"The environmental concern is creating pressure for the substitution of high energy consumption materials for natural and sustainable ones. Compared to synthetic fibers, natural fibers have shown advantages in technical aspects such as flexibility and toughness. So there is a growing worldwide interest in the use of these fibers. Buriti fiber extracted from buriti palm tree (Mauritia flexuosa), presents some significant characteristic, but until now only few studies on buriti fiber were performed. This work aims to make the analysis of the tensile strength of epoxy composites reinforced with buriti fibers. This analysis was performed in fibers with diameters between 0.1 and 0.4 mm. Those fibers were incorporated into the epoxy matrix with volume fraction from 0 to 30%. The fiber diameters were measured by a profile projector. After fracture the specimens were analyzed by a SEM (scanning electron microscope).IntroductionNatural fibers with high amount of cellulose, also known as lignocellulosic fibers, have been used from primeval times of our civilization. In the last century, synthetic fibers such as nylon, carbon, aramid and glass fibers gained interest owing to superior strength and precise dimensional control. Natural fibers were then replaced by synthetics in many fields such as textiles, sports goods and appliances. In the past decades, however, environmental issues drawn, once again, the attention to lignocellulosic fibers as possible substitute for intensive energy-consuming and long term polluting synthetics, specially the glass fiber(1). In particular, research works have disclosed the potential advantages associated with the use of lignocellulosic fibers as the reinforcing phase in polymer composites(2-3). Among the advantages it is worth mentioning the renewability, recyclability, biodegradability and the fact that natural fibers are neutral with respect to CO2 emissions responsible for global warming. In addition to environmental benefits(l,10) the lignocellulosic fibers present economical advantages, such as worldwide abundance and comparatively low costs as well as some technical properties associated with flexibility and toughness( 4), which contribute to the performance of automobile components fabricated with natural fibers composites(l 1-13)."

"The mechanical behavior and the fracture characteristics of composites with DGEB/TETA epoxy matrix reinforced with up to 30% in volume of continuous and aligned ramie fibers were evaluated by tensile tests. Specimens with selected thin fibers aligned along the tensile axis were room temperature tested to rupture. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed significant increase in both the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus. The fracture analysis indicated the possible mechanism for the fiber/matrix interaction, which could be responsible for the composite performance.IntroductionSince the middle of last century, polymer composites have substitute many conventional monolithic materials in applications ranging from aerospace to sport [l]. The main advantages of these composites are the low density and flexible properties specially using fiber as reinforcement to suit the mechanical performance requirements [2]. These are usually high strength and stiffuess requirements that could be reached with synthetic fibers such as gloss, carbon and aramid fibers. Its most commonly used example is ""fiberglass"", i.e., a thermoset polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fiber. Indeed, ""fiberglass"" has a specific strength of the order of 500 MPa.cm3/g, which is the double of the strongest steels like the maraging. This motivated, at earlier times, ""fiberglass"" to replace many conventional materials including wood and natural fiber composites. Today, ""fiberglass"" has a wide range of uses from aerospace systems and appliances to sport and leisure components. However, its fabrication as well as those of any synthetic fiber such as carbon and aramid composites, requires a relatively large amount of energy. Presently, a growing concern exists regarding the consequences to the environmental by gases like C02 associated with both the energy consumption and the processing of synthetic fibers and their composites. These gases are well known responsible for global warming [3]."

Scrap recycling has become an increasingly important source of metal units for the aluminum industry during the past 25 years. Aluminum scrap from the manufacture and recycling of cans, automobiles, buildings and other products has created an industry that melts these products and delivers the metal in molten or sow form to companies that make cast parts or fabricated products This rapidly developing recycling industry has contributed a large number of severe (Force 3) molten aluminum explosions (25) with associated fatalities (19) to the Aluminum Association data accumulated during the past nineteen years. The explosions that occurred in recyclers plants represent 17% of the total explosions, 33% of the Force 3 explosions and 37% of the fatalities reported. These explosions can be prevented! This paper will identify causes of these explosions and procedures that can be used to prevent them.

