First of all let me say what a genuine pleasure it is to be here. Acapulco certainly is a beautiful change. I'm going to spend sometime talking about change, because frankly I'm astounded at the rate of change in our world today. One good example of this, reminds me that the first time I spoke before the AIME two years ago, we were at the Ramada Inn in Beckley, West Virginia. Today we're at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Now that's what I call a change. Seriously though, I'm sure you've all heard it said that the most consistent thing about our society is its constant change. Five years ago, no one could have predicted the changes we experienced in the United States during the first half of the 1970's. In the past twenty-four months alone, we have seen two presidents, three vice-presidents and hundreds of administration and government personnel changes. We have stumbled from one social crisis to another, while suffering through rising inflation, major energy shortages and labor unrest that could plunge us into a full scale economic depression. In view of these constant and unpredictable changes around us, it's obvious that we must learn to deal with change and "roll with the punches" if we are to survive. A controversial book published recently, explores in detail the various aspects of change and its impact on man.

The purpose of roasting gold ores is to release for extraction, typically by cyanidation, the small particles of gold which are surrounded by refractory stone. The roasting simply opens up passages for the penetration of solution into the interior of the ore particles. This is accomplished by the removal by volatilization or formation of volatile oxides of certain constituents such as sulfur, arsenic or antimony. Temperature is an important parameter. High temperatures tend to form a dense iron particle rather than a "spongy" calcine. The dense iron particles result in lower gold recoveries. High temperature can cause melting of some components which also results in gold encapsulation. Roasting of refractory gold ore concentrates has been practiced for decades. Multiple hearth, rotary kiln and muffle reactors were first used for roasting. Fluid bed roasting provided a low capital cost, low maintenance technology with better process control and soon became the favored technology. The first fluid bed concentrate roasters were commissioned in the late 1940's. Early fluid beds were "bubbling" type. Environmental considerations did not significantly impact on the design. Feedstocks were highly exothermic and reaction rates were relatively rapid. Roasting today must compete with other technologies for treatment of refractory ores. Ore bodies which are not

Oleic acid has been almost invariably used in the flotation of siliceous fluorite ores. The performance of oleic acid, however, deteriorates with carbonaceous fluorite ores. Oleoyl sarcosine developed recently has been found to produce results superior over oleic acid with ores containing high calcite contents. While the mechanism of oleate adsorption is usually considered as chemisorption involving calcium oleate formation on both calcite and fluorite, no mechanism has been so far proposed to explain the adsorption mechanism of oleoyl sarcosine. In this study, the selectivity of oleoyl sarcosine, as inferred from flotation, zeta potential and infrared measurements, is ascribed to the interaction of fluorine ion to the nitrogen via hydrogen bonding.

Control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. Understanding the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been at-tempted. In this paper, first, a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It in¬corporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.

This paper presents the concepts which are presently being utilized in the design of coal export terminals. Criteria for selecting a viable site and establishing the terminal plan are presented. Factors affecting the design of the terminal as well as the present techniques and procedures in use today to determine the optimum use of equipment will be discussed along with the current trends in export terminal control systems. Finally capital and operating costs for a typical export terminal are reviewed.

INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. Cell Quantification and Measurement of Mitogenesis Twenty-four hours after the addition of tritiated thymidine, the fibroblasts were washed with 5ml of fresh serum-free media, centrifuged and resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline. The cells were dissolved in 0.5m1 of O.1N NaOH and radioactivity determined in a beta counter. Incorporation of trititaed thymidine as an index of DNA synthesis was expressed as DPM/fibroblast. Rare earth element (REE)-and gold-bearing breccia pipes are a potentially significant economic target in the Pea Ridge iron ore mine, Washington County, Missouri. The Pea Ridge deposit is one of eight known volcanic-hosted iron ore deposits in the Middle Proterozoic St. Francois terrane, which are similar to the Olympic Dam-type deposits of Australia. The iron orebody is steeply dipping, tabular-shaped, and cuts across the host rhyolite. The footwall of the deposit is zoned from the massive apatite-bearing magnetite core outward to heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, specular hematite zone, to an extensive silicified zone. The hanging wall is zoned from the massive magnetite core outward to a heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, and an amphibole skarn zone. The REE-rich breccia pipes cut through the various lithologies along the footwall at or near contacts. They are typically 60 m long, 15 m wide, and extend at least 120 m vertically. The pipes are comprised of fragments of rhyolite host rock, massive magnetite zone, specular hematite zone, and silicified zone rocks supported in a matrix of rock flour, barite, feldspar, monazite, apatite, chlorite, xenotime, and, locally, gold. Total REE oxide content of samples of the ground mass material, which are not diluted with lithic fragments, average about 20 weight percent. Grades from working faces in the mine are lower and average about 12 weight percent. Gold distribution is erratic, but concentrations are as high as 371 parts per million.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. To improve the design of this method, the working effects of this method and the performance requirements for the initial support need to be clarified. As part of a joint project on fine particle processing, sponsored by the Consortium de Recherche Minérale (COREM), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Hydro-Quebec, two flotation plant circuits were sampled to identify and quantify the causes of mineral losses within several particle size ranges. Size distributions, size-by-size assays and global chemical assays (Cu, Zn, Fe, S) were determined for the major streams. Size distributions were measured in 13 classes by sieving, cyclo sizing (-45 µm), and laser beam diffraction analysis. BILMAT, a material balance computation software package, was used to optimise the sampling, to estimate the unmeasured variables, and to assess and improve the quality of the information generated. The methodology has been extended to correct cyclo sizer data and reduce discontinuities of up to 20% at the transition from sieves to cyclo sizer. The paper describes the methodology and the main conclusions emerging from material inventory of the flow sheets.

During the past two years, there has been an increasing acceptance of process automation among ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic rock processing operations in an attempt to keep total unit costs in line in a market situation where labor and material costs are rising almost daily. Previous technical papers (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) have described, in considerable detail, instrumentation and automatic control devices that have been successfully applied in a wide variety of crushing and grinding facilities. While many of the basic control philosophies that evolved almost ten years ago remain essentially unchanged, new components and devices have been developed during the past two years that permit these philosophies to be better implemented in operating plants. Some of these devices and their application will be discussed with particular emphasis placed in describing the basic control philosophy employed as well as some of the hardware or components comprising typical crushing and grinding circuit control systems. Before any instrumentation or automatic control system can be successfully devised for a specific facility, there must be a clear understanding and agreement by supplier and user as to the control system objective. In the case of a crusher feed rate control system, the objective is generally to maximize thru-put of a given finished product size. While this is often the case in a grinding circuit automatic control system, the reasons may be entirely different. Taconite processors whose end product is to be pelletized, generally attempt to control their grind within narrow limits to optimize balling action. Other milling operations are more concerned with obtaining metallurgical liberation and can, in many cases, tolerate wider swings in finished grind.

