"Iron ore for alternate iron processes concerns alternate iron products designed for use in EAF (electric arc furnace) steelmaking processes. These alternate iron products include both DRI (direct reduced iron), HBI (hot briquetted iron) and merchant pig iron. Merchant pig iron can be produced in conventional blast furnaces, mini blast furnaces (including charcoal BF's) or novel processes such as RHF/SAF (rotary hearth furnace/submerged arc furnace) such as Iron Dynamics or RHF such as Mesabi Nugget. These novel processes are coal based and can use iron ore concentrates or recycled steel plant oxides. The blast furnace processes can use conventional feed materials: pellets, sinter, lump ore and coke. However, DRI and HBI processes are predominantly pellet based but require DR grade pellets that are low enough in acidic gangue (SiO2 and Al2O3) to avoid additional expense in the EAF process This paper will focus on the quality and availability of DR grade pellets for NAFTA DRI/HBI plants but also concentrates for fines based processes and feed materials for merchant pig iron production. INTRODUCTION This paper will outline alternative (to the blast furnace) competitive ironmaking processes and process routes. Within each section the types of iron ore to be utilized will be discussed. Before discussing some of the details of these processes, it may be appropriate to review some definitions and commonly used terms within this industry. DefinitionsDirect Reduction: Reduce iron oxide to metallic iron without melting. Unreduced ore compounds remain as undesirable oxides • Direct Reduced Iron: Iron oxide feedstock exits in same form as entered (pellets in, pellets out; lumps in, lumps out) • Hot Briquetted Iron: DRI that has been hot (1200°F, 650°C) briquetted to a high density pillow shaped briquette • Hot Metal: Molten iron in liquid form, above 2500°F, 1370°C • Pig Iron: Solid product of the iron blast furnace • Residuals: Undesirable elements such as copper, nickel, chromium, tin, sulfur, molybdenum and phosphorus • Gangue: Rock minerals in the iron ore such as silica (SiO2), alumina (A2O3), calcia (CaO), magnesia (MgO). These remain in the oxide form in DR processes. • Reduction: Fe2O3 + 3 CO = 2 Fe + 3CO2 2 Fe2O3 + 3 H2 = 2 Fe + 3H2O (Fe2O3 > Fe3O4 > FeO > Fe)"

The continued decline In the production of synthetic soda ash (sodium carbonate) due to high costs and associated environmental factors, has improved the world demand for natural soda ash. The largest resource of natural soda ash is the mineable trona deposits of Southwestern Wyoming. Wyoming trona, a lacustrine evaporite of Eocene Age, is mined by five producers which process over 90% of the United States and 20% of the worlds soda ash. Total world consumption of soda ash is forecast to grow 1% annually. Increased expansion into foreign market's is absorbing the domestic overcapacity.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of automatic water sprinkler systems in the extinguishment of incipient conveyor belt fires under ventilated conditions. Large-scale experiments were conducted using a double strand conveyor belt configuration. Standard response, pendent-type sprinklers, with activation temperatures of 100°C, were installed above and between the two strands of belting, in accordance with Federal standards for sprinkler system installations in belt drive areas. Experiments at airflows of 1.1 and 4.6 m/s showed that the sprinklers activated later, the peak heat release rate was larger, and more betting was consumed at the higher airflow. In experiments with 74°C, fast response, directional sprinklers, the sprinklers activated at the same heat release rate for both high and low airflows, but the peak heat release rate and amount of bett consumed was slightly higher at the lower airflow. Experiments were also conducted with 100 °C, standard pendent sprinklers installed above the top belt, in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 123 for sprinkler system installations in conveyor belt drive areas in underground coal mines. In these experiments, the heat release rate and amount of betting consumed was larger at the higher airflow.