This paper aims at presenting numerical results showing the impact of different parameters on the limitation of entrained slag from ladle to tundish during the ladle drainage. These parameters are process parameters, slag properties or external actuator acting directly on ladle slag behaviour. Numerical simulations based on the use of the CFD Fluent software illustrate the vortexing and non-vortexing phenomena appearing during the ladle drainage. This numerical tool validated by experimental data acquired on water model has been applied to industrial configurations. It shows that the slag properties (viscosity, surface tension?) or some modifications of parameters (slide gate opening, geometry of the ladle bottom?) have a positive effect on the slag entrainment and also on the decrease of the ladle heel. Finally, the modelling of the behaviour of an external actuator injecting some gas in the region of the nozzle reveals interesting possibility for reducing slag entrainment from ladle to tundish during the final steps of the drainage.

The zinc, lead and alumina contents in copper smelting slag are increasing with the increase in waste recycling. The recovery of base metals such as lead and zinc from copper converter slag is important from both an economical and environmental perspective. As a fundamental study of the metal recovery by reduction process, activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag under iron saturation at 1573K are derived from the data of slag-metal equilibrium experiments. On the basis of the obtained data, the activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag were compared with those of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx ternary system. Addition of alumina increases activities coefficient of ZnO and PbO in SiO2 rich side of the slag, and decreases them in CaO rich side.

Recovery of dissolved copper from discard slags is a critical consideration affecting the economics of copper smelting. Slag cleaning is frequently carried out in electric furnaces, however reduction by injection of natural gas in a holding furnace may offer a lower cost alternative in some circumstances. As the residence time of the injected gas is short, the factors controlling the rate of reduction need to be clarified in order to optimise the design of the slag cleaning furnace. A series of medium scale (200 kg) reduction tests to investigate the rate of reduction of copper-containing slags by injection of natural gas-nitrogen mixtures between 1150-1250C was carried out by CSIRO Minerals. The composition of the gas in the top-space of the reactor was found to be significantly more reducing than the slag, indicating that thermodynamic equilibrium was not established between the slag and the gas in the bubble plume. An apparent first order rate law was observed between the rate of oxygen elimination from the bath and the magnetite concentration of the bath. The dissolved copper concentration was closely correlated with the oxygen potential of the slag, suggesting a partial equilibrium between the dissolved components of the slag. The utilisation efficiency of the natural gas decreased as the natural gas flow rate was increased. The results of the tests tend to indicate that the rate is controlled by a mixed reaction kinetics/ mass transport mechanism. The work was supported by Xstrata Copper ? Mt Isa Mines.

"Control of the weld penetration, weld pool shape and temperature field in arc welding is critical to achieve the desired microstructure and mechanical properties in the resultant welds. This is particularly important in welding gamma titanium aluminides (y-TiAl) where the weld pool is relatively shallow and the temperature gradient in the heat-affected zone is quite steep. This paper investigates theoretically and experimentally the evolution of the shape of the weld pool for stationary gas tungsten arc welds in y-TiAl alloys. A mathematical model has been developed for predicting the electric current flow, the resultant electromagnetic forces in the metal, and the transient development of the temperature and velocity fields in the molten pool generated by a spatially variable heat flux at the arc-striking zone. The governing equations were solved numerically using the control volume technique. Welding experiments were carried out to determine the shape of the weld pool and the extent of the heat affected zone at different welding times for model validation. The numerical predictions were found to be in reasonable agreement with measurements. It is suggested that the model presented in this paper is likely to provide the information needed for predicting the microstructure and mechanical properties of y-TiAl welds. IntroductionIn recent years, there has been considerable interest in the welding of gamma titanium aluminides as a means of manufacturing high-temperature, high-performance components for turbine and automobile engines. These alloys are highly reactive, and must be welded in vacuum or inert gas atmosphere, rendering electron beam, and inert gas tungsten arc welding (GTA) to be the only suitable welding techniques for joining these materials [1-3]. The GTA welding is especially attractive because of its flexibility and relative cost-effectiveness. However, previous studies on the weldability and weld properties of these alloys using this process revealed a decrease in the mechanical properties in the fusion zone [4]. This is generally attributed to the change of the original duplex structure to a dendritic structure amplified by the shallowness of weld spot. Quantifying the effect of arc operating parameters on the geometry and temperature profile of the welding pool prior cooling is the first step for controlling the fusion zone microstructure and mechanical properties."

