Economy needs mineral raw materials in almost each sector of modern life. They can only be provided by mining activities. An increasing share of the total mining production will be by underground mining. The mineral deposits will be found at gradually greater depths, including all problems associated with them. It involves an increase in overburden pressure with subsequent rock stability problems and risks of structural collapse. There is a need for new and safe technologies for almost all parts of a modern mine. The mining industry faces a number of challenges which require technical solutions that encompass the entire network and include the economic, social and environmental issues. The industry needs a new image based on pioneering solutions and a modern structure that can exploit minerals at greater depths and promote both high productivity and safe working conditions. Funding has been secured from the European Commission for the I²Mine project. Work started in November, 2011. This initiative is designed to focus on the technological challenges that the mining industry is currently facing including the exploitation of ever deeper deposits and the aspiration for an invisible, safe, zero impact mine. The project comprises a consortium of 27 organisations from 10 European countries. I²Mine marks the start of a series of development activities aimed at realising the concept of an invisible, zero impact, deep mine. The extractive sector, still seen as being old fashioned and environmentally unfriendly, will show that mineral extraction and processing can be done in a highly innovative and sustainable manner with low impact underground and zero impact above ground. The concept of I²Mine is to develop innovative methods, technologies, machines and equipment necessary for the efficient exploitation of minerals and disposal of waste, all of which will be carried out underground. This will dramatically reduce the volume of surface transportation of both minerals and waste, minimising above ground installations and reducing the environmental impact. New eco-efficient technologies will be applied in order to make the entire mining process more efficient and environmentally sound. The concept is for an integrated mine, with the majority of the installations underground, and only the final product will be transported above ground to be shipped to the customer. Production waste will be treated and stored underground and gaseous emissions will be managed underground as far as practical. I²Mine will also focus on ideas and concepts that increase energy efficiency and decrease waste. The core of the project will be to develop breakthrough technologies for autonomous, highly selective, continuous mineral extraction processes and machinery based on new sensor technologies, face front separation as well as innovative concepts for mass flow management and transportation integrating state of the art technologies. The concept of an invisible, zero impact mine requires a refined process underground that selectively extracts the mineral thereby reducing waste. For this reason, improved extraction machines and near to face processing methods, including backfill procedures, need to be developed. These developments include rock mechanics and ground control solutions, incorporating health, safety and environmental issues.

"IntroductionThe mining industry has made slow but steady progress toward the automation of mineral processing plants over the last 35 years. The stimulus to automate is associated with important economic and hidden benefits, so that today, the latest in instrumentation and technology is being employed.This chapter assesses the status of instrumentation justified economically, defines levels of control and certain fundamentals of feedback control loops, describes typical sensors employed in concentrator circuits, summarizes control strategies employed therein, and briefly highlights trends in integrated plant control.Current Status of AutomationAs early as 1948, the mining industry began to show interest in automation, probably because of its close association with the petroleum industry. By 1958, some regulatory control had been achieved in various sections of a concentrator, particularly in crushing circuits. Successes were attributed primarily to the reliability of sensors employed in the corresponding control scheme. By 1961, computers had appeared on the scene, initially, for data logging purposes.From 1958 to 1965, very few new control strategies had been implemented. Guidelines in vogue at this time appeared to be:- Install proven automation, unless a good instrumentation department exists at the concentrator.- Do not bite off too much instrumentation at one time.- Do not purchase on price alone; instrumentation must function in the concentrator environment.- Do not purchase automatic control equipment to be fashionable.Such guidelines were employed1 because of a lack of: (a) quantitative process knowledge, (b) reliable primary sensors, (c) initiative to try something new, (d) trained personnel, and (e) understanding that older concentrators could justify automation in many situations."

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. MANY of the gases and vapors used in anesthesia form explosive mixtures with oxygen or air. Sources of ignition for these mixtures always have existed in operating and anesthetizing areas. When ether was first introduced, candles,5 gaslights, and coal stoves caused fires and mild explosions of the vapor-air mixtures. Today the chief causes of ignition are electrical. Fires and explosions are still much too frequent; and, because many of the mixtures are rich in oxygen, the explosions sometimes are very violent. Obvious sources of ignition, such as electric-power sparks and arcs in open motors, switches, and receptacles, as well as exposed incandescent wires and hot plates, usually are recognized by hospital personnel and corrected. A source of ignition that is not so obvious to many is static electricity. Until quite recently the presence of this hazard in a large majority of anesthetizing areas was not even suspected. However, numerous explosions-many of them fatal to patients-have been attributed, with good reason, to sparks from static electricity.