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. INTRODUCTION On April 14, 1994, the joint venture of Kiewit Construction Company and Kenny Construction Company was awarded a 76 million dollar contract for the construction of the New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels in Washington D.C. The Notice to Proceed was given on May16, 1994 and scheduled completion is September 1997. This project is one of five contracts for the Mid-City E Line as part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)Greenbelt Route. Once completed, the Mid-City E Line subway tunnels will connect service between the U Street-Cardozo and Fort Totten stations (See Figure 1). The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project consists of approximately 6800 feet of twin single track subway tunnels, three vertical shafts, associated utility work and comprehensive restoration work. Section E4b involved two methods of tunneling along the project alignment. The first method consisted of the well known soft ground open face shield driven tunnel and the second method consisted of tunnels driven using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) . The NATM section of twin tunnels begins at the Buchanan Vent Shaft and proceeds approximately 2630 feet under Rock Creek Cemetery, including the Farragut Emergency Access Shaft and connects approximately 390 feet beyond to the existing Fort Totten running tunnels (See Figure 2). Special considerations had to be given to the portion of the tunnel alignment which passed beneath Rock Creek Cemetery. The analyses and subsequent selection of the tunnel support system were based on anticipated geological conditions and the sensitive tunnel alignment. The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project was the second soft ground NATM project in Washington D.C. The first, by no coincidence, was completed at the adjacent Fort Totten Station and Running Tunnels Project by Mergentime/Hochtief, AJV. Currently, on a nearby WMATA jobsite, the J.F. Shea Construction Company has started a third NATM soft ground tunnel. Formally, a mathematical model could be defined as: A set of equations whose solution will approximate the response of a physical process or system to a set of stimuli which appear as parameters in the equations. The purpose of a mathematical model is to permit the rationalization of experience to proceed by simulation rather than by physical experimentation. In the application of digital computer control to an industrial process, the mathematical model of the process (subsequently called the process model) is needed to calculate the present process performance from the measured variables and to predict the response of the process to a control change. Functionally, the cardinal element in process model development is a concise set of control objectives. These, besides implicitly defining the boundaries of the system to be modeled, will determine the accuracy demanded of the model its nature: dynamic or steady-state, and so forth, The objectives should explicitly define what process efficiencies, production rates, qualities are to lie within the scope of the computer control project, thereby providing a basis for simplifying assumptions in the development of the model. This requirement, a limited set of control objectives, is so often disregarded in formulating industrial control problems that its repetition can scarcely be avoided.

Software for coal blending has gained a lot of recent attention as micro-computer programs have come on the market. Some of this software is appropriate and some is not. This paper looks at the types of models being used and points out the strengths and weaknesses of each. Recommendations are then made concerning the level of detail required for these programs, relating this concern to the various ways in which coal companies are using these programs. A checklist of company requirements for these programs and available pro-gram-features provides an aid in matching the program to the company.

The 1980s marked a boom in gold mining and exploration in the United States particularly in the state of Nevada which lifted this country to second place in the world, after South Africa, in gold production. With this boom came many positive aspects such as increased employment, increased investment, increased payment of federal and local taxes, higher purchases of goods and services and higher expenditures on social and economic uplift programs. With the arrival of Minera Yanacocha in Peru in 1992, the gold mining boom shifted to this country which has lifted Peru to first place in Latin America in 1996 and ninth place in the world in gold production. As in the case of the United States in the 1980s, similar positive impacts are being felt throughout Peru in the 1990s.

Those who have had an occasion to apply geostatistics to the estimation of ore reserves are familiar with the conventional approaches of estimating average grade of quality values for arrays of regular grid squares or blocks. Further, the technology to perform geostatistical analysis and prediction for irregular two-dimensional areas has been available in a practical, readily useable form for some time. However, the generalization of this technology into three dimensions has been hampered by lack of a suitable geometrical characterization for realistic, three dimensional shapes and volumes. The extension of these estimation techniques into three dimensions has now been made possible by a successful integration of the volume modelling capabilities of 3D Component Modelling with proven 3D Geostatistical Techniques. The result is a powerful new technique for mineral ore reserves estimation in a practical, useable form. The technique allows direct geostatistical estimation of grade and quality values for precisely defined, irregular, realistic, geological, and mining shapes or volumes. This paper describes the two technologies, their integration and their application in practice to the estimation of mineral ore reserves. The paper closes with a discussion of the benefits provided by the new approach, in terms of accuracy, efficiency and practicality.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3,000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts; and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s). INTRODUCTION Roof bolting machines are used to drill bolt holes into the roof of an underground mine at specified patterns and to install roof bolts to secure the roof from falling. At times, the roof bolting machine is also used to install rib bolts; however, only the roof bolting operation was considered in this simulation. Though the roof bolting operation drastically improved the safety of miners from roof falls, some roof bolter operators are experiencing health problems associated with respirable dust. Based on recent statistics [1], following a low point in the late 1990s where the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) in miners with 25 years or more tenure was approximately 5%, CWP now exceeds 10% for miners with 25 years or more of tenure. In central Appalachia (Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia), 20.6% of long-tenured miners have CWP and 4.5% have progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of CWP. CWP, also known as black lung, is an occupational respiratory disease that has no cure and can ultimately be fatal. The only way to prevent the incidence of black lung is to eliminate miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Current U.S. regulations require that the overall respirable dust concentration to be 1.5 mg/m3 or less for a full-shift sampling if respirable quartz is not present; otherwise, the standard is 10 divided by the percent quartz (not to exceed the 1.5 mg/m3 respirable dust standard) [2, 3].

