With the invention of prime movers, it was initially power engineering which dominated the development of industrial history before it was replaced by production techniques resulting from the more widespread use of machines. With the advances in the field of data processing and with the introduction of novel communication techniques, it is information technology- which today is having an ever increasing impact on technological progress. The main objectives of information technology in this context are a positive influence on the ?time? factor as well as the provision of tools to handle the complexity governing many operational processes through a concentration of information for the decision-making process. The German hardcoal industry became aware of the chances inherent in these new technological possibilities for the optimization of operational sequences and of decision-making and planning processes as a potential for success at an early stage and it has worked out a purposeful concept for their implementation.

Since 1955, Gaspe Mines has produced 150 Mt (165 million st) of ore averaging 0.9% copper. The ore was mined from two open pits and from underground workings. In 1994, four exploration drill holes discovered a buried porphyry/skarn copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) deposit at depths of between 1,000 and 1,700 m (3,280 and 5,580 ft) below the top of Porphyry Mountain. The mineralization and alteration associated with the Porphyry Mountain quartz monzonite does not outcrop. Prior to 1997, about 19,500 m (64,000 ft) of drilling in 12 drill holes had outlined 200 Mt (220 million st) grading 0.73% Cu and 0.08% Mo. Mineralization occurs as veins and disseminations of chalcopyrite and molybdenite.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT At the beginning of the 1970 more than 90% of pro¬duction drilling in open-pit mining was obtained with the use of rotary drills. At the same time, the use of rotary drills underground was virtually nonexistent. Several progressive mines began questioning whether efficient rotary drilling could not be adapted to under¬ground applications. In the late 60s and early 70s at¬tempts to use rotary drilling were made by Inco, Ltd. and Meramac Mining, utilizing drill units designed as a combination of small diameter raise drills and rotary drills. These initial attempts were unsuccessful primarily due to the immobility of the equipment and low degree of dependability. At the same time, experiments con¬ducted by Inco and Meramac using large diameter in¬the-hole percussion drills produced immediate encourag¬ing results. The first serious attempt at utilizing rotary drilling underground was made by Texasgulf in 1971 at Kidd Creek mine in Canada. An experimental stope 15 m wide, 36 m long, and 30 m deep was drilled using 200-mm diam rotary drilled holes. The machine used was a Robbins' Model 11 D. The Model 11D is a rotary drill designed to drill drain and utility holes under¬ground. The results of this test revealed that large diameter blasthole stoping was feasible. The indications were that the major areas of concern-fragmentation and pillar damage-could be controlled and a new low-cost stoping method resulted. At this point Texasgulf and Robbins entered into a cost-sharing agreement to develop a rotary drilling unit specifically for this stoping method. Drilling of the trial stope required pouring a concrete pad at each drill hole plus anchoring the derrick to the pad by means of rock¬bolts. Utilization expressed in terms of drilling time to available time was less than 20%. It was obvious that the required unit had to be mobile, setup time had to be minimized, and rod handling had to be improved. The first attempt at an underground production-type rotary drill consisted of mounting the basic 11D on an air-powered Eimco 600 Series crawler. The crawler was equipped with four screw-type leveling jacks operated by an impact wrench; rod rack facilities for 60 m of 1.2-m long, 170-mm diam rods; a rod handling facility consisting of an air-lift swing boom and a pipe loader which automatically positioned the rod under the float¬ing drive box; a turnbuckle anchor system requiring in¬stallation of four rockbolts in the drill drift floor and placing turnbuckles from the rockbolts to the corners of the drill; and trailing power units containing the electrics and hydraulics required to operate the drilling unit. Operation of this unit revealed a vast improvement in drilling time but some problem areas remained. The anchoring system required secondary drilling and proved difficult to adapt to the localized irregular floor surface and the trailing power unit was difficult to maneuver and was causing unnecessary maintenance costs. Addi¬tional improvements resulted in the standard 11MD rotary blasthole drill. DESCRIPTION OF UNIT This standard model consists of the drill and the power unit integrally mounted on an air-powered crawler chassis (Fig. 1). The rod-handling and leveling¬jack systems are similar to those used on the prototype Texasgulf unit and remained relatively the same. The anchoring system has been replaced by the roof jack, initially screw type but now hydraulically actuated. The anchoring system is necessary as the drill exerts more thrust than the weight of the unit. During operation it is found that the two front jacks adequately anchor the machine. The complete unit's operational dimensions are: height, 3.2 m; width, 2.1 m; and length, 4.2 m requiring a 3.5- x 3-m drill drift. The derrick is pivot mounted and raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder reducing the transport height to 2.5 m. The derrick is also turnbuckle mounted to allow dip angle drilling from vertical to 0.52 rad (30°) off vertical. The drill derrick can be mounted to allow dip axis to be parallel or perpendicu¬lar to the long axis of the unit. The standard rods are 1.2 m in length and are contained in racks of 10 which can be removed for transportation. Drilling torque is produced by a 56-kW (75-hp) electric motor driving a double vane pump which in turn drives a Robbins high torque gear-type hydraulic mo¬tor. In addition to the hydraulic motor, the machine drive system has a 3.9:1 planetary gear reducer. This results in six speeds with the following minimum and maximum range: Maximum rpm 112 Torque 3725.5 J (380 kg m) Minimum rpm 10 Torque 14 706.0 J (1500 kg m) Drilling thrust is provided by two bootstrap cylin¬ders pressurized by a variable volume pump. This sys¬tem can produce from 0 to 267 231.2 N thrust in either direction. Bailing air (approximately 17 m3/min at 382.2 to 490.3 kPa) is introduced through a rotary swivel pass¬ing directly through the center of the drive system to keep efficiency and losses to a minimum. Hole annulus is also kept to a minimum by using 170-mm rod when drilling a 200-mm hole. A small amount of water is added to the air for dust suppression. The machine has to be supplied with air, water, and electrical power. It does not appear feasible to provide an integral air power supply with the rotary drill such as is done with open-pit rotary drills. Air is required and installed during the primary development of the drill drift. The machine can be adapted to drill hole diameters from 170 to 228 mm for blasthole operations. The drill string consists of the rotary bit, crossover stabilizer, roller stabilizers, and standard rods. The operator controls speed and thrust pressure from an operating console which can be mounted in a conve¬nient position. Mount Isa has made an adaption to the operating console to permit remote collaring of drill holes in an uncleared floor.

