As the techniques and resolution for three-dimensional spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional X-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of 10 µm can be achieved with the use of microfocus X-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam X-ray microtomography system was installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility was designed to obtain 2,048 by 2,048-pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind instrument can be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for many applications, such as three-dimensional liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and the air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of X-ray microtomography not only allows for the quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allows, for the textural characterization and determination of phase continuity. This paper presents information regarding the current use of this new facility and a review of potential applications for the advanced analytical system. The Inland Steel Company operates five underground iron mines in the Lake Superior District. The two largest of these, from the standpoint of productive capacity, are the Sherwood Mine in Iron River and the Bristol Mine in Crystal Falls, both on the Menominee Range of Michigan. It is at these two mines that we have had our principal experience with belt conveyor installations underground, .At the Sherwood Mine, which has an annual capacity of about 450,000 tons, the first conveyor belt installationwas made in 1947 when conveyors were installed in the main haulage drifts on the 1200 ft, level, It was estimated at that time that approximately 5,000,000 tons would be mined from the stopes above the 1200 ft, level and. that if all this material could be moved to the shaft by belt conveyor, the entire cost of operation, including maintenance and the amortization of the equipment, would be about $,05 per ton, which was slightly more than half of what the cost would have been by conventional tramming methods employing locomotives and cars. Now, ten years later, the 1200 ft, level is almost completely mined out and we have actually removed. 5,200,000 tons and. the average cost of transporting this material to the shaft by belt conveyor has been $.095 per ton. Since there has been a substantial increase in hourly rate of pay and also in the cost of materials since 1947, we feel that the anticipated savings were very nearly realized., The 1200 ft, level installation at the Sherwood consisted of two 36" trunk line conveyors 815 feet long and 380 feet long, respectively, deliverying ore to the shaft. These in turn were fed. by three lateral 36" conveyors which paralleled the sides of the orebody, These gathering conveyors passed under draw points to which ore was brought from the stopes by mea S of scrapers or shaker conveyors, Shaker conveyors were used for a number of years in conjunction with the conveyor belt system of haulage but it was finally concluded that with this particular type of ore, the maintenance on shaker conveyors was excessive. Therefore, more recently, we have gone back to scrapers for the shorter distances and. are using belt conveyors in the scraper drifts for the longer distances. After this belt system had been in operation for about three years, it had proved to be so successful that it was decided to proceed with the same system or. a new level to be opened up 200 feet below. Instead of sinking the shaft and driving a horizontal drift to the orebody on the 1400 ft, level, an inclined conveyor drift was started near the shaft at the 1200 ft. level and driven downwards toward, the orebody at a slope of 15 degrees. The conveyor installed in this inclined drift is 36" wide, 990 feet long, is powered. by a 100 hp motor, and is capable of delivering 300 tons per hour to the 1200 ft, level shaft pocket. It is fed by lateral horizontal conveyors on the 1300 ft? 1400 ft., and 1425 ft, sub levels. Wien the inclined drift was started, the rock was scraped from the breast directly to the rock pocket at the shaft. As the distance increased., double scraping was employed, until the advance had reached 350 feet, At this point a portion of the final conveyor was installed, with a scraper slide near the breast, T e drift was then advanced be scraping on to the conveyor until a sufficient distance had been driven to permit the installation of an additional 200 feet of conveyor. This proved to be a very efficient and economical means of moving the development rock to the shaft and obviated the need of using cars or an inclined skip way, At the present time 85 percet of tie entire mine output is being mined below the 1200 ft, level and is delivered to the shaft via the inclined conveyor. The system appears to be working as well and as economically as did the conveyor systemonthe 1200 ft, level.

The Stanreck mine of Stanreck Uranium Mines Limited in located on Quirks Lake in the Elliot lake - Blind River area of Northern Ontario. It is approximately 25 miles north of the north shore of Lake Huron, equidistant between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The property was developed ad brought into production at a rate of 3,000 tens of ore/day during the uranium boom of the mid 1950's. By 1960 mine waters were becoming quite acid through the activity of bacteria. Treatment of this water was begun for pollution control and a small amount of uranium which had been leached from the ore by these acid waters was recovered. Development of bacterial leaching with a view to increasing production by this method commenced in December 1962. Subsequently, it was succeesfull in producing 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. of U308/month. Since late 1964 uranium production has been obtained solely from bacterial leaching. A rare earth concentrate was also made for its yttrium content during 1966 and 1967. This paper describes the development, operation and methods used in the underground bacterial leaching process.

