The results of the electrokinetic study of the activation of quartz by divalent cations showed that the charge reversal was related to the point at which the cation hydrolyzed. The reversal was not due to the presence of solid hydroxide at the surface of the quartz but due to the charged ions in the solutions. The charge reversal for beryllium at a log molar concentration of 1x10-4 was observed at pH 5 and 9. The quartz was positively charged between a pH reading of 5 to 10. Magnesium at the same log molar concentration did not show a charge reversal from pH 2 to 12. The probable cause of the charge reversal was due to the ionized Be3 (OH)3+3 or Mg (OH)+ . Variations in the electrokinetics of quartz were minimized by heating the sample to 300° C.

The US Bureau of Mines compared column flotation using either fine or coarse bubbles with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a &.7% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrate with 87% recovery, compared with 43.8% and 43.5% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrates with 85% and 77% recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse- and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5% Cr2O3 with 95% recovery, exceeding conventional flotation, which produced 35.6% Cr2O3 -grade concentrates with 87% recovery.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful analytical and data display tools for mining industry management, capable of linking spatial features with tabular data and integrating communications across departmental boundaries. This GIS application concentrates in four technical areas of underground mining: ownership and mineral claims; exploration management; production; and mine safety. GIS provides land and exploration managers with the ability to consolidate and archive claim data and to georeference property maps defined in local coordinates into world coordinate systems. It facilitates optimal siting and querying of service installations and refuge chambers relative to production centers. GIS's proximity analysis identifies areas of potential safety concern and points to and maps the shortest routes to emergency exits, facilitating the prompt evacuation of mine personnel.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with an American firm, has been contributing toward the creation of a new highwall mining system for extracting coal in active, unreclaimed contour strip mines in the United States. The prototype system features the computer-based, remote control, video operation of a thin-seam continuous miner. Haulage is accomplished remotely also with a 76-m (250-ft) long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveyor system on rubber-tire vehicles. One aspect of this multi-faceted effort has been to design a ventilation system for removing dust generated at the face during the extraction process. The remote mining system eliminates the need for personnel in the mined workings. Ventilation is required to remove visible dust from the area inby two video cameras. These cameras are located approximately 6 m (20 ft) from the face, one on either side of a modified Jeffrey 102HP continuous miner. Removing the dust from this area provides the remote operator with constant visual monitoring of coal extraction at the face and thus, insures the effective operation of the mining system. A ventilation system was designed for use in a mine opening with a maximum cross-sectional area of roughly 4 sq m (44 sq ft) excluding the mining machinery. This paper describes the ventilation system and discusses how it was developed in view of the constraints imposed by the mining equipment, mining conditions, and the extraction process.

The following processes were investigated using ultrasonic treatment in mineral recovery: (1) cleaning coal from coal slurry ponds, and (2) extracting precious metals from tailings and other sources. The treatment entails the production of a water slurry of the material containing the mineral which is made to flow over the vibrating surface of the ultrasonic treatment unit. The vibrations transmitted into the slurry break up particle agglomerates and also produce a scrubbing action on the surfaces of the particles. The treated mineral particles were found to have increased settling rates, better compaction, and more rapid water drainage.

The advanced cryogenic treatment is a post-manufacturing metallurgical process that involves subjecting off-theshelf materials to extremely low temperatures, significantly improving wear resistance and reliability. These case studies explore whether the claims of Enrich Bits & Tools benefit metals and their specific in-field application to drill bits in the blasting industry. This paper reviews the application of the treatment to button drill bits for enhanced wear resistance in two operations. The first is a civil construction project with highly abrasive rock. To confirm the remarkable benefits of the treatment, a second case study was performed. This case study utilized measure-while-drilling technology in consistent rock characteristics to reduce variables in the field study.

Feeders are used to provide a means of control for the withdrawal of bulk materials from storage units, such as bins, bunkers, silos and hoppers. This control function can only be performed properly as long as the bulk materials flow by gravity to the feeder in a uniform and uninterrupted fashion. A feeder can do many things, but it should never be considered a suction pump: During the past few years various papers have been written and presented on feeders and their application. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)* It is not the intent of this paper to cover the same ground, and the readers are therefore ad¬vised to consult the referenced publications for supplementary information. This paper will be confined to some specific design criteria of bin feeders, such as feeder load and power requirements. Special attention is given to the basic design criteria of vibratory feeders.

Most coal mine roofs in the Appalachian region consist of laminated shale, which is prone to brittle failure. Accurate modeling of shale roofs is vital for studying cutter failures of these shale roofs, and ordinary and formational bedding planes play a significant role in the response off the shale roof to mining-induced stresses. This paper presents a robust method for constructing three-dimensional shale roof models using limited borehole cores and leveraging image processing techniques. The approach begins with image extraction from shale cores. Then, we extract the portions that feature the core and employ image-stitching techniques to merge them seamlessly. Once the images are stitched, they are duplicated horizontally and merged to create a cross-sectional plane image representing a shale roof. This roof cross-sectional plane image serves as an input to our proprietary Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithm, which is adept at extracting ordinary bedding planes (interfaces that represent color transitions between a single shale unit). The extraction process involves transforming discrete core points (ordinary bedding plane pixels) into continuous lines representing ordinary bedding planes. Finally, extending this method into the third dimension, the model is further extrapolated to form a comprehensive three-dimensional shale roof. Through this process, the geometry information of ordinary bedding planes can be extracted for each type of shale in cores, including sandy shale, gray shale, dark shale, etc. This work bridges the gap between limited core data and comprehensive 3D geological modeling, offering valuable insights into identifying and quantifying the variations in different shale roof geologies.

