From experience and scientific references it is known that during information processing, the following error types are transmitted: technical, analogy errors and method errors. For decreasing the value of these errors, especially of the method ones, old algorithms should be perfected and new ones should be developed for processing, interpreting and achieving the graphical layout by means of automatic data processing. In this respect, we propose a new deposit model based on numeric mathematical modelling which requires the use of automatic data processing. The utilization of the numeric model of the proposed deposit, allows the obtaining of the following advantages: • the model is used for any deposit form; • it is used for the calculation of deposit resources (volume, weight, and content); • it is used in design due to the facility of obtaining sections through the deposits area; • it eliminates at "0" the errors of graphical data transcription; • the use of the model imposes a uniform geological research; • the algorithm is transposed in a package of programs.

The following paper describes an overview of evaluations for assessing the potential hazards associated with handling newly developed reagents used in the mining industry. Important factors in determining the risk and hazard associated with handling a particular chemical include hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. The hazard evaluation step involves collecting and evaluating appropriate toxicology information on a chemical. This can include a comparison of the structure of a developmental chemical with that of a material with known toxicology information. Acute toxicology data, including oral, inhalation, and dermal LD50 values, eye and skin irritation data and sensitization or allergic potential information are typically generated for new chemicals. Environmental and in-vitro genetic toxicology data (e.g. Ames test) are also used to evaluate new mining reagents.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. Deep well disposal is a much used and abused term which is the panacea for wastewater disposal in some minds and creates near hysteria in others. It can be the answer to a difficult waste disposal problem, or if improperly employed, can create more problems than it solves. My purpose in this presentation is to focus on the value and limitations of deep well disposal as expressed by New York State's experience and policies. To he sure, I feel a place for such practices docs exist if adequate safeguards are utilized. I shall give a broad brush approach to New York's legislative, geologic and operational concerns and speak briefly on some case histories. I shall not delve deeply into the technological details since I am not an expert in mining exploration or well drilling.

