Molecular design plays an important role in development of new flotation reagents. Group electronegativity calculation is a main method of molecular design. It is commonly used in calculating the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance of reagents, particularly in designing chain length of flotation reagents for located minerals. But there is a limit to group electronegativity method. The method can only apply to those of [Ø]known straight-chain compounds ([Ø] is the hydrophobic energy of each -CH2- , determined by experiment). In this Paper, we propose another new calculation method: fragment method of flotation reagent. The method could be used as a supplement of group electronegativity method to design and calculate flotation reagents without any limitation. With the fragment method, we can calculate the hydrophilic-hydrophobic performance of any known or unknown reagents including those complicate structure compounds such as cyclic, branch, heterocyclic and so on by summing the appropriate structural elements (fragment). The principle, calculation stages and some results of designing new-type flotation reagents by fragment method are presented in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). LKAB owns and operates two of the largest underground mines in the world in Northern Sweden. In Malmberget, with a production capacity of about 30,000 t/day of iron ore, the current main 815 m haulage level is rapidly approaching the end of Its life and plans are being made for its replacement on the 1000 m level. Due to the separation of the orebodies, trucks have been chosen for transporting the ore from the orepasses to the crushers. The trucks currently in use have a capacity of 120 tons. To increase the efficiency of the loaded haul, the new main level will have a favorable slope from the drawpoint locations to the crushers. From the new level the crushed ore will be transported by conveyor to the 815 m level for hoisting to the surface. The paper discusses the planned mining and transportation system.

Until about three years ago, Asarco's copper business consisted predomi¬nantly of custom smelting of ores and concentrates produced by other mining companies. Since then, the company has been transforming itself into a fully integrated producer in copper mining, smelting, and refining. In doing this, Asarco has lowered its costs and restructured its operations and finances. Now, Asarco hopes to complete this process by spending $260 million over the next three years, to expand and modernize its copper facilities and boost production by some 40%. The capital spending program includes: • $130 million at the Ray mine about 113 km (70 miles) north of Tucson, AZ, to expand mining capacity and install an in-pit ore crusher, mill, and concentrator; • $100 million, to expand the mining capacity at the Mission Complex located south of Tucson, AZ, and refurbish the adjacent, idle Pima mill and concentrator. (Asarco had earlier exercised an option to purchase the Pima mill for about $6 million); and • $30 million, to modernize the copper smelter in El Paso, TX, with a new flash smelting process. The new program is in addition to a recently completed first-phase expansion of the Mission mine, mill, and concentrator. This $13 million debottlenecking of existing operations in¬creased production capacity by 46% or 24.5 kt/a (27,000 stpy), to 79 kt/a (87,000 stpy) of copper in concentrates. In addition, a previously an¬nounced $12 million expansion program at the Ray mine is scheduled for completion in early 1990. It will expand mill capacity, to offset the anticipated effects of increasing ore hardness as the pit deepens. Ray produces 68 kt/a (75,000 stpy) of copper in concen¬trates and an additional 36 kt/a (40,000 stpy) of electrowon copper. By 1992, when Asarco's expanded and modernized copper facilities are operating at capacity, the company's mine output will have increased by 67 kt/a (74,000 stpy), to 263 kt/a (290,000 stpy) of contained copper. That will be enough to provide all of the feed required for Asarco's two copper smelters - by then, both of them modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Asarco's expansion and modernization program will further reduce costs and provide added assurance that the company's copper business will be profitable at the bottom of the cycle, according to Chairman Richard de J. Osborne The Ray mine portion of the new program will include construction at the mine of a new mill and concentrator, with a capacity of 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) of ore. These new semiautogenous grinding mills and large capacity flotation cells will augment the present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) concentrator located 29 km (18 miles) away, in Hayden, AZ. A 29 km (18 mile) pipeline will be built to carry tailings in slurry form from the new Ray mill to the present tailings pond. Concentrates from the new facility will be shipped by rail to Asarco's Hayden copper smelter. Ray's present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) crusher, adjacent to the open-pit, will be replaced by a 54.4 kt/d (60,000 stpd), portable in-pit crusher and conveying system. This will reduce the more expensive ore haulage by truck. The Ray project is scheduled for completion by 1992. It will increase the mine's annual output of copper in concentrates by an additional 33.5 kt/a (37,000 st), to 102 kt (112,000 st). And the project could mean an additional 400 jobs at the 730 employee Ray operation. Work at the Mission Complex involves reactivation of the Pima mill and concentrator and expansion of mine output sufficient to provide ore to both the Pima mill and the present Mission mill. In 1985, Asarco purchased the Pima mine, which occupies one end of the Mission pit. The development of new processes has to follow "best practice" rules in order to be technically and economically as efficient as possible. However, innovations, new process routes and new rules are continuously emerging to minimize financial risk and maximize environmental compliance. Process simulation, which offers a complete overview of the flowsheet, makes it possible to cope with this new challenge-minimizing waste production and water consumption. Furthermore, simulation provides an estimate, at the early stage, of the cost of alternative technical routes. Four examples involving biotechnological circuits are presented, both at the design and commissioning stages.

