BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January of 1995 to develop long term plans for decommissioning of the waste rock material at their Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 billion tonnes of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, the operators will deposit a total of approximately 5 billion tonnes in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semi-arid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia, approximately 1200km north-northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. A laboratory program and the soil-atmosphere modelling completed to design the horizontal field test plots are described. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots are discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The key components of the instrumentation program are the design and installation of large scale field lysimeters to measure the unsaturated flow of moisture into the waste rock from the base of the cover layer. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapo-transpiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. A key feature of the design is the use of pit run waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long term performance.

INTRODUCTION Construction is underway on a laboratory cavern 713 m below surface at the Soudan Mine, Tower-Soudan State Park, in northeastern Minnesota. The 13.9 in wide by 11.6 m high by 71.8 in long cavern will provide a laboratory space for basic research in physics, in which experiments can be conducted with greatly reduced interference from cosmic radiation. A first generation experiment, called the Soudan 1 detector, is currently operating in a converted drift 591 in below surface at the mine. The initial phase of the Soudan 2 detector will be an 1100-metric ton unit, which will occupy approximately a 19 m length of the cavern. Control and monitoring equipment will be in a prefabricated shop office enclosure erected in the cavern. The location and planned usage for the laboratory cavern present special excavation, lining, and outfitting requirements. Temperature and humidity control, a relatively clean dust-free environment, and a long service life are required. Low cost and risk to the owner were basic requirements due to the nature of the funding. The most common type of site selected to meet these two constraints is either an operational mine or a civil works facility such as a road tunnel. There are often serious problems for such laboratories because of ongoing operations such as blasting, hauling, etc. Most of these problems do not exist for the Soudan 2 laboratory because the mine is used as a historical site with regular tours only in the summer season. The subject of this discussion is timely. The U.S. phosphate industry is suffering the throes of depression. It's plight is a matter of widespread concern. The future role of the U.S. industry in world markets is of particular interest. If we should prognosticate phosphate supply-demand on the basis of recent history, we would face a puzzling choice of scenario. In 1980, perhaps the best year ever for U.S. phosphate, 54.6 million metric tons of phosphate rock entered the market place. Of this, more than half was exported -- divided almost equally - as rock or phosphate fertilizer. During the last half of 1981 the situation had begun to change.

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose over the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker?s daily activities. Observations about the worker?s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks, so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the Action Level or the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit. The software generates a variety of interactive onscreen displays showing where, when, and how the worker?s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations, and times that are associated with the greatest amount of the worker?s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise over-exposure of their workers.

Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

This paper presents an overview of the New Mississippi Tunnel Outfall for the Transportation Expansion Project (T-REX). The Outfall conveys highway and other urban drainage to the South Platte River as well as provides long needed relief from flooding problems in the southeastern portion of the Interstate 25 highway corridor. The Outfall tunnel incorporates a one-pass precast concrete segmented liner to convey storm water under I-25 then under Mississippi Avenue to the river. The Outfall crosses both the existing I-25 as well as the future improvements including under the Light Rail Transit, a new bridge abutment, widened lanes, and new retaining walls. The Outfall also crosses adjacent to several buildings and five bridges, under major traffic and utility intersections, and through difficult geology.

DuPont’s Florida Plant has been mining in northeast Florida and supplying titanium-bearing minerals, zircon and staurolite for over 50years.The site has successfully implemented and “sustained” a land reclamation/habitat enhancement program that goes beyond regulatory requirements and standard industry practices. However, the term sustainability has been used by so many organizations, many with divergent viewpoints, that it is important for a mine to develop its over-all concept and approach to sustainable operation. As a foundation, the outstanding reclamation efforts at DuPont’s mine will be presented followed by a broader look at the overall sustainability strategies and tactics used at the site.

This report describes actions taken to control silica dust at the Yucca Mountain Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), a tunnel located in Southern Nevada that is part of a scientific program to determine site suitability for a potential nuclear waste repository. The rock is a volcanic tuff containing significant percentages of both quartz and cristobalite. Water use for dust control was limited because of scientific test requirements. A major dust reduction was achieved with an intermediate air cleaning station located on a rear deck of the TBM trailing gear.

In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-order grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the procedures described in the text by Austin, Klimpel and Luckie, using a slurry density of 70 weight percent. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56 m diameter by 0.91 m length (2 ft. by 3 ft.), 0.82 m by 1.52 m (3 ft. by 5 ft.), 3.36 m by 7.90 m (11.5 ft. by 25 ft.), 4.41 m by 9.10 m (14.5 ft. by 30 ft.), and 5 m by 11.1 m (17 ft. by 36 ft.), assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distribustions and capacities for batch grinding in the 0.56 m and 0.82 m diameter mills and open circuit grinding in the 0.82 m diameter and larger mills using a one-large/two-small reactors in series model fitted to the residence time distribution measured in the 4.41 m diameter mill. The simulated results were compared to plant data for ranges of mill capacities. It was found that the simulated product size distributions were in good agreement with the experimental values below the 70% passing sizes, but did not agree so well in the top sizes. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values for the pilot-scale mills, were about 7 percent too high for the 3.36 m and 4.41 m diameter mills and about 25 percent high for the 5 m diameter mill. Use of the Bond method with the measured Work Index of the phosphate ore gave capacity predictions that were 45 to 150 percent too high.

