With prevailing assumptions that plentiful domestic coal reserves will be available for meeting our Nation’s expectations for on future low emission, coal-fired power plants, major government funding in Clean Coal Technology, and Carbon Sequestration Programs continues to be aggressive. However, after more than a decade of cutbacks in funding for domestic coal-related programs and personnel, there is a growing concern that adequate quantification and qualification of our Nation’s coal reserves is increasingly being compromised. This paper will define the growing concerns and dichotomies that continue to increase, and address the decreasing number of fossil fuel mapping and assessment programs by Federal and State programs.

Floor heave events in underground mining often happen suddenly and cause risk to workers and equipment. Reducing the risk of floor heave must be addressed in mining layout design. To improve that design one must understand the significant parameters that are correlated to the occurrence of floor heave. To accomplish that goal, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed a numerical study using FLAC3D, taking advantage of its strain softening and ubiquitous joint capabilities to better simulate the floor heave and caving mechanisms involved at an actual mine site.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued Program Information Bulletin P09-03in April of 2008, providing formal guidance on using programs that model the redistribution of stress during underground mining of coal. A key part of this guidance is visual observation and mapping of ground conditions. If a correlation between ground conditions and model output can be established, the model is considered to be verified, and can be used to guide mine design in similar ground. A simple scale is recommended for ranking observed roof, rib, and floor conditions. This paper discusses optimization and implementation of a ground condition rating scheme in the gateroads of a deep underground longwall coal mine. Roughly 80% of each gateroad length deteriorated in a fairly uniform manner. However, this manner varied between gateroads, as did pillar size. The implementation of a ground condition mapping program, similar to that recommended in PIB 09-03, was successful in characterizing the ground response to mining in gateroads of a longwall coal mine.

The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

In April 1984 a subsidence depression formed directly beneath a two-story frame residence, near Linton, IN, causing 2 ft of separation between the floor and walls, and damaging both the foundation and interior of the building. The Office of Surface Mining undertook the rehabilitation of the area under its emergency response program. This paper describes the investigation performed to determine the cause, severity, and extent of the problem. Abandoned mine workings were found approximately 55 to 60 ft below the house. Based on the findings, remedial measures were prescribed. An abatement program consisting of grouting the mine voids was recommended, and specifications prepared. These were implemented, and the area has been successfully stabilized.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

Grouting is a frequently utilized remedy in the planning and implementation of ground improvement and tunnel rehabilitation practice. The state-of-art grouting application used for Chicago’s McCook Reservoir project offers a unique alternative to the tunneling industry for pre-excavation grouting as well as tunnel rehabilitation, rescue and post-excavation ground improvements. The McCook Reservoir project included a computerized grouting control and data collection system for a precise and highly effective groundwater cutoff in fractured dolomites. By using balanced and stabilized grout mixes, the effective permeability of the rock mass was reduced over two orders of magnitude to less than 0.1 Lugeon by installing a double line grout curtain. The stable grout mix designs allowed high pressure and effective grouting at depths up to 125 m (410 ft).

Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. This paper presents a simplified computerized method for the prediction of maximum subsidence and the subsidence profile for the Appalachian Coal Basin using the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method. Several case histories are cited to demonstrate the appropriateness of the predictive method. In addition, sample runs and a detailed listing of the computer program is provided. Other popular subsidence prediction methods are discussed and compared with the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method.

