"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

This dilemma can only be solved by a complete understanding and analysis of all the factors relevant to human welfare which include environmental considerations, economic implications, and the social and psychological dimensions. A decision-making framework is therefore necessary which will encompass all relevant views of the problem.

At 6 percent downgrade to a low point beneath California?s Sacramento River, the Lower Northwest Interceptor Sewer was a difficult project from the outset. Project owner Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District (SRC-SD) planned to excavate the V-shaped tunnel in two sections using an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in soft ground. Muck removal, due to the steep downgrade, was a tricky proposition. ?We did look at muck cars, but determined they were not the best option due to the relatively steep slope of the tunnel alignment. The safety benefits of conveyors on this job were obvious, as there were not the potential hazards associated with muck cars traveling on an incline or derailing,? said Steve Norris, senior civil engineer for SRCSD The successful project represented one of the first instances of a conveyor system being used for a soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) application. Several projects in California, including a recent tunnel completed in 2009, have highlighted a growing acceptance of conveyor muck removal in a variety of ground conditions. Conveyors offer higher system availability than more common methods, such as muck cars, as they allow for continual operation of the TBM. The design of conveyor systems must, however, take into account the differences in material between soft ground and hard rock, including belt cleaning features, sealed transfer points and other elements.

INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. During the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s a program of geologic mapping of counties has been underway in Nevada by geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Bureau of Mines. The aping has been done principally at reconnaissance scales, with more detailed work in local areas. Geologic maps are either published or open-filed for about a dozen counties at scales of 1:200,000 or 1:250,000. One by-product of the geologic mapping has been the recognition of about 80 Tertiary volcanic centers from which large or very large volumes of volcanic material ranging from rhyolitic to andesitic in composition have been erupted. For purposes of this discussion these are regarded as the major centers; the tally does not include hundreds and perhaps thousands of small rhyolitic domes and plugs and basaltic vents. About 15 to 20 of the 80 major centers are believed to be calderas ranging in diameter from 3 to 25 miles. Some have been described in the literature by geologists of the Nevada Test Site and others. However, the vast majority of the 80 centers have not been described in print, and we are indebted to our colleagues for locating them for us in many of the counties. Extensive test work performed on the Coalscan 3500 ash analyzer at the Grootegeluk Coal Mine has led to the successful implementation of on-line ash monitoring to control the quality of coking coal and power station coal. Test work results are given and the advantages of on-line bias compensation discussed. Some details of the quality control systems subsequently implemented are also highlighted. Finally, the economic benefit of on-line ash monitoring based on the Mayer curve is demonstrated.

High-calcium limestones occur in the upper part of the New Market Formation, of Lower Middle Ordovician age, in Franklin and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. The high-calcium facies of the New Market Formation is represented by sublithographic limestone or vaughanite, which probably formed in quiet water; low-energy environments such as intershoal lagoons, or in protected bays similar to the present-day Florida Bay environment. Rapid facies changes are characteristic of the strata. The better grade of stone lies in the upper 100 to 125 feet of the New Market Formation and averages 95-97% calcium carbonate. Silica and magnesia are about equal in amount as impurities. One high-calcium belt extends from the Maryland state line through Chambersburg and Newville to beyond Carlisle. The strata in this belt are structurally complex, which requires careful field study&apos; and core-drilling prior to exploitation. Stone suitable for blast-furnace flux is present in relatively large amounts, but stone for open-hearth use or portland cement requires more selective quarrying.

Recently development of cheaper and cleaner energy sources has become a more important and urgent issue, because of the soaring crude oil price and environmental problems such as global warming. In this social context, to establish basic technologies and solve fundamental issues associated with environmental impact assessments, the Environmental Impact Assessment Group of the Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources (MH21 research consortium) in Japan has conducted a number of research and development activities since FY2001. These activities include: 1) surveys of the marine environment that will form the basis of environmental impact assessments associated with methane hydrate development; 2) the development of core technologies to monitor deep-sea environments; 3) research of major issues related to environmental impact assessments; and 4) the development of numerical models to predict the deformation of seafloor sediments containing methane hydrates.