This report on the Venezuelan coal industry is the seventh in a series of studies on coal exporting countries requested by the House Appropriations Committee, The committee asked that the basic differences in mining costs for U.S, and foreign mines be identified, especially those costs incurred in complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.1 Basic costs in extracting raw coal are analyzed in this report for surface operations, This report also provides a limited analysis of the relative market competitiveness of selected Venezuelan and U,S. steam coal mines in three electric utility markets: New England and the east coast of Florida in the United States, and western Europe. Although some Venezuelan coal has coking characteristics, all coal-producing regions of Venezuela sell coal in steam markets.

"Since late 1980s the research group led by late Professor Andre Robert Laplante at McGill University undertook fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson Concentrator (KC) and developed a sustainable method to correctly estimate gravity recoverable gold (GRG). In the early time a concept of ‘free gold’ was used, it was defined as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, its practical use had declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson Concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. Through more than 10 years’ improvement and optimization, this technique had become a standard method to evaluate GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. Until 2006, about 200 GRG tests had been carried out at McGill University for the ores from all over the world. Recently, a modified version of GRG test (short test) with the advantages of reduced processing time and lower cost had been developed for the mundane needs of gold industry.INTRODUCTIONGold gravity recovery has evolved significantly over the past twenty-five years, mainly because of the advent of the Knelson Concentrator (Knelson 1988, 1990, 1992, Laplante 2000). Now, a series of Knelson Concentrators for different applications are manufactured and used in gold industry all over the world (Knelson Concentrators 2004).In 1980s the Knelson Concentrator gained acceptance from mining industry as an effective device for the recovery of gold from grinding circuit. Knelson Concentrator became the obvious choice because of its design features: a relatively long processing time without concentrate discharge (compared to some other centrifuges, such as Falcon Concentrator and Chinese Yunxi Centrifuge at that time), large throughput capacity, treating a wide size range of material, yielding a high grade concentrate with small mass that could easily be smelted. As more and more Knelson Concentrators were accepted in gold industry, mineral processing engineers faced with challenges: what are the separation mechanisms of the Knelson Concentrator? How much gold can be extracted for an ore if a Knelson Concentrator is installed? For answering these questions, a laboratory scale Knelson Concentrator was created."

THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125kt/d (137,700 stpd). The most recent expansion included the installation of a semiautogenous mill (SAG) designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation, including conventional and column cells, and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modern distributed control system. PTFI’s operations are located in the Ertsberg mining district of Irian Jaya’s Jayawijaya Mountains, the eastern-most province of the republic of Indonesia on the Island of New Guinea. PTFI, the operator, is owned by Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the government of Indonesia (9.4%) and private Indonesian investors (9.3%).

This paper deals with the significance of Explosive Energy in the optimization of blast design parameters, and the benefits emerging out of it. It is based on the original work done by the author in developing and successfully implementing a site-specific software package on ‘Blast Design Optimization’ at Kudremukh Iron Ore Mine in India with a production level of 22.5 million tonnes of crude ore and off-take of Explosives of approximately 5500 tonnes per annum. The software package has yielded tangible results in effecting reduction in Explosive Consumption, substantial savings in the Cost of Explosive, besides Environmental Improvements by way of attenuation of Blast Induced Ground Vibrations as well as Air-Blasts. By carrying out regular ‘Regression Analysis’, and determination of the Rock Constants, it has been possible to further develop software packages as well as prediction curves for prediction of Peak Particle Velocity, Safe Charge of Explosive, Air-Blasts etc. A model has also been developed for the prediction of ‘Fly Rock’ although at KIOCL, fly rock does not pose any problem.