The CMC-3 new generation system for continuous methane monitoring enables on-line measurement of methane concentration within the range of 0-100% CH4 with a great autonomy of operation. In principle the system has been worked out in the asspect of hazard detection in mines endangered with rock and gas outbursts. But after last crash in the Halemba colliery, according to the recommendation of the after-accident committee, the system was directed to this colliery for operational tests. The paper describes construction and functions of this system and gives some results of tests conducted at the Halemba colliery. The results point out the necessity of using monitoring equipment of continuous operation in mines of high dynamics of methane emission. INTRODUCTION Commonly used in Polish coal mining the methane monitoring systems of CTT/63/46 Up or CMM-20 and CMC-1 type are based on cyclic measurements with 4-minute repetition of measurements. This period has been stated sufficient from viewpoint of methane emission dynamics under normal exploatation. In these systems, automatic switching-off electrical power is performed by the surface station, i.e in case of detecting exceeded concentration value the station generates control pulse signal which actuates the switchng-off devices CRA and IZZO. Such a way of disconnection causes a considerable time delay, up to several minutes, in electric power break at hazardous areas. In the methane monitoring system with the new CMC-3 station, the different phylosophy of operation has been applied. Measurement of methane concentration is performed in a continnous way. In case of exceeding the alarm value, immediate control of the IZZO unit directly by methane monitor follows and consequently energy break without necessity of communicating with the surface station. Alarm values are set directly in methane monitor. The system ensures central powering of underground equipment from the surface, and in case of power failure the methane monitor equipped with battery operates autonomously for about 12 hours. Such an extention of the methane monitor funtionality has been achieved thanks to the use of internal microprocessor controller. The system with the CMC-3 station has been worked out in the aspect of methane hazard detection in mines exposed to gas outbursts. Presented is a thermodynamic feasibility analysis of extracting base metal chlorides from low-grade, multi-metallic oxide ores using CaC[1]2 as a chlorinating agent in the presence of SO2 and O2. The oxides react to form corresponding chlorides, while CaC[1]2 is converted to CaSO4. The Ellingham diagram is used for comparing the standard Gibbs' free energy change for the sulfation-chlorination reaction of a large number of oxides. Except for alumina, silica and chromia, most of the other metal oxides will be converted to their respective chlorides. The volatile chlorides can be condensed, and the chlorides present in the condensed state can be leached. A process is proposed that uses a nontoxic chlorinating agent and gives an efficient separation of the metallic values from the gangue.

The paper deals with a computer method and algorithm of optimization of the rescue routes for the endangered staff in the case of fire in a given place of the mine. The adapted method is based on the objective function and realizes the algorithm of the shorest path with weighers assigned to it. The objective function is so defined that it reflects possibly all the hazards and difficulties arising during a fire in the mine. The algorithm is enhanced by an empirical formula for calculation of the smoke zone as result of a mine fire. The presented results of computations of optimal routes for several simple examples using the canonical scheme of the mine network and simulated fires are satisfying and prove the method, the algorithm and the coded program to be correct. The program will be a part of the software library of the mine ventilation engineer. The data for the program will be updated on-line from the fire detection systems.

Traditional linear approaches oversimplify the complexities of ore blending. Adopting nonlinear blending models in mining and mineral processing is critical to enhancing prediction accuracy and allowing optimization regarding nonadditive variables, such as metallurgical recovery. This study implements a simulated annealing algorithm in short-term mine planning that seeks to optimize the metal recovery by considering how to blend the ore in the mine better. Two nonlinear metallurgical recovery models are used as inputs to the algorithm to represent synergistic and antagonistic blending. The results of the case study demonstrate that the optimized schedule exhibits improvements in both blending behaviors when contrasted with conventional linear-based scheduling plans.

Interpretation of presently available geological information indicates that most of the periods of significant metal deposition in the Washington Cascades Range are, at least in part, genetically related to late Cretaceous -Tertiary intrusive episodes. Chemically, the most favorable environment for base metal deposition is high in potassium. Characterizing the advanced stages of these chemical alteration conditions are the silicate mineral assemblages orthoclase and/or secondary biotite. Wall rock alteration includes both deuteric and hydrothermal processes, the intensity of which primarily depends upon the degree of fracturing in the country rock prior to the introduction of secondary material. Broadly speaking, the primary physical controls for the distribution and concentration of sulfides appear to be a series of structural couples involving both northwest (paralleling regional trends) and northeast--striking systems. Meaningful base metal exploration in the Washington Cascades demands a basic understanding of the various geologic factors related to the distribution of the sulfide deposits. Any geologist contemplating Cascade work should be well grounded in the fundamental concepts of petrology and structure.as these constitute two of his most beneficial aids. The acquisition of the detailed data necessary for this understanding may seem a bit academic, yet it has been demonstrated in numerous instances that a fair economic appraisal of a particular property or mining district depends primarily upon the ability of the geologist to recognize the subtle environmental differences which could lead to the discovery of a major ore deposit.