The aim of this paper is to present the progress of the plan of the Greek Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC S.A.) at the Lignite Centre of Megalopolis in Peloponnesus (southern Greece) to manage impacts on local communities in areas affected by its activities during the lignite mining operation and post-closure. The reclamation works in the waste dump areas of the mines that constitute the Megalopolis Lignite Centre, concerning the utilization of waste dumps for infrastructure community projects constructions are discussed. Moreover, selected environmental indicators concerning land use and closure and rehabilitation are presented.

In reasonably dry rock, long-wave radar can theoretically explore to distances approaching 75 meters (250 ft). High-resolution radar reflections have already been demonstrated through 13 m of hard limestone, through 9 to 18 m of coal in place and through 225 m of rock salt, using only low-power experimental radar equipment. Radar reflections have been received through the rock from rough pillar walls, from faults, and from a slim, uncased, vertical drill hole. In three years of intermittent experimentation, the feasibility of rapid radar exploration of large volumes of rock, with portable equipment, in deep, wet workings has been demonstrated. With future, improved equipment the theoretical working range, of the order of 75m, is expected to be attained in most hard rocks. THE TECHNIQUE Fig. 1 illustrates an early "monocycle" radar system (1) set up in a coal mine. This radar equipment is entirely different from that employed for detecting distant objects through the atmosphere. However, the basic principle is the same: a pulse of electromagnetic energy is radiated by the transmitter, a portion is reflected by some "target" object embedded in the surrounding medium and some of this energy is collected by the receiving antenna. In the receiver, the pulse is amplified, is "stretched out in time" by a sampling process, and is displayed on the screen of a cathode-ray oscilloscope. In April 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded the first contract for rapid machine excavation of a water conveyance tunnel . Since then the Bureau has excavated seven tunnels with a total length of over 190,000 feet utilizing rapid excavation tunneling machines. Tunnel bored diameters have varied from 9&apos; 0" to 20&apos; 10" (See Table #1) and tunnel lengths from 5,000 feet to 67,000 feet. Driver and cutter units varied from 43 rolling teeth and eight rolling discs mounted on a rotating head driven by five 200 HP 23,000 volt electric motors to 20 discs and one tricone unit mounted on a rotating head driven by two 100 HP 440 volt motors. All tunnels were driven with a laser beam guidance system governing both line and grade. Trailing conveyors and rail haulage systems were used to dispose of the excavated material. Approved Bureau of Mines diesel locomotive engines for waste trains were prevalent power sources supplemented by battery units on some projects. Sandstone, conglomerates, agglomerates, siltstone, shale, and granite were the geological formations encountered, with sandstone and shale the preponderant material . Tunnel support systems utilized were structural steel ribs; rock bolts and metal plates; and shotcrete, or combinations of these. Progress varied from 51-1/2 feet to 154 feet per working day for three shifts, depending on rock material and supports required. One contractor established a record rate of advance of over 400 feet in one day, 1,905 feet in one week, and 6,848 feet in one month. Such diversified experience in underground machine excavation methods presented an excellent opportunity to observe, analyze, and evaluate associated environmental health problems. Antimony removal has become necessary as it is commonly found in precious metal refractory ore bodies. The Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho has recovered metallic electrowon antimony from its argentiferous tetrahedrite (Cu2S&apos;Sb2S3) deposits for over fifty years. Recently, Sunshine conducted an intense research effort to improve and modernize its antimony facility. This paper presents information which was learned about the antimony electrowinning processes and the development of a single¬-electrolyte antimony electrowinning technology. The relevant effects of process variables were investigated. The research results and the relevant chemistries involved in metallic antimony electrowinning will be discussed.

The Kaldo furnace is a type of top-blown, rotary reactor that is widely used for the production of precious metals. During the production of doré, a gas jet of compressed air is injected through a water-cooled lance to impinge upon the molten bath surface in the presence of molten metal and a slag phase. A common problem during operation is the difficulty in controlling the distance that the injection lance can penetrate through the reactor mouth without being splashed by the molten phases. Splashing may produce accretions on the lance surface as well as plugging of the nozzle at the lance tip. An additional problem may occur when the gas jet impinges upon the furnace wall and causes rapid wearing of the refractory linings. Because the conditions prevailing in the Kaldo furnace offers poor visibility to the human eye, its operation mostly relies on the empirical knowledge of plant operators and process engineers. A systematic study in a scale model of the Kaldo furnace under controlled laboratory conditions may be valuable to estimate the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance, and thus help improve the operation of an industrial reactor. From a fundamental perspective, the observation of the basic features of the flow patterns in the scale model may help elucidate the relevant phenomena governing the hydrodynamics in this type of system.

