphically presented from 59 specially selected sites at 15 contributing mines. The actual performance of large-diameter raise-bored shafts is also compared to empirical stability assessments using a modified version of Q (Qr, after McCracken and Stacey [1989]). Lower-bound Qr values are plotted against raise diameter for 47 selected sites at 23 mines in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The influence on Q and Qr of some geotechnical aspects of the Australian landscape, the dynamic nature of mines (compared to civil construction), and occupational health and safety regulations are discussed. Stability and support assessments that are based just on Q or Qr are not always conclusive. It is often necessary to consider other rock mass parameters, the regulatory environment, and risk issues. These results are interim; further data collection and analysis are required with regard to comparing actual performance versus empirical assessments.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential health risk associated with exposure of dozer operators to whole-body vibration. Measurements were made on 31 dozers used in different surface mines in Turkey. Predictions of adverse health effects of vibration were based on the standards BS 6841:1987, ISO 2631–1:1997, ISO 2631–5:2004, and the EU Vibration Directive:2002. Operators experienced high and comparable levels of vibration acceleration and dose during all dozer tasks: pushing the material (DOZE), moving forward (FORWARD), moving backward (REVERSE), and ripping (RIP). Specifically, DOZE, FORWARD, REVERSE, and RIP showed high potential of adverse health effects in terms of vibration dose according to the worst-case axis and vector sum criteria and a moderate adverse health effect for acceleration according to the worst-case axis criterion. Operators of large dozers were exposed to lower levels of vibration. However, no statistically significant relationship between vibration exposure levels and the propelling mechanism and the service time of dozers, operator experience, operator age, and ground type was found.

Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

An excavation, within which a tunnel is sunk as a part of the Centraal Station underground station (platform section) of the Noord/Zuidlijn ('North/South Line'), is to be created beneath the Amsterdam Centraal ('Amsterdam Central') station. The section beneath Amsterdam Centraal Station is characterised by the application of a particular technology in the form of, inter alia, the so-called 'sandwich wall'. This is a composite wall consisting of two rows of Tubex piles with a body of jetgrout columns in-between. This wall acts both as an excavation support wall and also provides vertical bearing. The installation of the wall, including both Tubex piles and jetgrout columns, within these specific conditions (limited height, sensitive historical building), within the design requirements set in terms of construction tolerance and water and soil retention, may be regarded as being a pioneering achievement. The environmental constraints are that the trains should continue to run, the inconvenience to passengers should be kept to a minimum and the historic station should not suffer any damage. Because of the complexity of the working conditions, the project is being overseen by a steering group of experts in the specified construction processes. In order to manage the project risks, jet grouting trials were initially carried out, in order to highlight and control execution problems; the practicability of the design is then tested. Work commenced on the sandwich wall in 2003, when the wooden piles were extracted at the locations where the sandwich wall was to be constructed; in 2004, the steel Tubex piles for the southern wall sections were installed. From May 2005, the construction of the sandwich wall got under way; in addition to the described process supervision, an extensive measuring programme was established, so that the process could be adjusted as necessary and the quality of the finished product determined. This applied to both individual columns and for the end product, the sandwich wall. The measurement results were processed for each column, interpreted and the effect on the work still to be conducted was assessed for each future column. Preventative and corrective measures were, if necessary, taken in order to control or counteract the measured defect. In addition to the process-oriented and qualitative measurements, various independent measurement systems at the station building served as a further control in order to prevent damage to the building.