In South Carolina and Georgia an area about 20 miles wide situated near the inner margin of the Coastal Plain and extending from the vicinity of Columbia, S.C. southwestward about 180 miles to the vicinity of Macon, Georgia is the principal kaolin-producing area of the world. It is especially important as the world's major source of clay used for paper coating. Essentially all of the land known or likely to be productive of quality kaolin in this area is now owned or controlled by producing companies. The least-fully developed portion is that in the vicinity of Wrens, Georgia which has been explored and developed since 1961. For the two decades following the end of world war II, demand for kaolin increased at approximately twice the rate for other industrial minerals. From 1945 to 1965 production increased four-fold. Since 1965 the rate of increase has been less, but the outlook now is that production and demand will double at least once again before the year 2000. A substantial part of this increased demand has come, and will continue to come, from industrial development, especially in the paper industry, outside the United States. The general effect, in addition to a continuing increase in production in the U.S., will be to cause: 1. Intensive research for development of more effective and more economical methods of beneficiation; 2. Concerted research effort to find an economical way of modifying high-viscosity kaolin so that it can be used for paper coating; 3. More active exploration in the U.S. and overseas, especially for deposits to supply the foreign markets; 4. More intensive study of the geological factors responsible for the accumulation of commercial deposits of kaolin; 5. Some modest rise in price, relative to the cost of other industrial minerals. The effect on kaolin producing region of Georgia and South Carolina will be to cause: 1. Working of progressively lower-grade deposits; 2. An increase in the acceptable thickness of overburden; 3. Mining of deposits farther down-dip, the use of which is now inhibited by large volumes of groundwater; 4. Increased threat of invasion of the kaolin in industry's market by substitute materials; 5. A substantial increase in concern over environmental factors; 6. More attention to be paid to the large opportunity offered for mining of silica sand and other co-products.

The need for a separate ventilation department within the management team was recognized by the management of U. S. Pipe and Foundry before the company was purchased by Jim Walter Corporation in January, 1970. Because the coal beds of the deep underground coal properties owned by Jim Walter Resources lay 1300 to 2200 feet below the surface, efficient mine ventilation practices are essential through shaft openings varying from 16 to 22 feet in diameter. The extremely high methane gas quantity indicated to be in the coal bed because of the depth of cover and documented by various U. S. Bureau of Mines tests and demonstrated by early mining proved the need to implement this early management decision. At U. S. Pipe and Foundry mine ventilation was a function of the Mining Engineering Department with ventilation personnel assigned to the mine receiving their day to day work assignments from the mine manager or mine foreman. At Jim Walter Resources, the General Manager - Ventilation reports to the Senior Vice President, Mining Engineering, who reports directly to the President, Mining Division, Figure 1 (Company Organization Chart). Position descriptions are static; however positions are dynamic and consequently the degree of emphasis of specific duties and responsibilities change depending not only upon the aptitude of the individual performing the job but also upon his ability to meet the needs of his supervisors; and ultimately upon his ability to react to the economic forces directing our society. The following describes the duties and responsibilities of the General Manager - Ventilation, Figure 2.