Bioleaching is an environmental friendly process that has gained much interest for the production of metals from metal-bearing wastes or materials. The process decreases carbon footprint by reducing consumption of fossil fuels. Iron is a key factor in acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria’s activity, which is used extensively in the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. In the present study, the effect of different iron sources is investigated on sphalerite (ZnS) bioleaching. For this purpose, the effects of FeSO4  .7H2O, Fe2(SO4  )3 and FeS2 (pyrite) were studied on bacterial activity, and zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) dissolutions were monitored from a ZnS concentrate. Under optimum conditions, the dissolutions of Zn, Pb, Cd and As were found to be 39.8, 0.1. 0.03 and 10 percent, respectively, in 25 days.

Preliminary studies were conducted at Jim Walter Resources, Inc. Blue Creek No. 3 Mine to determine the influence propane operated heaters exert on the mine ventilation system when two of three intake airshafts were heated. During initial use of the heaters, it was found that change in density caused by heating a portion of the air at two of three intake shafts altered under- ground air flow changes sufficient to be considered a violation of Part 75.322 of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 as amended by Public Law 95.164. The primary concern was to accurately define the problem in order to derive a workable solution.

Ring tension tests have been conducted on 229 mm (9 in) diameter disks of Grande basaltic andesite and Pomona basalt with various center hole sizes in order to study the relationship between ring tensile strength and relative hole radius (hole radius/disk radius). The tensile strength, [ ] decreases as the relative hole radius, [ ] increases. A power equation, [ ] where C and R represent the coefficients of strength and shape, respectively, adequately represents the ring tensile strength as a function of relative hole radius over the range investigated. This equation can be used to distinguish the effect of the hole size from the strength results, to predict the tensile strength of a ring sample containing arbitrary hole sizes, and to approximate the critical relative hole radius of the material tested.