As we move towards the 21st Century there are several factors that will influence the markets and processing requirements for industrial minerals. Traditional markets for many industrial minerals in the developed world are frequently stagnant or decreasing because of their maturity or due to environmental factors such as reclamation, recovery of byproducts, and recycling. Some industrial minerals are greatly affected by these factors, while others are either immune to or have adapted successfully to meet these challenges. In the developing countries of the world, there is rapid market growth and resource exploitation. The future of specific mineral commodities in several markets will be discussed.

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.

The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents.

Over the past 12 years, Exxon Coal U.S.A., Inc. has shipped over 150 million tons of coal from two mines, Rawhide and Caballo, located in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. These mines are operated by The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal. Shipments have moved to more than 25 electric utility plants in the west, midwest, southwest, and south. The customer plants have represented a wide variety of configurations, sizes. design criteria, emission standards, and operations in different parts of the country. We have learned a great deal about the performance of Gillette area coals in utility power plants during this period. This paper covers some of the highlights of Exxon's experience with these coals in customer plants. I will focus specifically on things mining engineers may be able to do to make the product better for the customer's use.

Hydrologic impacts of longwall mining were studied in 1986 after mining had occurred at mine "Z" in northern West Virginia. This mine is 700 to 1,300 ft deep, with a surface topographic relief of 300 to 500 ft. Five springs and one dug well were reportedly dewatered by mining. All such supplies are above nearby streams in elevation, and at least 800 ft above the subsided mine. Three of these six supplies showed partial recovery within one year. Only supplies within 50 ft in elevation of a nearby stream showed apparent partial recovery. Measured perennial streams showed notable depletion in streamflow over mined longwall panels that were less than two years old. Normal stream discharge was measured over panels more than two years old. Most apparent hydrologic dewatering impacts appear to be temporary, and the most vulnerable areas for these impacts are hill sides.

Pebble phosphate deposits of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line or a distance of over 200 miles and mining has been carried out in an ever-increasing scale since 1885. Deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, however, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of the Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate occurs usually as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 inch down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well- defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white or "salt and pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations and the recoverable phosphate varies may extend down to the 400 mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.

Bond International Gold's Colosseum gold mine was discovered in 1865. No recorded production occurred, however, until the 1930s, with production of about 19 kg (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a nonessential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid-1986. Construction of a 1.1-million Mt (1.2-million st), carbon-in-pulp (CIP), cyanide mill began in November 1986 and was completed in September 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9.5 Mt (10.5 million st), with an average grade of 2.1 g/t (0.061 oz per st). This article describes the general process flow and plant equipment. And it looks at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the first six months of operation. Process description Ore is direct hauled from the open-pit mine 1.5 km (1 mile) to the crushing facility. There it is crushed to -152 mm (-6 in.) with a single- stage, 1.5-m x 1.2-m (60-in. x 48-in.), 186.5-kW (250-hp), Fuller-Traylor jaw crusher. The ore is then stockpiled in a 31.7-kt (35,000-st) reclaim ore pile. Lime is added to the crushed product as it is conveyed to a single 6.4-m x 4-m (21-ft x 13-ft), Hardinge semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill, followed by a single 4.3-m x 7.3-m (14-ft x 24-ft) Hardinge overflow ball mill. After grinding, the slurry is thickened and then preaereated for three hours. Following preaereation, the pulp is leached with NaCN at a pH of 11, also for three hours. The slurry then goes through a seven-stage CIP circuit for 21 hours. Then the tailings slurry is preaereated for three hours before cyanide destruction using the Inco process. Loaded carbon is eluted using an Anglo American strip, followed by electrowinning on stainless steel wire. The stainless steel wire is transferred to refinery cells where the gold and silver is plated on stainless steel plates. Following electrore-fining, the gold-silver foil is removed, melted, and poured into dore bars for shipment. The crushing, milling, refining, and maintenance processes require 37 people. Crushing The crushing area required changes and modifications following start-up. Several areas are of specific note. Structural failures Rubber support cushion blocks located under the coarse ore bin failed. These were replaced with heavier, more durable blocks and have since appeared to be satisfactory. A severe structural vibration was encountered in the entire crushing facility. A mechanical engineer, brought in by the contractor, determined the structure needed more support and cross-bracing.

INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. The existing Hetch Hetchy water system, owned and operated by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), serves 2.4 million people within the San Francisco Bay Area. The system has existing 1920s-era pipelines crossing under the Bay that are vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The SFPUC plans to replace the pipelines with the first TBM-driven tunnel underneath the San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance machine. The new tunnel will pass under environmentally sensitive habitats and will be approximately eight kilometers (five miles) long with no intermediate shafts. The project challenges will include tunneling through a prominent buried bedrock ridge that transects the alignment and through soft soils under the Bay. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake on one of the active faults in close proximity to the project site.
