The objectives of this study were to examine a representative cross section of formal safety analysis techniques developed for the nuclear and aerospace industries, to recommend those methods that would be suitable for application to the mining industry, and to include those methods in a user's manual. Volume II of this report, the user's manual, describes several methods that were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of the methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry.

Feldspar is no example of special mineralization in isolated spots: it can usually be found within a mile or so of almost anywhere. Along with silica sand, it is a major part of our world's total mineral composition. This fact imparts to it an economic status different from a sulfide ore, or potash, or phosphate. While every feldspathic "stringer" does not possess economic potential, the generous distribution does yield a high statistical frequency of good feldspar ore bodies: the adjective "good" being subject to some flexibility of interpretation. The strong chemical bonds of this alkali aluminum silicate give it certain use advantages, but under present technology its individual elements cannot practically be separated to create aluminum, potassium, sodium, silicon - or their oxides. Its present uses rely upon chemical inertness - as in fillers; and on its physical melting characteristics and their effect in glass, enamel, or ceramics.

Spontaneous combustion of coal has been studied by laboratory techniques using an apparatus in a small-scale laboratory testing. Coal?s inherent characteristics can be measured using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Crossing Point Temperature (CPT) methods. The DTA curve obtained after testing is compared with actual inherent moisture and its effect on spontaneous combustion has been investigated. It has been found that the Wits-Ehac Index increases as the inherent moisture of the sample increases. Therefore it can be deduced that liability to spontaneous combustion increases with increased inherent moisture. In addition, volatiles have a catalytic affect on self heating immediately after the inherent moisture is reduced. This is identified as stage two in the thermogram. The inherent moisture has a cooling effect during the initial stages of testing and is visible in the DTA thermogram. In addition, while an increase in carbon content means an increase in Wits-Ehac Index value, an ash content decreases the likelihood of on spontaneous combustion. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree A study into the stability of strike gullies at TauTona mine was to be carried out. In reaching the conclusions to follow, a three-stage process was followed. ?A literature study as well as discussions with management and workers alike to gain their inputs and perceptions. ?An ESH Department survey into the history of transgression from proper mine standard in TauTona strike gullies. Unfortunately records were found to be scarce and obscure and the importance of better inter-departmental recordings cannot be stressed enough. ?An underground survey of 11 pre-selected gullies distributed in both the UCL and LCL reef horizons. This stage is to carry the greatest weight in the points to be brought forward in this report. The process highlighted and ranked the following areas as the most critical role players in the deterioration of strike gullies: ?Poor blasting practice ?Sub-standard siding depth and lead-lags ?Split sets ?Off line gully development ?Adverse geological features. The following has been suggested to the mine to help reduce strike gully instability. ?Where possible, maintain lead-lags below 7 m?else increase the siding depth to suit. ?Decrease the gully width standard to 1.2 m (especially in ?high risk areas?). ?Discourage drillers from drilling side holes in gully face blast pattern. This will allow for time in which tendon support can be kept up to date. ?Ensure split sets are installed 1 m behind the gully face so as to prevent opening up of fractures. ?Utilize the centre split set in the 1:2:1 pattern to maintain the proper gully line. ?When adverse conditions prevail, it is necessary to apply a special support plan not only to the panel face, but also (just as importantly) to the gully as well. Shotcreting of the gully hanging is a suitable long-term consideration for providing the additional a real coverage needed. The Kiruna Mine in Sweden currently has three ventilation systems. The first two (a new and old system) serve the production areas. The third system is used for the facilities on the former main haulage level 775. That area includes offices and workshops for load haul dumpers (LHD) and drill rigs. The third ventilation system also covers the crushing and haulage on level 1045. At the present time, the total airflow for the mine is 1,600 m3/sec(3.4 million cfm). The current system serves the levels above the 775 level. The new one is for the levels between 775 and 1,085 m (2,540 and 3,560 ft), which are needed for the new ore body. When all of the production is below level 775, the old ventilation system will be closed down.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.'?,' "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. Underground mining of stone in the US is increasing, as is the depth of overburden above the mines. Data gathered from mine visits, maps, discussion with operators and numerical simulation have been used to investigate pillar design and recommend safe practice. Many pillars have slender shapes with relatively large adjacent mine openings: width-to-height ratios range from 0.54 to 3.13 and extraction ratios from 0.56 to 0.91. The pillar material is often very strong and average overburden only 80 m, but occasional failure due to excessive local stress has occurred where pillar size had been unintentionally reduced, overburdens were greater than 200 m, width-to-height ratios were less than 1.25 or extraction ratios were greater than 0.83. Pillars with width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail under excessive stress. When width-to-height ratios fall below 1.0, defects such as through-running discontinuities can have a significant influence on stability. Dip, orientation and material properties are also important

