The zeolites review arrived too late for the June issue. The natural zeolite industry continues to grow even as some companies look for the exits. Production for 1993 was estimated at between 42 and 44 kt (46,000 and 48,000 st). That is between 7 and 9 kt (7700 and 9900 st) above 1992 production. GSA Resources, Saint Cloud Mining, Steelhead Specialty Minerals, Teague Minerals, UOP and Zeotech all reported continued growth last year. At the same time the East-West Minerals' Eastgate mordenite mine, and American Resources' Ash Meadows clinoptilolite operations both shut down their processing plants and are attempting to sell the mines and facilities. In addition, Tenneco Minerals continued its attempt to sell the Mud Hills clinoptilolite deposit. Unimin entered the natural zeolite industry through its acquisition of several properties of Aimcor. Paraphrasing the poetic repetition of Gertrude Stein - "Research is research, is research, is research --- ad infinitum." But research takes many forms and involves many facets. Perhaps the most simple of definitions is that attributed to the late "Boss" Kettering of General Motors who in advising a young trainee said, "Research is an intelligent effort to satisfy the curiosity of the human mind." Reclamation research is complex and requires a diversity of scientific knowledge. The overall aim of land reclamation research is directed to finding practical ways to develop efficient methods to restore mined lands to productive use, compatible with use of adjacent lands, as soon after mining as possible; and, finding practical ways to reduce or prevent damage to surrounding resource areas, which may be affected by the mining process. Research in the field of mined land reclamation is not entirely new, although in some respects we are exploring new areas each day.

In recent gears in the coal industry a great deal of attention is attached to the questions of elaborating and introducing the problems of planning and management and, first of all, in the sphere of mine production. The basis for planning of mi- ne production is complexes (sets) of problems for planning the development of mining operations based on different time periods, ensuring the follow-up of changes of mine productive capacities. Complexes of problems for planning, the development of mining operations at existing underground and surface mines within the OASUugol system (Coal Industry-wide Automatic System of Management) are aimed at ma- king decisions close to optimum, i.e. general lay-out of panels, blocks and pillars; transport and ventilation networks; schedules for working out parts of mine take; coordinated mining operations with limited labour and material resources; control of mining operations and ultimately maintaining productive capacities of existing mines at the required level.

Baseline quantities of difficult ground and support types were estimated for the Chattahoochee Tunnel using the Rock Mass Rating system. RMR classifies the ground into five categories, ranging from “very good” to “very poor,” based on five main parameters: intact rock strength, RQD, joint spacing, joint condition, and groundwater inflow. For the Chattahoochee Tunnel, these parameters were independently measured in the cores and shown graphically on the boring logs. A 55 matrix was calculated to obtain the statistical distribution of RMR for the project. Three baseline ground types were defined based on the RMR. Geologic mapping inside the tunnel during construction has verified the accuracy of this method.

Productivity improvements reduced the number of continuous miner sections from seven to three while maintaining full productive capacity. So a decision was made to test an advancing tailgate ventilation system on the shortwall mining section. Having the shortwall mine its own return air system has freed the third mining section for more productive, less costly mining. The advancing tailgate has provided effective ventilation across the face and gob with acceptable pressure losses. The low-productivity, tailgate-development, continuous-miner section has been transformed into to a high-productivity, development-retreat section that is also available for long-term mine development duties, increasing mine planning flexibility.

The response of 174 domestic water supplies to longwall mining of the Pittsburgh coal seam was compared to various physical parameters. Sixty-four percent of domestic water supplies returned to service without the need for intervention, while thirty six percent required intervention to reestablish a suitable water supply. Domestic well response is strongly correlated with the topographic setting. Valley wells showed the least effect while hilltop wells showed the greatest effect. Well response was also found to be correlated to the location of the well above the mining with greater effects observed in zones of surface tension and compression, and fewer effects in zones which are stress neutral. Ground water supplies remained unaffected or were re¬established at 149 of 150 sites, indicating that ground water resources remain available to domestic wells after mining. Results of this study support the stress-relief model of ground water flow in the Northern Appalachian Basin. Longwall mining's effect on this system is to locally increase fracture connectivity in the near surface zone. This may shift the zones of saturated fractures to greater depths beneath hilltops and hillsides, and increase recharge and storage in valleys. General trends in well response are predict¬able utilizing the stress relief conceptual model, the topographic setting of the water sources, and their location over the mine.