Increasing attention is being paid to laterite nickel ore as an alternative to nickel sulfide ore to act as a feedstock for nickel metal production. While laterite nickel ore accounts for a lion’s share of global nickel resources at approximately 72 percent, it accounts for only 42 percent of the world’s nickel production. In addition, the processing of nickel sulfide ore is confronted with enormous challenges due to deeper drilling requirements, higher production costs and depleting reserves. The nickel content in the nickel laterite ore associated with hydrated iron oxides and silicate minerals limits the application of physical beneficiation methods for the removal of iron. Thus, magnetic reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation has been regarded as one of the attractive routes to concentrate and separate the valuable metals from the impurities.

New compound classes previously unknown in flotation practice of non-sulphide ore beneficiation have been developed. The presented study results consider amine salts of alkyl sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonic acid used as primary collectors, N-methyl amides of alkyl phosphoric acids - as auxiliary modifying collectors and pentaerythritole ethers of tall oil - as flotation accelerators. These reagents synthesized from accessible raw material are almost ready for commercial production. Efficiency of the new reagents for various non-sulphide ores has been demonstrated in a series of flotation tests.

The production of kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America exceeds 13 million tons sold into higher value market segments. With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

Hydrometallurgical processes are needed to extract nickel (Ni) when it is disseminated in mineral matrix. High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) and atmospheric acid leaching (AAL) are alternatives, and AAL has the advantage of requiring mild temperatures and pressure. Reducing-reagent tests improved the extraction of metals for the specific limiting portion of the ore. Low dosage of sodium thiosulfate presented better selectivity and safer operating conditions, allowing metal extractions of 50–62 percent at 95 °C. However, the low extraction rate obtained for Ni and the similar levels of impurities — magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co) and iron (Fe) — extracted may represent economical and technological challenges in the downstream process.

The addition of coal preparation plants changed the coal industry during the past. Now it is time co once again improve the quality and types of coal products coming from future coal preparation plants to meet the changing needs of our society. Clean Coal Technology, along with federal support provided, is forcing our industry to provide cleaner coal products for industrial applications. Liquid fuels from coal is just one of many new products from a coal preparation plant that has a ready market in the transportation sector. UCC Research Corporation is developing these new liquid coal products and this paper will describe the progress and the new slate of coal products to be provided from future preparation plants.

In several sections of the country new demands are being brought bar cement users. Among these the demand' for truck shipments; and palletized loads present new problems that do not lend themselves to sample solution. In fact these demands have far-reaching effect in the way bagged cement might be marketed. Early solutions of palletized truck loads filled from existing packing and loading facilities have resulted in' slowdown in packing, additional labor and space for palletizing, considerable experimentation in type and construction of pallets, and usually far from optimum truck handling and loading methods.

Sedimentary dolomitic phosphate ores are difficult to treat by flotation, and high-grade phosphate concentrates with high recoveries are difficult to obtain. The literature indicates that the reagents required for beneficiation of such ores are generally dictated by the nature of the gangue. In this paper, the optimum flotation parameters necessary for enhancing the grade and recovery of a typical low-grade dolomitic rock phosphate ore from Jhamarkotra, Rajasthan, are highlighted. The standard design-of-experiment (DOE) technique was used to obtain empirical models for both grade and recovery. The model equations were then used for optimizing the flotation parameters, including pH, percent solids, collector dosage and depressant dosage. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that a phosphate concentrate containing about 36% P205, with a recovery greater than 95%, can be obtained in a single-stage by the reverse flotation of carbonaceous minerals at the optimized conditions. Minerals extraction is related to complex sustainable development issues that are subject to international and local controversies. Debates must be based on objective and comparative elements. Defining strong indicators for assessing impacts and performances of mining sites thus appears necessary to inform and support the decision-making process for stakeholders. Recently, many indicator sets have been developed on an international level based on top-down approaches, but they commonly lack legitimacy for stakeholders and adequacy to specific site issues. They thus need to be complemented by the consultation of local actors concerned by such mining activity, in order to define indicators that are closer to the needs and contexts of the specific sites. The question raised by this kind of top-down/bottom-up approach is how to organize and reveal the plurality of values and concerns associated with mining. Based on the principle of representative diversity, the approach undertaken at the Arlit uranium mines in Niger aimed at defining indicators that are understood and accepted by all actors. The aim was to measure the impacts and performances of mining sites in the four sustainable development dimensions, and at local, regional and national scales.

In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put into automating mining equipment with the goal of improving worker health and safety and increasing mine productivity. Significant progress has been made in automating mining equipment such as load-haul-dumps and drills in underground environments where global positioning systems are unavailable. This paper addresses automating the task of positioning the shuttle-car (SC) under the continuous-miner (CM) coaldischarge conveyor during cutting and loading operations. A stereo depth camera is mounted on the SC. Machine learning based algorithms are applied on the camera’s output to identify the CM discharge conveyor and segment the scene into various regions such as roof, ribs, and personnel. This information is used to plan the shuttle car path to the CM discharge conveyor. The approach currently uses a 1/6th scale continuous miner and shuttle car in an appropriately scaled mock mine

Spontaneous combustion in western U.S. coal mines has been recognized as a serious problem which requires unique solutions. Methods have been developed for longwall mining which rely on the existence of an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in the gob for control of the spontaneous combustion hazard rather than the use of bleeder systems. Monitoring of the gob atmosphere is required to protect against the possibility of an explosion and to detect spontaneous heatings. Data from an example mine employing such a system is included to illustrate normal gob gas trends and is compared to abnormal trends which resulted from and were indicative of a fire. Under normal circumstances the oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations decline rapidly as the longwall face retreats. Samples taken from a leaking seal in the example mine prior to a spontaneous heating showed virtually no oxygen depletion, contained erratic CO concentrations, and indicated the existence of hydrogen, a fire indicator. The appearance of an abnormal trend in the gob atmosphere can be used as an early warning of spontaneous heatings.