NOTHING in this paper is to be understood as even suggesting a moment's suspension of the splendid work now going forward on the Isthmus of Panama, except so far as it is related to the proposed locks. All the work already done, and all material purchased or ordered, would be available for the plan herein proposed. The situation and the problem concerned may be summarized as. follows : The scheme of a lock-canal through the Isthmus of Panama was adopted, as is well known, on two principal grounds-namely, the greater expense of a sea-level canal, and the longer time required for its construction. Of these, the latter is believed to have been the more influential. But further developments have diminished the weight of both, so that a reconsideration of the question is warranted. It is the purpose of this paper to advocate such a reconsideration-emphasizing the importance of certain objections to the lock-canal not mentioned or not duly appreciated in the report of those members of the International Board of Consulting Engineers who favored this form; showing the nature and bearing of the new facts developed; and, finally, proposing a combination of well-known methods and apparatus, which would, in my judgment, effect the construction of a sea-level canal in less time, and perhaps at no greater cost, than will be required for the remaining work on the lock-canal. SUMMARY RADIOACTIVE dynamite has been prepared by introducing a small amount of antimony-124 into the explosive. Test work is described on the effectiveness of this tracer, on radiation levels in its neighbourhood, and on different methods of .application. Factors determining the choice of isotope, amount of activity, and overall cost of this process are discussed. INTRODUCTION Instances are known in which dynamite remains unexploded in drill holes in mining operations. Usually such 'bootlegs' are easily located by inspection of the face and the powder is removed before subsequent drilling is started. Occasionally, however, serious accidents occur because workmen drill into an undetected piece of dynamite. In order to avoid such accidents it was suggested that a different method of location might be tied, such as that afforded by the use of radioactive tracers. This paper describes some experiments that were carried out under the auspices of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, with the active co-operation of Canadian Industries Ltd. and Canadian Refractories Ltd., to test the feasibility of such a scheme.

The latest downturn in the world’s metal prices has forced many mining companies to focus on cost reduction and productivity improvements to remain competitive. Maintenance represents a significant part of the overall operating costs in the mining industry. A structured, proactive maintenance approach, such as reliability-centered maintenance, can achieve cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition-monitoring systems are becoming commonplace because they have the potential to identify problems before failure. Detection of equipment degradation before failure will enable repairs to be scheduled, thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. The mining industry is in the midst of uncertain times. Decreasing commodity prices, demand, head grade and capital availability along with increasing environmental requirements have put pressure on mining companies to significantly reduce costs to maintain short- and long-term viability. Corporations are looking at expansion, merger/consolidation and financial/hedging programs to achieve these cost reductions. Mines are reducing costs by eliminating all but essential expenditures, increasing production levels, reducing overtime and investing in new technologies.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Chino mines at Santa Rita, Grant County, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Chino mine's, operates an open-cut copper mine at Santa Rita, Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex. This mine is located about 16 miles east and slightly north of Silver City, the county seat. The ore is-transported in standard railroad cars by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co., approximately 10 miles to Hurley where it is milled. The concentrated are shipped approximately l'70 miles over the same railroad to the smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., at El Paso, Tex. (fig. 1)

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Carbon dioxide sequestration by conversion to carbonates has become a promising option for CO2 storage. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of CO2 sequestration at ambient conditions using a Ca-rich industrial waste in a carbonate solution. The Ca-rich industrial waste used in this study was lignite fly ash. Fly ash was chosen because it is cheap, available near large CO2 point sources, already in powder form, and reactive due to amorphous properties. In the experimental set-up, CO2 absorption was inferred by monitoring feed and exhaust gas CO2 concentrations. The addition of an alkali to a fly ash-distilled water solution provided a 50% increase in CO2 absorption of the solution. Absorption time also increased by 50% compared to a fly ash-distilled water solution. TGA analysis was used to determine the extent of CO2 sequestration in the carbonate form. At a liquid to solid ratio of 20:1, the conversion of ?free? calcium to carbonates was 75%. A CO2 balance on the system concluded that at the current operating conditions 42% of the total CO2 fed to the system was sequestered in the carbonate form. SEM-EDS analysis of the fly ash particles before and after reaction with CO2 indicated that the carbonate compound being formed was calcium carbonate. The analysis identified rhomboidal structures on the surface of the fly ash particles after reaction with CO2, but not before. These rhomboids are characteristic of calcium carbonate formation and they had higher Ca, C, and O concentrations than the host spheres, suggesting calcium carbonate formation.