According to general guidelines, deposits suitable for surface mining can be divided into two basic categories: horizontal or flat-bedded deposits and inclined or dip-buried deposits. A series of mathematical models for surface mine long-term planning (SMLTP) has been developed and can be used for any kind of deposit. The basic theory and methodology of the models are oriented- graph simulation which combines graph and network theory with a systems simulation technique to form a new approach. From the viewpoint of surface mining and long-term plan modeling, the main differences between the two categories of deposits are analyzed, an important algorithm is put forward, and the structure of the models and some results of applications are introduced. Dynamic and comprehensive optimizations have been completed by the SMLTP model series. Combining different OR branches, the new approach has been proved to be a powerful tool to solve the strategic problems of surface mine planning.

Douglas W. Fuerstenau (DWF) grew up on a farm and in several small communities in rural South Dakota during the depression years, where he learned the value of hard work. Working hard can produce results but being clever and hardworking will give you a bright future. In his later school years, Fuerstenau’s family moved to Rapid City where his intellectual curiosity and capacity helped him graduate with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1949. His technical interests led to graduate studies and completion of a master’s degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1950 and Sc.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1953.

I.INTRODUCTION The B E I R-III Report (NAS-1980) introduces large increases in the estimated health effects of radon as compared with previous work (NAS-1972). It is the purpose of this paper to point out some important failures of these new BEIR-III estimates, to offer a general critique of the procedures used in obtaining them, and to offer more rational estimates. In Sec. II we use the BEIR-III model to calculate the risk to non-smokers from environmental radon, and show that it predicts more than twice the total lung cancer rate actually experienced by nonsmokers. In Sec. III we review the histological evidence which shows that no more than about 10% of the lung cancers among non-smokers can be due to radiation. In Sec. IV, we discuss alternative causes of lung cancer, which further reduces the fraction that can be caused by radiation, and in Sec. V we summarize and conclude that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the lung cancer rate in nonsmokers due to environmental radon by at least a factor of 40. In Sec. VT we review the evidence on risk of radon exposure to smokers, and conclude that it is probably not more than four times the risk to non-smokers; this means that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the risk of low level radon exposure to smokers by at least a factor of 10. In Sec. VII, we consider the reasons for the large over-estimates in the BEIR-III. Report. II. BEIR-III LUNG CANCER RATES DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL RADON AND COMPARISON WITH TOTAL LUNG CANCER RATES AMONG NON-SMOKERS The BEIR-III Report gives the following estimates of the lung cancer risk from low-level radon exposure in terms of working-level-months (WLM): age 35-49, risk = 10 x 10-6 /yr-WLM 50-64, 20 >65, 50 where ages refer to age at death. For latent periods between exposure and onset of these risks it gives age 0-14, latent period = 25 years 15-34, 15-20 years (we use 17 yr) >35, 10 years where ages refer to age at exposure. This is a clear and unambiguous model which is readily usable for deriving numerical estimates. We begin by using it to calculate lung cancer rates due to environmental radon. *This is an abridged version of a paper scheduled to appear shortly in Health Physics. The first step in this process is to estimate the environmental exposures; this was done in a recent paper (Cohen-1981) which concluded that these are about 0.22 WLM/year. In Table 1, this is used to calculate the BEIR-111 predictions for radoninduced lung cancer rates in the U.S. (Col. (5)), and by combining these with population statistics, it is shown (Col.(7)), that it predicts about 24,500 fatalities per year, almost one-third of all U.S. lung cancers. The comparison between the age-specific expected rates from Col. (5) of Table 1 and observed rates among non-smokers is shown in Table 2. The recent paper by Garfinkel (1980) presents the results of a 12 year follow-up on one million Americans in a study by the American Cancer Society. The paper by Hammond (1966) gave the results of the first four years of that study. The paper by Kahn (1966) is based on the so-called "Dorn Study" of 293,000 U.S. veterans of World War II who carry government health insurance. It represents 8 and 1/2 years of follow-up. A recent update on that study (Rogot-1980) does not give absolute lung cancer rates, but the age-standardized ratio between smokers and non-smokers has remained the same which indicates that there has probably not been an important change in the rates for either. The paper by Hammond and Horn (Ha-1958) was an early study by American Cancer Society. It is immediately evident from Table 2 that the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced by environmental radon exceed the [total] lung cancer rates due to [all] causes among non-smokers by about a factor of two at every age. It is only fair to point out that this does not represent a direct discrepancy with the BEIR-III Report since the latter states that its estimates for non-smokers may be too high by a factor ranging from 1 to 6, favoring a factor intermediate between these. Comparisons can also be made with total lung cancer incidence for all ages. A paper by Hammond and Seidman (Hammond-1980) gives the rate for ages above 40 to be 177 x 10-6/year for men and 124 x 10-6/year for women, whereas the rate calculated in Table 1 from BEIR-III for ages above 40 is 309 x 10-6, a factor of two higher. For all ages, the rate among women was reported as 36 x 10-6/year (Hammond 1958) as compared with 114 x 10-6/year calculated from BEIR-III in Table 1, a discrepancy of well over a factor of two. All of the data we have presented are basically from three study groups, but in all three cases the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced [by environmental radon alone] are a factor of two higher than actual [tota] lung cancer rates among non-smokers. "Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita operations has two natural gas-fired molybdenum roasters for converting molybdenum disulfide into molybdenum trioxide. When these roasters were compared to other similar units within the company during a benchmarking exercise, it showed that increased throughput from the roaster units at Sierrita was possible. A team of site metallurgists, technical experts from other sites, and engineers from the Climax Technology Center was formed to study the potential in more detail. The team investigated many parameters in the roaster, including temperature profiles, roaster chemistry profiles, rabble and drop hole patterns, and operational strategies. The results of these studies and the associated throughput improvements are described in this paper. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum, a vital component for the steel industry, is typically found in nature as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). MoS2 is typically recovered via flotation processes and is purified through leaching processes. While molybdenum disulfide is a commercial product, it is not the form of molybdenum that the steel industry requires. They require molybdenum in the form of molybdenum trioxide, MoO3. There are multiple ways to refine molybdenum disulfide into molybdenum trioxide. The primary method is the oxidation of molybdenum disulfide in a multiple hearth roaster. The chemistry of converting molybdenum disulfide to molybdenum trioxide is very favorable at increased temperatures, oxidizing the molybdenum through a range of exothermic reactions to ultimately produce MoO3. The chemical reactions that occur in molydenum roasting occur in three zones. These three zones correspond with four different reactions."