"The start-up of new plants, extending from the commissioning of equipment to the production ramp-up, is a critical period where the processing circuit operation must be done in a structured and well controlled way to enable the gradual, safe and rapid achievement of production targets. The magnitude of the many risks associated with this pivotal period is accentuated in the actual context of low commodity prices. However, the implementation of a method that analyzes risks associated with a start-up, their probability of occurrence and their impacts leads to the identification of a series of preventive actions that can be applied in order to reduce potential negative impacts.Soutex has been involved in numerous start-ups over the last few years and has developed a structured methodology to assess this crucial period, maximize the pre-start-up preparation, ensure a smoother and safer ramp-up period and minimize the time needed before reaching commercial production.This paper describes a method to identify preventive actions to apply in order to reduce risks related to a plant start-up. Then, the various steps of the method are demonstrated using the industrial case study of the Canadian Malartic gold plant situated in Abitibi, Québec. The specific preventive actions, during start-up, the organisational measures and the ramp-up plan are detailed as they were effectively achieved. Finally, the post start-up actions are presented as well as some key results illustrating the achievement of their prior defined objectives.IntroductionPlanning a new plant or new circuit start-up in a mine installation involves various risks, both at the economical and safety levels. Unprepared staff and equipment can lead to safety issues that could threaten plant staff as well as the environment. Moreover, a poorly prepared start-up could often lead to equipment break-down, production stoppages and delays, leading to important economic impacts, delaying commercial production and therefore affecting directly the profitability of mining projects.It is common in the industry to have structured commissioning procedures for major equipment taken separately. Technical personnel from the equipment manufacturing company would usually come on site in order to perform the pre-operation verification, dry runs and the first hours of operations. This kind of assistance is usually focussed on one piece of equipment and neglects the interactions between the various equipment of the production chain. The commissioning phase is usually maintenance oriented and the information given by the manufacturing representative seldomly flows through the operation staff (in the case of this paper, the denomination “staff” refers to both managing and operating employees). The global process is usually not taken into consideration by the technical personnel sent on-site by the manufacturer during the commissioning phase. Many papers can be found describing the commissioning of new equipment focussing on the technology (Côté and Adante (2009), Wells et al (2007)) but without dealing with its integration process in the complete production chain."

High intensity stirred milling using the IsaMill has been the enabling technology for many projects by transforming the economics of fine grinding and simplifying circuit design. IsaMill grinding technology was originally developed for large-scale grinding to P80 sizings of 7 ¦m. The IsaMill is a high throughput, high efficiency mill that produces sharp product size distributions in open circuit configuration. The ability to grind in an inert environment, using a wide variety of media types, can give further metallurgical and economic benefits. The high energy intensity results in a small footprint that enhances the ability to distribute grinding power throughout the circuit, applying grinding energy to the minerals that need it. Recent scale up developments in IsaMill technology have enabled the benefits to be extended to large-scale conventional grind sizes, until now the domain of ball and tower mills. This paper will examine the crossover of IsaMill technology from ultrafine applications into the more conventional grinding area (P80 20 - 150 ¦m). Scale-up developments in IsaMill technology that have enabled this are reviewed. The upcoming commissioning of a 3.0 MW M10,000 IsaMill, the most powerful to date, grinding to P80 55 ¦m at PPL in South Africa will be discussed, as will the recent commissioning of a 2.6 MW M10,000 IsaMill at Kumtor. Recent testwork at McArthur River, where an IsaMill is being considered as an addition to the primary grinding circuit to replace the current tower mill will be reviewed. The potential combination of HPGR and IsaMill to transform concentrator grinding economics will also be discussed. Large-scale IsaMill technology has the ability to transform circuit design and energy efficiency for both coarse and fine grinding.

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safety studies revealed that investigators use a wide range of statistical techniques for the analysis of mine injury data. Researchers have addressed the various issues of accident causation and prevention through analysis of mine injury data collected from mines. These studies are generally based on historical accident/injury data without considering the injured person/population at risk. In this paper, a public health approach, based on scientific methods of epidemiology, is presented to address mine safety issues. Epidemiology is the scientific study of disease and injury patterns among populations in time and space. Originally, epidemiology was concerned with epidemics of communicable diseases. Then it was extended to non-communicable diseases. Safety researchers found that epidemiologic methods are the best tools for injury research, because the occurrences of injury and the occurrences of disease are quite similar. As a result, some researchers started applying this concept to injury research. This paper presents some of the techniques used in epidemiologic studies and illustrates the application of a case-control study design to evaluate the role of some risk factors associated with injuries in underground coal mines. In this study, the injured persons were identified and, simultaneously, interviews were conducted to find the significant risk factors responsible for occupational injuries in coal mines.