There are many different machine design parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of speeds. mining operations will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates that result in non optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency with two operating modes. Overall, the results match the theory, and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, when operated at full capacity, with an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. Using a fixed feed rate, the crushers had 4-14% higher production when operating at the optimal speed. Secondary analysis showed that the power draw consistency and magnitude of power spikes could also be improved by optimizing the cone speed. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive, more energy efficient, impove process control and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine

The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. The Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of their processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step towards this goal is the application of a Digital Twin concept to provide Virtual Instruments. Haile has engaged ANDRITZ to implement Virtual Instruments at their grinding area hydrocyclones and at their tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The Digital Twin is a first principles IDEAS1 ™ simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions, and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters. INTRODUCTION OceanaGold’s Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. This location was first mined in 1827, and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October, 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile Operation. The current operation began in 2017 as an open pit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 6,350 tpd ore, and 2017 production was 118k oz gold, with 140 to 155k oz gold expected in 2018. Proven and Probable reserves exceed 3 Moz. The process, as shown in Figure 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a Semi-Autonomous Grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon in leach (CIL) leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile Operation’s inaugural gold pour took place January 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through at least the year 2030. Based partially on prior experience of some key OceanaGold personnel with automation services from ANDRITZ on other projects, OceanaGold decided to include ANDRITZ on the Haile project. The scope of these services for Haile included design and supply of the process control application software, an ANDRITZ dynamic process simulator for operator training, and ANDRITZ Advanced Control Expert (ACE) ®2 systems for the SAG mill, ball mill, and rougher flotation areas. Since startup, ANDRITZ has continued to provide services for the site, particularly related to PLC and HMI equipment, programming and support, ACE system expansion, and the implementation of Virtual Instrumentation. The implementation of this new Virtual Instrumentation technology at Haile is consistent with Haile goals: increased automation, a change in the role of the operator from interactor to monitor, and improved stability by removing human error.

This study provides an effective determination process of the interface microstructural parameters in the numerical modeling of the mechanical interaction between two different geomaterials involved with frictional-bonded interfaces, such as the interaction between backfill columns and the surrounding rocks, or the soil-structure interaction, by using the coupled finite-difference and discrete-element (FD-DE) method. The test results validated the feasibility and rationality of the coupled FD-DE method for modeling the combined specimens with frictional-bonded interfaces or joints. Furthermore, this study provides valuable numerical modeling experience for investigating the shear behavior at the interface between cemented backfill columns and surrounding walls by using the coupled FD-DE method.

INTRODUCTION The art of placer gold mine evaluation and mining has had an interesting evolution beginning in earliest times. DE RE METALLICA (c.1556), documents the use of rockers, circular sieves(jigs) and riff lest for classifying, concentrating and recovering placer gold, respectively. During the late 1800's in the heat of the international gold rush, a bucket ladder mining dredge containing its own processing plant was developed that enabled digging of placers to bedrock that were inaccessible to the hand miner. The power driven churn drill was developed at about the same tie that facilitated more rapid and larger scale sampling of placers to bedrock. The mineral jig was applied in the early part of the 1900,s to begin the replacement of riffles on placer dredges. Mining dredges proliferated in California and New Zealand to mine the deeper placers and spread throughout the world. The companies that were leaders in dredge mining technology conducted experimental work that advanced the state of the art by processing of gravels with jigs and amalgam systems to recover gold on board dredges in a continuous process. This paper will synthesize the technology of placer gold exploration, mine development and operation into guidelines for evaluation and development of small-scale prospects. Prospect Reconnaissance The location of a prospect usual1 y results from some physical evidence of the presence of gold and/or past mining activity. Any earlier activity that may have produced gold from the prospect, should be investigated before making the trip. The initial reconnaissance should attempt to verify a near-surface presence and then make observations concerning the geomorphic characteristics that relate to placer gold accumulation. Estimates of the probable depth, breadth and length of mineable gravels can be made from the surf ace by the experienced placer mining engineer. With this information, he can speculate on whether there is a viable prospect to be pursued. The placer mining engineer should be experienced in panning samples found in shallow diggings or from existing pits. This will give him immediate indications of gold presence without fear of "salting" by an over-ambitious promoter of the project. The same capability of panning is important during the other sampling phases. A thorough knowledge of logging and calculating the results is essential to proper evaluation of the deposit' s tenor. Evaluation Methods Depending upon the character of the prospect such as river, benches, terraces, jungle, the type of equipment to conduct sampling of the deposit must be determined. In most cases, the drill has replaced bulk sampling. The churn drill has had the greatest amount of accumulated experience but is slow. The reverse circulation drill (RC), is limited by its lack of verification in subsequent mining in order to prove its reliability. However, in the hands of knowledgeable placer mining engineers experienced with its use and calibration, it may be used. The RC Hammer drill (such as the Becker), can be as much as ten times faster than the churn drill and compress the time necessary to prove a prospect, or, to disprove it. All costs in balance, it is often cost effective over the churn drill.