Geochemical laboratories are commonly criticized by geologists about poor analytical reproducibility and erratic anomaly patterns, especially when gold and trace metals from resistant minerals are reported. Geochemical analysis in mineral exploration is a compromise between high productivity on the one hand, imposed by large numbers of samples, and analytical precision and accuracy on the other. However, the physical properties of resistant minerals, such as cassiterite, gold, beryl, chromite, zircon and others, interfere with both of these requirements. Therefore, the degree of sample homogeneity that can reasonably be achieved in sampling and sample preparation must be considered. Subsequently, the understanding of its effects on analytical data quality and the consequences on data interpretation will provide a basis for understanding the problems common to exploration as an interdisciplinary science. Complaints about poor and inadequate analytical performance are not confined to exploration geochemistry. They are a common feature in mining and metallurgy and wherever sampling and analysis of "grains" are concerned - the "nugget" or "grain size effect." The "grain size" effect Poor analytical reproducibility is normal for gold and a well-defined group of other elements usually found in resistant placer minerals. Those who use and interpret geochemical data must realize and appreciate the chemical, the physicochemical, the physical and the mineralogical properties of the elements and their minerals. Especially for the "placer" minerals and their elements, such comprehensive interpretation is crucial. The most important factor to consider is the behavior of a mineral and its metal component(s) during weathering and their integration into the sampled medium, in exploration mostly sediments and soils. (Data interpretation for samples of water, gas, to a certain extent rock, follows different patterns.) A mineral may be chemically and physically stable or it may easily disintegrate physically or decompose chemically, or any combination of such processes, at varying degrees. The breakdown products, in turn, may or may not, interreact with the environment. If the nature of an element or a mineral predestines it for a heterogenous distribution in the sample medium, then nature, size and number of grains likely to occur should be considered in relation to the sample portion taken for analysis. This allows the estimation of their effect on analytical precision and accuracy. Elaborate and sophisticated statistical calculations exist on this subject. But these approaches do not cope with the complexity of the natural surface environment. The miner alogical, chemical and environmental behavior of elements and minerals can be estimated but not calculated. However, the mineral grain sizes and their influence on analytical precision can be precisely calculated if certain conditions, assumptions and idealizations are made. If the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of minerals and elements are understood, such calculations demonstrate the grain (or nugget) effects that mineral properties and (geo)chemical behavior of minerals and elements cause on the precision and accuracy of geochemical analysis through their influence on sample homogeneity. Two other factors that influence the sample homogeneity and the nugget effect are the efficiency of sample preparation and the sample portion taken for analysis. In this way, certain element- or mineral-specific parameters can be established as a guide for the sampling program. The information, for example, may assist in determining sampling procedures in the field, especially the sample weight to be taken for "representative samples." Also, it may help assess whether analytical data, as provided by the laboratory, are acceptable. Finally, it may help determine the approach in data interpretation. However, all such simplified calculations are based on idealized, that is, unreal assumptions and conditions. As such, they represent one extreme end on the scale of probabilities. The reality is found somewhere away from this extreme, towards homogeneity. An example from a study of an eluvial gold prospect may be given for illustration: •Original sample weight: 20 kg (44 lbs) of rock gravel, crushed and ground to -0.18 mm (-80 mesh). •Au content: 20 grains of Au, average size of about 0.5 mm3 (0.03 cu in.) each = 7.5 mg each, making a total of about 150 mg Au in the sample = 7.5 ppm Au. Assumptions •Au occurs in the sample as free, discrete grains only. •Not more than one grain, if any, goes into each sample split (analyte) portion (20 grains of 7.5 mg Au each). •Analysis of original rock sample: 100 g sample for analysis, 20 kg/100 g = 200 samples 20 samples with 1 grain each: result, - 75 ppm Au. 180 samples with no grain: result, 0 ppm Au chances 1:9 •10 g sample for analysis:

A paradigm shift As market economists, mine managers are interested in "staying in business" and even "prospering." Bottom-line results are the "order of the day." Concern for bottom-line results can invoke questions such as how much was produced, at what cost, and was anyone injured? While these questions will always carry everyday emphasis at the mine, they are fundamentally lacking in that they often appear, especially to lower levels of management and to the production worker, as pre-eminent concerns. Driven by market economics, many organizations have decentralized, outsourced, downsized, restructured and formed new coalitions. Investments in new technology and a concentration on productivity have been an essential part of these changes, contributing to improvements in both safety and efficiency. A reason for (and, perhaps a result of) these improvements has been the development of a highly experienced and flexible work force. This situation presents an interesting opportunity to modify a few paradigms about work life in general, and perhaps a few paradigms about how we invest in the miner, in particular. Studying these issues now night offer some interesting opportunities for the Future, as the foundations for the next generation of mine workers are laid. With the average "experienced" U.S. miner five to fifteen years from retirement, perhaps a key determinant of future success in the world market might be how well we make the transition from today's work force to the work force of tomorrow. We can ill afford to wait a few more years to tap into the special knowledge residing within a veteran mining work Force. The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is one approach to defining, capturing and transferring this expertise. The WCPM suggests a paradigm shift, moving from a focus on products (quantity) to a focus on the process (quality). It also involves a slight change in the process -- a different way to think and work. Of great importance, it entails a belief and a commitment to people within the organization; a commitment to collect simple (but interesting) data; exploration for insightful ways to plot and integrate that data; and finally the search for creative methods to reinvest that knowledge back into the organization, that is, back into the work force. As a way of thinking, the WCPM subordinates information about how much is produced daily or how many were injured over a year's time to concern and detail for how the individual's and the work crew's performance contribute toward meeting organizational goals. Drawing upon the expertise within members of that work crew to address and solve operational problems is one approach for meeting organizational goals. This everyday focus on how we work is hypothesized by the WCPM to make the difference between a good section supervisor and the average one; an exemplar continuous-miner operator and the run-of-the-mill one; a mining crew that produces consistently high quantities, but, inadvertently, degrades the production of other units. The WCPM permits objective and reliable performance data to be collected. This data then can be used to define variability within tasks of work crew members; to relate observed variability to a cost consequence; and to more meaningfully analyze performance through the integration of traditional analytical tools, such as the production simulator, CONSIM, with a recommended behavioral approach, the WCPM. Basis for engineering test Most equipment selections and purchases involve a field trial test of the system. Technology is routinely bench tested at the manufacturer's facility, government agencies and the mine site. The WCPM suggests a similar, but more practical, method for testing the performance of a work system -a test for how technology is used (by people) at the work site. It implies learning from veteran mining personnel that have gone well "beyond the book." This approach to learning and to integrating training with everyday work life can help answer questions such as: What constitutes desirable perfor¬mance as, for examples, a shuttle-car operator, a miner operator or a bulldozer operator; what characterizes exem¬plary performance within the context of the work system, the technology and the work crew; how can investments in the worker he linked to measurable results within the organiza¬tion? This paper explores these questions and makes recom¬mendations for enhancing the cost-linkages between invest¬ments in people and the mine's monthly cost sheets.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) techniques have been developed for the medical services field in order to provide accurate internal images of the human body.(l-7) Now, a decade later, CT techniques are starting to be used in non-medical applications such as, non-destructive testing(8), flow pattern analysis(9), drill core examination (10,11), and coal characterization(12,13). In these fields of application, CT techniques offer the potential to extend our knowledge and understanding beyond that provided by more traditional methods of analysis. Although, CT systems involve very specialized and expensive equipment, the advantage of x-ray CT in revealing the detailed internal structure of an opaque material non-destructively should make it an important tool to provide a more complete analysis of mineral processing phenomena. X-ray CT systems generally consist of an x-ray source/collimation unit and a detector/data acquisition unit. The object to be examined is placed between the two functional units as shown in Figure 1. With this system the density array of selected cross sections of a chosen opaque object can be obtained in two dimensions. There are numerous areas in mineral processing to which x-ray CT technology can be applied and it is the aim of this article to identify these potential areas noting the advantages and limitations of the technology. Particular emphasis is placed on particle composition distribution and multiphase fluid flow measurements. In the case of particle composition distribution, liberation analysis and coal washability are considered. While in the case of multiphase fluid flow, swirl flow in the air-sparged hydrocyclone is given by way of example.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