Agapito Associates (AAI) provides consulting services in geo-engineering, mining engineering and related disciplines. Founded in 1978, the firm operates out of offices in Grand Junction, CO, Golden, CO and Lombard, IL. Members of the staff include mining, civil and geological engineers, physicists, geologists, numerical analysts, computer specialists, instrumentation specialists, plus administration and technical support personnel. AAI has provided consulting and engineering services to mining companies producing base metals, precious metals, coal, potash, trona, limestone, oil shale and salt, and to defense and nuclear-waste disposal industries. AAI also provides services for measuring in situ horizontal stresses using an advanced biaxial overcore stress downhole measurement system developed by Sigra of Australia. Since 1978, AAI has measured in situ stress in copper, oil shale, molybdenum, trona, limestone and coal mines, and in tunnels and concrete structures. Since 1994, the staff has completed 527 overcore stress determinations. AAI has the equipment and personnel for overcoring, sample coring and instrumentation installation in limited access, surface and underground mines. Portable Longyear CP-65 drills, borehole deformation gauges and strain indicators are used for difficult-access overcoring and are permissible for use in gassy mines.

Safety first is no longer merely a motto ; in some industries and in some parts of the mining industry it is an accomplished fact . In connection with the National Safety Competition of 1928 in which 284 mines and quarries participated , 42 plants were operated without a single lost - time accident . The winning company in the bituminous group had an accident severity rate of 0.053 per thousand man hours of exposure . Excellent safety records of various kinds are becoming more and more frequent , and the indication is that in reality safety is first in many mines and qquuaarrrriieess .. The safety achievements in the Stewart mine of W. J. Rainey , Inc. , are unusual even among mines winning awards in the competition .

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber plant was recently completed at an existing facility, in order to treat the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns. Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong operational readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.INTRODUCTIONCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Quebec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.The CDS ProcessA general overview of the CDS process is presented in Figure 1 below. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary byproductof the process.Fresh hydrated lime and CDS residue is captured by the dust collection system and is re-circulated to the CDS via a fluidised transport system. Clean off-gas passes through the dust-collection system and is then sent to the atmosphere by a single exhaust fan.The CDS residue purged from the system is combined with the dust collected from the kiln offgas system and this mixture is wetted in the already exiting agglomeration system, to minimize dust generation during handling, and then sent to disposal."

Raw water supply in the central Rocky Mountains often relies on trans-basin conveyance. Many of these older diversions incorporate high-elevation, miles-long tunnels driven over a century ago in hard rock. Tunnels were excavated using conventional drill-and-blast mining and weak ground was supported by timber sets and other various means. Over time, timbers rot and fail, rock quality deteriorates, and the timbers are gradually replaced by more timber, steel patches and braces, formed concrete, rock bolts, split sets, shotcrete, and other means which are commonly applied over existing support, thereby reducing tunnel cross sections, obscuring previous support systems, and rarely addressing the failing rock itself, leading to further deterioration of both the rock and the existing support. Traditional investigation techniques to assess compromised areas are often unfeasible due to access, depth, rubble and voids behind weight-bearing existing supports, confined space, poor invert conditions, poor ventilation, and flowing water. This presentation will discuss design procedures for assessing obscured ground conditions, assigning support classes which accommodate for unknowns, and implementing contractual means to address inevitable surprises or quantity overruns. Case studies include raw water supply tunnels in the Rocky Mountain region constructed between early to mid-20th century.

The object of this investigation is to determine the field for the use of detachable bits in metal mines of the United States by correlating the data developed through the experience of mines using these bits. Most of the metal-mining districts in the Middle Western and Eastern States already have been visited. The purpose of the present circular is to define the problem and to discuss the factors that must be considered in order to determine, under different operating conditions, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of bit. Some of the data obtained to date are presented to emphasize points made in the discussion. It is hoped that, as the study progresses, a great many data on drilling will become available. It is evident that since in some cases these data will be confidential they cannot, therefore, be published except as they may be included in average figures covering several different mines. Some data already secured are of this nature, Although considerable information on drilling operations has been gathered at different mines, there were only a few instances in which there were available complete data on all the factors entering into the total cost of drilling with detachable bits and with conventional bits on regular drill steel.

IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living.