It took me nearly nine months to make the move from Arizona to Berkeley, opening an office and planning our new home. While I was in Warren Dorothy had rented two rooms for my office In the new California Commercial Union Building at 315 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. She made such a good choice that this remained my address for more than 50 years Dorothy had also looked over many lots In Berkeley, and took an option on the one that pleased her the most. It was a beautiful lot, or rather three, as we took three lots to protect our view. The only possible drawback was that it was in a new district and there were only two houses within two blocks. No one could tell how the area would develop but we liked it so much that we bought the lots on the spot and signed a note to guarantee payment. Dorothy's good judgment was shown by the fact that after 50 years we are still glad to be living on the same property, at 168 Southampton Avenue. We arranged a meeting with the distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck-and employed him to design a house for us. Dorothy spent most of her time with Maybeck planning the house and an attached studio for her, and she later wrote an amusing essay on her dealings with Maybeck. They were so successful that even now we could not think of any changes we would have wanted. It took several months to design a house that suited Dorothy and would fit on our hilltop. I was glad to overcome some of Maybeck's scorn for "only an engineer" by showing how, by rotating the studio addition 45º, it would fit the lot without serious excavation. Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) coals of certain areas of the Illinois and Forest City Basins contain epigenetic sphalerite and associated minerals in veins, clastic dikes, cleat, and other small-scale structural features. The presence of sphalerite in these coals records information about the geology of coals and coal basins, and represents a potential source for zinc as a byproduct of coal production. Origin of Sphalerite in Coal The origin of sphalerite in coal suggested by Cobb (1) involves sphalerite precipitation from zinc-bearing ?Na-Ca-Cl brines upon contact with sources of sulfur in the coal bed, e.g., pyrite, H2S, and organic sulfur. These brines were essentially at the temperature of the host coals as determined by fluid-inclusion thermometry and vitrinite-reflectance studies. The migration of these brines into coal beds may have been caused by compaction of sediments due to continued sediment loading of the coal basins. Zones of high permeability such as sandstones and the coals themselves presumably acted as conduits for the movement of the brines. The open spaces where sphalerite was deposited resulted from minor deformation associated with differential compaction and cleat formation enhanced by volume shrinkage during coalification.

ShovelSense is a complete solution for bulk ore sorting at the mine face that combines robust shovel bucket mounted X-ray fluorescence sensors, with real-time material classification, fleet management integration and supporting cloud-based data infrastructure, to ensure each truck always goes to the right destination. Correct truck destinations are a challenge in many current mining settings because the material classification of a truck, which is the key input into the truck destination, is often based on estimates at block resolution (~20x20x15m), with limited adjustment for blast movement and mixing. In this contribution, we present a geostatistical, data driven approach to estimate the potential value of bulk ore sorting at the mine-face for seven open pit mines. The approach is premised on the assumption that truck loads within blocks follow a simple gamma distribution. Standard ore control data from the seven mines have been used to estimate the potential bulk sorting value at these operations and ShovelSense-integrated dispatch datasets have been used to validate these estimates for specific benches on which ShovelSense operated. ShovelSense results validate the ore control data-based value predictions and show how at mine-face bulk ore sorting value varies between distinct deposit types. In general, deposit types that have higher bulk ore grade contrasts, display more potential ShovelSense value. The manuscript concludes with the limitations and opportunities of applying the proposed value estimation approach to evaluate at mine-face bulk ore sorting opportunities for open pit operations.

In this work, we propose to implement machine learning methods for the automatic classification of mining-related seismic data. The approach retained for the classification is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which has been tested and applied to two different mining datasets: the active ore mine of Garpenberg (Sweden), currently under exploitation, and the abandoned coal mine of Gardanne (France), where mining stopped in 2003. The first step of the approach consists in creating a well classified (manually) database of seismic signals separated in different classes as a function of the seismic sources. The selected database is then divided into two groups: train, containing the 70% of the signals, and test, which contains the remaining 30% of the signals within the selected database. The learning phase of the algorithm consists in creating a classification model based on the train group, which is further validated on the test group. The application of CNN for the automatic classification of Garpenberg and Gardanne seismic data shows, respectively, that about 88% and 98% of the seismic events of the two sites can be properly classified. These results demonstrate that machine learning could be a powerful tool for microseismic monitoring in mining and post-mining environments, which could be further extended to the whole automatic processing of seismic data, including signal’s classification as well as microseismic event’s localization.