Outlined is a review of the application of new selective chelating reagents as flotation collectors; calculation methods for the selection of chelating structures, limitation of the function of commercial chelating agents as collectors, and the synthesis of two new classes of chelating collectors with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure for oxidized lead-zinc ores. Given are: examples of substituted mercaptobenzothiazole and aminothiophenol structures, flotation and adsorption study of an alcoxyl-mercaptobenzothiazole on cerussite, comparison of adsorption of conventional and chelating collectors, study of the influence of the aliphatic structure1 component on the collecting power of chelating type reagent and the design of chelating collectors with optimal structure.

New exhaust control techniques and devices may be necessary to meet future diesel particulate matter emission standards in underground coal mines. This paper reviews conventional work practices and devices used to control diesel exhaust emissions, and new techniques being tested by the US Bureau of Mines. Discussions will center on important work practices and on the function and efficiency of exhaust aftertreatment devices. An industry-government cooperative research project to develop and test an exhaust aftertreatment system for part 36 equipment is also discussed.

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

The mechanistic or phenomenological approach to ball milling involving the, concepts of particulate selection and breakage functions with particle population balance models has been well established over the past decade (c.f., the review articles by Austin (1) Herbst and Mika, (2) and Snow (3)). Initial efforts to apply this approach concentrated on batch milling, but since most milling in industrial practice is continuous, much recent research has been directed to extending this approach to continuous milling. The primary difference between batch and continuous milling processes is the relative importance of material mixing and transport in the mill in the latter case. Much analytical (4-8) and some experimental (9-15) work on the effect of mill mixing and transport on milling has been recently reported. Much of the analytical work has naturally centered around extension of the well-developed concepts that have been applied to chemical reactors, (16-18) Fortunately, it has been found(1) that most milling processes are analogous to first-order chemical reactions so that the combined effects of material transport and reaction (breakage) can be handled by the relatively simple segregated flow concepts. A technique is presented for the economic selection of a slurry pipeline with the aid of a computer. Mathematical models for the flows of homogeneous slurries are utilized. Only the pipeline and its prime movers are considered. Slurry flow properties are first obtained from rheology and/or pipeline data measurements. A rheological model is then selected for the slurry. It must be emphasized that the accuracy of the method is greatly affected by the accuracy of the slurry flow-property data. Approximate cost parameters may be selected from data for plain and lined pipes, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, motors and engines. Cost data for the purchase, operation and maintenance of slurry pipelines are also described. A total cost equation for the ownership and operation of a slurry pipeline system is then established. The complexity of the equation is a function of the rheological model selected to describe the slurry. The equation is solved with the aid of a computer for several combinations of pipeline diameters and throughputs to yield minimum total annual cost for the system. A mean velocity is then computed to give the required throughput. The velocity is constrained by an upper and lower bound. A high velocity is undesirable from an energy consumption viewpoint and if pipeline wear is possible. On the other hand, the velocity must exceed the deposition velocity for a heterogeneous suspension or the critical velocity for a homogeneous suspension. There is no guarantee that the velocity developed by this method will lie within the constraints applied, nor that the constraints are even known. This is particularly true for heterogeneous slurries. An important feature of the method is the ease with which the variables can be adjusted to measure the sensitivity of the total cost to the variables. The purpose of the sensitivity analysis is to identify those critical variables that. if changed, can considerably affect the total cost. Mathematically, individual variables are changed and the effect of such a change on the annual total cost is computed. But from a designer&apos;s point of view, individual components in the system are changed to study their effect on the annual total cost. A change in one component of the system may involve a change in one or more variables. For example, the replacement of a steel pipe by a smooth-lined pipe will change the pipewall roughness and wall thickness as well as purchase, operating, and maintenance costs.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.
