"This paper deals with the results of the variation of thermal conductivity of rocks with pressure on a laboratory scale. For this purpose, the authors have added a pressure-supplying unit to the apparatus developed by Mousset-Jones and McPherson (1986), Önder (1995), Ashworth and Ashworth (1979), and Innaurato and Occella (1989) in order to measure the thermal conductivity under pressure. The values obtained from the tests performed by this new apparatus have been stated using a regression analysis and the related graphs have been drawn. Results have shown that the thermal conductivity of rock varies digressively with pressure. The same results have been obtained in different rocks types. IntroductionOne of the most important tasks of mining engineers is that of establishing, maintaining and sustaining safe and healthy working conditions in underground mines.Heat can have a profound effect on safe and healthy working conditions and is one of the main problems in deep underground mines. In this regard, the temperature of the air passing through the mine openings increases steadily and causes a decrease in the efficiency of workers due to the unwanted physical effects to human bodies in the working area. At the same time, the hot and humid environment resulting from heat and temperature rise causes some important occupational diseases and increases the accident risks in the related openings."

In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? MAGNESIUM metal, with a specific gravity of 1.73, is two-thirds the weight of aluminium and one-quarter that of steel. It is the lightest metal which is stable in the atmosphere. Before the war it had begun, though somewhat slowly, to take a place among the established metals. In 1939, magnesium production on this continent amounted to some 3,000 tons per annum and was confined to one company. At that time, Germany produced perhaps 20,000 tons. The advent of war, however, increased the demand to fantastic heights and introduced production problems of unprecedented magnitude. By the end of 1943, North American production is expected to reach 300,000 tons per annum (1), an increase of one hundredfold. Such a rate of expansion has not been witnessed previously in the history of metallurgy. It has given the metallurgist an opportunity to try new production methods and to learn in a short time what might otherwise have taken many years. The metallurgy of magnesium is still in its formative years and at this time widely different production methods are in operation side by side. This paper will discuss these methods in so far as information is available for publication at this time. A general description of the new Canadian industry will be included.

"INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

"Placer Dome (CLA) operates the 90-year-old Dome Mine, in South Porcupine, Ontario.The milling operation currently processes 5 million tons of ore per year, from both the underground and Open pit mining operations, producing 320 000 ounces. The milling process is conventional crushing and grinding, with gold recovery by gravity followed by leach/CIP.Cyanide tailings are impounded in a large (325 ha) tailings area where cyanide is allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent is discharged seasonally during the summer and early fall months to maintain site water balance. Pond water is reclaimed for sole use within the mill process.In 1995, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO S02/Air cyanide destruction module was added.During this time period, the treated effluent often failed toxicity tests required by the Ontario MISA Regulation, even though effluent chemical parameters were below permit limits. Two studies identified ammonia as the toxicant to Rainbow Trout, and free copper as the toxicant to Daphnia magna.From a literature study, and contacts within the Ontario Mining Association, the use of chelation as a final end of pipe treatment step to render any remaining free copper and metal fractions biologically unavailable was considered. Lab and plant scale tests followed.During the 1999 ETP operating season, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic-acid) commenced. To date discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests.The paper will review the effluent treatment history, current effluent treatment plant operation, and detail the use of EDTA for successful toxicity control.History of Tailings Deposition, and Effluent Treatment From 1910 to 1995Over it’s ninety years of operation, the Dome Mine milling circuit has changed from the original 1910 stamp-mill mercury plant, to today’s modem 14 000 ton per day automated gravity and Carbon in Pulp based plant.By the 19803, a modern mill was operating on mainly underground mined ore. The plant was operating at some 3 800 tons per day, using fairly conventional processing routes.The number 4 tailings dam was being used for tailing’s deposition.All effluent treatment was by natural degradation of cyanide. Discharge was from decanting type structures during the summer months only, maximizing the use of natural degradation no tailings effluent was recycled for Mill use."

"Drill and blast represent the most important, and sometimes the costliest processes in the mine. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum and Temeng, 2015). The use of available information to improve the drill and blast processes can be the difference between a wasteful process and one that is optimized for costs, safety and desired fragmentation. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets that include a variety of different systems. This information can be used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the drill and blast process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated and sustainable workflows for handling the information.In some cases, the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Wixom, Watson, 2007). The author’s initial implementation plan for the drill and blast solution included using data stored at the sites on local servers. However, we learned early in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed and was available in the EDW ready for use. This saved time, reduced risk and added value to the system.The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, especially highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing drill blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This article targets users that want to better manage their drill and blast data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information.This case study will discuss the process of implementing a drill-and-blast workflow at multiple sites within Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available from the EDW."

