The extensive lead time to develop most Arizona copper deposits commenced with initial production efforts before the turn of the century, when the first attempts were made to recover gold and silver and later copper from the high-grade vein deposits of the territory. Each of these discoveries, prospects, and early operations had its own lead time and life cycle as economic production was attempted. Because prices of the metals fluctuated and the higher grade material was depleted, economics forced operations to close and companies to fail. Renewed interest in the property because of improved conditions, different interpretation of the geologic structure, or new promotional ability frequently resulted in the formation of yet another company to finance the exploration and, hopefully, the development of the property. This cycle of renewed activity and subsequent abandonment was and is common, accounting for many lead times and for the long period of time from the initial location of claims to large-scale production. In order to gain a perspective on the lead-time interval necessary to achieve development of a large-scale operation, the histories of several major Arizona mines were examined, rather than a simple listing of discovery and production dates of many mines to arrive at a statistical average. The Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel, and Twin Buttes properties were studied, and as much data as possible obtained on the Pinto Valley, Esperanza, Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park-Ithaca Peak properties.

1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. "This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."

Since 500 B.C. Mt. Penteli has been famous as white marble production site, which provided the birthstones for the construction of Athens Acropolis and Parthenon. The Aloula quarry belongs to ?Dionyssomarble S.A.?, a commercial and industrial marble company, which retreated after 1940. Disturbance in the site was minimal since then. In July of 1994 the reclamation started by a group of quarry workers from Paros, already familiar with traditional marble quarrying techniques, unchanged from antiquity to 1940. The project was complete in 1997. Our main objectives have been to show respect to the area and the art of people, to let nature guide our choices, to use only local stone as a construction means, to imitate the old construction rules and to turn the land use into amenity and civilization. Aloula quarry will become a site restored for amenity and civilisation, including ancient quarrying techniques. The restored quarry is already open to the public, though to a small number of visitors, and soon will become an amenity park and an open space museum of the ancient quarrying art.

Large volume sand plugs are placed in tunnels to stem underground explosions at the Atomic Energy Commision's Nevada Test Site. Placement through long, narrow accessways is like stemming coyote holes and blast chambers in mining and construction. Experience with several other methods showed that pipeline conveying could be preferable. Small scale tests justified predicting a placement rate of 20 y. p. h. at 1000 feet, with a modified gunite placer. The initial production trial placed over 2000 c. y. and was estimated to effect a small cost saving after paying for new equipment. Initial problems included duct replacement and supply delays, dust, and other personnel hazards. Operations analysis and SOP'S reduced delays during the second field trial, minimized hazards, doubled production. Re cent re search and operations analyses produced data on abrasion resistant ducts, identified minor equipment modifications which can improve production, developed techniques for impact compaction to 90% ?maximum? and for extension of the practical range to 2000 feet. Twenty-two illustrations include an air consumption-distance chart.

Voluminous deposits of commercial-grade phosphate occur in sedimentary strata in a 350,000 km2 (135,000 mi2) area of the middle Rocky Mountains of North America known as the Western Phosphate Field. The Permian marine strata that host the phosphate were deposited on the western margin of the North American craton and subsequently deformed, first by folding and thrust faulting of the Laramide orogeny, and then by Cenozoic Basin and Range block faulting. Carbonate fluorapatite is the primary phosphorus-bearing mineral. Organic matter is abundant in some strata, and both biogenic and non-biogenic pyrite are also present. Certain strata are enriched in several trace elements, especially in arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), uranium (U), and zinc (Zn). Phosphate has been mined from the Western Phosphate Field for nearly 100 years. Phosphate mining and processing constitutes the largest mineral industry of Idaho, producing more than $600 million in processed mineral value in 1997. Resource management agencies, phosphate producers, and others are concerned about the release of Se from phosphate mine wastes, especially at Maybe Canyon, and the potential effects that Se and other trace elements may have on the environment and on human health. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Team scientists initiated a multidisciplinary study of the Permian Phosphoria Formation and related rocks in the south- eastern Idaho sector of the Western Phosphate Field in response to a request by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Studies to date reveal that Se is present in several phases, including native Se, and in an as yet unidentified form, possibly an organo-Se compound. Selenium is also present in pyrite and sphalerite. Selenium concentrations range from 1.2 to greater than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) in samples collected from exposures of the Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Meade Peake) at Enoch Valley. The results suggest that Se concentrations vary spatially across strata and with depth, perhaps comparable to spatial variations of phosphate and organic carbon concentrations throughout the Western Phosphate Field demonstrated in previous studies. Some Se-enriched strata may be of adequate dimension to allow selective extraction during mining. Such units could be handled separately from the main ore process or waste streams and isolated in order to reduce the potential for release of Se to the environment