INTRODUCTION Homestake Mining Co. owns and operates the Bull¬dog Mountain mine near Creede, CO. Lead-silver con¬centrates are produced from ores extracted from narrow veins which dip from 1.04 to 1.39 rad (60 to 80°). An¬nual mill throughput is approximately 90 700 t (100,000 st). Ore shoots average 2 m (7 ft) in width and the ore is often weak, muddy, and poorly consolidated. Walls can be either strong or highly fractured along the strike of the veins. Cut-and-fill methods were initially selected to mine the deposit and considerable overhand mining occurred during the initial stages of the mine. Because of un¬stable ground conditions, mine management recognized that other methods would have to be employed. Undercut-and-fill mining was adapted to extract the loose ore from narrow veins and is presently the primary method used. Approximately 80% of the annual pro¬duction is extracted by this system. Loading ramps are positioned along the strike of the vein on 90-m (300-ft) intervals to allow for 45-m (150-ft) long cuts in each direction from the extraction raise. This interval was selected for efficient slusher operation and stope cycling. Loading ramps rather than chutes were selected for ore movement into 4.5-t (5-st) Granby-type cars because of extremely sticky ore conditions. Mined-out areas are filled with deslimed mill sands. Sand is pumped from the mill into two mine storage dams where the water is decanted. Each dam has a 544-t (600-st) capacity. Sand is pumped into the mine at a 30 to 40% slurry through 2195 m (7200 ft) of 51-mm (2-in.) thick wall pipe. When called for, sand is reslurried within the dams to a density of 55 to 65% and pumped to the particular mine opening requiring fill. Dry cement is added to the slurry prior to pumping. The capacity of the mine fill system is 20 t/h (22 stph). DEVELOPMENT Vertical development below the main adit level oc¬curs on 61-m (200-ft) intervals from an internal winze. Main haulage drifts or laterals are 2.7 x 2.7 m (9 x 9 ft) in section and driven parallel to the vein structures. Ground conditions generally dictate that better progress can be realized in the footwall than in the hanging wall. A distance of approximately 21 m (70 ft) is maintained between vein and drift openings to accommodate a smooth 18-m (60-ft) radius curve for crosscuts which are driven on 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Approximately 18 m (60 ft) of tail room is driven past the vein inter¬section to accommodate train loading. Ore and waste are hauled using diesel or electric driven locomotives operating over 18-kg (40-Ib) rail [762-mm (30-in.) gage]. Loading ramps are established above each crosscut¬ vein intersection. Scram drifts are then driven in the vein to determine the width and grade of the ore. If a prior decision to mine the block had been reached, then the scram is driven only far enough [about 12 m (40 ft)] to establish a drawpoint and scraper tail room. In most cases, the drawpoint is a 2.1 x 2.1-m (7 x 7-ft) cutout driven about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the footwall. On the level above, a raise bore station is established in the footwall to one side of the crosscut-vein inter¬section. The station is of sufficient size to accommo¬date a Robbins 41R raise boring machine. Support for the station is accomplished with 1.2 and 1.8-m (4 and 6-ft) roof bolts and wire screening. Once completed, a 152-mm (6-in.) concrete slab is poured and the raise drill set in position to center the 1.5-m (5-ft) diam hole approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) from the vein footwall. A 229-mm (9-in.) pilot hole is then drilled to the scram cutout below and reamed back to full diameter (see Fig. 1). STOPING Initial mining in a typical undercut-and-fill stope be¬gins from the top of the borehole. The initial cut can be either immediately beneath the track level or the old scram drift depending upon the particular situation. Cuts vary but are generally 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high. Support is accomplished by square-set timber, overhead caps, or roof bolts and screening depending upon ground conditions. Once the initial cut is removed, underhand timber and screen is installed and cemented sand fill placed. The stope is then ready for undercut mining. Prepara¬tion work begins with sinking 4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 ft) on the borehole plus cutting a slot to the vein. As sinking progresses, hanging sets are installed to provide man¬way and service facilities. Hanging sets 1.7 m (5 ft 8 in.) long and 1.6 x 2.2 m (5 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 4 in.) in section are installed with steel hangers similar to shaft sets. Framed 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) timbers are made up in advance and shipped to the stope during sinking operations. When manway and service facilities are completed to the floor of cut to be mined, generally 3.65 to 4.3 m (12 to 14 ft) below the previous sand fill, the ore is removed to the hanging wall plus a round each way along the vein. Levelers or long stringers are then installed over the raise opening to support the work deck, slusher, and grizzly opening. All waste and ore from the sinking process is fed by gravity to the raise (see Fig. 2). Once the stope is equipped, mining pro¬gresses outward in each direction from the grizzly open¬ing. Stope equipment consists of 907 kg (2000 lb) pull air tuggers, timber skips, 11-kW (15-hp) ventilation fans, 15 to 22-kW (20 to 30-hp) electric slushers, 762 to 1270-mm (30 to 50-in.) scrapers, 67-mm (25/a-in. ) jackleg drills, as well as other drilling and blasting supplies. In narrow stopes [generally less than 2 m (7 ft) wide], no support is required for the underhand caps of the previous fill. Where wide sections in the vein occur, segment braces are installed beneath the caps to insure that the sand support cannot slip away from the hanging wall. The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.

This paper deals with the responsibilities of an operating geologists and the relationship of operations to exploration. It should be of interest to those soon to enter the profession, those new to pining geology and as a review to more experienced geologists. Subjects discussed include detailed geologic mapping, sampling, core logging, assaying, selection of proper map scale, posting geological and assay data, section preparation, identification of ore controls, delineation of development drill targets and geologic hazards, models and the very important topic of salesmanship. Methods and ideas, proven valid in vein, pyrometasomatic replacement and porphyry copper deposits are presented. Hopefully, these will smooth the path for new members of our profession.

Milling has traditionally been considered more art than science. In the last 10 years, significant improvements in process equipment have been made and we are finally taking significant steps toward approaching grinding as a science. Two machines have been at the center of this development. These are the roll press and the high efficiency separator. The former can be considered as a new technology or adaptation of existing i.e. roller mill. The latter is clearly an improvement of existing technology. Other machines have been introduced to a lesser degree and later. Among these are the CKP and Horomill. The purpose of this paper is to provide an over- view of the currently available modifications for operating systems and options for new milling circuits with some comments on their application and history.