Experiments were performed under batchwise wet grinding conditions with dolomite mineral. The vibration signal was received by an accelerometer and transmitted to a mini-processor. The signal was first stored on a digital tape recorder (OAT) in voltage format during the grinding tests. The original signal was then re-sampled and converted into data format for IBM or compatible personal computer by a digital oscilloscope. The root-mean-square (RMS) and power spectrum was estimated on the time-domain vibration signal. A partial correlation analysis was applied to the frequency-domain signal to detect the non-zero correlation between the frequency bands and the operating parameters. A multiple stepwise regression was used to locate the key frequency bands for describing a particular operating parameter. After vibration analysis, the operating parameters in grinding, for example, the mill speed, the powder filling, the pulp density, the pulp temperature and the particle size were found to be strongly correlated with a few frequency bands. The grinding process could therefore be monitored using the vibration signal.

Activities in offshore mineral exploration In Australia are increasing almost daily, at such a rate that this report will rapidly become out of date. At the time of writing, February 1967, there were no commercial discoveries of offshore minerals reported in Australia, although there has been definite encouragement in many fields. While this initial encouragement has not revealed any commercial mineral deposits offshore hopes are running high in Australia for success in 1967. Why should mineral deposits be expected offshore in Australia in the first place? The reasons are many. The minerals to be discovered also are many. The reasons are based on the history of alluvial and beach mining activities in Australia's past and at the present time, and on the physical environment of the vast Continental Shelf which surrounds the continent. A brief examination of the two primary features which are necessary before offshore mineral exploration can be contemplated should be, undertaken. Two favourable environments are necessary; firstly a Continental- Shelf to form a physical environment for the accumulation of the mineral deposits, and secondly a favourable political-legal environment to give the exploration companies adequate protection during exploration, and suitable long term arrangements for the exploitation of the deposits after discoveries have been made. Australia is well endowed with both of these.

Over the past several years, Newmont Gold Company (previously Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation) developed a new technology for the flotation of refractory auriferous sulfide minerals which is referred to as the N2TEC flotation process. Starting in April 1997, the first commercial flotation plant utilizing N2TEC technology was successfully commissioned at the Lone Tree Mine near Valmy, Nevada. The Lone Tree flotation plant was designed to process 4,085 mt/d of ore producing 494 mt/d of sulfide concentrate. A flotation tails leach CIP circuit was added to recover cyanide-soluble gold from the flotation tails. A portion of the flotation concentrate is blended with whole ore feed to the Lone Tree autoclave, up to the limit imposed by the current oxygen plant capacity. The remainder of the concentrate is shipped to either the Twin Creeks autoclaves or the Carlin roaster for subsequent oxidation and gold extraction. This paper discusses the results achieved in the commercial flotation plant compared to pilot plant testing and engineering design flotation modeling. Capital and operating cost information are also presented.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth's fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.

HISTORY The Surigao Nickel Refinery of Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corporation is located on Nonoc Island off the northwestern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. Nonoc Island is part of the Surigao Mineral Reservation which had been identified as early as 1912. Initial interest in these deposits was due to their iron content, and their value as a nickel deposit was not seriously entertained until the late 1950's. The Philippine government undertook extensive test pitting and sampling programmes at that time and in the early sixties Marinduque became involved in helping to establish firmer ore reserves. Evaluations of the test pitting programme indicated reserves of 75,000,000 tonnes of ore averaging 1.22% Ni, 0.1% Co and 38.5% Fe. The Philippine government called for bids on the reservation in 1962 and Marinduque and Sherritt Gordon carried out some feasibility studies for the recovery of nickel from the deposit. However, it was not until 1968 that Marinduque was granted proper authority to exploit the Surigao deposits. Marinduque and Sherritt then entered into an agreement which allowed Marinduque to utilize a process developed by Sherritt for treating lateritic ores. During 1968, a 25 st/d pilot plant was erected in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta for the purpose of modelling all process steps. A 10,000 tonne ore sample was sent from Nonoc as feed stock for the pilot plant.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the mechanism of shear-flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear-flocculation of silica was not observed with up to 10-4M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations 10-4 M (5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labelled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labelling group did not greatly affect the shear-flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labelled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicate the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-414 (5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear-flocculation.