Modified after procedures for assessing acid-generating potential of coal spoils, most acid-base-accounting (ABA) analyses inadequately characterize highly varied metal deposits. Although mineralogy critically controls acid generation and metal leaching, acquisition of appropriate data and their interpretation are poorly developed. Metal loading rates are commonly determined by kinetic testing, which rarely duplicate actual field samples and conditions. Accurate predictions and reduced assessment costs can conceivably be achieved by (i) use of geochemical analyses to define surrogate indicators; (ii) intelligent acquisition and use of mineralogical data; and, (iii) compilation of geo-environmental ore-deposit models to validate inference based on detailed geology.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research at its Reno Research Center to develop a staged agglomeration-heap leaching system and to electrowin the dissolved precious metals from the pregnant leaching solution. For direct electro- winning to be successful, the pregnant solutions generated during the Initial stages of leaching must be higher grade than obtained by conventional heap leaching. The precious metal concentration of the pregnant solution can be Increased by agglomeration pretreatment with cyanide solution which starts the leaching process during the curing period, by leaching with small volumes of solution and by cycling the leaching solution through more than one heap in a staged manner. The resulting pregnant solution is passed directly through an electrowinning circuit. The barren solution from electrowinning is recycled to the leaching circuit. Bench-scale research on the development of the staged leaching system and on the development of an efficient electrowinning cell are described. The Bureau of Mines developed agglomeration- heap leaching technology. This technology was readily adopted by the mining Industry for heap leaching crushed ores and mine wastes. Current research involves the application of this technology to finely ground feed materials such as precious metal-bearing milled tailings. Tailings agglomeration-heap leaching has also been used commercially.

Full-scale stopping and simulated over- cast structures were constructed in large opening (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) room and pillar excavations in an oil shale mine. The program was undertaken to develop construction techniques and to generate data on structure costs and leakage rates. Leakage rates were measured using both sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas and "brattice window" methods at varying differential pressures. The measurements were conducted before and after a full-scale face blast to characterize the effects of blasting on leakage, and blast air pressures were measured across the stoppings. The operating performance of different combinations of permanent and temporary stoppings was evaluated by developing an operating model for a two-panel oil shale mine. The operating performance for the different stopping combinations was then compared to the system cost to evaluate the overall performance.

INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts. The effect of particle size and composition on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized bituminous coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been investigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm (about 140 mesh). This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate before ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of an HVA bituminous coal that were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite-rich samples.

Selected voltammograms in tetraborate buffer solutions in the presence of ethyl xanthate or isopropyl xanthate at pH 9.3, for chalcocite, covellite, chalcopyrite, and enargite mineral electrodes, are presented. The concept of critical Eh of dixanthogen condensation (Ehc) is introduced, and the line of Ehc is thermodynamically defined in plots of log [X i] vs Eh, for methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl xanthates. A reaction scheme of xanthate oxidation in four steps, involving the dixanthogen condensation step, is proposed. A first attempt to interpret mineral flotation from a more general point of view is made. The electrochemical mechanism of dixanthogen formation and condensation is considered as a particular case of a more general and relevant phenomenon, which is the decomposition of the collector giving hydrophobic colloidal forms, whose associative behavior in bulk solution and at the mineral/solution interface is governed by colloid chemistry.

The important characteristics of a gas-promoted oil agglomeration process for cleaning coal particles in an aqueous suspension were determined. Numerous agglomeration tests with scale-model mixing systems of different sizes with controlled amounts of air were conducted. The tests were conducted on high- and mediumvolatile bituminous coals using either i-octane or hexadecane as an oily agglomerant. The performance of the system was characterized by employing the minimum time required to produce spherical agglomerates (tE), the mean agglomerate diameter (dp), coal recovery and product ash content. Among these parameters, tE was found the most useful. It is a key parameter in the scale-up of an agglomeration mixing system. This parameter was found to depend on a number of system and operating variables. By controlling these variables and conducting further agglomeration tests with mixing systems that varied in size, an appropriate size scale-up rule was established.

Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to--float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in processing porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome them. Though some of the problems are interrelated, they are classified into three broad categories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment, and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

Flocculant testing should be initiated for economic or performance reasons. When the decision has been made to test, the laboratory can provide valuable information concerning the various products under consideration. Properly conducted laboratory tests can determine: 1. If two flocculants are needed to achieve clarity or density. 2. Ease of mixing. 3. How quickly the material goes into solution. 4. Stability of prepared f locculant solution. 5. Stability of the floc formed. 6. Amount of mixing required for proper floe formation. 7. Optimum flocculant concentration. 8. Optimum pulp density. 9. Approximate location of the point of addition. 10. Single or multiple addition points. When a flocculant shows promise in the laboratory, a plant test should be scheduled. During the plant trial, arrange for normal conditions and start testing with a crew that is most familiar with the unit operation where the flocculant will be applied.

Entry stability in coal mines is dependent on geologic conditions and engineering controls. Most engineering controls in ground control are predictable and standardized for typical geologic conditions. However, geologic anomalies may exist that are difficult to detect with traditional core hole drilling. Borescopes offer a cost-efficient way to gather more geologic data between core holes. Additional data obtained from borescope results provide a clearer picture to enhance detection of hazardous conditions due to geologic anomalies. The equipment, methods, and analysis of borescope results provide geomechanical engineers with a clear understanding of strata behavior and the best information to implement roof control plans and supplemental support to enhance miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Borescope technology has changed very little since its inception. However, the idea to use borescopes to examine roof strata started with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1979 with the production of a fiber-optic borescope (FitzSimmons, et al., 1979). The first documented use of a borescope in the coal mining industry began during the 1980s in Australia by researcher John Shepherd. Shepherd’s idea was to use a borescope to collect a series of data points from the roof lithology and compose a geologic cross section. The cross section was then used to identify key features that suggested the beginnings of roof failure. The features Shepherd identified were bedding plane separations in the roof and low angle, extension, and tensile failures. Shepherd also suggested that the borescope findings could be used for geologic mapping for lithological variation, fracture distribution, and determining if supplemental roof support was needed (Shepherd, et al., 1986). In the United States the first publication about borescope usage for coal mine stability assessment was by Su and associates in 1999, who specifically related the combination of using borescope, geophysical, and corehole data to produce geologic hazard maps (Su et al., 1999). This work directly linked the usage of a borescope with the design of supplemental roof support. The use of borescopes in mining was adopted industry wide by the 2000s. Operator case studies were being published using borescopes to aid in supplemental support recommendations and hazard mapping. An Australian study published in 2007 based the optimization of secondary support after each longwall pass on the results of borescope data. The study stated that the borescope was an invaluable tool for understanding roof behavior (Black, et al., 2007). In 2009, a publication by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) took the concept of borescoping one step further. The work centered around creating a roof quality index (RQI) for limestone mines based on borescope data. The RQI attempted to assign a ranking to establish the nature of the roof and its stability (Ellenberger 2009). In theory, this would have been a very useful tool, but the RQI system has not been widely adopted in the industry.

A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

This paper reviews commercial installations of FLOTAIRE Column Flotation Machines for metallic, nonmetallic, and coal flotation. Second generation FLOTAIRE Column Flotation Machines employ dual aeration systems to provide a mixture of air bubble sizes. Operating data presented in this paper shows that optimum grade and recovery relationship for each rougher, cleaner, and scavenger application are obtained by adjusting the ratio and volume of aspirator air bubbles and micro diffuser air bubbles.

Conveyor pulleys are an important and integral component of a conveyor. Conveyors work in sequence to make up conveyor systems. Each conveyor system is only as reliable as its crudest component. If the pulley fails, then the whole material handling system stops. So what is the effect of this downtime? What are the costs of repair? How much are we willing to pay to solve the problem? What should we spend to prevent an unscheduled shutdown? Do we use the technological improvements at our disposal or do we ignore them to satisfy immediate cost savings? This study will focus on the cost of pulleys relative to the total conveyor cost, the cost of downtime, the maintenance costs and the costs for resolution of the problem. Some philosophic and design concepts are injected for illustration and discussion.