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

"Dating back to 1934, Con Mine is located directly south to the city of Yellowknife in the NWT, Canada. With mill operations ceasing in 2004, a challenging surface remediation situation resulted which required the treatment of close to 40,000 m3 of Arsenic impacted material.Through much of the period of 1941 to 1970, Con Mine treated their refractory arsenopyrite ore through the use of an Edwards Heath roaster. With mounting environmental pressure and through Canadian governmental studies during 1950 to 1970, attention was directed to the Arsenic Trioxide material being collected by two Doyle scrubbers on the Con’s roaster stack. In 1970, the roaster was decommissioned leaving the resulting Arsenic material in two containment areas on surface.As a result of Con Mine entering into remediation in 2004, the Con’s autoclave, commissioned in 1992, was dedicated to the immobilization of high impacted Arsenic material through the combination of excess Iron under high temperature and oxygen overpressure. Examined, herein, is the history and chemistry of the Con Mine autoclave as well as the two stages of chemistry for the Water Treatment Plant used to remove arsenic, heavy metals and WAD cyanide from tailings water. Simplified capping plans of the tailing containment areas and a high arsenic impacted area are also presented.INTRODUCTION TO CON MINECon Mine (Con) is situated just south of the City of Yellowknife in the North West Territories (NWT) Canada and is bounded locally by Yellowknife Bay (North Extension of Great Slave Lake) to the east and Kam Lake to the west (Figure 6). The discovery of gold at Con was made in 1934 and mineral rights were acquired by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Limited (Cominco) and Falconbridge soon thereafter. Nerco Minerals Limited (Nerco) took control in 1986 and in 1993, was subsequently sold to, Miramar Mining Corporation which in turn was purchased by friendly takeover involving Newmont Mining in November 2007 as a result of acquiring the Miramar’s Hope Bay project. Con’s underground operations ceased in September 2003 and have since entered into the remediation of the site. The current surface lease holdings are about 340 Hectares (Table 1) which sits on top of the Archean-aged Yellowknife Greenstone Belt."

Foundation and excavation problems associated with lock construction projects vary widely. Each lock requires a different foundation to respond to a unique geologic setting. The range of heights and founding materials are illustrated thru description of selected structures encountered in the United States. Examples range from 113-ft high John Day Lock on the Columbia River founded on basalt rock to the 17-ft high Lock No. 5 on the Arkansas River floated on a clay foundation. A description of the basic elements of design and construction is presented. Several case histories involving lock design and construction are assessed to aid in recognition of potential problem areas on forthcoming construction. In the past decade there have been many improvements in construction materials and techniques. The application of these new approaches to lock construction is discussed.

"THE mineral industry is constantly undergoing changes and facing challenges, and today we are in the midst of another serious one -namely, manpower requirement at every level in the mines, shops and plants. In the not too distant past we had a situation where labour was plentiful, although the equipment, by present-day standards, was quite inadequate, and that's easily understandable when you look back at the primitive methods by which our Western mines were first developed and operated, and then improved by the inventiveness and ingenuity of man.I'd like to show you a few slides from drawings made by Buck O'-Donnell which illustrate some of yesterday's methods of mining. Some of you probably had first-hand experience with some of these so you know they were tedious, time-consuming and involved a lot of heavy labour.Taking the Anaconda Company operations at Butte as an example, we can see what has happened in just the past ten years. In August of 1956, the Butte mines had 5,516 day's-pay employees and 976 salaried employees, for a total payroll of 6,492. In August of this year, there were 3,645 day's-pay employees and 605 on the salaried roll, for a total of 4,250. The number of contract miners had gone from 1,347 in 1956 to 606 in 1966 and that of other underground miners from 2,893 ten years ago to 1,149 this year. Along with these changes, however, another change of special significance has taken place, and that is in the number of skilled craftsmen, surface engineers and so on required for our operations. In 1966, we had 1,890 of these people, 600 more than in 1956 and nearly three times as many as just twenty years ago."