The underground fire areas are formed as a result of failure of an active fire extinguishing in mines. Such areas bring about a fire hazard for the work safety and for the mining operations. For liquidation of fire areas it is necessary to create conditions under which a possibly small amount of air is flowing to the fire. To achieve this end, isolation methods are used which consist in erection of full stoppings of various types, sealing practically the fire areas. These methods usually fail in oases when the coal seam is thick and the fire area is situated between the intake shaft and the outtake shaft in which a high-pressure fan is in operation. In such oases ventilation methods based on the balance of aerodynamic potentials in fire areas are to be used. For a very long time the isolation and ventilation methods have been developed in the world mining, No sooner than since 1980 the aerodynamic potential has been used in ventilation methods [1,2,6]. So far, the aerodynamic potential was called in different ways and was determined by different formulae which gave its numerical values more or less approximative. Nevertheless, even in situations featuring by a lack of sufficient theoretical bases of the aerodynamic potential the ventilation methods brought considerable profits in the field of safety in mines and of economics in mine ventilation [1-6,9,10]. The increase in the depth of underground mines and their equipment with expensive machines (apparatus) brought about that the Central Mining Institute at Katowice undertook research works which are crowned by the theory of the aerodynamic potential in mine ventilation networks [7]. The use of this theory in the mentioned ventilation methods will increase their effectiveness. Since the theory will be published in the III rd quarter of this year, we cite in the present paper the formulae and relations associated with this theory which are indispensable to present the balance of aerodynamic potentials in the fire areas in their control by ventilation methods.

Microtunneling first appeared with some regularity in the United States in 1987. Until then, only Japan and Germany utilized this method of construction. Its high costs initially limited its application to special situations. The last ten years have seen the use of new pipe materials, new machines, new cutterheads, new techniques, and an average growth of30 percent each year. This paper documents the growth and changes that have occurred with microtunneling. Based on current industry practices and advances from abroad, this paper postulates what the next ten years may hold.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The repository is located at a depth of 655 m in the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation, 40 km east of Carlsbad, NM. A key component in the design of the WIPP repository is the installation of concrete structures as panel seals in the intake and exhaust drifts after a panel has been filled with waste containers. The DOE has proposed several panel closure design modifications to the EPA. EPA approval of the changes is required since the details of the designs are specified in EPA’s final rule as a condition for WIPP certification. The Environmental Evaluation Group, in its role of providing technical oversight on the WIPP project, has evaluated the proposed modifications. An analysis of this evaluation is discussed.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Li-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions, including thermal, mechanical and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires in battery-electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, Class D extinguishing powder and water mist for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water-mist system on the suppression of the LFP battery (a type of Li-ion battery) fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

Simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments on a pyritic ore from Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, were carried out. Mineral characterization, agitated leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic tests results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted in a temperature range of 40 to 80 °C, an oxygen pressure range of 87.5 to 200 psi, and cyanide concentration range of 0.8 to 1.2 weight percent in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. Dissolution rates of 81 to 86 percent were achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 weight percent NaCN and processing time of one hour.

Optimal sizing of a ventilation shaft is a classical subject in mine ventilation economics.. The shaft size is optimized by minimizing the sum of shaft-construction and ventilation-power costs, or owning and operating costs. The length and air quantity of the shaft are held constant, and the location of the shaft, affecting its depth, and construction and ventilation power costs, is not considered (Hartman, 1961; Lambrechts, 1974; Wang et al., 1978). This paper proposes an approach by which the location and size for a new pair of shafts (intake and return shafts) are optimized for a coal-mine ventilation network. Specifically, the problem is to determine the location and size for a new pair of shafts, and the distribution of air between the new and old shafts so that the combined cost of shaft construction and ventilation power is minimized. The shaft length or depth corresponds to the height of overburden at any shaft location. To simplify the problem, the shaft locations will be limited to the line along the main or submain entries, and the connection entries at the shaft bottom neglected. In order to calculate the ventilation-power cost, the air power of the system should be determined. This in turn requires the calculations of the air quantity and pressure of each fan in the network, satisfying Kirchhoff's laws and Atkinson equation. After obtaining the air power, the cost calculation is straightforward. In the following, we shall assume that the resistances of all airways, and the quantity for each mining section, which is controlled by adjusting the air regulator, are all known. The resistances for the shafts are determined from the estimated friction factors, and shaft dimensions and lengths. Furthermore, it will be assumed that the fans can be selected to meet the duties called for by any network solutions.