he selection of mill design parameters to suit the applica­tion requirements can result in quite different operating parame­ters for each generic type of application, even though the basic mechanical layout of the mills may remain similar. The selection of the type and size of grinding media is very important to efficient and cost-effective operation, and to ensuring that the milled product achieves the required properties. Accordingly, the grinding media selection is seen as an integral part of the mill design. Consideration of the requirement for classification is important in order to achieve the optimum mill and circuit performance. This can lead to the circuit feed not being classified for a steady feed with minimal slimes and a low size reduction ratio. Feed containing on-size particles would be deslimed by open circuit classification. Closed circuit classification is performed where the feed fluctuates. The rheological characteris­tics of the circuit feed slurry can have an influence on mill performance, and needs to be allowed for. A common misconception frequently encountered is the belief that "a mill is just a mill". This is not the case with stirred types of mills, since the operating parameters selected for the mill can have a large effect on the product characteristics. For example, horizontal shaft high speed stirred mills have a com­pletely different grinding action to vertical shaft low to medium speed stirred mills, which results in large differences between the surface area produced at a given product size (Liddell, 1986). Hence, it can be misleading to apply test results or design procedures obtained from one type of mill to other types for scale-up. The Metprotech stirred mill, as applied in the mining and minerals industries, is a low to medium speed vertical shaft mill. The basic design has been discussed previously (Liddell, 1989). Currently, the largest mills that have been manufactured have an installed power of 400 kW. The largest chamber volume at this power is 6000 litres, containing IO t of grinding media. It is intended that the installed power will increase up to lMW as applications requiring larger sizes arise.

Froth flotation has been used to improve the recovery of fine coal, for minimizing the sulfur and ash content of clean coal and for the removal of fine coal from recycled or discharged backwater from coal preparation plants. Though froth flotation and allied processes for ores date from the turn of the century, with the first U.S. commercial application in 1911, coal flotation has been introduced into U.S. practice much more slowly. The first European coal flotation plant was started in 1920, and by 1933 Europe had 60 operating plants while the United States had only one plant, newly commissioned. Over the years there has been a steady increase in coal flotation so that today one-third of the 345 U.S. plants employ the process. This report traces U.S. coal flotation practice and technological improvements from early laboratory experiments in 1915 up to today's extensive use of the process.

The art of predicting rock excavating machine performance has become increasingly detailed and refined. Researchers using laboratory experiments and machine manufacturers using field observations have identified and defined mechanisms of failure, rock and tool interaction, and relevant design principles affecting them. Concurrently, practitioners have developed index tests which reflect rock properties relevant to machine performance. Empirical relationships between index properties and machine performance (penetration rate, cutter consumption, and machine utilization) have been established from past experience and are currently used throughout the industry. Contractors have used such relationships for estimating throughout the world. The detail in which geological, geotechnical, test, and project data, empirical relationships, and construction experience are utilized, is limited by time constraints imposed by the bidding period. To fully utilize all available data, methods of analysis, and construction experience, a simple computer program was developed for a microcomputer costing less than $7500. As a result, 1. machine performance predictions are detailed & reliable, 2. construction alternatives may be examined, 3. anticipated conditions & performance are graphically, documented & easily comparable to those encountered, and 4. results include a listing of assumptions & results of performance analyses & a graphic performance summary.