"Industrial scale testing was performed in the plant-site of Bor Company. Charging sample was from 4-5 tons for each particular test. All operations in industrial scale investigations were carried out in one furnace. For the aim of successful realization of experiments, and primarily for safety and prevention the risk of toxic contamination the working environment, a plant was designed and constructed for cooling and wet dedusting of gases formed during smelting process, zinc removal and flame refinement of molten metal. For the requirements of industrial investigations a complete plant for cooling and wet dedusting of gases has been constructed for brass scrap processing. In this plant, the original ultra-sonic water spraying devices have been installed. The efficiency of such simplified system for gas treatment has been 98,6%. Introduction Permanent development of techniques and technology causes formation the considerable quantities of secondary raw materials that are much more relevant as the raw material base for many metals. Due to a fact that large quantities of metal, are concentrated in the waste materials, large consideration is given to this topic, and numerous technologies for this waste recycling are developed in the world nowadays. High energz price and permanent increase of metal price on the world market have made that secondary raw material tretament, for the aim of various metals production, becomes more and more relevant in the world. In comparison of metal production using enrichment and metallurgical treatment of primary raw materials, the non-ferrous metals production from secondary raw materials has a range of advantages, as well as: - Low level of capital investments, - High technological recovery of qualitative secondary raw materils, - Considerably low consumption of energetic resources regarding to the treatment of primary raw materials (ore and concentrate), - Reduced consumption of unrecoverable mineral resources, - Reduced enviroment pollution [1,6]."

"The experimental study on the phase equilibrium and distribution of minor elements such as chromium and copper between magnesia saturated FeOx-MgO-SiO2 slag and Fe-Ni alloy were carried out under controlled oxygen partial pressure between 10-6-5 and 10-10 using CO and CO2 mixed gas at 1773 and 1873 K.The effect of slag additives such as lime (CaO/SiO2 molar ratio: 1) and alumina (AlO1.5/SiO2 molar ratio: 0.1) on the distribution behavior of the minor elements was also investigated.The value of distribution ratio for chromium, defined by (%Cr in slag)/[%Cr in alloy], is larger than 70 at the pO2 region conducted in the present study for the MgO saturated FeOx-MgO-SiO2 slag at 1773K. These value are almost 4-order higher then that of nickel though the distribution ratio of copper shows similar values with nickel. Analysis of the data indicates that addition of lime in the slag and the increase of temperature reduce the dissolution of chromium into the slag and the addition of aluminum increases the dissolution of chromium into the slag while reduces the dissolution of copper and nickel.IntroductionChromium. is a minor element in a nickel oxide ore but a Japan major component in the secondary material of stainless steel and is also introduced in the Fe-Ni production process due to dissolving bricks of a furnace. Chromium is a concerned matter for the beneficial utilization and disposition of ·slag because Cr6+ is a harmful element. Considering Fe-Ni as an alloy component in steel making, and the demand of high purity nickel, chromium is an -undesirable element that has to be eliminated into slag prior to the steel making, or the production of high temperature refractory alloys. On · the other ·hand chromium is an element of steel alloy for many applications, thus Fe-Ni containing chromium in minor element is desirable in some stainless steel making."

The Bulong deposit, situated near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and owned by Resolute Limited, is a lateritic deposit containing on average 1.1% nickel and 0.09% cobalt. A process has been developed and tested at the mini-plant scale for direct solvent extraction and separation of Co and Ni from solutions derived by acid pressure leaching of Bulong ore. In this paper, two solvent extraction processes are described. The first process uses Cyanex 272 to extract cobalt and reject nickel to the raffinate. The second process uses Versatic 10 to extract and purify nickel. The loaded strip nickel solution is suitable for electrowinning. Results of both batch laboratory tests and continuous mini-plant trials are presented. The selectivity of the solvents with respect to the major impurities such as Mn, Mg, Ca, and Zn is also discussed.