During the past decade, the miner-al industries have been faced with an increasing shortage of engineers. The point has now been reached where the shortage may be termed critical. This shortage may be attributed directly to declining enrollment in the mineral science programs offered by the universities on this continent. Although the reasons for declining enrollment are undoubtedly many, two major hypotheses may be postulated. The first is that high-school graduates are either unaware of the mineral industries and the opportunities in them or that they are aware of them but have somehow obtained a false image of their true nature. The second is that they are aware of the true nature of these industries and the opportunities they offer but find them exceedingly unattractive. The problem of dwindling enrollments has, in recent years, been subjected to a concerted attack by the industries and professions concerned. However, their efforts to date have been based essentially on the first hypothesis. Sufficient results are now available to suggest that either the methods of attack are inappropriate

Research into the safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa highlighted that future practices will have to consider pertinent risks associated with this least safe of all underground coal mining methods conducted in South Africa. To this end, a computer-based program called A-PEP (Analysis for Pillar Extraction Potential) was developed to assess three aspects of this mining practice, viz. risks associated with the physical attributes, operational risk attributes and economic attributes. This intelligent tool can thus be used when planning to conduct underground pillar extraction to ensure that all pertinent risk elements and legislative requirements are considered to conduct this mining method safely before a submission is made to the Department of Minerals and Energy. This is one of a series of reports describing investigations made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and other agencies concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the Missouri River Basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data considered to be confidential. The field investigations for this report were made during the fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all of the known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits within Judith Basin County were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years; most of the old underground mine workings now are inaccessible or only partly accessible. Consequently, much of the information on many of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available U. S. Government and State publications and from owners and local residents.

"The design, construction and commissioning of Kiena Gold Mines Limited's new mill was completed in 15 months ending in September 1984. Rated at 1250 tonnes per day the mill incorporates the latest innovative technology such as semi-autogenous grinding, carbon in pulp, pressure stripping and induction furnace refining. The mill is housed in a pre-engineered building with the leach tanks and thickeners located outdoors in spite of the intense winter cold. 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND HISTORYThe operations or Kiena Gold Mines Limited are located in Dubw1sson Township, approximately 10 Km west of Val d'Or, in the Abitibi region northwestern Quebec. Comprised of 59 mining claims covering 1214 hectares, a large portion of the mining property is overlain by the waters of Lac de Montigny. Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Barney Parker discovered gold in a shear zone on an island in Lac de Montigny that now bears his name. The first shaft the Parker Shaft, was sunk in 1936 from the island to a depth of 136 meters but owing to the known veins being of limited extent and the onset of the Second World War operations were terminated in 1940. In the early l960 1 s exploration drilling indicated an orebody of 4,500.000 tonnes at 6.3 grams of gold per tonne. A causeway was built to link the island to the mainland in 1963 and a new 3 compartment shaft was sunk to 403 metres. The orebody was further delineated and the ground conditions within the orebody and surrounds were evaluated.At the end of 1965 the property was placed on a care and maintenance basis as a mining operation would be marginal with gold selling at $35 per ounce."

This information circular describes mining methods and practices at New Cornelia Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Ajo, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The New Cornelia mine (fig. 1) is at Ajo, a town in southwestern Arizona (fig. 2) on Arizona State Highway 85 in the western part of Pima County. The [oncentrator] and smelter are near the mine (fig. 3). Copper ore is mined, crushed, ground, and concentrated, and the concentrates are smelted. Copper is cast in anode form and sent to the Phelps Dodge Corp. refinery in El Paso, Tex.

Optical sensors have emerged during the telecom boom in the late 1900s, due to the availability to low-cost telecom-grade optical components. It's only after the telecom industry's fall in 2004 that optical sensors became sufficiently developed to be a viable technology for real-world applications. Geotechnical applications have long relied on electrical sensors such as thermocouples, strain, and the venerable vibrating wire to measure physical phenomena. Although these are well suited for a large variety of applications, electrical sensors cannot be used for all applications: these are vulnerable to noise, hazardous voltages and corrosion, limiting the environments in which they can be used. In addition, electrical wires can also become an issue when sensors require external excitation or are distant from the measurement system. Finally, changes in physical properties of electrical sensors and systems over time makes regular calibration a necessity - not easy to do when these are permanently mounted on structures. Optical sensing systems are non-conducting and use light to perform various measurements. There are several optical sensor technologies available, each with different strengths and weaknesses. In addition, there are different methods of interrogating optical sensors, each of which also present different strengths and weaknesses. To make matters worse, configuring the interrogation and scaling to physical units can also be challenging to the unprepared engineer. This paper will present a holistic view of optical sensing, presenting the different optical sensor technologies and interrogation techniques. Sample optical sensing systems will be revealed and top considerations for optical sensing will be presented.