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-ordering grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the Austin, Klimpel, and Luckie procedures. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56, 0.82, 8.36, 4.41, and 5 m in diameter assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distributions and capacities for batch grinding in the smaller mills and open-circuit grinding in the larger mills. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values except for the 5-m diam mill. The Bond method gave capacity predictions that were 4570 to 150% too high.

Cerro de Pasco Corporation operates five large base metal mines in Peru having a combined production of some three million tons of ore a year. An integrated complex of concentrators, smelters and refineries produces annually about 25,600 short tons of copper, 48,100 short tons of lead, 60,500 short tons of zinc metal, 102,300 short tons of zinc concentrate, 8,272,000 ounces of silver and substantial amounts of bismuth, cadmium and selenium. Geology plays an important role in these operations. The organization of detail geologic work in and around the Cerro mines was set up by John M. Boutwell in 1918 and a geology department was established in 1920. Growing through the years, the department technical staff now numbers over thirty men and. their work covers all phases of geological investigations. Many outstanding geologists of the past and present, too numerous to name here, have studied and contributed to the knowledge of the deposits and the ever growing list of Cerro "alumni" must rival that of any other mining organization. Numerous papers on the geology of Cerro's mines can be found in the technical literature and several doctoral theses have been presented on Cerro subjects as indicated in the attached bibliography, Specimens of Cerro's ores can be found in museum, college and university collections throughout the world. Yet, as with all mines and mining districts, the geologic knowledge of Cerro's deposits in Peru is being revised and added to constantly. This presentation cannot hope to cover adequately all the phases of the geology and mineralization. For a more complete background and discussion of the mine you are referred to the bibliography. Here I shall outline only briefly the more important geologic features and describe some of the newer developments of recent years The credit for the data presented here belongs to the many geologists who have worked or are now working for Cerro de Pasco Corporation, but I must assume sole responsibility for any omissions or variations in the interpretation of their work.

INTRODUCTION The use of precast concrete tunnel liners as the initial and final tunnel lining for transit systems has been a major consideration of designers for over three decades. The obvious benefit of building a tunnel that requires only a single pass in constructing the structural lining can provide the opportunity of saving both time and cost. This technique has had worldwide application in transit systems in London, Munich, Hong Kong, Toronto to name a few. In the United States precast liners were evaluated for use on the BART System in San Francisco in the early 1960's but did not provide sufficient confidence in the sealing capabilities available at that time. In 1976 it was decided to call for bids on the Lexington Market Tunnels in Baltimore with a precast concrete liner alternative for one of the tunnel drives. This option was selected by the owner and UMTA to provide a study evaluation for the benefit of the industry. HISTORY In 1983 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority began calling for a series of bids on soft ground tunnels on the Green Line, which included the option of using precast concrete tunnel liners first as an alternative to fabricated steel tunnel liners. This literature review discusses the role of the Albanian institutions, the natural resources industry, potential investors and stakeholders in order to provide a set of indicators that can help to monitor amelioration within sustainable development principles. A map with the potential prospects of the natural resources will be a first step in identifying the further potential for exploitation. Mineral resource policies and governance, sustainable processing and supply chain as well as environmental management information system are some of the crucial tools identified, that will help to set up the indicators and quantify the achievements in environmental management in Albania. Moreover, the integration of practices that will support institutional capacity building; follow-up practices; the mainstreaming of global environment into planning; and the compliance monitoring process will additionally improve the environmental situation in Albania. Aligning business strategy with environmental policy, socio-economic analysis, environmental auditing are decisive tools in order to provide the Albanian authorities with a clear overview of the economic costs and the social benefits for sustainable development.