Gold is an important byproduct and, locally, coproduct of porphyry copper deposits, and possesses potential for discovery as the major metal in porphyry deposits in either island arcs or Cordilleran belts. Tungsten and tin occur as major components of several potentially bulk-minable porphyry deposits, as well as being byproducts from the Climax porphyry molybdenum deposit. Whereas porphyry tin systems are localized in Cordilleran back-arc settings, their tungsten counterparts appear to span a range of geotectonic settings, from Cordilleran principal arcs through back-arcs to rifts. Although silver is a common byproduct of porphyry copper deposits, it tends to be preferentially concentrated with lead and zinc on the fringes of all types of porphyry deposits and/or as late-stage superpositions; the latter situation could be of some interest in the higher parts of porphyry systems. As byproducts, rhenium, uranium, platinoids and magnetite are exploited occasionally, and rutile and the rare metals, such as tantalum and niobium, have merited consideration.

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

The first successful heap leach of silver ores in the State of Arizona has been under continuous operation since early 1976 at the State of Maine Mine, two miles southwest of Tombstone, Arizona. The silver produced from leaching old mine dumps at this property vas the first in the Tombstone mining district to achieve a 999+ purity. While cyanide leaching of silver and gold ores is a time-proven accepted practice, a relatively new method of treatment called "heap" leaching was employed. Heap leaching is a comparatively inexpensive fast way to recover precious metals from low grade material.

Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs, which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study, evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed unidirectional powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer that brings clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This research effort provided another example of the enhancement in air quality that can be achieved in an enclosed cab from the implementation of an improved filtration system and by establishing positive pressurization from increased intake air volume and sealing the cab. This testing showed a significant reduction in respirable dust levels in the enclosed cab when comparing baseline versus post-testing results. Since dust levels were similar near the roof and floor of the cab during post-testing, the unidirectional flow pattern did not appear to significantly improve the performance over the conventional design in this study.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using pure crystalline apatite to investigate potential causes for low extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4-1/2H2O morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

Tabular uranium ore in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico, occurs as tabular layers of a urano-organic mixture suspended within host sandstones of the Morrison Formation. The intimate urano-organic association points to the organic material as the main ore control. Petrographic evidence indicates that the organic material was postdepositionally introduced into the host sandstone, probably as humic acids; however, the mechanism by which these acids precipitated from solution remains uncertain. A model, the cation scavenging model, is proposed in this paper to explain humic acid precipitation. The model, supported by evidence from regional alteration studies of the host sandstones, proposes that cations responsible for humic acid precipitation were scavenged from framework grains which altered during passage of the humic-rich fluids through the host sandstone. This process, coupled with the affinity of organic molecules for each other, caused flocculation of humic acids into tabular zones. The precipitated humic substances then continued to concentrate uranium to form the orebodies. The cation scavenging model requires only one solution, the humic-bearing solution, in the precipitation process. All cations necessary for humic acid precipitation originated in the host sandstones. This model contrasts with a previously proposed model--the brine interface or two solution hypothesis--in which it was proposed that a cation-rich brine introduced into the host sandstones provided the cations necessary for humic acid precipitation. The brine hypothesis has several drawbacks, one of which is unrealistic hydrologic reconstructions necessary to accommodate mineralization at various stratigraphic horizons in the Morrison Formation. Moreover, no mineralogic evidence exists to suggest a brine occupied the host sandstones at the time of mineralization. The proposed cation scavenging model for humic acid precipitation not only readily accounts for humic acid precipitation, but also is consistent with geologic observations and regional alteration studies.

During the past eight years there has been a dramatic change in the iron ore industry of Minnesota, in that its status has changed from that of a seller's market to a higly competitive buyer's market. Minnesota's natural ores must now be beneficiated and up-graded considerably to be marketed in order to compete with the higher grade foreign ores as well as with the locally produced and highly desirable taconite pellets. With the passage of the "Taconite Amendment' in the November, 1964 election, the taconite industry commenced to expand in Minnesota, which, although initiated in that state, was benefiting many other states and some foreign countries to a much greater extent than Minnesota. These other areas were actually appropriating markets that had been established and retained by Minnesota for many years. Since the approval by the state voters of this amendment, there has been a great increase in the development of taconite properties on the Mesabi Range.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.