A general model which represents not only batch but also continuous flotation in multi-cell machines is presented. This model considers both the size distribution and the distribution of flotabilities in a size class for valuable mineral particles in the pulp. The general expression is shown to reduce to several previously reported models. In addition, a number of new models are found to arise for different specific assumptions concerning the flotability distribution and/or the size distribution of the particles undergoing flotation. Several of these new models are tested experimentally using laboratory-scale batch and pilot-scale continuous data. Model parameters are estimated from this data and a comparison of calculated recoveries and those experimentally determined are presented. Finally, the influence of the feed rate, aeration rate and valuable mineral content of the feed on the recovery is examined.

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of centimeter size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of millimeter size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85 percent of copper for sample A could be recovered at 65 percent of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual-energy X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Pilot-scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31 percent rejection of a 0.08 percent Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90 percent copper.

The North Shore Inline Interceptor, Phase IA tunnel is a 8,550-meter (28,000-ft) interceptor tunnel currently being constructed by Traylor Bros./Frontier-Kemper, Joint Venture, using a 9.8-meter (32-ft - 4-in) diameter Robbins tunnel boring machine (TBM). This tunnel is being driven in Silurian age dolomite approximately 91.5 m (300 ft) below ground surface. Significant water inflows were encountered when the tunnel drive penetrated the thinly-bedded Waubakee Formation. Flow increases approaching 0.75 cu m per min per 30 m of tunnel (200 gpm per 100 ft) have occurred in this formation. After driving approximately 2,285 m (7,500 ft) of tunnel (200 m full face in the Waubakee Formation), total flows exceeded 12 cu m per min (3,200 gpm) with about 5.7 cu m per min (1,500 gpm) entering the tun¬nel from the 200 m (600 ft) of exposed Waubakee Formation. Additional water control measures consisting of increased pumping capacity, increased water treatment capacity, surface grouting ahead of the tunnel, grouting ahead of the tunnel face and panning to improve the working environment for installation of tunnel support, were implemented to deal with the large water inflows. Currently (January 24, 1989), 3,400 m (11,000 ft) of tunnel has been driven, total water inflows are in the range of 11.7 cu m per min (3,100 gpm) with only 6.8 cu m per min (1,800 gpm) inflow from about 1,220 m (4,000 ft) of tunnel driven full face through the Waubakee Formation.

Part of Capital Improvement Project SE-754 tendered by New York City Department of Design and Construction included installation of a 96-in. (2.47 m)diameter sewer by pipe jacking methods. The pipe selected by the Contractor, EIC Associates, Newark, New Jersey, was a glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin pipe installed in two reaches: 72 m (235-ft.) and 222 m (728-ft.). The machine selected for the excavation was an open face shield. This paper describes the set up of the tunneling operations, subsurface conditions, progress of excavation, pipe performance and other details of the project including unexpected difficult ground conditions that were encountered during excavation and how these conditions were overcome.