The productive potential of the Nation's principal active and inactive silver mining districts has been evaluated, using 1964 economic conditions and assumed silver prices ranging up to $3 per ounce. On this basis, the United States has an estimated 5 billion ounces of unmined silver, excluding minor byproduct silver in gold deposits. Approximately 3.5 billion ounces are contained in deposits requiring higher silver prices to be economically minable, and about 1.3 billion ounces are in currently operating mines. An analysis of silver consumption trends since 1954 indicates that the free world industrial market will climb to nearly 800 million ounces annually by 1985. U.S. industrial silver consumption has been projected to increase at an annual rate of 4 percent from 1965 to 1985. Average annual increase for the remainder of the free world has been 8.1 percent since 1953; this is expected to level off with an estimated average increase of 5 percent to 1975 and 4 percent from 1976 to 1985. Foreign silver production has, in the past, exceeded consumption, but in 1960 the supply deficit was over 100 million ounces. U.S. production, also traditionally exceeding demand, was suddenly overtaken at the start of World War II. By 1964 the annual deficit, excluding coinage, was over 84 million ounces. World coinage requirements of silver are fast declining and expected to total only 25 million ounces annually by 1985. In fact, coins are already becoming major short-term source of silver to fill the large deficit between industrial demand and current production. The larger, long-term deficit (to 1985, the limit of this study) must be balanced by silver from the hoards and new production from silver deposits. Eventually all of the deficit must be met by new production or silver prices will rise until consumption is greatly curtailed. To balance free world supply and demand, it is estimated that the free world must produce an additional 85 million ounces by 1975 and 375 million ounces by 1985. The estimated proportion expected from U.S. deposits is 17 million ounces by 1975 and 74 million ounces by 1985.

Despite limited discussion, Chemistry of Flotation is a good text and reference 1985 by M. C. Fuerstenau, J. D. Miller, and M. C. Kuhn Society of Mining Engineers Caller No. D Littleton, CO 80127 Softcover, $23.50 (member), $18.50 (student member), $28.50 (list) Review by Richard R. Klimpel Chemistry in Flotation, as stated by the authors, is intended as a textbook for students as well as a reference book for practicing flotation engineers. It covers subject matter related to surface phenomena; collectors and collector salts; natural floatability; the flotation of sulfide minerals, insoluble oxide and silicate minerals, semisoluble salts, and soluble salts; and slime coatings. There are no discussions in the book on practical plant implications of flotation chemistry, such as the influence of rate, particle size effects, dosage, flotation equipment, and methods of chemical addition. The book itself is small (only 177 pages), and, as published, is in an easy-to-handle soft cover. Once one accepts the intent of the authors, this book really does represent a very concise and convenient summary of the chemistry of flotation. It is, however, far from complete in its discussion of concepts and implications of data. Very often in the presentation, key prior knowledge (or at least subject matter awareness) not given in the book, is assumed. Thus, depending on one's familiarity with the specific subject matter, some sections can be easily followed while others could be tough going. Some of the discussion is so brief and terse on important subjects that unless the reader already realizes the meaning of the presentation, the conclusions to be drawn are not always clear. Therefore, if one is not expecting a self-contained primer on flotation chemistry, this book is very useful. To this end, the book is recommended to practitioners of flotation chemistry. The presentation of data in figures and tables is good. It helps considerably in the book achieving its conciseness. The authors certainly are qualified and knowledgeable in the subject matter - apparent in the style of presentation. In summary, this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed this book and will use it as a concise review of flotation chemistry. Richard R. Investigators there reported the latest discoveries, developments in commercial practice, and state-of-the-art reviews of scientific principles and applications of various technologies for handling, processing, and use of high sulfur coals.