Past research showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture. Rock dust must disperse with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion. Non-treated rock dust readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while anti-caking treated rock dusts can remain dry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health contracted the Central Mining Institute in Poland to conduct large-scale testing in their Experimental Mine Barbara to determine if a treated rock dust can be as effective as non-treated rock dust in attenuating or quenching coal dust explosions under the same experimental conditions. INTRODUCTION One of the goals of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to conduct research to reduce the risk of mine disasters and provide workplace solutions to reduce the risks associated with accumulations of combustible and explosible materials; the most common form of which is the generation of coal dust during the mining process and its subsequent distribution downwind. Dispersible rock dust is a primary defense for preventing coal dust explosion propagation in underground coal mines, and its properties are defined in 30 CFR 75.2. “Pulverized limestone, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, shale, adobe, or other inert material, preferably light colored, 100 percent of which will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 70 percent or more of which will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the particles of which when wetted and dried will not cohere to form a cake which will not be dispersed into separate particles by a light blast of air; and which does not contain more than 5 percent combustible matter or more than a total of 4 percent free and combined silica (SiO2), or, where the Secretary finds that such silica concentrations are not available, which does not contain more than 5 percent of free and combined silica.” An earlier NIOSH investigation of rock dust revealed two significant concerns with the supply of rock dust to U.S. coal mines: 1) insufficient particles <200 mesh (75 μm) and 2) all rock dusts when wetted and dried formed cakes and were not easily dispersed with a light blast of air (1). Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture (2). Rock dust must also be dispersible in concert with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion (3, 4, 5, 6). Non-treated rock dust, however, readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while a rock dust treated with long-chain fatty acids (such as stearic acid) can remain dry and dispersible. Stearin-treated rock dust has been used in British coal mines (7) and is commonly used in Polish coal mines.

This paper presents a multi-level computer monitoring and managing system, which was specially developed for the mine. In this system, TF-200, Industrial Standard Buses (STD) and 32 bytes Super micro-computer were integrated into one body as hardware; Data Base was designed by means of software engineering method in the software development; on maitenance of the system, the parameters are managed concentratedly and data are classified to process; therefore, the ystem gets to the advanced level in China. The system is composed of four sub-stations: Signal Transmission. Data Collection, Data Processing and Image Display Sub-system. Signal Transmission Sub-system(STSS) A frequency-division transmission method is used. Data Collect ion Sub-system (DCSS) Industrial Standard Buses (STD) is used. It can change data from STSS into suitable form for DCSS, Calculate average value every minute, decide alarm and transmit data to DPSS. Data Processing Sub-system (DPSS) The host is a S/120. With UNIX Operation System. the data from DCSS can be classified. stored, displayed. printed, by means of real-time and time-division processing. Additionally the functions of the historic data search and data analysis are provide. Image Display Sub-system (IDSS) The real-time and historic data was displayed for curves and diageams on screens. This system has been in operation.

Addwest Minerals&apos; turnaround of the Gold Road Mine in 1996 proves the old adage "mines are made, not found." The underground mine, located in Arizona&apos;s San Francisco mining district, was reopened in 1995. Start-up proved difficult because the initial mining method created significant ore grade dilution. Since 1977, Amax Coal Co.&apos;s Belle Ayr mine near Gillette, WY, has been the largest producing coal mine in the US. In its 10 years of operation more than 90 Mt (100 million st) of coal have been shipped from the mine&apos;s facilities to electric generating plants across the country. It is thought to be the largest amount ever produced in US history from a single coal mine. The railroad is Belle Ayr&apos;s lifeline for moving this massive volume from a relatively isolated corner of northeastern Wyoming. There are no waterways for barge traffic, and highway truck hauling would be impractical considering the quantity and distance of coal to be moved. Transportation in the Powder River Basin-at least for the present-is strictly unit trains. An average of four unit trains daily load at Belle Ayr. These trains average 108 cars long, with a capacity of 91 t (100 st) per car. Burlington Northern Railroad serves the Powder River Basin, but locomotives supplied by Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, and Kansas City Southern are a common site as well, since coal will often travel these lines too on its way to utility plants in Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Oregon. When Belle Ayr opened transportation in the Powder River Basin was in an early development stage. As the first large-scale coal shipper in the area, Belle Ayr was the only user of a 27-km (17-mile) railroad spur south of Gillette. Other mines, however, were to open soon on the abundant, low-sulfur reserves. Today, less than a decade after Belle Ayr&apos;s debut, 13 large-capacity mines operate near Gillette. The 27-km (17-mile) spur that once served only Belle Ayr has been extended 177 km (110 miles) south to service other mines as well, and to tie into a major rail line in central Wyoming. The Powder River Basin is now served by a wishbone-shaped track configuration that allows train movement north into Montana, south into Colorado, and east into Nebraska for connections across the country. Operations at Belle Ayr are closely tied to train arrivals and departures, with coordination essential between mine operations and rail personnel. "Train movement in the Powder River Basin has evolved to the point where we are fine-tuning mining operations to coordinate them with a more dependable transportation system," according to Joe Jefferson, transportation supervisor with Amax Coal&apos;s western division.