Ever since A Decade of Digital Computing in the Minerals Industry was published in 1969, mining men have expressed the need for an additional reference on computer methods. It was felt such a volume should spell out the "how to" of computer applications in the solution of their problems. Computers in the minerals industry will be 20 years old when the 1979 SME Fall Meeting and the 16th International Symposium on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM) take place jointly in Tucson, AZ. On such an occasion it was thought appropriate to publish an anniversary volume which reviewed current practices and projected what might prevail as computer methods for the future. Thus was born the idea to publish Computer Methods for the 80's. The first planning meeting for this volume took place in Las Vegas, NV, during the 1976 annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers. It quickly became evident that no single computer method existed to solve most mining problems; rather, mining computer methods are generally tailored to fit unique geologic, mining, and organizational conditions. Hence a format which included both the theory and practice for each of the computer applications was adopted for this volume.

A working hypothesis is presented herein mineral belts are split as all world oceans opened. Rather than plate tectonics, expansion is favored as the most recent expression of the sequence of convecting systems in the Earth's mantle. Throughout the geological record this sequence has produced similar mobile belts. This similarity lends itself to both stratigraphic classification and the theme of mineralization in mobile belts demonstrated by Y. A. Bilibin. Crustal evolution should, therefore, serve as an important guide in understanding Pacific mineral belts.

"Genoa is a very distinctive city located between mountains and the sea and infrastructural upgrading works often have to deal with the intersection of existing infrastructures. This is the case for the new railway tunnel construction between the stations of Brignole and Principe which under-cross two existing double-track tunnels in operation. The latter have been constructed with masonry bricks and the vertical distance between old and new tunnels is approximately 1m. Due to rock characteristics and the urban environment, stability and vibrations control are the main issues. Consolidation work with the fore-poling method and a specific sequence of excavation, primary lining and final lining support have been designed to assure stability and settlement control. A hard rock road-header has been used to assure vibration control. Finally, a real time monitoring has been implemented. The article presents monitoring and back-analysis results of the under-crossing of the existing tunnels. GENERAL LAYOUT OF WORKS The Genoa railway junction constitutes an integral part of the Ventimiglia-Genoa-Novara-Milan railway line route and it is included amongst the railway systems of the Tyrrhenian-Northern European multi-modal corridor (corridor of the two seas or corridor VII Genoa-Rotterdam). The main aims of the project concern the upgrading of the existing lines and the separation of the long-distance passenger and freight traffic flows from those of a regional and metropolitan type. The project includes: •,Completion of the connection with the port of Genoa Voltri and the Italy-France coastal route. •,Interconnection with the future Terzo Valico dei Giovi mountain pass route towards Milan. •,Upgrading of the Genoa Voltri – Genoa Brignole main line to four/six tracks. Rearrangement of the systems at the Genoa Voltri, Genoa Sampierdarena and Genoa Brignole Stations, reorganisation of the services in the Genoa Terralba area and interchangeability with the metropolitan system complete the design activities. The contract which includes civil and technology works is divided into four construction lots (ref. Figure 1):"

The rare earths in elemental form are required for a variety of scientific and technological purposes. They are not easily obtained in this form, due to the great chemical stability of the rare-earth compounds and the strong tendency of elemental metals to react with everything they come in to contact with, especially at high temperatures. Beginning in the 1950s, when sufficient quantities of separated rare earths became available, as the result of intense research and development, three processing routes were developed to accomplish the preparation of all 16 naturally occurring rare-earth elements. They are chemical reduction of the halide intermediates, the oxides and electrochemical reduction of chlorides and oxide-fluoride mixtures. Not all the processes are effective with all the rare earths. In spite of the celebrated similarity of trivalent rare earths, the physical properties of individual rare-earth elements are sufficiently different that a variety of techniques are required for their preparation. The development of reduction processes for the rare-earth metals are covered in this paper, with focus on the oxide reduction routes. The strong reliance of effective reduction processes on the fundamental science of reduction reactions is highlighted.