Online education is not new. During the last decade, it has reached the stage where many universities offer a variety of courses, degrees and programs without any associated residency requirements. The most successful of the online universities, University of Phoenix, offers hundreds of accredited programs for close to 100,000 students throughout the world (www.phoenix.edu). Online education is considered to be a valid equivalent to traditional, classroom-based education. It is best suited to the needs of mature students with full-time jobs and a desire to deepen their knowledge. While most of the e-business has experienced severe setbacks during the last two years, e-education shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, the number of students and institutions offering online education keeps growing. The value of e-education associated expenditures was expected to reach $300 billion in 2001 (Sanoff,2001), making it a serious and mature industry.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the purpose of mine ventilation has been defined as diluting, rendering harmless, and sweeping away hazardous gases which may accumulate in the mine workings. In addition, the ventilation sys- tem must keep the mine air as close as possible to the composition of the outside air in order to provide a healthy environment for mineworkers and to prolong the useful life of mine equipment. When plans are being developed for opening a new mine, sound engineering dictates that a calculated estimate be made of both the maximum air quantity requirement and the accept- able mine pressure (head) loss related to the under- ground layout and projections. For efficient mine ventilation, the two problem areas that demand constant attention are (1) the control of fugitive air (through short circuiting or leakage) and (2) the provision of ample airway capacity. Fugitive air is that quantity of air which enters the mine but short-circuits the mine ventilation system through improperly constructed stoppings, doors, overcasts, etc.; it represents an investment in power consumption (to move the air by the fan) while providing little, if any, return on the investment. Typically, efficient mines are those that can deliver 50% of the air handled by their fans to the working faces. Paying close attention to a new mine's ventilation system at the outset can provide numerous benefits during the later stages of mine development. It has often been noted that the main cause of trouble in many mine ventilation systems can be found within a radius of 2500 ft from the fan installation. Ample airway capacity is essential to maintain the mine's head loss within manageable limits. Similar to an industrial ventilation setting, the mine's headings are the ductwork for the handling of air. The difference between normal industrial ventilation and mine ventilation is apparent when more capacity is needed; a plant can install new or larger ductwork, but it is difficult for a mine to install new entries or enlarge existing entries. Air velocities are usually maintained under 800 fpm to limit the stirring up of dust in the intakes. With this in mind, it is usually simple to estimate the number of entries required in the ventilation system. The problem that often arises, though, is when the system's capacity is overestimated and the required head loss to achieve the desired quantity is excessive. Experience has shown that problems are often encountered when the mine's condition requires much more than three inches of water gage to ventilate the mine on a day-to-day basis. Thus, if proper attention is not paid to these parameters in the preplanning and initial development of a new mine, it may take an extremely high water gage to achieve the ultimate quantity. This chapter will not delve deeply into the theory of mine ventilation; many other books have been writ- ten on that subject. Instead, the following sections will point out the important considerations that should take place before the development of a mine ventilation system, as they relate to normal industry practice. FUNDAMENTALS OF AIRFLOW Volume Versus Water Gage The common method of measuring ventilation pressure is in terms of inches of water gage (wg); one inch of water corresponds to a pressure of 5.2 psf (pounds per square foot). Further, airflow follows a square-law relationship between volumes and pressures where, as shown in the previous section, a doubling of quantity requires a quadrupling of pressure. Table 1 shows how heads and quantities are related. Using Table 1, it is readily apparent that, for the same mining conditions, an increase in pressure from one inch wg to three inches wg results in only 34,640 cfm when the initial quantity is 20,000 cfm. Pressure Losses Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are caused by friction between the heading walls and the air stream and by shock losses due to abrupt changes of the air stream caused by obstructions. The common pressure-loss formula for mine ventilation is: [ ] where H is the pressure loss in inches of water gage, K is the coefficient of friction, L is the length of the airway in feet, 0 is the airway perimeter in feet, V is the air velocity in feet per minute, and A is the cross-sectional area of the airway in square feet. Table 2 lists the US Bureau of Mines schedule of friction factors (K) for mine airways. Recent research indicates that the values of K are slightly less for coal mines than those presented in the USBM Schedule, and Table 3 should be consulted in this instance. It should be

Our subject, "Safety, Legal, and Contracting," is a range of topics which covers a broad spectrum, but is obviously Intended to focus our attention upon certain particular aspects of tunnel problems. These are all fascinating and complex subjects, and others are much more qualified to discuss to discuss the fine points involved. Put after some 45 years' involvement as an inspector, engineer, contracting officer, and especially for the last 22 years as a contractor's estimator and manager, I have developed some strong and definite convictions to share with you. I hope it will serve to get you started thinking. My first tunnel experience was in a soft ground tunnel which was dug by hand, literally. The crown or arch back was taken out, a pebble at a time, by bare hand. The face was constantly breast-boarded, and the mucking was all done by hand shovel. My first rock tunnel was drilled by hand held drifters from the muck pile. Since then, most tunneling techniques have improved greatly. The jumbos, booms, muckers, and moles have taken over many of the back-breaking chores, and reduced the manpower requirements.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

Real copper prices during the past several decades display two striking characteristics. First, they are highly volatile. Within a year or two, copper prices can rise or fall by 30% or more. Second, over the longer term, they are falling. Indeed, since 1970, the secular trend price for copper is down by more than 50%. Figure 1 highlights both of these characteristics. It shows the average annual US producer price for copper since 1970 measured in constant 2001 US dollars. While the London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price is not shown, it and the US producer price have for some time moved more or less together. So pronounced short-run fluctuations around a significant long-run decline describe copper prices, not only in the United States, but around the world.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.

At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.