Electrochemical oxidation of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) has been investigated as an attempt to gain a better understanding of its dissolution chemistry. Rest potential measurements, cyclic voltammetry and constant potential experiments were conducted in the pH range from 8 to 12 in the absence and the in the presence of cyanide. A two-step reaction sequence is suggested by the electrochemical measurements. The initial step is described by: [FeAsS+6H20=Fe(OH)3+H2AsO3- +S°+7H++6e] The second step involves the oxidation of the arsenite and sulfur according to the following reactions: [H2As03-+H20=HAsO24-+3H++2e and S° +4 H2O=SO4-+3H++6e] Stoichiometric determinations confirm that 14 electrons are involved in the overall reaction.

Reviewing events in the minerals industry, in economic geology, and in my own exploration work, I find that the most compelling subject for comment is the increasing ferment in ore deposits theory. New discoveries and continued investigations of bedded deposits of lead and zinc, copper, iron, uranium, etc., coupled with the availability of much new and significant data from sedimentary and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and oceanography, has led many economic geologists like myself to become disenchanted with former simplistic notions. Now disenchantment among serious people should presuppose both valid objections to the old, and valid new substitutes. I can sum up my own position and, I believe, what most of the recent writers on ore deposits theory are trying to tell us, by saying that a physico-chemical (bench science) approach to a natural science is neither correct nor useful, and that the obvious cure is a return to the study of the geology of ore deposits. More specifically, ore should be viewed merely as an unusual concentration produced, in stages, by the natural processes inherent in the geochemical cycle. In criticizing the conceptual basis of a science, one is involved simultaneously in the inherent character of the science, its subject matter, and the old and new concepts. I have found it impossible to make a clean separation along those lines. As a result, and as the title suggests, these are not-quite-random reflections on genesis, a matter near and dear to all true treasure hunters since Agricola.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. DPM exposure is therefore regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The current monitoring process takes days or weeks for exposure levels to be known, and a real-time monitoring device is needed. It is believed that infrared spectroscopy has potential for use in a real-time, field-portable device. This paper presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios.

A new method of pillar stability evaluation was proposed. The unique feature about the method is that it estimates two types of stability factors for the pillar. The first stability factor is to measure how much the applied stress at that point is smaller than its strength, and the second stability factor is to predict whether or not the pillar will fail violently. The strain-softening behavior of coal pillars was simulated by the Drucker-Prager yield criterion. A new algorithm that simulates the strain-hardening behavior of the gob was used. A numerical technique to estimate the local mine stiffness (LMS) was introduced and verified by both numerical and analytical methods. A case of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine was used to define the stability limits for the proposed method.

The Meteoric Water Mobility Procedure (MWMP) was developed in the State of Nevada during the 1980’s as part of their mine waste characterization programs. During the 1990’s the Waste Subcommittee of the Nevada Mining Association (NvMA) contacted ASTM Subcommittee E01.02 on Ores, Concentrates and Related Metallurgical Materials to undertake a standardization program for the method. A cooperative program was developed in conjunction with the Acid Drainage Technology Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS)Prediction Committee, which involved eight of the NvMA labs performing duplicate leaching tests on two test materials: a coarse fraction of the USGS Hard Rock Mine Waste standard and a typical spoils sample from a heap leach operation undergoing closure in Nevada. Solutions for metals analysis were preserved and sent to the USGS Laboratories in Denver to determine the reproducibility and repeatability of the leaching. The history of the method and reference material and the results of the interlaboratory testing and statistical analyses will be presented.