Booster fans have been extensively used in underground mines throughout the world. In the United Kingdom, S. Africa, Germany, and other countries, many non-coal and coal mines employ booster fans. These fans help to reduce air leakage, to provide an improved flow distribution and to reduce the overall cost of mine ventilation. Although booster fans have not been used in coal mines in the United States, a recent survey indicated that many coal mines would install booster fans if they were allowed to do so. With the inclusion of coal mines, the use of booster fans in underground mines is expected to increase substantially in order to maintain air quality and quantity requirements. Several techniques are used, with varying degrees of success, in determination of booster fan locations in an underground ventilation network. These techniques include linear programming, critical-path crashing, CPM together with cutset operations, the out-of-kilter method, and simulation techniques. This paper provides a brief comparison of these techniques, and reports on ongoing research for an improved methodology for the determination of booster fan locations.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. Mining economics courses have been taught in Europe for more than two centuries and in the United States for most of this century. They are the mineral industry's version of engineering economics offered by industrial engineering departments. In the 1930s, mineral economics first appeared in American mining schools. This subject goes beyond the deposit and the mine. It examines the economic aspects of mineral resources in general and the individual mineral industries in particular. In 1947, the first degrees in mineral economics were granted in the United States. There are mining and geological engineers who specialize in mining economics. But it has rarely become a separate degree program. Rather, in this country and several others, a graduate student in a mining department or school will include economics in his course work. Then the person writes a thesis or dissertation on a mining economics topic. One exception is found in Moscow at the Department of Geoeconomics of the Moscow Geological and Prospecting Institute (MGPI). To place this program in perspective, some background is needed on education in the Soviet Union.

Compound lognormal distributions serve as new generalized distribution laws for analyzing and estimating ore value distributions or related properties such as the average ore grade. These models are an alternative to the well known lognormal distribution. They are the translation of general geological constraints on the genesis of the deposit cumulated in suitable statistical properties. In this paper a maximum likelihood framework is established for estimating the parameters of such laws or parameter functions thereof. It is shown that under certain conditions maximum likelihood estimation is accurate and efficient in estimating the mean value even when relatively few samples are available. The method is based on a numerical maximization of the likelihood function of these models given the data. Confidence limits on these estimates are set up using resampling techniques such as the bootstrap. By this a complete methodology is presented for inference on ore grade distributions such as is shown in an example of gold data from the Merriespruit mine (South Africa) and the diamond size distribution of the Bougban deposit (Guinea).

The time-worn adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" was never more applicable than when used in reference to coal mine safety. Many individuals have dedicated many hours to developing effective accident prevention programs, and much has been accomplished. Each production escalation, however, creates new hazards and safety problems which need special study and research. It is a never ending cyle. To study the progress of coal-mine safety is to raise memories of many individuals who have been dedicated to removing the hazards that have developed with increased productivity and deeper penetration into the earth for coal. Some vivid examples of this dedication are the works of the men who pioneered the use of the safety lamp and the use of rock dust in mining.

The first cement plant of TITAN Cement Co was founded in Elefsis in 1902. It was the first cement industrial facility to operate in the Balkans and in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Currently have four cement plants in Greece producing 5.4 million tons per annum, and 25 ready-mixed concrete sites producing 1.4 million m3 annually. It has a total of 20 quarries, 14 of which are producing materials used in the making of cement while the remaining six produce aggregates used in the production of ready-mixed concrete. All plants in Greece are accredited for ISO 14001. The restoration of quarries began in 1976 at the company?s limestone quarry of the Patras plant, and was soon extended to all quarries. At that time, a department responsible for all environmental issues was established. To date, over 700.000 shrubs and trees have been planted and maintained at quarries, plants and ready-mixed concrete facilities, while over 100,000 trees have been donated to municipalities, communities, customers and to the Greek state.

About 45% to 50% of the coal mined in the United States passes through coal preparation plants. East of the Mississippi River, this number increases to about 75% to 80%. Although the cost for coal preparation is worthwhile to some, the coal industry faces the challenges of continuing downward pressure on the price of coal and the impact of new environmental regulations. Coal preparation is an effective process that achieves 75% to 80% ash reduction, 15% to 80% trace element reduction and 85% to 90% Btu recovery. It is less effective for pyrite reduction (35% to 70%) and on-line operating time (40% to 60%). It also suffers from obsolete control systems. In coal preparation, raw coal is modified to a more preferred form to enable its use. The methods used to achieve this modification must be cost-effective and appropriate to the raw coal, the scale of production and the end-user requirements.

Conventional iron ore balling circuits exhibit undesirable surging behavior which is known to result from uncontrolled occurrence of the mechanisms of nucleation, coalescence and layering. This study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism of pellet growth by layering. Several laboratory experiments have been carried out to delineate the effect of feed moisture content and feed quantity. This paper presents an analysis of the experimental results and a simple model to describe the layering process.

Pit slope designs at Nickel Plate Mine have used relatively steep interim and final wall slopes of 60 degrees overall. The rock is unusually strong and tough with most discontinuity sets being steeply dipping. An integrated program of monitoring and drainage has been used. Stopes of large extent which are generally unsupported occur on the property. For the most part, no deterioration of the stability of the stopes has occurred over the last 30 or more years. Mining methods through these areas have used a combination of fill s placed via VCR drop raises and crater blasting of the backs. One of the major challenges in mining through the stope areas is to maintain slope stability conditions and to reduce dilution of the higher value ore zones occurring immediately around the stope areas.