"Ordered arrays of TiO2 nanotubular photocatalysts were prepared by a simple anodization process. Band gap states of the TiO2 were altered by controlling the anodization electrolyte composition and thermal annealing conditions that resulted in enhanced photo activity. These nanotubes were used for reducing CO2 to methanol either by photochemical or photo electrochemical routes. Pd nano-particle loaded TiO2 nanotubes were employed for photochemical reduction of CO2 to methanol that showed a conversion rate of 12 x 10-3 mol m- 2h-1. Carbon modified TiO2-xCx type nanotubes were used as photo anode and Ti as cathode for photo electrochemical reduction of CO2. The potential of Ti cathode was maintained at -0.5 V SCE. The formation rate of methanol was determined as 13 x 10-3 mol.m-2h-1.1. IntroductionGlobal warming due to emission of carbon dioxide is a serious environmental concern. The atmospheric concentration of CO2 is about 384 ppm by volume and about 3 x 1012 tonnes by weight. Burning of fossil fuels and deforestation are the leading causes for increase in the anthropogenic CO2. More than 32 x 109 tonnes of CO2 are released per year (based on 2006 data) worldwide from the fossil fuel. Pumping CO2 from the fossil fuel power plants into deep ocean basin is one of the most discussed disposal options. The other potential option is converting this green house gas into valuable fuels.Carbon dioxide feed stock can be converted into fuels of solid, liquid or gas phase by chemical, electrolytic, photocatalytic and photo-electrocatalytic methods. Reduction of CO2 to fuel form of any phase requires energy. The reduction process should be energy efficient so that we do not spend more energy and emit more (indirect) CO2 in the process of converting CO2. From this point of view, conversion processes occurring at room temperature look attractive.Electrolytic conversion of CO2 into various forms such as methane1, ethane2, ethylene3, methanol4,5, ethanol6, n-propanol, formic acid7, and formaldehyde has been widely reported. The standard equilibrium potential (at pH: 0) for reduction of CO2 to methanol is 0.14 VSHE and to methane is 0.2 VSHE which is thermodynamically more favorable than hydrogen reduction. "In this paper, firstly the 3D single-phase turbulent steady fluid flow in a vessel with four baffles stirred by a single impeller is mathematically simulated. Turbulence is modeled by using the standard k - e model. Sliding-grid method is used to model the impeller. The flow domain is divided into two cylindrical, the inner one rotates at the same speed as the impeller, and the outer one is fixed with the baffles. Results indicate that the high-speed zone is near the paddles, and larger stirring speed generates larger fluid flow velocity. The calculated stirring intensity data are used to analyze the experimental results. Secondly the effects, such as filter pore size, gas flow rate and NaCl concentration, on bubble size are studied by experiment. For the particle removal rate by bubble flotation in this vessel, first order kinetics is adopted. The effects of initial number of the particles, gas flow rate, particle and bubble size, stirring speed and surface condition, on the removal rate constant are discussed, and an empirical equation is derived by experimental data. At last, a simple model is developed to study the particle attachment probability on bubble surface under turbulent flow conditions. IntroductionIt is well known that inclusions have a bad effect on steel quality. Trying to remove inclusions from liquid steel as many as possible is one of the main objects for the metallurgical workers. Lots of ways are developed to remove inclusions from liquid steel. Gas injection is an effective one. This technique is used to achieve homogeneity in the temperature and metal composition and to assist in the removal of second phase and dissolved impurities from molten steel. Gas injection is commonly applied to the secondary metallurgy processes and continuous casting, for example the ladle argon gas treatment, RH vacuum degassing, and the gas injection in the Submerged Entry Nozzles (SEN) of continuous casting mold, etc. The development of these processes focuses on achieving two conditions: fine bubbles and good mixing. Fine bubbles provide a large gas/liquid interfacial area and a high attachment probability to inclusions, and good mixing enhances the efficiency of impurity transfer."
